IT IS MY HONOR TO WELCOME YOU TO
T
his year we come together to stand United, celebrate our diversity, honor lost friends and heal as a community. This past June our city – our community – was a scene to a horrific attack, that changed each and every one of our lives. We won’t let this defeat us because our community is Orlando Strong. The very reason why you are here celebrating with us is to continue to show love and unity. I encourage you throughout our Pride Week to stand United and join us for many activities and events that our production team has planned for you. I would like to thank my Board of Directors and our production team, without whom this day of celebration would not be possible. These individuals take pride in all their hard work and countless hours to ensure we deliver a high quality and memorable event year after year. Come Out With Pride reaffirms its dedication to rejecting prejudice in our society, as well as ensuring that all LGBTQ citizens
are able to live openly – with pride. It’s important to know that our organization provides grants and scholarships to our LGBTQ+ Community through our Pride Gives Back program. I would also like to extend a gracious thank you to our many sponsors; without your commitment and generosity we would not be able to achieve our goals. To the vendors, supporting businesses, volunteer ambassadors. entertainers and local government agencies thank you for your support. Lastly, but surely not least, to all of YOU, thank you for celebrating with us. I am proud to call Orlando my home. I am grateful to have this community. WE are Orlando United, WE will prevail, WE ARE... Pride United.

I think that there are everyday acts of kindness that may not have happened if it weren’t for the Pulse incident.” He mentions the fact that local hospitals are forgiving costs for the victims and their families, that even the churches have stepped in to bring some healing, that simple acts – like the dispatch of therapists throughout Orlando for those directly and indirectly traumatized by the immense massacre – have indeed made Orlando stronger. “It also gives us an opportunity to shine the light on fighting against hatred,” he adds. Orlando Commissioner Patty Sheehan was thrust into the media glare, more so even than Dyer, because she is a member of the LGBT community and carried the weight of communicating our concerns with the world. “To be quite honest, in the first hours I was motivated by anger,” she says, “because they weren’t mentioning the LGBTQ community.” So she went everywhere she could to remind people – via the media and public appearances – that this was a crime against our community; a heinous tragedy that was being disguised almost too quickly as “terrorism.” “I didn’t want the celebrity-tragedy fame,” she says. “What I wanted to do was to use the limited media timeframe that we have to talk about the issues of this community.” And while she appreciates the tributes – the lighting up of the 30 C o m e O u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 6

Dr. Phillips Center in rainbow colors, the rainbow flags she insisted were placed throughout town, the wreaths in the City Hall rotunda – her core mission is getting to the root of the problems that led to so much bloodshed and $6.5 million in damages to businesses. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs has been a rock, she says, but politicians like Rick Scott and Marco Rubio have been far less genuine. She’s angry still, but she’s using that anger for a cause: namely, sensible gun laws. “Anger is a step of grief, and we all know that,” she says, but there are more steps to climb. “I carry that memory and those feelings of love and comfort and human kindness. There’s a lot out there.”

very year, there’s a VIP event at Lake Eola Park during the Pride festivities, and this year, consulting chef and activist Elizabeth falkner is taking the lead in hosting Taste of Pride, a food-focused event, on Oct. 8 from 6-9 p.m. “We thought it would be so cool to have lots of chefs participate from all over and from Orlando, both gay and straight, to celebrate the pride we have in this city,” says falkner, a James Beard Award nominee who rose to fame as owner of Citizen Cake (now closed), a nationally recognized pastry shop in San francisco. for Pride. We met with the organizers and I suggested that I invite some of my chef friends from all over North America to participate,” Falkner says. The impetus for organizing the event came from the shooting at Pulse Nightclub that left 49 revelers dead on June 12. “After the tragedy, Stacy and I wanted to bring people together to celebrate the amazingly warm city Orlando is,” says Falkner. “I have been by [Pulse] in the past and am so frustrated that we don’t have a better system for purchasing guns in this country. This should not have happened.” Every chef Falkner asked to 42 C o m e O u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 6

be sweets, that’s for sure), Clay Miller from new downtown French brasserie DoveCote, Rhys and Alexia Gawlak of Swine & Sons Provisions, and Art Smith from newly unveiled Southern-cuisine temple Homecoming at Disney Springs. Other chefs include Anita Lo (Annisa, New York City), Cat Cora (multiple restaurants) and Melissa Kelly (Primo in Maine and Primo at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes, Orlando). “We all have pride in Orlando and in humanity and as chefs, we’re trained to cook for all kinds of people in communities around the world,” says Falkner. For many of these chefs, being gay is part of both who they are and what they do. The professional kitchen was an accepting place where they could be themselves. Trina Gregory-Propst, owner and chef of Se7en Bites Bake Shop, sees no division between what she does and her identity as a lesbian. “For me and my wife, there is no separation. Our staff is over 75 percent gay or lesbian and we are a 100 percent lesbian-owned business. I didn’t choose to be a baker any more than I chose to be a lesbian. They are both who I am.” Tickets to Taste of Pride are $150 and include hours of noshing on creations at 17 stations from some of North America’s top culinary minds, plus a special fireworks display over Lake Eola after the event. Beverage sponsors include Boulevard Brewing Company from Kansas City, Missouri, 46 C o m e O u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 6
and Tito’s Handmade Vodka, a sponsor of the entire weekend’s celebrations. Each station will have beer, wine or a craft cocktail paired with the dish by a professional mixologist. One of the reasons Falkner took on this challenge was to show the healing properties food can have on a community. The pervasive term “comfort food” is evidence of this. “Food has a way of bringing people together, and it’s best enjoyed in groups,” says Falkner. Propst agrees. “Food is comfort,” she says. “We identify with making someone feel better or making someone happy by feeding them, whether they’re celebrating or mourning or both.” “Food shared creates camaraderie,” says Blake, “It promotes togetherness. Maybe it sounds corny, but everyone is equal at the table.” Taste of Pride won’t just be wandering from station to station scarfing, there will be a stable of entertainers for the event. The most important thing for Falkner, when curating the list of who will cook for the event, was that it was inclusive. “I think the coolest thing is that we have both gay and straight chefs coming together to celebrate Pride,” she says. “The city of Orlando has already shown its strength in pulling together, and this Pride event will be a grand way to celebrate diversity and community.” More information on the event and tickets to attend are available at comeoutwithpride.com.
