and the temperatures are cooling— at least a little. That means area arts venues are gearing up for their busiest time of year and offering a full plate of Broadwaystyle entertainment, music groups and special exhibitions throughout Florida. features on popular acts that have a speciic draw to the LGBT community, whether in music, comedy or theater. This year it seems the touring celebrities and performances are bigger and better than before, so highlighting every single one is impossible in this guide. However, we do offer up a few “Don’t Miss...” options throughout the expanded listings, just to make sure you don’t overlook some of the bigger names or must-see productions. The listings on the following pages are by no means complete. We

And, of course, there is no shortage of mainstream acts or LGBT-speciic offerings from coast-to-coast in the Sunshine State As is tradition, Watermark has scoured the websites of venues and groups throughout our readership areas, reached out to speciic museums, theater groups and concert halls and selected the shows and performances that are of special interest to our LGBT readership. We also return a popular aspect of these bi-annual guides (one in Spring, one in Fall), the

Erasure
S
ometimes you can take talent for granted when it’s right in your own backyard. And that’s exactly where Erasure is these days, now that Andy Bell lives in Tampa.
Bell, often considered the first openly gay pop star, teamed with group founder Vince Clarke in 1985 and the pair have churned out synth-based dance songs ever since. Their stardom has ebbed and flowed over the years, but one thing is for sure—they have reached cult band status with a group of loyal followers that keep them touring and returning to the studio. Clarke formed Erasure after a successful tenure with Depeche Mode on one album. When he decided to form a new group, he advertised for a vocalist in a British newspaper catering to the music community—Bell was one of more than 40 to mail in a demo tape. Erasure’s 2014 tour is directly tied to the release of a brand new album, The Violet Flame, which is available Sept. 23. No doubt the band will play their classic hits alongside some of their newest material when they visit Orlando’s House of Blues on Sept. 13 and St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theatre the following night on Sept. 14.

hen The Book of Mormon came through Florida in 2013, actual Mormon elders were spotted outside the theater handing out literature explaining their religion.
18
They had a captive crowd since almost every performance sold out in Orlando and Tampa! Now, the show is back and stopping at the new Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center Dec. 26-Jan. 4 in Orlando and returning to the Straz Center in Tampa Jan. 20-Feb. 1 After spending seven years in development, The Book of Mormon opened on Broadway in 2011 to rave reviews. The religious satire musical was born of the minds of South Park creators Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez. The tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda, where they must spread their gospel in a war torn land. This musical is not for the easily offended does not shy away from blasphemy—it makes it the main target. Florida pushed hard for this show’s return based on last year’s success. No doubt it will be hard to find empty seats again in 2014/15.

ove his humor or hate his honesty, Bill Maher is a friend of the LGBT community.
The comedian-turned-talk-show-host has been on television for nearly two decades sharing his observations on politics, celebrities, news stories and, of course, religion. His 23 Emmy nominations have made him as popular among critics as among his fans and his HBO show Real Time is entering into its seventh year. His former show, Politically Incorrect, launched him into super-stardom and his 2008 documentary, Religulous has gone on to become the seventh highestgrossing documentary ever. Today, 35 years after he started as a stand-up comedian, the star still performs at least 50 live dates a year across the country and he’ll bring his mix of comedy and honesty—would that be ‘comesty?’—to Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall on Oct. 25 and Sarasota’s Van Wezel Oct. 26. Real Time with Bill Maher airs every Friday at 10 p.m. on HBO with a replay at 11. Expect some ad-libbing during his live performances. No doubt a crowd of LGBTs and allies will be among the very liberal audience that will surely sell out both auditoriums. Get your tickets early.

DON’T MISS... Wanda Sykes
C
omedian Wanda Sykes is a household name now, thanks to a slew of movie roles alongside celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Steve Carell and smash-hit stand-up specials.
But she gained a special place in LGBT history in 2008 when, while speaking at a rally to defeat Proposition 8 banning marriage equality, she came out publicly for the first time. Since then, she has talked freely about being an African-American lesbian married to a white woman and the joys and challenges of raising children. Last year she made a return to HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm starring opposite Larry David. Sykes was previously seen on several television shows over the past two years. Her Own special Herlarious which aired in July highlighted female comics. In 2010, Sykes won a GLAAD award for promoting a good image for equal rights for gays and lesbians and has won four Emmy Awards—one for her writing and three others for her work on Inside the NFL. She also received the American Comedy Award for “Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic” in 2001. Expect a crowd packed full of LGBTs and allies when she makes her visit to the Van Wezel in Sarasota this fall.
