National health product retailer Holland & Barrett has announced major plans to relocate to a new £7.5m national headquarters in Nuneaton. The proposals, which go before the council in August, would see a 35,000 sq ft, three-level office built at Eliot Business Park, by the Deeley Group. Holland & Barrett is the leading retailer of vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements in the UK with over 550 stores, and already employs 125 people at its Attleborough Fields offices. Around 125 existing staff would see their roles moved to the site while new jobs could be created. The new headquarters, which could employ up to 250 staff would be finished in late 2010 if the Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council planning authority approve the plans. Peter Aldis, chief executive of Holland & Barrett, said: “We are delighted to be involved in the proposed Eliot Park development. This will secure Holland & Barrett’s long term future in Nuneaton and continue significant job creation in the area.”

The news has been welcomed by Nuneaton MP, Bill Olner, who believes the potential move would help further establish Nuneaton as a prime business location. Olner said: “This is brilliant news for Nuneaton and a major endorsement of what our town can offer for large, national businesses. Holland & Barrett is the leading retailer of its type in the UK and a new headquarters at Eliot Business Park would create new jobs and give the business community a major boost.

“I have stressed before how important it is to continue investing in Eliot Business Park and this is a very exciting announcement, which I fully support.” Eliot Business Park was begun in 2000 and its occupiers include the Department of Work and Pensions, Warwickshire County Council, along with smaller businesses. Peter Deeley, managing director of Deeley Group, said: “We will be tailoring this site to the needs of Holland & Barrett and I believe this is extremely positive news for the area. “Eliot Business Park continues to grow and to have an established high-street brand operating from there will further establish Nuneaton’s credentials as a prime location for business. “We are confident that the planning authority and residents of the area will be as excited as we are by the proposals.”

New Lidl Store

A new Lidl Store is coming to Nuneaton, creating up to 30 new jobs. Borough Councillors approved an application by the International Company Lidl who are set to build a store and an adjoining car park in Queen’s Road, where the Co-op dance hall and the Nag’s Head pub once stood. A landscaped, fenced garden will also be incorporated into the design.

150th Anniversary Parking Charges

A review of hospital parking charges at George Eliot Hospital is underway. Health bosses are considering waiving charges for cancer patients, pregnant women, and parents of sick children. These are patients who are more likely to have regular visits to the hospital and for long periods at a time.

Throughout October members of the George Eliot Fellowship held a series of events to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of Adam Bede, written by former town schoolgirl Mary Ann Evans, better known as Victorian Novelist George Eliot. Students at Nuneaton’s King Edward VI college performed a dramatised version of the book which took place at Bedworth Arts Centre.

Young Swan

Anglers across the borough are being urged to act responsibly after a young swan was discovered in difficulty after swallowing a discarded hook. Other discarded hooks and lines were also found nearby. Councillors have decided to review the policy on angling of council owned stretches of water. They are calling on the support of local fishing club members to help inform the policy.

Warwickshire’s County Record Office has seen a significant increase in the number of people investigating their ancestors. Of those who visit the records office, 70% are researching their family history!

New Academy

A public consultation on the proposed academy on the Alderman Smith site in Stockingford will begin at the end of September for a period of six weeks. North Warwickshire and Hinckley College will be coordinating the consultation. The new academy would be built with £30m of Government money and aims to be established by September 2010, if plans come to fruition.

Armed Forces

The Fusiliers and Queen’s Gurkha Signals have been given the Freedom of the Borough. Council Leader Peter Gilbert said “These are extremely difficult times for our armed forces, and this will be a way of showing our gratitude for the outstanding work they do”.

New Gym

A new gym and fitness centre opened for business in October. Based at Liberty Way, Attleborough Fields, the centre has a fully equipped fitness arena, seated resistance equipment with integrated entertainment system, a free weights zone, dance studio and modern changing facilities.

Raising Money

A benefit concert held at Bedworth Civic Hall in September raised nearly £4,000 for the families of two soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan. The concert was in honour of local Fusiliers, Simon Valentine and Louis Carter who died whilst on foot patrol together in August. “Support throughout the borough was tremendous” said Civic Hall manager, Tim Norton.

Healthy Living

A Healthy £17,000 boost has been given by Heart Research, Healthy Hearts and the Big Lottery to fund a project by the local Healthy Living Network. MEDICAL checks, lifestyle advice and exercise sessions are being offered in Nuneaton and Bedworth. Men can receive body MoTs, including weight and blood pressure tests, while women can get fit and active by taking part in Bhangra-themed dance classes. For more information, contact 024 7632 2048.

Music

Warwickshire education chiefs want to get more young people playing music by raising the profile of the county music service and what it can offer. County Music Service director Andrew Atkins said: “Music develops social skills, team working skills and provides an opportunity to develop the creative side of the brain which at any age is important in shaping who we are.”

Natural Play Area

Bermuda Village Residents’ Association are hoping to secure funding from the Big Lottery Community Spaces Fund to create a natural play area designed to encourage young people to explore, experience and investigate the natural world within their community. A spokesman for the association said: “The vision is to create a natural play area so that young people are able to enjoy this wonderful open space and learn about wildlife.

Registering a birth, death or marriage has just become much easier, you can now simply log them at any of the county’s registration offices in Atherstone, Nuneaton, Rugby, Warwick or Stratford.

Know about Finance

So many great entrepreneurs with great business ideas fall down with a lack of awareness about financial structure and models that can make the difference between success and failure. Get yourself on a basic finance course that will teach you the key things to look out for, such as cash flow, remember more businesses go under because of lack of cash flow rather than lack of profit. When you are building up a business you need to understand the danger of surrounding yourself with too many fixed costs that you cannot easily shed in a downturn.

When your business grows you will be reliant on people working with you to expand. You need to understand employment law, which can be researched on the internet, but treating people fairly and “as you would like to be treated yourself” is best practised to ensure a loyal workforce who will give 100% to support you.

Know your potential market

Set prudent budgets

Your business plan needs to be based on prudent sales estimates; if you have a target of selling 12,000 ‘X’ in year one, you are unlikely to sell a 1,000 in the first month! So in the business plan set out monthly budgets with targets above that.

Get outside support

Everybody needs a mentor, everybody needs somebody who can stand back and look at the bigger picture, which can be very difficult for an owner/ manager to do. Seek out an experienced business partner who you could offer a very small share in the business to give you business support and advice; which could be worth its weight in gold.

Quality

Again you want to aim at best quality in your market. The British consumer has become very demanding and wants good quality ‘products’, even at the value for money end of the market.

Innovation

Innovation is the ‘life blood’ of any business, you should always have new ‘products’ to sell, and a good measure of this is to ensure that at least 50% of what you sell is innovated less than 3 years ago.

You need to aim to provide the best service in your market, better than any of your competitors. Good service comes at a cost and you need to understand whether providing this best possible service is actually affordable.

Continuous improvement in everything you do

When you have found success it is easy to sit back and enjoy it, especially after perhaps several years of extremely hard work. To ensure your business continues to grow you need to look for ‘continuous improvement’ not just in the ‘products’ you sell but in everything you and every employee do. There is always a better way, there is always a more cost effective way.

Research the market and the competition properly, do not assume that just because you like a product the rest of the world will like it, and understand how you are going to take your ‘products’ to market.

Treat employees with fairness

Integrity in everything you do, in other words, be honest, straightforward, and always do what you promised to do, whether it is to customers, employees or suppliers.

Motivating local entrepreneurs

Creativity, innovation and business savvy can be the ingredients to a successful business venture. As the recession lingers more and more people are trying their hand at business... doing it for themselves. Whether driven by need, a business idea, redundancy cash sat idle, or simply a personal ambition to work for yourself the recent economic climate has undoubtedly focused minds and jolted aspiring entrepreneurs into action. Having flair for business doesn’t necessarily mean establishing a multimillion pound industry: more and more people are turning small business ideas into reality.

Starting Out

Whatever your idea, you need to decide how to turn that idea into reality. You will need to consider what it is that makes your idea different from others (its unique selling point), and consider if there is a market or demand for your idea (‘your customers’). These are perhaps the most fundamental ingredients to a successful business venture. From here on in, it’s a question of how you deliver your idea to your customers – how will customers find out about you? Where do they contact you? Can you deliver what you say you can? Do you have time, resources and transport? The next step is to formulate your ideas into a business plan, and you will probably want to ‘test’ your idea (sounds great in theory, but in reality is there a demand?, and do the potential customers like what you are offering?). Scratch the surface of Nuneaton and Bedworth and you will find a thriving creative community – from pianists to fine art, we have a wealth of talent on our doorsteps. Creative industries are increasingly being recognised as vital to the health of the local economy – and according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) the industry provides two million jobs throughout the country and can boost the potential for local job and wealth creation, bolstering cultural visitor attractions and events, as well as enhancing our lives. Sally Higgins is an award winning artist, who has recently settled in Nuneaton with her husband to paint at her studio full time. Since 1995 Sally has exhibited in many group shows from London to Brighton, Amsterdam to Wellington.

Rough guide to the arts Nuneaton Festival of the Arts Investing in our local creative talent brings with it the power to attract visitors and encourage aspiring youngsters into creative action. As Picasso put it, “Every child is an artist. The challenge is to remain an artist after you grow up”. The Nuneaton Festival of the arts is a celebration of the arts including singing, dancing, instrument playing, speech, visual arts and many types of craft work. The festival is held every year and entries are encouraged from all cultures, ages and abilities and competitors have the benefit of comments from professional adjudicators. Public Art Toolkit Are you part of a community group who want to get involved in public art? A new Public Art Toolkit produced by the local Sub Regional Partnership for the Arts is available free from Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery. The toolkit covers everything you need to think about and even includes a case study from Camp Hill. Websites such as the Coventry and Warwickshire Society of Artists, the Warwickshire Artists and the Red Teapot web forum are evidence of the number of talented art practitioners local to Nuneaton and Bedworth. We asked Bedworth’s Dame Dotty Dimple how she will survive Christmas in Bedworth. Hello Readers, I was amazed to get a ‘phone call from no less than The Editor asking for my tips on how to survive Christmas in Bedworth. It’s so reassuring to know that my public recognise the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to create the magic which is pantomime and I have to admit that preparations are already well under way. It’s great to be returning to the Civic Hall in Bedworth as Dame Dotty Dimple in JACK AND THE BEANSTALK but it does mean that I’m already writing the lists, ordering things via the internet, undertaking countless visits to my dressmaker, Ernest (Dressmaker to the Stars with special rates for the residents of Stockingford). We have come up with a fantastic range of new frocks for the pantomime and we’re already in discussions with Primark for them to cheekily produce copies so that my public can join me in haute couture. We haven’t quite decided on this year’s colour scheme but we’re looking at mustard and yellow, or perhaps sky blue with a touch of blue sky. And I am also checking out the latest in make-up. Last year I discovered that you could get Polyfiller in bargain tubs round the corner from the Civic Hall so I am hoping it’s still on special offer, I’ve also been experimenting with those wonderful paste brushes for applying delicate amounts of black shellac. I just love pantomime but to survive 800 over-excited kiddies and their mummies 12 I CIVIC HALL

twice daily for a month takes quite a lot of preparation so I try to increase my water intake – extra icecubes in the gin – and more fruit – two slices of lemon instead of one. And I do try to swim a bit more but my new red swimming costume with matching hat seems to attract those wonderful lifeboat boys who think I am in distress and keep coming to rescue me. But getting back to how I survive Christmas. Surround yourself with a talented cast, wonderful musicians, fantastic stage crew and an audience wanting to join you in a totally magical make-believe world. Oh yes they do! 27th - 29th November The Civic Hall in Bedworth kicks off the annual Bedworth Folk Festival with a concert by Ralph McTell on Friday 27th November at 7.30pm tickets £17.50. REUSE & REDUCE The Christmas festive season is upon us and is a time of goodwill and celebration, and is often accompanied by seasonal increases in eating, drinking and spending. Unfortunately this will also result in a lot of waste. This year Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council are encouraging all residents to be aware of their waste, and reduce the amount that goes to landfill by recycling, reusing and reducing.

Try these top tips to help reduce your waste for Christmas 2009. Don’t forget what can go in your red box when the celebrations are over...glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, large biscuit and chocolate tins, and foil. Place all plastics in the orange recycling bag for your kerbside collection. This includes squash bottles, fizzy drink bottles, milk bottles, detergent bottles and rigid food containers. You can compost all your potato and sprout peelings at home. To order a subsidised compost bin from Warwickshire County Council please visit www.wcc.getcomposting.com or call 0845 1306090. Unfortunately the Council are unable to accept wrapping paper in the blue recycling bag. Why not try and keep it for next year and re use it. When you have finished with your Christmas tree, why not take it to the garden waste skip at Judkin’s Household Waste site? Or even chop it up and keep it in your green bin until the first collection in March 2010. All Christmas cards can be recycled in the yellow bag for cardboard on your weekly kerbside collection. Try and use re-usable batteries where possible, or recycle your old household batteries in your red box or at Judkin’s Household Waste Site.

Hayley, aged 20 lives in Chapel End, Nuneaton with her parents and two sisters – Shawney and Kerry. Hayley’s dad coaches her and now younger sister, Kerry is getting a taste for it too. With the 2012 Olympics in her sight, Hayley is undergoing an intense training regime of four days per week at the Athletics Track in Tamworth, to become the best in her field. Hayley’s passion for athletics started whilst she was at primary school where she enjoyed distance and sprint, high jump, then discus and finally the hammer. Hayley said: “I worked my way through them all and then found that the hammer was the area that I was really good at.”

Opened in 2008 after a 2 year renovation project - the 1926 building is a beautiful example of the Art Deco period with interiors that have been wonderfully redesigned by the hilariously foppish TV interior designer Laurence LLewelynBowen. Since its re-opening it has seen high profile gigs by Razorlight, The Kooks, and Pete Doherty.

Pete Doherty, an ex-Nicholas Chambelaine pupil – who left the Bedworth school with 11 top GCSEs, 5 of which were A* grades – arrived back in Warwickshire to a nutty screaming girls welcome, with the ex Libertine and current Babyshambles frontman playing a fantastic show to a buoyant “packed to the rafters” crowd.

The Assembly certainly gets the thumbs-up for all your local gig needs; big names, 1,500 capacity, two main bars, and best of all – a short journey home!

His performance was filled with songs from Babyshambles, the Libertines, and from his recent solo album Grace/Wastelands, with Pete (and his band) performing the songs with passion, zip, and gusto. The highlights being a mass sing-a-long during For Lovers and the rambunctious Time For Heroes for the rip-roaring finale.

Serves: 4 Cooking time: 20 minutes Rare: allow 20 minutes per 450g plus 25 minutes plus 450g per Medium: allow 25 minutes o o F 350 C, 180 4-5, k Mar Temperature: Gas Ingredients: 2 Lean racks Scotch Lamb

Scotch Lamb Moussaka Serves: 4-6 Cooking time: Temperature: Gas Mark 4-5, 180oC, 350oF Approx 40 minutes Ingredients: 675g Scotch Lamb mince 1 onion 1 garlic clove 45ml tomato puree 30ml mint jelly 2 aubergines 75g Feta cheese 500g Greek yogurt 2 eggs

Stuffing: 12g butter 1 onion, finely chopped 100g couscous 1 orange, rind and juice 15ml fresh thyme leaves Glaze: 1 large orange, rind and juice Fresh thyme 30ml clear honey Orange and Thyme Carrots: thways 3 carrots, peeled and cut in half leng Juice of 1 orange 2 sprigs fresh thyme Seasoning Cooking instructions: cook onion until Heat the butter in small saucepan and l and pour over 240ml bow softened. Cooking instructions: In a non-stick pan dry fry the lean lamb mince for 4-5 minutes with 1 onion, chopped and 1 clove garli c, crushed. Add tomato puree and mint jelly. Season with salt and pepper and cook

for 2-3 minutes.

Meanwhile thinly slice 2 aubergines and lightly brown on both sides in a hot frying pan (you migh t have to do this in 2 or 3 batches). Place half the mince mixture into an ovenproof dish and top with some of the aubergine slices. Crum ble over Feta cheese and cover with the rest of the mince and the remaining aubergine. Mix together 500g pot Greek yogurt with 2 eggs and pour over the aubergines. Bake in a preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. We wear a silly Christmas hat; the best was a Rudolph hat. I wore it everywhere, even Harrods. I’ve already got this year’s – it plays tunes. We love Christmas and always get into the spirit. Julie Salmon I’ve got my first Grandchild arriving next year so next Christmas will be extra special. I work in a care home and we have a lovely time making it special for the residents. Everyone wants a beautiful home at Christmas with lots of lovely food and decorations but not everyone can afford it. Let’s face it, Christmas is expensive. Here are some tips on how to create that sumptuous feel at a fraction of the cost. Silver paint can transform the simplist greenery such as ivy, which is tough enough to stand the 12 days of Christmas without shrivelling. Add some pieces with berries (they make ivy particularly beautiful at this time of the year). Spread the ivy out on newspaper and spray it on both sides. You can use the ivy bunched in long trails to make swags hanging down either side of a fireplace, or hang them from the Christmas Tree. If you have a real Christmas tree, cut off some of the lower branches, sit them on the mantle piece, then set a few large baubles among them for a suitably sumptuous feel. Brightly coloured paper chains will keep the childrens fingers busy and they can decorate their bedroom. Christmas Wreaths are an old Christmas tradition that is used to decorate the outside of the house, typically on the front door, to give Christmas time visitors a festive greeting. To make your own you will need a wreath ring, florist wire (you can get these cheaply from a local florist).

If you want to be 100 per cent homegrown, make your own base by twisting vine prunings round in a circle. Sprayed silver, red or gold, these vine/ creeper garlands make excellent starting points. Collect evergreens, Ivy and Loral leaves are good. Some leaves are a silvery grey; these add a frosty feeling to the wreath. Twist bright ribbon round it, if you like, before attaching silver-dried seedpods such as poppies, teasels and pinecones.

Christmas is a time of year when we’re more likely to use more energy in our homes than at other times – but it doesn’t have to be that way. • Turn your Christmas lights off during the day and when you go to bed • If your Christmas lights are on, turn off your main room lights • Extra activity and people in your home will mean it is easier to keep warm – turn your thermostat down a degree or two • Turn your heating off when you’re cooking the Christmas dinner – heat from the kitchen will keep surrounding areas warm.

Or why not bypass traditional colours this holiday and design a wreath that complements your decor. Hot glue pinecones to a grapevine base; let dry. Paint the wreath in a hue that coordinates with your room; allow to dry. Using a clean brush, dab glue on pinecones and sprinkle with glitter; let set. Display the wreath on a wall.

Word of Bedworth Cake Shop is spreading, and the proof is in the pudding – or cake, if you please. The confectionary haven produces a staggering 350 to 400 birthday cakes per week and around 400 wedding cakes each year. All beautifully styled, immaculately executed and each masterpiece is made to order.

The Business started in 1983 when two brothers Andy and Lee Whitehead opened a cake shop just yards away from the present site. Lee enthused: “Our customers know about us through family and friends – it’s all mainly word of mouth. It is amazing and humbling that our regulars keep coming back, they say ‘we can’t get anything that matches your cakes anywhere else’.

“We now find that more orders are booked from up and down the country. I had an order from Hemel Hampstead just this morning. We have a skilled staff team of 8-10 both part and full time. The business is on the up and up.”

All of the celebration cakes are made on the premises from the highest quality fresh ingredients by highly trained confectioner, Tim Blissett and decorated under the watchful eye of the brothers and their sister Jude Reader, who controls the Finishing room and ensures that all of the cakes leaving the shop are to our high standard. Both Tim and Jude have worked with the brothers for over twenty years so the high standards are assured.

The brothers are fifth generation bakers, with their Grandfather John Gilbert operating a family bakery in Bedworth since 1920 for many years. The brothers decided to go it alone and opened the cake shop which specialised in celebration cakes. Customer demand ensured that other confectionary was also made and as the business rapidly grew a bakery was purchased in 1985.

Andy Whitehead specialises in Chocolate wedding cakes and is forever creating another mouth watering chocolate delight. A visit to the shop will amaze people with the constant display of celebration cakes and fairytale wedding cakes, along with all the things you need to make your own masterpiece.

That was followed by four more shops which supplied the local area with bread, confectionary and celebration cakes until 1999 when it was decided to sell off the bakery and shops to concentrate on the original Celebration cake side of the business. By now the Cake shop had moved to its present premises and in 2003 doubled in size to become one of the largest celebration cake bakeries in the Midlands.
