Montagne Jeunesse do a great range of face masks. Our favourite is the self heating ‘red hot earth’ sauna masque that warms on contact with damp skin to remove deep-rooted impurities, clear excess oils and cleanse pores; leaving skin soft, smooth and radiant.

Violets and Plums are the most sought after shades this season. Try a subtle sheen on lips like Clinique’s Bloomberry or be adventurous and make a statement with dramatic eyes as this palette makes a perfect contemporary twist on the classic smokey charcoal.

To give your skin an extra special treat try Optimum Line Decrease Thermal Polisher, it’s a micro-dermabrasive treatment that exfoliates skin to reveal a smoother, more refined complexion beneath.

1

We love Clinique’s limited edition full potential lip plump and shine in bloomberry and eyeshadow quad in ‘Black Tie Violets’.

Merrie’s CHRISTM In the last issue of Feel Alive scruffy sparky Lozz was transformed into a tantalising tradesman. He certainly made a good impression on legal secretary Merrie Dalton from Keresley, Coventry.

She wrote in to ask us for a style overhaul to appear in our makeover feature and cheekily quipped that if our man Lozz was still single she would love to go on a blind date with him… who are we to stand in the way of true love?

MERRIE DALTON Age: 27 Occupation: Legal Secretary Style: Tomboy Chic, this girl needs a serious glamour injection. Sentence: Time to ditch the jeans and T shirts and say hello to all things girly.

Before we played cupid we needed to give Merrie her much anticipated make over, starting off with a trip to Cabello Hair and Beauty on Hill Street for some serious pampering. First off it was a full manicure and pedicure involving a luxurious warm wax treatment to condition nails, soften skin and improve circulation. Merrie was then treated to a relaxing holistic Hopi Ear Candle to banish any last minute pre date jitters! Next onto the hair, the friendly team at Cabello treated her to a cut and

blow dry to ensure her tresses were in tip top condition for her rendezvous with the electrician. Merrie had a creative cut, which was graduated from the back, using razoring techniques adding definition to her style by gently blending layers. Now for the makeup, the Feel Alive beauty team accented and highlighted Merrie’s features using Bourjois 10 hour Sleep Effect foundation coupled with Bourjois Mineral Radiance pressed powder and a slight sweep of Clinique’s ltd edition Shimmering Stripes powder blusher in Tuxedo Plums across her cheeks.

Get the

Look

For her eyes we dusted Rimmel’s Colour Loose eye shadow in white and to get a sophisticated smokey eyed look we used Rimmel’s Colour Rush eyeshade trio in ‘Twilight Zone’ finishing with L’Oreal’s Double Extension Mascara. The final touch was a slick of Clinique’s Long Last Glosswear in Cabana Crush to ensure her pout was perfect. Now for the all important outfit, our fashion team had taken all the hassle of planning what to wear on the nerve wracking first date and pulled together this blinding outfit.

Merrie said: “Wow, this is such a different look for me – I love it and I hope Lozz does too! “ Shoes £20 New Look Clutch £8 New Look Dress £15 Primark Necklace £3 Primark Bangle £2 Primark

The

date tful! Ahhh Garage flowers, how though

Hot Gossip! Our love birds met in Priory Gardens and eager Lozz had upped the romance stakes with a bunch of red roses – how sweet! They were then whisked down to the stylish Bar No 3 in Priory Place for some expertly made cocktails. Lozz went for a colourful Key West Cooler and Merrie opted for a more refined French Martini.

Our spies told us that Lozz cancelled his pre booked transport home so he could spend more time with Merrie! We caught up with them the next day to get the lowdown…

Hypnotic!

Minutes into the date it looked as though these guys had known each other for years, lots of giggling and chatting or maybe it was down to the fancy beverages! Is this cheap skate gonna buy me

After an hour of getting acquainted in the relaxed atmosphere of Bar No 3 it was time to turn the heat up and head down to the award winning Turmeric Gold… The staff at Turmeric Gold had pulled out all the stops to ensure this was a first date to remember.

Our couple were ushered up to the exclusive Maharajah dining rooms and they had their own private little love nest, filled with luxurious throws and cushions. The perfect setting for a romantic evening.

another drink or what!

Lozz said “I had a wicked night, Merrie’s a fantastic girl and I really fancy the pants off her! Our date was brilliant, the pre dinner drinks in Bar No 3 were spot on, the curry was out of this world and my date was amazing! I admit I cancelled my lift home, I was having such a good time I didn’t want to leave. We stayed in Turmeric until closing then moved on to The Cross for a few drinks before ending our night in The Oak.”

Now now children

So, will you be seeing each other again…? “Definitely, but I think next time we’ll organise it for Friday or Saturday night and leave the photographer at home!” Merrie said “I love my new look, the dress and shoes are gorgeous, not something I would have picked out myself. I will definitely be wearing more glam outfits when I next go out. I love my new haircut, it’s different yet subtle and the ear candle treatment was brilliant, I’ll be having one of those again!”

Open Wide!

So all in all the blind date was a great success, the pair are clearly smitten with each other and are now officially dating, job done!

The date itself was awesome; I can’t believe he bought me roses! The whole night was so much fun and the time flew - we knew it was late when they called last orders in The Oak!”

iPhone3G S

The fastest, most powerful iPhone yet. Available in 16GB and 32GB sizes, in black or white and with a plethora of features, the iPhone3G S is certainly a powerhouse piece of technology from Apple. With additional features to the previous iPhone and iPod Touch models, such as a 3-megapixel camera, with autofocus, voice control, digital compass, cut, copy and paste functionality, messaging and landscape tilted keyboard, it’s an incredibly diverse and sophisticated touch screen mobile.

Sony PSPGo Alongside the PlayStation 3 Slim, Sony has also launched its brand new PlayStation Portable device, the PSPGo, which was launched on October 1st in the UK. The PSPGo has several exciting new features over the PSP-3000 model. One of the most significant changes to the PSPGo is the removal of the UMD disc drive, replacing it with 16GB internal flash memory so you can store game saves, videos and other media. The PSPGo is 16% lighter, 35% smaller and has a 3.8” 480 x 272 LCD screen. The screen slides up to reveal the handhelds main controls. PSPGo is an ultra sleek, smooth and sophisticated portable machine.

Operating twice as fast as older models, it is a revolutionary phone and with tens of thousands of apps online on the iStore ready for download, this is a very special purchase for that very special somebody this Christmas. Sony PlayStation 3 Slim The new PlayStation 3 Slim, which launched on September 1st 2009, has already sold incredibly well since its release; reaffirming Sony’s position in the current console race. The Slim is an attractively sleek and sophisticated machine, operating stealthily under a meticulous matt finished hood that delivers effortless 1080p High Definition graphics and superior Dolby Digital True HD sound amongst other noticeable additions. At 32% smaller, 36% lighter and 34% more power efficient, the latest model is a very cool console indeed.

When stacked side by side with the original PlayStation 3, it retains the same depth but is now a great deal slimmer and a couple of inches shorter. Instead of the touch sensitive buttons for power and eject, there are now two shiny silver push-button replacements that are both tactile and responsive, complete with a new look logo on the outer shell. Looking at the rear of the unit, we still have the LAN, HDMI, Toslink and AV ports as standard, alongside a two-pin power socket. The front end of the unit has reduced the USB port count from 4 to 2 on the slimmer model, and a hidden cover is now in place for the removable hard drive. With a whopping 120GB of storage space on the PlayStation 3 Slim, available to you for storing music, games, videos and a new reduced RRP of £249.99 and a built in Blu-Ray player for the very latest HD movies, Sony has made sure that its system is rightfully positioned in time for the Christmas rush. £249.99 Sony Centre, Lower Precinct Coventry, Game, Broadgate Coventry, Gamestation, HMV in Hertford Street and Argos, City Arcade

FEATURES | NATIVITY

COMES TO COVENTRY! Cast your minds back to the late spring... You may remember some strange goings on in the city when a hoard of celebrities flocked to Coventry, closely followed by a herd of schoolchildren and a couple of camels for good measure! You weren’t going mad; it was local lass and hot shot director Debbie Isitt’s new British comedy, Nativity. The festive feel good flick is a must see, with an all star cast and punchy script it’s almost certainly guaranteed to be a blockbuster this winter after its release on December 4th. Filmed entirely on location between Coventry and L.A, it’s a heart warming tale of how nothing can get in the way of the true spirit of Christmas. Directed and conceived by Coventry kid, Debbie Isitt (Confetti), Nativity is an improvised comedy starring Martin Freeman, Ashley Jensen, Jason Watkins and Marc Wootton.

It tells the story of Mr Maddens (Martin Freeman), a frustrated, under-achieving, primary school teacher. His long time adversary, Gordon Shakespeare (Jason Watkins), is the teacher at the posh independent school up the road. Every year, the two schools are embroiled in a bitter rivalry to achieve a five-star review for their Christmas nativity play. Maddens’ class always comes runner-up. The story of his life. This year, Maddens makes an idle boast to Shakespeare that his school’s show stopping musical has attracted the attention of his ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Lore (Ashley Jensen) – who happens to be a big time Hollywood Producer. They want to make a movie starring his kids – Hollywood is coming to Coventry! When over-enthusiastic new classroom assistant, Mr Poppy (Marc Wootton), overhears the lie, Maddens suddenly finds himself a local celebrity and at the centre of quarrelling parents, a wannabe show director, and more Mary and Josephs than he can shake a stick at. Now all he needs to do is persuade Jennifer to make Hollywood pay attention and make their dreams come true. Simple!

WE CAUGHT UP WITH DEBBIE ISITT AND NICK JONES THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS YEAR’S CHRISTMAS BLOCKBUSTER SET AND PRODUCED IN THE CITY OF COVENTRY.

Things are really cool in Nazareth “I’d worked with Debbie before,” said Nativity producer Nick Jones, “and when she contacted me and said let’s do a movie with kids and let’s do it around a Nativity play and see what happens I said Yes! Great. Where do I sign? It seemed like a good idea at the time. And then you get into children’s working legislation and Debbie starts asking for goats and pigs and camels. And later on, she’s talking about flying kids from the top of Coventry Cathedral. Before you know it, you’re in so deep there’s only one way out which is to keep going.” Debbie Isitt is a self-confessed “production team’s nightmare”. She knows that her way of working is not for everyone, that not everyone appreciates the long hours, the uncertainty, the risks, and the pressures involved in improvising. But Isitt continues to attract immensely talented actors and key crew members, some of whom have already experienced her ‘extreme sport’ style of filmmaking and come back for another ride. So why do they do it? And having done it, why do some of them agree to have another go? “I think it’s because they know it’s a special thing,” says Isitt. “It’s special because it is so spontaneous. Not only the actors but every single person on set is improvising. Normally, filmmaking isn’t that kind of world. It’s a world of money and bond companies and insurers where everybody is looking over everybody else’s shoulder and checking time and motion.

42 Feel Alive Winter 2009

It’s not the kind of world where people just do what they feel like in the moment. But it is absolutely my mission to ensure that keeps happening because it makes the set a truly wonderful, creative place.” “They’d say You can’t have camels in the cathedral! And anyway, we can’t find any! And anyway they’re too expensive and the ground won’t take their weight!” says Isitt. “And I’d say, Oh, okay. Let’s put the camels over there, shall we? I suppose it’s just absolute determination. For me, that’s what directing is. If someone says no, I just keep being positive..” A large part of Isitt’s inspiration for her latest comedy is her unalloyed nostalgia for the blissful, primary-coloured, paste-scented years from five to 11. As her daughter nears the end of her primary years and prepares to enter secondary school, Isitt was looking for a means to prolong the memory of her own heady time as the star of her Coventry Catholic school’s Nativity plays. “I was Mary when I was seven and my sister was Mary the year before and my other sister was Mary the year after. Mary was my first stage role and I absolutely loved it. It was my heyday.” “I have so many friends who wanted to be actors but trained as teachers as ‘something to fall back on’. Just like Mr. Maddens they went into teaching and felt like failures, but for me being a teacher is far more important than being an actor or a director. I have met so many inspirational teachers over the years that I really wanted to explore the notion of teaching and education in Nativity. In the film Mr Poppy is ‘the man’ in this respect, someone who understands that every child has a unique and special talent. We get so hung up on academic results that we sometimes forget how to value children properly and how to inspire them to be the best they can be. In the film Mr Maddens has to learn that his children are better than he thinks they are because he has been looking in the wrong place for their talents. By learning to embrace the children for who they are he learns to let go of his own repressed feelings of failure and really excel as a teacher and a human being.”

Actor Martin Freeman is a veteran Isitt performer, having previously worked on Confetti although unlike the previous film, Nativity was presented to him with a structured beginning and a finite end in the form of a Christmas production. “I liked the pitch about a film set around a Nativity play,” he says. “It sounded like potentially a nice story with a bit of a love story and a bit of hope and joy for children. And Debbie is open to everything. If you feel like doing something, she will say yes, do it. I find it really enjoyable. I like the fact that she is brave enough to do a film without a script. She is a lunatic but she is a visionary lunatic.” “I was really hopeful that Martin would pull out all the stops for me on this one and he did,” says Isitt of her leading man. “On Confetti, he had a much smaller role because there were so many key cast members in that film. I warned him that improvising his way through Nativity in the lead would be a lot more demanding. I wanted to be sure that he was up for it so I told him it meant that he would have to dig deep and show a big range, taking a few more risks and relying on himself a lot more than he had to in Confetti where he could rely on the ensemble. And then I said: And you are going to have to contend with Marc Wootton who is going to play your classroom assistant. That’s when his face fell. Everything else, I think I can do but Marc Wootton?! How many days!!? I said nearly all the time. He said, Okay, I’ll try. And then I said, Oh, and there will be 30 kids.” “You know the adage about never working with children and animals?” asks Freeman. “Well, Marc Wootton is another one – there’s children, animals and Marc. He is half beast, half child. He’s like his own species.” After a brief six-week shoot, Debbie Isitt came away with 120 hours of rough footage with which to assemble the feel-good, familyfriendly Christmas story she’d set out to create. The editing period extended to 10 months, working day and night. “My editor is so important to me that I had to actually get together with him,” says Isitt of her partner and chief editor, Nicky Ager. “I couldn’t run the risk of losing him to another film so I had to get

him to father my child. It means that we can work from home 24/7. To get that amount of material down to a film of around 90 minutes means a lot of trying things out and changing them again and again. But my editor is an amazing, tenacious person. Of course, we row and sometimes I kick the door in but it’s all for the greater good and the door can be replaced. When we work together, we have a real shorthand and we always agree on the thing that really counts: the right moment to keep in or take out.”

Isitt’s collaboration with Ager also extends to the original music and songs from the musical in the film. Isitt adds: “The music in Nativity is really important. Children love music, they love to sing and dance. It is a natural instinct in them. Nicky Ager and myself began writing the songs as a kind of experiment just to see if we could ‘rock up’ the Nativity a bit and make songs that are catchy, poppy and appealing to kids. Children are responding to the songs so well that we are now planning a full blown stage musical around the film.” “In some ways, I think I would have liked to be a primary school teacher although I’m sure I haven’t got the patience,” says Isitt. “I love the environment so much. Being there on a summer shoot for the film with all the children’s drawings on the walls and the bright colours everywhere was like a visit to another world. It was a sort of escape. I have panic attacks now that my daughter only has one year left at her primary. I wake up in the middle of the night thinking I’m losing touch with that world again! For me it was a seamless bubble of loveliness and it has been for my daughter as well. I suppose that in some way, this film is a way for me to capture that world and to keep it in a bubble forever.” Released 4th December

FEATURES | CITY OF INVENTION

BE !NVENTIVE We continue our feature Covent ry city of Invention which focuses on Coventry’s illustrious reputa tion as a city of invention. Under its rallying call of Be !nventive and with its origins firmly rooted in the city from JK Starley’s mo dern bicycle to the low carbon vehicle, from international twinni ng to the smokeless zone.

Be !nventive celebrates the inn ate inventiveness of Coventry’s people, a source of real pride and sends a message to new inward investors about the skil ls and versatility they can find among the Coventry workforce.

In this edition Mick McLaughlin talks to Rob Shoesmith, a binman in Coventry whose iPhone/ iTouch application, Problem Halved, has touched upon a niche in mobile technology.

Tell us about your Invention? Problem Halved is a user generated agony aunt style application for use on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The idea is simple; if you have a problem you can post it in Problem Halved and wait for the community to help solve your problem. What inspired you to develop it? I studied Internet Marketing at Derby University with a view to go into teaching. Due to a lack of maturity on my part and limited finances I was forced to quit the course. Since then I have worked at Coventry City Council as a Binman. I have always wanted to get into mobile phone and software development and had been looking for a break. I wanted to invent something that will help people. I thought a problem solving application was lacking in the mobile phone application market. How long did this take from initial idea to getting the concept into development stage? Medl mobile were the company that I submitted my idea into. It took around 3 months from the initial concept to get developed and put into the iTunes app store.

48 Feel Alive Winter 2009

What skills, experience and qualities do you have that can contributed to this concept being created? I had undertaken 2 years of an internet marketing degree and had a very keen interest in technology and web development. I have self taught myself in many areas of online marketing. How will this make a contribution to the business world? In terms of the business world, users of Problem Halved can post problems relating to issues they are facing at work. One such example would be bullying in the work place, or how to deal with an upcoming presentation. It isn’t designed to take the business world by storm, but to support individuals on a personal level with issues they may be facing.

CITY OF INVENTION | FEATURES How do you intend to market it? I have used local, national and international media to promote Problem Halved. The use of online marketing is key to making my application a success. Use of social networking integration will be fundamental to its success. One tip I would give to anyone is to network and build up a contacts network. Always ask questions and follow up on every email you send.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve been given?

What do you think is the most useful invention to date?

Find a unique selling point and exploit it. Find something that the competition hasn’t already done and that your potential customers would need – obvious really, but something that many people overlook.

The internet and email. It has allowed users from all over the world to connect with each other. Learning has become so much easier and there are so many resources online to develop yourself with.

Do you have any more ideas in the pipeline? I have around 30 other ideas in the pipeline for both mobile and web applications. I’m currently focusing all my efforts to make Problem Halved a great success. Once this has been established I will be looking into developing other ideas of mine. What’s your greatest ambition?

My fiance inspires me. I want to provide a better life for us and my dream is to live in the countryside with a little land for her horses.

My greatest ambition that is partially being realised is the ability to help people. Problem Halved has played a huge part in realising this ambition. I would love to support other organisations with their internet/marketing activities and ideally I’d like to set up my own company in the future developing my ideas and supporting other like-minded people get their ideas off the ground.

If you had one piece of advice to anyone thinking of developing an idea what would it be?

How would you encourage people to develop their ideas? Do you think education is important?

Go for it. Little did I know 6 months ago what would have happened. I work as a Binman for Coventry City Council. Now I have appeared on Sky News, and BBC CWR and will be appearing on CNN and the Gadget Show – it’s amazing! I totally believe that if you work hard enough anything is possible. Take things a step at a time. Always believe anything is possible.

Brainstorm. Sit down with a pen and paper and brainstorm a load of ideas. Then pitch them to your family and friends to give you honest feedback. Then do your research into your competition. I think education is important but not necessarily a traditional university education as this does not suit many people – there are also great vocational courses and apprenticeships out there. I strongly believe you can self teach yourself a great deal if you have the energy, enthusiasm and desire to succeed. As long as you are having fun you can learn a heck of a lot. It’s vital you enjoy the subject you are learning.

What or whom inspires you?

We were overwhelmed with entries and are incredibly impressed with the level of talent out there! Images have been submitted from all walks of life, from city living to scenic landscapes, making shortlisting extremely tough!

Alternatively you can purchase a calendar by calling the Tourist Information Centre on 024 7622 5616 or emailing tic@cvone.co.uk.

7.99 Only £

The competition was won by Raphaella Philcox, an 11 year old schoolgirl from Leamington Spa after her photograph of Frank Whittle taken from underneath the Whittle Arches in Millennium Place won over the judges.

JUNE War Memorial Park By Kat Rouse

Raphaella’s picture of Frank Whittle particularly stood out due to its excellent composure and iconic nature. Despite being such a young age (only 10 when she took the photo!), the keen amateur photographer beat off competition from around 550 entries to claim the prize of £200 Jessops’ vouchers. Raphaella will now see her photo featured on the front cover of the official 2010 Coventry calendar alongside a further 11 runners up.

ER SEPTEMB School t Blue Coarner By Peter Tu

The calendar is available for just £7.99 in all good book shops and attractions throughout Coventry, including the Tourist Information Centres in the Coventry Transport Museum and St Michael’s Tower in the Cathedral Ruins.
