FALLING UP Florida gears up for autumn with a huge selection of arts and entertainment offerings

HILE WE MAY STILL BE DROWNING IN THE
historic loods and the expected thunder grumbles of Florida’s waning tropical summer outbursts, just around the corner there’s a sort of panacea of open windows and smiling faces awaiting their deserved reprieve. from the grassroots to the stadiums, from the head to the toe. We’ve done our best to reach out to all of the entertaining folks in our digital Rolodexes for information on the most wonderful distractions that are going to be offered from coast to coast. Certainly, there will be some things that don’t it in this grocery bag of amazingness, but, by our own humble standards, we think there’s a fair job of sticking our wet ingers into the breeze in order to ind the things that you need to see and places you ought to be seen. You want Janet Jackson? You’ve got Janet Jackson. But you also have a veritable cornucopia of music, art, theater and anything else that renders your fancy tickled. This is Florida’s waistband; we’re not short on aesthetic diversions. So please join us as we celebrate our state, our culture, our LGBT heritage and our future of equality. The arts brought us this far, after all. And where they’ll take us next is the most exciting part of the movement. Get out there! Do stuff!

WATERMARK’S FALL ARTS GUIDE 2015
Sure, we may not ind that elusive whipping wind full of yellowing leaves smashing against our faces as we walk in the humidity of Floridian bedsit humility, but we do have so much to be excited about. That’s why we’re bubbling over with anticipation about the coming autumnal salvation, especially in the realm of glorious things that make us leave the house. As always, Watermark is geared up for the excitement and engagement that a new fall season brings, and, in our own way, we’re just itching to share it all with you. It’s time for our annual Fall Arts Guide, and with that comes that peculiar something-to-look-forwardto feeling that powers us through the dullest of quagmires and workaday task-mastering. We have things to do! It’s been a crazy year for the entire region—as it should be for a region that is rife with rollercoasters and trafic jams—and there are some great rewards awaiting in the nearest of futures: events from venues and groups that stretch

Janet Jackson
T
HE FACT REMAINS THAT IF YOU EVEN CONSIDER MISSING “MISS JACKSON IF YOU’RE NASTY” when she makes her latest victory lap through Florida, legendary celebrity in tow, she will not “Miss You Much,” because, “like a moth to the flame,” etc. We’ll stop our punning of the amazing Janet Jackson’s oeuvre just so long as you realize that she is still a force to be reckoned with. Jackson is on a magnificent rebound with her “Unbreakable” tour, as well she should be. Despite some diminishing returns in the squints of peripheral pop-music’s requisite myopia and all the ageism that comes with it, Jackson remains a force to be reckoned with, and from what we hear, her shows are not disappointing anyone. Expect nods to the costumed militarism of her Rhythm Nation peak, as well as peeks at the future for Janet, including her current chart burner, “No Sleep.” What have you done for her lately?

N THAT STRANGE STRATOSPHERE OF INSULAR SINGERSONGWRITER TYPES WHO BASICALLY TAKE OVER THE WHOLE WORLD with sideways glances, Sufjan Stevens runs the table. He’s constantly shadowed by his Christian affectations—Stevens sings of shadows beneath crosses, metaphorically—but his true strength is in his uniqueness (also, he doesn’t cling to the contemporary Christian ethos of upbeat ballads). So far, Stevens has released one hundred Christmas songs over two cd sets. His latest folk diary - Carrie and Lowell— concerns his mentally ill mom and his steadfast stepfather. Stevens’ songs speak to a generation of drinkers and the spawn of mentally challenged relatives. “Fuck me, I’m falling apart,” he sings in “No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross,” as if Elliot Smith is right there in the room. This should be a phenomenal show, sideways glances alight.

Billy Idol
HE FIRST TIME WE SAW BILLY IDOL LIVE, HE CLIMBED OUT OF A GIANT PAIR OF HYDRAULIC LADY LEGS with a Whiplash Smile and wowed us into that peculiar ‘80s aggression and excitement place that made things like “Rebel Yell” seem relevant. More. More. More. In truth, Idol’s shtick has aged perfectly with the odd sort of humility that comes along with cameos in films like the Wedding Singer and a Christmas album. Yes, there is a Billy Idol Christmas album. These days, Idol has reunited with hair-god Steve Stevens for another run through eyes without faces and everything else that screams “Don’t Stop!” We couldn’t be happier. Last year, the former Generation X bleach-maker released a new record, Kings & Queens of the Underground, but that’s not necessarily what people are showing up for. Peroxide and popprowess have served Mr. William Broad well, so he’ll be donning eyes without faces and shocks to the system as well as any pop star has the right to.

CHVRCHES
WATERMARK’S FALL ARTS GUIDE 2015

T’S A MISTAKE TO ASSUME THAT SCOTTISH NEWCOMERS CHVRCHES ARE JUST A COCTEAU TWINS REDUX, one that is hinged on the otherworldly wisps through the willows of singer Lauren Mayberry’s lyrical mind and manners. Chvrches have already proven themselves to be tastemaker favorites via high-profile singles like “The Mother we Share” and “Recover,” from their debut album, The Bones of What You Believe. And now that everyone knows where the band is coming from, the trio is soaring into sophomore album territory, with two tracks already littering the internet. It’s fair to say that they sound exactly as you want them to. “Leave a Trace” and “Never Ending Circles” hint at a continuation of their signature style, but also hit a little closer to the bone. Their new record, Every Open Eye, for which this tour is necessary, promises some surprises, but also a lot of reassured angst set against the beautiful sonic flowers that made them blossom out of nowhere.

Breakfast Club anniversary featuring
Molly
Ringwald
S
O, LET’S SAY IT WAS THE EARLY ‘80S AND YOU HAD UNIQUE TALENTS like putting your lipstick on via the sheer power of your cleavage, what would you do in 2015? Would you hope to make an elephant lamp work by just pulling the trunk string? Would you tape some guy’s ass cheeks together? Would you break the door to the library and then crawl through the headspace only to fall down? These were the issues that troubled us most in the ‘80s, and the Breakfast Club was there to serve up the lessons. If you’re young, shut up, because the 30th anniversary of the seminal ‘80s suburban angst film the Breakfast Club is actually a big deal. Seriously, what film did more for guidance counselors in 1984 than this one did? Rather excitingly, the elusive Molly Ringwald is going to be in town to celebrate 30 years of ranting and raving about being popular and having sex for a random diamond earring. Be there or be square.
