MARSHALS, MARSHALS,

MARSHALS! BILLY MANES

The new Tampa Pride heads into its second year with some very important people leading the pack

“O

H MY GOSH!” Metro Wellness & Community Centers chief executive officer Lorraine Langlois says. “I think like everybody else, I was taken aback by how successful it was in year one.”

What Langlois is referring to, of course, is last year’s over-the-top Tampa Pride spectacle. As one of this year’s grand marshals, Langlois should have every reason to pop a cork and celebrate. However, this event and its adjacent honor aren’t the only causes for a party. Langlois and Metro just recently purchased their home base in St. Petersburg, thereby changing the shape of an ever-shifting community. Things are looking up. As they are for Tampa Pride. “Here we are in year two, and they have organized themselves so much,” she says. “It’s a stronger and a bigger organization,” adding that Metro played a big part last year, including HIV testing. Tampa Pride is back, back, back, then, after 13 years of lying dormant prior to

last year’s resurrection. With a bevvy of entertainers and dignitaries at the ready – some profiled in this guide – the festival is moving forward to what organizers hope will be an even greater impact in the Tampa community. At a February 16 meeting in Tampa, the organizing committee was palpably upbeat about the event, rushing through the details it takes to make it happen – VIP parties, tents, liquor, vendors – while keeping its collective eye on the prize: pride. Which, as Langlois points out, is still as necessary as it is fun. “My first pride when I moved here was down at Tampa College, down by the river,” she says. “It was my first CONTINUED ON PG. 9 |  |

|  | Pride Marshals FROM PG.7 ever exposure to the Ku Klux Clan. I will remember that moment. Of course we still have people on the sidelines saying we’re going to hell.” “I think what’s fascinating to me is the number of people coming to these events. I’m going to use the word ‘affirming,’” she adds. “I remember parades used to have ACT UP walking down the street. Now the floats are about being happy.” But it’s all happy, she says. She says that Metro is seeing alarming medical developments in the LGBT community, “things we haven’t seen in 10 years.” So we celebrate, but we also educate. Langlois won’t sit alone on the perch of marshal-hood, though. Joining her will be FOX 13’s Russell Rhodes, anchor for

Good Day Tampa on weekdays, who is clearly excited about leading the parade. “They just called and asked,” he says. “I’m just so excited about getting to do it. I was like, ‘I can’t believe they asked me to that!’ I was a debutante and a Kardashian all rolled into one!” Rhodes, a 30-year veteran in the television reporting business, says that even though his current branding is with FOX News, which is notoriously conservative, the parent company has never leaned in on local affiliate coverage, at least in his experience. “As an anchor, you try and report things as they are,” he says. “As a person reading the news, I don’t think it’s difficult for my viewers to know where I stand. I think it’s pretty obvious.” He’s proud. She’s proud. We’re proud. Welcome to Tampa Pride!

BIG SISTER BILLY MANES

Former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio continues to shine in the philanthropic world

T

HERE’S NO GETTING AROUND former Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio’s curriculum vitae. She’s ticked all the boxes: from the Hillsborough county commission, to the Hillsborough supervisor of elections office and into the executive glory of becoming Tampa’s mayor from 2003-2011. We caught up with the former politico, who is now the chief executive officer of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America. It’s no surprise that she’s being recognized as a chief ally at this year’s Tampa Pride. She has earned it.

WATERMARK: FIRST OF ALL, YOU’RE A PRETTY CELEBRATED PERSON IN YOUR OWN RIGHT, HAVING SERVED TWO TERMS AS MAYOR OF TAMPA. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN TAMPA? IT’S A BEAUTY PAGEANT QUESTION!

PAM IORIO: Yeah, right! Can I answer “world peace!?” I think I’m particularly proud of how our downtown redeveloped, the two museums, the progress we made on the Riverwalk opening up the river to people, the whole Tampa Bay History Center area and extending the Riverwalk into Channelside. One of our goals going in was to open up the river so that people could have access to it and it could become a destination. I think we did accomplish that goal, and we changed

it so that people could access the river and do it in a variety of different venues… It was either going to be a tremendous success or it wasn’t. But it was probably going to be one or the other. This turned out to be a huge success. YOU’VE MOVED INTO THE PHILANTHROPIC WORLD THESE DAYS WITH BIG BROTHERS AND BIG SISTERS. IS IT DIFFERENT?

It’s an extension of service, so in that regard, it’s very much the same. Being the mayor, county supervisor of elections, county commissioner, it’s all about helping make your community better. Now I get to work on the larger scale, CONTINUED ON PG. 16 |  |

|  | Pam Iorio FROM PG.13 on the national scale, in terms of how do we serve at-risk children who need mentors. It’s a different kind of service, but it’s all related. It’s service without the political element to it – I always enjoyed the political element; I thought it was fine; it wasn’t all that political at the local level like it is at the national level – so, it’s really been very gratifying. I love what I do. I get to work with a fantastic board of outstanding people throughout the country who are busy running their agencies and making a huge difference in young people’s lives. It’s really just a fantastic opportunity. I’m privileged to be able to do it. DO YOU THINK THAT ROLLS OVER INTO THE LGBT YOUTH MOVEMENT? OBVIOUSLY, THERE ARE A LOT OF SUICIDES AND HOMELESSNESS PROBLEMS WITHIN THE YOUNGER END OF THIS COMMUNITY. IS THAT SOMETHING BIG BROTHERS AND BIG SISTERS IS ADDRESSING?

Yes, I mean it is something that we’re currently addressing. We just received a grant where the proposal that we put in to the grant funder that was specifically for LGBTQ mentoring, because it is a population of our young people that needs mentors, that needs greater attention, particularly as they move through middle school and high school. It’s an area where I would like to see Big Brothers and Big Sisters expand.

HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL TO BE RECEIVING THE RECOGNIZED COMMUNITY LGBT SUPPORTER AWARD AT TAMPA PRIDE?

It’s just very nice. What can I say except that it’s very nice? GO FOR YOUR MISS AMERICA ANSWER!

My pageant answer! I feel that throughout my political life, I’ve always had a very close relationship with the gay and lesbian community, I’ve always been supportive of issues relating to the community, so it’s just a continual positive relationship. I know I should probably have a better

16

answer than that, but I don’t have one! It’s been very positive since I entered public life back in 1985. THAT WOULD HAVE PLACED YOU IN THE ERA OF SOME CHALLENGING TIMES FOR THE GAY COMMUNITY, SPECIFICALLY THOSE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY DEALING WITH HIV/AIDS.

The changes I’ve seen, as everyone has. I think it was 1989 or 1990 when I was on the county commission, and the issue came up as to whether we should add sexual orientation to our human rights amendment. It was a 5-2 vote; only Commissioner Platt and I voted for it. And the negativity that ensued was just unbelievable. I mean, we had a public hearing, and for those of us who have been involved for awhile, they might remember that we had a joint public hearing at the performing arts center with the Tampa City Council, and there were just thousands of people there. You couldn’t believe some of the comments that were being made. And, yet, fast forward to 2003 when I became mayor and I signed an executive order for domestic partner benefits, and I don’t even think that I received a single email in opposition. Then, of course, the landmark ruling last year on marriage. The progress has occurred at such a rapid rate, and it’s just really been gratifying to see that. It’s always been very simple for me: I believe that everyone should be treated the same. There should be equal opportunity and equal rights for everyone. And where you don’t see it, you should work to make it happen. That’s really just it, right? WHAT DO YOU THINK TAMPA PRIDE HAS DONE FOR CENTRAL FLORIDA? DO YOU THINK THAT PEOPLE SEEING THE POSITIVITY AND THE BRIGHT COLORS AND THE CELEBRATIONS HAS DETERRED THE NEGATIVITY?

I do, because the celebration is the celebration of the individual. It’s a celebration where someone is saying, “This is who I am, and I’m proud of it. Period.” And that is the first step toward gaining understanding among others who might view things in a different way.

PICTURE

THIS Renowned fashion photographer Mike Ruiz on celebrity and celebrations

“A

BILLY MANES

M I A CELEBRITY? I DON’T KNOW,” photographer Mike Ruiz says over the phone from New Jersey. “I feel there are other people far more worthy.” That’s not to make the attractive side-scene star of The A-List and RuPaul’s Drag Race sound dour, because he’s not. But on the morning of our interview, he was recognized at a gym, and the ambiguity of reality and reality television has not been lost on him. He just relocated out of Manhattan. “Apartment dwelling has gotten to me,” he says. Ruiz is, despite his humility, the celebrity grand marshal of Tampa Pride. And if it sounds like he suspects the spotlight isn’t right for him, there’s a good reason. What Ruiz would really like to be known for is his advocacy for animal rights, he says. He adopted a pit bull a few years ago, and that dog has enlightened him on things he may not have had on his radar before. It’s more than a flashbulb. “I just have a really profound relationship with him,” he says. It’s one of the most consistent relationships I’ve ever had. He’s taught me about consistent unconditional love. I’ve done so much

research about dogs, dog communication. Learning what’s there about animal … I just can’t get around watching an animal be abused.” To that end, Ruiz has been working with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, trying to use his platform for the greater good. “I just can’t get around watching an animal be abused,” he says. “I am not vegan, I’m not even vegetarian – in my defense, my body can’t tolerate being vegan: I can’t in good conscience wear leather anymore, I can’t wear fur. I just did a PETA campaign.” However, he’s also responsible for iconic images of celebrities ranging from Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj all the way to Betty White. He’s also philanthropically involved with many LGBT support organizations and doesn’t show any signs of stopping. His feelings, tellingly, are mixed about the reality television experience (“The reality is it’s all exploitation,” he says), but he’s moving forward – and looking forward to Tampa Pride. “I don’t know what to expect,” he says. “I’m going, and it will be fun. We all need to have fun sometimes!”

HI, ALEXIS RuPaul’s Drag Race Alum Alexis Mateo is out loud and proud for Tampa

I

BILLY MANES

T’S NO SECRET that RuPaul’s Drag Race has turned the drag world on its woven head in recent years. The LOGO juggernaut continues to splash its way through the collective lexicon of idioms (“Bye, Felicia”) and fabulous fun. Florida resident Alexis Mateo has been dragging brilliance around for years, covering her glorious self in awards and the crowns that come with them. On the phone, Mateo sounds like your best friend – you know, the one who does drag in the daytime and laughs a lot. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY FROM PRIDE EVENTS NOW, ESPECIALLY IN THE POSTMARRIAGE WORLD?

It’s very easy, because what we are celebrating is “pride,” especially in Tampa, where it’s just our second year. It’s really, really exciting. In my personal opinion, we can have an amazing and very positive celebration, so that’s the thing that we’re going to be celebrating: celebrating diversity, celebrating our Tampa people. And there are a lot of people that are going to come and entertain on stage and in the parade, local people with amazing, amazing positions. There will be business owners, politicians, celebrities, artists and singers. We’re raising the Tampa community first, and I think that’s the best and most important part of pride this year. DO YOU THINK THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT TAMPA THAT MAKES IT STAND OUT AS PARTICULARLY GAY FRIENDLY?

Oh my god, you know I talk to people about it. Every time somebody comes to

visit, I mention “GayBor” – you know, Ybor City – and how that GayBor district is so big. I’ve had the opportunity to travel around the entire country, and it’s like, there’s only a few states that have that “GayBor” feel, and Tampa is one of them. I love how close the bars are, how you can be free walking down the streets, and it’s so natural for everybody to see you being gay. Especially for me, being a drag queen, because I do drag shows here during the day. It’s not a big deal for me to walk down the streets in drag and feel safe in Tampa. The “GayBor” district is actually one of the best things in the country. YOU’RE IN CHARGE OF THE ENTERTAINMENT, BUT YOU’RE ALSO ENTERTAINING?

Yes! I was very lucky to win Miss Tampa Pride this year at the HoneyPot, and of course that gave me a platform to be part of the event. I’m very excited that we’re going to have Mike Ruiz, too. Mike Ruiz is an amazing New York photographer. He was my judge in RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3; I’ve also worked with him in several fashion shows and magazine spreads. SPEAKING OF, HOW HAS RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE CHANGED YOUR LIFE?

Let me tell you one thing, RuPaul’s Drag Race has changed my life in 360 degrees! Everything has moved in a positive way, and it has opened doors for me to market myself and brand myself in different stages. It is international. It has changed my life and my point of view of my drag career in a big way!
