I enjoyed reading Steve Blanchard’s Editor’s Desk on the negative effect of the religious right on his spirituality [Issue 19.05]. Unfortunately, most people—on the right as well as the left of the religious spectrum—equate faith as something that you can simply will into existence. It’s the Tinker Bell theory of faith development: If you just say, “I believe, I believe, I believe... in fairies,” it will become true. But beliefs—and faith—are not voluntary. You can’t will a belief into existence. Beliefs are involuntary. Simply saying or thinking you believe in something doesn’t make it so. You believe something because your life experiences and the observations you have made make it true for you. This is what the religious right—and mostly everyone else—doesn’t get. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth thinking about what you believe. But thinking of your faith as absolute truth is selfdefeating, because absolute truth doesn’t exist. Your personal truth—and your faith—is never constant, and it should never be thought of as such. Because once you claim you believe in something—to the exclusion of everything else—you shut your mind down to

Thank you, Mayor Buckhorn It’s so nice to read about the pro-LGBT positions of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn in Watermark [Issue 19.06]. While I don’t always agree with the mayor on all of his positions, especially inancially—I supported Rose Ferlita in the 2011 election—I am thrilled that this mayor embraces diversity and sees it as a strength rather than a weakness for the city. Other mayors throughout Florida should take notes. It’s 2012, and LGBT people are a key component to the success of cities as we emerge from a bad economy. CHASE DALTON TAMPA

2012: The year of samesex marriage? This year is shaping up to be another big, big year for marriage, and the clock is ticking. Our freedom to marry is on the ballot in key states in November and major freedom to marry cases are making their way toward the U.S. Supreme Court. By pulling together this year, we can win more states and create the climate that empowers courts to rule in favor of the freedom to marry. No matter where you live, we all have a stake in winning these battles to set the stage for ending marriage discrimination. That’s why today Freedom to Marry is launching the Win More States Fund with the goal to raise and spend at least $3 million in the battleground states of Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Washington. RAYVON MARTIN WASN’T GAY. BUT IF you don’t think his death in a February shooting directly affects you, you’re wrong.

The shooting death of Trayvon isn’t just a racial issue. It’s an American issue and his death and the circumstances surrounding it hit closer to the LGBT community than many may think. The 17-year-old who was approached and killed by a neighborhood watch captain in Sanford has captivated the nation’s attention and placed a brand new, bloody spotlight on racial tensions and unsubstantiated misperceptions in Florida and around the country. While new allegations surface that Martin supposedly fought admitted killer George Zimmerman, the fact remains that if the neighborhood watch captain had not racially proiled the young man,

followed him and then approached him, Martin would still be alive. Trayvon was shot and killed while walking from a store where he had just purchased a bag of Skittles and an iced tea for his younger brother. According to reports, Zimmerman called police to report a suspicious person after he saw Martin walking back from the store. Despite police instructing him not to confront Martin, Zimmerman approached the teenager. Witnesses say a scufle ensued before Zimmerman shot the unarmed teen in the chest with a semi-automatic pistol. Zimmerman confessed to the shooting, claiming self defense. Lawyers are citing the state’s “stand your ground” law, which lets

Floridians use deadly force when they feel their life is threatened. On March 26, Zimmerman’s lawyer released a statement saying that his client was attacked by the 17-year-old and therefore, the shooting was justiied. How can that be? It was Zimmerman who initially approached Martin, not the other way around. He even says so on a recorded 911 call. Martin had a drink and a bag of candy in his arsenal. Zimmerman had a gun. It’s frustrating when you consider how simply the deadly altercation could have been avoided. Zimmerman targeted the black teen because of the color of his skin and because he was a stranger in the neighborhood. It’s no different than when a member of the LGBT community walks into a straight bar, a new business or a conservative church. We are expected to be or behave a speciic way based on the stereotypes engrained in the heads of those different than us. We are treated differently just because of who we are—just like Trayvon. Unfortunately, the bias doesn’t stop at the borders of our community. The people who are the “LGBT” that deines us have so much self-inlicted stereotyping that I’m often amazed we’ve made as much progress as we have. Too many gay men feel superior to lesbians;

too many lesbians feel like all men should keep their distance; too often gay men and lesbians see their transgender brothers and sisters as just too different to care about; too many transgender individuals are so worried about being grouped in with gays, that it turns supporters against them; and bisexuals are often marginalized and labeled as “undecided” by gays and lesbians. It has to stop. The more we make of our differences, the more armor those who oppose us have to support their discriminatory behavior. If we ever want to fully surpass the equality hurdle in our country regarding LGBT rights, then we have to practice what we preach by supporting the rights of others and ighting discrimination in all of its forms—and speaking out for Trayvon is the most timely and effective way to do that. While supporters of Zimmerman are clamoring to clear the name of their friend by detailing his good deeds, it remains that an innocent kid is dead because he was perceived as a threat based on a stereotype that is antiquated and irrelevant. As the media wrestles with the particulars about what photos are used to represent each man, the validity of a “stand your ground” law and the details surrounding gun ownership, it’s important to not lose sight of the main issue. Stereotyping. We’ve all been subjected to it and we’ve all done it. The only way to stop it is with our own actions. And Trayvon’s murder is the latest example of why it has to end now. |  |

We have to practice what we preach by fighting discrimination in all of its forms—and speaking out for Trayvon is the most timely and effective way to do that.

RLANDO | For the irst time in two decades, the District 1 Orlando City Council race does not have an incumbent seeking re-election—but that’s not the only historic note of interest in the race. Two openly gay candidates are among the four seeking to ill the vacancy left by Phil Diamond, who has resigned his position to run for Orlando Mayor. Randy Ross and Chase Smith both threw their hats into the ring over the winter, and both have actively campaigned within the district that encompasses Medical City in Lake Nona, a facility many see as a jobs engine that is just revving up. While both out candidates note their sexuality frankly, neither is focused on that aspect of who they are. “I don’t believe sexuality is an issue in this or any other race,” said Ross, 46. “We are faced with unique challenges in Orlando from high unemployment to an inadequate

transit system. I am proud of being a gay man and proud that my campaign manager is a proud gay man. But I am solely focused on plans and issues that affect all residents of District 1, not just the LGBT community.” Smith has a similar point of view when it comes to his campaign. “I’m proud of who I am,” said Smith, 39, “but I see my candidacy in terms of being the only candidate in the race with the experience and best ideas necessary to see District 1 succeed and being the best equipped to serve the citizens.” Also seeking the District 1 seat are Jim Gray and Steve Rayle. From a fundraising standpoint, Gray seems ahead of the pack, having raised nearly $65,000, according to the Orlando City Clerk’s ofice. By comparison, Ross has raised just under $13,000 and Smith garnered just over $9,000. Rayle logged approximately $8,000, according to records dated March 9. But despite the inancial disparity, Ross and Chase both feel like their chances of landing the seat are strong. Smith, who grew up in Wauchula,

said his qualiications for the job include 20 years of experience in local government as well as his existing relationships with both the City of Orlando and Orange County. “I’m very conident,” Smith said. “It is my hope that the voters of District 1 will acknowledge my years of experience, the relationships I have with city and county elected oficials and staff and the fact that I have speciic plans on how to address the issues and concerns of residents and the district without having to go through a huge learning curve to learn and understand the city.” Ross also hopes that his understanding of the city will be taken into account by voters. He said his run was motivated by his feeling his voice was not being heard and has touted his “50 x 3” Orlando Job Fair Plan, which would require the city to sponsor a job fair every 90 days for the next two years. “I’m conident that I have run a campaign focused on issues that matter to Orlando, my district and that I’ve worked to include the voices of labor unions, community groups and business owners into my plans.” The two men have had limited interaction—mostly at forums Continued on page 14 |  |

MAYORAL RUN: Michael Cantone hopes to unseat Buddy Dyer

For a full rundown of Mayoral candidates, see Page 14.

RLANDO | With the election only days away, the race for Orlando mayor is pitting what many in the community consider to be an LGBTafirming incumbent mayor against an openly LGBT candidate. Michael Cantone, who identiies as bisexual, has made waves recently with sharp criticism of Mayor Buddy Dyer, and a clash with openly gay Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan. In a letter to Watermark, Sheehan criticized Cantone for his advocacy at Come Out With Pride in November. “Mr. Cantone seems more interested in getting attention for his campaign than actually helping the gay community,” Sheehan wrote. “That is his prerogative. But it is mine to defend our allies and those in the GLBTQ and friendly community who have been working collectively and cooperatively to further the cause of equality.” During Mayor Buddy Dyer’s nine year tenure, Orlando implemented domestic partner beneits for city employees and created a domestic partner registry. Dyer was also the irst sitting mayor to participate in Come Out with Pride. Cantone, however, considers Dyer’s support of the Orlando LGBT community a “fallacy.” “Every four years Buddy Dyer becomes a friend to the gay community,” said Cantone. “He deinitely times it right to deliver a campaign promise. The Domestic Partnership Registry would have been landmark ive years ago. That would have been a time to ight for the LGBT community… when there was no voice.” Cantone describes himself as a “progressive stance with pragmatic solutions,” who hopes to challenge what he calls “old school” politics in Orlando. Just 28, he would

Candidates for Orlando Mayor MICHAEL CANTONE Prone to hyperbole (“I’ll begin on day one to dismantle City Hall.”), this 28-yearold rabble rouser is a true progressive (see profile) who thinks the city hasn’t done enough for the LGBT community. Orlando Sentinel political columnist Scott Maxwell believes Cantone’s appeal is narrow because incumbent Mayor Buddy Dyer is a tested Democrat. Cantone believes he has a better pulse on the city. He hopes to prove Maxwell wrong on Election Day.

PHIL DIAMOND This soft-spoken sitting commissioner has represented District One for the past 10 years. An accountant and tax attorney, he has established a reputation as a fiscally conservative balance sheet guy. Diamond has repeatedly criticized Mayor Dyer for tone deaf big spending that favors his friends and supporters. Indeed, he has been the lone voice of dissent on the City Council for many of Dyer’s big projects. Diamond, a 52-year-old Democrat, has been a consistent supporter of the LGBT community, voting for DP benefits and the DP Registry, and appearing consistently at Pride and other community events.

BUDDY DYER The incumbent won election 10 years ago when Mayor Glenda Hood left office mid-term to become Florida’s Secretary of State. He has been re-elected twice, the last time with 61% of the vote. He’s been criticized for his handling of Occupy protestors and Food Not Bombs activists, and for saddling the city with future financial obligations associated with big initiatives like SunRail, Amway Arena and the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center. But Dyer insists we can responsibly afford them, and that these projects will define a future great city. And he proudly points out that he eliminated the city’s budget deficit during tough times, and that both crime and taxes are down. Dyer recently received Equality Florida’s “Voice for Equality” award for leadership on LGBT issues.

KEN MULVANEY This is the third run at mayor for this commercial real estate professional. The only Republican in this nonpartisan race, Mulvaney is a colorful Irish immigrant with a thick brogue and a feisty disrespect for the incumbent. He rails that Dyer is a big spender that favors cohorts over community. “Not enough money is spent on the needs of the people who live in Orlando,” Mulvaney said during a debate. He promises to review the city’s $350 million budget “line by line.” Mulvaney has engaged in outreach to the LGBT community, but did not respond to questions regarding his stance on LGBT issues by press time.

be one of the youngest mayors of a major city in the nation. Cantone sees that as a beneit. “We need a generational change to shake up the status quo,” he said. Some of Cantone’s key campaign issues include curbing spending on development projects like the Medical City in Lake Nona, the proposed Creative Village (“a Creative Castle”) on the site of the recently demolished O-rena, and the new Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center. He would refocus city spending on affordable housing options and vocational training centers in each city district. Born in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., to schoolteacher parents, Cantone grew up mostly in Virginia. He studied Political Science and International Studies at St. Louis University. Over the past decade he has worked as a progressive lobbyist, political consultant and campaign manager with diverse groups like the Missouri Progressive Vote Coalition, the United States Public Interest Research Group and the Democratic Party of Georgia. |  | An Historic Race from pg.13

and community events while campaigning. Besides having the same sexual orientation, both candidates say they are very different regarding their plans for the city’s future. When asked what the most signiicant difference was between him and his opponent, Ross mentioned his transit and jobs plans.

MAR.29 - APR.11, 2012 // ISSUE 19.07

He most recently served as the Political Director for Organize Now, a progressive communitybased organization committed to increasing civic participation in under-served and disenfranchised communities. “We see who beneits in this city and who does not,” Cantone said, speaking of the city’s current leadership. “It’s the people who have connections with the city leadership—the big developers, the big corporations and most certainly the Chamber of Commerce—not the average worker or the homeowner struggling to pay their mortgage.” Cantone expressed concern about the city funneling money into additional retail and residential projects. “Twenty percent of downtown commercial space is vacant and one-in-ive homes are in foreclosure or inancial distress,” he observed. If elected mayor, Cantone says he would also bridge what he perceives to be a gap between the county and city governments. He referred to the current working relationship between Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Mayor Dyer as “toxic at best.”

“From the start, you have seen friction [between them] on many inancing issues,” Cantone said. “Mayor Dyer’s duties stop where the city boundaries end. Mayor Jacobs represents a shift from the good ol’ boys network in the county.” Cantone also believes Dyer—who he describes as a “Chambercrat”— nurtures greater political ambitions. “I think Mayor Jacobs is focused on local issues and local solutions,” he said. “Unlike Mayor Dyer, she doesn’t have one foot out the door.” Cantone thinks people will respond to his candidacy. “I offer a fresh start that puts the people irst and relects their priorities, not just those of connected big business,” he said. Asked about his chances, Cantone said, “I think anything is possible on April 3. It is going to be determined by who turns out. But I know our message is resonating with people. I’m deinitely optimistic.” City of Orlando elections take place on Tuesday, April 3. In addition to Dyear and Cantone, candidates for mayor include sitting District 1 City Commissioner Phil Diamond and businessman and entrepreneur Ken Mulvaney. |  |

“Also, my extensive marketing background and success in hosting job fairs and business,” he said. “I will use this experience to market Orlando as ‘open for business.’” Smith cites his long-term commitment to District 1 as what sets him apart from Ross. “I have made an investment in District one and purchased my home here,” Smith said. “Mr. Ross has never lived in District 1 and continues to live in District 4, where he can’t even vote for himself.

I attended every redistricting advisory board meeting held to argue to keep my neighborhood in District 1, as it has been for the past 20 years. Mr. Ross, to my knowledge, never attended any of those meetings.” The election for Orlando City Council is Tuesday, April 3. If none of the four candidates receives a majority of the votes, the top two inishers will face off in a run-off election on May 1. |  |

T. PETERSBURG | It was standing room only inside the L-Train on March 22, when nearly 80 people crowded into the downtown theater to discuss issues pertaining speciically to the transgender community. The meeting was inspired by a recent act of transphobia at the Bishop Tavern, which made international news. “One incident brought you here,” Trans*Action Florida (formerly Transgender FORGE) Executive Director Michael Keeffe told the crowd. “But for others, we’re here for the thousands of other incidents of transphobia.” The town hall meeting featured Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith, Tampa Bay Business Guild President Mariruth Kennedy, Stonewall Democrats’ Beth Fountain and Jake Kopmeier from the King of Peace Metropolitan Community Church. Keeffe asked the panel several questions and wanted to know how each organization represented valued inclusion of the transgender community. “I don’t think we can just say it’s ‘the right thing to do,’” said Kennedy. “Inclusion just makes

T. PETERSBURG | April 5 will be a very signiicant day for the future of domestic partnership registries cross Florida—and the beginning of one in St. Petersburg. Nearly two weeks after the Tampa City Council voted to move forward with a domestic partnership registry, St. Petersburg City Councilman Steve Kornell is hopeful that his city will follow suit when he introduces the idea at an April 5 city council meeting. Kornell has told several media outlets that he’s conident such an ordinance—mirrored after the one currently in place in Orlando and forming in Tampa—will have the support of his fellow council members and Mayor Bill Foster. “It is something I support and I don’t need to be convinced it’s a good thing,” Kornell told Watermark in January. “It’s a great idea, we just need to igure out how to make it happen.” Banking on the success of other progressive cities could be the key to making the registry a reality in St. Petersburg. On March 15, more than 20 people lined up to speak at the Tampa City Council meeting and voice support for a proposed domestic partnership registry—and the council unanimously approved it. The ordinance allows for registered domestic partners—both same-sex and opposite-sex—to make critical life decisions concerning hospital visitation, medical decisions and more. “I want to say how pleased I am with such a positive response,” Tampa Councilwoman Yvonne Capin, told the audience at the March 15 meeting. “This reinforces our diversity and Tampa was born of diversity. This is a great place to live and I’m proud we’ve made this place great—and hopefully now it will be even better for my two-week-old grandson to be raised in.” Each present councilmember voiced support of the ordinance before the oficial vote and all applauded Capin’s initiative in bringing the registry to the forefront. “I thought this registry was a great idea,” said Councilman Mike Suarez. “Eleven years ago, Oficer Lois Morerro was killed in the line of duty and there was a ight between her partner and the pension board regarding beneits. I am proud to know we’ll do our part for taking a step toward equality. Hamburger Mary’s cited for 40-plus health code violations Staff Report TAMPA | The popular Hamburger Mary’s in Ybor City was temporarily closed the week of March 10 after more than 40 health code violations were reported by the state. According to state inspectors, more than 75 rodent droppings were found throughout the kitchen, including near the server area, mini-bar area, dish machine, box soda cage, storage room, ice machine and the hostess stand. The state issued a stop sale order on March 6, according to ABC Action News, because 24 gallons of chili was not properly cooled from 135 degrees to 41 degrees within the correct time period. All of that chili was tossed out. The violations were corrected and Hamburger Mary’s reopened approximately 24 hours after the citations were issued. Other violations spanning a 14-month period include food stored on the loor, potentially hazardous food thawing in standing water, and raw animal food stored over cooked food. The restaurant was featured on ABC Action News’ Dirty Dining website. |  |

The Tampa Bay Business Guild restructures itself to better serve LGBT businesses Steve Blanchard EDITOR@WATERMARKONLINE.COM

T

AMPA BAY | At 30 years old, the Tampa Bay Business Guild is embedded in the history of LGBT Tampa Bay. But as technology and business needs have evolved, so too must the organization that promotes the success of LGBT and allied businesses throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. “It’s important for us to recognize 30 years of history,” said TBBG board president Mariruth Kennedy, adding that in December the guild will host a 30th anniversary party. “But we also have to meet the new needs of the community, and one of the things we did was change the meeting structure.” What used to be monthly dinner meetings in hotel ballrooms are now cocktail-style gatherings at venues throughout the area. It gives members and guests more time to mingle, share ideas and, of course, exchange business cards. “The system right now is that eight times a year we’ll have networking functions held around Tampa Bay,” Kennedy explained. “These are about meeting people who can help move your business forward. It’s a real chance to get introduced to other like-minded business people.” Kennedy added that it’s the mission of every board member to introduce themselves to whomever walks through the door, and then to introduce that person to another member. Kennedy said complaints about the Guild becoming too “cliqueish” and staying squirreled away in a hotel ballroom helped ignite the change. |  | Domestic Partner

“A new board is more willing to listen to what people are saying and is less defensive,” Kennedy said. In addition to the eight networking mingles this year, the board has planned three programmed events, beginning with one in April in conjunction with the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. The April 10 meeting will focus on how businesses can become certiied LGBT businesses, which isn’t as easy as some may think. “This is something that would normally cost a business owner $400 to become certiied,” Kennedy said. “For members, it’s free.” Members can attend the April meeting for $25 and for non-

Membership for the TBBG is $130 a year, which includes free entry into the networking events. For non-members, those events are $10 a person. The new structure is not only enticing new members to check out the guild, but it’s bringing back some former members who haven’t been to a meeting in several years. “It’s a great time for folks to come back to an entity that they valued at one point and then something happened to make them think it didn’t it them anymore,” Kennedy said. Besides bringing LGBT and allied business owners together, the TBBG is taking a more active role in the public in 2012. Two more arrested in Caspersen Beach sting Staff Report

V

ENICE | Two men were arrested for indecent exposure Monday, March 19, during an ongoing undercover investigation of indecent activities at Caspersen Beach in Venice. According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Ofice, which patrols the beach, the two men—a 36-year-old and a 78-year-old—were each charged with one count of exposing themselves to a sheriff’s deputy. Reports say that shortly before 12:30 p.m., a deputy was approached near a canoe launch by the 78-year-old male, who asked the undercover “how the view was.” He then offered that the view was better in a wooded area a few feet away. That’s when the oficer said he followed the man into the woods and the man turned around and exposed

himself. In a separate incident two hours later, shortly before 2:30 p.m., another deputy was on the north nature trail near a picnic area when a 36-year-old man approached him, struck a conversation and then invited the deputy to join him down a nearby, secluded path. The man reportedly grabbed the undercover deputy as they walked down the trail and exposed himself. Watermark does not release the names of those arrested in victimless crimes like indecent exposure. Both men were taken to the Sarasota County Jail for processing. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Ofice has conducted multiple stings over the past two years following an increase in complaints of indecent activities at the beach’s parking lot and within its wooded trails. Several men have been arrested for similar cases of alleged indecent exposure at areas throughout the county park. |  |

Sawmill celebrates first year as co-op

A fitting tribute 5 years after Ryan Skipper’s murder, his family continues to share his story Steve Blanchard

UBERNDALE | Each March, Lynn and Pat Mulder prepare themselves for an anniversary no parent wants to recognize. It was March 14, 2007—just over ive years ago—that their son, Ryan Keith Skipper, was stabbed nearly 20 times and his body dumped on the side of the road. He was killed simply because he was gay. “It gets easier with time, but the anniversary is a very dificult time for us, even ive years out,” said Lynn, Ryan’s father. The two men responsible for Ryan’s death—Joseph Bearden and William Brown Jr.—are serving life prison sentences after both were found guilty in 2009. The way in which Polk County Sheriff Judd handled the investigation—and the comments he made about Ryan’s supposed activities the night of his murder—still upsets those who were close to Ryan. Today, both Mulders and their son, Damien Skipper, are active in pressing lawmakers to pass protections for the LGBT community. The family is happy that the two

men responsible for the death of Ryan will live the rest of their lives behind bars, but that doesn’t make their loss any easier. “I don’t believe there is closure,” says Pat Mulder. “I know that it’s a word we use because there is no other word better to use. But I think I don’t ever want closure where Ryan is concerned. I want his memory to stay alive and closure isn’t what I want. I wanted fairness, and I feel that’s what we got with their sentencing.” For Ryan’s big brother, the anniversary has a larger impact on him with each anniversary and reminds him of the brother and best friend with whom he can no longer share life’s big moments. “You have to make it easier by continuing to tell Ryan’s story and the life that he lived,” Damien says. “It gets easier to share his story with so many people and we all try to do that.”

ACCIDENTAL ACTIVISTS

Before the murder of Ryan Skipper, the family had never been involved in activism. Since Ryan was out to his family, they were aware of the LGBT community, but they had never actively worked for change. “Joe Saunders of Equality Florida

coined the phrase ‘accidental activists’ for us,” Lynn laughed. “Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be so active.” Pat admits that she still gets nervous when she speaks in crowds, or especially to lawmakers. But she’s getting more conident with each visit to Tallahassee. “I’m less nervous than I was at one time,” she said. “I don’t think you can talk to enough people to make them understand how important equality is. I’ve gotten stronger and it’s sort of a huge growth spurt for me.” When Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith irst met the Mulders it was immediately after Ryan’s murder. The LGBT advocacy organization helped the family cope while putting a spotlight on the Polk County murder. “The murder was senseless,” Smith said. “But I’ve been amazed at how his family has resisted bitterness and stayed dedicated to speaking out. They have offered themselves up every single time we’ve asked.” Barely a year after Ryan was killed, the Mulders found themselves on the road to a Fort Lauderdale symposium to offer support to the mother of Simmie Williams, a 17-year-old transgender woman who was shot and killed. Smith remembers the embrace the two

ADE CITY | For more than a decade, LGBT campers have enjoyed the peaceful yet festive atmosphere of Sawmill Campground. But after the campground was owned for three years by straight men from 2008-2011, residents recognized a need for change. So residents took matters into their own hands and the 120-acre expanse designated itself a co-op—the irst gay-owned co-op in the country. This April, shareholders, members and guests will celebrate the irst anniversary of its historic decision to become the nation’s irst gay-owned community. “We had to raise $4.25 million to accomplish this,” said board member Al Ferguson, who has been involved with the co-op from the very beginning. “The previous owners wouldn’t reinvest in the infrastructure and services of the property. We got fed up with it and wouldn’t take it anymore.” That’s when a group of 10 people began researching the ins and outs of creating a co-op—a not-for-proit entity controlled by invested shareholders. There are currently 90 shareholders, and more investment opportunities are available—each share is $28,000. “That was the future of Sawmill,” Ferguson said. “That’s how we started and it took us a year to get everything in order.” After one year under the new designation, Sawmill has reported growth, and its membership has surged. “January through March is typically the slowest time of year because of winter,” Ferguson said. “But our membership growth has been dramatic in terms of new members joining—we’re somewhere past 2,000 new members in the past 60 days.” Ferguson added that the campground’s revenue has also exceeded records, which translates into more physical improvements at Sawmill. Improvements that are already noticeable include a spruced up area around the clothing-optional pool and a modernized septic system, which had been a cause of concern for years, Ferguson said. “There have also been signiicant improvements in light, sound and the buildings,” Ferguson added. “There’s an obvious re-investment on our events and making it a fun place to visit.” In 2011, Sawmill played host to the largest LGBT Fourth of July celebration in the United States with its sizeable ireworks display. Its Halloween attractions and New Year’s Eve celebrations also upstaged anything the campground had done previously. It’s an atmosphere many wouldn’t expect in rural, conservative Pasco County—where the campground has notoriously conlicted with local government agencies. But even that relationship is changing for the better,

Several nearby hotels now have a symbiotic relationship with the campground, meaning Sawmill guests who can’t stay on site or prefer a hotel room can do so with nearly a half-dozen facilities less than 10 minutes away. To celebrate its irst year anniversary, Sawmill will host RuPaul the weekend of March 30-April 1. The appearance will be the drag superstar’s only live U.S. performance this year. The following weekend, other stars from the Logo network will make live appearances, including celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz. “People would be shocked how deep of a reach Sawmill has in the state and in the country,” Ferguson said. Ferguson said plans are underway to organize the irst Pasco County Pride in December, which would be a family-friendly celebration on the grounds. Regulars can also look forward to improved, free wi-i service on the campground in the near future. For more information, visit FLSawmill.com. |  |

But Ryan, who would have been 30 years old now, still gives them strength. “It’s amazing the opportunities that open themselves up when you least expect it,” Pat said. “I was in an antique store one time and had the opportunity to speak with two gentlemen who were having a dificult time with the city in which they lived. They weren’t receiving equal opportunities. For some reason, I found myself eavesdropping and thought, ‘How can I get into this conversation?’”

“It’s interesting how a memory of Ryan will blindside you and cause a tear to roll,” said Lynn. That day—that week—your thoughts tend to gravitate to what happened. She will be happy to know she’s named after her uncle, and when I learned that was going to be her name I was so tickled.” All of Ryan’s surviving relatives remain active in LGBT causes. Pat and Lynn Mulder continue to speak to lawmakers and support the parents of other children lost to hate crimes. Damien is involved in Equality California and discusses LGBT equality with coworkers and friends whenever he gets a chance. It will always be about opening doors to others by sharing Ryan’s story. “I’ve always said all along that he should never be in vain and that he gave up his life,” Pat said. “I know I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure that doesn’t happen. It wasn’t until after she left the store that she’d realized she experienced what she calls a “Ryan Moment.” “I got home and told Lynn, ‘Ryan made me go into an antique store today, and you won’t believe what I got into!’” Pat laughed. “You never know when I’m going to ind them, but it’s interesting how many different times folks give me an opportunity to talk with them. Those are all Ryan Moments—I can’t imagine any other reason for those opportunities.” While most memories of Ryan are pleasant ones and the act of sharing his story keeps his memory alive, the pain of his death is still as fresh as it was in March 2007.

women shared upon meeting. “It was an amazing moment that is indescribable,” Smith said. “When Denise King [Williams’ mother] looked into the eyes of Pat Mulder, there was an instant connection. When they hugged it was like the rest of the room disappeared.” Pat remembers that meeting— and many others just like it. It’s something she treasures, but also the kind of greeting she hopes will never have to happen again. “I truly mean it when I say I wish there was never another parent who had to feel like that,” Pat said. “It totally destroys your heart. Just to see them in that initial agonizing pain is so dificult, I just wish there was some way I could hold all of them. I wish that we could carry that pain for them, just for awhile.” Since Ryan’s murder in 2007, the State of Florida and the country have seen signiicant changes in LGBT equality. In 2008, Florida passed its anti-bullying law and in 2009, President Obama signed the Mathew Shepard Hate Crimes Act. Eight states now recognize samesex marriages, and in 2010, Florida inally ended its ban on gays and lesbians adopting children. “We were able to lobby with Equality Florida for the antibullying law,” Lynn said. “Some of the oficers were more receptive than others and we got to speak with the Attorney General’s staff members about hate crimes. I was so surprised when it passed. I’d like to think we had some inluence. It was an honor to go with Equality Florida—there is no way Pat and I could have done that on our own.” Pat is amazed at how quickly change has come—even though she realizes there is a long journey ahead to reach full equality for the LGBT community. “Since Ryan’s death, I never thought I’d see adoption be available to gays and lesbians in Florida,” she said. “We have really made some amazing steps in the last ive years. Can you imagine what the next ive years will bring?” Hopefully it will bring a lot more change, Lynn said, who is more acutely aware of discriminatory practices than he’s ever been. “In my everyday day-to-day

he leading national organization opposing same-sex marriage has sought to split the Democratic Party base by pitting African-Americans and Hispanics against gayrights groups, according to conidential strategy memos made public by court oficials in Maine. “The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks—two key Democratic constituencies,” says one of the memos. It also suggests “interrupting” the process of cultural assimilation

for Hispanics in hopes of curtailing support for samesex marriage. The documents, dating from 2009, were written by the National Organization for Marriage and had been kept from the public until March 26, when they were unsealed by court oficials in Maine. They were part of a twopronged legal challenge of Maine’s inancial disclosure laws. Still unresolved is whether the NOM will have to release the names of donors to its successful 2009 campaign to ban same-sex marriage in Maine. “With the veil lifted, Americans everywhere can now see the ugly politics that

MARRIAGE ADVOCATES HAVE ‘MASS WEDDING’ IN OHIO

Gay rights advocates declared victory after New Hampshire’s failed attempt at repealing its gay marriage law, saying it resounds in a region where opponents have concentrated efforts to reverse momentum. The state House voted March 21 to kill the measure, ending a push by its new Republican majority to rescind New Hampshire’s two-year-old law.

Ohio doesn’t legally recognize same-sex marriages, but that didn’t stop more than 200 gay and lesbian couples from participating in a Cleveland event they dubbed an ``illegal mass wedding’’ on March 25. Priests and ministers were on hand as couples from around Ohio said vows in front of family and friends as part of an event advocating for the state to recognize same-sex marriages.

Leadership matters: The legacy of two Ryans

D

OES THE CHARACTER OF OUR

leaders impact the quality, even the very existence, of our lives?

Ryan Skipper might be alive today if his civic leaders had denounced anti-gay bigotry through word and deed instead of cultivating fertile ground for hatred to grow. If elected and community leaders in and around Polk County had championed inclusive public policies to relect the inherent value and worth of all the citizens, maybe Ryan Skipper would not have been targeted and killed just for being gay. Many in this community know the story of Ryan Skipper, the effervescent young man from Winter Haven who was brutally murdered in 2007. My wife, Vicki Nantz, and I made a documentary about Ryan’s story— doubly tragic because Ryan was harassed and attacked throughout his life before the horriic events of his murder, and was even persecuted after his death. Our documentary, Accessory to Murder: Our Culture’s Complicity in the Death of Ryan Skipper, focused on the pervasive societal inluences that created an environment where two young men hated Ryan Skipper so much—just because he was gay—that they butchered him and dumped his body on a dark road, torched and abandoned his car at “Lake Pansy,” and bragged to their friends about having done the world a favor by “getting rid of a faggot.” Every institution in Ryan’s world failed him—schools, churches, government, media, and law enforcement.

No civic leader told Ryan Skipper’s would-be killers that gay people are worthy of respect and dignity. In fact, through their words and deeds, those leaders reinforced the opposite: that gay people are “less than.” Imagine if the public message in Polk County had been different. In Orlando, the message is different. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has long been an ally of the LGBT community, and recently exhibited extraordinary leadership when he championed the Orlando Domestic Partnership Registry, providing several critical rights and beneits to domestic partner families. The positive results of that act have been immediate, important, and long-reaching. Not only did Dyer immediately agree to support the DPR when it was proposed to him, he said and did all the right things to get it done ASAP. He assigned his highest level staff. He publicly recognized our families on the same level as his own. He did everything in his power to persuade our reluctant Orange County Mayor, Teresa Jacobs, to join him in doing the right thing for the Orlando/Orange County community, and when she declined he made sure the Orlando DPR would be open to all citizens regardless of where they live. Buddy proudly wore his best red tie (in unity with the red-clad LGBT community) to the two public hearings on the DPR, and on Jan. 12, the day that the Orlando DPR took effect, Buddy and his entire staff wore red and created a wonderful event for those of us that “got registered” that irst day. The happy (and transformative) images of that day were broadcast across the nation, and since that day Orlando has registered more than 300 couples. The Orlando DPR is now being used as a model by other Central Florida communities—like Tampa, St. Petersburg and Volusia County—and Orlando staff is working to help those governments implement DPRs for their citizens. An important message has been sent along with the beneits resulting from passage of the Orlando DPR: Gay people are human beings whose lives and relationships must be valued and respected by society. That is a powerful message that changes hearts and minds, and literally saves lives. By contrast, a failure of leadership on this issue has negative and potentially deadly, consequences. Leaders who delay, waver, obfuscate, denigrate, and look for excuses to deny send

a dangerous message. Their words and actions suggest that gay people are not worthy of respect, that their relationships are not legitimate—that they are “less than” all others. That message only feeds hatred and promotes violence. At the irst Orlando public hearing on the DPR, a young man, coincidentally named Ryan, stepped to the podium and told the audience about the harassment and abuse he had suffered in his life because he was gay, and he said that he had come to City Hall because equality was important to him. Then his voice faltered, and he paused. After a long silence, an obviously moved Mayor

Dyer thanked him for his testimony and assured Ryan that he was welcome in that chamber and in this City. This Ryan left Orlando City Hall that day feeling embraced by his community, with the knowledge that his government was proudly going to pass an ordinance to protect gay families. If only Ryan Skipper, and so many others like him, had received that message and felt that embrace. We are grateful to a Leader like Buddy Dyer for speaking out with a societychanging message of acceptance and equality for all. That is the message we must hear from all of our leaders. We are listening. |  |

Trayvon and the lessons underneath

A

N UNARMED TEENAGE BOY

walks to a 7-11 to buy Skittles and an iced tea. On the way home, and inside the gated community where he was staying with relatives, he is pursued by a neighborhood watch captain who confronts him and then shoots him dead.

It happened in nearby Sanford, but this senseless and gut-wrenching tragedy has caused universal outrage. And it has mobilized the African-American community like nothing since the height of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. “How do we go from this moment to a movement that creates change?” the Rev. Jesse Jackson challenged at a local rally. “If it’s a moment we go home. If it’s a movement, we go to war.” In a situation like the tragic killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, where right and wrong appear well-deined, it’s dificult to look unwaveringly at causation. But the effort can reap unexpected dividends. Just ask the gay community.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, AIDS was killing tens of thousands of gay men each year. There was no treatment, no cure, and people were terriied. Patients were quarantined and emergency medical providers refused direct contact. In some cases, gay men were forbidden from working in hospitals or handling food in restaurants. Most infuriating, the federal government devoted few resources to the horriic and growing epidemic. Research grants languished in bureaucratic red tape. President Ronald Reagan never addressed the crisis publicly. So LGBT activists took to the street with a desperate plea: our lives matter, too. “We’re living through war, but where they’re living it’s peacetime,” cried author and playwright Larry Kramer. “And we’re all in the same country!” This was the obvious message of the AIDS crisis; the obvious teaching opportunity. But courageous leaders like Kramer compelled us to examine further, and to our everlasting credit we rose to the challenge. At irst few wanted to consider that unprotected sex was the principal means by which HIV is transmitted. Bathhouses stubbornly refused to offer condoms or post warnings. All this speculation about HIV was anti-sex—just when it was starting to get fun. “I am sick of guys who moan that giving up careless sex until this blows over is worse than death,” Kramer said. “How can they value life so little?” But Kramer dug even deeper, crying out that neither sex nor HIV was the principal culprit of our demise—it was the closet. “As more and more of my friends die, I have less and less sympathy for men who are afraid their mommies will ind out or their bosses will ind out,” he challenged. “Unless we can generate visible mass numbers, we are going to die.” Slowly, attitudes changed. Condoms became ubiquitous. We learned to ask for safe sex. Non-proits sprouted to care for people with AIDS and offer HIV testing and counseling. And we began to take care of our own, through fundraising and volunteerism. We discovered that Kramer was right: being gay isn’t about sex,

We discovered that Larry Kramer was right: being gay isn’t about sex, it’s about self-respect.

it’s about self-respect. Things have been different ever since. Similarly, the deepest lesson from the death of Trayvon Martin may also be unpalatable at irst. Like AIDS and homophobia, it’s obvious that the racist objectiication of young black men as thugs is rampant in our culture and has tragic consequences. But as with HIV, there are more unsettling questions worth asking. Why are young black men stereotyped in the irst place? And what can be done about it? There are close to ive million AfricanAmerican men ages 15 to 29 in this country. According to U.S. Bureau of Justice statistics, more than 30% can expect to spend time

in prison over the course of their lifetime. The growing disenfranchisement of a large percentage of African American boys, and our culture’s brick-like response, is an epidemic every bit as tragic and costly as AIDS. And as troubling as it is to confront, this epidemic is at least partially responsible for the stereotyping that placed an innocent Trayvon Martin in harm’s way. Like Kramer, Jackson invoked war to describe the rampant racial stereotyping that led to Trayvon’s death. But if there’s to be war, I hope it will also be against the devastating disenfranchisement of AfricanAmerican youth in our country. And I hope it’s as successful as the stillevolving war on AIDS. |  |

Huxley (Brave New World) were alive today, and if either had decided to tap into the teen market, the product would be The Hunger Games. This social satire and teen action ilm mostly works because the story has drive. It may be a bit utilitarian—and sometimes blatantly simple—but it’s still engaging stuff.

Lawrence (Oscar nominee for Winter’s Bone) is a teenager who lives in a sci-i version of coal-mining West Virginia. Under her government’s totalitarian rule, each year, her home district must sacriice two teens to take part in the life-and-death Hunger Games. Lawrence bravely volunteers to take the place of her sister. In this brutal contest, Lawrence and local boy Hutcherson compete against 22 other teens where only one youth can walk out alive.

The Games are heavily monitored by the state and televised for the bourgeois of the Capital City to revel in the barbarity. As a satire and a romance, it’s not sturdy stuff. The difference between the ridiculous effete of high society and the simple folk is a little overblown. However, to teenagers raised on reality TV, the symbolism is hard to miss. The violence is tame enough to get a PG-13 rating The Hunger Games actually works because the acting is solid and the action is well executed. Also, it’s a good, luffy way to introduce teenagers to the politics of Huxley and Orwell. |  |

no knowledge of ballet, they have more than likely heard of the epic Swan Lake, set to the music of Tchaikovsky. But what many may not know is that it’s a production of four acts that can create a very long evening.

“Our audiences aren’t geared toward those evenings anymore,” says Orlando Ballet artistic director Robert Hill. “There is some great stuff in Swan Lake, so I’ve condensed it down to its most poignant moments.” The result is Swans: Black & White, a trimmed down version of the classic saga, showing March 30-April 1 at the Bob Carr

Performing Arts Center. Hill says that his new look at Swan Lake still tells the story of the princess who is cursed to live as a swan by day, and the prince who must choose a bride as he approaches his 21st birthday. It just does so in a more concise way. “I put this two-act production together several years ago,” Hill says, adding that it wasn’t as dificult as

some might think to trim down the classic tale. “You want to tell the story, obviously. For example, in the irst act I looked at the information that was delivered about the prince celebrating his 21st birthday, his mother’s gift to him, and his learning that he must select a wife. So that information is given in a brief mind sequence during the overture—then we’re directly into the second act featuring the lakeside scene, which contains the iconic images of Swan Lake.” Nearly 50 performers are featured in the production and Hill is hopeful that Swans: Black & White will draw a crowd, thanks to the popularity of the ilm, Black Swan, and Orlando’s strong arts community. ADE CITY | IN EARLY APRIL, THE

center of the LGBT universe will be… a 120acre wooded campground in rural Central Florida! And Miami-based “dance entrepreneur” Glenn Douglas Packard will be in the thick of it. The Emmy-nominated Packard, who has worked with megastars like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Liza Minelli, Marc Anthony and Pink, will introduce his Boots n Boys erotic dance troupe—think gay

But Boots n Boys, with choreography by the in-demand Packard, is sure to be a highlight. The brand new troupe will appear both Friday and Saturday nights, and Packard recommends arriving early to get “up close and personal” with the gyrating hunks. ACH SEASON OF ABC’S CELEBRITY

dance competition series Dancing With The Stars raises eyebrows when it announces its cast of contestants, and this season is no different. Tennis great, winner of 59 Grand Slam titles and breast cancer survivor Martina Navratilova is the newest member of the LGBT community to join the cast of the popular show. Navratilova, 55, has broken or tied almost every women’s tennis record imaginable. She also broke a few taboos. She came out as a

lesbian in 1981 and 10 years later she found herself in the middle of a much-publicized legal wrangle when her ex, Judy Nelson, sued for “galimony.” Since then, Martina has racked up more titles, a few more breakups and survived breast cancer. Age certainly doesn’t hold her back. Navratilova continued to win

tennis matches and tournaments well into her 40s and maintains an impressive, toned igure. But how she will fare donning high-heels and lashy gowns dancing in front of millions of television viewers? Partnered with the oh-so dreamy Tony Dovolani, (who has yet to take a contestant all the way to win the coveted Mirrorball Trophy), Navratilova may have her work cut out for her. Watermark caught up with the Czech native amidst a grueling training and travel schedule split between Los Angeles and her home in Colorado. Navratilova’s enthusiasm and positive outlook seem primed to take her further than many may believe.

MARTINA NAVRATILOVA: You know they’ve been asking me to do the show for years but I’ve been hesitant to go for it. I’ve seen some other athletes compete— including my good friend Monica Seles—and I’ve gotta say, none of them warned me about how challenging it really is! I’m really going to give it my all, though! DID YOU GET TO CHOOSE YOUR DANCE PARTNER?

No. They keep it a surprise. They gave me a couple of hints so I had a good idea, but I really didn’t know for sure until the day Tony knocked on my door. I was hoping it was him, so luckily I got my wish. HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING WITH THE HUNKY TONY DOVOLANI?

I can still see myself in that big fancy dress that my parents put me in for this ballroom dancing class. Back then, I had to wear a garter belt because there weren’t any pantyhose in my country. Ever since I’ve had this fear of dancing—I don’t even like to dance by myself! But it’s time I face my fear and take this on. That’s a big reason I decided to do the show. The other is, as the itness ambassador for AARP for the last four years, I’m constantly encouraging folks to stay active, lead healthy lifestyles and not be afraid to try something new. So I igure I’ve got to lead by example. What better way to do that than by taking on ballroom dancing?

HAVE YOU SIZED UP YOUR COMPETITION YET?

Oh yeah, and it’s intimidating! Some of these folks have actual rhythm and I can tell it’ll help them in their training. I’ve got my eye on Jaleel White and Roshon Fegan. But I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve and I’m hoping America will see how much time and effort I’m putting in to get this down. I’m totally out of my comfort zone, and that’s ok. I can do anything I put my mind to. A lot of that comes from my years of discipline and training on the tennis court, so I’m going to use that to my advantage.

“I say bring it on: the hair, the make-up, the dresses, even the high-heels—but I draw the line at fake nails.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HAVING TO DON LOTS OF SEQUINS AND BALL GOWNS?

I recently got a call from the website Funny or Die and they asked me if I would do this skit for them, playing RuPaul! I’m thinking, “Oh, my God, that would be hilarious. Dress me up like RuPaul!” But then, my manager called and says “Leslie, it’s not RuPaul they want you to play, it’s Ron Paul.” [Laughs] I get infuriated watching those GOP debates. I try to pay as little attention as I can, but because I was asked to play Ron Paul, I had to watch those debates. I’m just labbergasted. They’re trotting out—especially Mr. Santorum— saying things about “it’s a choice [to be gay]” even when it’s been scientiically proven otherwise. It just loors me. With his views on women alone, [Santorum] is going to set us back 20-30 years! I wish Santorum would beat Romney out for the nomination because he would get slaughtered. SPEAKING OF FAMILIES—ARE YOU DATING ANYONE?

watermark YOUR LGBT LIFE.

In all honesty, while I’m for gay marriage, when I look back on my generation, we wanted to be gay and not have anything to do with the white picket fence or having children. Now there’s this whole generation of gays coming up that want all that and God bless ‘em. We didn’t want the restraint of all that “straight” culture. I think there are people that want to be partnered and there’s people that do not. I am happy. I don’t get lonely. I have a huge network of friends. I also think, with my career, it’s really hard to sustain a relationship. The other day, while taping this series The Secret Life of the American Teenager, I thought to myself, “these are long hours. If I had to walk into my apartment and be civil, let alone speak to someone, it would be dificult. So, I am happily single. If I could register with somebody, it would be myself. [Laughs] GOING BACK A BIT TO ONE OF YOUR MORE INFAMOUS ROLES…HOW DID YOU GET THE PART OF BEVERLY LESLIE IN WILL & GRACE?

MAR.29 - APR.11, 2012 // ISSUE 19.07

Originally, it was written for Joan Collins. She was supposed to steal Rosario the maid from Megan Mullaly’s character, Karen Walker. Then, the two were going to get in a ight over it and end up pulling each other’s wigs off. Apparently, at the last minute, Joan Collins’ manager called and said they couldn’t pull Ms. Collins wig off. So, they ired her and sent out an open call. I went and auditioned. The minute I walked in, they knew I was the right one. I did that one episode where I steal Rosario away from Karen. Then, they called my manager to let me know they wanted me back. I did two episodes in the third season. I didn’t do near as many as people think. I did maybe 12 in all, but they were memorable episodes. Then, after all of it was said and done, my manager called me and said, “Are you sitting down? You’ve been nominated for an Emmy.” It was for “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy.” Well, I igured I wouldn’t win—and honey, I did! DO YOU MISS PLAYING BEVERLY LESLIE?

Oh, yes. I miss mainly working with Megan Mullaly. We never rehearsed or anything. They

would start rolling and we’d start throwing our lines back and forth, like verbal ping pong. WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO GET YOU TWO TO DO A SPIN OFF SERIES?

I don’t think it would happen. The network owns the rights. We were actually talking about doing a musical based on it. They put the kibosh on it immediately. Also, the creators of [Will & Grace] would have to be the ones to write it and they are so rich. They don’t want to work anymore.

YOU DO A LOT OF WORK WITH RECOVERING ADDICTS. AS A RECOVERING SUBSTANCE ABUSER YOURSELF, IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU CAN OFFER TO THIS GENERATION?

True recovery can’t happen on TV. You see these shows like Celebrity Rehab and I don’t know about all that. All of the 12-step programs tell you that it’s not a psychologist or a therapist that’s going to help you; it’s someone who’s been there. I have a huge following within the sober community, attending conventions as the keynote speaker. I work a lot with kids getting off drugs and that’s what keeps me grounded. I’m in a line of work where I get my ass kissed a lot. You start to think, “I’m big— I’m grand.” Then, you go work with those kids and it just puts your feet back on the ground. My primary purpose in life is to stay sober and help other alcoholics and drug addicts learn sobriety. Until I got sober, I lived my whole life for my work. Now, I know acting is just my job. People like Lindsey Lohan have the same issue. They get caught up in the glory and end up feeling very empty. You have to ind a balance. Acting is my “job.” It’s a wonderful job but what’s given me the inner peace and the sense of self is the work I’ve done in recovery, not only on myself but others. |  | Read the full, uncut interview at WatermarkOnline.com

Now the sexy crooner is touring with his band, Daughtry, promoting its third album, titled Break The Spell. Daughtry stops at Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall on Wednesday, April 11 and at Orlando’s Hard Rock Live on Thursday, April 12. Two songs are already on the charts—”Crawling Back To You” is a hit and “Renegade” is quickly

The “Little Big Piece” is a 3-ton section of the ships hull and the second largest single piece of the ship ever recovered. Along with the hull fragment, more than

OVERHEARD PRESIDENTIAL ADVICE A capacity crowd illed the Carol Morsani Hall at the David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts on March 21 when President Bill Clinton came to town. The 42nd President lectured about “Embracing our Common Humanity” and spoke about building the world with more partners and fewer adversaries. “Denial is not a very good strategy for renewal,” he said. “The challenges we face are manageable, but we can’t do it if we’re mad all the time. It’s interfering with

our ability to think.” The President’s visit concluded with a question and answer session moderated by former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio. Other notables in the audience included Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, former Tampa Mayor Sandy Friedman, former Florida CFO Alex Sink, Straz Center CEO Judy Lisi and Jimmy Donal Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia.

BE WHO YOU ARE— SMOKER OR NOT—BAR

One thing is always certain at Chelsea Bar and Nightclub in Tampa—the drinks will be

lowing and the place will be crowded. But now, there’s even another reason to check out the “Be who you are bar”—it’s indoor area is now smoke free! According to bar owner Nikki Turnon, the staff of the bar has brainstormed for weeks trying to ind ways to improve the popular nightspot on N. Florida Avenue. The answer was making the indoor areas smoke free, especially since the large outdoor patio could easily accommodate anyone who would like to light up. “We had to conclude that it was the right thing to do,” Turnon said. “Nonsmokers should have an option since they have chosen not to smoke; Smokers should have te

right to smoke. Since we have space for both, our big picture goal is to welcome everyone.” Other changes are on the way soon, Turnon said, but added that details weren’t quite ready to be publicized.

MR. CODE PACKS THE FLAMINGO

Leather men of all varieties descended upon the Flamingo Resort the weekend of March 24 to see four men vie for the title of Mr. Code 2012. In all, four men competed for the coveted title and the chance to compete at the International Mr. Leather Contest in Chicago in May. This year’s winner was Leatherman

MAR.29 - APR.11, 2012 // ISSUE 19.07

Stephen Hedrick Hedrick won the contest by showing his knowledge of leather in the personal interview, his fantasy wear on stage and by answering one of the more dificult questions of the night, which involved describing each member of the judging panel as a tool he would ind in his garage, and explaining why he picked that particular tool to correspond with that judge. The evening wrapped with several demonstrations—one including ire—and vendor booths selling all things leather.

OVERHEARD WHAT A KNOCK OUT Last week, Mr. Sisters and Parliament House alum Jeff Munzig announced on Facebook that he and domestic partner Gregg have purchased their own bar; Knockouts Tavern in Merritt Island. The venue oficially opened its doors March 26. “I’m inally my own boss,” Munzig posted. “I guess I inally have to grow up.”

IT’S A SIN

Speaking of Mr. Sisters, some of you may have seen work going on around the former Mr. Sisters location. Turns

out, this is not part of the previously thought Sin Orlando concept that was thought to be opening in the location. Sin Orlando’s Facebook page clariied. “Thanks for following our page! The pre-existing business owners are trying to re-invent their previous concept as a straight bar,” they posted. “Because of the politics, pending lawsuits against BDR entertainment (all public record) and other stop holds, we believe this space will once again become available. We are pursuing other location options but we are keeping an eye on the space. Do not be worried

about location, as anything we pick will have taller ceilings to accommodate a mezzanine level, world class light/effect show and better parking.” As of late, the staple pink exterior of the former MrSisters has been repainted and one poster noted, “the club is called Off Limits” and is set to open soon.

MONDAYS WITH MARTHA

On Monday, March 26, Macy’s at Millenia Mall heated up with a chili cookoff hosted by none other

than domestic goddess and ultimate entrepreneur, Martha Stewart. This ultimate chili cook-off featured hunks with hoses from four Orlando ire stations competing for the “Best Chili in Orlando” title. The participating ire stations included: Firehouse 11—Beast of the East Chili with head chef Fireighter Chris McKeon; Firehouse 12—Tailgate Chili with head chef Lt. Blaine Spurling; Firehouse 3— Rodney’s Chili with head chef Fireighter Bradley Shanks; and Firehouse 1—Big House Chili with head chef Engineer Pat Kelly. During the competition,

MAR.29 - APR.11, 2012 // ISSUE 19.07

Martha chatted with the audience, shared stories, her own cooking secrets and highlighted her Martha Stewart Collection Enameled Cast Iron Cookware line, of which each ire station utilized to stir up their own chili recipes. Not only did you get to bask in the magniicence that is Martha, the audience had the opportunity to sample Martha’s own chili and cornbread. Joining Martha for the cook-off was Executive Director of Food and Entertaining at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Lucinda Scala Quinn.

I

have known Tristan for over 10 years and I count him among my best friends. The problem is that Tristan’s boyfriend, Seamus, is too touchy-feely. Seamus likes to massage my back, sometimes so hard it hurts. When he jokes around, he tweaks my nipples and pulls the hair on my chest, arms and legs. I’m not a prude—my friends and I rub each other’s shoulders and play grab ass all the time—but I’ve seen Seamus cross the line with the other guys, too. When I’ve asked him to stop, I can see that it really hurts his feelings; to him, it’s just his way of showing his affection for me. I know Seamus means well and he’s genuinely a nice guy, but he doesn’t seem to know the difference between horseplay and inappropriate touching. How would you handle it? —Sore in Sarasota Dear SIS, So you’re sure that it’s just his way? ‘Cause I’m not so sure. Seamus seems to me like a serial groper. Here’s the way the Truth would navigate these treacherous seas: I’d pull Tristan aside and say something like, “Hey you know we really all love Seamus, but the next time he grabs my nipples, I’m going to punch him in the face.” Your long time friend will know that you are addressing with humor a touchy subject, and if he’s any kind of friend, he’ll have a conversation with his other half about his grab-handed-ness. Unless Tristan is blind. In which case my answer would be completely different. If it is genuinely a problem for more than just you, it’s not your burden to carry. Talk to you friend and tell him to get his boyfriend in line and have him keep his hands in his pockets.

DEAR TRUTH,

M

y partner, Tara, and I have been together for four years and together we are raising my seven-year-old daughter, Hannah. Earlier this month, one of Hannah’s friends asked me why Hannah “has two mommies.” Normally, I would’ve jumped at the chance to talk about my relationship with Tara, but I happen to know that this girl’s family is evangelical Christian and I doubt they would’ve approved of my explanation. We live in a small conservative town and I don’t want to alienate Hannah from the kids in her school, but I feel like I a coward for not answering the question honestly. On top of all that, Tara is pissed at me because she thinks that I’m ashamed of her. What do you think? —Knotted in North Florida Dear Southern Alabama, Given the facts of a case—seven-year-old children, a conservative, Southern hometown, evangelical Christian families—your behavior doesn’t indicate embarrassment; it indicates common sense. There is a part of me that wants to say “Get out of there!” But we choose our homes for a reason, and I’m sure you have yours. Your daughter’s well-being is undoubtedly the most important factor at play. If her friends are beginning to ask, then it’s time to begin that conversation. Start slow, and use language she would understand, but don’t spin some fantasy about two princesses. Kids today will soon enough igure it out, and will igure out that it’s no big deal. Telling her that you and Tara and her are a family that is just the same as her friend’s family is probably enough for now. Here comes the Truth: As she develops, you’ll add details to that description. But at seven years old, Hannah only needs the high points: she has two loving parents, just like her friend, and she should eat her vegetables. |  |

At 7 years old, Hannah she only needs the high points: she has two loving parents and that she should eat her vegetables.

Judge upholds Pride House ban at 2014 Olympics

S

OCHI, RUSSIA | A judge has backed a ban imposed by the Russian Ministry of Justice to prevent a “Gay Pride House” at the 2014 Winter Olympic games in Sochi. LGBT activists were hopeful for the house after the success of a similar facility at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada. The Ministry refused the registration of the group to set up and organize the house dedicated to LGBT Olympic athletes and their families. In mid-March, a court backed that decision, citing public morality as a concern. “The aims of the organization contradict the basics of public morality and the policy of the state in the area of family motherhood and childhood protection,’ said Judge Svetlana Mordovina in her ruling. “The activities of the [Pride House] movement leads to propaganda of non-traditional sexual orientation

which can undermine the security of the Russian society and the state.” Her ruling went onto state that the Pride House would “undermine the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation.” One organizer of the Pride House, Nikolai Alekseev, said that organizers were not going to let the judge’s ruling be the end of the story. He and others have reached out to the International Olympic Committee. “We still aim to host a series of actions during the Olympics, and we are in contact with the International Olympic Committee,” he told the Gay Star News. “Hopefully, a solution can be reached,” he said. Of utmost concern, according to Alekseev, is the safety of openly LGBT athletes who plan to complete in the 2014 Winter Games. The Gay Pride House is a way to combat homophobia and to offer a safe haven to LGBT athletes. That mission, however, is not viewed favorably in Russia.

“Such aims as creating an understanding of the necessity to ight against homophobia and the creation of positive attitudes towards LGBT sportsmen contradicts with the basics of public morality because they are directed towards the increase of the number of citizens of sexual minorities which breaches the understanding of good and evil, good and bad, vice and virtue,” Mordovina said. A Gay Pride House is planned for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and Chad Molleken, executive director of that facility, expects extra support for the institution after the ruling in Russia. “What is happening in Russia today makes it that much more important for everyone to get behind the Pride House London project now,” he said. “As one of the most diverse cities in the world, London has the opportunity to permanently establish Pride House as a part of the Olympic movement and line up of national houses.” |  |

an Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers endorsed Republican candidate Rick Santorum for president this month, speciically citing the former Pennsylvania Senator’s ight against same-sex marriage. Rivers made the announcement before the Republican primary in his home state of Alabama. “I am supporting Rick Santorum for President because of his stance on issues that attack vital Christian values our country was founded upon: no abortion, upholding traditional marriage, defending religious freedom, no euthanasia,” Rivers said. “Rick Santorum will also ight to create jobs and expand opportunities for all Americans. I am proud to endorse Senator Santorum and do what I can to help him secure the Republican nomination for President of the United States. According to OutSports.com, Rivers isn’t the irst Charger to ight against marriage equality. In 2008 Jacques Casaire fought for the passage of Proposition 8 in California, which took away the rights of gay couples to marry. |  |
