Coventry-born former Olympic athlete, David Moorcroft, has signed up as patron of the Westfield Health British Transplant Games, coming to the city this summer.

The Westfield Health British Transplant Games are being organised by the charity Transplant Sport UK and will take place from the 30th July until 2nd August at venues across the City. The Games are open to anyone who has had an organ transplant and more than 600 athletes and 1,500 supporters from all over the UK are expected to come to Coventry for the event.

nEWS

David Moorcroft has shown his support for the Games by signing on to the NHS Organ Donor Register. There are currently 10,000 people waiting for organ transplants in the UK, 500 of these live in the West Midlands and it is a sad fact that many will die waiting.

Deli On a Plate! Chicken Cottage The largest British owned Halal fast food outlet has recently opened on Trinity Street in Coventry city centre. The famous chicken chain which prides itself on its fresh ingredients and high quality meats, serves a wide variety of chicken based meals from spicy wings through to freshly made chicken wraps and salads. Catering for all tastes the fast food outlet is sure to satisfy the tastebuds of many a chicken lover! Trinity Street, Coventry Tel 024 7622 9696

The Deli is somewhat of an institution around the Jordan Well area of Coventry city centre. With many offices, Coventry University and tourist destinations such as the Cathedral and the Herbert nearby, the Deli has been the first resort for hungry professionals, office workers, students and visitors to the city for the past several years.

Previously, the Deli operated as a simple take away establishment with many customers declaring the friendly, speedy service and competitive pricing so good, they would be more than happy to sit back and relax with their orders, were there facilities to do so. And so, in January this year, owners Chris Michael and Leigh Maoudis launched The Deli Diner, a few units away from the original Deli.

Chris said,“given the regular appeals from our customers and the availability of the property a few doors away, we spent many months planning and consulting about expanding before deciding to go ahead with it. In doing so, the Deli have taken their popular service, prices and diverse breakfast and lunch menus into a new 60 seat, climate controlled dining establishment, offering all day breakfasts, toasties, jacket potatoes, daily specials as well as a brand new salad and pasta bar! The Deli expansion is situated in Jordan Well opposite the Herbert Art Gallery with the original Deli a few doors away continuing to provide the express takeaway option for hungry customers on the move.

Life for Coventry city centre residents and shoppers got a whole lot easier back in August 2008 with the arrival of Tesco Express. Not only does the high street store offer its customers fantastic deals with monthly promotions and weekly buy one get one free offers, but it also brings with it a new touch of convenience and locality to city centre life. Open seven days a week from 6am to 11pm the new store is perfect for weekly shops and stocking up on all sorts of items, from fresh fruit and veg to magazines and newspapers. The pizzeria achieved 100% in every category of the mystery shopper’s survey, which monitored key service attributes of the restaurant’s staff. Love is in the air this spring, and if you’re planning on tying the knot this season here’s our pick of some of the best dresses, suits and accessories.

Traditional whites and ivory are always going to be a strong favourite for the bridal gown, yet subtle accents of colour taken from the bridesmaid’s dresses will add a subtle modern touch. For the men, look out for dark charcoals and light greys or cream as a contemporary alternative to the classic black.

OUT & ABOUT | DR WHO

DR WHO LANDS IN COVENTRY Sci-fi fans are in for a real treat this year as Coventry city centre hosts an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to BBC smash hit show, Doctor Who! Visitors to this intergalactic exhibition, hosted by Coventry Transport Museum, will have the opportunity to come face to face with some of the Doctor’s deadliest foes and get up close and personal to many of the props, costumes, monsters and aliens from the show’s history. As well as discovering fascinating insights into how the programme is made, visitors will see the famous TARDIS, together with the likes of Sontaran, Davros and robotic pooch, K9!

“We are extremely excited to be bringing Doctor Who to the heart of Coventry this spring. The Museum space is fantastic and enables us to showcase Doctor Who to its best advantage.

This is the first time that a large scale Doctor Who exhibition has been staged in the Midlands and given Coventry’s close connection to the show (Cov kid, Delia Derbyshire, composed the show’s world famous theme tune) it seems entirely fitting that it should be held here.

The location in the city couldn’t be better and the surrounding transport exhibitions are a fascinating bonus for anyone visiting Doctor Who. The TARDIS has got to be considered the ultimate mode of transport and the exhibition helps bring alive many of the Doctor’s fantastic adventures.

The show recently announced 26 year old, Matt Smith, as the new Doctor following David Tennant’s departure. Matt represents the eleventh and youngest ever incarnation of the iconic time lord. He has previously appeared as the lead in BBC drama, Party Animals, and BAFTA award winning series, The Street.

“The gallery enables our team to display many of the larger exhibits including the massive Empress of Racnoss spider, together with many of the larger props and set element. There will be many of the favourite creatures lurking within, including the Cybermen and Daleks. There is great excitement surrounding the forthcoming Easter special, and we are hoping to feature elements from that too soon after the programme hits our screens.”

Martin Wilkie, from Experience Design & Management, said:

The Doctor Who exhibition runs until September 18th 2009. It is open seven days a week from 10am until 5pm (last admission 4:15pm). Tickets are available to buy online at www.transportmuseum.com or in person from Coventry Transport Museum. Tickets to the Doctor Who exhibition cost £8 for adults and £5 for children (under 4s free). A family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children costs £22. Discounts are available for groups of 11 or more. Entrance to the rest of the Museum is free for everyone.

FEATURES | SORTED

Spring is the time of year when most of you will be thinking about life’s little problems, like finances and outgoings, new career challenges, changes with the home such as renovation and expansion, health and fitness plans or simply a change of direction in life. Feel Alive Magazine is here to lend a helping hand as we guide you through each and every step of the way to finding that perfect lifestyle you have always wanted in our brand new feature, SORTED!

EARN IT!

From stepping on the property ladder; renting, buying and sharing, to joint ownership, we show you the ropes. Getting the best from your current bank and saving accounts, we help you understand all of those financial concerns and decisions, assisting with practical tips and specialist advice from professionals in the know. Stick with us and we will get it SORTED!

With all the current media attention surrounding financial institutions, banks may be the last place you would think about storing your hard earned cash. However you can actually benefit from using some of the services offered in your local branch. From mini cash ISA’s, saving accounts and financial advice, we show you some of the best ways to earn top dollar for your pound.

Most people will have a current account in which your salary, savings and any additional income resides month on month. One of the best ways to optimise your cash flow is to open an additional savings account. You can arrange for a fixed monthly standing order to be transferred into this account, creating an automatic nest egg and reducing the need for frivolous spending.

Pay it off!

There are many forms of savings account; all of them suitably setup to help you make the most of your cash. From Lloyds, RBS, HSBC and Barclays, all located on the main high street of Coventry city centre, there really is a lot of choice.

If you have any debts, such as credit cards and loans, these are best paid off completely before you think about saving allotted amounts as they gain the most interest. If left, the interest rates will cripple any incoming earnings that you may have, isolating your account and creating a real drawback when it comes to saving. Credit Cards are so easy to use, and sometimes it’s easy to forget that it’s still your money you’re spending, be careful and live within your means.

Save it!

Cash ISA’s and regular savings accounts are effective ways of making your money work for you. A cash ISA is effectively a tax-free savings account. Up to £3600.00 per financial year can be put in without having to worry about tax deductions. If you have not opened one this year, April to April, then this is one of the first things to consider. In nearly all banks and building societies this is easy to setup and usually takes 1-5 working days before you can start transferring money and using your account. If you have a regular savings account, these are more tailored to your lifestyle, and the more money you invest each month, you will get a higher interest rate, making your money go further. Fixed rate savings accounts can guarantee you a specific rate of interest, over a prolonged period of time. These are savings that are best left alone, untouched so to accumulate the most efficient, highest interest rate available.

Financial advice

You can get financial advice from some of the leading banks and building societies, even if it’s just to pop in for a ten minute chat, reviewing your lifestyle spend, outgoings and monetary issues with ease. From sorting out which accounts best reflect your current situations, to helping you work through all of your debits, credits, loans and repayments, sometimes biting the bullet and accepting help and advice can really solve life’s little problems.

OWN IT! Manage that Mortgage!

Unfortunately the majority of us don’t have the luxury of being mortgage free, and with the monthly statement eating into your salary, its one of the main reasons people don’t have any extra cash to splash. However, if you do find yourself cutting back on certain extras, one of the best ways to use that surplus cash is to pay more off your mortgage than what is initially expected per month. This way you reduce the term of your mortgage quicker, leaving you with more money for those luxuries later on in life.

Taken as an example:

‘Say you have a £100,000 mortgage taken out over a 25-year period, with an interest rate of 6%. Overpaying by £100 a month could save you a healthy £27,039.37 and knock more than six years off the life of your mortgage’. Source: http://www.thisismoney.co.uk There are many ways to help you track what you should be paying each month on your mortgage, including a very handy calculator that will balance income and outcome: www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/ tools.aspx?Tool=mortgage_calculator

Buy It!

If you are looking to get on the property market you will no doubt be feeling apprehensive taking that first step onto the housing market. One of the ways to ease the pain is to ensure that you have clear examples of good credit ratings, essential if you are to get an estimate on property. Therefore, using a credit card often and clearing each monthly amount is one way to achieve this. When it comes to securing your first mortgage, there are many options available to you. Online, in the phone book, or just a simple walk down the high street, there are many institutions that can help. The most common approach is to obtain one from the lender or broker, of which there are many in Coventry city centre. ‘The broker will choose the products which best suit your needs, allowing you to compare with thousands of others available on the market’ (Mortgage Guide) A lender will assess your applications according to their individual lending criteria and these will vary from the amount you want to borrow, the property in question, credit history and employment status. You must be able to repay your mortgage otherwise they will not lend out the desired amount. You will be eligible for an agreement in principle and after this confirmation will follow allowing you to book a specific mortgage with the lender.

This will be followed up by an appointed solicitor, who over time will assist with exchanging contracts. You may be required to immediately take out buildings insurance for your chosen property and then in turn completion day sees you move in to your new home. Mortgage lenders don’t give their money away for nothing! As with any loan, they make their profit by charging interest. Be very careful when reviewing the various options and restrictions that these will impose on you and take your time to consider the different rates based on the levels of pros and cons attached to each offer. It is also worth noting that there are several mortgage options available, each with their own benefits, such as flexible mortgages, current account, discount and cashback mortgages, all available at banks, building societies and Estate Agents within Coventry city centre.

Protect that Mortgage!

You can also take out Mortgage Protection. Mortgage Protection Insurance Schemes will vary to some extent, but their common element is that they will cover all, or part, of your monthly mortgage instalments should you be unable to pay due to accident, illness or redundancy. As the value of property is one of the biggest investments you will ever make, this is essential as you never know what life may throw at you. Our motto is be prepared.

Value that Property!

If you are planning on selling your house, most people prefer to approach Estate Agents who offer a comprehensive package to help with the stresses of life’s biggest move. Estate Agents do not value your property, this is done through a qualified surveyor and usually costs several hundreds of pounds. Using local knowledge and experience, each Estate Agent carefully selects properties that they feel matches your asking criteria and estimation. Remember that you must get at least four or more estimations to gauge a true reading if you want it to be the right move for you. Never accept an agent’s estimation at face value. Estate Agents are also essential if you would like them to photograph your house/property and release it in public material, advertising it in their window and erecting For Sale boards. They also help arrange appointments for prospective buyers to view your property. Estate Agents can charge anywhere between 1.5% to 4% commission based on the final selling price of the property. Try and stick with one Estate Agent, as doubling your options can also double your commission and repayment. Arrange for a solicitor or conveyance as soon as you think you might be ready to place an offer. If the agent recommends one, do not simply accept their recommendation do some research yourself. Pay all your fees on time. If you do not feel the agent has earned their money, let them know and dispute what you should pay them.

SETTLE IT! There are lots of solicitors out there, but finding the right one to help with a variety of things such as employment law, redundancy, probate, wills and assistance in times of financial crisis can take a long time. Fear not, as we go in search for some of the best advice from high street specialists to keep everything simple and easy. One of the first things that spring to mind when people are faced with Solicitors is the process of applying for a will. Millions of people who fail to make a will are putting their families and dependants at financial risk. Most people are still unaware of the fact that if they fail to actually fill out a will, their estate, including their house and outstanding mortgage could go to the Crown. This is something that you should definitely consider, and there are plenty of opportunities to avoid this unnecessary result by arranging to meet your solicitor. When involving solicitors in the housing market, always strive to get three or more comparisons when you are looking for the right solicitor, taking into account that they will have to be competitive in this buyers market to make a sale. Once you have found the right Solicitor, they will then proceed to draw up a Contract of Sale, which is a legal document provided for the sole purpose of outlining the conditions of sale, including what each party can expect to transfer, take over or include as part of the contract signing. The exchanging of paperwork between solicitors can take up to 10 weeks, and this is a normal procedure that allows both parties to be fully aware of the commitments they are about to undertake.

Win it!

Introduced in 1995, No Win No Fee is an arrangement whereby if the outcome of your claim does not work in your favour then you do not have to pay a solicitor fee. Insurance will cover you against the other side’s costs and expenses. This process involves a one hour free consultation to discuss your dispute, feasibility of your claim, and advice on how you can progress it further. If you are successful in your claim, you will receive your compensation free of any deductions, as this will be paid from the other side. There are very few exceptions to this.

www.solicitors.co.uk

WORK IT! If you have recently lost your job, or are looking for a change in career then what better way to start looking for that all important next step by taking a trip to one of the many Recruitment Consultancies around Coventry city centre. Recruitment Consultants are involved in attracting candidates and matching them to jobs in client companies, catering for both temporary and permanent positions. From entry-level roles to directors and executives, consultants will help you find that perfect job. By working closely with the client companies, consultants can gain a much better understanding of the recruiters needs, and in turn, provide a higher level of service to both the job seeker and the client. After undergoing a brief interview, candidates are expected to provide certain levels of information to help the Consultants match salary, training, levels of experience and future opportunities more efficiently, gauging the potential of an individual before contacting the client. By building relationships, understanding working cultures, identifying suitable areas of expertise and coordinating with the clients to review each and every application, your new career is in safe hands. Recruitment Consultants can also help negotiate pay structure and salary basics for the candidate, ensuring your salary matches your potential. Of course all of this would be as useful as a chocolate teapot without a strong, balanced and well written CV, and so there are many ways you can build on this important piece of paperwork. Say what you can offer stressing the value of your skills and tailor your CV for every interview, or for the type of job that you are applying for. Always make sure that you are realistic when applying for a job. When you get an interview, try and remain calm, collected and focused on several key questions that you would like to ask, and be prepared by researching some of the companies history and working methods to gain the advantage over other applicants. If you are unfortunate in finding that perfect job at first, don’t despair, it can take months to find the right job. If you are unsuccessful, get feedback from the employer as to why and use that advice and build on it so you can turn that no into a yes.

FEATURES | CITY OF INVENTION

In the last issue of Feel Alive, we introduced a brand new feature which focused on Coventry’s illustrious reputation as a city of invention and innovation. Coverin g a whole spectrum of advancement from social, civic, educational and industrial with their origins and development firmly rooted in the city of Covent all ry. We continue this feature by talk ing to Roisin Gibbons, co-founder of new media venture Spotlight Interactive, an innovative compan y providing schools with works hops and insights into the radio and media industry.

Company: Spotlight

Interactive

www.spotlightinteractive.co.uk Roisin.gibbons@spotlightinteractive.co.uk Director – Roisin Gibbons

Tell us about your new business?

What inspired you to develop it?

Spotlight Interactive is a company set up to provide radio workshops for schools, colleges and youth organisations. With the education system constantly evolving the government is encouraging professionals more and more to head into schools and pass on their skills. The focus of the company is to provide these key skills to schools and youth groups throughout the UK who are interested in following a media/radio career.

Having worked in radio for seven years I know first hand how difficult it is both to get in to the radio industry and to survive, but also how exciting and rewarding working for a radio station can be. At school I never thought I would end up being a radio presenter, and it was a long and hard journey getting to that point.

This involves the development of quality radio workshops whereby students receive interactive training, putting them as close as possible to a real life radio broadcast. It also gives students the chance to research all aspects of radio from presenting to being a radio technician or a sports journalist for the day!

Providing these workshops for schools gives children the chance to use professional radio equipment, learn to be a presenter or reporter and get a real insight into the world of radio. If that then helps to make a child think about a career in the radio industry then fantastic, the company is achieving what it set out to do.

How long did this take from initial idea to getting it up and running? I’d say about 6 months, purely because it’s a new business venture and you have to make sure that you approach it from a business point of view. There’s so much to think about and when starting up a new business at times it can be a bit overwhelming but when you see the outcome of all your hard work its well worth it.

They are my biggest inspiration really. They always support my ideas and encourage me to pursue them.

I’m a good people person and I love working with children. I’ve had Seven years professional radio experience and I’m currently working in the radio industry right now as well as setting up this company. More importantly I never give up. If I believe in something then I really try to make it work.

If you had one piece of advice to anyone thinking of starting up their own business what would it be?

Spent this morning booking accommodation and refining the little details for our exhibition stand at Imex in Frankfurt. At lunch time, I went for a coffee at Browns with my colleague, Jo, to draw up a shopping list ahead of the exhibition and chat about the latest bargains. After this, we popped over to have a look around Republic and ended up buying a gorgeous new handbag, which will go well with one of my nice suits. On my way back to the office I swung by Cathedral Lanes and had a look round the jewellers, Francis and Gaye, where I couldn’t resist getting some stunning diamond earrings to wear at the show next week. Now all I need to do is find an outfit that’ll go with them….maybe I’ll find a nice new business suit!

This morning, I popped in to the marketing office opposite mine and helped the team get through some of their chocolate Easter eggs! After their Christmas chocolate indulgence and now Easter eggs the boys are looking a bit pudgy in the middle so Jo and I got them to agree there and then to sign up to a fitness plan at Coventry Sports Centre. No more “body like a temple” boasts whilst patting their pudgy bellies! At lunch time, I had a delicious cappuccino at Costa in Waterstones and then went to see if I could find a new business suit! I needed something that was professional yet fashionable. It didn’t take long to find what I was looking for. I got this great little trouser and jacket combo from River Island and a stylish blouse from Top Shop. On my way around town, I noticed some bargains advertised in HMV’s window so quickly ran in and picked up a couple of DVDs

which we could watch Sunday night as long as I’ve done all my packing. It’s my turn to get lunch for the office, so I stopped in at Café Giardinos in the Lower Precinct and got some Paninnis for me and the gang. When I got back to the office I just had time to book myself in for a haircut on Friday after work at Salon 17a on New Union Street.

WednesdayÊ What a hectic morning! The phone never stopped and there’s so much to do! I still needed to get some shoes for the exhibition so at lunchtime I skipped coffee and hit all the shoe shops in town. It has to be one of the most difficult choices to make, buying shoes, but I eventually found the most gorgeous and stylish pair at Faith. On my way back to the office, I stopped in at Renaissance Hair & Beauty and booked myself in for a manicure and a facial for the weekend, well a girl’s got to look her best! On my way home, my mum called me to ask if I could get some bits and bobs for the Sunday dinner so I popped into Marks & Spencer before it closed. That evening, Matt and I went to the Odeon to see a film as part of the Orange Wednesdays two for one deal. We then went for something to eat at Pizza Express, who also has a 2 for 1 offer, in conjunction with the Orange Wednesdays, so that makes up for some of my wayward spending!

Saturday

thurSday Since I’ll be away next week, my parents will be helping my partner, Matt, babysit our one year old son, Jack, so I wanted to get them some chocolates as a “thanks in advance” kind of thing. I popped into Marketing to see if the chocolate junkies could recommend anything but they were bickering about whose turn it was to make the tea! I ended up getting a nice box of delicious choccies in Thorntons in West Orchards, which came beautifully wrapped with an amazing bow! At least that’s some money saved on wrapping paper! I couldn’t help nipping into Clarins in Debenhams to stock up on make-up. Got a bit carried away. Eek! Got some foundation, some lippy, mascara, eyeliner, blusher – the works. I also got a bottle of Valentino Rock ‘n’ Rose Couture from The Perfume shop. It smells amazing!

Friday I noticed last night that Jack has had a growth spurt. They grow up so fast, don’t they? So today, I devoted my lunch break to getting him some new threads otherwise next week he’ll be running around in just his nappy, like Bam Bam from The Flintstones! Jo agreed to come with me. Got loads of stuff from Debenhams and Next and some little booties from Charles Ager. Jo also persuaded me to get him some trainers from JD Sports. They are so cute! After work, I strolled over to Salon 17a for my hair appointment and had a good old natter with the hairdresser, who recommended I visit Esquires, the new coffee shop at The Coventry Transport Museum. Apparently it’s fantastic and the museum is incredible and it’s free! A bargain! I must try it this weekend.

£750

I had some birthday money still to spend so I decided to treat myself to a new ipod from the new Apple store KRCS in West Orchards so I can listen to some music and watch some episodes of Beverly Hills 90210, on my way to Imex. After that, I tottered over to have my manicure and facial at Renaissance Hair and Beauty in Broadgate House. I didn’t realise they do spray tanning here. If I had more time, I would have stopped for a blast but I still had to get some toiletries from Boots for my week long stay in Frankfurt. After that, I thought I’d give Esquires a try and was really thrilled by it. Good coffee, good service, good atmosphere –just what I needed after a busy Saturday morning. I decided to have a look around the museum whilst I was here and boy was I glad that I did! It’s amazing! The museum has the world’s largest collection of British road transport and you can take a step back in time and experience life in the blitz. I can’t wait for the Dr Who Exhibition to arrive! After all that exercise and taking in such incredible information it was time for a drink! Well, it is thirsty work you know! I decided to meet Matt at Inspires Bar. He loves the European beer they sell and I like the alfresco style set up they’ve got going on. What a great end to the day!

Sunday Packed my bags ready for tomorrow and did a check list with Matt before sitting down for Sunday dinner with the family, which my mum and I prepared. The dinner was divine, succulent beef, roast potatoes and oven roasted vegetables, followed by melt in your mouth lemon cheesecake and a bottle of crisp white wine all from Marks & Spencer, pure heaven! Then we settled down to watch one of the new HMV DVD’s whilst little Jack napped in his IKEA bouncy chair and his granddad snoozed in his, which was rather amusing!

Angels and Demons

When world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyse a mysterious symbol -- seared into the chest of a murdered physicist -- he discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati... the most powerful underground organisation ever to walk the earth. The Illuminati has surfaced from the shadows to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy... the Catholic Church.

Coraline

This animated fantasy film is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s book of the same name. The film is the story of Coraline, (Dakota Fanning) a young girl who unlocks the door to a parallel reality, a fanciful version of her own rather boring life, where she meets a new version of her mother (Teri Hatcher), father (John Hodgman) and neighbours (Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders). However, this parallel world isn’t as good as it looks, as Coraline discovers, when her new mother takes her prisoner and she embarks on a way to escape the fickle world that she has found herself in. Fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas are sure to enjoy this dark and sinister fairytale. Release on May 15th. Odeon Cinema, Skydome, Coventry 0871 22 44 007

WATCH

Langdon’s worst fears are confirmed on the eve of the Vatican’s holy conclave, when a messenger of the Illuminati announces he has hidden an unstoppable time bomb at the very heart of Vatican City. With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival. Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair... a secret location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation. An explosive thriller, ANGELS & DEMONS is tipped to be one of the biggest films in 2009. Definitely not to be missed! Release date: May 15th

His hilarious exploits eventually lead him to make a difficult decision… Helen Fraser, who starred as Barbara in the original film, returns to play Billy’s mother alongside Dicken Ashworth (Coronation Street/Emmerdale), Lauren Drummond (Waterloo Road/The Royal), Victoria Hawkins (Emmerdale), Chris Hannon (Coronation Street/ The Wrong Door) and Holly Quin-Ankrah (Grange Hill/ Rock Rivals) in this charming, warm, witty and sensitive comic masterpiece. READ Blind Eye By Stuart McBride

It’s summer in the Granite City, but even the sunshine can’t improve the mood at Grampian Police Headquarters. Aberdeen’s growing Polish community is under attack from a serial offender who leaves mutilated victims to be discovered on building sites – eyes gouged out and the sockets burned. Detective Sergeant Logan McRae is assigned to the investigation, code named Operation Oedipus, but with the victims too scared to talk, it’s going nowhere fast. When the next victim turns out to be not a newly arrived eastern European, but Simon McLeod, owner of the Turf n’ Track bookies, Logan suddenly finds himself caught up in a world of drug wars, prostitution rings and gun-running courtesy of Aberdeen’s oldest and most vicious crime lord. I love going for coffee with friends after the breakfast show, we enjoy having a catch up in Chats, it’s the perfect place to hide yourselves away and have a good natter, the coffee is amazing and so is the food; no wonder they won silver for best cafe in last year’s Godiva Awards! If I’m still feeling peckish I’ll nip downstairs and grab some cookie-shaped elevenses from Bens cookies – brilliant! Chats and Bens Cookies Cathedral Lanes, Coventry City Centre

CHEERS | OUT & ABOUT

Let’s all raise a glass to some of the city’s finest pubs for making it into the prestigious ‘CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2009.’

The fantastic four; Gate House Tavern, Whitefriars Olde Ale House, The Town Wall Tavern and The Old Windmill have all raised the bar to gain critical acclaim in Britain’s original number-one, independent guide to good beer and good pubs. The guide is revised and updated annually by CAMRA members throughout the country and lists over 4,500 descriptions of both rural and urban pubs with details of beer, food, history, architecture, transport links and facilities.

Here is our own lowdown on the popular public houses.

Town Wall Tavern

Nestled right in the heart of the brand new Belgrade Plaza, this fantastic Tavern serves sumptuous food Monday to Saturday, as well as serving some of the finest ales, beers and spirits in Coventry. Not only this, they also have one of the most unique setups in terms of their incredible ‘Donkey Box’, which is one of the smallest bars in the country. Well worth a visit every time! You can find this idyllic venue on Bond Street, Coventry CV1 4AH Tel: 024 7622 0963

Our Coventry family will be writing regular blogs over the next 12 months In the last edition of Feel Alive we launched Create Your Coventry, a city centre campaign which encouraged the people of Coventry to step forward and share their stories, lifestyles and experiences. The response was so overwhelming and impressive we were spoilt for choice, with civic pride clogging up our letter box! We were particularly thrilled at how many people have made Coventry their home in the last few years, having originally hailed from other cities in the UK and Europe and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to tell us how much you enjoy Coventry.

So without further ado, let’s meet the chosen few! Already role models in many ways, we’re confident they’ll strike kindred chords with thousands of people as well as representing Coventry’s hospitality, creativity, ambition, spirit, motivation, innovation and compassion.

<< Music << Community life << Regeneration “I’ve lived in and played music around Coventry for most of my life. What really makes me proud about the city is watching it develop both culturally and artistically. I remember a time when there wasn’t really any decent live music venues and only a few places to have a nice drink or evening out with friends.

Matt

With great venues like Taylor Johns House, Inspire, The Tin Angel, The Nursery Tavern and Escape Bar now playing host to some great live music evenings I find myself spending more time in the city centre than I have done at any other time in my life. I’m proud and excited to see that we’re finally moving away from the grey of concrete and in a new, bright, colourful, vibrant and diverse direction” Follow Matt’s story at: createyourcoventry.com/matt

>> Culture >> History >> Shopping “Although I’m from Northampton, I enjoy regularly visiting Coventry city centre. I love the peacefulness and tranquillity of the Cathedral. It radiates happiness and I can think thankfully. It really is a pleasure visiting such an idyllic landmark. When I’m in the city I also like to visit the great quality shops and eateries. Having only lived in the region for 2 years, I’m still discovering the hidden gems that make the city so magical.”

I love to look and feel good so shopping is a big part of my life! “I love being a student in the city and would recommend it to anyone. To me, Coventry is exciting. There’s always something to do every night of the week and places to chill out in the day time. What I also like about Coventry is its convenience. I can walk into the city centre within 15 minutes which is fab as I love the shopping! With everything so close and great student discounts, it would be rude not to buy a new outfit once in a while! It’s a going to be big year for me this year. I’m in my final year at Coventry University so hopefully with degree in hand, I’ll be stepping on the first rung of the career ladder and spreading my wings!” Follow Kat’s story at: createyourcoventry.com/kat

Having both originally come to the city as students, we’re now planning to buy a house together and start a family together, in a city we’re proud to call home.” Follow Debs and Chris’s story at: createyourcoventry.com/debsandchris

FEATURES | THE SATURDAYS

The Saturdays can’t put a foot wrong these days. Three top ten hits, a debut top ten album and the chosen pop act for this year’s comic relief single, it seems we can’t get enough of this sassy five piece. Feel Alive caught up with the girls to talk fame, musical influences and celebrity crushes... Which famous musicians do you admire and why? Everyone!!! Pussycat Dolls, Take That, Chris Brown, The Spice Girls, Girls Aloud …The Spice Girls were a real inspiration to us and I guess the whole girl power stuff reflects us as a band. If we could have the level of their success it would be amazing! Any Celebrity Crushes? Josh Hartnett, Danny from the Script – he has the most amazing voice; Adam Brody…the list is endless! We fancy everyone!!!

You toured with Girls Aloud – how was that and who is your favourite member? It was fantastic! They are a real inspiration and when we first saw them perform we were like this is what we want to do so to be asked to tour with them was a complete honour. It was an amazing experience and something that we’d like to do for ourselves one day – maybe with a new girl band supporting us! As for favourite members they’re all great and gave us some brilliant advice on working together. What works for them is that they are all friends and get on well so that’s an important message. If you want any longevity in this

business it’s important that you get on with your band mates and luckily we do! We’re having the time of our lives! From your career so far what are your fondest memories? Since forming the band we’ve done so many incredible things our feet haven’t touched the ground! From our first single “If this is love” to the album “Chasing Lights” and our latest single “Just Can’t Get Enough” to supporting Girls Aloud, playing at the Soap awards and of course switching on Coventry’s Christmas lights! Comic Relief has to be up there though, we were so excited that we were asked to do the Comic

Relief song it’s such a big compliment and it’s so nice to be helping such a good cause. We’ve always dreamt of doing something like this and can remember watching the Spice Girls’ song ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ and now it’s us! Incredible! Do you get nervous before a performance? No not really, more excited! We can’t wait to get out there and have fun! How do you handle mistakes during a performance? Breeze through them! Ha ha! We try not to draw attention to them, then hope nobody notices!

THE SATURDAYS | FEATURES How do you balance your career with other obligations such as personal life, family and friends? Our families and friends are understanding and know that we want to focus on our careers and make a real success of the band so it’s inevitable that there will be times when we can’t go out with our friends or attend family functions. It is difficult to plan things as we’re constantly given new projects but this is what we want to do and we’re so grateful for all the opportunities we’ve been given. If anything being apart from family and friends makes us appreciate them more and we go out of our way to catch up with them.

Meet the SATURDAYS

If you could play at any stadium in the world where would it be? Madison Square Gardens, Croke Park and Wembley!! How are you coping with fame so far? We’re just five normal girls! We’d never consider ourselves as famous and we get star struck at everyone else! If anyone asks for our autograph we’re like why?! What’s the best thing about being in a girl band? Having each other! We all really get on well and it’s great to be on this fantastic journey with such fantastic girls! We’re having the time of our lives and we don’t want it to ever stop! You headlined Coventry Christmas lights last year – what were your first impressions of Coventry? We’ve played in Coventry a couple of times now at the University ball and the Christmas lights in Millennium Place and we’ve always had a fantastic welcome. The crowd at the Christmas lights switch on were brilliant and we had such a great evening. Millennium place looks amazing, a bit futuristic – we were definitely impressed by that! What’s next for you? More hits, more promotion and world wide domination!!!!!

Rochelle from Essex Rochelle was a child actress and was later in S Club Juniors with – you guessed it! – Frankie, who she’s known since she was 9. She presented for Children’s BBC for two years after S Club split, before landing her place in the band. She’s bubbly, loud, funny and loves shopping – “I don’t like saving for a rainy day. If it’s raining, I’ll go shopping anyway!” And she likes to convince the other girls in the band to spend money to lessen her guilt. Her mum is her best friend and she hates people breathing on her and bad smells (especially people with BO on the tube). She’s opinionated and honest and loves people with ambition. She likes tall, dark, muscley, handsome men who are successful at whatever they do. She keeps the band in check and makes sure everyone is where they need to be, when they need to be there!

Una from Tipperary, Ireland Una started her singing career in a rock band, and later wrote and recorded her own album, which she showcased around the bars and clubs of her native Ireland. She’s a sensitive, feisty type who seems like the sensible member of the group, but every now and again she’ll surprise you with her wicked sense of humour. She’s laid back and a bit of a homebody and loves relaxing and watching films. She’s an amazing guitarist, enjoys working out any stress down the gym and she loves a cup of tea. She can’t bear negative people and doesn’t understand why people feel the need to diss others. Her fellow band mates say that “everything about her is classy”.

Mollie from Richmond Mollie was in a couple of girl bands when she was younger but never got to the stage where any music was released. Shes girlie, has one of the loudest laughs you’ll ever hear and gets excited about everything. She’s abbreviates any word she can, can’t wait to meet celebrities (Britney is her absolute favourite) and is a big worrier. She dislikes rude and unmotivated people and loves fashion, rummaging around for vintage clothes. She likes long hair on a man and would like to meet a nice surfer guy on the beach.

Vanessa from East London Vanessa was born in Somerset and attended the famous Sylvia Young Theatre School in Central London. She’s appeared in several theatre shows, including the West End production of The Lion King. Rochelle describes her as “our Christina Aguilera – but ridiculously modest”. Her favourite saying is ‘cringe’, she’s cute with a feisty side and is very clear about what she does and doesn’t like. She laughs at anything and everything, and even though she may come across as a bit shy at first, she can often be found getting into trouble with her partner-in-crime, Frankie. She can be hyper, loves bright clothes and hates rude, arrogant or bitchy people.

Frankie from Essex Frankie first found fame in S Club Juniors back in 2002. She continued singing after the band split and has been waiting for the perfect opportunity to come along – and here it is. She says it how it is and she’s a take you or leave you kind of girl. She loves going to gigs and hates it when people make noise while they’re eating. “I always have to say something”. She loves men and will openly check out any handsome guys that walk past, and it’s safe to say that most men will find they’ve met their match in her. When it comes to guys she likes scruffy musician types and is most likely to find her perfect partner at a festival. She’s a perfectionist and she currently has an obsession with chocolate croissants.
