n this silver anniversary of Gay Day, we present Watermark’s Guide to Orlando’s Big Gay Weekend 2015, a complete schedule as possible at press time. We’ve scoured the web, contacted the promoters, called the clubs, and assembled the most up-to-date all-encompassing listings. Most groups have a host hotel, complete with ticket and information booths. Those are listed on page 11. Be sure to check in advance as clubs typically raise cover charges for the first weekend of June. And not that we’d perpetuate stereotypes, but no one does shopping quite like the LGBT community. That’s probably what makes the numerous Expos at the various host hotels so popular. Expos run throughout the weekend at the Doubletree by Hilton Orlando at Seaworld, B Resort & Spa, the Holiday Inn Lake Buena Vista Downtown, the Sheraton Lake Buena Vista Resort and the Parliament House Courtyard. Sure, there’s shopping for physical products: T’s, tanks, and trunks with an

endless supply of pithy catchphrases and innuendos; skin-care, hair-care and mouthcare “essentials” that you never knew you cared about; and rainbow-festooned…well, everything. Expo planners know that you can’t spell “homosexual” without S-E-X, so there’s plenty of adult products to be had as well. In fact, the GayDayS group has added their own “Fifty Shades of Gay”-themed BDSM demonstration room to their line-up. Still, it’s more than a material world. There’s also shopping for the soul. You can learn about the latest challenges facing the LGBT community’s fight for equality, discover a nonprofit organization that will benefit from your support and, in some cases, take part in health screenings, tests, and vaccinations. Think of it as a mini-mall for merchandise and the mind! Orlando’s Big Gay Weekend is here and we’re thrilled to be your guide. Have fun, make friends and don’t forget to be safe. The original mass gathering of LGBTs in a theme park, Gay Day at the Magic Kingdom, has spawned similar outings at amusement parks across the globe. Though there’s little “official” about this very unofficial outing, there are some traditions that have carried on year after year:

Gay and lesbian youth groups have been known to meet here.

12 p.m. // Pre-parade Cocktail Break Outer Rim Lounge, Contemporary Resort

Sometimes you need a coolingoff cocktail, and since none can be had inside the Magic Kingdom, this is the place to go.

Show up early at the Main Street Railroad station for a full round-trip view of the park.

The ursine set traditionally meets at the Frontier Land show.

GAY DAY TRADITIONS ABOUND IN THE MAGIC KINGDOM THE FIRST SATURDAY OF JUNE

his year marks 25 years of LGBTs descending upon Orlando for fun in the sun and in the parks. And though 25th anniversaries are typically marked in silver, red has long been the color of choice for Gay Day at the Magic Kingdom, which is June 6 this year. And while the majority of people do wear red, it’s not uncommon to see rainbows, pride-shirts and the ubiquitous group of muscle bears—typically from Fort Lauderdale—wearing T-shirt with their creative re-naming of the Seven Dwarfs. When Gay Day originally launched, Universal Orlando was just a single theme park opened barely a year, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics collapsed into 15 sovereign republics that year and L.A. Lakers point guard Magic Johnson announced he had HIV, effectively ending his NBA career. Also born that year: British singer

Ed Sheeran, and actresses Emma Roberts and Shailene Woodley. We’ve come a long way as a community since those early days. Marriage equality has arrived in Florida and will hopefully be the law of the country by mid-summer. Gay Days isn’t a Pride event—we have Come Out With Pride for that—but it is a familiar gathering of LGBTs from around the world. Traditions are heavy with this day and for many different groups. . (A full list of traditions is on page 17).Youth meet at 11 a.m. by Cinderella’s castle and lesbians take a train ride at 1 p.m. Bears woof at each other at the same time outside Country Bear Jamboree while leather folk cool off in Pirates of the Caribbean.
