The Mystery of Rick Scott

Equality leaders ‘wait and see’ where Florida’s new gov. stands on equality steve blanchard

E

ven with him seated firmly in the executive offices of Tallahassee, there is still a cloud of mystery surrounding Rick Scott—especially pertaining to his views of LGBT residents living in the state. The new Republican governor has never shown support for LGBT issues and while campaigning he used antiLGBT rhetoric in both the primary and general election seasons. He even went as far as to attack former State Attorney General and one-time gubernatorial candidate Bill McCollum for his ties to “pro-homosexual rights” presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani. He also said he favored continuing Florida’s now-dead law that banned gays and lesbians from adopting children. So it’s safe to say that many LGBTs are at least somewhat apprehensive when

it comes to Florida’s new leadership. But, there is reason to be cautiously optimistic as well, according to Nadine Smith, Equality Florida’s executive director. “We are making no assumptions,” Smith says of Scott’s views of LGBT people. “We’re reaching out to the administration. I think he’s made a priority off—and he campaigned on—the promise of creating and retaining jobs in Florida. We believe there’s an opportunity to build bipartisan support there.” Many raised their eyebrows when Scott signed a narrow non-discrimination executive order that did not extend protections based on sexual orientation or gender identity. It also neglected to include protections on handicaps and marital status. Rand Hoch, president of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council,

told the Huffington Post that the move was disappointing. “Governor Scott’s limited view of diversity is very discouraging,” Hoch says. “Governor Scott did not even include all of the classifications listed in the Florida Civil Rights Act—let alone sexual orientation and gender identity.” But the fight to get those protections isn’t over. In fact, it’s just beginning, according to Smith. “Major employers in our state believe it creates competitiveness to have these protections,” Smith says. “I know there are people close to the governor communicating that message to him as well. We’ll make no assumptions about this administration. We will continue to reach out and see where we are over time. Continued on page 19 | uu |

Comm. Stewart receives Harvey Milk Award

Orlando | Former Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart has been given the Harvey Milk Foundation Honors medal, an honor presented by the Harvey B. Milk Foundation. Stewart was awarded her medal at a cocktail reception in honor of Stewart and Bill Segal, for their pro-LGBT actions while they held their seats on the Orange County Commission. The event was held Jan. 6. “Harvey Milk felt passionately that the

Orlando | On Jan. 17, communities around the nation celebrated the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, organizers at Rollins College expanded the message of rights for all people by choosing keynote speaker Nadine Smith, an AfricanAmerican LGBT leader nationally recognized for her nearly two decades of work. “I was raised here in Florida, in the panhandle,” Smith told the capacity crowd at the college’s Knowles Chapel of her unique understanding of the state she also works in. Smith is one of the nation’s leading LGBT activists, co-chairing the famous 1993 March on Washington and meeting with President Bill Clinton. Since the inception of Equality Florida in 1997, she has served as executive director. “My father and many of his friends and associates worked directly with King. So I approach the subject of King not just as a brilliant leader, which he was; I primarily look at him as a simple human being, who was often scared of the mantle of leadership.” Smith, 45, shared her own stories of fear,

starting when she was a college student just starting her career in activism. She also talked of her strengthening connection to King’s family; she reached out to King’s widow Coretta Scott in the 1990s when anti-gay initiatives were first cropping up in local and national politics. “People were outraged, saying that King would’ve never stood for having his name lumped in with lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders… Coretta Scott set the record straight,” Smith says. In a letter, Coretta Scott King said, “Like Martin, I don’t believe you can stand for freedom for one group of people and deny it to others.” “It’s important to remember, especially in recent times when rhetoric can enflame us…that’s King’s message was one of love, the power of love in the face of adversity,” Smith said. Toward the end of her address, Smith again quoted King; three other speakers at the Rollins College event also evoked the same words: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” | l |

St. Petersburg | In her 25 years as a gender therapist, Dr. Kathleen Ferrell has seen a lot of changes in the way the world views transgender individuals. But one thing she may not have seen is the direct and powerful impact she’s had on the T-community. But in December, during a special celebration honoring the career of Ferrell, she heard first-hand how influential she has been during her quarter-century of service. Patients spoke about their experiences with Farrell— including her creation of a free group therapy session that was recently passed onto Dr. Tristan Byrnes. “Those therapy groups emerged as part of my practice,” Ferrell remembered. “There were no support groups in the Tampa Bay area back then. I did not facilitate that first group, I only started it.” And what she started changed the lives of countless transgender people in Tampa Bay and beyond. Many stood during the celebration to thank Ferrell for her guidance during the complex and often difficult transition from one gender to the other. Ferrell said she was overcome by the love and support of the T community showed during the celebration. “I was quite emotional,” Ferrell said. “I was very grateful that I could be present when I was eulogized—most people don’t get that opportunity. The individuals I’ve worked with over the years are amazing people because of course gender change is the Everest of human change. I think that they are just incredible people and in the face of a lot of obstacles in society, careers, in their families, they have persevered and they are just incredible.” Since she began her practice 25 years ago, Ferrell has seen options open up to the transgender community and she credits those advances to education and the fostering of an understanding of what it means to be transgender. Society as a whole is becoming educated

on the subject and the gay and lesbian community has become more embracing of transgender people, she said. “Embracing really is the key word here,” Ferrell said. “We are grateful that the gay and lesbian community has embraced the trans community so much.” While Ferrell has passed the therapy group onto Byrnes, she said she plans to continue her practice, but she is focused more now on transgender youth and their families. More and more children are coming out as transgender—much like gay and lesbian children are doing. Ferrell wants to be there to help. “I am continuing to work with one family in particular whose child went from being a 7-year-old-male in second grade to a female attending the third grade in the same school,” Ferrell said. “I feel I have the education and expertise to work with these families who are experiencing this situation with their children.” The confidence in which children are coming out—whether as transgender or gay or lesbian—is based in the educational opportunities that are now available, Ferrell believes. That, in turn, has helped more transgender people counter the effects of puberty, thus making the transition into a more comfortable adulthood easier. Ferrell is not leaving her older patients behind, however. She still has a full client list and will continue to practice for as long as she is able. She is excited about passing the torch onto a younger doctor. “I have a really, very staunch philosophy about those of us older in the community moving on to make room for younger people to join the workforce and offer their contributions,” Ferrell said. “Dr. Byrnes is a talented doctor who just finished his Masters Degree. He will be an asset to the community.” For more information on Byrnes and the therapy groups, call 813-919-6185 or e-mail TWolfeByrnes@gmail.com. Tampa’s six mayoral candidate speak at GaYbor meeting staff report Tampa | The January GaYbor Coalition meeting was packed, which was to be expected since six viable candidates to become Tampa’s next mayor were in attendance. All six accepted invitations to speak to the LGBT coalition at the Metro Wellness Community Center on 7th Avenue Jan. 14, and each were given five minutes to speak directly to those in attendance. One of the more popular candidates appeared to be Rose Ferlita, who is a former city councilwoman and the only woman running for the position to be vacated by Pam Iorio in March. She seemed to receive the most applause when she was introduced. She spoke mostly about bringing business to Tampa and that “as Rose Ferlita being your mayor, the City of Tampa will be out of the business of red tape.” Ferlita has a long history of supporting the LGBT community. However, it was Ed Turanchik who was the only candidate to directly acknowledge that his audience was mostly LGBT residents. He shared that he was proud of his vote 20 years ago to “make Hillsborough County the first county

in this part of the state to say it’s illegal to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation.” Also in attendance was Bob Buckhorn, who said that Tampa is losing too many residents to other cities—namely Raleigh-Durham and Austin, Tex. He talked about creating more opportunities for “best and brightest” among Tampa’s residents. Current City Council chairman Thomas Scott spoke about governing from the heart and that a mayor must help people find solutions to problems, adding that “I will be the best mayor you ever will elect in the state of Florida.” Former Mayor Dick Greco also spoke briefly, congratulating the GaYbor business district’s success and sharing details about his role in bringing Centro Ybor to fruition. The 77-year-old guaranteed that “whatever time” he has left will be dedicated to the City of Tampa. And finally, a candidate who is virtually an unknown addressed the coalition. Arthur Richardson focused on Tampa’s economy, speaking about improving Tampa’s infrastructure and protecting families from crime. | l |

Gasparilla gets gay infusion with El Gancho steve blanchard Tampa | For more than a century the City of Tampa has celebrated Gasparilla, a celebration of the city’s pirate heritage. Parades, a yearly “attack” and revelry have turned the last weekend of January into one of the city’s largest party weekends. Now, that weekend is about to get a whole lot gayer, thanks to four Ybor City residents introducing a “circuit party light” weekend of events. The main event, featuring DJ Abel, is the El Gancho Party on Saturday, Jan., 29 from 10 p.m.-3 a.m. at the Historic Ritz Ybor Theater. But the night before, on Friday Jan. 28, Gancho Tampa takes over the Castle in Ybor with a fetish-themed party dubbed “Whips & Chains.” That party also runs 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. “This is something we’ve thought about doing for awhile,” said Tony LaColla, one of the organizers. LaColla said that pairing the event with Gasparilla Weekend was not an accident. “Because of the large number of people coming to the Tampa Bay area already, we decided the timing was perfect,” LaColla said. So far there has been no resistance to “gaying up” the festive weekend and LaColla said that the City of Tampa and the Ybor City District Coalition has provided assistance where it can. Most pre-sold tickets are from the Orlando area and Atlanta, according to LaColla.

“Atlanta has been our biggest market,” LaColla said. “I know we’ll have a lot of locals and the Orlando community seems very interested as well, based on early numbers. Friday’s Whips Miami-based DJ Abel will spin during the El Gancho & Chains Party Party on Saturday, Jan. 29, at at the castle, he The Ritz Ybor in conjunction says, could sell out with the Gasparilla Weekend at 1,000 tickets. celebration. | Photo courtesy Liz Liguori He expects the El Gancho party Saturday at The Ritz Ybor to pack nearly 800 people into the newly renovated theater. “It makes sense to hold that party at The Ritz Ybor,” LaColla said. “There’s such good energy there and it’s a spectacular building. You don’t need decorations to improve it and once you walk through the doors you know you’re in a special place.” A portion of the ticket sales to Saturday’s party will benefit the Metro Wellness and Community Centers, which are based in Tampa and St. Petersburg. Tickets are $20 for the Fetish Party on Friday and $45 for Saturday’s El Gancho Party when purchased online at GanchoTampa.com. Tickets are $10 more at the door. | l |

Rev. Gene Robinson to speak at St. Boniface steve blanchard THE DESTINATION FOR CONTEMPORARY THEATRE

Sarasota | St. Boniface Episcopal Church has secured the highly-sought after Rev. Gene Robinson as its speaker for its popular Boniface Center Series on Jan. 29. The first openly-gay bishop in the Episcopal Church has been mired in controversy since his election in 2003. Robinson has been in wide demand since his election and has toured the country speaking at different events and churches. Fortunately for St. Boniface, it had a specific connection to the New Hampshire-based clergyman. “Bishop Robinson’s visit has been in the works for several years, and we are grateful to the Rev. Wesley Wasdyke for making the connections to bring this about,” the church posted on its website. “Wes’ home diocese is New Hampshire and for many years he and Cindy have shared their lives with communities in Sarasota and Manchester, New Hampshire. This made it a natural for us to invite Bishop Robinson to be our speaker.” The church initially invited Robinson to speak at the Sarasota church in 2007, but had postponed for a number of reasons. The church posted that the four-year wait has created a “wonderful story of ecclesiastical

politics, grace and reconciliation.” Robinson is expected to speak about how to remain focused and centered in the midst of controversy, a practice with which the bishop is extremely familiar. When Robinson was nominated to become a bishop, conservatives and liberals argued whether he should be allowed to become a bishop because of his sexuality. Several conservative factions threatened a schism within both the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion—and followed through on those threats when he was confirmed. During his visit to Sarasota, Robinson will also talk about remaining committed to friends, family and faith while taking on the demanding stresses of a busy life. St. Boniface will welcome Robinson with an invitation-only dinner on Saturday, Jan. 29. The public is invited to hear Robinson speak at the church on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 9 a.m., 10:15 a.m., and 5 p.m. A luncheon scheduled at 12:30 p.m. requires a ticket to attend. For more information on St. Boniface and Robinson’s appearances, visit BonifaceChurch.org. | l |

Two Fla. universities get part of $4.7 million for HIV study wire report Two Florida universities and one in California have been awarded a $4.7 million grant to study the connection between marijuana use and HIV infections in adolescents. Earlier this month, it was announced that the National Institutes of Health awarded the funds to the University of Florida, the University of South Florida and the

University of California, San Diego. The five-year study may help experts identify how substance abuse changes the immune function and progression of HIV in the brain. It may also provide evidence to support behavioral guidelines for HIV-infected adolescents. Experts say the study could possibly create better ways of diagnosing adolescents with HIV and new therapies in the future. | l |

Man charged in deaths of neighbor, mechanic wire report A 21-year-old is accused of killing his neighbor and a mechanic because he thought they made homosexual advances toward him. Matthew E. Guzman was arrested Jan. 2 on burglary charges and charged a day later with two counts of first-degree murder. He is being held without bail in a Miami-Dade County jail. Guzman is accused of shooting 46-

year-old Paul Barrow in the head Dec. 16 at his auto store. Police say Guzman thought Barrow had looked at him in an “inappropriate manner.’’ He is also suspected of killing 64-yearold Harry Ray on Nov. 18. Police say Guzman knocked on Ray’s door, asked to use the bathroom, then shot Ray several times. Police say Guzman thought Ray had made homosexual advances that left him “no choice but to shoot the victim.” | l |

ADAP gets big boost richard gary Patients waiting for life-saving AIDS drugs in Florida got a shot in the arm Jan. 3 when the AIDS Healthcare Foundation announced that it will supply up to $1 million in free AIDS drugs to those cancelled and wait-listed by state cutbacks to the ADAP program. AHF, through its AHF Pharmacy, will supply listed HIV/AIDS patients on medication therapy as those patients wait for their medications to be delivered from private patient assistance programs. This will avoid any interruption in lifesaving medication therapy while patients transition

onto patient assistance programs. “We hope to help ease the state’s AIDS drug crisis and get vulnerable Florida AIDS patients back on to lifesaving antiretroviral treatment,” said Michael Weinstein, the President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation. The AIDS Drug Assistance Program is a Federal/State program that pays for life-saving AIDS drugs for low-income Americans. Nationwide, ADAPs serve more than 165,000 people, accounting for one third of people on AIDS treatment in the U.S. | l | Editor’s note: Richard Gary is a reporter with the South Florida Gay News and this article is used with permission.

Justice Dept. outlines defense of US marriage law wire report Boston, Mass. | The U.S. Department of Justice has filed its opening legal brief for its appeal of a decision by a judge in Massachusetts who concluded that a portion of a federal law banning recognition of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. The appeal follows two rulings in July by U.S. District Judge Joseph Tauro, who said the federal Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional because it interferes with

a state’s right to define marriage and denies married gay couples an array of federal benefits given to heterosexual married couples. The Justice Department argued in a brief filed on Jan. 13 that the law was Congress’ “reasonable response” to a debate among the states on same-sex marriage. In its brief, the Justice Department said the federal government has the right to define marriage differently than individual states. The appeal is expected to be heard by the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. | l |

Hernandez hailed as hero

wire report

Tucson, Ariz. | Daniel Hernandez Jr., the openly gay intern who ran to the rescue of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords during the Jan. 8 shooting in Tucson, was seated next to President Obama last week during a memorial for the victims of that shooting. President Obama and others repeated referred to Hernandez as a “hero,” but Hernandez himself urged that the title belongs not to him, but to Giffords and other public servants. “Though I appreciate the sentiment, I

must humbly reject the use of the word hero because I am not one,” said Hernandez. “The people who are the heroes,” he said, were Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, members of her staff, the first responders to the shooting, and the doctors caring for Giffords. “We have all come together to realize that what defines us is not the differences,” said Hernandez. “It is that we are all together, we are all a family, we are all Americans.” “Daniel, I’m sorry, you may deny it, but we’ve decided you are a hero,” said President Obama during his remarks. He was interrupted by applause. “You ran through the chaos to minister to your boss and tended to her wounds and helped keep her alive.” Hernandez, 20, is a student at the University of Arizona but began working as an intern in Giffords’ Tucson office on January 3. He ran toward Giffords when the shooting broke out and, once he saw her head wound, used his hand to apply pressure to curb the bleeding and held her upright to prevent her from choking on the blood. Doctors have credited Hernandez’s quick response with having saved Giffords’ life. Besides interning for Giffords, Hernandez was appointed as a commissioner at large to the City of Tucson Commission on Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender Issues. He plans to help the organization with education outreach on issues such as bullying. | l |

But we want to give this administration the opportunity to do what’s right.” Equality Florida and other groups are paying close attention to the Competitive Workforce Act, filed by Sen. Nan Rich. If passed, that act would include protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity and could influence more companies to relocate to Florida, thus boosting the economy. “Gov. Scott says his focus is on creating jobs in Florida—this is a step toward ensuring that happens,” Smith says. “The bottom line is this: Florida’s failure to have these protections negatively impacts its reputation nationally and internationally as a place to live, work or visit. People are waking up to that understanding and it hurts our universities and the ability to draw the best and brightest faculty and students to our state.” Florida lags behind portions of the country that have such protections, including California and several western states and the northeast seaboard. “In terms of when Florida is competing for high-tech jobs, the places drawing those companies are places with these protections,” Smith says. “A company’s decision may not wholly depend on whether a state has all-inclusive protections, but it is a large part of their decision-making matrix.” Smith adds that an inclusive company that protects all of its employees doesn’t want its workers protected only on the job site but not when they leave the building to go to lunch. C

Adopt a legislator While Florida’s new governor is still feeling out his new position, Smith says that other new legislators also need to be reminded of the needs of the LGBT community. A large freshman class has filled the senate in 2011. “Tallahassee is far away and it’s easy for our representatives and senators— when they get there—to forget about the promises that got them there,” Smith says. “So we make a trek to Tallahassee often to remind them of those promises and those commitments.” Equality Florida has started a brand new campaign to ensure that legislators don’t forget about LGBT issues. Its “Adopt a Legislator” program began this month and encourages volunteers to stay in constant contact with lawmakers. It also means paying attention to the news and keeping tabs on the votes cast by him or her on all issues—but especially LGBTcentric ones. “Lobbying matters and it has helped make steady progress as we continue to push for statewide change,” Smith says. “We make personal connections and have frank conversations with legislators who M

Most people that work for Disney don’t live in Orlando, they live more in the Lake Buena Vista, kissimee, Davenport, etc. I would say that Disney definitely contributes to making Orlando a top 10, but certainly not the definite top of the list.”

returned to my life in Florida, she e-mailed me a well-intentioned but inaccurate newspaper column that she had written about my mother’s death. Because the column appeared online, my family read it and the inaccuracies might have caused a small scandal if we hadn’t all been so busy trying to glue back together the shattered, grief-soaked pieces of our lives. From 1,200 miles apart, Maggie’s and my friendship continued, now bonded by a Living missing mother. Her mom was physically and grieving present but her mind was lost. My mom was just gone. A few years later, Maggie moved to Palm Springs, Calif., and something changed. We’d been competitive, but it always felt healthy, like we were pushing each other to be our best. Her forum postings began to take on a nastier tone and the competition became relentless. Desperate to escape this pattern, I attempted to reach out to Maggie but naturally, our interactions continued to happen online, where tone and nuance become lost in the stark bareness of plain text. And Lord knows I was no angel in this situation. I assumed she wanted a similar timeout, as we ceased contact but were able to passively follow each other’s lives on blogs and Facebook, if we wanted. Six months later, photos of Maggie’s wedding appeared on Facebook. I hadn’t been invited. I hadn’t even been told. I had to find out online. Her phone number had changed and I didn’t have the information necessary to send flowers. Did I dare reach out online, through the same channels we used to destroy our friendship a year ago? It didn’t feel right, but doing nothing felt dead wrong. So this morning, I opened a fresh message, took a deep breath and started to type. I hope the online tools that had the power to crack a friendship in half also have the power to comfort and heal. | l |

O

n Monday, Jan. 24, the third season of LOGO's hit RuPaul’s Drag Race exits the gate at full speed, and it’s running on some seriously premium fuel this year: fiercer contestants including St. Petersburg’s own Alexis Mateo (see pg.37); more elaborate challenges; higher profile guest judges including LaToya Jackson, Sharon Osbourne, Lily Tomlin, Margaret Cho and Chloe Sevigny; and a game-changing surprise to be unveiled in the 90minute premiere episode. Yet again ruling the proceedings both in and out of drag, RuPaul—who will release a new album this spring— dished about contestants old and new, the effects of sleep deprivation on drag queens (hint: emotional breakdowns), and what else is in the works. WATERMARK: What do you make of season three’s group of contestants and how do they differ from their predecessors? RUPAUL: The honest to God truth, they’re so much more skilled, and also on an even-keeled level. These kids came with their A-game like I’ve never seen before. I don’t know if it’s our casting or what’s happening with the girls out there since the show debuted, but these kids are skilled. And the bonds they forged early on with each other is probably the most amazing element. And what about Florida’s Alexis Mateo? Continued on page 36 | uu |

and abuses his right-hand man Kato (Chou). Rogen is funny, but his long comic rants seem like he was allowed to goof around without an editor. Sadly, this leeway creates a juvenile, uninteresting character. That being said, Waltz is a funny selfdoubting villain. Also, the flick’s special effects sequences are messy and unrealistic, the fight scenes are stupid and joyful, and the car chases are delightfully far-fetched. Watch The Green Hornet for the action; when Rogen starts his standup, go get popcorn. | l |

t’s strange to think that so much faith was once put into the vocal abilities of heads of state. If a ruler didn’t have a radio voice, the country was doomed. It’s the same today with well-spoken, TV-friendly politicians, though. Firth expertly plays the man who took the throne as King George VI when his brother abdicated to wed an American divorcee. The problem was that WWII was looming, and King George had a painful, embarrassing stammer. In comes and unorthodox Australian speech therapist, Rush, to fix the king in the same way Dr. Willis fixed the crazed King George III of lunacy in the late 1700s. In perfect Merchant-Ivory style, director Tom Hooper counters the narrow, high domiciles of the Royal Court with the scrubby, decomposing flats of the poor therapist. All three leads give outstanding performances, but Firth shines with his silences, a skill that got him nominated for last year’s A Single Man. The King’s Speech is a The Green Hornet charming film, even if it (Starring Seth Rogen, Jay expertly skims over world Chou, Christophe Waltz, events to concentrate on the Cameron Diaz. So, there are affairs all over the ol’ homestead! There’s also drinking and drugging, infidelities and heartache. All that’s missing in this boot-scootin’ melodrama is a truck getting repossessed and a dog running away. And it lacks a succinct plot and interesting people—those little nuggets. Despite the hammy story, the music is pretty, if not spectacular. All three singers have great voices. Hedlund is especially charming, with his big blue eyes, his rich baritone and his sexy swagger. A subtler, less exaggerated plot would have saved this flick. Instead, we’re set adrift in a thematic mash-up of every wince-inducing country song ever crooned. ampa | It’s not every day that a fictional story taking place in an alternate reality can be considered relevant to the here and now. But that’s exactly how director Chad Smith feels about M.A.D. Theatre’s production of Zanna, Don’t, playing at the Hillsborough Community College Studio Theatre in Ybor City. “I honestly wasn’t familiar with the script before the directing position was offered to me,” Smith says. “But I researched it and immediately fell in love with it” Zanna, Don’t is a musical comedy that takes place in a high school in a universe where homosexuality is the norm and heterosexual people are minorities. The main character, Zanna, has magic power that helps influence love connections. When a heterosexual relationship blossoms in the school, the entire town is up in arms over the “immoral behavior.” “I think good art should reflect the now in society,” Smith says, “especially considering the recent rash of suicides affecting gay youth. When you take a show that deals with bullying and coming to terms with you are, but that also teaches tolerance, that needs to be said right now!” The production, which opens Thursday, Jan. 13 and runs through Jan. 23, features a cast of nine actors from all walks of life and all ages. That diversity was more of a pleasantry than a challenge for the director, who says that Zanna, Don’t is his first full-length directing job. “Theater people are crazy and we’re lucky that our cast is full of such an amazing, energetic group of people,” Smith says, “but we do have to handle the

show delicately because we’re dealing with serious subject matter in a lighthearted way. It’s written very cleverly. There’s a lot of slapstick and we’ve found the balance between stereotypes and reality.” Creating an alternate universe where heterosexuality is considered taboo wasn’t Local actor Ricky Cona stars as “Zanna” in M.A.D. ome people had a hard time sitting through The A-List: New York, Logo’s tawdry teledoc about a gay gaggle that got eye-roll reactions from viewers who couldn’t completely look away. Imagine starring in it. Reichen Lehmkuhl, who became the show’s punching bag for nasty names, looks back with regret that you didn’t see him like you should have. But he’s learned to get on with his life and focus his attention on the future—one that includes a film based on his first book (a follow-up to 2006’s Here’s What We’ll Say: Growing Up, Coming Out, and the U.S. Air Force is in the works) and exploring other avenues of his bottomless ambition as a political activist, model, musician and jeweler. Seriously: he has his own line. In a recent chat with Lehmkuhl, the 37year-old got personal about his hurt feelings, how the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” affected him, his book-turned-movie, and his take on ex-boyfriend Lance Bass seemingly copying his career. WATERMARK: You were called lots of nasty names for your behavior on The AList: New York. How do you feel about the way Logo cast you? REICHEN LEHMKUHL: It hurts. If it didn’t hurt, I think there’d be something wrong with me. I see myself differently. When I look at my life I see myself being raised in a trailer park and breaking into a successful military career, serving my country and graduating from the Air Force Academy. After getting out and writing a book that sticks up for our entire community and cries out for help from everyone to get rid of a policy that’s going to help a lot of other anti-gay policies fall, to see anyone in the community turn around and call me a douche bag, it just makes me say, “Wow.” I watch A-List with different eyes, I’m sure. I guess if

Maybe if I’m invited I’ll go see it. I mean, I’m not against it. I have no ill will toward him. But didn’t you at one point? I think when people break up they break up for a reason. Usually those reasons are confined to personal space, and we were in a more public situation—so things got out and made it look like more than it was. Our relationship was a couple of months, and it was so long ago. A-List made it look like we just dated; it’s ridiculous. That’s ancient history. | l |

Alexis, this was her third time auditioning. I remembered her from the first and second season and she finally made it this season. A lot of the girls have auditioned more than once. Finally, this time around she got it. Yet again the first challenge is a photo shoot with Mike Ruiz. Do you forgive Mike Ruiz for his ridiculous hair in ‘A-list’? It looked like a bowl of lubed squid ink pasta. (Laughs) I’ve heard people talk about it. But I don’t know because I’ve never seen it. That’s funny!” Can you share a behind the scenes factoid about season three that may enhance our viewing experience? Well, we’re working on so little sleep, the schedule is so fast because we’re basically shooting every day. It’s tough, grueling. So these kids come on the show and think, ‘I’m fierce and bad,’ but can you do it day-in, dayout, for 15-hours per day? It may look like everyone’s relaxed, but nobody’s getting any sleep at all.

you typically respond to it? They definitely break down because of sleep deprivation. Emotions are very fragile because they’re in a new environment, we’re putting them through the paces, and I have to give them pep talks from time to time: this is your opportunity, the world is watching. You can’t say, oh, I feel like I didn’t get my chance. Well kiddo, you are on now. You are on. There are no second chances—you have to bring it. Maybe you’ll get another chance somewhere else, but it’s time now.” How much do you miss saying ‘Pan-dor-a Boxx?’ I miss [all the former contestants], actually, because even before they’re on the show, we’re living with audition tapes. We’re moving around who will work with whom. It’s a lot like casting a play, we have to have the sassy one, the ingénue, the sweet one, and sometimes the person in the role of the sweet one gets swapped out for someone else who works better in the ensemble, so we are actually living and loving and feeling these girls way before they even get to Hollywood and then when they’re dismissed it’s heartbreaking to me. But I also know that they will come back. In some other form or show that we do, on the club circuit. I will see them again.

One typically isn’t very detail-oriented when sleep deprived, correct? ALL ABOUT ALEXIS Lawrence Ferber

St. Petersburg queen Alexis Mateo talks about her Drag Race experience

orn and raised in Puerto Rico, season three contestant Alexis Mateo moved to Florida in 2001. Winner of numerous Florida pageants and titles, she’s worked as a cast member at Orlando’s Walt Disney World and, during the year prior to its closure, St. Petersburg’s Suncoast Resort. Currently based in St. Pete, Alexis performs regularly at Georgie’s Alibi. Check out her full schedule of appearances at AlexisMateo.com. Sweet, upbeat, energetic and enthusiastic, Alexis shared her thoughts about being on the show, the Tampa Bay drag scene, Florida’s notoriously non-sweet/upbeat/energetic season two winner Tyra Sanchez, and, of course, RuPaul. WATERMARK: What do you think of the local drag scene? ALEXIS MATEO: It’s good right now and I feel comfortable with myself and am having a blast. But it was not easy at [first] because there are a lot of transsexuals I have to compete with because we have a lot of diversity. In my area you have it all. You have club kids, transsexuals, boy queens like me, dancers, actors, comedy queens. You have it all. If you have the chance to come and see a show you will get a full package because the shows are designed to entertain more than one person. Everywhere you go in Tampa Bay you will have a great show. Why did you audition? The first time I saw the show I was like, oh my god, this is new, fresh and totally me. I saw the season one pilot and it was amazing. I mean, drag for me is everything. What was the reaction like within the local drag scene when you got cast? Supportive or bitter and jealous? Everybody was really excited. When they saw I was cast, they all called me. I’m loving it because a lot of people still don’t know, and when they find out they call and send email and I’m feeling the support of my sisters in the Tampa Bay area. Did you ever get to meet previous Drag Race contestants and discuss the show with them before you were on?

I did meet Shannel from season one. She came to George’s Alibi. It was not like a meeting where we could sit and talk about the whole process, but more like, ‘I saw you personally and it’s nice meeting you.’ It was a short moment but a great experience. How did RuPaul measure up to expectations in person? RuPaul is crazy, I love it! An amazing person. When I was little, before I was the age where I could explore gay life, all I can remember is RuPaul. That’s all we see as a drag queen in Puerto Rico. To see him in front of me is out of this world. He’s very professional, he’s a businessman and talented. Everything I was expecting RuPaul to be, he is.

I had it all. There’s a reason why I made the show and do the things I do and I’m really happy and proud of myself.

What did you learn about yourself from this Drag Race experience? I learned that I can be whatever I want, and I should not be second guessing myself, because

And what will you do if you win? Probably pass out. I’ll probably cry and laugh and get drunk and celebrate. | l |

And what about being on the show itself? Was it what you expected? Totally different. Oh my god, being in the show, it’s nerve-wracking. You never know what’s going to happen and what you’re going to go through. You probably see it at home and think it’s so easy and you can do that in a better way, but when you’re there and going through having to compete with the other girls, it’s really hard. Who is this year’s ‘bitch’? I hope it’s me! She’s always the one everyone remembers the most. If not me, it probably will be Manila Luzon from New York. She’s a bitch! I love Manila, we’re very good friends, but if not me it’s going to be her. What did you think of last year’s winner, Tyra Sanchez, whom of course is a fellow Floridian? I was so proud. I remember seeing Tyra a year before the show, she was entering newcomer pageants and I always thought she was so talented. To see her win, it inspired me to go back and try to audition for season three. She was great. You originally hail from Puerto Rico. What can you tell us about the drag scene there? There’s something really big going on called ‘Extravaganza Drag,’ which is a mix of Cirque du Soleil clowns with drag. It started like

In a surprising turn of events, Tampa Bay Business Guild board president Cory Jeffries stepped down from his role during the organization’s monthly meeting Jan. 11. Jeffries cited “personal reasons” for his departure and said he will remain on the board until the elections in April. Stepping into the role of president is Sharon Gwozdz, who was Jeffries’ vice president. “I am looking forward to our 29th year and will enjoy being a part of an organization that has remained strong for three decades,” Gwozdz said. Gwozdz said that membership numbers are up for the TBBG and that she expects all the seats on the board to be filled after the April elections. For more info, visit TBBG.org.

Hillsborough County’s first county commissioner (who happens to be gay) will celebrate his 40th birthday on Saturday, Feb. 5, with a campaign fundraiser at Mise En Place from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Kevin Beckner’s countywide seat is up for election again in 2012, but so far no candidate has

announced any direct opposition to him. Regardless, Beckner and his supporters are prepping for another campaign season and tickets to the celebration—which is also a celebration of his continued commitment to public service, according to the invitation—start at a $40 contribution. The maximum contribution allowed is $500. Lester Freeman and “D” Band will provide the entertainment and attendees will no doubt get a chance to speak directly with the handsome commissioner. RSVPs can be sent to Ginnie@KevinBeckner.com.

No more Naturists The Tampa Bay Naturists are no more. The gay social nudist group officially closed shop on Dec. 31, 2010, according to an e-mail sent to Watermark. That e-mail also directed those interested in joining a gay naturist group to visit GayNaturists. org. It is unclear as to why the Tampa Bay Naturists closed down. On its website, the group advertised that it had anywhere from 70 to 90 members and that it would host functions of a non-sexual nature throughout the Tampa Bay region. It is unclear if the group will reform at a later time.

orlando overheard Tips for Tweeka Hair stylist John Barber is best known for his antics as “Tweeka Weed”—the outrageous drag character he created years ago. Tweeka has performed at numerous high profile events, including Beach Ball and Come Out With Pride, always with a twinkle in his eye that suggests he’s as surprised by his antics as we are. Barber was recently diagnosed with Sinonasal Carcinoma Cancer. He’s undergoing aggressive radiation and chemotherapy and is optimistic for a full recovery. Over the years Barber has raised thousands of dollars for local charities, and now his friends want to do the same for him at a Sunday, Jan. 23 fundraiser at Stardust Lounge, 431 E. Central Blvd. The event lasts from 3-7 p.m., and show time is at 5. Not surprisingly, Barber hopes there’ll be enough money to start a fund for others who may have difficulty paying necessary bills during a period of illness.

Friends Return Dennis McCormack and Joe Bettes have moved back to Orlando, and lots of people are happy to see them. For years, McCormack was manager/ bartender at the iconic Full Moon Saloon, a bear bar next door to the Parliament House. In 2005 he and partner Bettes opened Friends, a casual dining hangout on Mills Avenue known for good food at good prices. After three successful years

they closed up and moved to Fort Lauderdale. And now they’re back, surrounded by, well, friends. You can find McCormack tending bar at the Bear Den—the cozy man’s bar at the back of the Parliament House.

Self-Abuse Just when you thought every sex-related malady has been unearthed, it turns out some men may have an allergy… to their own sperm! According to the Journal of Sexual Medicine, those with “post-orgasmic illness syndrome” experience flulike symptoms immediately after they ejaculate that can last for up to a week. If you think you have it, try a skin-prick test using a diluted form of your semen. If symptoms develop, go to the store and buy lots of Kleenex.

In A Word… Kudos to three members of the Watermark family. Former account executive Erica Franco’s new restaurant in Apopka, Garden on Park, received a glowing review in the Orlando Sentinel. Contributor Stephen J. Miller’s 7 Sonnets was part of the Playwrights’ Round Table at the Lowndes Shakespeare Center. And as a way to distract attention from his 44th birthday, contributor Scottie Campbell held a “Suckerpunch to Hunger” event for Hope & Help of Central Florida’s food bank.

Living it Up

Cirque’s La Nouba is an updated, but still very gay, feast for the senses

O

rlando | Sometimes even the best art benefits from reinvention. That’s why Cirque du Soleil has added new acts to its La Nouba, which has run consistently at Walt Disney World Resort for a dozen years. The title—which literally translates from its French origins to “to live it up”—is held in a big top theater with performances and costumes that invigorate all the senses and will no-doubt set off even the most dormant gaydar. “Come on, we’re in white silk with gold beading. How flamboyant is that?” asks out performer Justin Osbourne, who plays one of the four Les Cons. “We each have our own character on stage. I think because we’re all over the place and we are so loud, it comes off as [flamboyant]. Everybody interprets it differently. I personally take it as a compliment.” Les Cons, or “The Nuts,” look like extras from Erasure’s “Always” video. Dressed in all white, this quartet is ever-present throughout the show. They find themselves in the middle of everything and often participate in different ways. Neither true performers nor merely spectators, they bumble their way through with naive innocence and feminine mannerisms. While most of the female performers are costumed in spandex or muted tones, quite a few of the men don pleated silk and stretch velour, elaborate collars, head ornaments, leather and tutu skirts. The entire show is set in a magical and enchanted environment where even the lead male singer can be seen high above the stage in an ostentatious feathered headdress and elaborate robe. t. Petersburg | As music and technology has evolved over the years, the definition of what makes someone a musician has as well. DJ O, also known as Eric Overstreet, has seen that evolution first-hand. As a popular area DJ who works every Sunday T-Dance at the Flamingo Resort, the Bradenton native knows the power of music. “I believe anyone who performs or plays music is a musician,” the 39-year-old says. “Any kind of music that can make someone dance or feel something is a wonderful thing—and that’s what music is all about.” In 2010, Watermark readers chose DJ O as one of their favorite local musicians in the annual WAVE Awards. It makes sense that the LGBT community would recognize his work, since his beginnings in the DJ realm were based on his own coming out story. “I was attending college and hanging out at Celebrity’s in Sarasota,” DJ O says. “I couldn’t hang out there because I was underage—unless I was working. So I started as a light guy for the drag shows and was watching the DJ, Randy Archer there and asked him to show me how to be a DJ.” Soon the young DJ O was working behind the DJ booth at Rowdy’s, Roosters and Chauda’s. He’s done so since 1990 and was a DJ at the Suncoast Resort before it closed in 2007. He says he has carried many of the friendships he made at Suncoast onto the Flamingo. Music has changed a lot since the early 1990s and continues to change almost weekly. New acts, new sounds and new beats are constantly hitting the Billboard charts, which DJ O monitors closely. He says he also gets help from his partner, Johnathon Haughton, who helps him set up at his gigs. “Looking for the right song for everyone is a challenging task,” he says. “However, you have to have an open mind. Thank God for CDs and mp3s, because records were getting heavier and harder to find. Now I can prepare using a computer to make life a lot easier.” DJ O is focused on his Flamingo gig and working private parties for now, but would eventually lke to get into recording remixes. “Being one of the WAVE winners was a milestone for me because it feels good being recognized doing something you put your heart and soul into,” he says. After so many years of DJing, most would have difficulty picking their favorite moment. But not DJ O. For him, that’s an easy question. “That was the day I asked my partner to marry me during Flamingo’s T-Dance,” he says. “I was working with Alexis De La Mer on our Booty Shaking Contest and we stopped halfway so I could propose—and he said yes. It was the first proposal at a T-Dance for me! Steve Blanchard

ampa | Like most directors, Karla Hartley began her career in theater as an actress, performing roles for audiences on stages throughout Tampa Bay. But Hartley knew a long time ago that she was meant to be a director, rather than an actor. “I began directing in college at Boston University,” the Tampa native says. “I enjoy digging into a script and bringing a playwright’s words to life through the lens of the vision I have for the play. I love working with actors, helping them define the world of the play and their place in it.” Hartley has plenty to keep her busy. She is currently working on a number of projects, including stage managing Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at American Stage and serving as the Production Coordinator for that company. She is also the Associate Artistic Director of Stageworks Theatre. The 40-year-old says she is drawn more to dramatic work, because of the power it can have over audiences. “My natural instincts lend themselves to more dramatic work,” Hartley says. “I enjoy work that is thought-provoking and causes people to examine ideas both old and new. Theater is meant to entertain, yes—but it can also transform.” Hartley says she is inspired by the founder and artistic director of La MaMa Experimental Theater Club, Ellen Stewart. Stewart, who passed away recently, had an extraordinary vision and principle who transformed Hartley’s understanding of what theater could be, she says. “Everything I work on has its own life and unique vitality,” Hartley says. “Whether it is a comedy, drama or musical, I try to find the heart of the story and tell it as skillfully as possible.” And, the out director admits that she has a weakness for plays with an LGBT theme or message. “Naturally I have an affinity for LGBT plays and the understanding of our community they can offer to others,” she says. “Every person has the right to see work that reflects them and their lives and examines issues specific to those lives.” Hartley has a very busy season ahead of her. She is directing MOMOlogues for Stateworks Theatre, Falsettos for The University of Tampa and Yellowman for Jobsite Theatre. She will also be the lighting designer on The Frogs for Freefall Theatre, Guys and Dolls for the Manatee Players, A Lesson Before Dying for Stageworks and The Gamester for Eckerd College. “I want to do good work and I obviously hope that work is recognized and appreciated,” Hartley says. “But ultimately, I want the product I put on stage to be as close to the artistic vision I had of the work as possible.” Steve Blanchard

SCISSOR SISTERS

On Apr. 7, the wild rave that is Scissor Sisters in concert is making their only stop in Florida, at Orlando’s Hard Rock. Because three-fourths of the band is gay, their LGBT fans usually celebrate the occasion with wild costumes and even wilder dancing to the internationally bestselling dance songs. The event always promised to be fun, sexy, weird and edgy. This recent tour is in support of Night Works, the Sisters’ third album, a catchy conglom of beatfriendly tunes with a decidedly gritty, sexual bent.

rlando | Brandon Register-Watford wears a lot of different hats, both literal and figurative. He’s an actor at Universal and Titanic the Experience; the latter at which he has also been known to write and costume. He’s appeared on Central Florida stages in plays, musicals and dinner shows. Finally, and possibly most notably, Register-Watford is a look-alike for Edward Cullen, the main vampire in Stephanie Meyer’s wildly poplar Twilight series. In this role, he makes appearances around the globe, representing the franchise to millions of rabid fans. “It’s all under the umbrella of theatre,” Register-Watford says, admitting he got bitten by the bug when, at eight years old, he played Patrick to his grandmother’s Auntie Mame on a Florida Panhandle stage. “I didn’t at first think I looked like the character,” RegisterWatford admits of Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson in the movies, “but my dear friend and stylist told me, ‘If you don’t do this, I’ll kick your ass.’ And lo and behold, it’s a really fun thing!” The work has him hopping planes to international events and parties; he’s even the feature of Twilight cruises. The first boat trip was to Alaska and Canada; the next one is throughout the Mediterranean with other tribute artists of the vampire Cullen family. “Being surrounded by the other Cullen tribute artists, I feel like I have a second family.” His representing famous characters carries over to other roles, famous people aboard the fated Titanic, and most recently, another Robert Pattinson film character, Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter series. “You have to do your research in all things,” RegisterWatford says. “The fans are always excited to interact with you in the language of the books or the historical event.” He admits he loves this digging for details. His myriad activities might overwhelm the handsome young actor. However, the newly single Register-Watford balances it all with a rich life of friends both in and outside of his Twilight Cullen family. More info on RegisterWatford’s work and schedule can be found through his Facebook page; search under “Brandon is Edward Cullen.” Stephen Miller

MARLA MIRABAL VISUAL ARTIST

O

rlando | Sometimes fate helps push you out of your comfort zone. “I figured I could keep going on the path I was on,” says visual artist Marla Mirabal, “or I could see what else I could do.” Up until last year, the energetic and gregarious Mirabal was doing murals and scenic design. She also produced canvases based on her study in figure painting and inspired by her life as a Cuban-American and lesbian. Her work took her all over the US east coast, but she considers Orlando her home. “I love the Orlando arts, and I want to see it grow.” In fact, Mirabal is greatly loved back in this community she is always bolstering. She’s built bridges between the arts working alongside DJ/dancer Blue and with DRIP, the modern dance company. Then on June 14, 2010, while bicycling through downtown Orlando, Mirabal was hit by a car. The damages left her unable to complete a lot of her physical work, including climbing up and down ladders. It also drove her to contemplate the next step in life. “It’s frustrates and confuses me that Orlando doesn’t have a supported gallery culture,” she says, citing that many up-and-coming Central Florida artists only have small and constantly shifting venues to display their works. “I thought either I could be a part of the problem or be a part of the solution.” The accident drove her to Asheville, S.C., with her brother where she’s taking a self-induced sabbatical to heal and look at graduate programs. “My goal is to come back to Orlando and work on the gallery problem and maybe go into teaching, help shape the next new artists,” Mirabal says. “It’s really my home.” Still, Mirabal admits the scene could be better: “There are bars and tea shop and cafes, but those shows go up for a month, and then they disappear. I figured I could bitch about it, or I could start the process of fixing that.” The community awaits her return. Her work is on Facebook under her name. Stephen Miller

Orlando’s annual bacchanal of the performing arts celebrates the stranger, riskier side of art with LGBT plays, jugglers, puppets, modern dance troupes, gratuitous nudity, upstart comedians, and a nightly party on the “Green Lawn of Fabulousness.” This year promises to be especially crazy, given that we’re celebrating two decades of showing the rest of the nation how it’s done.

| uu | Cirque du Soliel from p.43

More than 60 artists, creators, designers, and technicians from around the world have collaborated to bring this fairy tale to life. Performers come from Russia, Canada, United States, Ukraine, China, Brazil, France, Poland and Belarus. As found in a “traditional” circus, clowns, tightrope walkers, trapeze artists and a juggler are part of the entertainment. However, unlike any other circus, Cirque du Soleil offers a multi-sensory experience that is androgynous, astonishing and poignant. Osbourne joined Cirque du Soleil when he was 16. Before joining the company, the Canadian gymnast-turned-tumbler finished second in the world at a World Age Group Championship. He then spent five years with Mystére, toured with Alegria and has been performing in La Nouba since its inception 12 years ago. It was also while on Mystère that he decided to take up a cause that was near and dear. He had a 30 year-old fan with Down Syndrome who used to come and see the show on a regular basis. In 2002, Osbourne and his friend, Marian Malensek, decided to host a “special friend for the day” at La Nouba. By virtue of a special arrangement, Justin invites two guests (a child and his or her parent or legal tutor) from the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida (DSACF.org.) to see La Nouba each month. The son of teachers, Osbourne is also a

comedian, having studied drama and musical theatre in high school. The combination of his tumbling and acting skills made him an ideal fit as one of Les Cons when the time came to cast La Nouba. He says the transition wasn’t difficult coming from a competitive career. “The great thing about Cirque is that artists and acrobats like us have something to go into after our competitive career is done,”

The UK native says she loved training in Montreal for six weeks, getting to learn acting and performing. Although, Wright and Osbourne stressed that not everyone with an acrobatics or gymnastics background is able to make the transition. Osbourne says consistency and being well-rounded are integral. “A good work ethic is essential,” adds Wright. “You’re performing every night, ten shows a week, 470-something shows a year. So you’ve got to really want to do it. Besides that, you’ve got to have some fun in you.” You’d think with such demanding training and performing schedules, it would affect their social lives. However, it’s been quite the opposite says the performers. Osbourne has been with his partner for eight years and since joining the cast, Wright has come out. “I didn’t have a social life before I started here,” Wright explains. “I was training five hours a day, then coaching. Then, I was studying to get my degree. Now, all my efforts go into working evenings. I have until 5 o’clock everyday for myself.” Osbourne says the experience has heightened his social life. Osbourne says. “Most of us have been in the “You’re around people that do the exact gym since we were three years old, so when same thing,” he says. “Sometimes when our competitive career is finished, it’s not you move into a new job, it’s kind of hard; like we’re going to go sit in an office. Handle those BFF conflicts ADVICE FROM

The Truth

Truth@WatermarkOnline.com

that you feel that you had to “fight to spend some time with her alone” at Christmas is maybe not the greatest sign. You asked if I thought this is normal and if you are crazy. The answers are: Sort of no, with a but. And definitely no, with a maybe. It’s not exactly normal, but our unique lives sometimes create unconventional alliances and clearly “family” to your girlfriend includes her ex. You are definitely not crazy, given that this isn’t garden variety jealousy, and you’re blowing the whole situation out of proportion (and naughty reader if that is the case). The advice I’m about to give is neither original nor particularly insightful, but Here Comes the Truth: it's time for an honest, direct, transparent conversation with your life partner where you express your feelings about this and the two of you, together as a couple and as adults, find the right solution.

Dear Truth, I am a 27-year-old gay man living in Orlando, and I need help with my roommate situation. I’ve shared a rental house with a 24 year-old straight guy, Leo, for about five years. Leo pays his bills on time, keeps the house clean (mostly), and is usually easy to get along with. He and I are also workout partners and we share food expenses and keep each other on track as far as fitness goes. We actually met at the gym and that’s how we became friends. The problem is that Leo turns into a giant ass whenever he starts dating a girl. Since he started dating this last chick he has Dear Truth, repeatedly no-call-no-showed at the gym y girlfriend, Robyn, is best without apology. Tampa, Orlando, Lauderdale teams take trophies at Meltdown staff report Orlando | Despite the chilly mornings, the 12th Annual Orlando Meltdown Charity Softball Tournament offered perfect weather for a weekend of outdoor play at Lake Fairview and the Seminole County Softball Complex Jan. 15 and 16. In all, 48 teams participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend tournament, which benefitted several charities. Tournament winners in each division received checks for first, second and third place payable to a charity of their choice. In addition, two teams with the “most runs” during tournament round robin also received a check payable to a charity of their choice. The Orlando Meltdown is put on by officers of the Central Florida Softball League, which is the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance affiliate in Orlando. In the C-Division, the Tampa Crocs took first followed by Fort Lauderdale’s Atomic Boom. The Orlando Scrappers finished third in that division. The New Moon Sluggers of Fort Lauderdale won the D-Division after beating second-place finishers the G. Bar

Aces of Tampa. The Wild Stallions of Orlando finished third in the D-Division. In the women’s competitive league, the New Moon Sol Rebels of Fort Lauderdale took home the first place trophy while the New Moon Lightning Strikes, also of Fort Lauderdale, placed second. Orlando’s Chix With Stix finished third. In the women’s recreational division, PRIME, of Orlando, placed first after outscoring the Manor Vandals of Fort Lauderdale. Orlando’s Crazy Stix took home the third-place trophy. Each of the top three teams in every division was awarded a check to give to the charity of their choice. Charities ranged from the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to Humane Societies throughout the region. According to organizers, the Meltdown has donated upwards of $6,000 per year to charities and more than 1,500 players and fans descend upon the two complexes hosting the games each year. “For an actor to be working is a kind of miracle, because most actors aren’t. So it’s just silly for a working actor to say, ‘Oh, I don’t care if anybody knows I’m gay’—especially if you’re a leading man. Personally, I wouldn’t advise a gay leading man-type actor to come out.” —The still-employed Richard Chamberlain gives a bit of advice.

here were you when the ball dropped? If you were home on New Year’s Eve, you had the choice of spending the night with Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper on CNN, or Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest on ABC. Griffin was on good behavior, yet managed to continuously make Coop giggle like a little girl with demonstrations of the dancing at the Univision pavilion next door. When she promised to get Andy to take his shirt off, a woman watching from below actually registered a look of horror. Despite earlier assurances that he’d be kissing “girlfriend” Julianne Hough, Seacrest shared that special moment with nine guys. At the bewitching hour, he found himself wedged between the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block— girlfriend, please! As for Clark, I’m happy to report there were no major gaffes this year and he managed to clock in an extra 23 seconds of airtime from last year’s 6 minutes...but who’s counting? Oh, before I leave Miss Griffin, our favorite funny lady had quite a festive holiday season. Kathy went to Hawaii to spend Christmas with Cher (you can bet they didn’t go to see Burlesque). The

pair was spotted paddle boarding—of course, “someone” alerted the paparazzi to this historic event. There’s something truly wrong with the world when Kathy is wearing less clothing than Cher. But there’s Kathy, trying to look poised paddling in a bikini, while Cher (wisely) wore a wet suit. Elton John and David Furnish had a baby boy over the holidays. Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born via surrogate on Christmas Day. This had been in the works ever since the couple was denied the chance to adopt a Ukrainian orphan who captured Elton’s heart last year. While the couple continues to support the Ukrainian tyke, they made plans for a child of their very own. “We have fulfilled a dream in finally becoming parents, and are so happy and excited at this very special time.” Congrats! Not surprisingly, upwardly-mobile Neil Patrick Harris is already angling for entre to the empire of Elton. NPH Tweeted, “Great congratulations to David Furnish & Elton John on the birth of their son, Zachary! Can’t wait for play dates in the south of France.” OY! We all know that Ricky Martin had his twins via surrogate last year. With a new CD about to drop, he’s doing more and more interviews. When Attitude magazine in the UK queried what he looks for in a man, Ricky went that well-trod route of talking about personality traits: “I love witty. I love mental strength. Just being secure. Somebody who is very sure of themselves without being arrogant—smart, witty, has a career. Adventurous is the word.” I love when people do this—as if a guy who ticked all these boxes would still be his ideal mate if he had a hump or was missing a limb. Colin Firth once again impresses by giving one of the year’s best performances in The King’s Speech.. But he’s got other ambitions: “I’m dying to play a transvestite or a stripper or a pop star.” He should do the David Bowie story—then he’ll get to play all three at once! Clay Aiken recently hit the trifecta by landing a boyfriend who

is an actor, dancer and underwear model! Hot on the heels of other hoofers, his latest paramour is Jeff Walters, a Dallas-area actor who Clay originally spotted in a production of The Rocky Horror Show. Want to guess which role he was playing? One that showed off his enormous...er, “talent.” One of their first dates was going to the Gaylord Texan Ice Show—which I know nothing about, but sounds like a pretty gay date to me. Of course, we’ve got pics of the couple on our website. But that’s not all. Jeff seems to enjoy showing off on Grindr—and let me again remind Joel Shimko that I’m still waiting for a Windows version of Grindr. Lastly, Reichen feels that his time on The A-List: New York was not representative of who he really is. He’s apparently shocked that the 3,600 hours of filming was reduced to three hours of footage that he watched “sometimes in horror at all that was left out.” out He wants us to know that he and the rest of the alleged AList boys are not “vapid queens”. Honey, if it walks like a duck... When I’m starting the year with animal impressions, it’s definitely time to end yet another column. Until next time, remember, one man’s filth is another man’s bible. | l |
