Campaign Updates INVEST IN OUR VISION

“The Science Center will bring this community closer. We get the chance to watch our campus evolve, to be a part of this new era for Waterford, and to really appreciate the change in the science program from great to even greater” — Lily M. Photo of Waterford Science Center Ground Breaking, April 8, 2022. Photo by Andrew Patteson. On April 8th we proudly celebrated the groundbreaking of our new, state-of-the-art Science Center and the launch of the public phase of Waterford Rises. It was a special occasion as we gathered the whole school and our community for a truly historic Waterford moment. In the run-up to the groundbreaking and celebration, several members of our community joined the campaign with truly

significant gifts. With this support, we enter the public phase having raised an incredible $25.5M of our $27M campaign target. We are so grateful to every family and individual for their investment in the vision for Waterford’s future, and we are now asking for everyone in the community to join this effort to help us reach and exceed our goal. Every dollar raised in the public phase helps us meet our vision of providing a world class liberal arts education for our current students and all who follow.

What’s Next

A Day in the Life of the New Science Center

SPRINGING AHEAD

BY JA M E S H A R R I S , S C I E N C E D E PA RT M E N T C H A I R

Working with the construction company and architects we completed the schematic designs for the Science Center and the Student Commons in early 2022, including complete floor plans and renderings of the building facades. As you can see from the images below, our design process prioritized spaces that Waterford’s faculty, staff, and students indicated were critical to teaching and learning.

At Waterford we believe passionately that the world needs scientists and that science-literate citizens are required of a worthy civilization. The new Science Center will continue to bring that vision to life, as we introduce a new generation of students to the wonders of science.

WIth the design process complete, construction is now underway on the site! SCIENCE CENTER

We are excited to report that work has commenced with the GPS survey and the first stages of excavation on the site. We are on schedule to open the Science Center in August, 2023. The final building will incorporate: • Science Commons - to serve as the entrance and connective backbone of the building • Makerspace - a space for multidisciplinary creation and experimentation • Classrooms - core learning spaces to teach the science fundamentals, including an advanced biology lab • Faculty room - a space for science faculty that’s accessible for students • Nature lab - a space to store, explore, and display natural specimens • Observation deck - viewing deck overlooking the new turf field and the Wasatch Mountains • Mud room - threshold space for use by the Outdoor Program

Current construction progress on the Waterford Science Center, May 2022. STUDENT COMMONS

Construction of the Student Commons is due to begin in late fall 2023 with the building scheduled to open in August, 2024. The final building will incorporate: • Reception - the welcoming ‘front door’ to our campus • Dining hall - the central gathering space of the Commons • Wellness area - space for student wellbeing support • Meeting spaces - bookable spaces for a range of student and staff activities • Hangout space - casual spaces for students to gather and socialize • Dean’s offices - an accessible location for the Deans in the Commons • Kitchen - central catering facility serving the dining hall

Imagine that the year is 2025. You are a fourth grader and Ms. Watabe announces that it is the day that your class will cross campus to visit the newly opened Science Center. You walk outside and join one of the secret trails in the Arboretum where you hop rock to rock. You don’t know, of course, that this magic landscape was established from barren ground in 1999, as part of Waterford’s last significant capital campaign, the Fine Arts Project. You just know it as your wild playground. The path now draws you towards an impressive new two-story building, which has similarly emerged from barren land, and over which you can see the high, snowy, peaks of mountains. As you near the doors, a glassy canyon pulls you and your friends in. Upon entering you catch sight of a grizzly bear, rearing on hind legs, behind which you see into an animal-filled room. There, around long tables covered with mammal skulls, is a group of middle school students gathered in our new Nature Lab.

As you follow Ms. Watabe to the central staircase, you see into the large open space of the new Makerspace with an array of fascinating tools: saws, 3D printers, laser cutter, automated milling machines. A group of Upper Schoolers are bent over in concentration, focused on the alluringly strange contraptions they are fabricating. Nearby is another group of students driving a frisbee-throwing robot, while at the other end of the room you see a man with a drone in his hand explaining it to a group of entranced students. At the top of the stairs you are passed by another teacher hurriedly on their way to the new Advanced Biology Lab where they are determining the genetic history of our pet dogs and cats. Finally you walk out onto an open air Observation deck, looking out to the Wasatch Mountains and the glacial boulders of the beautiful Little Cottonwood Canyon. You go to the edge where you watch as students are carefully lining up projectiles in their trebuchets, competing to be the most accurate at hitting the raven emblem at the center of the new turf athletic field. Visualizing this future through the eyes of our students has given us an unwavering belief in this project. We’re thankful to all who have trusted in our shared vision, and with your support we can’t wait to bring this vision to life.
