Y
ou’ve spent weeks searching for that one perfect gift for your partner, family member, BFF or new boyfriend or girlfriend. You know he or she will love it but you want to make sure that not only the gift within the box is remembered, but the way you delivered it is as well. After all, it’s the memories we make during the holidays that make this time of year so incredibly special. Here are a few suggestions for ensuring the holiday hoopla is about more than crinkled wrapping paper, large boxes or busy schedules. 1) Scavenger Hunt. Creating a scavenger hunt takes a little planning but it results in a memory that lasts forever. The number of stops on the hunt is up to you, but consider using romantic locations with specific meaning (where you first met, your first date) to place clues. The clues can be written in clever rhyme, but don’t feel like that’s a requirement if you’re not the literary type. Wrapping the clues individually will give a sense of more to your gift recipient and will not only make your special person smile, but those witnessing the hunt will smile, too! Hint: Don’t send the recipient off on his or her own, make sure you tag along and experience the fun first-hand! Also, have a “master” list of locations with you in case a clue is unexpectedly absent.
2) Special Delivery. Face it, everyone “expects” a gift on the holidays, but you can add some surprise if you deliver it off-schedule. Consider beating your significant other to work one morning and awaiting his or her arrival at their desk with the gift plainly in site in front of you. If that’s not possible, encounter the recipient during regular errands—meet them in the produce aisle of your favorite grocer or plant a gift in their car where you know they’ll see it. Hint: If you are planning on a surprise at work, make sure you get the all-clear from the boss or supervisor. You don’t want this memory to end at the unemployment line.
3) Deceiving Appearance: Many gifts look exactly the same in wrapping paper as they do out of it. If the recipient asked for a specific DVD or CD, for example, there is little anticipation in ripping off the camouflage. Befuddle him or her by creatively wrapping your gift in either a larger box or with an object that is not the actual gift. For example, if the gift is small enough, wrap it with an item around your home like a baseball bat or even a box of cereal. The laughs are guaranteed when they investigate the gift with a shake or two, only to hear Cap’n Crunch moving around inside! Hint: If you use a more expensive item as the companion piece to this trick, make sure it’s obvious that said item is not the actual present, or you’ll be out extra cash replacing it later.
