in O-town O

rlando is now irmly established as a major destination for gay and lesbian visitors. In fact, Central Florida now regularly ranks in “top ten” in the number of gay visitors. Orlando offers many alternatives to LGBT travelers— popular gay events, a growing live music and fun club scene, arts, concerts and ilm festivals—and of course the theme scene, parks. There are charming neighborhood districts and a vibrant downtown as well as the country’s second largest number of hotel rooms. You can travel to Orlando year after year and never run out of different memorable experiences.

In the last three years, The Advocate has included Orlando in its top five list of the "Gayest Cities in America". It mentions the obvious places such as Chelsea, West Hollywood, Boystown and Provincetown with their long histories of gay culture and safe havens. What is wonderful about the list, especially in the case of Orlando, is honoring "the per capita queerness of some less expected locales." 2013 - 2014 O R L A N D O G AY A N D L E S B I A N T R AV E L G U I D E

he reason Orlando continues to be the #1 vacation destination is the attractions. Of the top ten most visited theme parks in the country, six are here. Of the top ten of any attractions in the US, two are here. The best known is Walt Disney World® Resort, located in Lake Buena Vista about 20 miles southwest of Orlando via Interstate 4. The Disney experience encompasses six distinct parks—Magic Kingdom® Park; Epcot®; Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park; Disney’s Hollywood Studios®; Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. Other world renowned area attractions include Universal Orlando® Resort and SeaWorld Parks and Resorts®. Like the other parks, Universal includes Universal Studios Florida® Theme Park and Universal’s Islands of Adventure® Theme Park (where you can experience The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™). SeaWorld includes SeaWorld® Orlando and adjacent Aquatica SeaWorld’s Waterpark and Discovery Cove. 2013 - 2014 O R L A N D O G AY A N D L E S B I A N T R AV E L G U I D E

EXCITEMENT! The theme park capitol of the world.

“The heart and soul of Orlando and its raison d’être are the giant, world-renowned theme parks punctuating the region. That’s why you probably came here with your family as a kid, and they’re an equally valid reason for a visit as an adult. Water parks and roller coasters, entertainment from corny to cool, a surprisingly authentic global experience and brilliant flashes of cutting-edge technology wow even the most jaded queens.” —ManAboutWorld, 2012

“Orlando stands out, especially for lesbians with kids. The massive Epcot theme park requires an entire day to experience, if not more, and adult foodies will appreciate the authentic International Food and Wine Festival held there in the fall. The Magic Kingdom will thrill the little ones, but if you have teens and tweens, Universal Orlando is a must do, if only for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (which will delight even the most jaded adult). If you are here in October and your kids are old enough to handle some Halloween horror, Pride at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios is a real scream and not for the faint of heart.” —Curve Magazine, April 2013 2013 - 2014 O R L A N D O G AY A N D L E S B I A N T R AV E L G U I D E

f your time is not spent at the theme parks during the day (almost every visitor spends some time at their favorite) there’s a ton of other things to do, explore or experience. From some of the top department stores including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales to one of the largest outlet locations in the southeast, Orlando shopping has something for every taste and budget. Outdoor activities, including gay amateur sports, hot air ballooning and eco-tours, abound. And don’t forget Central Florida is a mecca for golfers with over 170 courses and over 20 golf academies.

There are many less known areas, each with their own individual vibe and charm. Lake Eola Park, with its massive signature fountain, is downtown and a great place to stroll

and shop. Don’t miss the adjacent Thornton Park with its restaurants with outside seating for great people watching. Lake Ivanhoe is home for antique shops. Loch

“Orlando is home to a large international LGBT population base — many of whom work in the hospitality industry. (Read: Orlando is a gay magnet for those in the service and hospitality industries.) Orlando restaurants. Winter Park, Mount Dora, Kissimmee each offers an eclectic mix of shops and dining alternatives. And a short drive to the east are coastal beaches, most notably Cocoa, New Smyrna and Daytona. Beach driving and parking directly adjacent the Atlantic is a tradition that has been preserved to the present day. So pack your lotion and cooler for a relaxing day in the sun. Want other ideas? Consider:

Nature parks are as abundant in Orlando as thrill rides. If viewing wildlife, hiking or bicycling is your thing, consider visiting Jay Blanchard Park Trails, Wekiva Springs State Park or Little Big Econ State Forest. You have dozens of other great alternatives to consider too. Finding a place to work out is easy. Most major hotels and resorts have exercise facilities often available to non-guests for a

fee. The Gym Downtown is a huge new retro gym that is open 24 hours a day. Club Orlando also has a popular full range gym. Orlando has 20 destination spas— something you wouldn’t expect in the epicenter of theme parks. Many are world class. Make some time to pamper yourself. Check out the Kennedy Space Center which is only 45 minutes from Orlando. Spend several hours touring launch areas, seeing giant rockets or “training” in spacelight simulators.

Several lavish mainstream shows operate daily in the tourist district. Downtown Disney® and Universal’s CityWalk are also fun destinations to shop, hear music and dine. Couple leisurely dines at one of Orlando’s many street-side cafes.

Dining is chock full of theaters and performance venues including the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival, Orlando Repertory Theatre, Mad Cow Theatre, Theatre Downtown, The Osceola Center for the Arts, Winter Park Playhouse, Theatre Winter Haven, and Seaside Music Theatre. In addition, the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center brings national tours through town on a regular basis. Each spring, local theatres and downtown venues play host to the Orlando International Fringe Festival, which draws touring companies from all around the world, as well as readings and fully staged productions of new and unknown plays by local artists.

“Discussion of Orlando cuisine sometimes focuses on the plethora of chain restaurants. With more than 56 million visitors to feed every year, they are a vital alternative. But Central Florida is also home to a diverse and vibrant culinary scene filled with talented chefs and independently owned restaurants. Think every cuisine: French, Italian, Cuban, German, Mexican/Latin, Asian and Middle Eastern. You’ll find them in the neighborhoods of Thornton Park and College Park, or along Park Avenue in Winter Park. There are some delightful gay-owned and oriented eateries too. As a LGBT visitor, you’ll find these establishments to be welcoming, comfortable places to dine where everyone shares a common love for good food.” —Noted Food Critic Scott Joseph www.ScottJosephOrlando.com
