Creating a New Normal O rlando | The woman sitting across from me at Dexter’s in Thornton Park has prettier nails and more feminine footwear than I do. It’s hard for me to believe she once used to compete with her brothers to see who could grow the best beard. “Did you ever win?” I ask. “Yes, I did,” she says. The woman, a model of the put-together feminine business executive, tells the story with the satisfaction of someone at peace with the past and the present. It dates back to when she was Greg Pingston, homecoming king, high school football star, long-time husband and a father of two; the poster boy for the successful American male. Then, after years of quiet desperation and exacting preparation, Greg decided it was time to make a major change. In 2007 he underwent the sex reassignment surgery that would allow him to be the person he had become, and perhaps always was: Gina Duncan. Wells Fargo, the company Duncan worked for, stepped up to help both she and her

colleagues handle the transition as smoothly as possible. She recently retired from a distinguished career with the firm and is now applying her considerable energy to her new role as president the Metropolitan Business Association of Orlando, the area’s LGBT Chamber of Commerce and sponsor of Come Out With Pride. Duncan is also a source of advice and inspiration for others who are charting the often-baffling terrain of Gender Identity Disorder and gender transition. You can, she

wants them to know, become the person you always wanted to see in the mirror. And you can be happy. Cross Dress-Up The first time young Greg put on a dress it wasn’t his idea. He was seven years old and hanging out with his sisters at the house of a neighboring family that included seven girls. Greg was waiting for their brother. “The girls decided they were going to play dress-up and I was going to join them,”

Duncan remembers. “For the first time I put on a little sheath dress, and I remember that to this day. I even remember the weather.” Duncan eventually found that crossdressing lead to “this feeling of relief. I could breathe.” That feeling continued through elementary school, high school and college. “To a small degree, it would almost be like I would need a hit,” Duncan says. “A period of time would pass and then I would get this horrible urge that I needed to do this, so I would steal my mom’s clothes. The older I got, the more I needed it.” Greg didn’t really understand those feelings in his otherwise well-adjusted youth as part of an influential Merritt Island family. He also didn’t really understand those feelings when he married in 1980. In those years there was little information on Gender Identity Disorder; a conflict between the gender a person is born and the gender with which they identify. Greg just felt like he wasn’t who he was. Continued on page 23 | uu |

Students requesting Westboro counter-protestors stay home staff report Orlando | Dr. Philips High School students, LGBT community leaders and Orlando police are asking that people thinking of attending a protest by notorious anti-gay group Westboro Baptist Church stay home. Westboro plans to picket Dr. Philips High School from 6:50–7:20 a.m. on Friday, April 29. Their press release says the school is “fag-infested” and “pervert-run.” At least two counter-protests have popped up on Facebook, with as many as 2,000 people reporting that they plan to attend.

The Center executive director Randy Stephens said students have planned a peaceful counter-protest, wearing purple or blue shirts as a sign of solidarity against bullying, and they have asked for no outside interference. Stephens said he met with members of the Orlando Police Department and they discussed the parking and traffic issues a counter-protest would create. He is asking LGBT supporters to respect the students’ wishes and refrain from protesting Westboro, suggesting instead that counterprotestors create videos or web pages supporting the students. | l |

Orlando | Scooters 4 Hooters has come a long way in the past five years. The first benefit for Libby’s Legacy, a foundation providing breast health care to Central Florida, had a fundraising goal of $5,000, and raised $15,000. The 2011 event goal was $100,000, and the April 16 event has brought in $119,422 with funds still coming in. Robin Naynard is the founder of both the event and its foundation, in honor of her mother Libby Naynard, who passed away in 2006. She said this year’s event featured 255 scooters, more than 400 riders and more survivors than ever before. “Central Florida’s first ever digital mobile mammography unit led the ride this year,” she said. “[Scooters 4 Hooters] is a story of hope and strength and courage; we gave away more than 650 breast health services last year. That’s huge.” The event has outgrown its original Wall

The owners of Funky Monkey Wine Company are launching two new restaurants in the Sanctuary building downtown. Eddie Nickell and Nicholas Olivieri announced that Prickly Pear—Fresh American Cuisine and Nick’s Italian Kitchen will arrive in the spots formerly occupied by Graze and Fifi’s. Prickly Pear will serve southwest-inspired dishes, while Nick’s Italian Kitchen will feature dishes from all regions of Italy and an extensive wine list. Both restaurants are slated to open this summer.

UCF spotlights LGBT issues The University of Central Florida (UCF) may offer domestic partner benefits to the university’s faculty and staff. The Student Government Association Senate passed a resolution supporting the benefits on April 14.

Additionally, the school hosted a debate about same-sex marriage on April 21. Anti-gay author and radio host Dr. Michael L. Brown faced off against LGBT supporter and Rollins professor Dr. Eric Smaw. The original moderator was John Stemberger, but UCF reportedly changed the event after receiving negative feedback on Stemberger’s involvement.

Babes N Bonnets raises nearly $9K The Orlando Youth Alliance’s (OYA) annual Easter-time fundraiser, Babes N Bonnets, raised $8,841. The event was April 18 at the Footlight Theatre at Parliament House. Nineteen clubs, bars, restaurants and other businesses created elaborate headdresses that were auctioned off to attendees. The event was hosted by Darcel Stevens and Baby Blue. Carmella Marcella Garcia created the event, which debuted at the Parliament House in 1998.

Orange County Commissioners approve domestic partner benefits jamie hyman Orlando | The Orange County Commission is so in favor of domestic partner benefits for county employees that they almost approved the motion twice. After the usual proclamations and public comment, Mayor Teresa Jacobs called for a vote on the proposal. All commissioners quickly voted “aye,” none voting “nay,” before Commissioner Ted Edwards and County Comptroller Martha Haynie cut in, mentioning that they would like to make some comments. Ten minutes later the commissioners voted again and officially approved the motion unanimously, with benefits taking effect on Jan. 1, 2012. “It is somewhat complicated from a tax and administrative standpoint,” said Haynie. “We’ll do everything we can to make sure everyone is treated fairly, but please bear with us as we work through implementation.” In their pre-vote comments, many commissioners took the time to recognize Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, who led the effort in 2008 to extend benefits to same sex domestic partners of city employees, and former Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart, who crusaded on behalf of same-sex partners of county employees. Sheehan and Stewart were the first to speak in favor of the benefits. “It’s not the same as marriage, but it makes things a little more fair,” Sheehan said. She added that only seven city employees have taken advantage of the domestic partner benefits, and the cost is less than 1/1000th of 1 percent of the city’s budget. “This brings Orange County into the mainstream,” Stewart said. “I hope more businesses will come because of [domestic partner benefits] and I think they will.” Mayor Jacobs also recognized Orlando attorney and LGBT activist Mary Meeks. “Mary has been working behind the scenes with our legal staff,” Jacobs said. Meeks commented that the fight for equality “is still a very painful process for us,” noting that once married, heterosexual couples automatically get more than 1200 rights and benefits that are not afforded to same sex couples. “We constantly find ourselves in a position where we are forced literally to have to incrementally negotiate the terms of our dignity and humanity as human beings, to get just some of same rights that our fellow citizens already have and sometimes take for granted,” she said. Meeks pointed out that the proposal will grant some of those important marital rights to gay couples. “I truly believe our families are the same,” Meeks said. “We all love our families and we

all need the same rights and benefits to take care of our families.” One speaker encouraged the commissioners to vote against domestic partner benefits, calling gay couples “unnatural, an affront.” In the speakers request form he listed his name as “Charles Norris,” also the name of a well-known conservative actor and television personality. Orlando filmmaker and LGBT activist Vicki Nantz showed a photo of what she said is Orlando’s typical gay family. “The majority of gay families are led by two middle aged women, often African American or Latino,” she said, mentioning that about half take care of children. There was also large college and university representation at the meeting. Student speakers from UCF and Barry University spoke in support of the benefits, and a Rollins instructor brought her entire “Solidarity, Equality, Community” class to the meeting. After the public speakers, Jacobs deftly rearranged the agenda so that the vote on domestic partner benefits would follow. The county’s Human Resources Director, J. Richard Daye, outlined the proposal. Daye said his department surveyed 18 public employers and found that half offer domestic partner benefits. He said the City of Orlando offers the best local comparison. Currently, 16,121 Orange County employees and retirees receive benefits. Daye said the anticipated costs are less than one percent of the total benefits cost. The cost per domestic partner would be about the same as the current cost of a spouse: $4,754. Benefits to be provided include: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, COBRA, bereavement leave, domestic violence leave and the employee assistance program, which covers various counseling and referral services. To be covered, domestic partners must be at least 18 years old and in a committed, long-term relationship. They cannot be married or in a domestic partnership with anyone else and they must prove they are responsible for each other’s financial welfare via two notarized documents. Mayor Jacobs pointed out that opposite-sex couples are not included because they have the option of marriage. “I believe this policy is fair and I think tolerance is something that this community needs to be better at,” Jacobs said. Commissioner Jennifer Thompson encouraged the county to progress even further. “I would not start a business, raise a family, or live in a community that wasn’t tolerant,” she said. “Let’s take the next step and look at a domestic partner registry.” Mayor Jacobs affirmed that the county would move forward with consideration of such a registry. | l |

St. Petersburg | Nearly 370 people gathered to support Equality Florida at its annual Pinellas Gala fundraiser on Saturday, April 16—and they broke two records by doing so. Those attending the gala held at the new Dali Museum downtown raised an all-time high of $106,000. The number of people attending an Equality Florida gala was also a new record. “The evening would not have been possible without the passing, time, commitment and energy of each of our host committee members, led by our steering committee,” said organizer Ed Lally. A response was not received regarding a request for totals raised at the Tampa, Orlando and Miami Equality Florida galas. “As a young girl growing up in Florida’s panhandle, I remember riding on buses and coaches telling us to duck down below the windows when we would pass through towns where black faces showing would cause us trouble,” Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith told the large crowd. “It’s amazing how far we’ve come but we realize how much more there is still to do.” Also present at the Pinellas Gala were Deputy Director Stratton Pollitzer, St. Petersburg City Councilman Steve Kornell and the Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson, of the Metropolitan Community Church. The evening was emceed by Bay News 9 traffic

For many, it was their first experience in the new museum. The Equality Florida event was not the first LGBT-specific event to be held in the new facility, however. Tampa | Founding St. Pete Pride board member Carl Kuttler III leapt to his death on Friday, April 22, after he dialed local news anchor man from the top of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Kuttler, who served on the St. Pete Pride board during the festival’s first two years, was a businessman who launched his business, Kuttler Kitchens, in the 1990s. He was 43. “The energy with which he helped put together that first Pride was amazing,” said fellow founding St. Pete Pride member Brian Longstreth. “Starting a street festival from scratch with no experience was an amazing job. The festival started off fast and furious and he was a large part of making that happen.” According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Kuttler parked his 2006 Infiniti on the median of the bridge and dialed Bay News 9 anchor Al Ruechel around 2:30 p.m. Ruechel told the St. Petersburg Times that Kuttler had done kitchen work for him. While the news

anchor tried to convince Kuttler not to jump, the station dialed 911. By the time authorities arrived, Kuttler was no longer on the Skyway. A boater found his body in Tampa Carl Kuttler III Bay shortly after. The Kuttler family is influential in Tampa Bay and Kuttler’s father, Carl Kuttler Jr., was president of St. Petersburg College from 1978 to 2009. The elder Kuttler is very conservative. “St. Petersburg College is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Carl Kuttler III,” SPC president Bill Law said in a statement. “Carl Kuttler Jr. has many friends and former colleagues who will be thinking of him and his family at this most difficult time.” It was unclear if Carl Kuttler III left a note explaining his actions. | l |

Francis House fundraiser seeks dinner hosts steve blanchard Tampa | Dinner parties are a great way to entertain friends, dish some great gossip and now, it’s the perfect way to raise money for charity. The Francis House is asking volunteers to host dinner parties on June 4 as a way to raise funds for an expansion project at the HIV/AIDS services organization. Go Eat Tampa Bay is a resurrection of sorts of the popular Stix of Fire fundraiser that used to benefit the Tampa AIDS Network. “It was probably TAN’s main fundraiser,” said Joy Winheim, executive director of Francis House. “We’re kind of running with that idea. We recruit dinner hosts to have a dinner at the home. They encourage people to donate money and then we meet for a dessert reception at the Glazier Children’s Museum later that night.” Francis House provides everything the dinner host needs—except for the actual food and drinks. Invitations, brochures, stickers and contribution envelopes are available for hosts to make fundraising as easy as possible. “Hosts can be as elaborate or as simple as they’d like,” Winheim explained. “You can have a Mexican fiesta and charge $10 at the door or serve Filet Mignon and ask your friends for $50. I even have one host meeting with friends at Burger King and asking them to bring cash for the donation envelopes.” Winheim would like to see at least 100150 hosts participate this year and she’s asking each to shoot for a goal of $250. The money raised will go toward adding a Carlos Alvarez Annex to the existing Francis House structure, which is packed with workers, clients and volunteers. Right now, Winheim has about 20 hosts ready to serve meals and they are located throughout the country.

“I have family up north hosting dinners and they’re going to mail the contributions,” she said. “I understand that June 4 is during Gay Days Weekend. So if anyone wants to hold their dinners before or after that, we’re fine with that. It’s about raising money and having fun.” The Francis House began 21 years ago and provides several programs to assist those dealing with HIV/AIDS. Everything from a food pantry to mental health counseling is provided by Francis House and the addition of a new annex would pave the way for more grant opportunities. “We’re doing this fundraiser because we are in desperate need of extending our space,” Winheim said. “We’re trying to raise the money and build the Annex so our mental health counseling can use that space.” That will, in turn, free up space in the existing building and allow for more programs, Winheim said. “Right now we can’t go anywhere with more staff,” she said. “We have 5,000square-feet now. Sarasota| For a second year, Harvey Milk Festival president Shannon Fortner has created a rich line up of musical acts to perform in honor of the late Harvey Milk, the first openly gay American elected to public office. The second annual Harvey Milk Festival is slated for May 20-22 in the historic Rosemary District of Sarasota. Admission is free. Separated from her life partner Kelly, a resident of Birmingham, England, Fortner became an equal rights activist to spread awareness of civil rights legislation, while keeping the community clean, safe, and united against prejudice. The 2010 inaugural event tallied more than 2,000 visitors, and Fortner expects more this year. “We’re booking more national acts and spreading the word through social media,” Fortner said. “This year, we’re offering a variety of musicians to match all musical tastes. Also, we hope to have a more prominent art show to accompany the festival, with work from critically-acclaimed artists. “ When she’s not organizing a large festival, Fortner is the lead singer of the electo band MeteorEYES. For her, the goal of the festival is to be recognized as a “national stage for emerging artists” aligned in the name of equality. This year, the festival’s program includes Ha Ha Tonka, MeteorEYES, A Fragile Tomorrow, and Sons of Hippies. While the festival may look like a gay Pride event, it’s about more than that, according to Fortner. “We’re focused on LGBT rights, but we also hope to attract people outside of the queer culture,” she said. “We’d like support from the American community as a whole. We need everyone to be part of the movement, not just the gay population.” For five years, Fortner has been in a relationship with her partner, Kelly, but the two have been forced to live apart due to

immigration laws. Kelly is from the United Kingdom and current marriage laws in the United States prevent Fortner from sponsoring her so they can live as a couple. Fortner does have some hope, however, that the Uniting American Families Act currently before Congress will pass and change the laws. “Harvey Milk focused on the community as a whole, while creating a safe place for the queer community to be themselves,” Fortner said, when asked about what people should take from the festival. “He cleaned up his district. He was a sounding board for equality and justice. He was a tremendous advocate of a world where people, gay or straight, would no longer need to live in fear.” That’s a goal Fortner and other volunteers think is very attainable, as long as LGBTs and allies make their voices heard. “Call your representatives and let them know you support equality,” she said. “No matter how small an act, we can each be a catalyst for positive change.” This year’s headlining band is Ha Ha Tonka. Romantic marketing push to include gay couples wire report Miami | South Florida tourism officials are saying “I do” to romance. In an effort to grab a bigger chunk of the nation’s $74 billion wedding industry, visitors’ bureaus are rolling out campaigns to boost the area’s reputation as a destination for popping the question, tying the knot and getting away post-nuptials. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors’ Bureau is launching a $500,000 effort with bridal behemoth The Knot to promote the area to the betrothed, kicking off in the next couple weeks and culminating with Miami Romance Month in June. The bureau’s executive vice presidentchief marketing officer, Rolando Aedo, said the efforts will also target gay visitors who want to hold a commitment ceremony in

Miami-Dade. The promotion will feature two major events in June: a wedding showcase and contest called “Marry Me in Miami” (with its own website, MarryMeInMiami.com) that will give the winning couple a $150,000 wedding at the Biltmore in Coral Gables. “We want everyone to think of June as the time to make commitments on all fronts,” Aedo said. Broward County is seeking its share of wedding business with a marketing campaign in June called Greater Fort Lauderdale-DO. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau will have a dedicated site online, a wedding guide, a tie-in to the area’s luxury hotel collection and a flurry of promotional activity including giveaways and advertising. | l |

“Our Fund” to benefit South Florida LGBTs jason parsley Broward County | If one is only vaguely conscious of non-profit organizations supporting the LGBT community in South Florida one is still at least aware that there are “lots of them.” Our Fund, an initiative developed by Anthony Timiraos and others, seeks to unite the many organizations supporting the LGBT community into a cohesive force. The primary focus of Our Fund will be to promote endowments and planned gifts and distribute these funds to organizations in the most efficient, effective and timely fashion. Timiraos worked for a number of years as the chief financial officer for the Community Foundation of Broward County. He also served as Board Member and Treasurer for

Lambda Legal, which fights for the rights of the LGBT community. “We saw a need for a central organization to coordinate donor’s intent with nonprofits serving the LGBT community,” said Timiraos. “There seems to be a lot of donors and individuals unfamiliar with non-profits serving the community,” Our Fund intends to bring the non-profit organizations together, to learn about each other and make sure they are not duplicating services. This will allow individual organizations to provide greater community impact. Visit Our-Fund.org for more information, or to make a donation. | l | Editor’s note: Jason Parsley is a reporter with the South Florida Gay news and this article is used with permission.

The city of Ft. Lauderdale may consider extending benefits to the domestic partners of unmarried employees. Right now, the city’s financial advisors are working on details and cost estimates, at the request of the city commission. The city would extend benefits to the domestic partner of any city employee, gay or straight. Broward County implemented domestic partner benefits benefits in 1999.

Report claims ADAP funds mismanaged A federal report claims Florida’s Bureau of HIV/AIDS mismanaged Aids Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) funds, which provides medication to low income residents. The report says that ADAP management did not take into consideration emerging trends about spending and enrollment, and therefore used faulty assumptions in creating cost estimates and deficit projections. The ADAP program is currently in the midst of a funding crisis.

Roommate charged with hate crime in NJ webcam case wire report Trenton, N.J. | A former Rutgers University freshman who prosecutors said used a webcam to spy on his roommate’s same-sex encounter was charged last week with a hate crime and accused of deleting tweets and texts to cover up his tracks. Dharun Ravi, 19, was indicted in Middlesex County on 15 counts including bias intimidation and invasion of privacy in events that predated the suicide of 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, who in death started a national conversation on the perils of bullying. Ravi had already faced invasion of privacy charges along with another Rutgers student, Molly Wei. It took prosecutors months to present their case to a grand jury alleging that Ravi targeted Clementi because of his sexual orientation and tried to broadcast the encounter online to intimidate his roommate. The cascade of events started the day Ravi “learned the name of his roommate,’’ Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan

said in a statement, not elaborating. The charges do not link the alleged spying to Clementi’s suicide. “The grand jury indictment spells out cold and calculated acts against our son, Tyler, by his former college roommate,” Clementi’s parents, Jane and Joe Clementi, said in a statement. “If these facts are true, as they appear to be, then it is important for our criminal justice system to establish clear accountability under the law.” Kaplan said charges against Wei weren’t presented to the grand jury. It was unclear whether a case against Wei would go before a grand jury or whether she helped prosecutors in the case against Ravi. The state’s hate crime law “recognizes the terrible harm caused by acts of bigotry and hatred and imposes harsher punishment on those who commit such crimes,” Attorney General Paula Dow said. If convicted of the most serious bias charge, Ravi could face five to 10 years in prison. | l |

Republican-hired firm ends gay marriage ban work wire report Atlanta, Ga. | A law firm hired by Republican lawmakers is dropping its work defending the federal gay marriage ban amid criticism by advocacy groups. King & Spalding chairman Robert Hays, Jr. said that the Atlanta-based firm had filed a motion to withdraw from its involvement in fighting legal challenges to the federal Defense of Marriage Act. In a statement April 25, Hays said the firm had made a mistake in accepting the case, but did not give further reasons for seeking to withdraw. “In reviewing this assignment further, I determined that the process used for vetting this engagement was inadequate,” he said. The Republican leadership of the U.S.

House had retained one of the firm’s attorneys, Paul Clement, after the Obama administration directed the U.S. Justice Department to stop defending the law in court. Clement resigned from the firm shortly after it moved to withdraw as counsel in the matter. Clement said he was not resigning because of any strongly held views over the statute, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. “Instead, I resign out of the firmly-held belief that a representation should not be abandoned because the client’s legal position is extremely unpopular in certain quarters.” King & Spalding had come under fire after Clement, who was Solicitor General under President George W. Bush, accepted the case. | l |

briefs Father kills 2 over daughter’s girlfriend

Moscow authorities authorize gay rally

Austin, Texas police say a man upset over his teenage daughter’s lesbian relationship killed her 24-year-old girlfriend and the girlfriend’s mother. Jose Alfonso Aviles has been charged with capital murder in the April 18 shooting deaths of 24-year-old Norma Hurtado and 57-year-old Maria Hurtado. Police and court documents say Aviles’ daughter was in the home at the time and found the two after the shooting. The Travis County district attorney’s office has not determined whether the case will be classified as a hate crime.

Moscow gay pride parade organizer Nikolay Alexeyev says the Moscow authorities have for the first time authorized a gay rally in Moscow’s Bolotnaya Square. “The Moscow government told gay pride organizers on April 26 that they have authorized a gay pride parade in Moscow,” Alexeyev said. The Moscow authorities under former mayor Yury Luzhkov banned such rallies and attempts to hold a gay pride parade in Moscow were often met with violent protests or curbed by police.

As a man, Gina Duncan was homecoming king, a high school football star, and a married father of two. But she now says, “I felt like I wasn’t in the moment… ever.” | Photo courtesy Gina Duncan

“I felt like I wasn’t in the moment… ever,” Duncan says. “I wasn’t connected. I never felt that I was really there.” The literal moment of truth came when Greg’s wife discovered some lingerie—Greg’s lingerie—in their closet and thought she had found evidence of an affair. She called him at work and Greg spent the long drive home deciding whether to pretend he was having an affair or admit that he was cross-dressing. Either way, another woman was about to be revealed. Know and Tell Greg decided to tell his wife the truth. Both have a similar, business-like perspective, and they handled the revalation the same way. “We did approach it almost like a managerial challenge,” Duncan says. “We saw the issues and looked at our options.” But in time his ex concluded that the situation was too different from what she’d signed up for. Eventually, the marriage ended. When Greg’s mother learned her son’s secret she decided to research GID. As a result, she was prepared for things to escalate and wasn’t surprised when the couple announced their separation. One of the books she read was She's Not There, the story of author Jennifer Finney Boylan’s transition from male to female. Greg’s mother, who is “very intuitive and my

best friend,” took the extraordinary step of driving to see all of his siblings to insist they read Boylan’s book to understand what Greg was going through. Greg’s father was in the initial stages of Alzheimer’s when he was given the news, but he became very clear. “He told me, ‘Son, you do what you need to do to be happy in this life,’” Duncan recalls. “Dad was a football star, marine drill instructor… a man’s man ….James Bond. It blew everyone away.” But as Greg slowly began confiding in more people, acceptance was not universal. “There’s a lot of people you thought would be by your side through the whole thing, and they disappear from your life,” Duncan says. “Other people totally embrace it and respect you for who you are.” You never know until you tell. No Turning Back There was one particular moment that prompted Duncan to finally make the change. Her children—now 29 and 27 and still close with their dad—had graduated from high school. One was living away from home. “More and more I would leave for a couple of days,” she says. “I would slip away so that I could be female.” After attending a weekend-long meeting of Tri-Ess, an international cross-dresser’s support group, the thought of returning home on Sunday was overwhelming.

“I felt like I couldn’t do this any longer. I went out in public and everything was normal and it felt so good to experience that for even just 48 hours,” she says. “I was hooked. I knew I could do it. That’s when everything went into motion.” We all know what it’s like to feel uncomfortable in something—a job, a relationship, a life role we’re not meant to play. When we’re not living authentically, pressure builds and we seek ways to change—or at least cope. But when you don’t feel comfortable in your gender, the pressure is intense and the change profound. It takes time, money—and real courage. In addition to painful genital and facial reconstructive surgery, there is the risk of losing family, friends, social connections, employment and worse. Based on a survey of more than 7000 transgender people in the United States by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Clara Moskowitz of LiveScience.com reports that 41% have attempted suicide (25% more than the general population), 19% have been refused medical care because of their “nonconforming gender status,” and 2% have been assaulted… in a doctor’s office! The Process Nobody would go through such trauma on a whim. Kathleen Farrell, Ph.D., a gender therapist in Tampa, says “it’s very rare” for a

patient who has had surgery to experience any kind of regret. Not surprising since by the time surgery is on the table, so to speak, the patient has committed to the end result. According to Dr. Farrell, if they fit the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria (there are proposed changes to the DSM criteria pending), and if their feelings are consistent over time, they have likely made the decision already. In 25 years of practice Dr. Farrell has seen about 3500 patients, 20% of whom have had surgical intervention (that makes about 700). She reports that only two have ever expressed any regret. The process usually begins with psychotherapy, and then hormone therapy when recommended. But Dr. Farrell says some patients start their own regime without consultation thanks to the availability of hormones on the internet. She recommends that these patients be monitored by a physician as soon as possible. Indeed, Duncan reports that the change in hormones was one of the most difficult and striking parts of the transition. After hormone therapy, the prescription is for patience. “Most doctors follow guidelines called the Standards of Care that require people to live and present as their preferred gender for months before receiving any physical intervention,” Moskowitz writes. With the patient’s feelings sorted out, surgery can be scheduled. But this step presents additional challenges. “Family, wives, children, parents and employment become important considerations,” Dr. Farrell says. “What’s going to happen if they transition on the job?” Many are forced to change jobs, but Duncan was fortunate in that respect. Wells Fargo proved an excellent environment for an employee in transition. The San Franciscobased company is consistently listed on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index as one of the Best Places to Work in terms of LGBT equality. At the time of her transition, Duncan was

watermark | the big story a highly valued manager with 200 people from 48 branches reporting to her. She says that from the day she shared her intentions with her boss, Wells Fargo supported her. Insurance paid for genital reconstructive and breast augmentation surgeries. They connected her with a therapist that called her daily. And importantly, they educated Duncan’s staff. In the highly competitive world of corporate finance, there were only a few bumps. “Other companies used the situation as a recruitment tool. They would call our best producers and say, ‘Do you really want to work for a freak?’” Duncan says. “We lost three people out of two hundred.” Some builders also expressed misgivings about working with Duncan, so she stepped back from regional to branch management. A dozen people requested a transfer to Duncan’s branch to show their support. They became part of her team and were with her until she retired.

important reason she never experienced the depression that others report after invasive surgery. According to Dr. Farrell, it can take three to six months for patients to return to normal after genital surgery… “whatever normal is.” People who knew her as Greg, a man who would have fit in at Bear Bust, have shared that they miss that person. But Duncan says this has mostly passed. She has maintained strong relationships with her children, friends and business and community associates. People who did not know her, however, accept her so completely as female that she’s come up against an intriguing and illuminating problem: sexism. Greg never experienced the patronizing “It’s ok, little lady, we’ll handle it.” But now it’s whole new ballgame, so to speak. Duncan has been treated dismissively as a woman, and is acutely aware of the discrimination. None of the bumps in the road have changed her mind. “People ask me, “If you had to do it all over again, knowing what you would How Not give up, would you do to Kill Yourself it?” Duncan says. “I say Duncan has advice for ‘Yes… because otherwise I those following in her highwouldn’t still be alive.” heeled footsteps. Fight Rick Scott Why aren’t more gay people outraged by actions taken by Florida governor Rick Scott? It seemed LGBTs were everywhere campaigning against him during the elections last year, but now that he is throwing more conservative roadblocks in the path of equality, our community seems to be quieter than ever. We need to contact our legislators and the governor’s office directly and remind him that he is everyone’s governor, not just the Christian Right or the Tea Party activists. It’s getting to the point where I may consider leaving the state I’ve called home for two decades because on our current path, Florida will be more hostile than ever toward gay people.

Edmond Gourdenman Orlando

“Thank you, Watermark, for giving us an insightful article that made me think differently about a disease I’ve heard about all my life.” —Darnel Waterford

Law firm should be praised King & Spalding has rightly chosen to put principle above politics in dropping its involvement in the defense of the Defense of Marriage Act, which is a discriminatory and patently unconstitutional law. We are pleased to see the firm has decided to stand on the right side of history and remain true to its core values. Speaker Boehner is likely to pursue continued defense of this odious law. However, law firms that value LGBT equality should remain committed to those values.

Maria Mejia has got to be one of the bravest women I’ve read about in a long time. It had to be a difficult decision to divulge her HIV status on such a large stage. After reading Watermark’s story on Women and HIV (Issue 18.08), I have begun following her blog and reading everything I can about her. Thank you, Watermark, for giving us an insightful article that made me think differently about a disease I’ve heard about all my life.

and engaged him in further discussion of the original op ed piece. The tides continued to turn against Adams’ defender, and the discussion became plannedchaos vs. everyone else. Finally, on April 15, almost 22 hours exactly from his first post to the thread, plannedchaos fessed up and posted “I am Scott Adams.” Metafilter’s founder reported that plannedchaos confirmed his duplicitous identity as Scott Adams. What Adams did, creating a false persona and using that fictitious character in an Sockpuppet attempt to bolster his argument, is called creating a sockpuppet. theatre And sockpuppets really, really suck. Here’s why: 1.It’s fraud. Yes, I know there’s no Jamie Hyman Internet Police charging people with crimes online media dir. as they participate in discussions. But from Jamie@WatermarkOnline.com hopeful OKCupid daters to people hawking their wares on eBay, most internet users operate on the assumption that other people online at least vaguely resemble who they claim to be. When people lie about who they are—and yeah, I know some people think societal rules don’t count online and they can pretend to be whoever they want but I call those people liars—it’s a fraudulent and crummy thing to do. 2. It’s cowardly. When someone sets up a sockpuppet account to give themselves “attaboys” for all the totally sweet points they are making in an online argument, what they are actually saying is, “I am losing this argument. Either my points aren’t strong enough, or my communication skills are not up to the task, or both, but the point is that I he comic strip Dilbert has fallen off am failing. But Dilbert’s creator, imaginary friends to support me as I lose. I Scott Adams, recently pulled a move that am a loser, after all. It’s only fitting.” put him in the forefront for people like me 3. It’s sad. Try to imagine being so lonely who care about internet discussions and how and unconfident in your points of view they are moderated. If you are someone who that rather than working on ways to better occasionally (or obsessively) posts things on communicate your opinions or agreeing the internet, you should care, too. to disagree, you conclude that the only On April 9, Adams published an editorial reasonable option is dishonesty in the form about education in the Wall Street Journal. of a sockpuppet On April 12, the link representing a person was posted to popular who doesn’t even blog Metafilter.com, No one is forcing exist. Instead, either do some homework so that your opinions are more compelling and convincing, or merely shrug, get away from the computer and go take a walk around outside. That’s allowed, you know. as Adams, who announced as plannedchaos that he’s a “certified genius” would know better. But apparently not. He then proceeds to congratulate himself lavishly for his sockpuppetry on his own personal blog. Watermark’s sockpuppets either kept at it while I patiently deleted duplicate accounts over and over again, or self-imploded in a grand fashion. One notable incident led to the sockpuppet tracking me down on Facebook—as himself, oh my goodness, the horror brought by that level of honesty must have nearly choked the guy—rudely asking me a bunch of questions about why Big Bad Jamie wasn’t letting him fraudulently post as a gang of imaginary people then blocking me before I had a chance to answer. Erectile dysfunction got you down?

NOW THERE IS HOPE! Orlando based, Olympia Compounding Pharmacy is now offering powerful and reliable medication for erectile dysfunction. Let’s face it, no matter what your age, size, shape or sexual orientation, at some point most men have experienced erectile dysfunction. WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? There are many factors that can contribute to the onset and progression of erectile dysfunction. Prostate surgery, diabetes, low testosterone, poor circulation or side effects from other medications can all cause and worsen ED. PILLS NOT DELIVERING RESULTS? If you have tried to address your ED in the past, you have probably tried the “little blue pill” or other, similar pills. Unfortunately, these medications do not always work for everyone. Sometimes, due to medical conditions, you can not even safely take pills. And over 60% of the men who do take pills, have experienced uncomfortable side effects like headache, upset stomach, blurred version, etc. Olympia’s custom blend of FDA approved medications deliver fast, reliable results with none of the above side effects and its effectiveness is not compromised by food or alcohol.

WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT? The custom medication provided by Olympia delivers results in over 96% of patients with the very first dose. Olympia’s medication can be so finely customized, that you can choose the duration of your erection. 30 minutes, 60 minutes or more? It’s your choice. You can maintain an erection even after you climax! WHAT MAKES OLYMPIA UNIQUE? Olympia is one of the country’s leading compounding pharmacies and specializes in men’s sexual health. In fact, Olympia supplies many of the major ED clinics around the country with the same medications. Now through Olympia’s own network of physicians, or even your own primary care physician, you can be evaluated and prescribed this special blend of medication. Because Olympia is the compounder of the medication, you won’t pay inflated prices. In fact, their medication is a fraction of the cost of other ED treatments.

Sadly, sadly, the sun rose; it rose upon no sadder sight than the man of good abilities and good emotions, incapable of directed exercise, incapable of his own help and his own happiness.—A Tale of Two Cities

Carl was happiest on the beautiful yacht he owned with his father. It was remodeled in New Orleans, and together they’d maneuvered around Hurricane Katrina to get it back to Tampa Bay— quite an adventure. Carl would fill the yacht with food and drink and invite a boatful of friends to tour Boca Ciega Bay, most often out to the Skyway Bridge and back. Back at the marina he’d have a drink or two and lapse into his favorite character, Shirley Q. Liquor: “How you durrin?” I lost touch with Carl a couple years ago. I suspect his kitchen remodeling business had suffered during the housing bust, but to speculate beyond that would be like trying to create a portrait with only a few dots to connect. I don’t know why he jumped off that Skyway Bridge to his death last week. Certainly, by the means he chose, he wanted his exit to be noticed. Buddhists believe that suicide is a temporary solution to a permanent problem— the pain and suffering that is part of life. But they also teach that this pain is transient, understandable, and even instructive. There is a campaign to convince young, suicidal LGBTs to keep living—that “it gets better.” Just 43 at the time of his death, I wish this message had somehow resonated with Carl. The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists.—David Copperfield

Try to imagine what it took for Greg to become Gina, a process that no doubt continues. Then consider the unrealized dreams or ambitions that prevent the rest of us from living authentically, in small and big ways. If we could tap into just a portion of Gina’s courage, imagine the change that would result. Gina Duncan was created, not constructed. I suspect Greg loved her before she existed. And his courage likely sprang, at least in part, from an intense desire to introduce her to the rest of us.

ver the course of her extraordinary 20plus year career, Kylie Minogue has been a global force in pop music. She is one of the world’s most successful female artists with more than 60 million albums sold worldwide and 50 hit singles including the dance chart-toppers, “Love At First Sight,” “All The Lovers,” “Get Outta My Way,” and the Grammy-Award winning “Come Into My World.” With the release of her eleventh studio album, Aphrodite, the 42-year-old Minogue kicked off an ambitious world tour, which brings her glammy gams to Orlando’s Hard Rock Live Sunday, May 8. Orlando’s own DJ Scott Robert will be the opening performer. “The reaction to Aphrodite has been absolutely incredible and has inspired me and my creative team to develop a new show that will take all of us on a euphoric journey of joy, excitement and

Water for Elephants (Starring Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz)

Brand’s version reminds us of how much has changed in our world: the rich get richer, the poor suffer, and the famous get entirely too much credit for doing nothing besides being famous. Filthy-rich Brand plays an arrested adolescent whose drug of choice is alcohol. Nanny Mirren protects him from reality. Garner fights for Brand’s affection and money. Gerwig is the woman who Brand should love, but the drunken a-hole doesn’t deserve such a nice girl. Will he marry the bitch, or will he get the sweetheart? Wanna guess? There is not enough punch in this alcohol. Brand is funny, but he’s never totally likeable. His rough Cockney accent doesn’t jibe with his privileged upbringing. His lack of knowledge about real-world struggles is not cute; it’s frustrating. Mirren is nifty when she’s allowed to be vitriolic (in the same way that won Gielgud his Oscar). Mostly, though, her relationship with Brand seems Oedipal. Garner is merely Machiavellian. Only Gerwig is allowed to capture a level of the delight that Liza had in the original. Honestly, though, she should flee the immature Arthur. In fact, we all should just step away from this watereddown libation.

ater for Elephants, adapted from the bestselling book, is a traditional, Hollywood-style romance with a big heart and an interesting setting. That’s both its strength and its limitation. Pattinson (finally in a role that adults might find sexy) is a down-and-out immigrants’ son suffering through the Depression. On the day he was to take his final veterinary exam at Cornell, his parents die. He runs away and joins a circus owned by cruel ringmaster Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) and sexy but wimpy wifey Witherspoon. Patttinson falls into the couple’s graces, becoming the vet for the company. The job includes training a just-acquired elephant in order to save the struggling show. Of course, Pattinson and Witherspoon fall into forbidden love. The set of a struggling Depression-era circus is tantalizing and well realized. One can sense there is a fascinating world here, filled with performers, sideshow freaks, carnies and animals, all mistreated. The milieu is both rich and gritty, and the Win Win photography is sumptuous. (Starring Paul Giamatti, What doesn’t work is Genial Paul Giamatti in Win Win. is nuanced; Giamatti knows how to play these sighing, shrugging schlubs. His family and friends are also funny, and the intent is a quirky but heartfelt everyman comedy that recognizes our country’s current economic downturn. Then its strength drains from it. Teenaged Shaffer is fine for the disaffected part, but the real acting eludes him. His mother (the usually great Lewitsky) is flat and shrill. The last scenes of the movie lose all laughs. Though he took a few piano lessons when he was around six years old, Vaughn taught himself to play piano by ear. In 2004, his friend Dante Russo asked him to try his hand at composing music for a project; the result: Extraordinary. The play is about a nine-year-old who journeys through a couch to help his deaf cousin find her hearing. It won Outstanding Lyrics and Music at The 2005 New York International Fringe Festival and has received several other recognitions. Vaughn has since studied music theory and composition to solidify his craft. His other composing credits include The Johnny, The Night, Trip the Light Fantastic, and music for the web series Weiner & Weiner. “It’s more fun than anything for me,” he said of composing. “It’s kind of my little outlet.” Vaughn was part of the Broadway cast of Shrek the Musical, understudying the Farquaad role and performing it on the Great White Way a couple of times. O

f all the men in New York City who occasionally don women’s clothes and make-up, John Epperson is likely the city’s most famous. As Lypsinka, Epperson has created a multitude of award-winning stage productions. Still, he has a difficult time explaining his craft. “I don’t like the term ‘drag queen’ because it sounds amateurish and Halloween-ish,” says Epperson. “It is often used disparagingly. And I’m a little afraid of the term performance artist because it sounds a little brainy. I have gotten a reputation as a drag performer, who—when you go to see the show—you’re going to be expected to think. And I see no problem with that, but a lot of people don’t want to think!” At least his latest show, The Passion of the Crawford—which makes its Florida debut at Sarasota’s Asolo Theater for a one-night-only performance Monday, May 9—is somewhat easier to describe. WATERMARK: The Passion of the Crawford: is it an artistic tribute to Joan Crawford? JOHN EPPERSON: It is not exactly an impersonation of Joan Crawford, although I am made up and gowned and bewigged to look like her. The show is entirely lip-synched. whatever we feel is appropriate for that set or that visual representation of the song. So, I guess it is important. It’s great that I get to play with that. It can resonate however the audience wants to take it. There might be someone in the audience who sees how we represent sexuality and it will have a profound effect on them. Or there could be someone in the audience who thinks they’re just ugly costumes. [Laughs] I can’t fathom if I had to banish any of that from my show because it is such an important part.

“THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE STATES THAT MAKES ME WANT A BIG STACK OF PANCAKES OR SOMETHING.”

What’s your favorite part of the production? Oh, gosh. How long is a piece of string? There are so many different elements and I’m disappointed that we’re unable to bring them all to the states. I’m bringing everything that we can squeeze in. It’s a massive spectacle. The stage is mesmerizing. It’s so technically advanced. However, I genuinely think the best part is the emotion in the room. However we create that emotion it doesn’t matter, as long as we get to it. Did you ever consider that your 2002 hit single, “Can’t Get You Outta My Head” is not just being about a boy you can’t get out of your head but maybe a melody you couldn’t get out of your head? I don’t know that we specifically discussed that but I’m sure we made mention of [the fact] that we can’t get [the melody] out our heads. It’s a great play on words. I probably got through a verse and a chorus and I was in conniptions over it. [Laughs] I was like, “Please tell me I can have this song.” What song can’t you get out of your head? Britney’s new song, “He About to Lose Me.” I really like that track. I’m also listening to Adele. Like the rest of the world, I think she’s incredible. What is your favorite thing to do in the States that you can’t do anywhere else? Really crappy diners. I love a good, crappy American diner. I don’t know why. [Laughs] Really terrible coffee and food I wouldn’t normally eat. I’m not really a big junk food person. There’s something about the States that makes me want a big stack of pancakes or something. I can also walk around and not be recognized, which is refreshing. But your U.S. fan base is growing, right? There’s been this weird ripple of success in the States compared to other territories. I’m thrilled to be able to come back and share the ride with you. Sometimes I feel like [my fans and I] are all part of some kind of secret society. How do you mentally prepare yourself before going on tour? Sleepless nights and anxiety mixed with excitement. It’s demanding, mentally. The physical stuff and the fatigue I can deal with

—Kylie Minogue on her love of American diners.

but the mental execution of the show can be really difficult knowing what the show needs to entail before it debuts in front of audience. After that, you know it’s going to be the same show every time. Experience [has taught me] that we can only do as much as we can do. It’s almost a cruel twist of fate that opening night is the most reviewed because it’s the first night for me as well. You can have dress rehearsals and performances for friends and family but it’s not the same as having an audience. So, basically, I try to stay calm but then I realize I’m not going to be calm, so then I try to balance it out. Is there any ritual you do before you go on stage? A shot of Scotch helps. [Laughs] When my stage manager comes around with his mega phone—which he doesn’t need—you can hear him through lead. That’s when I realize I need to get a move on and finish my make-up. I do my own make-up; I find that’s a good part of the process. Then, by the 10 minute mark, I’m ready. When I walk onto the stage it’s like walking through the wardrobe into Narnia. Have you ever thought of doing a Vegas residency? That could be out of control! A few of us have talked about the luxury that would be to be able to be in one place. I’d be really excited

to do something like that. With Aphrodite coming out and the tour, have you had any time to think about new music or your next album? I’ve had a few meetings about what to do. Everything is pretty difficult at the moment. I’m tied down for the next few months and it hasn’t been that long since the release of Aphrodite. So, I don’t know how soon I want to rush into doing another pop album. I’m looking at opportunities for collaborations or performances that will keep the fans interested. One of those ideas is an anti-tour because we seem to be going bigger and bigger with the productions. It’s fantastic and it’s a spectacle but as with all parts of my life I try to find balance. I’ve never done anything where there are no dancers, there are no lights; it’s just music and me performing songs that are much loved by fans. Songs that would never ever be heard anywhere, especially in a live environment. I’m talking about B-sides or songs that were never meant to see the light of day, songs that were leaked and turned out to be quite popular, covers that I haven’t done yet. I think it’d be really cool to be in a tiny, tiny venue and maybe do like a week’s run somewhere and just strip everything back and [perform] songs that the fans would cry for. So, I have ideas like that that I think we could pull together without much fuss. The hardest part would be choosing the songs.

Going along with your gay iconic status, when was the first time you saw a Kylie Minogue drag queen and what your reaction? [Laughs] I was really surprised. This was back in the late 1980s when I was performing in Sydney. I heard there was a Kylie drag show going on at a gay club, The Aubrey. I had never heard of such a thing. I mean, I knew I had support from my gay audience; half of which were making my videos and doing my make-up. So, I really wanted to go but my management and security were like, “You’re not going there.” They thought I’d be crushed [by the fans]. So, I didn’t actually get to see the show but I heard about it and I was really excited. It wasn’t long after that, I performed at Mardi Gras in Sydney [where I actually got to see plenty of Kylie drag queens]. I was very touched, very excited, very curious and it’s been a love affair ever since. | l |

RENT American Stage in the Park presents RENT at Demens Landing in St. Petersburg through May 8.

9th Annual Orlando Cabaret Festival

The Innocents The very gay, The Innocents, plays at Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota through May 14.

Will and Anthony Nunziata are just a couple of the performers at the 9th Annual Orlando Cabaret Festival April 29-May 15.

[SANFORD] Cabaret

[CLEARWATER] One Night of Queen

The classic musical Cabaret is making an appearance at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center for two weekends. The sexy and decadent show will take the stage April 29 and 30, then May 6 and 7. All show times are 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 407-321-8111.

Freddie Mercury will forever be a gay icon. But for those among us who never got to see him perform live, we have One Night of Queen, starring Gary Mullen and The Works. The timeless anthems of Queen are done nearly identically to the original superstar of the 1970s—complete with white jumpsuits and that signature mustache. One Night of Queen returns to the Capitol Theater for, not surprisingly, one night only, on Thursday, May 5. For information and tickets visit RuthEckerdHall.com.

[ORLANDO] Orlando Cabaret Festival Mad Cow Theatre will host the 9th annual Orlando Cabaret Festival April 29–May 15. Artists from the New York cabaret scene will join Orlando-based performers in 45 performances of jazz, pop, Broadway, comedy, and a few surprises. Tickets are available online at OrlandoCabaret.com or by calling the box office at 407-297-8788.

theater [ST. PETERSBURG] RENT You’ve never seen RENT like this before. American Stage brings the Bohemian rock opera outdoors with its annual American Stage in the Park showcase at Demens Landing in St. Petersburg. A powerful, young cast will reinvigorate the powerful story of friends struggling to survivie in New York during the AIDS outbreak. The show runs through Sunday, May 8. Tickets are available at AmericanStage.org or by calling 727-823-7529.

[TAMPA] Shrek The Musical Dreamworks takes a stab at Disney’s success on Broadway with its Shrek The Musical, based on the original animated adventure. The cast features out Pinellas County native David Vaughn, who stars as Lord Farquaad. With 19 new songs, this live version of the popular ogre’s story is sure to have a few surprises and laughs in store. Shrek runs May 3-8 at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. For details and more information visit StrazCenter.org.

Dial M for Murder Frederick Knott’s thriller, Dial M for Murder is a classic tale of deceit, betrayal, and a “perfect crime” that goes very, very wrong. Tony Wendice, a charming, sophisticated ex-tennis player, has concocted a plot to murder his wife, Margot, and inherit her fortune. As with all foolproof schemes, of course, things don’t work out quite so well, and Tony’s “perfect crime” leads to some very unintended circumstances. The inspiration behind the Hitchcock movie starring Grace Kelly runs through Sunday, May 15. For tickets and information, visit CarrollwoodPlayers.org.

[LARGO] The Drowsy Chaperone The stage is set early in The Drowsy Chaperone when our host—a is-he-or-isn’t-he-gay musical fan—tells the audience about his favorite Broadway musical from the 1920s. As he shares his cast recording of the upcoming wedding of a Hollywood starlet, a chaperone who enjoys too much liquor and the secret identities of the kitchen staff, the stage comes alive with entertaining double entendres and special effects. Eight O’Clock Theatre takes on the Tony

Award-winning production at the Largo Cultural Center May 6-22. For details and tickets, visit EightOclockTheatre.com.

[SARASOTA] The Innocents Asolo Repertory Theatre presents the world premiere of The Innocents through May 14. The play by Pulitzer Prize-nominee Steven Drukman is a dark comic mystery set in the apartment of Daniel, a gay man who lives with his closest female friend, Edie. The pair’s family unit is threatened when two appealing young men enter the picture and turn their lives upside down. The entire play is set in San Francisco and touches on what it means to be American in the 21st century. For tickets and more information, visit AsoloRep.org.

tampa bay overheard Alleged Flamingo drama explodes on Facebook Facebook was alive with drama on April 25 and 26 when stories of an alleged verbal altercation between a resort manager and show performers surfaced on a performer’s profile. Kori Stevens posted her version of an expletive-ridden encounter with resort manager David Baker and it appeared that the entire show cast was let go in the process. Her post on Facebook tagged Baker, the resort, other entertainers, Watermark and a slew of others. In response, The Flamingo posted an apology, which was also tagged by many and was flooded with responses. Even a Facebook polling app was created, pitting Team Flamingo vs. Team Kori Stevens. Watermark isn’t going to go into details as to what allegedly happened because Baker wasn’t available for comment and it was unclear if performance staff was actually fired, according to management. When a manager for the resort was reached by Watermark he did say that the resort’s regular Saturday and Sunday female impersonation shows will continue. However, he couldn’t say who would perform, since he hadn’t spoken with Baker about the details when we contacted him on April 26. Baker’s e-mail address returned a note that he was out of the office until later in the week. The manager

reached added that while he was on the property during the alleged altercation, he was not in the room when it happened so he wasn’t sure on the details. He did say the situation would be addressed. For the story—at least the Facebook version—search both Stevens’ profile and the “Flamingo Fla” profile on the social networking site.

Pro Shop Pub hits 35 year mark It was literally a packed house on April 23 when crowds descended upon the state’s “oldest, continually owned gay bar,” the Pro Shop Pub in Clearwater. Manager Steven Pearson welcomed guests throughout the night and patrons shared stories of the club’s historic and iconic past. Several politicians—including Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner and St. Petersburg City Coucilman Steve Kornell sent notes congratulating the establishment on its anniversary and Largo Commission candidate Michael Smith and his partner were spotted greeting the crowd. Before the anniversary celebration, the bar was featured in a large—and positive—St. Petersburg Times article announcing the milestone. Congrats to the staff—both past and present—of the Pro Shop Pub on an amazing 35 years.

Dishing dogma The University of Central Florida hosted a caucus regarding same-sex marriage on April 21. More than 175 turned out for the event, which featured renowned anti-gay preacher, Dr. Michael L. Brown and was to be moderated by John Stemberger—the man behind 2008’s “Marriage Protection Amendment.” Stemberger was dropped at the last minute but no reason was given. OneOrlando.org reported that even though anti-gay extremists turned out in large numbers, the faculty moderator kept the discussion in-check and did not allow the debate to venture into religious dogma. Brown authors anti-gay propaganda, like A Queer Thing Happened to America and hosts a syndicated radio program. The purpose of the debate was to tackle questions on homosexuality and family morals in America.

oing on a cruise can be a fun, exhilarating and exciting experience. Going on a gay cruise has the added benefit of spending time among like-minded people, where you can be totally out and open with your partner or “cruising” the single scene as well. “For those of us who live in major urban centers or parts of the country where being gay isn’t a big deal, we forget that there are others in areas where it is virtually impossible to live life as an openly gay person,” said Jeff Gundvaldson, president of RSVP cruise lines. “For those people, going on a gay cruise may give them an experience like they’ve never had before...where they can hold their partner’s hand in public and no one will think twice about it.” Established in 1985, RSVP Vacations is the originator of the gay and lesbian cruise concept. Founder Kevin J. Mossier had a bold, new idea—to provide a safe, tailor-

The Water Wall is one of many downtown attractions in Houston catering to the arts crowd. Photo courtesy Greater Houston CVB

Houston mayor Annise Parker was elected in 2009 and is the first out mayor of a major U.S. City.

The nation’s fourth largest city reaches out to LGBT travelers | steve blanchard

H

ouston | Texas may get a bad wrap. The largest state in the continental U.S. is often viewed as ultraconservative or as “Bush Country” by many LGBTs. Many may rather bypass the Longhorn State on their way west rather than enjoying the state’s history and culture. But things have shifted—especially in Houston, where lesbian mayor Annise Parker became the first out mayor of a major U.S. city in 2009. “Her election galvanized the LGBT community here and really got us international attention as an open and friendly place to visit and to live,” says A.J. Mistretta, a public relations manager with the Houston Convention and Visitors’ Bureau. He is also the editor of MyGayHouston.com. “But beyond that, we are a top destination for the arts. We have a museum district with more than 18 institutions within walking distance.” Mistretta said that the CVB began marketing to LGBT travelers even before Parker’s election because it realized it was a niche market too often overlooked. “We decided this is a market that travels a lot and that doesn’t know about Houston as a destination,” Mistretta says. “ Cultural diversity Since the New Orleans native moved to Houston, Mistretta has offered tips and suggestions for countless numbers of travelers hoping to experience as much of Houston as possible. The city’s light rail system makes the need for a car obsolete and the downtown area attractions are affordable with Houston’s “City Pass.” “It’s a discount book of tickets to attractions and destinations,” Mistretta explains. “You get

five passes to places that include museums, the zoo and the Space Center.” The book is $39 and is a 41% discount on the attractions as opposed to buying admittance separately. Downtown Houston is perfect for LGBT vacationers, Mistretta adds, because of its convenience. “Downtown is in the heart of everything,” he says. “You can catch the rail to the Montrose gay district to the museum district to the Reliant Center to catch a game.” Nightlife While economies throughout the country are seeing bars and clubs closing, Houston has recently welcomed two large LGBT clubs. F Bar opened in March and The Vue debuted in April. “This shows the attraction of LGBTs to the community,” Mistretta says. “We’re excited about that.” F Bar is an upscale club boasting 4,200square-feet of space in the heart of the Montrose “gayborhood” district. Chandeliers, elaborate wall coverings, velvet drapes and a glassed-in lounge area give a very Palm Beach-style feel. The Vue Nightclub is a second-story dance factory offering dramatic views of downtown. “Houston has a tremendous number of gay bars and clubs,” Mistretta says. “There’s a lively nightlife mix.” Guava Lamp, Meteor, J.R.’s and South Beach are just a few of the other local favorite gathering spots, according to MyGayHouston. com. For the bears and Levi/leather men, there’s the Montrose Mining Co., which is not shy about its cruisy atmosphere.

Houston prides itself on its artistic displays and even incorporates that into its street sign. Photo courtesy Greater Houston CVB

The male attraction While Houston has an active lesbian community, Mistretta admits that the city is very popular among single, professional gay men. With a slew of Fortune 500 countries calling the “Space City” home, a constant stream of young professionals seem to move into the area each year. “We definitely trend toward gay men,” Mistretta says. “It’s not that the lesbian community isn’t active—it is. But Houston has become a young, single, gay male city.” According to a 2010 study by the Houston Business Journal, more than two dozen Fortune 500 companies call the city home. ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil Corp. are both located in Houston. And, non-oil-related companies like food services giant Sysco Corp. and limited partnership holding company Enterprise GP Holdings both reside in the city. Understanding community Houston is vibrant, modern and very accepting, according to Mistretta. “We are not the backwoods Texas community a lot of people might think,” he says. “What is

interesting to me in developing MyGayHouston. com is the number of bars reaching out to the gay community. We’re not talking just about ‘gay bars.’ Mainstream bars and restaurants are LGBT friendly here and I highlight them when I can. There really isn’t anywhere here where people will feel uncomfortable.” While LGBT-specific events happen throughout the year, Houston’s largest event is Houston Pride, which is Saturday, June 25 this year. A week-long schedule of events entices nearly 200,000 LGBT people and allies. Houston Pride boasts one of the largest night time parades in the country. “Pride is the highlight of our LGBT calendar,” Mistretta says. “But we have so many other events. We just wrapped Bunnies on the Bayou, which is a huge Easter weekend dance party. It’s a lot of fun. We also have a coming out celebration in October that coincides with National Coming Out Day.” Houston attracts visitors from throughout the country but mostly from surrounding cities like Dallas, Austin an even New Orleans. “Houston and acceptance stretches pretty far,” Mistretta says. “I don’t feel uncomfortable in any Texas town, really. | l |

F

lorida is obviously a vacation destination for many LGBT travelers. The vast beaches, the incredible weather and the scantily clad men and women at hotel pools and resorts have lured countless travelers to the Sunshine State.

But in the past few years, LGBT Pride festivals like St. Pete Pride, Come Out With Pride in Orlando and Stonewall Pride in Fort Lauderdale have striven to become “destination Pride” events. The growth of all three shows the marketing plans are working.

Large Pride events around the world have marketed to a global market of travelers and have become motivating factors in bringing in guests to the large cities. Here is a look at some of the larger LGBT Pride festivals around the world and their enticing vacation lures. New York City Gay Pride The Stonewall Riots of 1969 launched the modern Gay Pride movement, so its no wonder that New York City Gay Pride has one of the best-attended and bestadvertised LGBT Pride events on the planet. NYC Pride advertises a full week of activities bookended by a rally and a huge parade. New York City Gay Pride is organized by Heritage of Pride, and the 2011 grand marshals are Dan Savage and Terry Miller of the “It Gets Better” campaign, and New York MCC Pastor Pat Bumgartner. The 2011 Pride march begins at noon on Sunday, June 26 and an estimated 500,000 participants are expected to walk along 36th Street and Fifth Avenue. For details on NYCGP, visit NYCPride. org. Amsterdam Gay Pride Pride weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year for Amsterdam, and the city understands that. A massmarketing campaign reaches a global market and a long list of hotels serving as “official” Amsterdam Gay Pride sponsors ensure an ever-growing attendance. In 2010, AGP brought nearly 400,000 revelers to the Dutch city. This year, the celebration is July 30Aug. 7 and the annual Canal Parade is at 2 p.m. on Aug. 6. For more information, visit AmsterdamGayPride.nl.

San Francisco Gay Pride Often, San Francisco is considered the gayest city in the United States, so it’s understandable that the Gay Pride Festival taking place there every summer is considered one of the best. This year, San Francisco Pride is June 25 and 26 and it will celebrate 41 years. The theme is “In Pride We Trust” and more than 200 parade contingents are expected in 2011. What San Francisco Gay Pride doesn’t have in its parade—the route is one of the shortest in the country—it makes up in its festive atmosphere. It’s main stage provides entertainment right next to City Hall and is one of the few Pride organizations that selects grand marshals based on public votes. This year, nearly 3,000 people voted and chose Dr. Aaron Belkin, SFSU professor and key advocate to repeal DADT), Victoria Kolakowski (first openly elected transgender Superior Court judge), Christiana Remington (community activist and event producer), Terry Stewart (defense attorney, challenger of Prop. 8), Rev. Roland Stringfellow (builder of relationships between the LGBT and religious communities), and Graylin K. Thornton (Leather Community activist and past-board member for New Leaf Services), as its grand marshals. Estimates vary when it comes to attendance, but most agree that somewhere between 450,000-500,000 people attend the annual festival. This year’s parade is on Sunday, June 26. Visit SFPride.org for more information. Atlanta Gay Pride The 41st Atlanta gay Pride festival is scheduled to coincide with National Coming Out Day in October. The 2011 celebration is Oct. 8-9 in Piedmont Park. The annual festival and march brings

in corporate sponsors and in 2010, Atlanta Pride’s most successful year financially, Delta Airlines served as a presenting sponsor. Over the past few years, the festival has changed locations due to drought conditions, but organizers say they are working to keep the celebration in Piedmont Park for the foreseeable future. It was in that park in 1970—a year after the Stonewall Riots—that activists handed out literature to passersby. There was no march or parade that first year. For more information on Atlanta Gay Pride, visit AtlantaPride.org. Chicago Gay Pride Chicago made Gay Pride history in 2010 when the Stanley Cup made its debut in an LGBT festival. The Chicago Blackhawks team and representatives displayed the National Hockey League’s holy grail for the first time, taking the 42-year-old Pride festival to a whole new level. Each year, the Chicago Gay Pride parade steps off from the corner of Halsted & Belmont the last Sunday in June. There’s also a pride run and a big pride festival with speakers and performers. Details on the 2011 Chicago Gay Pride festival weren’t available at press time, but the Chicago Tribune reported that nearly 400,000 people attended in 2010. For more information, visit ChicagoPrideCalendar.org. Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras American LGBTs know the birth of the current gay rights movement happened at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. For our Australian brothers and sisters, a similar event spurned that nation’s pride movement in 1978, when police revoked a permit for a Gay Pride parade and arrested 51 people. Today, the

t. Petersburg | Now in its 9th year, St. Pete Pride has raised the bar for Pride celebrations throughout Florida. In the past, upwards of 70,000 people have converged on the Grand Central District for a huge parade and street festival… and then mostly turned around and went home. But this year, St. Pete Pride hopes to become a “destination Pride” like those in major markets like New York and San Francisco. And why not? The striking new Salvador Dali Museum is just one attraction in an increasingly cosmopolitan waterfront downtown filled with parks, museums, shops, galleries and restaurants. And just a few minutes west, the Gulf of Mexico and some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet beckon. There’s also a thriving local LGBT community with popular bars, restaurants, a retail district and an all-gay resort. The official St. Pete Pride calendar of events includes activities every day leading up to the huge Saturday, June 25 Promenade and Street Festival. Expect huge crowds for the Friday night Pride Kickoff Party at Georgie’s Alibi. After the Street Festival winds down on Saturday afternoon, Watermark and ALandCHUCK.travel are inviting everybody to the award-winning Postcard Inn for a pool and dance party right on St. Pete Beach. The 200-room beachfront hotel will be an all-gay resort—and party— throughout the weekend, with a Fire Party early Friday evening, Saturday’s big post-Pride Ice Party cool-off, and a Beach Party starting Sunday morning. There’s also a women’s Heatwave Party on Saturday night sponsored by MyQmunity. com and Phish Phest Orlando. Activities throughout the weekend are organized by Outings&Adventures. Now in its second year, the all-gay Flamingo Resort will be a hub of activity throughout St. Pete Pride weekend, with spillover bookings expected at nearby hotels. Expect the entire property to be packed all week, and especially during Flamingo’s Pride Tea-Dance on Sunday afternoon and evening. So this year, expect to see rainbow flags from the beach to the bay throughout St. Pete Pride weekend. If you’re looking for a great staycation, visit StPetePride. com for information and links.

departure ports in south Florida and Tampa. He noted about 12-18% of those aboard RSVP cruises are residents of the Sunshine State and about 60% of the travelers are couples. While the cruise line caters to primarily gay men, about 5-8% of each cruise includes lesbians. “Everyone is welcome,” Gundvaldson said. Finding Atlantis Many see RSVP and Atlantis as competing companies. But in fact, both are owned by the same parent company. Atlantis Events, Inc., the world’s largest company specializing in all-gay and lesbian cruises and resort vacations, announced in 2007 that it had chartered the world’s largest passenger ship—Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas—for an all-gay Caribbean sail. Atlantis charters entire cruise ships and all-inclusive resorts for the exclusive use of its LGBT guests, and then completely customizes the experience with unique and diverse entertainment, special parties and activities and teams of talented hosts. Since 1991, Atlantis has hosted more than 100,000 guests on more than 90 different cruise, resort and tour experiences. Freedom of the Seas is a 3,700-passenger megaship.

“Freedom sets a new standard in the cruise industry with innovative settings for unique guest experiences throughout,” said Rich Campbell, Atlantis CEO. “Royal Caribbean has clearly raised the bar in terms of what is possible in cruising today. to our gay and lesbian guests. In 2012, the ship will sail from Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 29, 2012 with stops in Cozumel, Costa Maya, Mexico and Labadee, Haiti. Campbell said the cruise was already about 50% booked. Atlantis also offers its signature cruise each February aboard the Allure of the Seas. It offers guests a dizzying choice of activities and experiences and even includes seven distinctive neighborhoods—including Central Park and the Boardwalk. There is also a flying zip line, high-dive shows and cocktails served at a three-story bar. One of the most popular attractions is the FlowRider, which allows guests to surf 150feet above the ocean’s surface. Long-time connections For many guests on LGBT cruises, the vacation can turn into a reunion, of sorts. Campbell said that many people return year after year and develop lasting friendships on board that they renew at each year’s cruise. “Our guest response to this first Allure of the Seas sailing was incredible, with the charter selling out in three weeks with no advertising whatsoever,” said Campbell. “Our guests always want the newest and most exciting experiences in the world. So much of what we are creating onboard is the culmination of 20 years of experience and getting to know what our guests really love.” Al Ferguson, who owns Legendary Journeys in Sarasota with is partner, Chuck Scott, has helped countless LGBTs discover a love of cruises and recently burst onto the national scene as a large sponsor of RuPaul’s Drag Race on Logo. “For the gay market, cruising is gaining in popularity,” Ferguson told Watermark in a 2010 interview. “Of course, there are the gay charters and they are great, but that product is very finite. What is growing is

‘cruise-within-a-cruise’ gay cruises. This means the cruise is a general interest traditional straight cruise but the ship is catering to large gay groups aboard with parties, dining and entertainment.” Atlantis has several other major cruises planned in 2011, including an exotic Southern Caribbean Cruise in March, its 20th Anniversary Mediterranean Cruise this summer and a Mexican Riviera Cruise on Holland America’s Oosterdam in October. That Sweet female attraction While Atlantis and RSVP have a firm hold on cruises for gay men, lesbians have two companies vying for their cruising affections as well—Olivia and Sweet. Sweet is a lesbian travel company with a twist. Merging the best of lesbian travel with social and environmental awareness, all of Sweet’s vacations are carbon neutral, meaning they offset the pollution created by their air, land and sea travel. The company travels to amazing places with the very best lesbian entertainers and parties, while also supporting guests’ personal enrichment, raising money for worthwhile causes and doing meaningful projects all over the world. “Sweet is for women who want to do it all on their vacations and in their lives,” says Susan Wentworth, a founding partner of Sweet and the company’s CFO. “It’s about making life as sweet as possible.” According to Wentworth, Sweet is focused on celebrating the accomplishments of its guests and encourages those on board to celebrate together. Oh, Olivia Probably the most recognized name in lesbian travel is Olivia, which was originally founded as a women’s record label in 1973. Today, Olivia is the largest promoter of lesbian travel and services in the world, chartering entire ships, resorts and tours ranging from intimate boutique voyages in the Galapagos and France to Caribbean cruises on ships holding 2,000 women. “Olivia was created to serve a lesbian market that ranges from women who must live quietly in suburbia, to women who have the freedom to walk the streets holding hands,” says Olivia founder and president Judy Dlugacz. “I am extremely blessed to have been part of this amazing experience.” Olivia has pulled in some major stars to entertain. Headliners include Melissa Etheridge, kd lang, Heart and The Indigo Girls. Sports stars (Sheryl Swoops, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Rosie Jones, Diana Nyad) and comedians (Margaret Cho, Whoopi Goldberg, Lily Tomlin) are no stranger to Olivia, either. Olivia has also recently rolled out its Sisters at Sea™ and Sisters at Play™ programs, which are designed for lesbians of color and their friends and provide special programming and activities onboard or at the resort. | l |

Dear Truth, I’m having problems with my roommate. I moved in with Theo about six months ago and I swear he hits on my friends, including guys I bring home to hook up with. Theo is almost ten years older than me (I’m 23) and whenever I invite someone over, he hangs around the apartment (shorts, no shirt) and chats them up. I’ve tried to give him the hint that I don’t want him around, but it’s his place and I don’t feel right asking him to leave. Kobe Bryant fined, apologizes for anti-gay slur

Tampa, Atlanta dominate Easter softball

wire report

Teams from Tampa and Atlanta combined to take seven of the top nine slots in three divisions at the 2011 Southern Shootout softball tournament held over Easter weekend in Birmingham, Alabama. The Tampa Panthers were crowned champions of the D division

The National Basketball Association fined Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers $100,000 earlier this month for “offensive and inexcusable” comments he made during a game, the league said in a statement. Bryant called a referee a “faggot” after receiving a technical foul in a game against the San Antonio Spurs. In a phone call a few days later to Joe Solomonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, Bryant apologized for using the slur, the commission said in a statement. “We had a very sincere conversation in which he expressed his heartfelt regret for the hurt that his words caused,” Solomonese said. “At the end of a difficult day, I applaud Kobe for coming forward and taking responsibility for his actions.” Earlier, Bryant issued a statement saying his remarks should not be taken literally. “My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period,” he said. “The words expressed do not reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were not meant to offend anyone.” But, said NBA Commissioner David Stern in a statement, “Kobe Bryant’s comment during [the] game was offensive

and inexcusable. While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated. Accordingly, I have fined Kobe $100,000. Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable.” The Human Rights Campaign said earlier it supported the fine. “We applaud Commissioner Stern for not only fining Bryant but for recognizing that slurs and derogatory comments have no place on the basketball court or in society at large,” Solomonese said. “ GLAAD issued a statement supporting the decision. “The NBA has sent a clear message to sports fans everywhere that anti-gay slurs have no place in the game,” said Jarrett Barrios, president of GLAAD. “This decision will serve as an important precedent that will help ensure a safer, more inclusive environment for fans and players everywhere.” Since the controversy, Bryant participated in a Public Service Announcement to be played before all Lakers games battling bullying based on race, religion and sexual orientation. | l |

briefs Team fined for fans’ homophobic slurs The Brazilian volleyball team Sada Cruzeiro received a fine of $30,000 after its fans chanted “Bicha” (faggot) at Michael, a gay player for Volei Futuro, during an April 2 playoff match. The story became huge news in Brazil after the crowd’s action, which led Michael to come out publicly. In the second game of the playoff, on Volei Futuro’s home court, fans came dressed in pink clothes and carrying pink thunder sticks in a raucous support for Michael.

NBA’s Hill, Dudley create GLSEN PSA

Phoenix Suns forward Grant Hill and Jared Dudley shot a public service announcement for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and the Ad Council’s ‘Think Before You Speak’ campaign on April 19, urging kids not to use anti-LGBT language. The campaign was shot just hours before Kobe Bryant used an anti-gay slur against a referee during the Lakers game. GLSEN says that the NBA was fully invested in the campaign before the Kobe incident.

he word for this week is “schadenfreude.” While I like to think I’m not a bad person, I do often find humor in other people’s misfortunes— but I find even more humor at my own misfortunes! I recently mentioned that I had the harrowing task of taking new publicity photos. While I was struggling through a photo session, Kirstie Alley was dropped like a ton of bricks on Dancing with the Stars. It was like Christmas came a bit early this year. The only thing that could have made it funnier was if Derek Hough had been her partner! At the exact moment I learned of her fall, I was looking at my photos. Suddenly, nothing was very funny. There’s nothing like looking at untouched HD photos of yourself to realize how old you’ve gotten. It’s not that I look bad for my age—it’s just that I often forget what that age actually is! The next thing on my agenda was heading to Palm Springs for Jeffrey Sanker’s White Party. My co-host on the white carpet was the hilarious Shawn Pelofsky. It was our first time working together and we had a blast. One of the hallmarks of a Sanker event is that many of the same people come together year after year This year was no exception and the feeling of celebration was in the air. When I was given the list of luminaries I’d

be interviewing on the white carpet, I spotted the name Reichen. As is probably common knowledge, Reichen and I have a checkered past. Without getting too personal, we’re genuinely fond of each other which is what led to being hurt by some things that went down (that’s a really nice way of giving you virtually no details).
