HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR WATERFRONT

Editor’s WORD

We are officially 2 years old this month! Our very first (24 page) magazine was published and delivered in December 2016 and we have come quite a way since then! Being not-for-profit and with an unpaid editorial team, the last 2 years have been a definite challenge. However, I am the type of person who has never shied away from a challenge and I sincerely hope that the resulting publication shows what can be done with dedication and passion. This is not to mention the desire to bring together the residents, businesses and public sector organisations that make the Waterfront what it is.

On that note, your new editor will be introduced to you next month! All to be revealed...

CONTACT US 01473 35 35 12 info@waterfrontlife.co www.waterfrontlife.co

I have been told on many occasions that what we do with Waterfront Life is “unique”. I’m not sure about that accolade, but I do know that we do what we do with a genuine desire to communicate all that is good about our area. So please enjoy our birthday issue and cheers to the next 2 years and beyond.

My very best wishes. Richard Stewart

BEHIND THE SCENES

THE VIEW FROM THE

SALTHOUSE WRITTEN BY LOUISE SHADBOLT

As part of our ongoing relationship with the Salthouse Harbour Hotel, I was delighted to meet up with 27 year-old Ryan Grimwood recently, the Hotel’s Eaterie’s sous chef... Ryan started his culinary journey in the kitchen of a Hungry Horse pub in Claydon at the age of 16. With the pub’s head chef noticing Ryan “dodging sixth form every now and then”, he decided to teach Ryan the basics of how to cook; the simple things such as soups and meat and a career in catering went from there. Ryan fell in love with cooking and hasn’t stopped since; enjoying learning new tricks of the trade…..as Ryan says “it’s like being a sponge, soaking up all of the information and advice everyone gives you and it goes into your book of knowledge” The young cook then applied to become breakfast chef at the Salthouse and received the call that everyone wants after their interview; the job was offered! Since then Ryan has worked his way up to sous chef, also experiencing the head chef role for a short

while. This allowed him to put together this year’s Christmas menu for the Salthouse, which was in the making way back in May. With the Hotel fully booked on the big day, the atmosphere is sure to be warm and hearty festive food is sure to be on the menu. As winter is Ryan’s self-professed favourite season, it didn’t take long for him to decide on his perfect menu, allowing him to show off his skills. Ryan admitted during our chat to being allergic to many things, so as a chef this can be quite challenging - but it doesn’t stop him; Ryan is constantly finding new ways to cook and using ingredients to replace what he is allergic too. “Every day is a school day and a constant learning curve for me” says Ryan. With the festive season fast approaching, I asked Ryan what his favourite festive food is, “has to be the traditional turkey dinner, all the trimmings with a treacle tart for afters!”. He has made sure these have both featured on to the menu this year. Unlike many of us, Ryan has to carry on as normal during the break, which means working on Christmas Day. However, the Salthouse “always has that family feel, with people constantly looking out for each other and Christmas is no different, everyone tries to make the day special for all those who are involved” says Ryan. We’ll drink to that.

Christmas On

the

Saints WRITTEN BY CATHY FROST

The preparations for Christmas are now in full swing on the Saints: the lights are up, windows are dressed, and the excitement is mounting. The Saints always look great this time of year, we are blessed with some beautiful old buildings. The Christmas TV adverts are now being aired; it was great to see Visa celebrating small business and the local high street. We can’t promise singing shop owners, but we can give a warm welcome! Please share on social media your ‘shop local’ stories and purchases using #keepitlocal and #thesaintsipswich. It’s great to get feedback from our visitors.

shop, fabulous fashions for men and women, and a varied array of gifts and homeware for every budget. Why not check out our beauty and hair salons: treat someone you love to a massage or facial this Christmas. How about gifting a new craft or skill: learn to knit at Jenny Wren’s Yarn, learn to sew at Crafty Baba, or learn to play an instrument at Rocket Music. The beauty of shopping local is tapping into the passion and knowledge of the small business owner. Stuck for an idea, or find gift buying difficult? Let us help! At Loveone, they offer a gift-wrapping service, so you don’t even have to hunt for the Sellotape! Don’t forget to check out the menus of all our restaurants for your festive meals, if you haven’t already booked! We are only a 10-minute walk from the town centre, the Waterfront and the Station, so easily accessible. The Saints look forward to welcoming you over the Festive Season. We wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas. www.thesaintsipswich.com

There have been a couple of new additions to the street in recent months, we have welcomed Emma’s Florist - the shop is looking very seasonal. Jackie’s Deli has opened [corner of St Peter’s Street and Rose Lane], offering great breakfasts and lunch to keep you going while Christmas shopping. From Warship to Waterfront Mariners “1900” is a historic landmark along the Waterfront, and with the abundance of history on board the much-loved vessel, it would be rude not to educate you about its past, present and future. The vessel was built in 1899 by Acieries de Bruges and was initially used as a gunboat in Belgium. It was then commissioned to serve for the Belgian Military in both World Wars. It was sunk by the Germans in the Second World War, before being raised and repaired as a German warship for four years and subsequently given back to the Belgian authorities. Despite having (quite literally) been through the wars, that isn’t even the end of the road for the 1900. After the War, it became a Red Cross hospital and remained as such for a number of years under a new name - Florence Nightingale, from which you can imagine it saw many fatalities and holds a great deal of history! In the early 70s, it transformed into a party boat, formally known as a ‘gentleman’s club’ which operated for 18 years. In November 1990, the boat was handed over to Contship Ltd and crossed to Harwich, before mooring in Ipswich Docks. Residents of the area will remember its brief stint as Italian restaurant Il Punto which lasted only a year. The boat then turned its hand to French cuisine, and remains under this offering today.

Onboard the boat, all the original documents (which includes transcripts of the vessel’s journeys) and original photographs can be found, and - once the vessel has completed its transformation – the plan is to display the history of the boat for all to enjoy. It’s not very often you get to come across all of the original history and artefacts of such a unique place: hoarding can be a good thing! In further news, the original searchlight, radar and horn are being refitted ‘as we speak’.

Eat well, in or out — Dockside Deli opens its doors on the Ipswich Waterfront Walk down to the waterfront in Ipswich from 26 November and you’ll be in for a treat. Dockside Deli is the latest tasty secret from Isaacs on the Quay, situated on the ground floor, next to the Isaacs griddle area, and 8 • 8DE •CELEMI SUR BE R E2018 • WATERFRONT • WATERFRONT LIFE LIFE

“Tucked next to Isaacs on the Quay, Dockside Deli is a trove of high quality, light bite options for people to eat well, in or out.” offering an array of high quality, fast food options. Of course, you don’t have to be a customer at Isaacs to enjoy the menu at Dockside Deli. With doors opening directly out onto the waterfront, as well as some heading into Isaacs itself, the Deli offers options to eat in at the breakfast bar, to eat in at Isaacs or to take away to enjoy as a picnic along the quayside or at home.

Your breakfast or lunch – freshly made to order With fresh ingredients all on site and ready to prepare, you can request your own taste in sandwiches – on white, wholemeal or granary bread, or a roll or baguette. A great place to eat well

Menu choices are marked up onto the digital displays within the Deli, so it’s easy to make your menu choice and you can, of course, build your own

The option to take your food next door to Isaacs to enjoy with a drink from the bar is also welcomed by many customers. A great place to socialise while looking out at the everyday bustle on the Marina, the architecture at Isaacs on the Quay also offers a great deal of interest,

with many reminders of the site’s industrial and trading past on show in the Grade I and II* listed buildings. Talking about Dockside Deli’s launch, Bentleys Restaurants General Manager, Alex Tiunovs commented “The Dockside Deli is a really exciting extension to the Isaacs offering, allowing us to offer more choice to our own customers, while opening up wider dining opportunities to passers-by. We’ll be open to cater for breakfast through to late lunch, giving people a convenient stop-off while they’re on their way to work, too. We’re looking forward to welcoming you there.” The Dockside Deli is open from 7am until 3pm on a Monday to Friday and it’s closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

MYSTERY SHOP REPORT

“it’s such a special gift to be able to create something genius – which is what this lady did for me” VENUE: CAKE SUPREME, TACKET STREET TIME: WEEKDAY MORNING

There is nothing better than walking into a cake shop and instantly getting hit with the incredible smell of sugar and celebration. Our Mystery Shopper visited Cake Supreme in the hope that they could save the day and make her something amazing for her son’s birthday - as per usual, she had left it to the last minute (like most of us do) ...or is that just her?! LOCATION

The location of Cake Supreme is perfect: on a main road heading straight into the town centre, people have to walk straight past it if they are heading that way. Parking is available, as there is a car park right over the road from the shop - which is easily accessible - or a few side streets which have parking spaces. I am aware that Cake Supreme is mainly a wedding cake shop, which fits perfectly for the location it is in; with a wedding shop, salons and flower shops nearby. 4/5

SERVICE

When I first arrived, I was greeted by a lovely lady who asked how she could help. I was somewhat vague with my request: I went in asking for a cake for a 4-year-old who loves super heroes (especially the Hulk!). Through a process of elimination, we narrowed it down to something my son would hopefully enjoy! We went through how many people the cake needed to feed, which gave her a rough idea how big it needed to be. I trusted her judgement to make something incredible that would please a 4-year-old. I gave her only a week’s notice in order to produce this cake. When I went to pick it up, it also had cupcakes with it and the main cake was quite big, so she helped me to my car. Overall 5/5 FOOD

The cake itself was delicious, everyone was very pleased with it and the kids certainly enjoyed choosing their favourite super heroes on the cupcakes. I couldn’t decide at first what

10 •10DE •CELEMI SUR BE R E2018 • WATERFRONT • WATERFRONT LIFE LIFE

flavour I wanted, so was slightly greedy and went for vanilla cupcakes and decided on chocolate for the main cake. There was more than enough to feed the amount of people I originally said, with loads more to spare. Overall 5/5 PRICE

I have always found that cakes can be quite expensive, however Cake Supreme works around your budget. In my case I always find myself going in with a rough budget and then liking the ideas too much and my budget then starts to increase, so I’ve only got myself to blame! The cake altogether cost me £68 and if you see the finished product; in my opinion, it was totally worth it! Overall 4/5

Overall, Cake Supreme did a fantastic job. It’s such a special gift to be able to create something genius – which is what this lady did for me, especially in a small time period like I gave her, so I would like to thank her for that. She had a few orders already, so to be able to fit me in gave her customer skills top marks! I would highly recommend Cake Supreme to anyone. One thing that will always be around is cake makers; everyone loves a personalised cake and will normally pay a respectable amount to have one.

Flowers are always so pretty to look at, but do we pay much attention to the actual care of them? And where do they come from - do we assume they magically appear in the shop? Emma explains all… The flowers Emma sources into the shop come from Holland, and the time between when they are cut and then delivered to Emma’s Florist is 24 hours, so it is a quick turnaround. When they are delivered, they will stay in the shop for a day to allow them to drink up plenty of water and make sure they are looking fresh and delightful, before going out to your homes for everyone to admire! It is really important to cut flower stems on the slant, as it allows them to soak up the water effectively. Flowers also need to be displayed in a deep vase to allow them to drink as much as they can! This is when you add the flower food; many of us assume flower food isn’t really a necessity however it isn’t just water that flowers rely on. Flower food mostly contains sugar, acid and bleach (believe it or not!). The sugar supplies nutrients to the flowers, acid maintains the

pH level and bleach reduces the levels of bacteria in the water. With the festive period fast approaching, why not add a personal floral touch to your Christmas table with a Christmas Table Centre Workshop, held on 17th December at Inspire Suffolk. You will enjoy an evening full of festive fun; making your very own fresh flower centrepiece, guided by one of Emma’s team. Originally £45, this course is on special offer for Waterfront Life readers at £35 - and all proceeds will go to Inspire Suffolk. You still have time to order your bespoke items from Emma’s Florist - add a touch of style and elegance to your perfect Christmas gift for a loved one, a friend or even your secret Santa recipient! Emma’s Florist still has two workshops available for you to go and put your creativity to the test and make your bespoke wreath, with a variety of items available such as pine cones, oranges, berries, little flowers and finished off with a beautiful ribbon. But be quick: the two that are available are on 7th and 12th December. WWW.EMMASFLORIST.COM 306 NACTON ROAD 01473 272747 13 ST PETER’S STREET 01473 218799

BENEFITS OF RUNNING: There are plenty of benefits from getting into running. For starters, it's an easy way of improving your physical health. Running requires little equipment, but a good pair of running shoes that suit your foot type may go that extra mile to keep you comfortable. Running regularly will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight, especially when combined with a healthy diet. There's evidence that it may help to increase bone density in some people, which can help protect against bone diseases like osteoporosis. Running regularly can also be good for our mental health. It can be a great stress reliever and has even been shown to combat depression. Taking on challenges such as Couch to 5K could help to boost your confidence and selfbelief, as you prove to yourself that you can set yourself a target and achieve a goal.

COUCH TO 5K: Taking up running can seem like a scary prospect, especially if you feel out of shape or unfit. NHS Couch to 5K will help you gradually work up towards running 5K in just 9 weeks.

Couch to 5K is a running plan for absolute beginners. It was developed by a new runner, Josh Clark, who wanted to help his 50-something mum get off the couch and start running, too. The plan involves 3 runs a week, with a day of rest in between, and a different schedule for each of the 9 weeks. Probably the biggest challenge a new runner faces is not knowing how or where to start. Often when trying to get into exercise, we can overdo it, feel defeated and give up when we're just getting started. Couch to 5K works because it starts with a mix of running and walking to gradually build up your fitness and stamina. Week 1 involves running for just a minute at a time, creating realistic expectations and making the challenge feel achievable right from the start. Couch to 5K is for everyone. Whether you've never run before or if you just want to get more active, Couch to 5K is a free and easy way of getting fitter and healthier. If you have any health concerns about beginning an exercise regime like Couch to 5K, make an appointment to see your GP and discuss it with them first.

#WFLVIEWS

OH, CHRISTMAS TREE...

We’re very excited to introduce #WFLVIEWS to the magazine: your run-down of views from the Waterfront, whether that be physically (our riverside-prominent partners at the Hold, Ashtons and Nicholas Estates and many more, share their news and expertise), community news and thoughts of the month from our resident contributors Rev Tom Rout, Councillor Liz Harsant and others, and of course our regular news features to keep you updated with the goings-on in the area. We’re always keen to feature reader-submitted content, so if you have any #WFLVIEWS please email to media@waterfrontlife.co. And don’t forget our monthly cover photo competition, where you could see your own image featured on the front of 10,000 magazines (and our Facebook profile pic) next month! Share and tag your Waterfront living and loving using #WFLVIEWS on socials.

Residents and visitors of the Waterfront gathered outside the University Waterfront building on 22nd December to welcome the arrival of Christmas, at the annual festive lights switch-on. Opting to avoid the crowds of thousands in the town centre, a small crowd enjoyed the uplifting vocals of Pop Chorus – a 40-strong local choir – with a selection of popular Christmas carols and songs, in the lead up to the switch-on. The anticipation gathered as the 6:45pm deadline came and went, but – four minutes after scheduled – the steel baubles lit up the sky as the tree came to life, to cheers of admiration from onlookers. Children gathered for photographs, while adults opted for selfies, and the true spirit of Christmas could be seen in the faces of all. We love the addition of the bauble tree to the Waterfront after its (very brief!) stint in the town centre, and look forward to seeing it remain a permanent feature for years to come.

QUIZZICAL

Following the festive lights switch-on, The Grazing Sheep was host to our very first Waterfront Quiz Night, which saw 30 local residents and businesses taking part in a Family Fortunes-style quiz (can you name 5 pop groups with the word 'boys' in the title? We struggled...), followed by the popular card game Higher or Lower, with some great prizes won including afternoon tea for two, a car valet worth £100 and Amazon vouchers. The night was a resounding success, raising £400 with all proceeds going to Student Life's mental health and anti-bullying schools projects. We are hoping to host these nights bi-monthly, so keep your eyes peeled on our social media pages for January's date. We look forward to seeing you there!

A VISION ROUND UP OF 2018 The Ipswich Vision project (now in its third year), has had a busy 2018, with all the partners continuing their commitment to drive regeneration and investment in the town. Let’s round up and celebrate some of the great projects we have seen this year…

The year kicked off with the start of the Cornhill regeneration project. A bold new vision for the centre of Ipswich. The Cornhill is now open, and all the project partners

are working together to bring the new space to life with an interesting and varied events programme. The aim is to create a place that all our visitors and residents will look forward to visiting and engaging with.

Following its £2m refurbishment, Ipswich Railway Station won ‘Best Large Station in the UK’ at the National Rail Awards.

Work started late this summer on The Hold, a new £20m Heritage centre for Suffolk. It will be situated next to the University of Suffolk on the Waterfront. It will be open in early 2020 and received a grant of £10.8m from the Heritage Lottery Fund this year. It will house the Suffolk Archives and records and will also have a café and lecture rooms.

BRINGING WORLD TIMBER PRODUCTS TO SUFFOLK WRITTEN BY LOUISE SHADBOLT

Anglo Norden was formed in 1966 by Claus Wedel: his aim; to develop a trading company which promoted the supply of high quality Scandinavian timber to the UK timber merchant sector. Starting life in Potters Gate, Norwich, the business soon expanded to Felixstowe, eventually out-growing the facility there, moving to its current location at Eagle Wharf in the Port of Ipswich, where the company operates a full timber terminal service. Anders Wedel took over from his father in the early 90s and has continued to develop and grow the business, adding Woodbank Timber to the Group in September 2011. Woodbank Timber is engaged in the supply of fencing products to the domestic, agricultural and equine markets. Promoting a range of high quality posts under the SurePine brand and a wide range of continental panels and garden furniture from the Baltics and Poland, those walking the waterfront will see mixed lorry

loads of construction and fencing products leave the Eagle Wharf terminal on a daily basis, destined for our customers right across the UK. Anglo Norden manages its own shipping department, under the careful watch and direction of Per Christianson, the company takes in fortnightly shipments of material from countries such as Russia, Scandinavia, Germany, Poland, Canada and the Baltics, guaranteeing its customers continuity and security of supply of its timber products every day. Residents along the Waterfront will see ships come and go, generally arriving on the early tide, Anglo Norden is always very mindful of its domestic and business neighbours when operating its business. It always take great care in notifying everyone in the port area when discharging vessels, this is performed as quietly, quickly and safely as is humanly possible. It is always the intention that the normal life of the waterfront has the minimal amount of disruption during business operating hours. Anglo Norden continues to grow, embracing change and promoting industry leading products, to a very loyal customer base. The team at Anglo Norden are very excited about what lies ahead and will do everything possible to ensure they continue to operate the business in harmony with “waterfront life”.

WHO KNEW!? QUAYS & WHARVES WRITTEN BY ANDY PARKER The historic waterfront of Ipswich has seen much redevelopment in the last 35 years, from the Mill, to the Winerack and University of Suffolk. It is important for future redevelopments to recognise the historic importance of the area, specifically the historic quay and wharf names, with the aim of reinstating them to their rightful locations, over new names that have no local significance. These names have a multitude of interesting stories associated with them. One of the earliest quaysides named was Bigod’s Quay. The Bigod family became the Earls of Norfolk and were important in protecting Ipswich and East Anglia during the Norman period, their large stone house in Key (Quay) Street marked their influence in the Town. Bigod Quay became Smart’s Wharf during the Elizabethan Period at a time when the Smart family were an influential trading family. Due to the constant development of the docks there is little left of the Medieval and Tudor maritime buildings on the waterfront. Both names also disappeared during redevelopment. This area now houses the

Mill, Wine-rack and the Ipswich Maritime Trust Window Museum and is currently called Albion Wharf. There is no clear reason for this name; quite possibly it was given during a period of patriotic fervour in the mid-late Victorian period, when the British Empire was celebrated. Many public houses, buildings and quaysides where the trades of the Empire flowed to and from were named in honour of the British Empire, taking such names as Victoria, Inkerman, Albion and Britannia. Next to Albion Wharf is the original crossing point of the river in Ipswich at Stoke Bridge; a structure which has been replaced several times, such as in 1818 when a flood destroyed the original bridge, and Ransomes provided a cast iron replacement. The area in front of the bridge became St Peter’s Dock and until the 1960s many vessels still unloaded cargoes at the quayside of St Peter’s Wharf to businesses such as Pauls Maltings. The addition of a flood wall in the 1960s unfortunately halted the use of this area but hopefully this will be redeveloped soon as a new entrance to the historic waterfront. www.ipswichmaritimetrust.org.uk

THE CHALLENGES OF CHRISTMAS & THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS WRITTEN BY TINA INNISS Considering the arrangements for Christmas is often a challenging time for separated families. Working out the time for children to spend time with each of their parents, as well as their wider family, can be the subject of a lot of dispute. Changing family units inevitably mean a change in routine and that applies very much in the festive period. After years of working with separated parents, I have seen how much of a struggle it can be for parents to come to terms with the idea that their children will wake up on Christmas Day away from them in this, traditional family period. The best advice I can give to parents is to think about what their children want and need. It is important for children to have regular time with both of their parents and the Christmas holidays are no exception. Many families alternate Christmas Day year on year, with children spending Christmas

Eve and Day with one of their parents and perhaps Boxing Day with the other parent. This gives children the opportunity to experience this magical time with both their parents and provides an easy structure for even young children to understand. However, in the modern day many parents may have new partners who themselves have children so Christmas might include exciting, or daunting, new children so it is best to forewarn the children to avoid any surprises. When thinking ahead to Christmas, what are your options if you and your ex cannot agree arrangements? Mediation can help you and your ex talk through issues in a supportive, non-confrontational environment. At Ashtons, we offer an initial meeting at no charge to anyone who wants to find out more about the mediation process. Tina Inniss is a member of the national body Resolution, and through them a trained mediator.

IT’S ALL HAPPENING IN HOLYWELLS WRITTEN BY LIZ HARSANT

I celebrated my birthday on the 11th of November with my daughter Samantha. Both born on the same day and the same time! I can always remember my Mother saying “let’s get these birthdays out of the way and then concentrate on Christmas” That gives us 6 weeks. It is a busy time of the year, not only because of the family celebrations, planning and shopping, but because of my involvement as a Councillor in local events. I have several churches in Holywells Ward and all like to hold a Christmas Fayre which I like to support as much as I can. Some of the charities I am involved in have their Christmas Dinners to celebrate the work and successes during the year and to be together in a less formal atmosphere. I have several of these events to attend and enjoy every single one of them. Meanwhile, the Friends of Holywells Park are holding their Christmas Fayre on 8th December which takes a lot of organising by the committee, and is more and more successful as the years go by. This Christmas Eve, the Margaret Catchpole Bowls Club, St Luke’s Church and one or two of us have been working on holding a Carol Service on the green at the front of the Bowls Club and this is now all but organized and hopefully will become an annual event. We have pupils from Cliff Lane Primary School coming to sing, the Ipswich Hospital Band and I am reliably informed by the North Pole that a certain Father Christmas is doing his best to call in. As a Rotarian, we hold a Christmas lunch for our members and their families and local

charities that we have helped come along to receive their cheques. But most importantly we help FIND (Families in Need) to pack parcels and then deliver to those who are not as fortunate as ourselves. It is very rewarding but also very disturbing that so many young families receive food parcels. It is a reminder as to how lucky we are and should never take life for granted. Let’s try and remember that this Christmas.

THE BUDGET WRITTEN BY SANDY MARTIN

The Government’s Budget this autumn was billed as the “end of Austerity”. Alas, it was nothing of the sort. For all the talk of “billions” of pounds, the extra money spent by the Chancellor is actually less than the rate of inflation. The personal tax allowance has gone up to £12,500 – which is a good thing for lowerpaid working people – and the threshold for higher-rate tax has gone up to £50,000. But it is those who earn over £50,000 per year who benefit most from both of these tax changes. Like Robin Hood in reverse, the Chancellor is rewarding the wealthiest people in our society with the bulk of the £4 billion tax-cuts, while reducing the amount available via Universal Credit for the worst off. The majority of Ipswich residents won’t notice any significant difference in their taxes. What you will notice is the effect of all the things that the Chancellor is NOT doing. While we are getting new trains, we are not getting all the rail infrastructure investment that would make those new trains run faster, or more reliably, or at all.

There was no additional funding to provide the North Ipswich Bypass or to improve the junctions on the A14 which is vital for the economy of Ipswich and Felixstowe and the whole UK. And while Suffolk will get full fibre connections to key public buildings, there’ll be no ultra-fast coverage for all, which is what we need if we are going to compete. Because council funding has been cut and cut again, there is no extra investment in local highways – instead of rebuilding inadequate roads, we get a pothole grant to fill in the gaps temporarily. And while Ipswich Borough Council will continue to build as many Council houses as it can, there will be no national fund to build the houses so desperately needed for our current and future young families. Ipswich stands on the brink of a renaissance. But that renaissance is at risk while capital investment in Britain continues to fall. I believe in Ipswich, but we would do a whole lot better if we had a government that believed in our country enough to invest in it.

‘TIS THE SEASON TO GET INVOLVED! WRITTEN BY TOM ROUT

It’s that time of year again, time to wish all our readers a very happy Christmas and God’s peace and blessing on you and your loved ones as one year closes and another begins. Of course, most of us will look forward to spending Christmas with family and closest

friends, but Christmas gives us all a great reason to join with festive activities and events in the wider local community. The Waterfront Churches extend all our readers a warm welcome to our Christmas services, which start on 16th December. There are services specially for children and families (like Festive Family Fun at Holy Trinity 10:30am on Sunday 16th December and Christingle at St Helen’s 4pm Sunday 23rd December) and there are services of a more traditional kind (Lessons and Carols at Holy Trinity 4pm Sunday 16th December and midnight communion at Holy Trinity 11:30pm on Christmas Eve) There’s even a brand new open air carol service at the Bowls Club opposite the Cliff Lane shops at 4:30pm on Christmas Eve, a real community collaboration, complete with brass band and Santa. Come along - it’s open air and open to all! But what about giving back at Christmas? At this time of year many people like to make a charitable donation, to help those less fortunate than ourselves. There are lots of worthwhile causes and charities Waterfront Life readers may have chosen to support. But if you still haven’t made up your mind, may I suggest two local charities helping people in Ipswich who’ve fallen on hard times? FIND (Families In Need), who provide emergency aid (food and household items) to people caught in the poverty trap. Details of how to give to FIND are available on their website: findipswich.org.uk/supportus or call 01473 833351. Then there’s Selig (Suffolk) Trust who run the Ipswich Winter Night Shelter, helping people currently homeless into sheltered accommodation and positive life choices. More details about the charity and how to donate are available on their website at www.selig.org.uk/donate

ALL ABOUT…

SUFFOLK RECORD OFFICE and THE HOLD WRITTEN BY AMY RUSHTON

EXPLORING CHRISTMAS IN THE COLLECTIONS It’s hard to believe that it’s that time of year again…but it’s inescapable: Christmas will soon be upon us! At the Record Office, it is a treat to be able to share items in the collections reflecting how people used to celebrate Christmas in years gone by. For example, we are all fond of this lovely little postcard of a snow-covered Christchurch Park, complete with ‘little donkey’ pulling a snow-plough. There’s also this evocative description of Christmas at St Mary Le Tower Church from a local newspaper in 1872 (though I’m sure many other churches and chapels might take issue with the writer’s criticism of their lack of ‘seasonable effort’!):

“The tuneful bells of St Mary Tower summoned the people to evening prayer on Christmas Eve, and a very fair congregation responded. A considerable proportion of them were evidently visitors – some, possibly, were dissenting heretics – seeing that they did not practise the ritual of the church. There was a procession into church, the choir singing nicely. Evening prayer was intoned, and there being no sermon no demand was made upon the hearer’s credulity. At the close of the service a number of carols were sung by the choir who, singing, left the church by the way and from they came in. A very profitable and pleasant hour and a quarter was spent. It is rather odd that at other churches and chapels no attempt is made to infuse life, attraction, and warmth into the services with good singing and a little extra seasonable effort on such occasions as that of which we are speaking. Later on in the night the fine peal of bells were heard to great advantage, and the stillness of early morn was broken by the ringers welcoming the day of days – Christmas.”

PUTTING ON THE GLITZ Let’s get the party started The most glamourous season of the year is nearly upon us. And this can only mean one thing – it’s time to dress up and be more fabulous than ever! Christmas party season is fast approaching. From sequins to ruffles, midis to maxis... it’s time to start thinking about your festive wardrobe. Our diaries will be filling up with festive invitations, from office parties, black tie balls, evening cocktails, dinner dates, nights out with friends, family get togethers... the list is endless! The shop rails have all the full collections in store, with everything

WRITTEN BY PAM DAVIS we will be wearing for the months to come. Ladies, this year it’s all about sequins - season staple piece perfect for the Christmas/New Year season.

Wearing Sequins 3 Ways BLING BUSINESS A dazzling pencil skirt works well with knits and tuxedo style jackets. SHINE AT WEEKENDS Introduce some wow into your weekend look with a sequin t-shirt - great with jeans, biker jackets and trainers. PARTY SPARKLE For certain occasions only all over sequins will do. Style sparkling dresses with sky-high heels.

The Modern Way To Master The Party Dressing

Chinos are great as they can be easily dressed up or down. Pair them with some trainers and a denim jacket for a relaxed vibe, or with a buttoned-up shirt to go more formal.

Asymmetric Hemlines, high-shine fabrics and Western-inspired heels are a sure hit If sequins are not your thing here are some other stylish alternatives: Wide-leg trousers teamed with a ruffled blouse Winter nights velvet, with killer heels and red lipstick Sharply tailored two-piece suits with minimal accessories work from office to party

We all love a leather jacket and think every man should own one. Wear your leather jacket over a thick warm jumper and some jeans or chinos to finish.

EMBELLISHMENTS Jumpsuits are party heroes; nipped-in waists and wide legs are flattering and add the right amount of glamour.

Alternatively, if you really want to stand out from the crowd then velvet should be your go-to.

• • • •

The key here is knowing just how to stand out in a sea of boring black tuxedos. If you want to wear a suit then make sure it’s not the one you wear to work. Instead, opt for a relaxed alternative in grey or seasonal hues like navy, boozy red and green that will grab just the right amount of attention.

ADD RETRO INTO STYLING 70’s – Jumpsuits plus glitter and textured cover ups 80’s – Power pieces, sequin minidresses and shoulder length earrings 90’s – Slip dresses, feathers and diamantes

HAIRStyle

There’s perhaps never been a better time to add a sequin dress to your party wardrobe.

For Men

I’ve been to barber shops where – no matter how many times you go in there – they have no products to put on at the end. It’s like going to get your car washed, and them not drying or waxing it to make it look pristine! Making sure the cut is right is one thing, but the other important part of the hair is the finish. You want your clients walking out of the salon knowing their hair – or face – looks its absolute best, and you can’t do that with the cut alone.

Whether it’s office drinks, a formal event, or something decidedly more chilled out, finding the right side of smart-casual is a well-honed skill. From the office bash to a big night out with friends, thinking about what to wear to a festive do can pose quite the dilemma, especially since parties can be all over the show when it comes to dress code.

most clients, rather than stocking just one particular brand. When it comes to male grooming, you can’t go wrong with American Crew, Ruzl, Uppercut (for beard balm), Fudge and Muk – an Aussie brand that I’ve used for many years. Obviously, different products will work differently for different hair types, so there isn’t a catch-all for every client. But as a general rule, spending a little more is always worthwhile: if they have good ingredients, they will be better for your hair and kinder on your scalp, they tend to last longer and will showcase your hair in the best possible way.

Some barbers will use cheap – or really expensive – products on their clients, for a decent profit, but it may not necessarily be a good quality or even suitable product for that client. You want your client to have a great style that they can replicate when they get home; they can’t do that if they don’t have the right tools for the job. I use some great products in my shop; I don’t scrimp on the quality and comfort I’m giving to my clients. I rarely sell these products directly though – you can buy them so much cheaper on Amazon, which is normally where I direct clients! People are amazed that I do this, but at the end of the day, I want my clients assured that I’m using an expensive product because I like using it, not because I want to sell it and make a profit. A particular brand I love is American Crew, which is what I mainly use in the salon, but I have a stock of certain products that I feel are essentials that I recommend to

Look Sharp in Winter Wear WRITTEN BY ANTONIO BELLINI Here we are on the run-up to Christmas: so very exciting with all the warm winter outfits and colourful decorations. There really isn’t a better time of year to make that special effort when going out with friends and relatives. So, when we are invited out for a wonderful Christmas lunch or dinner, we should at least make an effort to dress appropriately for the occasion. What do I mean by ‘appropriately’? Well, it would certainly be nice to arrive in a casual jacket; of course, you can wear a jumper over your shirt to keep warm, but it can be a little awkward when entering a lovely warm house or restaurant having to remove

your jumper over your head, whereas taking a jacket off is much easier! The main thing is to make our clothing look totally effortless; preferably an understated style, which can be so very simple, but one wrong move and it can all go wrong. For example, a patterned shirt with a patterned jacket is not a good look, but a patterned shirt with plain jacket looks amazing especially if there is a contrast in the colours. A light-coloured shirt and dark jacket, or a dark shirt with light jacket. It does seem obvious, but look around and you will see what I mean! Take pride in your appearance this Christmas: your friends will appreciate it and you will feel so much more comfortable. I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL IMAGE CREDIT : THE REGENT

THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL

@ THE REGENT WRITTEN BY AMANDA STRAVINI

SO EMOTIONAL! Amanda lives on the Waterfront with her partner Daniel and their two-yearold daughter Rose. A die-hard fan of the 80s, Amanda chewed our hands off at the chance to hit The Regent to see the incredible Belinda Davids in action as the Queen of Pop herself – Whitney Houston – in one of her final UK shows of 2018. I’ve grown up listening to the vocals of Whitney Houston, and was even lucky enough to see her on her last ever tour in 2010. So, when I saw that The Greatest Love of All – a worldwide tribute sensation – was coming to Ipswich, I couldn’t wait to relive one of the greatest nights of my life! Arriving at the Regent, the Box Office efficiently handed out tickets and we proceeded to settle down into our seats in the front stalls. My heavily pregnant friend – normally struggling to sit in any chair for an extended period without being uncomfortable – commented at how luxurious the seating was; and accompanied by the excellent view of the stage, we were really pleased. With tribute acts, the first worry that always springs to mind is: are they as good as the real thing? I purposely didn’t watch any

videos of Belinda prior to the show; so there was an element of surprise! But as soon as the opening notes of ‘Didn’t We Almost Have It All’ left Belinda’s mouth, I was transfixed. Not only did she ooze the charisma, beauty and elegance of Whitney; her voice was sensational. Moving through a set list of classics including ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’; which had everybody out of their seats, and ‘I Have Nothing’ (except chills down my spine and hairs standing on end!), Belinda’s engagement with the audience, seamless costume changes and impressive band solos and backing dancers had the entire audience waiting with bated breath for more. She even made her way through the aisles during 'Saving All My Love For You', much to the crowd's delight! Finishing her last song with cheers for an encore, we were all waiting for the same thing: the song concomitant with Whitney and one you couldn’t possibly watch a series of The X Factor without hearing (albeit, a badly-sung version). Returning to stage, Belinda did Whitney justice; absorbing herself into her rendition of ‘I Will Always Love You’, before emotionally thanking the crowd and leaving the stage to a welldeserved standing ovation.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – in fact, the festive season has been creeping up on us ever faster since the clocks went back... As you might expect, the Waterfront venues are geared up to celebrate with a feast of live music treats for all tastes. If you like your Yuletide sounds more traditional than trendy, Quay Place has a carol concert, (Wednesday 12th), while St Peter’s hosts seasonal musical events throughout the month. The lovely people at La Tour Cycle Café present a whole day of Christmas fun on the 22nd with music and a visit from Santa himself! Other live crackers this month include, fresh from a singing cardboard box in a major Christmas TV advert, the great voice of Ashton Jones and his Quintet (Steamboat, 8th), and Backwater Records supremo Steve Mann’s folk-rock outfit Exit 13 at the SB Victor (14th). No doubt Steve will also be backing Holly Johnston, who returns this month to launch her new album at St Peter’s (21st). The St Peter’s New Year Hootenanny closes 2018 in great style with (among others) Josh Locke crowning a record year with the Lockerbillies. A very merry Live Christmas! HEALTH& BEAUTY LOSING WEIGHT ...THE RIGHT WAY! In order for you to lose fat you need to expend more energy than you are consuming. There is no getting around this, it is a scientific fact! Now there are many meandering diet paths we can take to achieve fat loss but ultimately they all must lead to a calorie deficit. Our advice is to avoid extreme styles of dieting that are overly restrictive and are difficult to sustain.

energy to live your life, exercise and do all the things you love, but also ensuring that you are consuming less energy than you are expending. A few months of tracking your diet is a great way to monitor your intake and identify any hidden calories that may be the difference between weight loss and weight gain. Remember, what gets measured, gets managed.

Take your current diet, make small manageable changes that bring you into a deficit, measure your progress and test and adjust from there. Get to know your body and find that golden zone where you have enough

Are you aware of what you are eating? What is a “healthy” food? What even is “health”? – Health is a pretty broad term; one definition of health is “Ensuring consumption of sufficient nutrients, whilst supporting energy

balance across the overall diet”. Go into your cupboard or fridge and pick out 3 “healthy” foods and then 3 “unhealthy” foods. Let’s take the popular avocado and the Cadbury’s Curly Wurly. Now, looking at them objectively, the avocado is packed with nutrients such as Vitamin C, the Curly Wurly offers little in comparison. However, whilst the avocado

Now, this is not a criticism of an individual food or a promotion of another, but simply a call to appreciate the actual nutritional values of food. We are told that certain foods are “bad” or “unhealthy” and certain foods are “good” or “healthy”, instead we should see them for what they are. A calorie is a calorie. FOOD , C EL EB R ATE … TH IS M O N TH

CHRISTMAS It’s December, which means one thing… chocolate is an acceptable breakfast choice, pigs put on their crispy bacon blankets, and for the first (and last) time all year, Brussels sprouts are back on the menu (and probably left on the plate). There’s something about the festive season that makes food and drink the centrepiece of most homes; whether it’s Gran’s brandysoaked fruit cake, a ‘who can make the

crispiest roasties’ competition, or savouring an indulgent hot drink after coming in from the cold (FYI: The Grazing Sheep currently feature Christmas Pudding, Gingerbread and Pumpkin Spice syrups to add some Christmas spirit to your daily latte!). Join us in a celebration of all things merry this month, as we round up our favourite festive offerings – you might even discover something new for your dinner table this year!

a dash of salt,

AND A HANDFUL OF 2018

Everyone has their classic recipe that will be sure to appease even the fussiest of eaters on Christmas Day. But why not surprise your guests this year, and take inspiration from one of these modern twists on your roast dinner staples? GINGER & ORANGE GLAZED GAMMON Let’s face it – as traditional as turkey is, it can often be dry and boring. Swap the basic bird for a joint of gammon and smother it in a ginger and marmalade combo for a sweet, sticky glaze that will tickle tastebuds at the dinner table. ROASTED SPROUTS WITH PANCETTA AND CRANBERRY SAUCE Sack off the boring boiled Brussels and liven up the forgotten veg by roasting in olive oil, before adding pan-fried pancetta and a helping of cranberry sauce.

SOURDOUGH MUSHROOM STUFFING Step away from the boxed granules and whip up your own crowd-pleaser in less than 15 minutes. Sourdough breadcrumbs turn a usually heavy dish into a lighter option, and adding an assortment of mushrooms and wild herbs gives it a whole new level of fresh flavour. GINGERBREAD & PEAR TRIFLE Trifles are an essential part of a Boxing Day buffet table. Go against the norm and try a more festive flavour by swapping out ladyfingers for gingerbread Christmas trees, peaches for poached pear, add rum to your custard, and top with caramel-infused whipped cream.

Holiday Hacks

If your Christmas morning is synonymous for waking up at 5am just to put the oven on – we’re here to lend a hand! Check out these life hacks that will not only revamp your Christmas cooking, but save you bundles of time – leaving you to spend it on more important things (like cracking open that bottle of fizz!) DUST OFF THE SLOW COOKER Remember that Crock Pot you bought (and used once) back in 2015? Time to put it to good use. Save your oven space and let the worktop wonder bake your stuffing, pre-cook your meat joint (just stick it in the oven for the final 30 minutes to crisp up if necessary), or steam your Christmas pud. You can even use it to warm up and serve mulled wine, cider or hot chocolate as a welcome drink!

USE DISPOSABLE BAKING TINS If the thought of attacking the post-Christmas pile of washing up fills you with dread, give yourself a break and stock up on foil trays to cook your dinner in. Make sure you choose 100% recyclable ones to ensure your stress-saver is eco-friendly. Swap your glassware for disposable wine flutes for even less washing!

ASK GUESTS TO BRING A DISH Cooking the Christmas dinner is stressful enough, even for the most accomplished chef. Let your friends and family share the load by asking them to bring a dish each – whether it’s a simple bowl of peas, or a handcrafted cheesecake, it’s one less thing for you to worry about.

WARM YOUR PLATES IN THE DISHWASHER, NOT THE OVEN! Maximise your oven space by using it for just the food. Put your plates on a short rinse cycle, then simply remove and dry prior to serving the food (we suggest employing one of the kids or the other half for this task!). If you don’t have a dishwasher, sit them in a sink (or even bath) of hot water for 20 minutes for the same result. 4 3 • DE CE M BE R 2018 • WATERFRONT LIFE

Traditional Mulled Wine Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a glass or two of this warming tipple. For extra booziness, add sloe gin or brandy when reheating; or if you’re feeling creative, try adding some gingerbread syrup for added sweetness!

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

75cl bottle dry red wine

1. Put all ingredients in a large saucepan and gently heat for 10 minutes without boiling. 2. Allow to stand and infuse for a further 30 minutes prior to serving for maximum flavour. 3. When ready to serve, warm through on a low heat. 4. If using the slow cooker method, simply place all ingredients in the pot and sit on a low heat, ensuring the wine is warmed through before serving.

2 cinnamon sticks 1 orange (sliced) Peel of 1 lemon 3-4 star anise 1 tsp cloves Sugar to taste

Sausage & Stuffing Plait Got family heading over for a Boxing Day buffet? Make use of leftover stuffing with this quick and easy crowd-pleaser that can be prepared the night before (or Boxing Day morning if the brandies have got the better of you!).

INGREDIENTS 400g sausagemeat Leftover stuffing 1 ready-rolled packet of pastry (puff or shortcrust) 1 tbsp each of fresh thyme, rosemary and sage Salt and pepper 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 1 egg, beaten 1 tbsp mixed seeds for decoration (optional)

METHOD 1. Place sausagemeat, herbs, seasoning and garlic into a food processor and pulse to incorporate. 2. With your pastry sheet laid out on a floured surface, cut a triangle from each corner, then cut diagonal slits down each side (approx. one third of the way towards the centre). 3. Assemble your sausagemeat mixture in the centre column, ensuring it is evenly packed. Then add the leftover stuffing on top, pressing into the meat. 4. Fold the ends of the pastry in first, then work your way down from the top, plaiting the sections of pastry. 5. Once ready to bake, use a pastry brush to wash the entire plait with beaten egg. 6. Pop into a preheated oven (190 degrees) for approximately 35 minutes until golden. 4 4 •4DE 4 • CEFOOD M BE R 2018 • WATERFRONT • WATERFRONT LIFE LIFE
