FALL THE WORLD’S

A STAGE

CENTRAL FLORIDA, TAMPA BAY SHOWCASE LOCAL AND NATIONAL ENTERTAINMENT

I

Ryan Williams-Jent

T WAS WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE IN “AS YOU LIKE IT” that declared “All the world’s a stage,” calling its inhabitants merely players with their various exits and entrances. This fall, Central Florida and Tampa Bay will be highlighting some of the nation’s and each area’s most engaging. That’s why Watermark has brought this annual guide, detailing the best in show from Sept. 2019 to January 2020. With the latter year’s presidential election already heating up, it’s important to take time and enjoy entertainment from the stage to screen, so we have you covered. As Pablo Picasso once expressed, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Within these pages, we detail scheduled performances

and exhibits from a plethora of painters, musicians and thespians who are members of or support the LGBTQ community. In doing so, we share the best that Central Florida and Tampa Bay’s venues and advertisers who do the same have to offer you. From Daytona Beach to the Space Coast, Orlando to Lakeland, Tampa to Clearwater, St. Petersburg to Sarasota and beyond, this fall has it all! We hope you enjoy Watermark’s Fall Arts Guide 2019.

SURPRISE

I

ndie-folk, rock band Rainbow Kitten Surprise, or RKS as their fans call them, originated in Boone, N.C. in 2013. Singer Sam Melo, who identifies as gay, and guitarist Darrick “Bozzy” Keller started the band while at Appalachian State University, recruiting the rest of the band —openly queer Charlie Holt (bassist), Ethan Goodpaster (guitar) and Jess Haney (drums)— from their dorm. RKS released its first full-length album “Seven” later that year and really took off in 2018 after the release of the album “How To: Friend, Love, Freefall.” The album—which fuses folk, indie rock and hip-hop—includes the emotional song “Hide.” Its six-minute, documentary-style music video dives into the lives of four drag queens in New Orleans, written by Melo when he was struggling with his own identity. After a hugely successful show at The Beacham last year, RKS returns to Orlando in September, this time at the House of Blues in Disney Springs. SEPT. 30, HOUSE OF BLUES, ORLANDO 13

KING

PRINCESS

M

ikaela Straus, better known as King Princess, is a singersongwriter from Brooklyn, New York who is going to be a huge star. Besides being able to play multiple instruments—including the guitar, bass, piano and drums—and having the voice of an angel, King Princess’ list of fans include former One Directioner Harry Styles, actress (and ex-girlfriend) Amandla Stenberg and award-winning songwriter Mark Ronson. Ronson is such a huge fan that King Princess was the first performer the seven-time Grammy winner signed to his new label, Zelig Records. Not too shabby for someone who isn’t even 21 years old yet. King Princess identifies as genderqueer and gay and wanted to express all of herself in her music. Her first single “1950” is a tribute to the LGBTQ community, to queer love and to the novel “The Price of Salt,” a 1952 lesbian romance novel that was later adapted into the 2015 film, “Carol.” The song was a huge hit, especially after Styles tweeted out lyrics from the single. King Princess followed the success of “1950” up with the singles “Talia” and “Pussy is God” before releasing her first full-length album, “Cheap Queen.” NOV. 12, THE PLAZA LIVE, ORLANDO 17

onathan Van Ness is best known as one-fifth of Netflix’s hugely popular reboot of the series “Queer Eye.” Ness manages to steal every scene he appears in and brighten everyone around him as the show’s “groomer, hair guru and self-care advocate.” But true fans of Ness know that his loud, lovable craziness didn’t get its start on “Queer Eye.” Ness started to develop his rabid fan base as the star of Funny or Die’s online series “Gay of Thrones.” Each week Ness would critique, analyze and make audiences laugh out loud as he recapped episodes of HBO’s hit shoe “Game of Thrones.” And if that isn’t enough, Ness also has a hysterical biweekly podcast called “Getting Curious” in which he explores all things that he is curious about, as well as he will release his memoir “Over The Top” this fall. Ness is now taking on the world of stand-up comedy with his tour “Road to Beijing” which is coming the the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando this holiday season.

Randy Rainbow

Live!

T

he internet’s satirical superstar Randy Rainbow, who swears that’s his real name, is well known for his work as an actor, comedian, singer and writer. He’s been featured on VH1’s “Best Week Ever,” written material for fellow comics like Kathy Griffin and regularly goes viral, garnering millions of views across all forms of social media for his political spoofs and song parodies. Some of Rainbow’s hits include “Suckers,” in which he parodies the Jonas Brothers’ hit of the same name to detail Donald Trump’s supporters; “Just Impeach Him,” in which he borrows the tune of Ariana Grande’s “breathin” to compel Congress to tackle Trump’s presidency and “Cruella DeVos,” in which he likens U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to “101 Dalmatians” villain Cruella de Vil. The comedian’s hard work and wit has paid off. In 2019, the openly LGBTQ comedian was nominated for an “Outstanding Short Form Variety Series” Emmy for “The Randy Rainbow Show” and continues to sell out his live shows across the country. Be sure to subscribe to a seat at The Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg this October to like and follow the funny man’s latest material. OCT. 19, MAHAFFEY THEATER, ST. PETERSBURG

Julie

Andrews

D

ame Julie Andrews is a legend; an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Grammy and Emmy winner that has entertained and inspired millions. From subscribing a spoonful of sugar as “Mary Poppins” to sharing a few of her favorite things in “The Sound of Music” and redefining royalty in “The Princess Diaries,” she’s brought dignity and grace to the screen and stage for decades. Now, she’s coming to one near you. In “An Evening of Conversation with Julie Andrews,” the star details her experiences from her early days of vaudeville to the projects she continues to create today. That includes Netflix’s “Julie’s Greenroom,” a children’s show featuring a nonbinary puppet created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The puppet’s inclusion was championed by Andrews, who has “just always” been an LGBTQ ally. “We tried to be as inclusive as we possibly could,” she explained ahead of its premiere. “I don’t think there’s been a time when I haven’t been an ally.” The show was co-created by daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, who will facilitate audience questions during Andrews’ stops in Clearwater and Sarasota. While the beloved icon won’t be singing, Andrews will be sharing exactly what makes her so Supercalifragilisticexpialidicious. ear, far, wherever you are— you’ll want to head to Tampa for Celine Dion’s “Courage World Tour.” It’s the Grammy Award winner’s first U.S. outing in more than a decade after her extensive Las Vegas residency. The tour shares a name with the pop icon’s 12th English language studio album, named in honor of returning to the stage after the death of her husband and manager Rene Angelil. Dion announced the album and tour this year surrounded by some of Vegas’ other divas, “Tina,” “Diana” and “Barbara” drag queens. If there’s one thing Dion knows, it’s the power of love. According to the superstar, it was also the support of her gay best friend and backup dancer that helped lead Dion to a brand new day. “I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by so many beautiful people from the LGBTQ community throughout my entire career,” she’s said, “from talented performers, musicians, producers and songwriters, to colleagues who have contributed significantly to my success— and last but not least—to so many of my loyal fans who have stood by me.” That’s just the way it is for the singer, whose love could move mountains if you asked her to.
