EARN TICKETS FOR THE BACK 2 SCHOOL CARNIVAL! June 2019 Dear Parents, With the end of the school year quickly upon us, we know that you are making plans for your child’s summer vacation activities. Like most parents, you are aware that while the summer months are a welcome opportunity for fun and relaxation, the break from school activities often causes students to experience a lag in learning upon returning to school in the fall. In an effort to lessen this effect, Quaker Hill School is inviting students to participate in a Summer Reading & Math Space Odyssey! This program aims to help reduce the usual summer learning loss by providing incentives for students to read and problem solve over the summer. Students are asked to read as many “just right” books over the summer as they possibly can, then record their reading onto their Summer Reading Log. If you have younger children, please be aware that books you read with your children can be counted on their reading log. After reading a book, students can complete a Reading Quest. Please write the name of the quest completed (see example on log). In addition to reading, students are also asked to complete at least 20 math calendar activities per month. Math activities should also be recorded on their Summer Math log or color the activity on the math calendar. On the first day of school, students should return the Summer Reading log & Math log/calendar to their new teacher. Students will earn tickets to use at the Quaker Hill Carnival for each log they return. The top 5 readers in each grade will have their name entered in a drawing for a chance to throw a pie at Mr. D! Both reading and math logs can also be counted toward the CT Governor’s
Summer Reading Challenge and the CT Commissioner’s Summer Math Challenge.
You can support your child by encouraging completion of reading quests and math activities throughout the summer. Through this support, your child will learn that reading and math are not only important, but can be fun too! Sincerely, Mr. Discordia
