ABTA COUNTRY GUIDES 2020
W
elcome to Volume 2 of the ABTA Country Guides, your country-bycountry guide to the UK and Europe. From Albania to Ukraine, this is your go-to publication for vital information about the region. We spoke to travel agents and tour operators across the UK to gather their thoughts on what would be the most useful information. The result is our country profiles, beginning on page 6, which provide key information such as visa requirements, average temperatures and rainfall, currency, tipping policy, major events and attractions, plus details of flights from the UK, foreign office advice and information about whether or not it’s possible to get married there. All the information is also available online at countryguides.abtamag.com. As well as the standard profiles, we’ve also included some fantastic features, designed to delve a little bit deeper into destinations. Turn to p10 to learn about the major updates in Austria’s ski destinations, or if warmer climes are more your thing, from p38 Sam Ballard sails the Aegean Sea to sample its 6,000 islands, which look set to remain hugely popular on cruise itineraries especially. On p31, Bryan Johnson takes the road to Occitanie, exploring this little known French region on a self-drive holiday, while on p52 Audrey Gillan gives the lowdown on Vilnius, Lithuania’s charming capital. Sustainability is an overarching theme for tourism in 2020. On p72, we look at why Slovenia is being celebrated for its commitment to sustainable tourism and how it’s holding its title as the fifth greenest country in the world. We hope you enjoy reading.

Austria Onion-domed churches and attractive villages have made Austria the second-favourite destination of British skiers and snowboarders (or first, for Crystal). From St Anton am Arlberg to Alpbachtal Wildschönau, Austria has something for everyone. This past winter witnessed some major changes. St Anton am Arlberg said goodbye to its classic, 40-yearold Schindlergrat triple chairlift. Ready for the 2019/20 season, a state-of-the-art ten-seater gondola was installed. In addition, St Anton am Arlberg became linked with St Christoph, Stuben, Lech, Zürs, Warth and Schröcken to form Austria’s largest linked ski area. The “Run of Fame” from St Anton to Warth in Vorarlberg is 65km and possible for strong intermediates. In Kaprun in SalzburgerLand a new tri-cable accesses the glacier from the centre of town. This has radically changed the skiing around Zell am SeeKaprun. The new gondola goes direct from the centre of Kaprun to the mountain station of the Kitzsteinhorn via the Maiskogel. For those who want to try various different slopes, the new Ski Alpin Card now includes skiing in Zell am See, Kitzsteinhorn Kaprun as well as in the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn.

The road to Occitanie Bryan Johnson explores the little known French region on a self-drive holiday
W
ith easyJet operating direct flights from Gatwick and Bristol to Montpellier, a selfdrive holiday to the Occitanie region of France is more accessible than ever – and offers plenty to entice travellers away from the crowded beaches further along the Cote D’Azur coastline. Renowned for its gastronomy and wine (the historical LanguedocRoussillon region, famed for its wine, is now part of Occitanie), the region also boasts rich history – traces of Roman rule are evident throughout the countryside – a packed calendar of region-wide summer festivals and, of course, some of France’s most glorious beaches. A roadtrip around the region promises something for everyone. VILLENEUVE-LÈS-MAGUELONE Not yet on the tourist trail, this is a small town with Roman roots that offers an authentic insight into life in the region. Visit Le Petit Troc (translation: The Little Barter) – a vintage-store-cum-restaurant that sits on the old town square in front of the Eglise de Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone – for a twice-daily changing menu of seasonal vegetables sourced from the surrounding agricultural land – true farm to table. For beaches, the less shy and fans of a quieter beach should head to Plage-lès -Maguelone, which is frequented by naturists who prefer its azure waters to the busier beaches on Palavas-les-Flots and Frontignan. Both occupy spots along the same 9km stretch of coastline. SÈTE Built upon and around Mont St. Clair, Sète is a port town whose once commercial canals now give it a distinctly Mediterranean feel blended with contemporary French chic. Situated a little farther southeast than Montpellier,
countryguides.abtamag.com
around 40 minutes’ drive, the town is home to a bizarre yet entertaining tradition of water jousting that needs to be seen to be believed (think gondolas and medieval lances). The sport can be enjoyed from the town’s canal-side restaurants during the summer festival season. MONTPELLIER This is Paris without the crowds – beautiful narrow streets with postcard-perfect buildings and café terraces, set to the thrum of an evening’s socialising. Stroll to the city’s university, situated by the mesmerising Jardin des Plantes, a hillside botanical garden dating back to the 16th century. The city’s student population maintains a cosmopolitan atmosphere akin to Paris, sans the bustle and high prices. PARC NATIONAL DE CÉVENNES One of several protected national parks in the region, Parc National de Cévennes offers breathtaking views of mountain peaks, with less challenging hikes than those of the Pyrenees further south. Dotted throughout the park are small villages and hamlets where time appears to have stood still for the best part of a century. Cezas is a great place to step into the past, sitting on the crest of two neighbouring valleys and populated by a couple of thousand inhabitants. Leave the car here and walk into the tiny hamlet, or hike 2km to neighbouring peaks for stunning vistas of the entire park. DriveAway offers agents 15 per cent commission on bookings and customer service support seven days a week. Make a booking and get a day’s free car hire. T: 0203 9584 352 E: uksales@drive-away.com

Greece UK & Europe
Haris Theoharis Greece tourism minister How is the UK performing? We’re very happy with the way tourism flows from the UK, bearing in mind the context of Brexit and the financial issues that Greece has had. [Last] year we [were] up 5 per cent compared to [2018]. We’re also up 30 per cent in terms of tourism revenue. We are attracting higher-spending British tourism. In total our numbers were up 3 per cent and 14 per cent. The UK is also gaining market share within Greece. Why do you think that is? We are investing a lot in public infrastructure to bring in the higher spenders. We also have more four- and fivestar hotels being built, which attracts wealthier tourists. We are also getting more luxury cruises, villas and so on. The kind of things you can do in Greece – whether it’s enjoying nature or the culture – lends itself well to a higher-quality product. How has Brexit changed the way you view the UK? If anything we would like to strengthen our mutual relationship. We are hoping it’s the same both ways. From our side we are doing everything we can to allow
countryguides.abtamag.com
British tourism businesses to operate in Greece. We also want to make the process of coming to Greece as seamless as possible. Is overtourism an issue in certain Greek destinations? I want to be categorical that Greece does not have an overtourism problem. However, that doesn’t mean that we don’t strain certain infrastructures in certain places. We’ve put that at the centre of our upgrading of experiences that we provide. We’ve immediately worked with Corfu to fix the problem with the refuse collection. We’ve also put in place a comprehensive plan with places like Santorini to raise the ceiling of the amount of tourists that are there but also raise the experience of those that do come. Do you need to raise the profile of lesser known Greek islands? It’s partly that but we also need to talk about skiing or the mountains. There is even opera in Athens. We have many, many attractions. Athens and Thessaloniki are two of the best city break destinations you can possibly have. You can come to Greece for 12 months of the year and there is always something new to discover.

rom Mykonos to Santorini, the Aegean Sea is one of the most idyllic cruise destinations in the world. In 2019, just over 5.5 million cruise passengers came to Greece – that’s a 14 per cent rise on the previous year. But why are Greek cruises so popular? For starters, Greece is one of the sunniest countries in Europe. Athens has about 2,771 hours of sunshine every year, almost double that of London. The food is unpretentious and delicious and there is an abundance of culture and ancient sites to visit. There is also a huge amount of choice – Greece spans 130,000 square kilometres and 6,000 islands. In theory you could visit a different Greek island every day for 16 years and still not visit them all. When it comes to operators, there is plenty to go off,

For those wanting to board a cruise ship, there are the major American brands, such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC; luxury operators like Silversea, Crystal and Seabourn; or Greek operators like Celestyal. In fact, such is the popularity of Greece that you would be hard pushed to find an operator that doesn’t run itineraries in the region. A Greek cruise with one of these lines will typically call at the more popular tourist spots like Patmos, Mykonos and Santorini, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure (Celestyal calls at Milos and offers day trips to Delos for those who don’t want to mingle with the sunseekers in Mykonos). They’re the perfect introduction to customers wanting plenty of sun and the chance to relax. However, travelling on the larger ships isn’t for everybody. If your client likes the idea of sailing the

Aegean, but would rather do it more inconspicuously – and perhaps visit some of the lesser known islands – there are numerous options available. Intrepid Travel offers ten-day sailing trips on a small boat that calls at islands most of us will have never heard of, like Kythnos, Serifos, Kimolos and Polyaigos. These ports are so small that zodiacs are used to transport guests to the mainland, and dinners for the entire ship’s company can be hosted in the traditional tavernas that line the old harbours. These itineraries, which are part of Intrepid Travel’s sailing range, take place on board ships for no more than 12 passengers, who can either get involved in helping to run the ship or just sit back and relax. The company also offers Adventure Cruise itineraries, which are on ships that can take up to 50 passengers. They offer a more intimate experience than the larger ships but are more of a traditional cruise experience than the company’s sailing holidays. If you’ve got customers wanting to charter their own yacht for a holiday then Sunsail, the yacht charter company, could be a great option. Sunsail offers entire

ship charters (skippered or un-skippered), cabin charters and social flotillas. Guests taking a charter can plot their own course along the Grecian coast – and choose to drop anchor whenever the mood takes them. With such a unique – and varied – choice available, the company has ramped up its work with the trade in recent times, according to head of sales Laura Bowtell. “We recognise the importance of having strong trade partners and over the last 18 months [to November 2019] we have spent a lot of time investing in these,” she explains. “We make everything incredibly simple as we understand our product offering is both unique and complex. We have dedicated members of the sales team to answer all questions and a consistent fleet across all of our global bases to enable agents to sell our holidays easily.” The amount of options available to customers is staggering. However, whether your client wants to cruise, or sail the Aegean, there are plenty of options available. Five and a half million people can’t be wrong. ABTAmag.com

Vilnius
Those with a penchant for history, gastronomy, architecture or the arts will find Vilnius has it all in troves. Audrey Gillan gives the lowdown
A
Soviet-built housing estate, a nuclear reactor and a cold, terrifying prison cell. Not the first things you’d think of when preparing an itinerary for a visit to the beautiful Lithuanian capital Vilnius, but these locations used in HBO’s Emmy awardwinning series Chernobyl have become a big draw in the Baltic city. The suburb of Fabijoniškės is substituted for Pripyat, the Ukrainian town hit by nuclear disaster in 1986, and the Museum of Occupation and Freedom Fights (a must-see, fascinating place in its own right) is the site of the jail where the nuclear scientist who exposed the coverup is held. Guided tours of the locations and interiors afford a glimpse of life in the city during the Soviet occupation, which ended when Lithuania became independent in 1991. Soviet-era architecture helped, too, with the filming of the BBC’s historical drama The Eichmann Show, but it was its resemblance to Jerusalem that drew film-makers to Vilnius. An elegant, Unesco World Heritage-listed

city – where the baroque and medieval harmonise, and an Old Town boasts red pantiled roofs and cobbled streets – it has also recently been the shooting venue for Catherine the Great and Elizabeth I, both starring Helen Mirren, and War and Peace.
FOOD REVIVAL Chefs in Lithuania will tell you that their cuisine was destroyed by the Soviets and that the country once had a rich culinary tradition. “We lost our identity and our history and we forgot to be proud of ourselves. We were not allowed. All we had was bones, milk, potatoes and sour cream,” says chef Liutauras Čeprackas. But that era has passed and he and other cooks are at the vanguard of a gastronomic revival in Vilnius, one that looks to the rich past for dishes forgotten by a generation but also embraces modernity. There is a rich gastronomical seam now being mined – in the 14th century, Grand Duke Gediminas opened the city to all

religions and cultures, and as people came so did a confluence of influences and ingredients – with food from German crusaders, Eastern Europeans, Italian architects, Jewish peoples, Russia and Poland.
pickled cucumber. Stop and buy some black bread – almost exalted in this country – and some local butter to taste, or hop from stall to stall sampling.
INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCES
With many of Vilnius’ younger generation returning to the city after living abroad, the hip and vibrant feel of the place is growing. Not that bohemianism is a new thing here: the self-declared Republic of Užupis was established in 1998 and it has its own president, government, constitution and currency, and even has a navy consisting of three or four small boats. Here you’ll find street sculpture and art, great galleries, bars and restaurants, and a joyous, slightly flippant vibe. In the Station District, you can eat street food in an old train car, rave beside the railroad tracks or enjoy a drink on a platform at Peronas bar, complete with a giant statue of Sopranos star James Gandolfini in a bathrobe and shorts. The once down-at-heel, edgy area is flourishing under its rebirth. At Druska Milta Vanduo, a bakery and coffee shop, Canadian Christine saw a gap in the market – not everyone wants to eat black bread everyday – and so here you can have avocado and sourdough toast and French and American-style cakes and pastries. ABTAmag.com
The city is now home to funky Džiaugsmas, a bistro ranked number one in the 30 Best Restaurants in Lithuania that serves glorious zander beignets where chunks of fish are covered in crisp sepia batter. At Ertlio Namas, in a 17th-century house in the heart of the Old Town, the history of Lithuanian cuisine is on the plate: using just the produce of local farmers and fishermen, dishes can include mushroom soup with poularde, mushroom, cheese and turnips; and baked eel with doughnut, mangolds, turnips and fennel sauce. And the serving staff will tell you stories of the history of each dish. A fairytalelike journey takes you through “seasonsinspired local cuisine” at magical Sweet Root, where you might have encounters with foraged berries, sea buckthorn and rowan berries; or mushrooms like chanterelles (Lithuanians love foraging for mushrooms). A visit to Halés market, housed in a lovely building dating back to 1906, will bring you to stalls lined with traditional products such as salted and smoked country bacon, sauerkraut, salted herring and

UK & Europe Slovenia
Slovenia Slovenia has long been celebrated for its commitment to sustainable tourism through its innovative Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, which encourages and celebrates green practices across the country. According to the 2016 Environmental Performance Index, Slovenia is the fifth greenest country in the world, while its capital, Ljubljana, was named as the Green Capital of Europe in 2016 and took first place in the Best of Cities category at the Sustainable Destination Awards at ITB Berlin last year. One of the great joys of Slovenia is, because of its small size, the permanent proximity to nature; Ljubljana, which has closed its city centre to motor traffic, has 542m2 of public green space per capita – the largest of which, Tivoli Park, leads to two wooded hills, Rožnik and Šišenski hrib, plus a maze of hiking trails. Also encouraged is a river ride in a kayak under the city’s picturesque bridges.

Stratfordupon-Avon Anthony Pearce enjoys the cultural charms of this quaint medieval market town – the quintessentially English birthplace of Shakespeare
S
tratford-upon-Avon packs a lot of cultural punch into its tiny centre. Home to William Shakespeare’s birthplace and gravesite, the Warwickshire town has built its entire economy around the legacy of the Bard; at times, it can seem as if all of Stratford is a stage. On a recent visit on a hot summer’s day, we find actors in full Elizabethan dress performing Romeo and Juliet near the banks of the River Avon, a short walk from the imposing red-brick RSC, home to the 1,040-seat Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the 426-seat Swan Theatre. Just down the road, and under the same umbrella, is The Other Place, a creative hub for learning and research with a 200-seat studio theatre – the equivalent of London’s Young Vic to the Old Vic. In fact, there are enough Shakespearean attractions to keep even the playwright’s most obsessive fans enthralled for a lifetime. Aside from the theatres, there are the properties managed by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. That includes, of course,
countryguides.abtamag.com
Shakespeare’s Birthplace, a restored 16thcentury half-timbered house on Henley Street; Shakespeare’s New Place, a museum in the 16th-century home next door to where the Bard settled and eventually died, with an adjacent Elizabethan garden; and Hall’s Croft, the home of William Shakespeare’s daughter, Susanna Hall. Out of town, in the village of Shottery, there is the ever-popular Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, a 12-roomed farmhouse where the wife of Shakespeare lived as a child; plus Mary Arden’s Farm, the farmhouse of Shakespeare’s mother, Mary, in Wilmcote. Visitors can enjoy unlimited visits to all five properties for 12 months for a very reasonable £22.50 (children £14.50; concession £21.00). In town, and free to visit, is Shakespeare’s funerary monument, his memorial, in the Grade I-listed Holy Trinity Church. It is the architecture of Stratford’s oldest, and perhaps most beautiful, building (and its grounds) that makes this worth the visit.

Will those with no interest in Shakespeare’s life and works get as much out of Stratford-upon-Avon as those with? It’s true there aren’t masses of non-Bard-related activities to enjoy, but the town remains an enjoyable place to wander around and admire the Tudor timber-framed houses that still stand. It’s the sort of quaint English setting, with its cafés, bookstores and sweetshops, that many American tourists dream of. The timber-framed Hathaway Tea Rooms (19 High Street) dates back to 1610 and is a good place to have a cuppa before beginning an exploration of the town. On Henley Street, you will find the Beatrix Potter gift shop, Timeless Tales – across from Shakespeare’s Birthplace – as well as Magic Alley & The Creaky Cauldron, a museum described as “a phantasmagorical emporium of magical delights from wands and spells to sweets and quirky gifts”, and the MAD Museum, the UK’s only mechanical art and design space. For such a historic town, there are far too many chain restaurants and coffee shops, meaning the town’s culinary offering isn’t always befitting of its cultural prowess. That said, there is an increasing amount of good options: on the first and third Saturday of each month, you’ll find a farmer’s market on Rother Street, and there’s a Sunday market on Bridge Street. During our recent visit we stayed at The Arden on

Waterside (see box), which opened the No 44 Brasserie last year, and offers a menu of classic dishes as well as small plates to share. El Greco (27 Rother Street), run by husband-and-wife team Demetri and Flair Gougoulias, serves excellent traditional Greek fare, including meze. You could argue that the real star of Stratford is the River Avon, where you can kayak, take a gondola, river cruise or cross on the hand-operated chain ferry, which was built in 1937 as the last of its kind to be used in Britain. Over on the eastern bank, you’ll find a butterfly farm, a Ferris wheel, tennis club and the Recreation Ground, a large green space with views of the RSC Theatre across the water. Google Stratfordupon-Avon and you’ll see its famous timberframed buildings (including Shakespeare’s Birthplace), but the most beautiful area of the town is its riverside. Perhaps the best way to enjoy the Avon (and the canal, which snakes off it) is with a cocktail in hand on the balcony of the RSC’s rooftop bar and restaurant, particularly as the sun sets. There are also, as you would expect, a number of excellent pubs, including The Garrick (25 High Street), an inn since 1718 (with the building dating back to the 14th century) and Old Thatch Tavern (Greenhill St), which dates back to the 15th century. The Dirty Duck (Waterside) is nearly always lively. ABTAmag.com
