Spring Testing Schedule When we return from vacation, we will engage all students in taking the state mandated Smarter Balanced Assessment. This will assess students’ achievement and growth in the areas of mathematics and literacy. In addition, grade 8 students will take the Next Generation Science Standards Assessment, in it’s first year of full implementation. These assessments account for 10 of the 20 indicators the state of CT uses to generate our school and district’s performance through the Next Generation Accountability Report. These assessments matter. Please note the schedule below and do your best to have your child in school, on time, rested, and ready! Testing will all be done in the morning. Please schedule appointments around this schedule as much as you can to avoid the need for make-up sessions. Please encourage your child to do their best! Thank you!

In addition, students will also be taking the CT Fitness test throughout the month of May. These scores represent another indicator on our Accountability Report, and therefore we are counting on our students to take this assessment seriously. We know many more of our students can pass this test than have in the past! Please see the attached information in this newsletter from the PE/Health department on the fitness standards, and how you can help prepare your child with brief fitness activities over this vacation week!
P.E. & HEALTH DEPARTMENT NEWS The week we return from April break, students will be tested formally with their teacher in physical education class. To pass the CT Physical Fitness assessment, students must pass all 4 tests: MILE RUN (cardiovascular endurance test) ; 90 degree PUSH-UP test (muscular strength and endurance); Partial CURL-UP test (muscular endurance) and the SIT & REACH test (flexibility). All students will be tested. To reinforce the importance of this test, as well as personal fitness in relation to one’s health, fitness scores will be included as an assessment on PowerSchool during Trimester 3 P.E. This one grade is an objective score, and correlates directly with each student’s competency and abilities. Grading sheets are available on P.E. and Health teacher pages! Take a look, and encourage your child to give 100%! 8th grade wellness students created their own circuit training workout as a way to improve their strength, endurance and flexibility. The circuit can be done without any equipment, and takes about 5 minutes to complete one round. Try to complete a circuit with your child!
Ms. Montanaro’s Health Club: Students participating in Ms. Mont’s Health Club on Wednesdays set health and fitness goals for themselves. They spend time each Wednesday working to improve their personal fitness, as well as learning to make healthy snacks they could recreate at home.
APRIL BREAK FAMILY FITNESS CHALLENGE: Can your family complete the challenge? Give it a try! Each family member who completes the daily challenge should initial inside the box! Ask your middle schooler if he/she can show you the proper form for a 90 degree push-up! Sunday

On Tuesday, April 9, 2019, ten seventh grade French students and 27 seventh grade Spanish students were recognized for their hard work and achievement for maintaining an A- or above overall average in the study of French or Spanish at the second annual French Junior Honor Society induction and the first annual Spanish Junior Honor Society induction. The students did a tremendous job during the ceremony. There were easily close to 100 people in attendance, including Principal, Mr. Jim Sachs, BOE member, Ms. Jody Nazarchyk and Superintendent, Mr. Tom Giard. Many parents and other relatives were there to show their support of their students. It was a terrific night! Ms. Lynn Masciarelli and two of her orchestra students played during the ceremony. Madame Deojay, Señora Dearborn and Señor Giori would like to thank the students for their hard work and their parents for their support of the World Language program at CLMS. World Geography Classes Host Guest Speakers
Jewish Emissaries Roy, Sagi, and Liron with Ms. Corazzelli
7th grade world geography students recently experienced two presentations from guest speakers from Israel & Rwanda, a small country the size of MA in Central Africa. During the first week of April, students on the Osprey team had a return visit from Liron & Roy, Jewish Emissaries who are visiting southeastern CT for a year. They took students on a virtual tour of their country and updated students on all of their adventures in the United States. During the day there was a surprise visitor, Sagi. He is a former emissary who presented at CLMS 3 years ago. Roy & Liron will return to visit the Coral team during the month of May. Jackson Karama, a 2016 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, came to CLMS to give a memorable presentation to both teams. He was born in a refugee camp in Uganda and returned to his family’s home in Rwanda after the Genocide in 1994. Jackson shared stories of his childhood in Rwanda and answered student’s questions on a variety of topics. He is currently going to graduate school outside of London and working on his masters’ degree in mechanical engineering. He will return to Rwanda later this year to resume his leadership role in the Rwandan military. His presentation was very inspiring!

Play it Safe in the Sun April break will soon be here. If you are travelling to a warm, sunny destination – remember that too much sun can hurt. Did you know that just a few serious sunburns can increase your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life? Kids don’t have to be at the pool, beach, or on vacation to get too much sun. Their skin needs protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors.
Turning pink? Unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays in as little as 15 minutes. Yet it can take up to 12 hours for skin to show the full effect of sun exposure. So, if your child’s skin looks “a little pink” today – it may be burned tomorrow morning. To prevent further burning, get your child out of the sun. There’s no other way to say it: tanned skin is damaged skin. Any change in the color of your child’s skin after time outside-whether sunburn or suntan – indicates damage from UV rays.
Cool and cloudy? Children still need protection. UV rays, not the temperature do the damage. Clouds do not block UV rays, they filter them – and sometimes only slightly. Kids often get sunburned when they are outdoors – unprotected for longer than expected. Remember to plan ahead, and keep sun protection handy – in your car, bag or child’s backpack.
Choose your cover Hide and Seek. UV rays are strongest and most harmful during midday, so it’s best to plan indoor activities then. If not possible, seek shade. Cover ‘em up. Clothing that covers your child’s skin helps protect against UV rays. Get a hat. Hats that shade the face, scalp, ears and neck are easy to use and give great protection. Shades are cool. Sunglasses protect your child’s eyes from UV rays, which can lead to cataracts later in life. Rub on sunscreen. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and UVA/UVB protection every time your child goes outside.
Parents, help your children to play it safe, and protect your own skin as well. You’re an important role model. And remember, when you play it safe, you’re playing it smart.
