Rocking Boats and Sunset Sounds! It was a pleasure to be present at the docking of LV18 last month, after the much anticipated arrival of The Boat That Rocked. The former lightvessel looks resplendent in Trinity red and brightens up the arrival of winter on the Waterfront. I was also delighted to be on the marina for the very first Clarion Call last month; what an atmosphere and what a turnout of residents and visitors, all lining the waterside and experiencing this part of the SPILL Festival. Humbling and thought-provoking were just two descriptions that I heard during the first night’s transmission over the hundreds of speakers mounted for the occasion.

21S T BIRTHDAY celebrations

WRITTEN BY LOUISE SHADBOLT

Last month saw the 21st anniversary of ABP’s operation in Ipswich and we were delighted to celebrate with the Port team. We were invited to the Old Custom House on the 12th October to celebrate this wonderful milestone, where firstly Paul Ager – Divisional Port Manager – and then Andrew Harston – Short Seas Port Director – addressed their invited guests, provided an overview of the preceding years and then thanked their friends and associates for their continued support. Waterfront Life has only been in ABP’s life for 2 years, but we have forged an excellent working relationship with Paul and his team and through these regular editorials, we have been able to provide a real behind-the-scenes view of exactly what our neighbours do in and for - the area.

ABP had hired the Sailing Barge Victor for this special occasion and once welcomed aboard by the ever-genial Captain Wes, we enjoyed tasty food, good wine and a lovely atmosphere; with everyone relaxed and enjoying their Friday night! Despite it being a very windy evening, it was lovely to be able to have the chance to sail on the Victor and get a feel of its past. The historic sailing barge has had a varied life; it was first built in 1895 and was used to transport a variety of items such as oil, grain and other bulk cargo. Not forgetting being in the middle of both World Wars, even being a survivor of a direct hit from a bomb! These days the barge is used for public cruising - hired out for parties or special occasions. Wes and his team are the perfect hosts, Wes sailing the barge effortlessly – despite the wind – and his ‘below-decks’ colleagues having time to really look after their guests. The galley may be small, but the food that comes out of it is first class and would put some restaurants to shame! So here’s to the next 21 years of ABP in Ipswich and to continuing our blossoming relationship with our very hard working neighbour.

BEHIND THE SCENES

THE VIEW FROM THE

SALTHOUSE WRITTEN BY RICHARD STEWART

Piemonte Wine Night The Salthouse Harbour Hotel boasts that its regular wine nights are hosted by a team of specialist wine consultants along with a leading wine merchant; AND that guests will be treated to a delicious menu of great food and have lots of fun! Last month, my wife and I put the boasts to the test. Seeing the menu and then noting that October’s wine night was based upon produce from Northern Italy, I was very much looking forward to educating my taste buds. Being a red wine drinker, but normally choosing France’s offerings, I was particularly looking forward to meeting the 2012 Barolo. My brother-in-law has been known to bang on about Barolo, but I have always found it far too ‘heavy’; a fact that I quickly imparted on leading wine merchant – Ed Keith – our host for the night. During the tasting of the ‘arrival’ drink, a very acceptable 2017 Gavi del Commune di Gavi ‘Fossili’, I discussed the

eagerly anticipated Barolo battle with Ed. I was assured that I would change my opinion of Barolo ‘tonight’ and patiently waited. A mackerel fillet with fennel, watercress, red chicory & orange was accompanied by another excellent 2017 Italian, this time a Roero Arneis ‘Le Madri’, whilst Ed explained his passion for his chosen industry and effortlessly talked through the grape, area and producer. Antipasto followed, with the highlight being pancetta wrapped figs, as a 2015 Barbera d’Asti ’16 Mesi Le Orme’ gently fizzed away in the mouth and completely changed my perception of ‘Asti’. Then came the moment I was anticipating the most, the arrival of braised ox cheeks, joined on the plate by a courgette, pea & basil risotto; but most importantly, joined on the table by the 2012 Barolo Riserva. Now…one thing that I have learnt about great wine nights and exceptional merchants/ sommeliers, is the ability to pair the food with the wine, and I mean really pair these facets. So far, the fish had been truly lifted by the fennel, the antipasto had been brought to life by the fizz….but the deep ranging tastes of the ox were simply transformed by the Barolo. Ed was right; the Barolo was lighter than expected, whilst still delivering a rounded taste and complemented the meat superbly. Job done! We finished the night with a Moscato d’Asti dessert wine, flourless chocolate cake and orange & pear sorbet, but the event belonged IMAGE CREDIT : SALTHOUSE the Barolo (andLIFE Ed of course). •toWATERFRONT

THE LV18 LIGHTSHIP

AHOY THERE! You would have had to have been hiding under a rock for the past couple of months to have not noticed some exciting goings-on at Orwell Quay. The LV18 Lightship was due to arrive at its temporary location on the Waterfront back in early September, but the trip from Harwich was delayed due to insurance issues and then further by adverse weather. On the 25th September, the ship was finally welcomed through the lock gate and settled into its new home outside Cult Café Bar. The unique, historic vessel is the only surviving lightship in British waters not to have been stripped of its accommodation, and has been restored by a dedicated team of volunteers. LV18 still contains the

original crew quarters, galley, messroom and six Gardner diesel generators to power the lantern, foghorns and ship’s equipment. Restoration of this landmark ship has enabled The Pharos Trust – LV18 owners – to cater for visitors with different needs; whether these be educational, disability-related or marinebased training and courses. Alongside the historical and educational benefits of the vessel, pirate radio also has its ties to the LV18. The ‘offshore radio explosion’ of the 1960s may have originated in London, but the service was accessed and supplied in Harwich: the radio ships were anchored in Harwich waters, just offshore and outside of UK territories. Johnnie Walker – one of the

first pirate radio DJs – was then asked (and delightfully accepted) the honour of becoming a Patron of the Trust. He and many other pirate radio DJs spent their time ‘spinning discs’ aboard the LV18. The ship is home to many items of pirate radio memorabilia. The LV18 is available to view by arrangement now that we enter the colder seasons – for more information visit www.lv18.org

LA TOUR CYCLE CAFÉ Any recent visitor to the Waterfront would have noticed the new pop up, La Tour Cycle Café, based next to Dance East. Previously based in Tower Street, La Tour is a Community Interest Company which is not for profit and is run by the lovely Anna Matthews.

FASHION FANTASY WRITTEN BY LOUISE SHADBOLT

When I was invited to Suffolk Fashion Show on Thursday the 4th of October, I jumped at the chance to attend! Hosted by Pam Davis of Fashion Candy Style in support of Lighthouse Women’s Aid - which provides help to women and their children experiencing domestic abuse within relationships, both personal and family - the night raised £2,315: match-funded by Barclays Bank. An incredible amount of money for such a worthy cause which is close to my heart!

Any profit that Anna makes in the Café goes straight to help run the other number of projects she is involved in; mostly with helping the homeless. Many people who work for Anna were previously homeless and Anna has helped get them back on their feet. The Café has a huge community focus and puts on a variety of events for all visitors to enjoy. Anna plans for La Tour to be settled on the Waterfront for a couple of years, before hoping to move onto a project in Ipswich utilising a burntout church; receiving Heritage Funding which will allow them to convert it into a hub to continue further her efforts to help the local community.

Arriving at the event, I was greeted with not only the fashion show itself, but the ‘5th Avenue Fashion Arcade’, showcasing catwalk-partnering boutiques. Names featured included QUIZ, Cake & Catwalk, Simply Splendid, Maud’s Attic and Truffle. The event not only included women’s fashion, but also highlighted menswear: showcasing pieces from Moss Bros, Twist & Shout and Zest. We dined on canape-style food, antipasti boards and dessert tapas as the show commenced; kicked off by the director herself. Pam introduced herself and shared her incredible journey to where she is today - including regular appearances on daytime show This Morning. We learned Pam’s goal: to create an annual fashion event for Suffolk that will put the county on the fashion calendar, and she is doing just that!

IDEAS FOR IPSWICH Residents and visitors to Ipswich are ‘ambitious and impatient for positive change’ according to Terry Baxter, head of Ipswich Central. And back in May 2018, renowned architect Allies & Morrison tackled this notion by proposing several radical ideas for improving both the town and Waterfront areas. We were invited in October to attend an event that delved deeper into these ideas, to see what the future of Ipswich could really look like… In a time where food and beverage outlets are declining faster than retail, development for the town centre is begging an interesting question; what next? The shopping trends of the average

consumer are rapidly changing from needs-based to ‘wants’, and our humble town is required to make some positive progression in its entirety to encourage people to not only shop in Ipswich, but to stay and experience what it has to offer. As reported during our interview with Terry Hunt - chair of the Ipswich Vision - back in May, shoppers spending just one hour longer in the town – whether that be on retail, restaurants or entertainment – is worth an extra £26million per year to the local economy. So, how do we get there? One of the most high-profile changes of late, is of course the Cornhill (see page 11). The redevelopment of this previously mediocre space is set to provide a huge boost to the area, but will inevitably become part of normal life whilst the ‘next big thing’ is mulled over by residents and the public sector alike. Steve Walker, Director of Allies & Morrison – the firm responsible for huge headline-grabbing projects such as the Kings Cross development and the London 2012 Olympics masterplan that saw Stratford transformed from dull to desirable – has pitched several big plans for how they see Ipswich transforming over the next couple of decades. A&M’s

10 • 10 N OVE • NMEBE W RS 2018 • WATERFRONT • WATERFRONT LIFE LIFE

starting focus for these ideas was looking at the history and the ‘why’ of Ipswich’s existence: its maritime location. The longest continuously inhabited town in Britain, Ipswich has been longestablished as a cultural and mercantile gateway to Europe. Whilst being viewed as ‘out in the sticks’ by many – due to its semi-rural Suffolk location and minor road links – Ipswich actually lends itself to a vast opportunity of European trade thanks to its strategic coastal location. A&M took these points into consideration when putting forward their proposed ideas – and the results have been quite stirring! One of their main focuses of improvement is the current gyratory [one-way] system around College Street and Star Lane. Many residents and businesses alike will agree that this pedestrian-unfriendly area vastly splits the Waterfront from the rest of the town – making even the thought of accessing on-foot a difficulty. A&M suggest that making Star Lane a two-way system and turning College and Key Streets into a ‘shared space’ environment will encourage people visiting the Waterfront to also venture to the town centre – and vice versa. Showcasing the incredible

‘RIVERSIDE PARK’ ARTIST IMPRESSION, ALLIES & MORRISON

architectural structuring in the St Peter’s Dock area – including Wolsey’s Gate, which currently sits sadly on the main road with little attraction to visit it – will enable this space to become a cultural and entertainment hub. Steve also noted the growing ‘business corridor’ heading from the railway station down Princes Street and beyond. This area – whilst offering excellent business potential, particularly to companies expanding from London – is separated from the rest of the Waterfront by the mostly-unused commercial riverside area between Princes Street bridge and the skate park. A&M have illustrated a beautiful riverside park feature to connect these two areas and provide a haven amidst activity for residents and visitors alike. A highly feasible option, given that it would only require a 20-40m wide space to implement. Looking closer to the town centre, Lloyds Avenue has somewhat fallen by the wayside with the Cornhill redevelopment being centre stage. The road – mainly used as a taxi rank at present – features restaurants and entertainment (including the new Three Wise Monkeys venue due to open in a few weeks) that are often overlooked due to their out-

11 • N OVE M BE R 2018 • WATERFRONT LIFE

of-sight location. A&M’s aim is to create a ‘higher quality environment’; pedestrianising the road and allowing venues to spill out into the street to create a more boulevard-style welcoming seen in the likes of some European cities. Some great ideas to be considered over the coming years, but do A&M believe they are achievable? “These ideas are designed to be considered over a long timescale – we’re talking the next 25 years, rather than the next 3-5 years,” explains Steve. Something to look forward to with anticipation then!

baiting and martyr-burning [1515-1558]. By 1800, the Cornhill was a bustling and probably very congested space, and in 1868 the Venetian style Town Hall was built and became the seat for justice and local government until the 1960s. The Christmas Light Switch On (22nd November 6.45pm) will formally mark the opening of the new Cornhill; a celebration of what has been achieved and looking forward to both Christmas and beyond. A real tree will again be in situ on the square, and the bauble tree will be situated outside the University Building. On 23rd November a time capsule will be buried on the square to be opened at some point in the distant future.

CORNHILL – A NEW CHAPTER

The Cornhill will play host to a Christmas Craft Market between 10th - 23rd December. The market is being delivered by Eden Crafts and will be housed in a heated marquee.

The completion date for the new Cornhill is fast approaching, and the new square is really taking shape. Much of the paving is now laid - both granite pavers and green granite blocks. The stone benches are now in place and the trees will soon be arriving. The water feature is being tested, and we await the delivery of the stone arches. The Cornhill has been the centre of town life for hundreds of years; the earliest known map of Ipswich dates from 1610 and clearly shows an open rectangular space. The Cornhill became a centre of commerce in medieval times, with corn being traded as well as livestock. After centuries of corn trading, a Corn Exchange was built on the site of the old post office in 1812, to be replaced by the existing Corn Exchange in 1882. There was a grisly side to 16th century Cornhill though: it was the site of regular bull

Looking forward into the New Year, all the Vision partners are committed to working together to deliver a coordinated and varied programme of events on the Cornhill. The Cornhill continues to be a significant part of Ipswich’s life, and we look forward to this next exciting chapter. Becoming a skilled craftsman requires dedication, commitment, and opportunity to flourish. Whether an experienced carpenter, qualified electrician or a graduate, Spirit Yachts seeks out the most passionate of boat builders from all over the UK to join its team and put their skills into practise; building the stunning wooden boats that Spirit is famous for. A very recent example of this talent is Jesse Gillespie, 30. Growing up in Bath, Jesse studied Geography at university but quickly realised his craving to move away from academia and office life; instead pursuing a career in carpentry and turning his hand to stage building. A keen sailor, Jesse later purchased a boat in the North of England and embarked on a three-year sailing trip to the South Pacific. It was during this venture that Jesse realised his dream. Combining his desire to ‘work with his hands’ and his love for boats; he enrolled on a one-year boat building course at a college in Lowestoft, utilising his existing carpentry skills to fine-tune his talent and enabling him to join Spirit Yachts earlier this year. Jesse attributes his ever-growing love for the job to the surroundings he works in. The enthusiasm and passion of the Spirit team allows him to continue to learn on a daily basis, whilst the responsibility and freedom

he has been given [he is in charge of creating the saloon for the boat he is currently working on] enables him to express his ability without constraint – something he feels he would not be empowered with had he found himself working with another company. Under the wing of Spirit Yachts, the sky is the limit for this shining star: Jesse would love to become a Project Manager as his career progresses, and commends the ethics of the company in relation to its support of newly qualified and inexperienced boat builders; nurturing their talents and developing them in a way that brings them to the forefront of wooden boat building. Spirit also works alongside Darren Chittock, head of carpentry and joinery at Suffolk New College, allowing the youngest of rising stars to get an insight into what it is like working for a world-leading boat builder. Spirit Yachts is recruiting for experienced electricians and boat builders to join their busy team. If you are looking for a new role, please send your CV or brief description of experience to enquiries@spirityachts.com.

From waterfront weddings to private parties The day to day diary of Isaacs’ weddings and functions team

Planning weddings and events at Ipswich’s stunning waterfront venue, Isaacs, sounds like an exciting job. It’s certainly rewarding seeing people’s dream events become reality, and with the facilities, the experience and a trusted supplier network in place, it’s easier for the coordinators to make things happen for their clients. Their days are full, though, and never dull, as we found out as we delved behind the scenes for a few mornings with the Isaacs weddings and functions team.

a conference, all in progress. There was much to discuss and coordinate. And with one of those weddings happening the very next weekend, a busy week was looming. Over the coming five days we would meet with several suppliers, as well as the bride and groom. We would also welcome a new couple coming in to book a date and to discuss their wedding wishes, as well as a corporate customer needing a venue for their next client event.

MAKING EACH EVENT A UNIQUE OCCASION Whether fact finding for potential events or presenting plans and progression, client meetings are always a pleasure. As Isaacs makes every function a unique occasion, there are no packages to choose from and everything is coordinated from scratch. There’s no set rule for how many meetings a client may need, either, and the team is on hand to meet and make things happen. Each wedding plan does start with a fact finding meeting, including a tour around the historic buildings that make Isaacs on the Quay. This includes a visit to the feature

BRINGING DREAM EVENTS TO LIFE The days leading up to a wedding or conference are filled with meetings to finalise plans and Isaacs on the morning of an event is, as you’d imagine, a hive of activity. Staff from the bar, the kitchens, the waiting team and the events planners come together just before each function, reviewing last minute detail and ensuring that special requirements, from access through to dietary, including vegetarian, vegan and allergen free food needs, are noted and well catered for. And by the time guests start to arrive, everything is perfectly placed to bring each client’s dreams to life. MENTAL HEALTH amongst

THE YOUNG WRITTEN BY SHARON ALLISON

Mental health has featured in the news a lot recently with reports of the alarming rise in mental illness among the young. We are only just beginning to appreciate the pressures children are under in school and university and as they grow towards adulthood, with many situations being overwhelming for a young person trying to make sense of the world. Data collated by the MindEd Trust shows that half of all mental illness first occurs before the age of 14. Three quarters is established before the end of higher education. Yet there is little or no provision for recognising young people under stress and reaching out to them before they become ill. Only 6% of the mental health budget is spent on young people, and only 3% of the national medical research budget is spent on mental health. Far too many of the young people concerned go on to take their own lives, and my job is often to represent grieving families at the inquest, and then again perhaps later in a civil claim.

It’s easy to see why families so often feel they have to go to the law for explanations and apologies for what happened to their loved ones. One of our cases here at Ashtons Legal involved a young man who had already threatened suicide and was assessed as high risk. which is the whole atmosphere Julien is now trying to achieve at Mariners (1900). Restaurant manager - Barbara - originally from France, was an existing team member whom Julien asked to become manager straight away. Barbara moved to the UK 5 years ago to experience training in catering and loved being here so much she decided to stay. By chance there was a vacancy going at Mariners and she has been there ever since. She too fell in love with the vessel and sees the potential it has.

“1900”

WRITTEN BY LOUISE SHADBOLT

I am very pleased to announce our new partnership with the renowned Waterfront landmark (or should that be watermark?) Mariners - soon to be re-named “1900”, in tribute to the original launch date of this boat-turned-restaurant. Under brand new management, chef/owner Julien Jourdain jumped at the chance to take over the beloved vessel, having first worked onboard in 2000.

It has been quite the adventure for the pair already, bringing the boat ‘back to life’, including a total revamp of the inside. Early next year will see changes to the outside, with Julien wanting ‘1900’ to look more inviting, by opening up the rear deck and featuring music and new seating. All of this to be enjoyed not only overlooking the water, but being the only place on the Marina to sit ON the water. Julien prides himself at not being expensive; the menu will offer value for money, including the wine list. The venue will work very hard with local producers and in the near future Julien is planning on opening up on Sundays, to serve his take on roast dinners, alongside the usual menu. I look forward to seeing the changes throughout the months and seeing the love and dedication the vessel deserves. We will feature more news and history on ‘1900’ next month.

For many years, Julien had his heart set on taking over Mariners one day and the wait paid off in November last year when he approached the previous owners and discussed his plans. Now Julien’s vision is becoming reality and he strongly believes that fate has brought him to this historic vessel. Julien trained in catering college in Calais and has experience in venues in Paris as well as head chef for 10 years at the Waterfront Bar Bistro. These experiences set very high standards but also offered perhaps a slightly more unusual team-management approach,

WRITTEN BY PAM DAVIS

ALL WRAPPED UP Winter is fast approaching, and you know what that means– a totally legitimate excuse to invest in a nice new coat and outerwear! We love winter, it’s the only time you can go mad on clothes (coats, boots, jumpers scarves, you know the deal) and completely justify it. This season, autumn outerwear is seriously exciting, between trenches, tweeds, and puffer coats - all styles are covered.

Faux fur, puffer and longline are some of this year’s most popular styles. Winter coats are foundations for our winter wardrobes; finding the right one could be tricky and time consuming. Take a look at these suggestions for some budget-friendly fashion to make a statement this season: •

Though Britain seems a tad undecided about its weather forecast, being shiveringly cold one day and sweltering hot the next, having a good, reliable winter coat is nonetheless essential for keeping up with nature’s unpredictability.

This year we can still indulge in parkas and pea coats, but we can finally brave something completely new.

A good coat is the core of any fashion weather wardrobe; get it right and you will tackle autumn/winter whatever the elements. From smart checked coats to jackets there are so many styles to choose from, I’m sure you will find a favourite amongst the styles out there on the high street now. Whatever you are after, investment is key. Don’t be afraid of colour either!

THE COAT EDIT Women RAINCOATS – timeless that will see you from winter to winter, great worn with denims and whites to keep it fresh. PUFFER COATS – bang on trend this season and a cool way to jazz up your jeans this winter. TRENCH COATS – reversible trench coats work harder than your average coat – switch it to work with any outfit. TEDDY COATS – this winter teddy bear furs are back to help us stay cosy and on trend. LEOPARD PRINT – animal prints have returned - work this into your wardrobes to stay super stylish. TAILORED COAT - these coats are the easiest way to add a masculine edge to pretty frocks and silky skirts. Opt for a slightly oversized shape to allow extra room for layering up chunky knits underneath.

Men DUFFLE COATS – the easiest thing to wear over suits and casual wear. PEACOATS - one of those styles that makes guys look stylish without shouting about it! WAXED JACKETS – always works with denim, casual shirts, trousers. RAIN MAC – can work in staple shades of black and navy. CAMEL OVERCOATS – a colour that pretty much works with any skin tone. CHECK OVERCOATS – plain overcoats are low risk, perhaps invest in checks & tweeds. PARKAS – are timeless pieces that will work in your wardrobes for years.

HAIRStyle WRITTEN BY MICHAEL ANDRE When it comes to styling kids, the most important thing is understanding where they come from. It’s even more crucial than with an adult, because you never know what’s going on with them in life or especially at school; whether they’re trying to fit in with their mates, or they feel selfconscious about how they look. Until around the age of 5 or 6, most parents will dictate the kind of style their child will have, and after this age they are more able to express their individuality. And they will always go for the complete

opposite of what their Dads or Brothers have! Kids can be quite particular about their hairstyles – but their parents can be even more so! Ultimately though, it’s the kid that has to be happy with the final result. You’ve got to look at individual personality and what they’re into. Some crave originality, whilst some just want a lowmaintenance style. I love the creativity that kids’ hair allows – you can be much less conservative, but you have to be mindful of school rules too. Gone are the 90’s trends of having patterns and logos shaved into boys’ hair! For most kids, their hairstyle is their first way of expressing their personality outside of uniform. No kid wants to come in after school and talk about school! I chat to them about their likes and dislikes, their video games, what sports they play – anything that interests them. It makes them more comfortable and helps them look forward to coming back for their next cut. I’m amazed at how much a child’s attitude to having their hair cut can change over a short space of time too – the first few times they come, it can be hard to get them to sit and relax, but now I have kids that tell me they look forward to getting their hair cut, and actually ask their parents when they can come back!

Changing Seasons WRITTEN BY ANTONIO BELLINI

Well there is absolutely no way of getting away from it: we are deep into autumn and on our way to winter! So now we have to think about a change of clothing; gone are the light linen jackets which are now replaced by wool. If you still want to wear your lighter cotton jackets, then wear a crew or V-neck Marino wool jumper underneath in a darker colour, which will immediately give you a more autumnal look. There are some strange rules in fashion, and one is that you can occasionally wear summer clothes in the winter, if darkened down with a darker jumper or cardigan…but winter clothes can never be worn in the summer, as seeing a Shetland wool jacket being worn in August is just not on! So, continue wearing your cotton chinos, but perhaps think about darkening down the colours in the winter months. You can still wear your sky blue shirts, but with a darker jumper in navy blue, bottle green or even a darker autumnal orange! Maybe this colour is only for the Italians… Next month, we look forward to Christmas and all those wonderful winter outfits.

WATERFRONT Counsel WRITTEN BY CLLR. LIZ HARSANT

A LOAD OF RUBBISH! Apart from potholes, bins are the next issue that local Councillors have numerous complaints about. Most households have 3 bins: black for residual waste, blue for recycling and brown for green and food waste. This all seems relatively simple - but oh no, it has taken years to educate some residents as to what goes into which bins, and still it doesn’t happen!

We have had presentations at Area Committees, distribution of numerous leaflets and even labels stuck on the bins saying what can and can’t go in there. There is always surprise and frustration from residents when one of their bins hasn’t been emptied, and Councillors are left to explain why. I live in a flat and don’t have a brown bin because there is no garden! I feel that the many of us living in flats subsidise those living in properties with gardens. Neighbouring authorities charge residents £50 per annum for a brown bin and that strikes me as being much fairer to those of us living in apartments. In Ipswich, this is added to our Council Tax; a hidden cost. Locally, each bin is emptied fortnightly.

Sometimes the black bin becomes unhygienic and residents ring to say the bin has become infested with maggots. There are companies that go around and clean bins once they’ve been emptied - if you can afford it, I would say this is money well spent. Here in the town centre, lots of businesses put out their rubbish at the end of the working day in black bags, often containing their staff’s leftover lunches. Within a minute, the seagulls are down - pulling open the bags and spreading the rubbish all along the streets – horrible! Some authorities have invested in gull proof bags, but I am told they are expensive and have to be reused. I would say: please let’s invest – why would you not, when what we see here in the middle of the town is very off putting? So, the question most residents ask is ‘why can’t the black bins be emptied weekly, especially during the summer and during the Christmas period?’ Of course, it is cost, but the Council could always look at outsourcing this service which neighbouring authorities have done quite successfully. Could I end by saying…please recycle as much as you can; we are all very aware of the cost to the environment if we fail to do so.

Waterfront MP

LABOUR CONFERENCE WRITTEN BY SANDY MARTIN MP

The Labour Conference in Liverpool this year saw a record number of delegates attend. It is no great surprise to me that so many people want to join our party. Labour is the Party that believes in the police, in schools, in our health service, believes in paying a decent wage for a decent day’s work, building the houses our young families need, protecting the elderly and more vulnerable with affordable social care, and is determined to make our country more equal, giving help to those who need it and demanding that the very rich pay their taxes.

Now it is apparent that the Conservatives are incapable of producing a Brexit deal that meets those tests. We look likely to have a choice between a bad deal or no deal. That is a threat to our whole economy, and to tens of thousands of skilled jobs here in Britain.

We had important issues to debate in order to reach an agreed democratic position, and none was more important than our position on Brexit.

To leave without any deal at all would be a disaster. If Theresa May cannot negotiate one that works, she should call a General Election. And if she is not willing to do that either, then Labour will support whatever can rescue the country from a no-deal Brexit, including a people’s vote on the outcome if necessary.

We are not in Government and so we can’t decide what will happen. What we can and must do is to continue to fight for the things which we know matter to British people whether they voted Leave or Remain. Nobody voted to destroy British industry or British agriculture, nobody voted for fewer jobs or less protection for their rights or the environment. That is why we insisted right from the start that the Government’s Brexit deal must safeguard those things.

We want another General Election now because we want to end austerity now, restore Police Officers and nurses and teachers to their jobs now, bring in free childcare for all working parents now, invest in houses for families now, raise the minimum wage now. So, we will be ready for the next General Election, whenever it comes, and meanwhile we continue to grow our movement to make sure that we can build that better Britain together.

MADAGASCAR THE MUSICAL @ THE REGENT WRITTEN BY AMBER JACOBS

When I saw that Waterfront Life was running a competition to win tickets to see Madagascar The Musical, I was desperate to win! Not only is my 9-yearold son an avid fan of all the movies, but secretly I couldn’t wait to see my favourite character – King Julien the lemur – reimagined live on stage. I have been visiting the Regent since I was a small child, and I love how the personality of the building has been kept throughout the years, with fresh touches being continually added to modernise it. The classic theatre experience remains the same though – even

down to the ice cream vendors mingling with the audience at the interval! Starring Matt Terry – winner of 2016’s X Factor – the show was clearly written to engage with an audience of all ages; with clever adult humour subtly weaved into child-friendly acts of silliness. There were times when jokes were almost lost amongst the noise and excitement of the on-stage antics; if you were paying careful attention, you became one of the few people who were in fits of giggles! But maybe that’s just my childish sense of humour…

29 • NOVE M BE R 2018 • WATERFRONT LIFE

The costuming was brilliant – Melman the giraffe was particularly impressive, with actor Jamie Lee-Morgan expertly moving the extended neck prop around in time with his character. I was stunned by the actors’ abilities to sound just like the movie characters’ voices – there were times at the beginning of the show that I wondered whether Chris Rock himself was behind the scenes replicating the words of Marty the zebra!

The first half seemed to be quite eked-out in terms of the storyline, where the second half really picked up the pace, but it almost felt like this crammed in the rest of the tale. Then the much-loved lemurs made their appearance, with King Julien providing a laugh-a-minute performance, albeit slightly camouflaged by the extremely thick accent put on by the actor Jo Parsons. Again, it took a fair bit of concentration to be one of the lucky ones to enjoy the humour.

Singing was obviously the focal point of the show, and the actors did not disappoint. High expectations were, of course, set for Matt Terry, and he handled his energetic performance and beautiful renditions with ease. Again, I was sceptical as to whether the songs had been pre-recorded because of their quality!

Overall, the show was great family fun, and my son thoroughly enjoyed it. I wouldn’t rush back to see it, but for families with small children that love a bit of song and dance, it ticks all the right boxes.

WATERFRONT Live WRITTEN BY GRAHAM CLEAVER

Graham Cleaver is a director of Ipswich Community Radio (ICRfm), where he presents the Monday Breakfast Show. 105.7fm, online, Radioplayer and Tune In apps. There’s something about this time of year - with the nights growing ever darker and a chill in the misty air - that seems (to me, anyway) to suit unplugged music better than any other genre. This November, the Waterfront provides a feast of folk and original acoustic sounds to relax, and maybe sing along to... The pure voice and fine songwriting of Holly Johnston return to the atmospheric saloon of the Sailing Barge Victor’s ‘Folk on a Boat’ evening on Friday 16th November. Holly’s albums are available through Backwater Records – her fourth is hopefully on course to be released this Christmas. On the Sunday afternoon of that weekend, the legend that is Tony Shevlin brings his very enjoyable Irish folk trio ‘Great Craic’ to Isaacs; while original songs with a more country feel are supplied by Suffolk songwriting duo South Andaura at Grand Central on Saturday 24th. The Steamboat’s own ‘Folk at the Boat’ open mic night is on Thursday 29th. Lovers of traditional song and the sound of voices singing in harmony, shouldn’t miss Chris Rowbury’s seventh annual ‘Singing Safari’ concert at St Peter’s on the 24th. Chris’ inspirational teaching and leadership has taken a group of singers from scratch, to performing as a stunning acapella choir in just 6 weeks. The evening will feature songs from traditions around the world. Guesting this time is the Columbines Folk Trio. 31 • NOVE M BE R 2018 • WATERFRONT LIFE

Festive Street Market WRITTEN BY CATHY FROST

Preparations are full steam ahead for the Saints’ Festive Street Market; this year to be held on Sunday 2nd December. St Peter’s Street will play host to at least 30 stalls, from artisan craft to street food. The Market runs from 10am until 4pm and the street will be closed to traffic all day. Many of our independent businesses will be open all day; a great chance to start your Christmas shopping! Why not start with breakfast on the Waterfront and a leisurely stroll along the marina to take in the great array of stalls and shops - grab elevenses at Applaud, sample lunch from one of our street food vendors or from one of the cafés on the Saints. Then try a mulled wine from the Thomas Wolsey Pub or sample an ice cream from one of our street gems, I -Scream. Later in the day, as it gets dark, venture up to the Cornhill and visit the new plaza, the real Christmas tree and the Christmas lights. 34 • NOVE M BE R 2018

The Saints are easy to get to: a ten-minute walk from Christchurch Park, the University or Ipswich Station. We have many local car parks within walking distance on the Waterfront, Cromwell Square and Cardinal Park. The Markets have been a feature on the Saints for many years. It’s a great way to bring together our community, celebrating all that is good about our vibrant indie businesses and artisans. So far, we have artisan gin and German beer, cakes and bakes, printmakers, glass and weaving and many more great stalls. The Saints Community Interest Company are organising this event, following on from our successful Summer Market in June. The Group are now planning more events for 2019, making the markets a regular feature on the Saints. The preparations for Christmas start early for retailers. The seasonal stock has been arriving for some weeks, and products are already on the shelves. Our restaurants have published their seasonal menus and bookings are now in full swing, so don’t delay! This year we are encouraging all our businesses to really go to town on their front windows, to put on a fabulous show and really make the Saints a great Christmas destination. • WATERFRONT LIFE

HEALTH& BEAUTY FEELING UNFIT & GAINING WEIGHT? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO... The most common reasons for feeling unfit and gaining a few pounds are; • • •

It’s my age My back hurts I don’t know what I’m doing

To combat all of these, I’m going to give you a few simple tips which will help you whether you’re; • • •

Male or female 18 or 80 A gym buff or a couch potato

All of these will help you improve quality of life now and for years to come, not to mention you’ll look pretty good too!

1. EAT RIGHT (80% OF THE TIME) Why not 100%, you ask? The answer lies with the realistic chance of success. If you were to go on a “diet” then you would probably fail at some point. If you allow some flexibility, then you will not only stick to the plan, but you will also reclaim some sanity from the endless diet pills and every other placebo out there.

37 • N OV OVEE M BE B E R 2018 • WATERFRONT LIFE

2. LIFT SOME WEIGHTS Now, I don’t mean start throwing a bar overhead: I mean simply move some weights around. Don’t feel as though you need to join a gym: many of my 1-1 clients don’t even have a gym membership! All you need is your body, a few household pieces and some imagination.

3. DO SOME CARDIO You don’t need to go crazy and run a marathon - just get walking and move more. This is often overlooked; people have become a little obsessed with getting “abs”, yet they forget that the key to their health and indeed those “abs”, is their heart.

4. BE CONSISTENT… & ENJOY IT! I have seen many PTs use the approach of lifting excessive weight and training very, very hard every single day. The truth is for most of us, this will only last so long. Do something you enjoy and you will look forward to exercising regularly. Look at anyone who is past the age of 40 who is in great shape - more often than not, they don’t train throwing weights around or screaming as they lift some dumbbells! They may lift weights once or twice a week, but they’ll swim, run, walk or dance, and they’ll stay CONSISTENT because they enjoy it. SELF TANNERS

Winter nights. Cold air. Thick jumpers. And…pale skin. If you’re more ‘sunworshipper’ than ‘snow-lover’ and love a year-round glow, faking it is the way forward. Once seen as a high-maintenance task, leaving you stinking of biscuits and staining the bed sheets, fake tanning has been made easier thanks to an array of application techniques, formulas and speedy drying times. We reviewed some of the most popular brands on the market to decide which one will be seeing us through to 2019! *prices correct at time of writing ST MORIZ TANNING MIST IN DARK RRP £2.99 FOR 150ML Don’t be put off by ‘dark’; if you’re still harbouring your sunkissed summer look, this tan gives a gorgeous glow with an easy spray application. But for the more English-rose types… it also comes in a ‘medium’ shade. Dries within 15 minutes with minimal transfer, but does leave you smelling a bit cakey. 3/5

PS BRONZE RADIANT GLOW MOUSSE RRP £3.50 FOR 150ML Primark have come up trumps with a range that is toppling even some of the biggest names in beauty! This mousse has become a sell-out on numerous occasions, and with a pump-bottle design, amazing coverage and low odour, we can understand why. Comes in 3 shades. 4/5

AMBRE SOLAIRE NO STREAKS BRONZER SELF TAN MIST RRP £11.49 FOR 150ML This product – which also comes in 3 shades – has been on the market for many years in various forms and remains a firm favourite in the UK; thanks to its pleasant smell, multi-angle nozzle, and no-need-to-rubin formula. The ultra-fine mist means you also get more coverage for less spray, so worth it in the long run. 4.5/5

SKINNY TAN 7-DAY TANNER RRP £19.99 FOR 125ML The most expensive tan we tested...but sadly, it didn’t seem worth the pennies. Using natural oils, it does apply well to the skin and doesn’t cling to dry patches like some tans can, but the colour all but disappears within a few days - not the promised seven. Smells good and the gel formula is pleasantly cooling, but overall: not worth the hype. 2/5

If you have ever been to some sort of kids’ adventure play, you will know that they are not the prettiest from the outside; basically a unit in an industrial estate! Let’s face it, there is plenty more room in those than a normal commercial space, and for something like this, space is definitely crucial. So, from the outside it’s just a standard unit with their signage. Plenty of parking outside which is ideal: nothing worse than turning up with your kids and not being able to park. SCORE 4/5 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

As a mum of a 3 year old and a 2 year old somewhere like this is ideal: a chance for them to let off all that energy, rather than them destroying my house! As we first walked in the place was busy, with it being half term, everyone else had the same idea

as me! This was great for my kids: more friends for them! Plenty of things for the kids to do and keep them entertained. Very spacious and very colourful. You could see there were 3 different sections - babies, toddlers and children above 4, which is easy enough to figure out. Being somewhere for kids, you like to think the place is secure, and no children are able to enter or exit alone, which is a nice little bonus from the worries you can tick off your list while venturing out with your kids. Nice to see that there was a café too, the adults are able to get their coffee fix! SCORE 5/5 SERVICE

We first arrived to be greeted by a lovely gentleman who was talking away to my kids. He told me the prices of entry which I

I am unsure, but it was a nice little touch. It was lovely to see the staff get so involved with the kids, dancing, playing, and just being silly with them. SCORE 5/5 FOOD

Now, anyone with kids will know there comes a time when they start moaning about being hungry, and you just have to accept that you’re going to be eating out. It was lovely to see there was a bit of variety for everyone, especially if you have fussy kids. From a lunchtime box for the children which includes a sandwich, crisps or fruit, chocolate bar and a drink - to a cooked meal, there is something to please all. SCORE 4/5 VALUE

The value of Partyman World of Play is average. It cost me £15 for both me and my two kids to enter, and then another £20 for us to eat with drinks. But saying that, it was worth it; we spent a good few hours here. SCORE 4/5

then proceeded to pay. I enquired with the gentleman at the front desk about birthday parties; he was very helpful and told me all the information I needed with regards to prices, the amount of children you can have and that the price also includes food, and he even presented my kids with a balloon! Throughout our stay, the kids were very excited to hear music going on towards the little stage they have on the other side of the venue. They had a dancing competition going on, so everyone got involved - unfortunately for parents it was that dreaded shark song! But the kids enjoyed it so that’s all that matters, and they even handed out prizes at the end which was lovely of them to do! There was also a face painting station, which was a definite hit with the kids - whether this was just a half term activity or all year round

Overall it was a good day out with the kiddies: they were absolutely exhausted by the time we left. I was very happy with the entertainment within the venue. I have tried other similar places before, however I found my 2 year old struggled to get about without help, he in particular loved it here because it gave him more freedom and he was able to follow his brother everywhere.

BROKE OF THE SHANNON WRITTEN BY ANDY PARKER

In the east of Ipswich today there is a housing estate named after one of Britain’s naval heroes. A pub only 3 miles from the estate in the village of Bucklesham is named after the 38-gun frigate he commanded in 1813 during his most famous naval action. The man is Sir Philip Broke, the estate Broke Hall and the pub, the Shannon Inn. It was during the War of 1812 between Great Britain and America, that Broke, and his crew on HMS Shannon fought and boarded the larger frigate USS Chesapeake off the coast of Canada. Snatching victory from the hands of the Americans, his triumph raised the morale of the nation following three successive defeats against US Naval frigates in single-ship duels. He acquired the nickname Broke of the Shannon for his bravery, yet he was forced to retire due to a cutlass injury to the head he obtained during the battle. It was as he boarded the Chesapeake leading a boarding party that he was attacked by three sailors, armed with a pike, cutlass and a musket being used as a club. He parried the pike, yet as he did he received a cutlass stroke to his head resulting in a deep cut, followed by blows from the musket. He lost consciousness but was luckily saved by the surgeon on HMS Shannon attending his wounds.

IMAGE CREDIT : NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM

His counterpart on Chesapeake, Captain Lawrence, wasn’t as lucky and suffered two severe injuries, one of which proved to be fatal. Broke’s crew took the USS Chesapeake during the action and both vessels sailed to Halifax in Canada to be welcomed by a jubilant crowd. This engagement was one of the bloodiest naval duels during the Age of Sail and it was down to Broke’s skill, leadership and determination that the Shannon and its crew won. In 2013 the IMT celebrated him and his life at an international symposium at the University of Suffolk on the bicentennial of his victory. Ipswich has always been the home of seafarers, explorers, traders, as well as many members of the Merchant and Royal Navy, including the likes of Rear Admiral Broke and Admiral Vernon.

WORLD VEGAN MONTH You’re unlikely to visit any restaurant or food vendor these days without spotting the term ‘vegan’. But what was once seen as an unusual lifestyle choice has rapidly increased; with an estimated 3.5 million vegans in the UK – almost a 650% rise from 2016. Far from just being a ‘lifestyle choice’, veganism has grown in popularity thanks to documentaries such as What The Health and Cowspiracy; investigating the less palatable side of consuming meat and dairy products.

These shocking revelations work alongside the growing rebuff of the leather and fur industries, and with millions of consumers now choosing to boycott brands that test on animals. November has welcomed the celebration of veganism since 1944, and The Vegan Society actively encourages non-vegans to spend the 30 days living as a vegan, to highlight the benefits and accessibility to all consumers. You can find out more about how to get involved at www.vegansociety.com

MEATLESS MONDAYS There are so many products on the market that you can easily substitute for some of your usual ingredients, such as mince, chicken and sausages, to make them vegan. Try easing into veganism by having a ‘meatless Monday’ every week, and indulging in an animal-free dinner with the family. INSTEAD OF BEEF MINCE CHILLI

TRY BEAN CHILLI

Beans provide a protein boost and have the perfect texture for a classic chilli. INSTEAD OF A HAMBURGER

TRY A VEGGIE BURGER

Try beetroot, mushroom or aubergine for the meatiest resemblance! INSTEAD OF CHICKEN STIR FRY

TRY TOFU STIR FRY

Turn your nose up at tofu? A tasteless food alone; when flavoured and cooked right, it can replace chicken in almost any recipe with ease! INSTEAD OF PORK BACON

TRY AUBERGINE BACON

Yes, sounds weird. But a surprisingly delicious alternative for the classic British sandwich!

INSTEAD OF ICE CREAM

TRY COCONUT ICE CREAM

There are plenty of vegan ice creams available on the market these days, but try making your own using frozen bananas and coconut milk.

MILK

d d ie te tr tes d an

DAIRY-FREE

More and more of the population are favouring plant-based drinks over cow’s milk, and it’s easy to see why. Not only is it suitable for those unable to digest lactose or with milk allergies, but cows are often administered with harmful antibiotics to keep their milk ‘pure’; leading to our bodies naturally building up a resistance to the exact medicine that could cure an illness down the line! Cow’s milk has also been linked to increased chance of prostate and ovarian cancer, as well as weight gain and high levels of saturated fat and cholesterol. Give your health a helping hand and try one of these WL-approved alternatives. And the best bit: most dairy-free drinks are long-life, so you’ll save yourself the task of ‘sniff it and see’!

OATLY ORGANIC OAT DRINK RRP £1.50 FOR 1L. The Swedish-born brand offers a heartier alternative to some plantbased drinks; oat milk is slightly thicker, meaning it goes well in hot drinks, cooking and – you guessed it – a warming porridge breakfast. Tastes very oaty, so may be a little off-putting when drunk on its own. SCORE 4/5

BLUE DIAMOND ALMOND BREEZE RRP £1.20 FOR 1L One of the best options for those counting calories – a 100ml serving of the unsweetened version contains just 13 calories, compared to 35 in skimmed milk. Also has a less overpowering taste than some others. Creamier in consistency than coconut milk. SCORE 4/5

RUDE HEALTH CASHEW DRINK ORGANIC RRP £3.00 FOR 1L Yes, it’s more expensive than the others, but it’s by far the most milky, non-milk you can get! Creamy, delicious and almost identical to the texture of cow’s milk; this is a fantastic all-rounder. Plus, it’s organic - so even more reason to feel good about drinking it. SCORE 5/5

ALPRO COCONUT ORIGINAL RRP £1.80 FOR 1L A refreshing, light drink with a similar texture to skimmed milk. Ideal for eating with cereal or as a drink. Distinct coconut taste which may be an acquired one! This is a great low-calorie option for anyone testing the water. SCORE 3.5/5

ALL ABOUT…

SUFFOLK RECORD OFFICE and THE HOLD WRITTEN BY BRIDGET HANLEY & AMY RUSHTON

SUFFOLK REMEMBERS November sees the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. This month we’re looking at how the inhabitants of Suffolk observed the conclusion of ‘the war to end all wars’. It had been a total conflict, affecting those on the Home Front as well as the combatants, leaving the country exhausted by the war effort and broken by grief for the loss of those who would not return. Although the Armistice marked the end of the fighting on 11th November 1918, the Peace treaty was not signed until 28th June 1919. The British government had planned a four-day Peace celebration for August 1919. However, the events were brought forward and scaled down to a one-day event

Competition to design memorial in Christchurch Park (HD397/1)

on 19th July 1919. The first Armistice Day was held on 11th November 1919. It was to be a commemoration of the end of hostilities the previous year and an opportunity to remember those who had not returned. In Ipswich, taxi driver Olive Turney recalled in her diary on 12th November 1918: “Tremendous rejoicings in London, & everywhere. The King & Queen had a tremendous reception. Thanksgiving services in St. Paul’s. Began work again here, but the works closed again until Thursday morning. Church bells & clocks striking again at night.”

Most towns and villages have a War Memorial commemorating those men and women who gave their lives during this conflict. Suffolk honoured those who served and died in a variety of ways including the erection of war memorials, village halls, tablets, windows etc. The county had two ‘thankful villages’ - settlements in England and Wales from which all their members of the armed forces survived World War I – Culpho and South Elmham St Michael. The latter is doubly thankful in that they also lost no service personnel during World War II. Ipswich Record Office holds some papers relating to the competition for the design of the memorial in Christchurch Park to commemorate those from the County Borough of Ipswich who died. The county of Suffolk recorded the names of the fallen from the county outside the Borough, over 10,600 in the Suffolk Roll Suffolk Roll of Honour (A2/1/4/2/2)

of Honour which is on display in Suffolk County Council’s Endeavour House. We have recently digitised the roll and the digital images, searchable by name, will be available to view online at www.suffolkarchives.co.uk. Following a public subscription appeal the memorial to the fallen from the Administrative County of East Suffolk was the building of a new wing attached to the East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital in Anglesea Road, Ipswich. The building opened on 28 July 1924. There is a small display of items relating to peace celebrations across the county, including the papers about the Ipswich War Memorial at the Ipswich branch of the Suffolk Record Office throughout November and December. Suffolk Record Office would like to collect photographs, programmes and other papers that illustrate Suffolk’s commemorations of the end of the First World War in November 2018. If the items are in digital format they can be emailed to suffolk.remembers@ suffolk.gov.uk. Hard copies can be sent or brought in to any of the three Record Office branches.

Spread The Word Not Flu, This Winter! It can be all too easy to put off having the flu vaccination due to other commitments. However, flu is a nasty illness that can leave its sufferers out of action for some time and can even cause death. Flu is caused by a virus that infects the windpipe and lungs. As it is a virus and not bacteria, antibiotics won’t treat it. Flu is passed from person to person by droplets when someone with the infection sneezes or coughs. You can also catch it by touching a surface where the virus has been deposited. The best way of avoiding flu is by having the vaccination, but it helps to practise good hygiene such as covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using disposable tissues and disposing of them and regularly washing your hands.

This year the following are eligible for a free flu vaccination; all those aged between two and three on 31 August 2018 all children in reception class and school years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5; people aged six months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups; all pregnant women (including those who become pregnant during Influenza season); people aged 65 years and over (including those 65 years by 31 March 2019); people living in long-stay residential care homes or other long-stay care facilities; those who are in receipt of a carer’s allowance or who are the main carer of an older or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill.

Each year the NHS offers a flu vaccination free to those at particular risk to help protect from flu and its complications. If you do not fall into one of the eligible categories, you can still get a flu vaccination for a small fee at most pharmacies in Suffolk.

READ ALL ABOUT IT WRITTEN BY REV. TOM ROUT

At my ordination service, the Bishop of Leicester asked a number of searching questions. One of them was ‘Will you be diligent in prayer, in reading Holy Scripture, and in all studies that will deepen your faith and fit you to bear witness to the truth of the gospel?’ In other words, ‘will you read good books that help you get a better grasp on the gospel message?’ It’s recognition that what we read is important, and it was the church’s way of urging clergy to study; to read, and through reading, to engage with the thoughts and ideas of others. Of course, I gave the required answer: ‘With the help of God, I will.’

Other books show how faith has sometimes flourished in the trials of wartime. One such book is War and Grace by Don Stephens. It tells the stories of 13 people (some very high-ranking officers) whose lives were profoundly influenced by God during the First and Second World Wars. It’s a title I’d highly recommend for anyone who wants something appropriate for this month of Remembrance; as we commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.

But time for a confession. I don’t find reading easy. I can string the words together ok, but I find it hard to make and guard the time to read. In a busy life, reading is often the first thing to go... the last thing I get round to. The books I find easiest to read usually have a historical angle. I’m just finishing Anna Reid’s book Leningrad. It’s not a religious book, but it has widened my perspective on the ideologies human beings have embraced, and what those ideologies (of Nazism and Communism) led to, in this case for the suffering civilians of Leningrad (now St Petersburg).

Finally, there’s Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor and theologian, whose writings (translated into English!) have been an inspiration in shaping my own thoughts about spirituality. Bonhoeffer wrote about the true nature of Christian faith and belief at a time when the Nazis were intimidating and silencing the critics of Hitler’s fascist ideology. For his beliefs, Bonhoeffer ultimately paid with his life. Anyone curious to find out more about Bonhoeffer might begin with a biography written by Eric Metaxas titled Bonhoeffer - Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy.
