11AP English Language and Composition Summer Reading The first assignment is to read Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night carefully and closely. There will be a quiz on the play the second class meeting when we return to school, so you would also be wise to take detailed notes on the story in preparation for this quiz, although this is not required. The second assignment is to read one of the following ten books: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow, The Age of Innocence by Edith Warton, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sing by Maya Angelou, Moby Dick by Herman Melville, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, OR The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. You may email me if there is another American novel that you are interested in reading that you think is a solid, pivotal piece of literature. If you want to do this, you must email me before the end of July and I must email you back with approval; you will not receive any credit for the book, if you do not follow this step. You will be given an essay assignment based off this text on the first day of class.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at shartell@waterfordschools.org. I check this e-mail regularly during the summer. We will be working with these texts during the first month of school.
