AMERICAS & CARIBBEAN
Dive into the Americas and the Caribbean
W
elcome to Volume 5 of the ABTA Country Guides, your country-bycountry guide to the Americas and the Caribbean. From Anguilla to Uruguay, this is your go-to publication for vital information about the region. We spoke to travel agents and tour operators across the UK to gather their thoughts on what would be the most useful information. The result is our country profiles, beginning page 6, which provide key information such as visa requirements, average temperatures and rainfall, currency, tipping policy, major events and attractions, plus details of flights from the UK, foreign office advice and information about whether or not it’s possible to get married there. All the information is also available online at countryguides.abtamag.com. Although this guide focuses on countries, we’ve also included some overseas territories and administrative regions, such as the Falkland Islands and the British Virgin Islands, which we feel it would be remiss to ignore. There are also features that dive deeper into destinations. On p56, Karl Cushing goes beneath the surface to some of the Caribbean’s best dive sites, while on p58 Gary Noakes highlights the many festivals that take place year-round in the region. If cities are more your thing, turn to p72, where Kevin EG Perry shares the weird and wonderful sights of Austin, Texas. We hope you enjoy reading.

Belize
Better Belize it By Emily Eastman
T
he road rattles and buckles beneath us as our driver navigates deep ruts, vast stones and puddles of undetermined depth. To call the route to Caracol bumpy would be imprecise; these roads are rugged, stomachchurning, and worth every jolt for the destination: the largest Mayan site in Belize, situated deep in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. We’ve come to Belize slightly ahead of the curve for the British market, which might mean rough terrain (although the tourist board promises that the jungle roadways will be paved in the next year or two), but it also means deserted destinations which, in more well-trodden holiday spots, would already be overrun with fellow travellers. As we hike the short distance to Caana (“Sky Palace”), the largest building at Caracol, I count just five other people exploring the site. And what a site it is, containing more than 35,000 buildings. In fact, archaeologists believe there to be more Mayan structures in Belize today than modern buildings. At the height of its power,
14
ABTA Country Guides 2020
Caracol was home to 180,000 people – a far greater population than that of modern-day Belize City, which is the country’s largest metropolis, and Belmopan, its capital. We clamber to the top of Caana for solo photos (and to marvel at the view of the surrounding wilderness, Guatemala just over the horizon), duck into burial chambers and admire the religious altars, plazas and the incredibly advanced astronomical observatory. With a footprint of some 195 square kilometres, much of Caracol is still awaiting excavation – 3D mapping has revealed large sections and structures long shrouded by jungle. But Mayan ruins aren’t all that this jungle contains. We make stops at Rio Frio Cave – an enormous natural cavern replete with giant stalactites – and Rio on Pools, a series of small waterfalls and connecting pools, deep enough to swim in, that offer a refreshing break from the road. It’s worth pulling in for an hour spent climbing over the rocks, shooting down the natural water slides and attempting to swim against the currents for that perfect Instagram shot.

Belize Americas & Caribbean
FOR THE ECO-CONSCIOUS Our tour of Belize is a snapshot of all that this English-speaking country has to offer. Eco-focused travel is a recurring theme; on an overnight at the five-star Ka’ana Resort and Spa, Belize’s only hotel to hold Small Luxury Hotels of the World status, we learn of its philosophy of blending sustainability with luxury and adventure. Excursions are encouraged, and we head out with Yute Expeditions to meet the fabulously named Adrian Choco and learn about the Mayan chocolate tradition. Heritage, sustainability and ecotourism come into their own in Belize. On a snorkelling trip from Caye Caulker, I’m impressed by the commitment of Raggamuffin Tours to protect the reef – the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Our entertaining guides Shane, Javi and Hugo tell us when to apply sunscreen to ensure it’s properly absorbed before we enter the water, and the operator is one of the few that abstains from attracting marine life with food. It makes for an incredible, authentic experience – we
countryguides.abtamag.com
jump from the catamaran quickly to swim alongside two enormous manatees and, later, slink into the water among four-metre-long nurse sharks, huge stingrays and serene sea turtles. I’ve snorkelled worldwide, and nowhere else have I encountered such rich, diverse marine life in one stretch of ocean. The coral is largely undisturbed and, where bleaching has occurred, huge reclamation programmes are under way to restore them back to full health, which so far have a 90 per cent success rate. Caye Caulker itself is the place to be for undeniable island vibes. Golf buggies and bikes are the only traffic along the sandy roads, which are lined with rustic bars and restaurants in uniquely Caribbean hues. You can reach this and Belize’s other northern islands by ferry from Belize City or by propellor plane with Tropic Air. You can’t beat the latter for uninterrupted views of the cayes or for selfies with the pilots, and the airline has recently announced scheduled tour flights from Placencia to the Great Blue Hole, a giant marine sinkhole.

Americas & Caribbean Belize
For beautiful beaches, Placencia ranks highly. This charming fishing village has dreamy resorts (Ka’ana’s sister property, Itz’ana, is currently under construction here) – we stay at the four-star beachfront Naïa Resort and Spa, which is 100 per cent Belizean owned and boasts the country’s largest spa. As well as an opportunity to relax, Placencia is also a chance to learn more about Belizean culture. We spend an evening entertained by Garifuna drummers from the Mawelele (“our voice”) group, and learn how the Garifuna people came to settle here and about their enduring traditions. We’re visiting in low season, but in high season (November to March) Placencia village bustles with a craft market that I’m told is worth a visit. Yet even in low season, the bars and restaurants of Placencia thrum with activity. It’s a nice background to one of the best meals of the trip; at the Maya Beach Bistro we share tamarind shrimp and goats’ cheese with whole roasted garlic before I devour
16 ABTA ABTACountry CountryGuides Guides2020 2020
a main of peanut-coated red snapper with curried watermelon. Placencia is also a great base for outdoor pursuits. Take an hour’s drive (on smooth roads) to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, which stretches for more than 128,000 acres – where jaguars roam and montezuma birds nest. Despite a long menu of easier options, we ambitiously hike the Tiger Fern Trail, which we later discover is classified as a “strenuous” route. Sore legs aside, it’s worth every sweaty step (and ant bite) for the awesome jungle vistas and refreshingly cool waterfall pool, all of which we have to ourselves. A week spent here leaves me wondering how Belize has largely stayed off the tourist radar – something that is no doubt soon to change as word spreads and the promise of direct flights from London sits tantalisingly on the horizon. For now, it’s the perfect suggestion for clients seeking something a little different; adventure, eco-pursuits and luxury all rolled into one un-Belize-able holiday. ABTAmag.com

Americas & Caribbean Costa Rica
María Amalia Revelo Costa Rica, tourism minister
How has the past year or so been for Costa Rica’s tourism industry? It has been successful. Arrivals by air into Costa Rica grew by 4 per cent from January and September [2019] compared to the year before, and we’re looking [at time of writing] at a very, very high peak season, which goes from October to December. We anticipate double digit growth during those months. How are your numbers for the UK? The UK is our number one market in Europe, almost 60,000 Brits travelled to Costa Rica between January and September. When you look at who comes, it’s 46 per cent couples, 17.5 per cent with their family, 24.5 per cent travel alone, then 11 per cent with friends. The average stay for European guests is 17 nights. It’s a big number for a small country but we are so diverse, there’s adventure, bird watching, ziplining, water rafting, surfing, yoga, wellness or whale watching. How has that performed compared to 2018? The UK is outperforming international growth. It’s a 4.2 per cent increase. What do you put that down to? We are targeting tourists who want an experience that includes nature and the opportunity to share authentic experiences with the locals. Whether that’s learning
28
ABTA Country Guides 2020
how to cook Costa Rican food or learning about nature in the rainforest. We’re really targeting a more seasoned traveller, even down to our hotels, 94 per cent of which have fewer than 40 rooms and are managed by their owners. Our return rates are great, too: 30 per cent of people who come to Costa Rica come again. What’s new in terms for 2020? We have been able to develop 32 centres for tourism in the country and we are looking to develop even more for tourists to have a quality experience. As a country we need tourism, it’s between nine and ten per cent of our GDP. And it is growing almost twice as fast as our economy. It’s important to share how we measure success. It’s not on the number of tourists but on the quality of life in the areas that are impacted by tourism. Now we can measure the Social Progress Index and prove that it is higher in 20 of those 32 centres. So tourism is designed to help people in Costa Rica? Costa Rica has been able to convert its economic wealth into quality of life. Because even though we are a country that has a per capita income of around $15,000 we have a Social Progress Index of countries that have double or even triple per capita income. Why? because Costa Rica has these institutions like health or education, we abolished the army in 1949 and use that money in health and education. So people have a better quality of life.

Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico
Following hurricane recovery, this Caribbean island is back on the map, writes Anthony Pearce
A
t the beginning of last year, The New York Times put Puerto Rico at the top of its list of destinations to visit in 2019, providing a major boost to the island a year and a half after the destruction wreaked by Hurricane Maria. “It was a big coup for us,” says Leah Chandler, chief marketing officer of Discover Puerto Rico, the newly formed destination marketing organisation, which was set up to “unify the tourism message across the island”. Chandler, like The New York Times, is excited about new projects, particularly in the capital, San Juan. She lists the brand-new District San Juan, which features cinemas, restaurants, a zip-line tower and a 6,000-seat entertainment venue, as one of most exciting developments, and notes that the forthcoming remake of West Side Story, both as a movie and on Broadway (the Sharks, one of the gangs in the legendary production, are from Puerto Rico), will turn
52
ABTA Country Guides 2020
even more attention to the Caribbean nation. “It’s a pop culture moment for the island,” says Chandler. “These moments are building up for Puerto Rico, so all eyes are on us. It’s a really exciting time to be here.” And yet, Puerto Rico has always been a fascinating destination. The secondoldest European-founded settlement in the Americas, San Juan is a great introduction to the Caribbean for those who are using it as a springboard (cruise lines such as Viking Cruises homeport here in winter), or as a destination on its own. In the city’s charming Old Town, Spanish influence remains: cobblestone streets and colourful colonial buildings – reds, blues and greens – are guarded by a 16th-century fort, the imposing Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Simply wandering through San Juan’s pretty streets is entertainment enough, but the city’s nightlife is also legendary, whether you’re
countryguides.abtamag.com
Puerto Rico Americas & Caribbean
looking for jazz bars (try Carli’s Fine Bistro & Piano for dinner and music), speakeasies (drop into La Factoría, named among the world’s 50 best bars) or nightclubs. There is an endless supply of great places to eat. Puerto Rican cuisine, which has its roots in Spanish, African and the native Taínos traditions, may not be as well known as Jamaican or Cuban food, but is no less delicious. El Jibarito serves cheap Puerto Rican comfort food such as mofongo (mashed plantain) with camarones al ajillo (shrimps in garlic sauce) and chicken fricassee. Café Manolín, which dates back to the 1940s, is an institution, serving classics such as serenata de bacalao con viandas (codfish and root vegetables). Marmalade, the superb fine-dining restaurant helmed by chef Peter Schintler, an Iowa native, is perhaps the capital’s most celebrated restaurant. Getting there is easy – the city is connected to the UK via Miami, New York or Charlotte Douglas in North Carolina. Outside of the capital, Ponce is a popular tourist destination. The country’s secondlargest city has Plaza de las Delicias, a town square adorned by fountains and home to the Catedral de la Guadalupe, built in the late 1800s. The Casa Armstrong-Poventud is a fine example of the neoclassical architectural
countryguides.abtamag.com
heritage of the island and houses the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture, while there is also the Museum of Puerto Rican Music, Art Museum of Frame Masters and the Ponce Art Museum. Of great interest is the House of the Ponce Massacre, built in recognition of one of the bloodiest events in Puerto Rico’s political history, when 19 civilians were murdered and 200 injured by police in 1937. Rincón on the west of island is home to many of the surfing beaches in Puerto Rico, including Domes, Maria’s, Tres Palmas and Sandy Beach, plus the Rincón Lighthouse. Culebra and Vieques, off the east coast of the main island, offer a true Caribbean experience. The former has the whitesand, turquoise-water Flamenco Beach, which was ranked third best beach in the world and is home an incredible array of wildlife. Vieques, aside from being an island paradise, has a fascinating history. It was the site of a series of protests against the United States Navy’s use of the island as a bombing range and testing ground, which led to the Navy’s eventual departure in 2003; today the former navy land is a national wildlife refuge. It has not been an easy few years for Puerto Rico, but as Chandler puts it: “Puerto Rico is hopping right now!”

Diving
Beneath the surface Diving the Caribbean is more than a rite of passage; with so many sites to experience, it’s a lifetime’s work, says Karl Cushing
T
he dive smarts of the Caribbean don’t end with its excellent visibility and famously abundant and diverse marine life. From wreck and shark dives to subterranean sinkholes and epic walls, the destination is truly is a one-stop shop for divers of all abilities. Accessible options for newbies eager to tick off a good range of sightings include Cozumel. With dive sites such as Colombia Wall and Palancar Reef, the Mexican island is a certified crowd-pleaser that caters to all-comers. Top picks for
56
ABTA Country Guides 2020
more advanced divers include the islands of St Croix and Saba, off St Maarten, while Bonaire, in the Dutch Caribbean, has long been heralded as the region’s top spot for shore diving, backed by sites such as 1,000 steps and Alice in Wonderland. One of the region’s bucket-list staples is Belize’s Great Blue Hole. Typically coupled with nearby dive sites such as Half Moon Caye Wall, which offer more variety of marine life, including pelagics, the sinkhole spans 300m across and descends around 125m into the seabed.
countryguides.abtamag.com
Diving the Caribbean Americas & Caribbean
Whale sharks are one of the big seasonal star turns, with April and May the best time to see them in Belize. Other hotspots include the waters off Cancun, Mexico and Utila, in Honduras, where your best chances of seeing some of the world’s biggest fish are March to April and August to September. Other Honduran high points include diving with Caribbean reef sharks at Cara Cara, off the island of Roatan. Speaking of sharks, Bimini Island in the Bahamas remains one of the “go to” places to swim with great hammerheads, large numbers of which gather offshore each February. Spots to look for humpback whales include the waters off Silver Bank, in the Dominican Republic, where pregnant mothers come each spring to calf and mate. Head to Dominica in January or February and you can spot male sperm whales off the coast, as well as the more commonly seen female and baby ones. The only hitch is you’ll have to free dive – or try to spot them from the surface – as scuba gear is prohibited. Popular wreck dives include the USS Kittiwake – a purposefully sunk, 251-
countryguides.abtamag.com
foot ship off Grand Cayman, known for its marine life, rich wall dives and shark encounters at East End. Sitting at 65 feet below the surface, the Kittiwake is mere minutes by boat from Seven Mile Beach. Other accessible, intentionally sunk wrecks include Lesleen M, easily accessible off Anse Chastanet, St Lucia’s prime base for divers. While you won’t find big pelagics off Anse Chastanet, you will find impressive corals and humungous sponges. Grenada is another notable wreck destination, with popular sites including the enormous former passenger ship MV Bianca C. Other sizeable options include the Antilla in Aruba’s Malmok Bay, a 400-footlong scuttled Second World War wrecked German freighter. Some dive sites tick several boxes. Take the Bahamas, where you can enjoy shark encounters while diving the Ray of Hope wreck off Nassau before going on to spy all manner of marine life diving the nearby wall. For a twist, try securing a permit to dive Jamaica’s infamous Pirate City of Port Royal, lost beneath the waves in the late seventeenth century.

Festivals
Fun in the sun There’s always something being celebrated in the Caribbean. Gary Noakes shares what’s on
Montserrat St Patrick’s Festival
Trinidad Carnival
Montserrat is the only country outside Ireland where St Patrick’s Day is a public holiday. Its connection with Ireland goes back to the 17th century, when Catholics exiled by Cromwell and persecuted on other islands sought refuge there. A 1678 census showed more than half Montserrat’s population were of Irish origin and ten days of festivities celebrate this each year.
Although technically only two days, the build-up to the event in February starts around Christmas, such is the frenzy that surrounds this most vibrant of carnivals. Taking place in Port of Spain, the advice is to familiarise yourself with soca music before booking, as there is little else played and it’s not to everyone’s taste. Real enthusiasts can pre-book to join one of the bands (marching groups) and take part in the parade and fetes – live DJ sets and music – that accompany it.
Mercury Fest, St Lucia Described as the ultimate beach party, this is one of St Lucia’s most anticipated events of the summer, taking place in August. Thousands arrive from sister islands Martinique and Guadeloupe, and from farther afield, for a two-day beach party at Pigeon Island National Landmark – think sun, sea, sand and live music.

Ocho Rios Jazz Festival, Jamaica Although more associated with reggae than jazz, this week-long festival has become a fixture in Jamaica’s calendar each June, and is coming up to its 30th anniversary. The festival attracts the best Caribbean artists plus key names from the US and elsewhere.
Grenada Chocolate Festival This week-long series of events in May embraces everything from Aztec chocolate-making techniques to a themed cruise, organic farm visits and yoga and meditation combined with chocolatetasting. A pre-bookable Cocoa Pass includes most of the activities on offer.
Junkanoo, Bahamas Many islands celebrate Junkanoo, said to originate from slaves celebrating time off over Christmas, but it has been most appropriated by the Bahamas, where it is marked on Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and again in summer. Junkanoo parades take place overnight in Nassau and other islands,

with dance troupes in carnival attire and competitions for best music, costumes and groups. The costumes, dance and music are inspired by a different theme each time.
Antigua Sailing Week Taking place over six days at the end of April, this major sailing festival marked its 50th anniversary in 2018. It caters for everything from windsurfers to superyachts, with daily prize-giving and celebrations that carry on into the night. Races take place along the south coast where trade winds blow, with well over 100 yachts participating, ranging from 24 to 100 feet in length (pictured below left).
Saint Lucia Jazz Festival The Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival is held every year in spring. The 2020 festival has announced an initial lineup featuring Chick Corea Vigilette with Carlitos Del Puerto and Marcus Gilmore; a Roy Hargrove Celebration with Willie Jones III, featuring RenĂŠe Neufville and special guests; and Alphonso Horne and the Gotham Kings.

Austin, Texas Kevin EG Perry takes in the Texan capital’s weird and wonderful sights, from urban bats to cultural icons – and, of course, its live music
I
t’s hard to go more than a few feet in Austin without spotting a sign or bumper sticker imploring you to “Keep Austin Weird”. It may be the capital of Texas, but this thriving and diverse city of nearly one million people has dedicated itself to providing an artistic and cultural alternative to the state’s mainstream. Walking around town you’ll spot statues of local heroes such as Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan, while cult musician Daniel Johnston’s mural of Jeremiah the innocent frog – always asking: “Hi, How Are You?” – has become a local icon. It’s also an easy destination to reach from the

UK, with airlines including British Airways, Norwegian and American Airlines all offering direct flights from London, as well as many more options connecting through nearby Dallas-Fort Worth. The fact that Austin remains the state capital of Texas at all is largely down to the efforts of one woman, Angelina Eberly. Take a stroll through downtown, just a couple of blocks south of the beautiful and historic Texas Capitol Building, which dates from 1885, and you’ll see a bronze statue of Mrs Eberly next to a cannon. Back in 1842 she learned of a secret plan to move the capital to Houston and decided that the best way
countryguides.abtamag.com
United States of America Americas & Caribbean
to raise the alarm was to fire a six-pound cannon into the city’s own General Land Office Building. Her plan worked, sparking the Texas Archive War, which eventually ended with Austin remaining as state capital – and with its reputation as a city of rebellious outlaws ensured.
LIVE MUSIC CAPITAL These days, Austin likes to call itself the “live music capital of the world”. Take a walk down Sixth Street most nights of the week and you’ll be hard-pressed to argue with this bold claim. The broad street is lined with bars and every single one of them seems to have a great band playing downstairs and another one playing on the floor above them. The resulting sound is a glorious cacophony that fills the ears and overwhelms the senses. Incredibly, that’s just the bars. In terms of larger dedicated live music venues you’ll find that haunts around the Sixth Street/ Red River area such as Beerland and Stubb’s
countryguides.abtamag.com
– renowned for its Gospel Brunch – are just the start of the fun. East of the I-35 there’s a further plethora of great venues, such as the iconic Scoot Inn on East 4th Street and Navasota. These places get particularly busy during March when the annual SXSW festival comes to town, filling the city with yet-to-bereleased film screenings and upcoming bands on a mission to prove themselves. You’ll need to be well-fuelled to keep pace with the city’s bustling nightlife scene, but luckily Austin is also known as one of America’s great food cities. Along with Memphis, Carolina and Kansas City it is one of the four places to have defined its own unique barbecue style, and the city is full of joints serving up top-quality fare for meat-lovers. You’ll find plenty of food trucks offering more experimental culinary fusions, and that adventurousness has influenced Austin’s restaurant scene – check out Chi’Lantro if you feel a hankering for Korean BBQ tacos served with Kimchi fries.

MEET AT THE SWIMMING HOLE This being Texas, the summertime weather can be sweltering. Zilker Park is 358 acres of green oasis in the centre of the city and plays host to the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October. But the very best way to cool off is to go for a dip in the park’s Barton Springs, an open-air swimming hole. Entry is a very reasonable $9 for the whole day. Follow the Colorado River east for a couple of miles at dusk and you’ll come across one of Austin’s most curious natural attractions. Every night during the summer, hundreds of people gather at sunset on the Congress Avenue Bridge to witness the breathtaking phenomenon of the thousands of bats that live under the bridge taking flight. Austin is home to North America’s largest urban bat population, and the sight of them leaving their perches to soar into the sky, forming a surreal black cloud over the river, is not one to be missed. Told you it was weird.
