A LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL BY ANDREW MENKE

It is with great enthusiasm, and profound gratitude that I reflect on the 2017-18 school year. This year, we were once again inspired as so many members of the Waterford family stepped forward to support our compelling programs. In the spirit of growth and improvement that has characterized Waterford since our founding in 1981 by Nancy and Dusty Heuston, last year we engaged over 80 school stakeholders in a comprehensive strategic planning process. Evolutionary in nature, building on historic strengths and informed by our long-standing commitment to the liberal arts, the board of trustees adopted a strategic plan in early June that charts an exciting future for Waterford. A cornerstone goal from the beginning at Waterford has been the cultivation of the habits of mind and heart that lead our graduates to pursue the well-lived life, service beyond self, and contribution to communities in which our alumni live and learn. This ethic was resoundingly affirmed during our planning process! Philanthropy’s direct definition is to serve others in the love of humanity. I am humbled and inspired to be part of a 2   Wate r ford S cho ol An nu a l R e p or t 2 0 1 7 - 1 8

community that so steadfastly believes in this sacred virtue of giving back. Our newly-crafted vision speaks well to this aspiration of “inspiring lives of meaning and purpose.” On behalf of our talented faculty and staff, thank you for your generous philanthropic support. Together, we are shaping leaders of the future; bright, curious, life-long learners fortified with the skills and dispositions to positively influence the world around them. Andrew Menke Head of School

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR BY J B TAY L O R , J R .

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we welcome all Waterford families to the 20182019 school year. We hope you have settled into a nice rhythm over the first few weeks. I love the feeling on campus this time of year. An optimism and earnestness about learning and discovery permeate the school. We look forward to another great year and we’re grateful for the Head of School, the faculty, the administration and the support staff who all work tirelessly to deliver an amazing educational experience for our children.

We see an inspiring future guided by goals intentionally built on the strong foundations of our past. The vitality and continued growth of Waterford’s unique programs depend upon the generosity of our community. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend a sincere thank you to all who have given so generously, in time and resources, to building Waterford. I hope you will join us in continuing to support and build Waterford’s exciting and bright future. JB Taylor, Jr. Chairman, Board of Trustees

At the school’s recent Back to School Night, I had the opportunity to present the school’s newly adopted strategic plan: Waterford Rising. The plan is the culmination of a yearlong effort by board members, parents, faculty, alumni and students, all who collaborated to analyze and assess what has made Waterford great in the past and the path that will keep Waterford great in the future. The school’s mission, while recently rephrased, remains the same in its direction and lofty ambitions: “To provide students with a world-class liberal arts education that stimulates intellect, ignites passion, and shapes character.”

A LETTER FROM THE D I R E C T O R O F A D VA N C E M E N T BY BEN HOKE

This past year was an exciting year for the Advancement team at Waterford. We thoroughly enjoyed the strategic planning process, particularly the plan’s renewed emphasis on partnership and engagement. In addition, a strategic priority in the plan calls for Waterford to continue to grow the vibrant culture of philanthropy. As we celebrate your generosity in this report and more fully engage with you in the years ahead, let’s partner to create an even stronger Waterford School for the students of today and for generations to come. We appreciate the many donors to our 2017-2018 philanthropic efforts. I am pleased to report that we raised over $1.4M in overall giving. Thanks to so many in the community who supported the School through the Waterford Fund, endowment, special events, scholarship, or with directed gifts to specific programs or departments. Thank you to a remarkable core of volunteers who willingly invested so much time and energy to elevating the Waterford experience. The Annual Report not only recognizes philanthropy and volunteerism, but also serves to inform our community that Waterford, like most independent schools, relies on annual, tax-deductible gifts – in addition to tuition – to balance the 1 2   Wate r ford S cho ol An nu a l R e p or t 2017- 18

budget each year and to generate revenue that supports our people and programs. Enclosed, you can find a summary financial report, as well as an update on enrollment and college matriculation. And, you will enjoy reading five new profiles highlighting Alumni who are living out our vision and pursuing lives of meaning and purpose. Finally, we are thrilled to announce a few new milestones in dollars raised and overall participation: • Waterford Fund: $805,000 (19% over prior year) • 64% Parent Participation (increase of 2%) • 100% Board and Faculty & Staff giving • Class VII – highest class participation at 74% • 60 New Parent gifts Thank you for supporting Waterford and affirming your commitment to our shared mission to stimulate intellect, ignite passion, shape character, and inspire a lifelong love of learning Sincerely, Ben Hoke Director of Advancement

WAT E R FO R D F U N D The Waterford Fund is the cornerstone of all fundraising at Waterford – the foundation upon which other fundraising efforts rest. Waterford, like most independent schools, relies on annual, tax-deductible gifts – in addition to tuition – to balance the budget each year and generates revenue that supports core activities, program enrichment, and school development. During the 2017-2018 fiscal year, Waterford Fund contributions totaled $805,000. Gifts ranged from $1 to $50,000 and were received from 600 donors. When combined, gifts to the Waterford Fund create extraordinary educational opportunities for our students. Donors to endowment funds, restricted gifts, and Founders Gala participants are listed in separate sections of this publication.

Waterford greatly appreciates the generous financial support provided by grandparents and past grandparents. Thank you!

G I V I N G T O W AT E R F O R D ’ S ENDOWMENT FUND Endowment growth is an area of strategic importance for Waterford. Giving to the Endowment Fund provides a unique opportunity to you as a donor to make a dramatic impact on a part of the Waterford experience that you care about the most. Gifts and pledges to the Waterford Endowment in the form of cash or appreciated securities have the most immediate impact. However, gifts to the Endowment can also occur over a longer term through bequests in estates, gifts of real estate, and structured planned giving instruments.

Endowment gifts to Waterford can be designated in the following ways: • Unrestricted gifts (of any dollar size) can be made to the general endowment which ensures our ability to sustain the financial strength of our School. • Gifts can be used to establish a new general or restricted endowed fund. If restricted, the terms specifying how the income shall be used will be established by the donor. Minimum gift levels are required for naming rights. • Gifts can be made to any one of our existing named endowed funds (see below) should there be one that reflects your philanthropic interests.

ENDOWMENT As a result of new gifts to endowment and bolstered by earnings on investment, Waterford’s endowment has grown to $4,215,000, which has more than doubled from 5 years ago. The endowment provides long-term financial strength to the School and remains a core component in planning for the future. The Investment Committee follows sound due-diligence processes, including careful monitoring of our investments, to protect and enhance these funds for the continued financial benefit of the School. As always, the School is committed to transparency of all financial objectives as well as faithful stewardship to past and future donors. If you are considering an endowment gift or have any questions, please contact the Advancement Office at 801.816.2217.

W H AT I S A N E N D O W M E N T F U N D ? The Waterford School is deeply grateful to parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends who have supported our endowment. Endowment donors leave a lasting legacy at the School; ensuring our financial strength, expanding our curricular and extracurricular offerings, and continuing to attract and retain exceptional faculty and students. Waterford endowment funds are invested in perpetuity and fund income provides resources used to meet current operating budget priorities. Gifts may be given through outright and multi-year cash gifts, gifts of stock, or bequests. Our endowment is managed by the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees, consistent with the Investment Policy, as approved by the Board.

Waterford’s Endowment Fund is a savings account for the school, which is invested according to policies adopted by the Board of Trustees and the Endowment Advisory Committee. A portion of the Endowment is then spent each year to help cover the school’s annual expenses, either for the general operating budget or for specific programs designated by the donor.

W H Y I S I T I M P O R TA N T ? The Endowment Fund can provide a steady source of income to Waterford, making it possible for the school to be less reliant on tuition and annual fundraising programs to balance the budget each year. In effect, a larger Endowment Fund enhances Waterford’s ability to fulfill its mission now, and for many years to come.

T H E M I K A FA M I LY Over the past 37 years, many families have made an indelible mark on Waterford. The Mika Family is one that has not only impacted the past, but made a profound impact on its future. In May 2018, the Mika family gave a $100,000 gift, a portion of which will support the previously established Nancy and Dustin Heuston Endowed Chair. The Heuston Chair, established in 2015, honors the legacy of Waterford Founders, Nancy and Dusty Heuston. For the selected faculty member, fund income supports their professional growth and overall contributions to Waterford. The remaining portion of this generous gift was also a means to demonstrate years of gratitude for the many positive experiences, coaches, and teammates that impacted their family. For this reason, Sue and Ron Mika, along with their children who attended Waterford, Jaklyn ’06, Kirsten ’08, Alek ’10, Eric ‘13, Jacob ’15 and Kyle ’18, established the Mika Family Athletic Endowment Fund to support Waterford’s Upper School Athletic Program. “We are incredibly appreciative of the Mika family’s continued support of Waterford and our Athletic Program,” said Waterford’s Athletic Director, Craig Morris. “This gift will allow us to target additional resources to all of our teams as needs arise and opportunities for improvement present themselves. It will have a profound effect on the advancement of the athletic program moving forward. We appreciate the 3 4   Wate r ford S cho ol An nu a l R e p or t 2017- 18

Mika family’s legacy and all that they have forged in our program on and off the field.” Endowment donors like the Mika family leave a lasting impact at the School, ensuring our financial strength, expanding our curricular and extracurricular offerings, and continuing to attract and retain exceptional faculty and students. Waterford endowment funds are invested in perpetuity and endowment income provides resources used to meet current operating budget priorities. Endowment growth will provide a steady source of income to Waterford, making it possible for the school to be less reliant on tuition and annual fundraising programs to balance the budget each year. In effect, a larger Endowment Fund enhances Waterford’s ability to fulfill its mission now, and for years to come. Even with Kyle’s graduation in May 2018 and Ron’s retirement as Board Chair, the Mika Family will continue to leave their legacy at Waterford. Their example as generous supporters— in time, treasure, and talent—reminds our community about the true impact of philanthropic support, as well as our shared vision to inspire individuals to pursue lives of meaning and purpose.

A LEGACY OF SE RVICE LEE BROMLEY

KELLEY HEUSTON

“With gratitude for her dedication to growing and nurturing the Waterford School community.” Lee, I speak for all, of whom we in this room are but a small fraction, in offering our deepest appreciation for a lifetime of hard work, of caring deeply, of shaping and perpetuating the ideal that is the heart of The Waterford School. You leave us better than we would otherwise have been. You leave us with something beautiful and important – less tangible than the Garden plaque, but more enduring, something that will always be imprinted deep down in the very bones of this place that you have loved.”

“But her excellence doesn’t end with her style: the content of her teaching has also been revolutionary for hundreds of students she has taught over the years. Even her classroom is part of her teaching, filled as it is with quotes and images that emphasize her core values of equality, moral rectitude, and justice. Her students have come to understand just how deeply poverty divides America and determines our experiences here, and they have learned to be fierce advocates for civil rights.” - Kristin South

JA N VA N A R S D E L L In honor of Jan’s long and beloved service at Waterford, and in addition to the bench that was given in his honor to the school, the Alumni Association has established an award E S TA B L I S H E D M AY 2 0 1 8

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Established by the Waterford School Alumni Association, the Jan Van Arsdell Distinguished Alumni Award is the school’s highest honor bestowed upon alumni. Created in 2018 to honor the retirement of Jan Van Arsdell, founding faculty member and much beloved English and History teacher, the annual award is presented to Waterford Alumni who exemplify our core values, serve as enthusiastic supporters of the School, and emulate Jan’s passion for the liberal arts. Each fall, the Alumni community submits nominations for the Van Arsdell Distinguished Alumni Award. A selection committee considers candidates for the award based on the award criteria. Once selected, the recipient is formally approved by the Head of School and the Alumni Association Council. During the same school year, the award is presented to the recipient during reunion celebrations. Although there may be nominees each year, the award is only given when the honor is appropriate.

FOUN DE RS GAL A Parents and friends of Waterford enjoyed a beachy vibe and fun on the boardwalk at this year’s Founders Gala, California Dreamin’. Beach Boys tunes set the mood for cotton candy, cornhole, temporary tattoos, caricatures, a photo booth, and milkshakes. The event was held at the Marriott City Center and included a social hour, dinner, raffle, paddle raise, and live auction. The Gala was a success on many fronts; generous donors provided hot items and unique experiences for the raffle and auction, corporate sponsors made the evening possible through their contributions to the event, and enthusiastic H E A R T F E LT G R A T I T U D E

party-goers bid on items and donated to the school during the paddle raise. Raffle and auction winners won deluxe trips to Napa, Hawaii, Sun Valley, and, of course, the California beach. Others won tickets to concerts, Cirque du Soleil, a Jazz game, and the BYU-Utah Holy War. Attendees had the opportunity to sign up for additional events including a Parent Progressive Dinner, Poker Night, and Waterford Night at the Bees. Over $180,000 was raised to benefit the students and programs of the Waterford School. It was a memorable night full of energy, friendship, and loyalty to Waterford.

A L U M N I A S S O C I AT I O N BY MI KE JU DD ’00, ALUM N I ASSOC I ATI O N PR E SI DE NT In my five years as President of the Alumni Association, I’ve occasionally crossed paths with alumni who speak fondly about their time at Waterford, but who wonder aloud whether they’ve “done Waterford proud” since leaving. The sentiment, I think, is that there are two tiers of Waterford alumni: the decorated—who have been heaped with plaudits during their educational and professional careers—and the undecorated. Too often, alums have told me that they belong in that second tier, and that without a stack of plaudits, they feel anxious about returning to campus.

recognition for his poems. But I’m certain there were moments when the two roles came into conflict, and I’m certain that if Stevens had set his eccentric poetry projects aside to better train his focus on his more august executive role, we’d all be poorer for it.

Over the last five years, I’ve grown more and more convinced that this is wrong, and that as long as this “two-tier sentiment” exists among our alumni, it’s our job to correct it. One way to do so is to look closely at the school’s own ideals. Recently, after a year of reflection and self-study, Waterford identified five core values—Integrity, Excellence, Curiosity, Responsibility, and Caring. If as alumni we grow preoccupied with a narrow type of excellence—CVs, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, glossy-page profiles—while devaluing quiet virtues, we misstep.

This isn’t a call for Waterford alumni to abandon their careers en masse to write poems and stories. But I hope we do rethink what it means to “excel” after Waterford. And I hope that, as an alumni community, we grow more adept at celebrating integrity, curiosity, responsibility, and caring. After all, we often reveal ourselves more truthfully during the “walk to work”— whether in our off hours or in the long years before we fully find ourselves—than we do at any other time.

Put more bluntly, it’s easy to obsess over day jobs. As a lawyer who often misses poetry, I think almost daily about Wallace Stevens, who worked for decades as an insurance executive at the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company. Stevens never learned to drive, and as he walked to and from work each day, he worked through his poems in his head, plodding out the rhythms with his footsteps. Many luminaries, of course, stumbled into excellence only after everything else fell apart. Before writing Dubliners, James Joyce famously gave up on medical school, scooted around Europe chasing teaching jobs that never materialized, and returned to Dublin to open a movie theater, which almost immediately failed. George Saunders was almost forty when his first story collection was published—after jobs in a slaughterhouse, a convenience store, and a Beverly Hills hotel, he wandered away from a gathering in his Texas hometown, paged through a People magazine, read an article about Raymond Carver and Jay McInerney, and, in something of a panic, fled back to school to become a writer himself.

Warmly, Mike

He remembers Waterford faculty as subject-matter experts who pursued teaching in order to share their passion with their students. The depth and enthusiasm faculty brought to their disciplines gave students an appreciation for not only the subject matter, but also for the value of embracing intellectual challenges. Sawyer went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a master’s degree in Robotic Engineering. Following graduation, he immediately joined the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he has been a robotics and systems engineer for three years. At JPL, Sawyer develops arm software for the Mars 2020 rover and for the Mars Sample Return campaign. He also led the development of Limbi, a self-mobile robotic limb for in-space assembly. Sawyer credits Dr. Dusty Heuston (Waterford Institute Founder) for two particularly influential experiences while he was a Waterford. The first, where Sawyer gained his first exposure to computer programming, was being offered an internship at the Waterford Institute for two summers. Dr. Heuston provided the real-world opportunity and hands-on experience to work on his computer programming. The second moment for Sawyer was when Dr. Heuston provided the seed money for him and a friend to enter a Robotics competition. It was this initial support that evolved into Waterford’s FIRST robotics team. Sawyer notes how, “Dusty’s vision and willingness to contribute had a huge impact.” Sawyer credits his experience on Waterford’s first Robotics team as a critical influence on his career path to becoming a Robotics Engineer for NASA in the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL). More generally, Waterford provided a great environment for

In reflecting on his experience of his 14 years at Waterford starting in PreK-3, Sawyer emphasizes how the School’s comprehensive academic experience, enriched by passionate faculty and enhanced by innovation, shaped his academic passions and helped him land his dream job.

Under Kathy’s mentorship, Lauren was able to participate in established string ensembles, and together, they created new ensembles such Piano Quartets and Quintets for advanced chamber music opportunities. Lauren fondly recalls “coaching” the Brahms F Minor Quintet along with Mrs. Morris, a challenging piece for piano and string quartet and an amazing experience for a high school student, usually offered only at conservatories. Lauren is equally enthusiastic about many of her other educational experiences at Waterford—studying ballet, learning French, auditing a German class, solving complex math problems, performing in the jazz band, and discovering a love of literature. She notes she maintains her friendship with English teacher, Charles Rosett, to this day. In reflecting on her Waterford experience, Lauren describes school life as a “haven for Ravens” and, at the same time, an invigorating intellectual environment. Lauren continued her musical education at California State University-Fullerton in Los Angeles and then at the University of Michigan. She received a Master of Music in Conducting at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

Lauren campaigned to attend Waterford as early as the 7th grade, having been drawn to the School for its community of excellence, as well as the beauty of the campus. She was thrilled when circumstances aligned for her in 2001 to join Class X. Lauren says that her time at Waterford prepared her for a life of selfreliance—providing a student-focused academic environment that pushed her to discover her passions and interests.

As a young musician, Lauren’s ambition was to become a concert pianist, though she eventually decided to pursue a career as a conductor. Conducting, for Lauren, is the confluence of many different skill sets and gives her the opportunity to lead. She has served as the Assistant Conductor for the University of Michigan Arts Chorale, the Assistant Conductor of the RIT Orchestra, the Assistant Conductor of the University of Buffalo Orchestra, the Music Director of the Eastman Opera Collective and the Director of Community Concerts for the Singing City Choir.

As a budding young musician, Lauren felt that Waterford not only accommodated her needs, but also encouraged her talents. The School’s arts and academic programs helped her develop the discipline and self-motivation needed to be both a musician and a strong student. Kathy Morris, Music Department Chair, was an extremely important mentor, encouraging Lauren to balance her

She currently serves as the Music Director of Ensemble Id and maintains an active schedule with her piano duo, Duo Sarteano. In the Fall of 2018, Lauren began her first full-time job as the Director of Orchestra and Choirs at the Knox School, an independent school in St. James, New York. She is excited to go back to an independent school after her own formative experience at Waterford.

PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER

P AT R I C K R A N D A K ‘ 9 8 Patrick’s most influential and favorite teacher was Tillman Crane, who ran the photography department in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His passion and mentorship guided Patrick throughout both the creative and scientific aspects of photography and printmaking. “I worked side by side with Tillman as his darkroom assistant,” Randak says, “and Dusty Heuton (Waterford Institute Founder) was dedicated to the development of a stellar photography department.”, says Patrick, details that only bolstered his photography experience at Waterford. Alongside his passion for photography, Patrick was a member of the ski team, racquetball team, and participated in rock climbing. After graduating from The Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Patrick moved to New York City to intern for and ultimately assist the celebrity photographer, Mark Seliger. During this time, Seliger was shooting covers for Rolling Stone and GQ, as well as producing TV album art and movie posters. Patrick says, “I was prepared for the role because I had the technical and analytical skills to manage work in a competitive and demanding environment. Because of the computer skills I gained at Waterford, I was able to help Seliger bridge the digital gap, an advantage I had over many of my peers.” Patrick worked for Seliger for five years before beginning his freelance career in 2010. He has built a niche photographing the fitness and activewear industry allowing him to combine his skills with his passion for the outdoors.

In 1985, Patrick joined Waterford as a Class I student, the same year that Waterford opened its Sandy campus. His parents compared schools in the area and were drawn to Waterford’s progressive liberal arts approach to education. Patrick’s early exposure to fine arts, specifically photography, had a great impact on his life—he has worked with hundreds of people during his professional career, but none who had the early exposure to photography that Waterford provided.

When describing Waterford, the word “home” comes to Patrick’s mind. He says that he grew up on campus and it grew with him. In first grade, he attended school in a single hallway of what is now the Lower School; by the time he graduated, Waterford had expanded to the almost 41-acre campus that it is today. Patrick identifies Waterford as a consistent positive force that has given him the ability to manage many of life’s hurdles. He advises Waterford graduates to have a plan but be flexible and always seek to work outside of your comfort zone as, “some of the best opportunities come from the unexpected.”

“I was prepared for the role because I had the technical and analytical skills to manage work in a competitive and demanding environment. Because of the computer skills I gained at Waterford, I was able to help Seliger bridge the digital gap, an advantage I had over many of my peers.” PATRICK RANDAK ’98

Liz was also particularly drawn to History and German—fondly remembering her Class V teacher, Mrs. Goodson, and her infectious enthusiasm for American History. Liz attended Brigham Young University where she majored in Economics and German. Liz credits her time at Waterford, which challenged her at every grade level, for preparing her for the rigor of college and for the reality that life would be full of opportunities, and she was prepared with the skills to overcome and succeed. After graduating from BYU, Liz worked for Sears Holdings in Chicago in a business strategy role, then moved to Boston where she currently works as a Senior Associate Consultant for Bridgespan, a global nonprofit organization. Bridgespan collaborates with mission-driven leaders, organizations, philanthropists, and investors to break cycles of poverty and dramatically improve the quality of life for those in need.

Liz Calder, who joined Waterford in Class I, says she developed her a passion for inquiry and intellectual curiosity that she has carried with her through her college and professional life. Not only was she exposed to many different disciplines, but Waterford encouraged her to always explore and challenge herself. Although, she admits that she is not a natural musician, she felt

In reflecting on her favorite memories of Waterford, Liz identified graduation, “I remember Nancy Heuston giving me a hug and telling me that I was a good person and that she was proud of me.” Three words Liz uses to describe Waterford are: supportive, rigorous, and beautiful. She considers Waterford beautiful— for both the physical beauty of the campus and surrounding mountains as well as in belonging to a community with a rich variety of disciplines. It’s no wonder that Liz’s words to live by are, “treat everyone that you come in contact with respect and take an interest in the people around you, all the people around you.”

ANNIE AGLE ‘07 Annie was the president of the Community Service Club while at Waterford which exposed her to programs, events, and the importance of being an active member of the community. After going on Waterford’s annual community service trip to the Navajo Reservation, she had absolute clarity of purpose. Annie attended Barnard College in New York City and then interned for two years with the Phyllis Chesler Organization, a leading women’s rights NGO addressing honor killings, human trafficking, gender violence, and forced marriage. After graduating from Barnard, Annie stepped into the role of Deputy Director at the Phyllis Chesler Organization.

Describing herself as as a bookish, shy, child, Annie remembers researching Waterford on her own prior to entering Class II. After touring the school, she remembers declaring, “Yes! This is my school.” In 1997, Annie started at Waterford, and she says the most meaningful impact of her Waterford experience has been her development of a love of learning for its own sake, and that she feels the school put her on a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. During her time at Waterford, Annie enjoyed being behind the camera for AP Photography, joining every birding trip offered, falling in love with rowing, and playing her violin. She says that Waterford helped create intellectual balance in her life by stressing the importance of not just academics, but poetry, art, and music. Annie writes, “Those creative pursuits have been crucial to me personally, as I have weathered moments of selfdoubt and disappointment.”

Annie spent time on the front lines of international development and gaining valuable field experience. After years of field work, she joined Development Three, a NYC-based international consultancy firm focused on increasing programmatic and organization effectiveness in the aid sector. Annie credits Waterford for giving her incredible writing skills as well as a love of the math and sciences, both of which have been invaluable in her career. During her field experience, Annie found there was a need to use a more scientific approach to non-profit work. Quantifying inputs and outcomes to make operations leaner and more effective is something she first learned at Waterford. Annie says Waterford also gave her the writing skills she has used in creating affidavits, case work, and legal pressings in legislation in Pakistan that ended child marriages, and prosecution laws to end honor violence. She says being able to articulate issues is not just a matter of conviction, but also an opportunity to express yourself. Annie insists that writing “is one of the most critical skill sets you have even if you end up in a quantitative field. Being able to communicate with others, argue effectively, listen to others, these are learned and practiced skills as much as they are a matter of personality.” Currently, Annie resides in Park City and New York City and she works at Cotopaxi as the Director of Impact. She champions and steers corporate social responsibility from reviewing grantees and overseeing programming, to ensuring the company’s supply chain is sustainable. She directs the company to make good on its “Gear for Good” promise, knowing that quantifying that promise will ensure its success.
