Watermrak’s Spring Arts Guide 2013

S

12

HE’S CRASS, SHE’S NOT AFRAID TO DROP THE F-BOMB and she continues to be a huge supporter of the LGBT community. Lisa Lampanelli has made a career out of being mean on stage, and her Florida audiences laugh hysterically every time she rolls through the Sunshine State. This equal opportunity offender is a regular on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Howard Stern’s Sirius satellite radio shows. She’s also had appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Chelsea Lately. In 2012, she was a top contender on The Celebrity Apprentice and she managed to raise $100,000 for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis when she finished fourth on the NBC reality show—and it’s not the first time she’s raised a ton of money for the gay-specific cause. In May 2011, one of Lampanelli’s concerts was targeted by the Westboro Baptist Church. In true Lampanelli fashion, she offered to donate $1,000 per each church member that showed up to an LGBT charity. By the time it was all said and done, she wrote a check to the Gay Men’s Health Crisis for $50,000. She is also known for her many appearances on Comedy Central’s celebrity roasts. Expect to be offended while you’re laughing when she stops by Melbourne later this spring. MAR. 29, KING CENTER, MELBOURNE

WICKED

HE WITCHES OF OZ ARE BACK WITH ANOTHER TOUR STOP OF WICKED THIS SPRING when they fly into the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre Feb. 20-March 10. The Broadway smash tells the story of Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West and their relationship before that annoying girl from Kansas landed in Munchkinland. The roles originated by Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel have taken on lives of their own, and are played by Jeanna de Waal and Christine Dwyer, respectively, on this tour. The musical phenomenon has broken box office records on Broadway and its touring counterpart has done the same. The musical is the winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards. It’s also a favorite among LGBTs, since the story discusses misperceptions and how a majority of people deal with things they don’t quite understand. The fantasy/comedy tells us what true friendship means, and that misconceptions affect even the most iconic of characters. Every time the witches of Oz stop by, you can expect a theater full of our LGBT friends and neighbors. If you’ve never seen it before, don’t miss your chance to learn a little bit more about what you thought was a familiar story. FEB. 20-MAR. 10, BOB CARR, ORLANDO

MAROON 5

T

HE POPULARITY OF MAROON 5 HAS SKYROCKETED, thanks to the band’s ongoing release of hit after hit and the multimedia exposure of lead singer Adam Levine. The front man has made legions of fans in his role as a mentor on NBC’s The Voice and for his dramatic turn in the second season of American Horror Story. But despite those side projects, he remains dedicated to the music of the band that includes Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick. Levine and the band have also become voices for equality. The group supports marriage equality and Levine has often shared his belief that inequality is one of the more important issues our government must tackle. So expect to see a ton of LGBT fans cheering in the Amway Arena when the group arrives there in March, and expect to see the gay men and straight women swooning when Levine loses his shirt at some point during the performance. Since releasing their fifth studio album, Overexposed, last summer, Maroon 5 has become a staple on playlists in clubs and gyms across the country. “Moves Like Jagger” and “Payphone” continue to play on pop radio and more singles from that album are expected to play on our car stereos in the near future. LADY GAGA

I

F THERE WAS EVER AN LGBT ICON THAT HAS REACHED SUPERSTAR STATUS, IT WOULD BE LADY GAGA. The performer with a knack for outlandish outfits and amazing theatrical stage performances was thrust into stardom in a major way with the help of her many gay fans. Her first two hits, “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” helped make Lady Gaga the first artist in the digital era to top the 5 million sales mark. Her success continued with the wildly popular Born This Way album, which lured in even more fans. It’s no secret that Lady Gaga supports the LGBT community. She constantly donates to equality causes and her title track from her Born This Way album was a not-sosecret nod to the LGBT community’s support of her career. Now she’s following up on her success with another tour, which brings her to the Tampa Bay Times Forum on March. 13. Expect this show to be sold out and swarms of fans from all walks of life singing along with every single hit she belts from the stage. This is a huge concert, so if you want to go, get those tickets early! MAR. 13, TAMPA BAY TIMES FORUM, TAMPA

MATTHEW WITH A ‘Z’

AMPA BAY’S FAVORITE ACTOR/ COMEDIAN, MATTHEW MCGEE, BRINGS HIS LATEST ONE-MAN SHOW, Matthew with a Z, a tribute to Liza, Paula Dean and more, to the Capitol Theatre in downtown Clearwater’s Cleveland Street District on March 2. Tampa Bay audiences will recognize Matthew from his acclaimed performances at freeFall Theatre Company, American Stage Theatre Company, The Show Palace Dinner Theatre, Suncoast Aids Theatre Project (SATP) and St. Pete Opera Company. For years, McGee has made the arts community of Tampa Bay laugh—usually while wearing a dress. His comedic timing and sense of humor have continuously brought him roles throughout the area and a growing number of fans. This production will give the audience some background explaining the mind behind the actor. In Matthew with a Z, McGee shares his story of growing up the son of a southern veterinarian father and a beauty queen mother and Liza Minnelli playing on the radio and record player. The comedy incorporates plenty of music, with the help of Michael Raabe, and those who saw McGee’s turn as Dr. Frank ‘n’ Furter in American Stage’s Rocky Horror Show last season know he has the music and comedy chops to pull off this one-man show—again. QUEEN LATIFAH

UEEN LATIFAH’S CAREER HAS RUN THE GAMUT FROM RAPPING, SINGING, ACTING AND TALKSHOW HOST. And through it all, one thing has remained the same—her strong support for the LGBT community. Born Dana Owens, Queen Latifah hit mainstream success with her portrayal as Matron “Mama” Morton in the Academy Award-winning film Chicago. She has since performed in movies with Steve Martin and Dolly Parton. While her acting career shows no signs of slowing, The Grammy-award winner is returning to her musical roots this spring with a tour that stops in Sarasota and Clearwater. There will no doubt be renditions of her early work as well as her memorable versions of the songs she belted in Chicago and Hairspray, in which she starred alongside John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer. It has long been rumored that Queen Latifah was part of the LGBT community, and many thought she had come out during a Pride event last summer, which she denies. Whatever her orientation, her commitment to LGBT equality continues and with her Broadway style performances, her LGBT fan base continues to grow.
