HOOT FROM THE T

we asked photographer NICK MORRISH to provide our cover photo after finding out he left british airways to go freelance. Nick shares his fOND memories with us... I joined British Airways as a contractor in 2009. I left in March 2020 as a full-time employee. The 10 years I spent there was an amazing experience. People always ask: “what is there to photograph at British Airways besides planes?”. There was plenty. And yes, a lot of planes to photograph (I should say, I am no #avgeek and I found planes really difficult to photograph, but more on that later). I had to be a decent all-rounder and some of the things I covered included: portraits, documentary of the operation in action, PR and marketing activations, events, products, food, buildings, celebrities and our charity work (and everything in between).

It’s a cliché, but no two weeks were the same. My work appeared in internal comms as well as globally in newspapers, magazines, social media and the odd billboard. There were many moments that stand out for me. The arrival of the A380s and 787s was incredible. I was onboard our first A380 when it arrived at Heathrow. If you look carefully at Keith Williams (the CEO of BA) and Fabrice Brégier (COO of Airbus) coming out the door you’ll see my hand and camera right behind them. That was the start of a wonderful summer, working closely with the A380 team as the took the aircraft around the UK doing the entry into service procedures. I also really enjoyed the mentorship programme that ran during 2012, at which point I spent some time

with Heston Blumenthal and Tracey Emin who were two of the judges. They were both really amiable and it was great photographing them helping the winners of the competition realise their vision. I even managed to get a shot of Tracey releasing a dove from the roof of her studio. A trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras was one of those “it doesn’t get better than this” moments. It’s one of my favourite cities and we were given VIP access everywhere. Trips to see how money we were raising through Flying Start was being put to good use around the world was humbling. Rio de Janeiro, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Kenya, India and South Africa were just a few places I shot pictures in, as well as the UK. The happiness you saw as a result of the fundraising was incredible. Recently, photographing HM The Queen visiting Waterside for the centenary celebrations as part of the royal rota was a real privilege. The arrivals of the retro liveried aircraft ere good fun too, and of course the BOAC 747 with the Red Arrows at RIAT was something else. The best part of the job was photographing the operation. Trying to shine a light on the army of workers and huge operation that goes into every flight. Luckily, I was always welcomed and my (probably daft) questions always answered. BA’s strength will always be the people. I was in awe of the engineers, flight crew, cabin crew, ground staff and operations teams. Even the volunteers running the Heritage Centre, which housed all of the airline’s most vital mementos. The collection is awesome - with such rare artefacts as a telegram from the Queen Mother to the HM Queen, delivered to her on board a flight in 1952. The combined knowledge and experiences of all these teams was something to behold. I’ve been really lucky to photograph celebrities, too. Off the top of my head, I can remember: Buzz Aldrin, HM The Queen, HRH Prince Charles, Sarah Harding, Peter Shilton, Nicole Scherzinger, Yolanda Brown, John Cleary, Got Wan, Gary Lineker, Tony Hadley, Chris Hoy, Heston Blumethal, Tracey Emin, Nick Frost, Richard E Grant, Mary Berry, Shirley Ballas, Anton du Beke, Ola Jordan, Tess Daley, Vernon Kay, Eva Herzigova, Georgia May Jagger, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis. I’m sure there are people I’ve forgotten.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Going back to the New Orleans trip, that featured Nicole Scherzinger, Yolanda Brown and John Cleary. I’m a huge music fan which made two elements of that trip stand out. The first was having a front row seat for Nicole and Yolanda’s live performances on the aircraft going to New Orleans (one of the toughest things I’ve shot - I must have created a new form of yoga in the aisles and seat rows). Then in NOLA I photographed John Cleary performing at his house with the epic young jazz musicians. They were just jamming, but it was some of the greatest live music I’ve heard. And how could I forget the aircraft. As I said, I am no #avgeek so I struggled with getting nice images of planes, but loved the challenge of trying to do it differently to everyone else. It was a wonderful time and I have many happy memories of BA. But times change so I wanted to get my head around some new challenges. I hope they live up to the times at BA.

in that industry for 7 years. When I started training, I started buying more and more leggings and in most pairs I would see something I would fix or have different whether it was the fit or the material. Then one day I decided I would like to design my own leggings and have own good quality brand that all the women would be happy with no matter what shape, size or height you are! I love bold designs and I want every woman

to have the confidence to wear bold and be brave and confident! We are all beautiful in our own ways! I am loving every minute because YOU make it so much more fun to do! FAMILY

FAMILY MATTERS THE LOCKDOWN IS PUTTING PRESSURE ON family and RELATIONSHIPS, WHETHER YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A DIVORCE, BEING MENTALLY OR PHYSICALLY ABUSED OR HAVE KIDS IN SPLIT HOMES, IT IS A VERY DIFFICULT TIME. RITA GUPTA from LGFL Ltd – Leiper Gupta Family Lawyers updates us on current issues As the UK battles to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, family lawyers like me across the UK have been inundated with enquiries in unprecedented circumtances. As a family law specialist, the past few weeks have been some of the most challenging in my career. It’s safe to say that they didn’t teach us how to deal with a global pandemic at law school. Since the UK went into lockdown, and following the initial uncertainty about the government’s guidance and then future clarification, a whole host of new family law issues have emerged. From parents wanting to know how their child arrangements order or agreement stands, to matrimonial assets being severely impacted by the widespread economic devastation, Covid 19 has had a dramatic impact on cases. As a practitioner who believes in giving pragmatic and holistic advice, my first priority was to information share to those who I felt would be most in need of help and as

14

a parent and child law specialist my main concern has been the impact on the children. Whilst the country rallies together and shows incredible collaboration, it’s been incredibly disappointing to see parents feuding during the current crisis, and being unable to reach appropriate agreements. In some cases, it has been sad to see parents unable to see the bigger picture of what really is life and death, and even use the current circumstances as an opportunity to change arrangements and obstruct a child spending time with the other parent and extended family. For grandparents who only see their grandchildren during this time, this adds a double layer of detachment and distance for both the child and the wider family. Recognising this, my first action was to make a series of informative videos to share encouraging parents to co-parent during the circumstances. The courts are currently sinking in applications, re-

listings, adjournments and new cases whilst grappling with new technology. The President’s Guidance on family law matters and that from Cafcass was a welcome relief and gave a framework for how parents should be approaching matters. But family law has always been filled with shades of grey and parent’s views will often differ on their children’s welfare. I would say that every parent will ultimately need to be accountable for the decisions that they make during this process which can be scrutinised with the court at a later date. Put your children first is my best advice. Another of my greatest concerns has been the increased risk of domestic violence and psychological and emotional abuse during this period. Being in lockdown is challenging for the best of us, but to be in those circumstances with your abuser, would be something that would be impossible to comprehend for most. For that

FAMILY PRESSURE reason, I created an information fact sheet with national and local numbers of organisations that could help. When time is of the essence to secure your safety and seek help, you don’t have the luxury to conduct an in-depth Google search! Whilst the media often focuses on the impact on women, as a practitioner I can vouch for the fact that there are many men who also are subjected to abusive behaviours and should not be overlooked. The most vulnerable are the children, many of whom would previously have the sanctuary of their schools, are now at home 24/7, being exposed to parental conflict and abusive behaviours. The media story of the 14-yearold boy who walked in his pyjamas to a radio station after a feature about domestic violence was heart breaking but showed the importance of raising awareness at this time so that all victims can access help. With my Boutique MD hat on, lockdown and other virtual connections can lead to amazing creativity and new opportunities for those businesses who are agile, willing to embrace change and can diversify. As a modern law firm, we’ve always embraced technology, but the last few weeks have seen us take this to the next level. This has enabled us to offer a complete family law service remotely, to the point where we have now launched a full online director led nationwide family

16

law service. A virtually bespoke service ! I’ve also launched our firm’s podcast called ‘The Modern Family Lawyer’. Over the past few weeks, I’ve found myself answering questions that I’ve never had to answer before, and given some very candid advice to my clients, because at the end of the day family matters, in law and in life. Rita Gupta is co-founder of LGFL Ltd, a boutique family law firm in Berkshire. She is a Recommended lawyer in the Legal 500 and a Recognised Practitioner in Chambers and Partners, a former Venus Finalist for Hampshire Professional of the year 2017 and Lawyer Monthly’s Family Lawyer of the year 2017. SAMARITANS You may be feeling more worried or unsettled by what’s going on in the world. It might feel like things are changing, and there is a lot that’s outside of our control. Because of coronavirus, there are a lot of unknowns about the immediate and long-term future, and it’s becoming clearer that we are going to have to do things a little differently, particularly in the way we live our dayto-day lives. It’s natural that this uncertainty and change will affect people’s mental wellbeing. At Samaritans, we’re committed to helping those who are struggling, however we can. You may not be aware that there is a local Bournemouth Branch of the Samaritans, based in Durrant Road. Our branch, run purely by volunteers, remains open 7 days a week close to 24 hours per day. We usually go into the community, such as schools, residential care homes and the Bournemouth Police Custody suite – and even supermarkets. At this time, we are not able and that is why we are reaching out using social media and other formats. The Samaritans have a website, which is updated daily. MINDFULNESS

MINDFULNESS

Penny Metcalf Mindfulness How’s your day going? Busy? Busy as in getting a lot of things done, or busy like you have far too much to do, there is no hope of getting everything done, and your wheels are falling off? You are not alone. The Mental Health Foundation’s study showed that last year 74% of adults felt so stressed that they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope. And that was before we had even heard the term ‘lockdown’. Many of us now find ourselves juggling working from home and parenting, and we are continually bombarded by conflicting priorities and responsibilities. Now more than ever people are struggling to feel focussed and efficient. There are various options on how to deal with this. You can try to keep going and keep your wheels spinning as fast as you can. This is usually what we do, although it can result in the feeling of being continually exhausted and frustrated. Another option is to try to change things. One thing you can do is to learn a little bit about how the mind works, so that you can make it work better for you. With a few tweaks you can learn to increase your focus and decrease your stress. Is it time to make some changes and learn some new skills to make your life more sustainable? I am Penny Metcalf, a mindfulness trainer who helps organisations and individuals to learn the skills to improve focus, efficiency and creativity and to decrease the likelihood of burnout due to stress. TRAVEL

It seems people haven’t lost all faith in the travel industry as you might expect. The public appear to still be spending money on luxury train journeys despite the current pandemic. Richard Oborne from www.luxurytraintickets.com explains: “From June to December 2019 we had our best ever year for luxury trains in just six months. Our new company started really taking off and all seemed to be going well. Of course then Coronavirus came and we did see a slow down in sales. Some refunds were requested, although not as many as we thought. The big surprise though – we still get enquiries and sales for journeys in the future, even in the current climate. In fact, it’s our most expensive journeys that have been doing the best, costing between £5k-£22k per journey. So what’s the moral of all this? People want something to look forward to. Yes this is mostly people with money aside, but now they have time to spare and can’t go out, they seem to want to book something for when all this is over to look forward to and keep their spirits up.” Checkout the website for the unique travel experience www.luxurytraintickets.com

RECIPE FOR VITALITY

T S O O B E N IMMU Ingredients 400g can chickpeas, drained Zest 1 lemon, plus juice ½ 1 tsp ground cumin Small bunch coriander, chopped 170grams of silken tofu 100g fresh breadcrumbs 1 medium red onion, ½ diced, ½ sliced 1 tbsp olive oil 4 small wholemeal buns 1 large tomato, sliced ½ cucumber, sliced Chilli sauce to serve

Chickpea & Coriander Burgers

Method In a food processor, whizz the chickpeas, lemon zest, lemon juice, cumin, half the coriander, silken tofu and some seasoning. Scrape into a bowl and mix with 80g of the breadcrumbs and the diced onions. Form 4 burgers, press remaining breadcrumbs onto both sides and chill for at least 10 mins. Heat the oil in a frying pan until hot. Fry the burgers for 4 mins each side, keeping the heat on medium so they don’t burn. To serve, slice each bun and fill with a slice of tomato, a burger, a few red onion slices, some cucumber slices, a dollop of chilli sauce and the remaining coriander.

Holly, age 8 It’s the coronavirus that’s making us homeschool and we stay 2m apart from people on bike rides. I miss seeing my friends. On April fools day my mum played a prank on me that schools were opening but still I like home schooling. For home schooling I was in charge of the shopping budget and I couldn’t go over the budget. The games I like to play are Scrabble, Roblox, Tik Tok and House party. I play with my brother my sister, my mum and step dad. So stay home, stay safe.

Poppy age 9 I have mixed emotions about this virus. I am pretty scared about this virus because in my life time there has never been anything this serious and because I don’t know what would happen to me if I get it. Sometimes I don’t feel scared about it because we stay away from people and only go out for exercise or to go to the shop otherwise we would stay at home to home school or play games and have fun. I love home schooling when we do art and 5k bike rides and other fun things like that but when we do maths and english it can be quite hard so I don’t find it fun. To keep myself amused I do tik tok , house party, facetime my friends, play with my sister and my brother. MOST IMPORTANTLY STAY SAFE AND STAY HEALTHY
