This year is our 25th anniversary of Open Studies. Currently the programme offers 30 credit certificates, 10 credit modules and day schools, as well as a growing Personal and Professional Development programme. Modules are offered in the day and/or evening. This summer marks the end of the Open Studies programme in its current format. However Open Studies will be back in the autumn term with an extended range of Certificates and day schools and we’ll also be offering a range of summer schools in July and August this year.

Open Studies Fees – an explanation Our aim is to make the Open Studies programme accessible to as many people as possible and therefore, for all of our accredited modules, we offer a concessionary discount of 50% of the full fee to anyone who falls into one of the categories below, or is wholly dependent upon someone who falls into one of these categories: 1) Persons in receipt of any of the following means-tested benefits: • Income support • Job-seekers allowance • Housing benefit • Council tax benefit • Pension credits • Tax credits • Guarantee credit • Child tax credit • Savings credit • Working tax credit

Open Studies Certificates 2009/10 Each Certificate comprises 3x 10-credit modules each of which is usually run in two-hour sessions over 10 weeks, though there is some variation to this with the Personal and Professional Development Certificates. For the majority of Certificates there is one module offered each term. Certificates carry 30 credits at level 1, and for those students who wish to progress, it is often possible to count this as credit towards a Part-time Degree see page ??. We will focus on basic drawing skills of accuracy and proportion, and tonal work in pastels. There will be demonstrations by the tutor, and individual tuition according to each student’s requirements.

This module will give students the opportunity to make good use of their sketchbooks, visiting the local park to which our venue is adjacent. Exploring compositional ideas through sketching and photographing, we shall return to the studio to develop paintings in a variety of media and techniques with special reference to colour and atmosphere. Encouragement will be given to developing compositions from different perspectives which will bring an original element to work.

Through reading and analysing a range of texts and viewing selected performance extracts, students will learn to identify the key components of successful drama and deploy them in their own original material.
