SPRING FORWARD! I
f ever there were a time for staring at the sun and spinning in circles so fast that you get dizzy, thereby forgetting about the gloom and doom of our present news cycle, it’s now. Nothing beats Florida in the spring, especially when we’re riding the I-4 corridor to whatever pleasurable distraction known to man (and woman!). Each year, Watermark does its typing-fingers best to make certain that you’re aware of just what kind of events are out there to tickle your individual fancies. This year is no different. We’re just giving you the map to make it happen. Within this guide, you’ll find variations on all sorts of entertainment. If you’re into music, we’ve got your back. If you prefer scripted theater shows, look no further. Even if you like to secretly engage in sports crushes, there are plenty of thrown, kicked and bouncing balls included herein. We won’t tell anyone. But probably the most rewarding thing about pulling together the Spring Arts Guide annually is watching the
WATERMARK’S SPRING ARTS GUIDE 2017
Think of it as a little bit of fire under your posterior to get out of the house and soak it all in the way that you should. Also, think of it as something to keep around for those nights when you’re lounging on the couch and feeling a little too lazy or existential for your own good. “But, oh, there’s nothing to do!” your inner voices might be moaning. Clearly, as you press your thumbs through these pages, you’ll realize that there is plenty of fantastic distraction to be had.
seeds of that one Florida winter week blossom into diverse gardens of opportunity. There is so much to look forward to in these pages, things you probably didn’t even know were rushing down the aesthetic highway and into your backyard. Central Florida and Tampa Bay, Space Coast to Sarasota, head to heart, we don’t have it so bad down here in Florida. The opposite, actually; you’re certainly not shoveling snow, now, are you. Please be aware that change is inevitable, so we’ve provided the websites for each of the presenting venues or groups. We can’t predict the future, though we can write about it. So take a load off, plan your sunny path and let’s do this spring like never —Billy Manes before.

HERE AREN’T MANY SHOES THAT ALAN CUMMING HASN’T FILLED: those with high heels and those without. Any attempts to summarize his entertainment career – writer, singer, actor, activist, cloud, horse, volcano – are superfluous, as Cumming’s story arc is that of one man who does everything. Most Americans will remember him from his “Time after Time” three-way prom dance in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, while those with darker sensibilities might recall his take as Jennifer Jason Leigh’s ecstasy foil in the somewhat sinister (but strikingly delightful) The Anniversary Party. He also won a Tony for his makeover of the emcee role in Cabaret. For this performance, Cumming will be reviving his Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs show which won huge acclaim last year. Cumming, who is remarkably raw and inspiring in his vocal range, isn’t throwing a pity party with “Sappy Songs,” but reinterpreting them as we all do in mixtape form as we soundtrack our lives in our own heads. With a sparse set that includes piano, cello and drums, Cumming throws his mood swing into overdrive, pulling in songs from Billy Joel, Annie Lennox and Rufus Wainwright to name just a few. A self-described bisexual – he is currently married to Grant Shaffer, a graphic artist in Manhattan – Cumming is the prototype for the modern Renaissance man. His tireless work for the advancement of LGBTQ rights only makes us love him more, as do his humanism and humanitarian works. We will not be missing this show. You shouldn’t either. —Billy Manes

BRYAN FERRY
INCE 1971, BRYAN FERRY HAS BEEN A DEFINING FORCE on the fashionable end of the pop/rock spectrum, throwing style upon to the riffs of glam in the ‘70s with Roxy Music and carrying those suits and that swagger into a lucrative solo career ever since. If you don’t own Roxy Music’s (real) closing salvo Avalon, then your music collection is incomplete. That is a fact. And if “Virginia Plain” doesn’t ring a glam-rock bell, rush thyself to Spotify or iTunes. Oh, and also, thanks Roxy Music for giving us the genius of studio wonk Brian Eno, who went on to create the soundscapes of thinkingpeople’s rock in the ensuing decades. No spring chicken – Ferry is now 71 – the louche lover whose voice wraps you in a warm blanket hasn’t faded in the least. He’s been proclaimed the “icon of cool” by the Chicago Tribune, and most recently released the critically acclaimed Avanmore album, for which he’s been touring the world for the last two years. Though you can expect to hear many of the hits that put you in platform heels decades ago – or in white suits and foppish hairstyles helping you to absorb your Duran Duran pedigree – Ferry is expected to be playing hits both old and new. Going by recent setlists, “Slave to Love” will appear early, so you should, too. —Billy Manes

Sure, “Pride (In the Name of Love)” brought them some MTV exposure, but it wasn’t until the undeniable textures, production and poetry of The Joshua Tree that U2 became, effectively, the biggest band in the world. “With or Without You” built itself from a skulking ballad into a stadium anthem via the signature jangle of the Edge’s guitar and Bono’s almost-too-indulgent upper registers of gospel-like wailing. And the hits kept on coming, “Where the Streets Have No Name,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” among them. There is virtually nobody in the world who does not know these songs. Part of the reason for that is that U2 took their show to stadiums worldwide, including shows down here in Florida. We attended one of those up close in Miami at the time and were transformed. Seriously. “Certainly looking back on playing the tour at the time, it should have been an extraordinarily freeing, joyful opportunity,” bassist Adam Clayton told Rolling Stone recently. “But it was actually quite a tough time trying to deliver those songs under the pressure of growing from an arena act to a stadium act. I, for one, don’t remember enjoying it very much.” Now U2 – and you, too – have a chance at revisiting the masterpiece that shaped a post-Live Aid generation. —Billy Manes

K, SO THERE MAY BE NO SOFTER MUSICAL CARPETING THAT OF THE DULCET TONES AND HEARTFELT HARMONIES of Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock of Air Supply. And though it may be easy to laugh off their multimillions of record sales in their late-‘70s, early ‘80s heyday as a fluke lovingly attached to your single mother’s nights staying in and dreaming of somebody caring about her, that’s really not fair. “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love” and “The One That You Love” may have carried the “love” theme to its apex for the Australian duo born out of theater in 1975, but they’re all still pretty timeless bits of yacht rock suitable for both karaoke and quiet nights. They also all approached the top of the Billboard charts. But if you want the best Air Supply – and we’re not talking oxygen, here – “Making Love Out of Nothing At All,” which was written by Meatloaf’s sidekick (and, really, creator) Jim Steinman, is just about the best bombast hit ever (if you don’t include Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”) In more recent years, the duo has been experimenting with remixes and the like, but expect to know every word to every song when see this show. If you don’t, just say “love” a lot and nobody will notice. —Billy Manes

ELL, SHE WAS BORN A COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, something we all know thanks to the tour de force performance of Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn in the 1980 film Coal Miner’s Daughter. But Lynn was always destined for much more than having her hair pulled in the rural south. In fact, her humble beginning led to a revolutionary career in song. Unlike most country-western performers, Lynn was not afraid to wander into uncharted territory, fists up. To wit: she broke country radio barriers with songs like “The Pill,” “Fist City” and others).” And she hasn’t given up; she has no intention of doing so. In 2004, Lynn recorded an album with the White Stripes’ Jack White, opening her particular no-nonsense style to a whole new “alternative” audience. And in 2015, Lynn surprised critics and fans alike with the release of her Grammy Award nominated album Full Circle, which was her40th album to hit the top-10 on the Billboard country music charts. For this show, expect a smattering of hits from an almost unbelievable career, This “Honky Tonk Girl” isn’t slowing down. —Billy Manes
