Rays outfielder Johnny Damon reads through his lines on cue cards while director Jeff Klein preps the camer during the filming of the team's "It Gets Better" video at Tropicana Field. | Photo by David Schauer

Rays say,

‘It Gets Better’

The team becomes the 9th MLB team to participate in the online campaign against gay bullying

S

t. Petersburg | Walking onto the field of the Tropicana feels like a scene from a classic sports movie. The smell of the dirt lining the baseline is mixed with the faint scent of hotdogs and nachos. The domed field feels much larger when standing on the grass than it does cheering in the stands—and there’s an eerie feeling to the place when the massive television screen is off, its speakers are silenced and the vast expanse is mostly empty. But on Aug. 23, Tropicana Field was all about positivity. That’s the day the Tampa Bay Rays made a statement about anti-gay bulling—and its only the ninth Major League Baseball team to do so. Four players and head coach Joe Madden agreed to participate in a public service announcement for the “It Gets Better” campaign, the YouTube phenomenon created by columnist Dan Savage that encourages LGBT teens to push through the tough high school years and conquer adulthood. Contributors to the campaign include people from around the world and celebrities like President Barack Obama and singer Adam Lambert. Local mainstream media covered the

Rays’ announcement about the video for the past few weeks and Watermark had a story with SwellFella Productions’ Jeff Klein, who directed the Rays’ IGB video. Of course, Watermark has covered similar “It Gets Better” contributions from other professional sports teams in the past—although most of those stories were on our sports page and came from press releases and wire reports. This time we had the opportunity to spent more than four hours with the filmmakers, members of our community and Rays players who stepped up to record a video with a powerful message directed at America’s LGBT youth. A slow, anxious start Waiting outside the Tropicana at 2 p.m., there’s very little activity. A few groundskeepers are milling around in golf carts and a security guard is eyeing me, wondering what I’m doing. Soon, however, the film crew shows up. Klein, along with Brian Longstreth—who was instrumental in getting the Rays on board for the project—show up with camera men, sound professionals and script writer and St. Pete Pride executive director Chris Rudisill.

When asked if he’s ready, Klein replies with a simple, “I’m looking forward to this.” Since no media was allowed to attend the taping of this PSA, Klein put me on as a member of the video crew. I was in charge of running a small Flip video camera to record behind-the-scenes video for a secondary production showing the making of the PSA. I wasn’t press and Watermark wasn’t even discussed. I couldn’t ask the players any interview-like questions and photos of the players were provided by the film crew, not taken by me directly. Awaiting the Rays By 2:30 p.m., the film crew is standing on the turf of the Tropicana Field just outside the Rays’ dugout. Former St. Pete Pride co-chair and photographer David Schauer has set up the lighting rig for the shoot and soundman Bill Heller is testing the microphone. It seems there’s a small problem—the mic isn’t picking up enough sound. Both Klein and Heller are snapping their fingers in front of it, hoping it will pick up some noise. “Worst case scenario we’ll get sound from the secondary mics on the cameras,” Klein says, not showing any sign of worry. “We’ll be

steve blanchard

fine.” Soon after, Heller gives Klein the thumbs up. It seems the microphone is working fine and is ready for our first Rays player. Second baseman Sean Rodriguez is ready early, so he comes out and shakes hands with the members of the crew. Meet the Rays The handsome young player is all smiles as he meets with Klein and learns that his lines are neatly printed on cue cards held by Duffy Iorio, who most locals know from his longtime gig at Georgie’s Alibi. Klein instructs Rodriguez to read the simple statements on the cards and then asks if he could read them in Spanish. The thing is, not all the phrases translate to Spanish well, so the crew starts using their phones to find appropriate alternatives. “I could try to say that but I don’t know the translation,” Rodriguez explains. “That could be embarrassing.” After some laughs, Rodriguez is ready and reads his lines loudly and with no hesitation in one take. The entire process takes less than five minutes. Continued on page 16 | uu |

Teacher who made anti-gay Facebook comments back to class jamie hyman

l

al

Lake County | A teacher suspended for making anti-gay posts on Facebook is back in the classroom. Jerry Buell, Mt. Dora High School’s Teacher of the Year, was suspended from his classroom position after making a number of anti-gay posts on Facebook, saying he “almost threw up” after hearing about the decision to legalize same sex marriage in New York. Buell was working in an administrative position while the district’s human resources department investigated the complaints against him. That investigation wrapped up the afternoon of Aug. 24, according to Lake County Schools communications officer Chris Patton. “As a result, Mr. Buell received a written directive from the superintendent,” he said. “By law, the written directive is not public record until 10 days after completion of the investigation.” Buell was back in the classroom the morning of Aug. 25. Information about whether he was on probation or under observation is off the record as part of the rules guarding the directives, but Patton said, “As always, the school district will continue to monitor the classroom environment to ensure the safety of students throughout the district.” Buell spoke to the media after his meeting with the superintendent reinstating him in the classroom, saying: “If I did not stand up for my rights after telling my students to stand up for their rights then I would be a hypocrite. It’s been a lesson. It’s been a heck of a lesson.” In August, Watermark received an email that copied Buell’s posts. On July 25, the teacher called gay marriage a “cesspool” and “an insult to the marriage between my wife and I [sic].” Buell then continued to defend his anti-gay statements through religious justifications, saying they are “based on

Biblical principals [sic] and God’s law.” The email was sent by Brett Winters, 27, a former Mt. Dora High School student. “The fact that the comments on his page receive more than 30 ‘likes’ is even more disturbing because it makes you wonder is this the behavior that Lake County approves of, especially since he was elected teacher of the year,” Winters said. Buell has not returned calls from Watermark requesting an interview, but he told the Orlando Sentinel that he’s “had kids that I’ve known who have been homosexuals. They know that I don’t hate them. I love them.” The investigation contains Winters’ original complaints plus Buell’s yearbook description, school web page and several course outlines. In each document, Buell discusses his religion, frequently mentioning that he is a “man of God.” The investigation also includes an email exchange regarding a speech Buell was asked to give as Teacher of the Year at an academic honors assembly. According to the emails, Buell was specifically asked not to mention religion in his speech but then proceeded to frequently reference the Bible. Patton said the documents were included in the investigation to “paint the whole picture.” He said they’re continuing to get heavy feedback, including comments from people who have not yet heard Buell is back in class. Patton said the district has received close to 3,000 emails from around the nation on the incident, and they’re a “mixed bag,” with no clear majority opinion regarding Buell’s actions, suspension or reinstatement. There are currently no GSA or any other LGBT-targeted youth groups at Mt. Dora High School, and the only support available for gay students is the counseling available to all students. However, the district developed social media guidelines this winter for teachers and staff, warning teachers against posting publicly online if they feel angry or passionate about a topic. | l |

Orlando | No more iron is being pumped at the popular downtown location of Metro 25/7 Gym on E. Robinson St. According to gym co-owner Marciano Weber, the gym has been forced to vacate the location. “We’re in the middle of a lawsuit,” he said. “There’s a lot at stake, especially since we’ve been a pivotal business for the gay/lesbian community downtown for eight years. We’re not being treated properly.” The owners rent the facility that houses the gym. Weber said there is a hole in the roof and potholes in the parking lot.

“These are things we have no control over and money we pay monthly should have taken care of things,” he said. “[The landlords] are not spending money, but we’re losing members because the building is falling apart.” Weber said they’re currently looking for new locations downtown and members can use any of the other 25/7 locations. “We did not intend to leave, we don’t want to leave and we’re coming back,” he said. “It’s just a matter of getting the facility.” Members who wish to cancel can do so without a fee and members paid in full will be refunded. Month-to-month members will be handled on a case-by-case basis. All members wishing to cancel should email metro257gymorlandorefund@gmail.com. | l |

GOP Senate hopefuls make antigay stances clear wire report Orlando | The major Republican Senate candidates are largely in agreement on gay marriage—they’re not in favor. The candidates weighed in at an Aug. 20 debate hosted by the notoriously anti-gay group The Florida Family Policy Council, which organized the effort to put a gay marriage ban in Florida’s constitution. The West Orlando Tea Party co-sponsored the event. Some of the biggest applause lines during the two-and-a-half hour debate came when candidates called for cutting ties to the United Nations, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, making abortion illegal in most cases and keeping gays and lesbians from getting married or being protected under hate crime laws. Half of the debate was devoted to questions on social issues and the other half to questions about federal spending, the federal government versus states’ rights and similar issues. The candidates—former Sen. George LeMieux, former state Rep. Adam Hasner, retired Army Col. Mike McCalister and former Ruth’s Chris CEO Craig Miller— all said they oppose embryonic stem cell research, same-sex marriage and civil unions, providing gays and lesbians protection under hate crime laws, internet gambling and the recent deal to raise the nation’s debt ceiling. “I’m opposed to same-sex marriage whether it’s in New York or Florida or elsewhere,’’ Hasner said. ``In every state where the voters have the opportunity, even in California, they’ve defended an institution of marriage between one man and one woman.’’ McCalister, however, stood out in saying that while he opposes gay marriage, he thinks it should be an issue that’s left up to the states. | l |

AIDS Walk slowly approaching its goal steve blanchard St. Petersburg | Despite the tough economy and participants’ knack for procrastinating with donations, Jay Aller is optimistic that the eighth annual AIDS Walk St. Petersburg will reach its fundraising goal of $100,000. “We are definitely going to hit that goal,” said Aller, who is the Suncoast Hospice’s staff partner with the walk this year. “We’ve had a lot of community fundraisers and community involvement this year. St. Pete Pride has done its own things, the Flamingo has done a few fundraisers and so has Georgie’s. They’re all raising money to donate to their own teams, which comes to ASAP. We’re well ahead of where I thought we’d be.” At press time, a digital tracker on the Walk’s web site showed that just over $42,000 had been raised. Aller said that the last two weeks before the walk usually see a large push of funds and participants. “So far we’re right on par with the past averages,” Aller said. “We’ll see a surge of more money and more people.” Aller expects somewhere between 600 and 1000 people—which is more than what the walk has averaged in the past. Part of that draw could be related to Frenchie Davis’ performance following the walk. “I think she’ll bring people in just to hear her sing,” he said. “And while they are there we’re hopeful they will donate to the cause.” Having a headliner isn’t the only change

in the annual walk. This year the event has been organized with a committee, headed by chairman Dale Kitt of Olympus Printing. The group effort, Aller said, seems to be paying off. The AIDS Walk St. Petersburg is on Saturday, Sept. 10, at North Shore Park in St. Petersburg at the intersection of 12th Avenue North and North Shore Drive. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the 5K (just over three miles) walk begins at 10 a.m. Several special ceremonies will take place before the walk starts. Paul Lloyd, who won the Talent Quest Florida singing competition in July, will sing the national anthem and Una Voce: The Florida Men’s Chorale has a special presentation to go along with the tolling of the AIDS bells, which honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. The opening ceremonies will be emceed by grand marshal Chuck Henson, Bay News 9 traffic anchor. “The money we raise goes toward ASAP’s many services, like the pediatric program, which serves more than 100 kids,” Aller said. “It also helps fund the mobile testing unit that provides free HIV tests throughout Tampa Bay.” Those registering online may see that the walk is more than a one day event this year. A special VIP reception with Davis is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9, at The Flamingo Resort. Tickets are $50 and include an open bar beginning at 7 p.m. For more information on AIDS Walk St. Petersburg or to register or donate, visit AIDSWalkStPetersburg.com. | l |

Morgan Stanley supports Diversity staff report Sarasota | Sarasota Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota, has a new, well-known supporter. The Morgan Stanley Foundation made a charitable gift of $2,000 to the singing group, which is made up of LGBT singers from throughout the Sarasota region. “Morgan Stanley Smith Barney employees continuously demonstrate their commitment to strengthening and supporting our communities,” said complex manager Stan Carter. “This gift from the Foundation offers us an additional opportunity to make a difference in the communities and neighborhoods in which we live and work. It’s a great pleasure that on a local level we are able to donate to Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota.” The ties between the financial services giant and the chorus go deeper than the donation. Advisor Turner C. Moore has worked as an advisor to the group and was happy to learn about the grant’s approval. Beverly Alter, president of Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota, expressed the group’s appreciation for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney’s support, which will help “to defray [Diversity's] costs and contribute to the purchase of music and

attendant royalties, travel expenses, and mobile sound equipment.” Diversity: Voices of Sarasota, was formed in 2008 when The Gulf Coast Men’s Chorus and Harmony: The Women’s Voices of Sarasota joined A member of Diversity: forces. Since The Voices of Sarasota, its inception, performs in “Broadway the group has Our Way II.” performed throughout the state and North America, including an appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2010 as part of the “Sing for the Cure” concert. 2010 Census shows marked increase in Florida same-sex households staff report Florida saw a jump in reported samesex households from some 40,000 in 2000 to nearly 65,000 in 2010, an increase of more than 50 percent, according to census data released Aug. 18. While that jump is significant, experts suggested that exact numbers may be inaccurate because not all same-sex couples may have reported honestly on census forms. In fact, annual Census Bureau estimates already suggest the greatest increases in reported same-sex couples in the state were in areas of largely conservative Northern Florida where social stigma previously kept many gays in the closet. The same-sex household numbers have been among the most eagerly awaited of the 2010 Census, in part because, for the first time, they reflect how many gay couples are raising children. Later this year, the Census Bureau will report another first—how many same-sex couples report being married. This is the third Census in which the bureau has enumerated same-sex couples, but the first since a few states— which do not include Florida—began allowing same-sex couples to get married.

Early indicators show a large number of same-sex couples in Florida got married in other states since marriage became legal in that handful of states, beginning with Massachusetts in 2004. Reports show that a majority of the Sunshine State’s same-sex couples live in South Florida, with slightly more than 9,000 in Broward County and nearly 7,400 in Miami-Dade. Orange County has the third-highest number of gay couples in the state with 4,751. Pinellas and Hillsborough counties has the fifth- and sixth-highest numbers of same-sex couples in the state, respectively, with Hillsborough showing 4,376 same-sex couples residing in the county and Pinellas showing slightly more with 4,438. That’s a jump of nearly 2,000 couples per county in Tampa Bay. In Sarasota County, same-sex households jumped by about 600, with a reported 1,507 households identifying as same-sex. Pasco County reported similar numbers, with 1,447 same-sex households in 2010. Male couples outnumber female couples. Additionally, about a fifth of the state’s same-sex couples are raising children. | l |

briefs Teacher fired over gay porn past A Miami Dade substitute teacher has lost his job after his former career as a gay porn star was revealed. In addition to teaching, Sean Loftis gained notoriety as a CNN iReporter, doing citizen’s reporting for the news giant’s website. The Miami New Times reports that he worked in porn from 2005–2010 under the name “Collin O’Neal.” The ACLU turned down Loftis’ request that they take up his case.

Wilton Manors 2nd gayest place New census numbers show Wilton Manors, a neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale, is the U.S. jurisdiction with the second-most same-sex couples per 1,000 households. Analysis by the Williams Institute shows Wilton Manors has 140 same-sex couples per 1,000 households. Provincetown, Massachusetts came in first, with a reported 163 same-sex couples per 1,000 households.

Judge considers whether to make Prop. 8 trial videos public wire report San Francisco, Calif. | Opponents and supporters of Proposition 8, California’s ban on gay marriage, presented arguments Aug. 29 to the U.S. District Court on whether to publicly release footage of the trial on the law’s constitutionality. Conservatives are currently appealing a ruling in a separate case striking down the ban. “We have a strong tradition of openness in this country and the First Amendment and common law make judicial records and proceedings presumptively open to the public,” Ted Boutrous, lawyer for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, told the court. “The proponents have been utterly unable to explain why the public should be barred from seeing and hearing for themselves what happened in a public trial,” he added. “The real reason that the proponents are fighting public release is that do not want the world to see the powerful evidence we submitted showing that Proposition 8 flatly violates the

Constitution.” U.S. District Judge James Ware allowed that he was generally in favor of allowing cameras in the courtroom, but also said he was concerned about the precedent of having one judge break the agreement made by another judge. The U.S. Supreme Court banned cameras from covering the high-profile case after attorneys for Proposition 8 argued that the public exposure could intimidate witnesses. The presiding judge, the now-retired Vaughn Walker, had his staff record the trial for what he said was his personal use in deciding the case. After Walker struck down Proposition 8 in August 2010, supporters of gay marriage argued that the videotapes should be unsealed in order to allow Americans to see the proceedings of the landmark trial. Protect Marriage, the conservative group defending the ban, believes releasing the footage would leave its two witnesses vulnerable to attacks and harassment. Ware said he would not delay and would issue a ruling soon. | l |

Ill. judge rules against Catholics on LGBT foster care

wire report Springfield, Ill. | An Illinois judge ruled Aug. 18 that the state can stop working with Catholic Charities on adoptions and foster care placements—something the state decided to do in July after the not-for-profit agency refused to recognize Illinois’ new civil unions law. In his ruling, Sangamon County Circuit Judge John Schmidt said that no one, including Catholic Charities, has a legal right to a contract with the state government. The state Department of Children and Family Services ended $30 million in

contracts with Catholic Charities in four church dioceses in July, but Schmidt had temporarily reinstated them while he considered the case. Illinois authorities had said they were canceling the contracts because Catholic Charities’ practice of referring unmarried couples to other agencies was discriminatory, a violation of the state’s civil union law. Catholic Charities argued it was exempt under civil unions and another state law that protect religious practices. A spokesman for Catholic Charities said the organization’s lawyers were reviewing the ruling “and considering next actions.’’ | l |

Perry signs pledge on antigay marriage amendment GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry has signed a National Organization for Marriage pledge to back a federal constitutional amendment against gay marriage—a reversal from a month ago when Perry said he so supported individual states’ rights that he was fine with New York’s approval of same-sex marriage. The pledge states that, if elected, Perry will pursue a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and appoint U.S. Supreme Court and federal judges who will “reject the idea our Founding Fathers inserted a right to

gay marriage into our Constitution.’’ Michelle Bachmann, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum have also signed the pledge.

Puerto Rico senator resigns in photo controversy Puerto Rico Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz announced Aug. 28 that Republican Sen. Roberto Arango presented a letter of resignation following reports that explicit photos of him surfaced on a mobile network application for gays and bisexuals. Arango represents San Juan, the U.S. territory’s capital. Arango has neither confirmed nor denied the photos are of him.

When Longstreth asks Rodriguez to sign a few copies of the script, the player agrees. “That was way too easy,” he jokes, after signing and heading over to another cameraman awaiting an interview. Klein is happy with the first player’s participation. “He was incredibly nice,” Klein comments. “Let’s hope the rest of the day goes that smoothly.” Not 15 minutes after Rodriguez completes his segment, Rays manager Joe Madden comes out from behind the dugout, ready to record his contribution. The gruff Tampa Bay icon makes sure to pump the hand of every member of the crew before settling into position in the dugout, looking out onto the field. Within minutes, the manager reads his lines—which are suspiciously similar to the ones the crew heard Rodriguez read before. Klein later explains that every player in the film will read the same cue cards, and in the finished product they’ll be edited together based on who read what line the best. After his take, Madden is thanked and asked to sign a few items. He agrees and comments about the It Gets Better campaign: “This is an important thing. I’m happy to be a part of it.” While Madden signs his name to a few items, left-fielder Sam Fuld arrives in the dugout, ready for his segment. After a quick

The young player settles in and soon reads the familiar lines. After a few takes Klein is happy with what he’s captured and Fuld moves on. Soon, it’s quiet in the Trop as we await

Eventually, music starts playing through the speakers and overhead lights brighten the once dim domed stadium. Eventually, the handsome outfielder Damon steps out of the dugout, ready to record. After doing so with very little trouble, Klein asks the slugger if he would mind sharing a personal story for the campaign against bullying. Damon easily agrees. “When I was younger, I stuttered,” Damon explains to the lens. He shares that he was teased for his speech issues but that through practice and determination, he overcame the challenge. His words are encouraging and appear to be just what Klein was looking for from the popular player. With the Rays’ segments finally caught on film, the crew heads to right field, where we await the arrival of fans to participate in a large crowd shot to close the video.

Yes. Anti-gay opinions outside of the class have an effect on LGBT students, whether or not they are expressed in the classroom. Maybe, if the teacher has otherwise demonstrated bigoted attitudes publicly.

On Mary Meeks’ column honoring LGBT activists:

Should teachers face discipline for statements made on social networking sites? A new poll will be posted to the homepage this week. Be sure to visit WatermarkOnline.com and let us know what YOU think!

“Thanks also for identifying some of the brave and selfless people that stood with me in those early days. Your column is a real tribute to them and those of you that are currently on the battleground. You are now the role model for others contemplating dipping their toe into the battle for our equality. Having you at the forefront forging ahead in our quest for civil rights, gives me so much hope and assurance that we will continue to succeed.”

Perfect, ironic timing

It makes me angry and breaks my heart. I’m afraid that if she or others like her are elected, the hope of so many of us will diminish and we’ll go backward instead of moving forward. Bachmann is not killing people with guns, but she believes in fear. And isn’t inducing fear a part of terrorism? There are a lot of LGBT people hoping for true equality, but with this woman and others like her, fear is a very real thing. I hope we can come together and overcome.

Both of those issues are vitally important, but in the meantime, millions upon millions can be saved because of the untapped resources in the LGBT community. I will never accept this sin...” The school district requires educators to value the “worth and dignity of every student.” Some agree with Buell’s former student, 26-year-old Tyler Morris, that the Facebook post violates that directive. “It really is scary,” Morris told the Orlando Sentinel. “He has repeatedly made students uncomfortable and fearful, and it should not be tolerated.” But some liberal commentators—and many of my gay friends—lined up behind Buell, who Facebook after reinstatement said, “I was thrown in the and Freedom blender for exercising my First Amendment rights.” of Speech Discussion of the case reminds me of law school, where professors delight in tweaking facts to test the reasoning power of students. What if the posting was by a third party, and exposed a past in gay porn? Using the pseudonym Collin O’Neal, Shawn Loftis had a substantial career directing and starring in hard-core films like Mo’ Bubble Butt and Humping Iron. But in 2010 he gave it up to become a substitute math teacher at all grade levels in the Miami-Dade school system. When web sites displaying his prurient past were exposed by a fellow teacher, the school system suspended Loftis for violating a rule demanding that faculty “conduct themselves, both in their employment and in the ast week, a Lake County social studies community, in a manner that will reflect credit teacher became the subject of national upon themselves and the school system.” The debate when he was suspended for a Florida Department of Education then revoked Facebook post decrying same-sex marriage. his teaching certification. I ran into him at a late-night screening of A Separate Peace, one of the few movies back then with a homoerotic subtext. Instead of idealism, I saw fear in Mr. Baker’s eyes. He ducked his head, walked quickly around me and took pains to avoid me after the movie. This was a man I admired and with whom I identified, teaching me an unintended but vivid lesson: to be afraid. The freedom to live your life, and to express your beliefs, is fundamental to dignified human existence. He appears to be a dedicated and passionate teacher; high school kids can learn a lot from teachers with whom they disagree. But I would have suspended him to demonstrate the seriousness of his transgression and required that he undertake sensitivity training, including attendance at local PFLAG meetings. If further investigation reveals a pattern of homophobia or religious activism in the classroom, or if he makes additional pronouncements that would make LGBT or non-Christian students uncomfortable, he should be removed. | l |

here! TV is, well, The LGBT premium subscription channel lands on Bright House networks sept. 7 steve blanchard

HeRe! O

n Sept. 7, LGBT television viewers in Tampa Bay and Orlando will have the opportunity to add a little more fabulousness into their lives. The premium subscription cable channel here! TV will be available on channel 398 on Bright House Networks. “Bright House has a key market that we’ve been interested in for some time,” says Eric Feldman, here! TV executive vice president and general manager. “We’re already on Verizon, but we’ve received great feedback from when our executives are in those markets—whether it’s at a film festival or whatnot.” The network went on the air in August, 2004, and has seen steady growth since then, despite some trying economic times. The expansion into Bright House’s mid- and west-

Florida locations has been something network executives have wanted for a long time, so they jumped at the chance to secure the spot. “When we started, the timing for the network was right, and then it was wrong— now it’s right again,” says Josh Rosenzweig, senior VP of original programming and development. “We made it through a difficult period—a difficult period for any premium service. We launched at the right time in 2004 to get our foot in the door and people knew we were there. That helped build a nice strong base of subscribers.” But when the economy took a down turn, subscribers started cutting the service to save money. But Rosenzweig believes we’re coming out of that trend. “In 12 months or so we’ll see a new day dawning and people will still need to see their

stories told,” Rosenzweig says. And there are plenty of stories available on here! TV for the entire alphabet that is our community. “We do have something for everyone and our programs run the gamut,” Feldman says. “Of course you’re never going to please everyone, but we certainly try and I think we’ve been very successful.” Both men are hopeful that Bright House subscribers will take the opportunity to view here! TV when it debuts on Sept. 7 in our market. For those unfamiliar with the network, Rosenzweig has a simple way of explaining it: “I like to use the analogy that here! TV is to LOGO as Showtime is to MTV,” he says. “What you can give on a basic cable channel like LOGO is much different than what we can Continued on page 34 | uu |

Fright Night (Starring Colin Farrell, Anton yelchin, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Toni Collette, David Tennant)

T

he original Fright Night was hip and humorous, but not necessarily scary. It was a model of that Gen X cheekiness that also shaped The Goonies, Heathers, Better Off Dead, and most similarly, The Lost Boys. This update is a little more milquetoast, but it boasts better acting, cooler effects and more action than the original. Charley (Yelchin) is a bit of a jerk this time. He’s abandoned his geek friend MintzPlasse (Superbad) for a hot girlfriend (Poots) and better acquaintances.Too bad, because

Mintz-Plasse needs help to stake out their new neighbor, sexy handyman Farrell. Farrell’s a bloodsucker out to feed on every single woman in town, including Yelchin’s mom, Collette. Some things are better done this time. Gone is Chris Sarandon’s pedophilic creepiness for Farrell’s sexy swagger; the Irishman almost steals the entire film. The setting, an isolated suburb outside of Las Vegas, is easier to destroy. David Tennant (one of TV’s Dr. Whos) is wonderful as fake vampire slayer Peter Vincent. Fight sequences include a chilling van ride and battle that tears apart a museumlike Vegas penthouse—one filled with various ways to slaughter the undead. The movie’s surprises are small, especially if you remember the original 1985 film. I’m not sure there was a really good reason for this remake, but at least it doesn’t totally suck.

Turning our schools into safe spaces for everyone When kids learn the value of inclusiveness at school, they carry it with them throughout life. That’s why Wells Fargo chose to be a premier sponsor of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) as they launched their Safe Space Campaign to combat bullying in our schools. This year, we’ve underwritten the development and distribution of 15,000 Safe Space Kits to schools across the country. And that’s just the beginning — by 2013, GLSEN will have reached more than 15 million students. To learn more about how you can support the campaign, visit safespacekit.com. Emma and Dexter change from year to year, but there’s still something about them that stays the same. What about you do you see changing most from year to year? And what is something that always stays the same? I’m happier. I get happier every year. I find that as I get older, I take in life more and I think that’s making me a better person. As I get older I, funny enough, become more trusting, but I trust fewer people. The people that I do trust, it’s gone much deeper. What stays the same? I’m a really curious person. I believe that imagination is not something you grow out of, and I find that stays the same.

Actress Anne Hathaway has been a darling for the LGBT community since her appearances in Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada and a video campaign for N.Y. marriage equality.

chris azzopardi

G

ays adore Anne Hathaway for more than her sweetheart sensibility and frumpy-to-fashionable underdog role in The Devil Wears Prada. She’s practically an honorary member of the community, contributing to the “It Gets Better” project, receiving an award from the Human Rights Campaign and quitting Catholicism for her gay brother. And then consider the super gay trajectory of her career: Brokeback Mountain and, as reported, an upcoming role as Judy Garland in the gay icon’s biopic, and a stint on Glee as Kurt’s lesbian aunt. Hathaway is cast as Emma Morley in her latest movie, the lovely screen adaptation of David Nicholls’ bestselling novel One Day, which chronicles her relationship with Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess of Across the Universe) on the same day every year for two decades. The day after the premiere in New York City, the actress cheerfully breezes into a suite at the Waldorf Astoria, appearing so tiny you could put her in your pocket. And lesbians everywhere just might want to after seeing her sexily vacuum-sealed in a vinyl cat suit for

The Dark Knight Rises, which she’s currently filming. When Hathaway sits down, she’s her usual bubbly self, discussing the most significant day in her life, her upcoming role as Catwoman (as much as she can, anyway) and the enduring power of love for all people. WATERMARK: Even though this is a story about a straight couple, how do you think it can resonate with a gay audience? ANNE hAThAWAY: Love is universal. Anybody who has a heart can relate to what it is to have it broken again and again and again, and like I said, that’s universal—gay, straight, questioning, whatever you are. Do you know a gay couple that has that type of enduring relationship like Emma and Dexter? Oh my god, yes—I went to Vassar! I have like a pod now, and we’ve all been in each other’s lives for 10 years—and they don’t admit it, but I have gay friends that I think are secretly in love with each other. And now, gay relationships are finally

recognized in New York. Yes, yes! Round of applause for New York! I was so happy. All the pictures of the couples who have been together for so many years— some people for over 60 years, like those two ladies that got married first—adorable! Long overdue but so welcome. Now the rest of America, get on it! Enough with your nonsense and foolishness. What can people take away from One Day? It’s up there with the classic love stories. It requires you to open your heart and feel, and a lot of movies don’t mind if you feel.

You really had to convince director Lone Scherfig to cast you in this film. What was the casting process like for The Dark Knight Rises, and how would you describe your interpretation of your character in it, Selina Kyle? I can’t talk about the interpretation, because that is just a hermetically sealed secret—I mean, if you want to take on (director) Chris Nolan, you’re more than welcome to, but I’m intimidated. But the process for getting Dark Knight Rises was: Chris met with a bunch of girls and then he called the list down to do screen tests, so everyone with an XX chromosome in Hollywood was just literally sitting on pins and needles for three-and-ahalf months, and then I understood he screen tested a few of us. I felt bad because we tested, I think, on Thursday and the Golden Globes was that Sunday—and I didn’t mean to, but wherever I went that whole weekend I just kept bumping into Chris and I’m like, “I swear I’m not stalking you! A few days later I was back in Brooklyn, and my manager called me and I answered the phone and she goes, “Meow.” And I was like, “Haha! Oh no, wait! Really?!” And she said, “Yes!” One of the best days in my life. And I really should know that date. January… something. (Laughs)

Emma’s arc follows her through many years, from college to potential motherhood. What about her did you cling to Do you have a date throughout all that’s as significant as “Long overdue but those years? the one in the book? so welcome. Now The book! I clung Aug. 3, 2001. Do you know who that is? Because she didn’t! Our friends Mark and Carrie of Ybor City— make that GaYbor—are always sharing stories about celebrities visiting the historic and very gay district of Tampa. But their news from the weekend of Aug. 27 really caught our attention. It seems while Daphne Ferraro was entertaining the crowds at Hamburger Mary’s during the 10:30 p.m. drag show, she pulled none other than Tampa Bay Buccaneer defensive lineman Chris Hovan, who was enjoying Ybor with his wife, Jaimi, onto the stage. The guys tell us that Ferraro harassed Hovan pretty bad and he was an incredible sport. The kicker? Ferraro didn’t know she had selected a local sports celebrity as her target until after the show! It’s great to hear a local NFL star is willing to hang with the LGBT community on a Saturday night.

Pride gives “Trevor” a hefty check On the day that the Tampa Bay Rays, along with members of the Tampa Bay LGBT community, joined together to film an “It Gets Better” video, St. Pete Pride forked over more than $1,000 to the Trevor

Project. The $1,042.72 was donated to the charity’s “$13,000 for Trevor’s 13th Birthday” fundraising campaign. “The two go hand in hand,” St. Pete Pride executive director Chris Rudisill said. “It is important to our organization that we reach out to not only assist organizations that help LGBT young people, but to also make a statement to them that life gets better” The money was raised at St. Pete Pride’s 2011 Tropical Wave Silent Auction, which was held on June 18, 2011 at Push Ultra Lounge in downtown St. Petersburg. The previous year, the event helped raise money for The Dali Museum’s building project. For more information, call St. Pete Pride at 727-279-LGBT (5428).

Bradenton welcomes the queens It appears as if Bradenton is finally coming out of the closet. The city, which doesn’t exactly have a strong history of LGBT acceptance, will play host to the Miss Florida Regional King and Queen Pageant on Sept. 9. The event, which benefits Prism Youth, will be at the very LGBT-friendly Manatee Players Theatre on Old Main Street. Contestant are still welcome to enter to compete for the crowns and sashes. Linda Stewart for…

Local watering hole Sip may be welcoming more than trivia and karaoke enthusiasts. According to bartender Jay Wood, the establishment is in the works to bring live music to the venue. They hope to enhance their Tuesday night Retro Happy Hour with acoustic talent, welcoming local artists. Details will no doubt be released soon…we hope.

Former Orange County Commissioner and flash reporter Linda Stewart is plotting a return to elected office. Fellow flasher Randy Ross sent out a Facebook event invitation recruiting “a variety of people that can assist in orchestrating and executing each and every part of her successful campaign.” There’s definitely excitement surrounding another Stewart campaign, but so far we’re not sure what office the former commissioner would be seeking. The invite didn’t specify that. It did say that Stewart is reaching higher than ever, saying “Linda Stewart is considering a bid for higher office.”

No Need to be Meek Orlando attorney and advocate Mary Meeks was featured in the Aug. 26 issue of the Orlando Business Journal. The top priority for Meeks’ renowned law firm is to help Central Floridians who have suffered discrimination in the workplace based on things such as race, sexual orientation, religion or gender. Meeks, who married her long time partner Vicki Nantz last year, has been a strong voice in the community for more than 23 years. “I want to use my time and talents to be an advocate in the community on LGBT and other civil rights,” she told the Orlando Business Journal. Besides working as an attorney and fighting for LGBT equality, Meeks is also a regular contributing columnist for Watermark.

Return of the Lickerpimples Just when you thought you had seen things go as White Trash as possible, the Lickerpimples return Sept. 25 with a wedding-themed bash. Watermark's own Rick Claggett is back organizing his White Trash party, and this year the trash is getting married! Attendees are invited to wear their most creative white-trash outfits and the best (or is it worst?) dressed partiers get prizes. This final-so they say-party is also a fundraiser for Come Out With Pride. For details, search for the party on Facebook.

Gay THeaTeR sURVIVes...

But are lGBt audiences getting what they want? joseph kissel

h

ow much is too much gay? That’s the question artistic directors at “alternative” theaters throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas counties seem to be grappling with as they negotiate the economic downturn—some with resounding success. Unsurprisingly, many out LGBT actors, directors, costume designers and others swell the ranks of the local professional theater biz. For instance, Eric Davis is Artistic Director of Freefall Theater, which like its productions, is enjoying an exhilarating ride due precisely to the slump. “Many things that are successful start in a downturn because the conditions for something new are favorable,” Davis says. Along with his partner Kevin Lane,

Davis has built a “daring theater with buzz,” which this season is presenting Grey Gardens, Comedy of Errors, A Christmas Carol and Cabaret, among many others. “We are not a gay theater company,” he said. Productions are chosen for their universal themes while maintaining an eclectic mix. Cabaret, coming in June of 2012, of course, features gay themes. In fact, “It was the first major musical to do so,” Davis says. Others have a similar message. “There isn’t any community theater that wants to be known as the ‘gay theater,’” says Cathy Hooten of M.A.D. Theater, which was founded originally to memorialize an actor who died of AIDS during the 1980s. “It’s limiting in terms of what you can do,” she said.

That said, M.A.D. produces some heavy gay content. Xana Don’t, for instance, featured an alternate universe where homosexuality is the norm and heterosexuality is the titillating, sometimes illegal and completely natural choice for others. But back in St. Pete, one theater company that did try to encompass all things gay in professional theater didn’t survive a series of unfortunate venue changes and the pressing weight of the downturn. After several years of rising success starting in 2005, Gypsy Productions found itself having to make its hiatus permanent after notable productions of Slap and Tickle, Corpus Christie, and Questa. “Right now I think it’s very Continued on page 64 | uu |

t may still feel like summer in Florida, but the arts don’t follow weather patterns— they follow the calendar. And since it’s September, that means area theater groups, music halls and arts organizations are serving up a new season of entertainment that’s sure to captivate members of the LGBT community and beyond. With so many incredible offerings on the table this season, it can be hard to pick and choose what to see. National acts as well as several very enthusiastic local productions that run the gamut from Broadway-style showcases and plays to music concerts and art exhibits are sure to bring in crowds. Do you want to enjoy some music? Check out kd lang in Sarasota and Clearwater. Are you up for some hilarious puppetry? Make sure you see Avenue Q at Theatre Downtown in Orlando. While lineups change each year, one thing remains constant—Florida continues to be a hub of activity for the arts community. As you browse the following pages, you’ll see that 2011 is no exception. We’ve done our best to dissect this massive list to make it as easy to follow and read as possible. Our special “Don’t Miss” offerings highlight some of the more well known acts coming our way this fall, and we’ve added a special purple icon and font near other listings to indicate items of specific LGBT interest or shows that caught our eye. We may wonder what happened to summer—it seemed to fly by. But with so many great plays, concerts and exhibits coming our way this fall, it’s hard not to look forward to the cooler months and the moment when the lights dim in the darkened theater.

the Boyz2Men group of the 1990s. According to Barker, the concert is a story in which the members of Una Voce portray men who were once part of the Vienna Boys Choir and have come back for a reunion. The first act of the concert is comedic, he says, with the men interacting as gay, straight, married and unmarried characters who find common ground in music. “When the curtain opens after intermission, it’s a concert within a Vienna Cathedral. We’ll have a beautiful gothic cathedral backdrop and the guys will be in tuxedos.” The accompaniment will be provided by a brass quintet and the music will be very sacred, traditional Christmas Music. The concert will be under the direction of artist director Dwight Thomas, who came on board January 2011. In all, Una Voce boasts more than 60 members—with a dozen or so of those members as support members, meaning they handle tickets, scheduling, etc. The

La Cage Aux Folles More than likely you’ve seen the filmed version of La Cage Aux Folles—and the 1990s remake, The Birdcage. But if you’ve never seen the musical comedy written by Harvey Fierstein on stage, now’s your chance. The touring version of the Broadway smash stars Christopher Seiben as Albin, a performer who goes by the name of Zaza, and George Hamilton as his husband, Albin. Politics and conservative values meet their match, and we’re certain the theater will be packed with LGBTs nightly. Feb. 21-26 | Straz Center for the Performing Arts

others are singing members who are onstage throughout the concert. “Most of our members come from some kind of singing background,” Barker says. “Our youngest member this season is 22; our oldest is 78.” In April, the men will perform an anniversary concert to celebrate a decade of choral music excellence. With the resurgence of choral music’s popularity, thanks to shows like Glee and The Sing Off, Barker is optimistic that Una Voce has a long life ahead of it. “Choral music is getting stronger,” Barker says. “People see it as a new art form and part of our success has been from the general public’s interest.” For more information on Una Voce: The Florida Men’s Chorale, and for concert dates and tickets, visit Una-Voce.org or call 855-Una-Voce. –Steve Blanchard

n the fall of 2002, D.J. Holt wanted to bring together a group of gay men who wanted to focus on choral music excellence. Now in preparation for its 10th season, Una-Voce: The Florida Men’s Chorale, has announced an ambitious holiday show this December and a large anniversary show in April. “There are a lot of places to sing,” says Una Voce Board President Tom Barker. “But our singers want a gay chorus and a semiprofessional organization wanting to improve the art of choral singing. That’s our mission.” Barker, who joined the men’s chorale in 2005 as a singing member, was elected president in 2007—a position he’s held since. One of the things he’s focused on is gaining recognition outside of the LGBT community. In hindsight, he’s done a remarkable job. “We’ve done benefit concerts for the Susan Kohman Foundation and the Suncoast Hospice and this year we’re doing a benefit concert for the Gulf Coast Senior Center Foundation,” he says. “Our focus has been to reach out and give back to the community as a whole.” Una Voce has also performed at Tropicana Field, where the men sang the national anthem before a Tampa Bay Rays game. This year’s holiday concert is titled “Vienna Boys…Two Men,” which is a take on

ince 2007, Tampa Bay—and now the country—has enjoyed the talented men of the St. Petersburg Twirling Project. With their trademark look—crisp white uniforms, colorful flowing flags and catchy choreography—it’s hard not to see the group of 16-20 men marching in a parade. “One of the things I like most about STP is the fraternal aspect of our group,” says Chuck Henson, one of the founders of the group. “We have become more than performance ensemble. We’re brothers.” STP’s first performance was the 2007 St. Petersburg Santa Parade—an event that nearly didn’t happen. When the Lions Club of St. Petersburg was going to cancel the annual holiday tradition due lack of funds, it was STP (then called Santa’s Twirlers) who reached out into the community to find the sponsorship necessary to host the parade. They have been a performance anchor of the event ever since. In 2011, the group expanded its reach and was invited to participate in

St. Petersburg twirling Project the Los Angeles Pride Parade in West Hollywood, Calif. The St. Petersburg Twirling Project (or STP) may be only a few years old, but the group‘s roots are firmly planted in 1992. That was the year President Bill Clinton signed “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” into law— which prohibited the military from discriminating against LGBT service members as long as they kept their sexuality secret. That same year, three friends in Chicago banded together with a dozen other men to form the Righteously Outrageous Twirling

Corps (ROTC)—an all-male, militarybased color guard group designed to enhance the Pride message of inclusiveness in the city’s Pride Parade. Similar groups quickly formed across the United states and Canada using the ROTC name or Flaggots. An strong ROTC contingent is based in St. Petersburg to this day. Since its incorporation, STP has been a focal point at the St. Pete Pride Promenade, Tampa’s Christmas parade in Ybor City, the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Sarasota Pride, and the St.

In July 2012, STP will cash in its invitation to participate in the Philadelphia Fourth of July Celebration and Parade. STP is a diverse group of men, ranging in age from 17 to 51. While the group is based on the tradition of marching band color guard, STP’s

choreography and choice of music is far from traditional. (2011’s song was Katy Perry’s “California Gurlz”— following Madonna’s “Holiday” and “It’s Rainin’ Men!) “STP is a precision-oriented performance ensemble,” said Henson. “But we have never forgotten why we perform—to make our audience smile.” For those interested in joining STP, visit their Facebook group or call José Perez at 727-865-7554 .—Steve Blanchard

Now, the Tampa-based performer is combining her love of the arts with her new job as a life coach with a series of workshops to help those on a path to selfdiscovery. “If you’re questioning where you stand in your life, searching for ways to be happier or wondering how you can have more peace, you’re a perfect fit for this experience,” says Backauskas. “You’ll discover the beliefs and perceptions that keep you from living the life you want and see your favorite characters from a fabulous new perspective.” The series, called “Whimsical Enlightenment: Workshops that Transform Entertainment into Spiritual Wisdom” begins in some familiar territory—the Land of Oz. After creating a series of paintings on vintage vinyl—aptly named “Tablespoons of Paint” because it took roughly one tablespoon of paint to create each one—she was urged by a friend to submit the idea to bar co-owner Brian Humphries for a larger scale version.Rose also creates what she calls “sculpturings.” She utilizes precious metals and found and burnable objects to create functional mobile sculpture, which are generally in the form of a wearable ring. “Sculpturings prompt discussion as the work moves with its owner, rather than art that waits for its audience,” says Rose. She explains that her inspirations come from every day thoughts or events, which she translates into a theme for each ring. “If I was friends with Webster I’d ask him to add this entry to [his dictionary]: Sculpturings: an artistic collection of small sculpture on a mobile scale for fingers, with

From that moment forward, I realized I saw things a bit different.” Rose accredits her aesthetic to Andy Warhol and Sam Wagstaff, who is most known for his influence in the 1980s photography art scene. “Just like the advances he made bringing photography into the limelight, he was planning to do the same with silver sculpture but died of AIDS before given the chance to see it manifest,” says Rose. Productions of Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Giselle are still on the tap because, honestly, he admits, he realizes how good they are. Those programs are also very satisfying for the dancers as well as the audience members who desire a more diverse repertoire. “It’s the physicality of the dance that tells these stories,” Hill says. “There’s a lot of high-energy dancing and the subject can be looked at from many different angles.” Hill admits that there is not currently a large LGBT contingent in his audiences, but he expects that to change in the coming season and in the coming years. He adds that the success of the blockbuster film

But with optimism and creativity, Hill is certain the arts— and the Orlando Ballet—will continue to survive. “The arts scene in Orlando remains very diverse and I think there’s a lot of energy in this community,” says the former principal dancer with The Royal Ballet and the New York City Ballet. Too many people, Hill says, have a pre-conceived idea that ballet is an old-fashioned take on a music box ballerina. But that’s not the case, especially with the Orlando Ballet, and Hill wants to issue a challenge to skeptics. “I say see our Battle of the Sexes or our Vampire’s Ball program,” he says. “Ballet is sexy, athletic, exciting and youthful with beautiful bodies on

It has certainly put the ballet world up there.” While Hill enjoyed many years as a performer on the stage—he retired from that role at the age of 42—he says he is perfectly happy to remain as a director rather than a performer. His favorite part of his job is working with young talent and helping them find their abilities. “I had a great career on stage and I’m very fortunate for that,” Hill says. “But one of the things I learned when I began to teach and coach is that I get a great deal of pleasure helping young talent find their potential. While most non-profit theaters have had to close their doors recently, Winter Park Playhouse remains one of the five withstanding in Florida. According to Long, it hasn’t been easy but it is thanks largely in part to donations from the community. “One of the misconceptions is that just buying a ticket is donating,” Long explains. “However, ticket sales only cover 45% of the operating costs.” As a part of the community, the Playhouse does enjoy giving back as well. Thanks in part to grants, it established the outreach program R.E.A.C.H.(Relevant Educational Arts for Children), which offers Title I and other under-served elementary schools in the Central Florida community the opportunity to experience live musical theatre and hopefully

inter Park | Now in its ninth season, the Winter Park Playhouse—tucked away on north Orange Avenue—has played host to many local seasoned thespians including Kevin Kelly, Tim Evanicki, who wrote and performed in their production of Bathhouse: The Musical, and Todd Allen Long. Long, pictured in the cowboy hat, is also the theatre’s box office manager, facilities manager and volunteer coordinator. He has been with the company since 2004. A Musical Education major, his background includes stints at Mad Cow Theatre, Orlando Opera, the Jester Theater Company and the Orlando Fringe Festival. The Playhouse offers a variety of theatrics, including reviews, musicals and “book shows.” Currently on display: the spoof Musical of Musicals: The Musical, which takes audiences on a journey through famous Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Kander & Ebb productions, pointing out the foibles and shortcomings of musicals, all the while embracing and celebrating the art form. Another unique entertainment option is their cabaret series, which features a variety of singers and pianists. Guests can experience true “New York style” cabaret in

I saw this as an opportunity to produce opera the way I thought it should be produced.” Under Maestro DeRenzi’s leadership, the opera has seen award-winning performances and created important educational and outreach activities. The year-round activities of the Sarasota Youth Opera Program introduce young people, ages 8 to 18, to all aspects of opera. The program, which was started soon after DeRenzi came onboard, constitutes a remarkable learning and performing opportunity with three Youth Opera Choruses and a tri-annual production of a commissioned and professionally staged opera. DeRenzi says there about 60-70 youth currently in the program, including LGBT youth. “My first experience with gay people was at the opera when I was growing up in Manhattan and it was very positive at a time in the 1960s when gay people were just starting to come into their own,” he says.

limited in terms of what’s available for gay audiences,” says Gypsy Artistic Director Trevor Keller, whose back story is enough for his own production. The former drag performer, bodybuilder and 35-year theater professional hopes Gypsy will re-emerge at a permanent location to give gay audiences more choices. “Fundamentally, people want to go to the theater to see some version of themselves,” says Karla Hartley, who’s a director and lighting designer at Stageworks Theater. Despite the “difficult at best” summation of the fundraising climate by Artistic Director Anna Brennan, Stageworks recently opened

“Fundamentally, people want to go to the theater to see some version of themselves.” —Karla Hartley of Stageworks Theater a $1.2 million theater following a 10-year fundraising effort. Mirroring a general funding conundrum across the country and at public schools, where arts get axed first, Brennan says, “The grants are gone but our fundraising efforts have been nothing short of fantastic.” At the heart of it all is Andrea Graham.

“In the worst recession since The Great Depression, she raised a million dollars,” Brennan says. “And for that she’s the goddess of theater in Hillsborough. Nothing short of miraculous.” The thread of gay life is woven into the arts, and the inevitable fraying underway in this economic downturn is paring the ranks of

arts organizations and forcing artists out of the field—at least temporarily. “People always have a reason to drink,” said Daniel Harris, who’s a bartender at the Lucky Star lounge in St. Pete as well as a popular local actor, costume designer and director for Gypsy. The company was known for its groundbreaking, edgy fare like Bent, which originally starred Ian McKellen in the West End production and Richard Gere in its 1980 Broadway production. For Gypsy’s production at the Suncoast Resort, Keller brought in Holocaust survivors to see the play. Before Bent, research on homosexual victims of the Holocaust was virtually nil—and it proved to be the company’s most successful production. But how serious can you get before you start to bore the queens? M.A.D. Productions recently did a run of the very somber Quilt, and it was poorly attended, Hooten said. However, the recently wrapped, Glee-friendly, John Waters-inspired Hairspray did much better for the company. So are we to beware a future where theater productions encompass only projects like Sordid Lives or even The Matthew Shepherd Story? Or should we be grateful we’re getting that at all? With the disposable income of audiences dwindling, even amongst valued queer arts patronage, theater companies are going to have to bet on hits or board of director patience for sparsely attended shows, And as usual, they must always stretch dollars to the max. “It’s good to be frugal and to have that as part of your institutional culture,” says Harley. In addition, part of Freefall’s success has been its ability to lure patrons off the traditional donor radar screen, Davis adds. And while Brennan at Stageworks said the biggest venues like the Straz Center in Tampa and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater were feeling the least pain, Davis said they are the ones at-risk because of their expensive, bloated nature. “New organizations run very lean,” Davis says. “You make do with what you have, and that’s the story at Freefall.” And what if there’s a double dip recession? “That’s a political tool, a scare tactic by politicians looking to seek office,’’ Keller says. And it certainly wouldn’t be doing the alternative theater scene any favors. But another area success story partially credits its strong attendance with one of the most important factors in art: location. More specifically, downtown St. Petersburg, which is also the home of Freefall. “I am here on the streets everyday and I see the people and the activity,” says Bob Devin Jones, Artistic Director of Studio@620, which showcases a wide variety of musical, dramatic and dance events along with gallery showings. “The creative community in St. Pete is doing really well.” | l |

uFC champion says he won’t grapple with gay fighters wire report Two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira says he won’t grapple with gay students. Nogueira has qualms about training with homosexuals, judging by quotes published recently by UOL Esporte and reported in USA Today. The winner of heavyweight titles in Pride Fighting Championships and the Ultimate Fighting Championship expressed concerns about the physical contact. In a translation from the Portuguese article, Nogueira says he isn’t prejudiced but is concerned about a gay student’s intent when it comes to physical contact. “I wouldn’t train with someone who’s gay,” he said. “I have no malice, I don’t take our physical contact as (something) sexual. But what if the gay person has that malice of having physical contact with me, of staying there grappling? I would have no problems having a gay student in my

Tim Hardaway offers support to LGBTs wire report El Paso, Tex. | The group opposing a recall of El Paso Mayor John Cook and two city representatives for their support of partner benefits for city employees got an endorsement in August from an unlikely source: former University of Texas at El Paso superstar and NBA All-Star Tim Hardaway, who once made headlines for saying he “hated gay people.” The message of a recent news conference, held by El Paso’s “No Recall Group,” was to try to provoke a change of heart for those who oppose health benefits for gay and unmarried partners of city employees. It was clear that Hardaway has had a “change of heart” of his own. When asked on a Miami radio show in 2007 what he thought of having a gay teammate, Hardaway replied: “Whoa, first of all, I wouldn’t want him on my team.” After it was pointed out by the host of the show that his comments were “homophobic” and “bigotry,” Hardaway replied, “You know, I hate gay people. I let it be known.” Hardaway’s anti-gay rant drew criticism across the country, including on late-night talk shows. However, that was four years ago. This is what Tim Hardaway was saying last month: “It’s not right not to let the gays and lesbians have equal rights here,” said the 44-year-old, who has been working with

gay rights groups in Miami and is now lending an assist to El Paso’s “No Recall Group,” opposing the recall of Cook and City Reps. Susie Byrd and Steve Ortega, who voted to re-establish domestic partner benefits for gay and unmarried partners of city

employees. “If I know El Paso, like they came together when the 1966 team won a championship and Don Haskins started those five guys,” Hardaway said, “I know the city will grow and understand that gays and lesbians need equal rights.” Hardaway told ABC-7 his “change of heart” came from those closest to him. “My family and friends came to me and were like, ‘What are you doing?’” Hardaway said. “I talked to them and they made me understand that wasn’t right.” Hardaway, whose jersey was retired last year by the Miami Heat, has only recently begun to gain acceptance back in NBA circles. He is currently the vice president of community relations for the Heat. City Representative Byrd said if Hardaway can have a “change of heart, anybody can.” | l |

“Good things don’t end unless they end badly.” —Ben from The Bachelorette tells Ashley his feelings after being dumped during the season finale. He should be relieved he doesn’t have to stand there and watch her endlessly twirl those rosebuds betwixt her fingers.

I P-Town extravaganza Billy Masters Billy@BillyMasters.com

’ve made it home from Europe...barely. My luggage, on the other hand, spent an extra few days in Berlin because the Germans are so hospitable. I would think it’s for the best that I ditched my original plans to extend my trip to spend time with family in Albania, but I may have been wrong. Eliza Dushku was just there and the government was so excited, they made her a citizen...and she’s only half Albanian! I could have been crowned king! Luggage or no luggage, I was not missing my annual week in Provincetown with a number of dear friends, including Bob Mackie, Nancy Dussault, Robbie Benson, Peter Marc Jacobson, Mark Sendroff and Marilyn Maye. In addition to eating our way across Cape Cod, our motley crew went to see quite a few performers who you should check out. Varla Jean Merman never ceases to amaze me. The high level of her writing ability is almost matched by her priceless delivery. All that plus she sings and looks great...and at one point, she’s on a swing! As with last year, Varla’s pianist is Tom Judson (aka porn superstar Gus Mattox)—and he’s a great foil for Merman, in addition to looking quite fetching tickling the ivories. He’s also doing his own show, which focuses more on his considerable singing and vocal abilities. That

said, there were some who may have been dismayed that they didn’t get to see an inch of flesh for at least a half hour. Eventually Judson re-appeared in undies—a look that was short-lived, but which he nonetheless pulls off quite well. I think the audience left satisfied, and perhaps knowing a bit more about this extraordinarily talented man. Someone who would fit in nicely with the P-town social scene is Jeremy Jackson. But I was kind of surprised when I read this next story. When he was filming Celebrity Rehab, he brought a large water filter with him. Why? Because he believes bottled water causes bisexuality! “The plastic leeches and causes cancer and bisexuality. It’s been linked directly.” Really? Directly where? I’m not sure drinking bottled water will cause him to crave sex with men, but it very well may cause him to fantasize about the bottle! You may recall I bemoaned the premature shuttering of the revival of La Cage aux Folles—particularly given the exquisite performance of Christopher Sieber. Well, you’re in luck—he’s just been added to the cast of the upcoming national tour. But he won’t be playing Georges (which was his role on Broadway). This time around, Chris will play Albin and Georges will be the dashing George Hamilton (who just underwent treatment for skin cancer—quelle surprise). At some point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sieber were playing both parts! This week’s “Ask Billy” question comes from Joseph in Las Vegas: “Have you seen recent pictures of Gerard Butler?? He’s usually hot and beefy, but right now he looks pretty lean and ripped. Is he doing it for a role or just changing his look?” Gerard Butler is certainly a ruggedly handsome man who usually looks very hunky (and, occasionally, chunky). So I was quite surprised when researching this question to find photos of him looking very lean, very ripped, and very buff. Oh, and very blond! As it happens, he’s transformed his body for a role in Mavericks where he will be playing a professional surfer (which explains the hair). I haven’t mentioned my buddy Scott Herman in a while. You remember Scott—that insanely

gorgeous fitness model from The Real World, Brooklyn who can be found giving workout tips on ScottHermanFitness.com. Anyhoo, he’s been the victim of a gay hate crime—which rarely happens to heterosexual men. But when you look like Scott, most people make the assumption that he plays for our team (isn’t it funny how that’s the image of gay men now?). He was in his native New Hampshire driving around in his Toyota Scion, which has his image and logo wrapped around it, when three guys in a pick-up truck started taunting him at a red light, entered his car, and began a verbal and physical attack. He got away from the guys, but not before taking down their license number. After reporting the attack, he said, “I take my involvement with the LGBT community on anti-bullying very serious, which is why I spoke out.”. When people hate Scott just because he’s beautiful, it’s definitely time to end yet another column. I’m gonna lay low in Boston for a week prior to reuniting with my paramour in Fort Lauderdale. So send your questions or a note to Billy@ BillyMasters. com and I promise to get back to you before Christopher Sieber gets cast in a production of Victor/Victoria! Until Victor/Victoria next time, remember, one man’s filth is another man’s bible. | l |
