Welcome To all of our speakers, nominees, sponsors and guests, I welcome you on behalf of the entire Watersprite committee to Cambridge for our 6th annual festival! This year Watersprite received submissions from a staggering 52 countries, making the competition fiercer than ever. From Nepal to Switzerland, from Mexico to Israel, our nominees have travelled from all over the world to be with us this weekend. Every year the standard of films we receive is incredibly high, and this year has been no exception, with documentary, animation and fiction films that showcase the impressive talents of our nominees in all skill sets. This year, with support from Creative Skillset, we have a brand new group of events - The Insight Sessions, which aim to educate attendees in specific skills. Be sure to stop by at our Stop Animation Stall running in the foyer all weekend and help us create one amazing collaborative short film. From Filmmaking in the Danger Zone to Acting for the Screen our schedule is packed with a wide range of sessions. Be it events aimed at the career savvy aspiring filmmaker, such as Setting up A Company and Getting Your Film Seen, to events that deal with current issues like Pale, Male and Stale? Diversity in Film and Television. From producing to hair styling - whatever it is that makes you passionate about film, we have it covered! It has been overwhelming to see how many people are willing to give up both time and effort to help bring this weekend together! I would like to say a personal thank you to all of our speakers, sponsors, jurors, online judges and volunteers - the festival would not be possible without your involvement. It is a huge pleasure as Chair of Watersprite to welcome our nominees from around the world who have fought such strong competition to be here this year. Watching these films is a perfect reminder of the fantastic reach of the Festival, offering captivating glimpses into a wonderful range of cultures and skills. I would like to congratulate all nominees on the extraordinary quality of their films. Watersprite also offers an opportunity for you, the next generation of filmmakers from around the world, to attend inspirational talks and to screen your work. One of our goals is to enable you as aspiring filmmakers to network and build bonds which last long after the festival ends. This is succeeding; Nick Rowland, Watersprite winner in 2013, went on to make his BAFTA-nominated film with the actor Joe Cole who he had met at Watersprite.

I would like to thank this year’s Festival Director Lily Staff and all the student committee who have somehow managed to find 25 hours in each day to bring this incredible Festival to fruition. Also, many thanks to the previous directors Ellie Rofe and Marianne Styger who have stayed as mentors and supporters, and our two Deputy Chairs Anne Morrison and Brian Woods. Thanks also for their generosity in giving up their time to Victoria Wood for hosting our Awards Ceremony and to all our inspirational speakers. The Creative Skill Set Fund Watersprite, the Cambridge International Student Film Festival, is committed to rewriting the rule book on what a student festival can be, and this year we are delighted to announce that Watersprite is supported by Creative Skillset's Film Skills Fund, which is funded by the BFI with National Lottery funds, through the Skills Investment funds. To coincide with this exciting partnership, we are excited to launch The Insight Sessions, a series of five talks and workshops that are focused on developing the practical skills of aspiring filmmakers, building their commercial awareness and creative confidence, and with a strong focus on exploring the diverse range of career possibilities in the television and film industry. The Insight Sessions are open to all, so whether you are a media student or an avid cinephile, these sessions will be an informative and exciting way to discover more about turning your love of film into a career. Furthermore, thanks to the generous support of the Creative Skillset Film Skills Fund, this year we are also offering fifty hardship bursaries for film students across the country to attend Watersprite. This is an incredible opportunity for students studying a degree related to the film industry as they will be able to travel to Cambridge to attend Watersprite for the first time.

Opening Gala W is for… Watersprite! Watersprite is back for the sixth year, and this year’s festival line up is better than ever. As the only free, international student flm festival in the UK, with entertaining speakers, inspiring events and a global reach, Watersprite is about recognising and rewarding emerging student flmmaking talent. Join us as we kick off Watersprite 2015 in the stunning surroundings of Gonville and Caius College’s Bateman Auditorium with our special guest speaker. THE INSIGHT SESSIONS

Stop-Motion Animation Stall “I am so excited about the stop motion animation stand because it provides opportunities to keep a mode of filmmaking alive that has been greatly threatened by the emergence of computer technologies, CGI etc. There is something so tactile about animation - you see the finger prints on the plasticine, movements are awkward and full of chracter - and of course it is a way of making films that does not involve sitting in front of a computer!” Ben Dalton

Watersprite’s stop-motion animation stall will be located in the foyer of St. John’s Divinity School and will be open for all attendees to get involved! Here, festival-goers will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience of one aspect of film-making by contributing to an animation story which will build up over the course of the day. Never had a go with stop-animation before? No worries! You will be supervised by volunteers from some of the best university animation courses in the country and learn the tricks of the trade. With each participant animating a few frames, we will by the end of the day have created a collaborative animation short! This will be screened later during the festival, so you may have your chance to see your hard work on the big screen! The stall will be at Watersprite throughout the weekend, so keep checking back to see what new and exciting tales (and potentially ‘tails!’) are being crafted!

With Love explores the powerful, often turbulent, yet always touching dynamics of family relationships. Watching Over shines a light on the role of guardians and protection in both fictional and real worlds. Following With Love, there will be a break of 15 mins. Watching Over will commence at 11.20 and attendees are welcome to attend either or both screenings.

So you want to make a Documentary? Documentary is a challenging and socially pervasive area of filmmaking. Join our session with acclaimed documentary makers Anna Hall, multi-BAFTA winning doc maker, Jezza Neumann, and 2015 BAFTA and Oscar nominee, Orlando von Einsiedel, as they disucss why documentaries continue to be such an important part of the international film industry. This event will be chaired by Anne Morrison and questions are welcome from the floor. For any documentary enthusiast, this really is one event not to miss! ANNA HALL Having produced and directed films for television for 16 years, Anna is best known for her social issue based observational work. Anna’s films have won numerous awards including the Prix Italia (Dunblane: Remembering our Children) and was Channel 4 shortlisted for best single documentary in their BAFTA nominations (Edge of the City). JEZZA NEUMANN BAFTA award winning documentary director, producer and editor, Jezza Neumann is renowned for putting himself in dangerous situations for the sake of his work. From documentaries on child poverty ( Poor Kids ), to child trafficking (China’s Stolen Children ), Neumann has worked for Frontline and Channel 4’s Dispatches to bring the realities of life under some of the world’s toughest regimes to a widespread audience.

Setting Up a Company Crowdfunding, Kickstarter, start-ups: where to begin? From a diverse range of backgrounds, this panel of three exciting speakers will answer your questions and share their experiences about the big bad world of business and film companies. David Parfitt is producer and CEO of Trademark Films, bringing us films such as I Capture the Castle, Shakespeare in Love and My Week with Marilyn; Simon Flamank is co-executive director of Bob & Co., a media-advisory and investment business that connects finance to media content as wide-ranging as children’s animation and feature films; James Baker is head of Red Arrow Entertainment Ltd, which invests in UK production companies as well as developing and packaging major drama projects for the UK, US and international markets.

THE INSIGHT SESSIONS

Hair and Make Up on Film This session will involve members of the public having the opportunity to take part in demonstrations on models and get made up, Hollywood style! Get to know another fascinating part of the detailed behind-the-scenes world of costume and design! Learn about the importance of make-up and hair styling in film, be that the backcombing that goes into achieving a bouncy Bardot bouffant, or how make up and special effects can transform any Hollywood star into an apocalyptic, flesh-eating zombie. There will also be discussions on potential career paths in hair and key skills that should be developed.

These seasoned professionals will outline their various professional interactions with the film industry and the reasons they decided to take the big step into setting up their own company. This should be an inspiring and fascinating session for anybody interested in the industry, and anyone who has considered the embarking on the career move of setting up their own company.

Konnie Daniel, an industry expert who has worked on films such as 28 Weeks Later, Hugo, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and ITV’s series Mr Selfridge will provide an interactive Q & A session about hair and make-up in film, looking at some of the most famous and wacky hairdos and looks.

Stacey Dooley and Seyi Rhodes are known for their groundbreaking work as television presenters and investigative journalists, reporting from some of the most dangerous locations around the world. Join them in conversation with BAFTA award-winning documentary maker Brian Woods, as we hear about their work on celebrated documentary shows such as Unreported World, Dispatches and Blood, Sweat and T-Shirts. This talk will also delve into discovering the reality of reporting from dangerous places - how does one make a film and stay safe at the same time? This event promises to be a fascinating discussion and is truly a unique opportunity to get to know some of the rising stars of British documentary films. STACEY DOOLEY Since appearing in a number of BBC 3 documentaries covering child labour issues in developing countries, Stacey has established herself as a leading figure in British documentary making, addressing hard-hitting issues including child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo, sex trafficking, and domestic violence. SEYI RHODES Seyi travels to some of the most neglected parts of the world as a reporter for Channel 4’s critically acclaimed Unreported World. He has presented BBC 2’s Explore series and various reports for More 4 News, as well as working behind the camera on documentaries for Channel 4’s Dispatches and BBC’s Panorama. BRIAN WOODS A trustee for Watersprite, Brian is a multi-awardwinning international documentary maker, working with True Vision to make programmes for the BBC, Channel 4, HBO, and Discovery. His first documentary (The Dying Rooms), was nominated for 2 BAFTAs and won numerous other awards.

WITHOUT BORDERS Feed your sense of Wanderlust with our screening dedicated purely to celebrating the global scope of cinema, with these short films exploring an array of topics such as the ancient practices of Buddhist monks, life in the countryside during the civil war in Nepal, to the fascinating traditions that have stood the test of time in rural Italy.

Tom Hollander will discuss the processes involved in film acting, and in particular how these methods, styles, approaches and audition processes vary from stage or radio acting. Tom Hollander is a Cambridge graduate who was a member of The Cambridge Footlights and president of The Marlowe Society during his time as a student. Tom starred in and co-created the television show Rev , which won the BAFTA for best sitcom in 2011. He is well know for both his comedic and dramatic film performances, including his roles in Pirates of the Caribbean , Enigma, Hanna, About Time, In the Loop , and Pride and Prejudice , for which he received The Evening Standard Film Awards Comedy Award and London Critics Circle Best Supporting Actor. Do you have an idea for the next hit film? Think you’ve got what it takes to pitch your idea to a range of top industry figures? This interactive workshop session will allow aspiring filmmakers to book a 15-minute slot with a selection of industry professionals, pitch an idea for their film and gain constructive feedback. It will be a rare opportunity to receive fantastic one-on-one advice from leading film experts about how to further your career and hone your creativity in this competitive industry.

Producing an Indie A panel of British independent filmmakers, including Robin Gutch, A.J. Riach, Georgina Lowe, and Kevin Loader, will discuss how they go about making successful British independent films, and what makes these productions distinct from others, whether big-budget, stateside, or European. ROBIN GUTCH Managing director of Warp Films, Robin is best known for his work as a producer on ’71, Hunger and Touching the Void. Warp X was set up in 2005 to lead the UK Film Council and Film 4’s Low Budget Film Initiative to develop and produce more lower budget films in the UK. The BFI celebrate Robin’s importance to the industry, “Employing Robin Gutch to produce six low-budget films in three years, Warp X redefined the industry rulebook for the way in which such productions could be approached in the UK.” GEORGINA LOWE Georgina is a BAFTA-nominated British film and television producer who has worked on films such as Mr Turner, Happy Go Lucky, Vera Drake and Another Year. In TV production, credits include BBC miniseries Tipping the Velvet and the ITV1’s Kingdom. AJ RIACH Recognised as a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit (2014) for his first feature film Set Fire to the Stars, a biopic about poet Dylan Thomas. Starring Celyn, AJ also managed to convince Elijah Wood and Kelly Reilly to join the cast. The film was nominated for the Micheal Powell Award for Best British Feature Film and the Audience Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. FARHANA BHULA Farhana is part of the development team at Endor Productions and recent graduate of Cambridge University. She was selected as one of twelve Fast Forward Producers at the London Film School and in 2014 her first feature film Bonobo was released in the UK.


Introducing: Orlando von Einsiedel Award winning Documentary director, producer and writer, Orlando von Einsiedel was nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA award this year for ‘Best Documentary’ with his film Virunga about a group of brave individuals risking their lives to save the last of the world’s mountain gorillas in civil war stricken Congo. Co-founder of Grain Media, Orlando is a leading voice in documentary filmmaking.

Winner of 23 international film awards and BAFTA and Oscar nominated this year for Best Documentary, Virunga is the story of Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the most bio-diverse regions on earth and home to the last remaining mountain gorillas. The UNESCO world heritage site is under threat by oil companies, armed militia, and poachers. Virunga is a powerful combination of investigative journalism and nature documentary that will leave you breathless with its gripping storyline, heroic characters, and beautiful scenes of one of nature’s greatest creatures. Followed directly by a Q&A session with the director, this is an incredibly special opportunity for budding documentary makers to learn more about the making of this award-winning film.

WEAVING NEW THREADS + WHAT LIES BENEATH After a jam-packed day of talks, discussions and workshops, this dusk screening at our festival hub is the perfect opportunity to kick back, relax and enjoy our unique programme of nominated short films. Weaving New Threads will showcase films focusing on the excitement of new beginnings, blossoming friendships and life-long relationships. What Lies Beneath delves into adult themes of transgression, death and love. Following Weaving New Threads, there will be a break of 15 minutes. THE INSIGHT SESSIONS:

Script Lab Tom is a Cambridge graduate who went on to study producing at the National Film and Television School. He has worked at Universal Pictures International, The Weinstein Company, Element Pictures and most recently joined Film4 as Development Editor. Lawrence is a script editor and development executive at Endor Productions and has previously worked as the BBC’s Independent Drama development editor.

Join our development script editors Tom Leggett and Lawrence Cochran in an interactive workshop with the two winners of our screenwriting competition. Watch and learn as Tom and Lawrence take the two student writers through a hypothetical development meeting based on their winning scripts, and highlight the key stages of turning an early draft into an award-winning screenplay. Audiences are encouraged to read the scripts beforehand, available online and at the door, and raise their own questions about the scripts themselves or the development process as a whole. Should I go to film school? What are the pros and cons of a film school education? As thousands of young people look for a way into the film industry we will be discussing the role of film school in helping young people into the industry.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a film school education for careers in producing, directing, screenwriting and so on, versus going straight in as a runner? Is the experience provided by a film school worth the thousands of pounds that it costs, which many students can’t afford? Shedding light on these questions will be representatives from film schools around the country: Ian Sellar (National Film and Television School), Ceri Higgins (Bournemouth), Anna MacDonald (London Film Academy) and Jane Roscoe (London Film School), each of whom have had careers in the industry as well as being affiliated with film schools.

Best of the Fest W is for... winners! Be the first to watch the winning films of Watersprite 2015 in full, only revealed at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday night. Our filmmakers go on to do great things in the film world, so this is an unmissable opportunity to see the future talent of the industry! Still 'Male, Pale, and Stale?’ DIVERSITY IN FILM & TELEVISION In the wake of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, this event will spark a provocative discussion on the unequal representation of BME and women in the film and television industries as we ask: how far have we really come? And where do we go from here when it comes to changing the face of the industry for the better? Given the the industry’s power to influence popular thought, both film and television have a responsibility to accurately reflect the social make-up of their culturally diverse audience. With renewed calls for more concrete action from broadcasters to improve diversity on the small screen and tackle prejudiced programming, the question of whether enough is being done to meet this social and cultural responsibility is far from resolved. Sorely underrepresented behind the scenes, in senior positions, and on-screen, when will broadcasters start to reflect an ethically diverse Britain?

JESSICA RAINE Starring in the critically acclaimed BBC adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall. Jessica is one of the UK’s most celebrated actresses. In 2012 she took the lead role in the popular television series Call the Midwife and stars alongside Daniel Radcliffe in The Women in Black. KRISHNENDU MAJUMDAR An aAward-winning producer and director, Krishnendu was the series Director of An Idiot Abroad, which broke viewing records for Sky1HD, and he also directed two episodes on the second series which was a worldwide hit. He is on the Board of Directors UK and he was the Chairman of the BAFTA Learning and Events committee from 2006-10. DANNY LEE WYNTER Upon graduating from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Danny was cast as the lead opposite Sir Michael Gambon and Dame Maggie Smith in Stephen Poliakoff’s BBC/HBO films Joe’s Palace and Capturing Mary. Screen credits include Hot Fuzz, Trial & Retribution, Luther, Holby City, Episodes, and the television film Mr Stink. ANNE MORRISON Anne was educated in Belfast and at Churchill College, Cambridge. In 2009 she took up the post of Director at the BBC Academy. Anne is one of our trustees, continuing to offer her support to the festival year after year.

Getting Started in Directing The role of the film director is multifaceted and hugely inspiring. Join our panel of directors as they discuss the processes involved in directing, as well as their (very recent!) experiences with breaking into the industry. Participating in this panel are a number of young and talented directors including winner of the first Watersprite film festival and award winning TV Drama and commercial director William McGregor, BAFTA Breakthrough Brit Destiny Ekaragha, Cambridge alumnus Matthew Knott, and award-winning commercial director Jamie Childs. This event promises relevant, and relatable advice from those who have found success. JAMIE CHILDS Jamie launched his career when winning a competition to shoot a TV commercial that was aired on Channel 5. He has moved into the world of commercials and is now an accomplished and decorated director. His commercial for ‘Make A Wish’ Foundation was very well reviewed and Jamie has recently shot spots for Nescafe, ITV Creative and Huawei. DESTINY EKARAGHA Destiny, a Director and writer, was one of BAFTA’s 2014 ‘Breakthrough Brits’. She gained recognition with her short film, Tight Jeans in 2009 and has since gone on to make her feature film directorial debut with the drama Gone Too Far which premiered at the BFI London Film Festival MATTHEW HAMMETT KNOTT Matthew is best know for known for Bonobo (2014), On This Island (2012) and Ouroboros (2011). Having already won two awards and receiving nominations for a further two, the former short filmmaker has already been incredibly successful and looks to have a bright future. WILLIAM MCGREGOR William has a longstanding relationship with Watersprite - the festival takes its name his Film of the Year Award-wining short, ‘Who’s Afraid of the Water Sprite?’. Since graduating, William has directed Channel 4 show Misfits, and has been directing commercials for The Mill.

30 | THE FILMS This year the competition for our 11 Watersprite Awards was fiercer than ever before. We received over 306 submissions from all corners of the world and were delighted to see the festival’s international reach expand further than ever, as entries flooded in from film schools in countries such as Nepal and Mexico. Films were automatically entered into the relevant genre category for consideration, and entrants self-nominated for two technical categories in which they believe their film excelled. We would like to thank all those involved in the judging process for their invaluable insight and time, and The Union, Encore and Endor Productions for use of their London venues, without which the juries would not have been possible. We are thrilled at the response of many judges and jurors who have commented upon the impressive talent and skill on display and would like to reiterate to all shortlisted and nominees the incredibly high standard of competition. We believe this reflects the promise of filmmaking in future years and we are proud to support the careers of these blossoming filmmakers.

Stage One: Online judges comprising of film students and film enthusiasts across the globe began the two stage judging process in December. Viewers scored each film out of ten for its relevant merits, also considering films for a wildcard entry from the categories of Production Design, Acting, Sound and Original Film Music. If the viewer believed the film was particularly strong in one of these categories, they had the option of nominating that film to be considered. From here, we calculated a shortlist of eight films per category.

Stage Two: Industry professionals, members of the press, and previous Watersprite winners then independently watched the eight films in contention for a nomination, meeting in London in January to participate in a jury based on BAFTA’s working practices. Jurors discussed and deliberated the strengths of each film and narrowed the nominations to four films. From there, jurors made a case for the entry they believed should win the award before votes were cast anonymously.

The land and the man are both provided with the water coming from the sheep clouds, and on their trip they pass a tree with a grave beside it. It’s the grave of the shepherd’s dog, and one day, while passing the grave, our shepherd takes a rest and loses control of his flock...

BIRDSONG DIR. BEN CHILDS | NEW ZEALAND Birdsong is a quirky coming-ofage short film set in a stylized 90s New Zealand. It follows a young boy’s changing perception of his eccentric father. He steals dogs, runs obsessive tests on injured animals, and wears a finch-like bird mask. A tragic turn raises the stakes, the relationship now hinging on the validity of the father’s experiments.

DISINTEGRATION DIR. ALVARO MARTIN | SPAIN Samuel is an eleven-year-old kid who lives on the street as a consequence of the economic crisis. Living in Spain, his story is not dissimilar to the country’s current situation, with hardship affecting many and an unemployment rate of almost 25% . Despite this, Samuel tells us his story with irony and humor, showing an amazing lucidity considering his young age.

EIGHTEENTH BIRTHDAY DIR. MARTA PRUS | POLAND The day before her eighteenth birthday, Goska leaves the Lodz Youth Educational Center to return home. She hopes to organize a birthday party with her boyfriend and friends, however the first meeting with her mother ends in a heated argument. Like a mirror, the film shows the different aspects of the young protagonist’s personality, delicately portraying the anxieties of a difficult adolescence.

ERLEDIGUNG EINER SACHE DIR. DUSTIN LOOSE | GERMANY To fulfill the last will of his mother, the young Jakob Adler needs to meet his biological father who is an inmate at a psychiatric hospital for murdering his own brother. Before meeting him, Jakob wants to talk to the doctor in charge, Dr Weiss, and as the story unfolds, we learn of the true scale of the tragedy.

ERRATA DIR. AREK BIEDRZYCKI | POLAND Did Jerzy Kosinski live like he wrote or wrote like he lived? Did he create credibly or exist implausibly? What exactly did his suicide mean? Was it an errata for his biography or his literary work? This film asks many questions and

FAENGER DIR. FABIAN KOPPENHÖFER | GERMANY The Catcher desperately tries to prevent children playing on the edge of a steep cliff from falling into the abyss. Ultimately, he finds that he has no other option but to go his own way.

RODRIGO ZARZA RIOJA | SPAIN Set in Spain and faced with the progressive aging of the population and the dire economic situation, the Administration launches an assisted euthanasia campaign aimed at the so-called ‘unproductive beings’. Keen to get their hands on the money promised for the death of an old man, the Arévalo family will try to get rid of Granddad… unaware that he has plans of his own.

But Knopka cannot forget him, especially when she meets a baker who looks exactly like the man she is trying to forget.

The winners of the three genre awards - Fiction, Documentary and Animation - are considered at length, and fiercely debated over. Which showed the most originality? Was the filmmaker ambitious in their vision? Is the short well executed? Did it create a strong impact, or response? The winner of this award represents sheer excellence in student filmmaking, and we strongly commend all of three films in the running.

The Audience Award This year, you too get a say in who deserves a prize at Watersprite 2015! At each of our screening sessions you will find a voting sheet with the names of our nominated films. Please score the films you have had the opportunity to view out of 10, and pop your verdict in the box at the welcome desk. In doing so, you will help one of our nominees win an additional prize: courtesy of Final Draft, the winner of our Audience Award will receive a copy of Final Draft 9 screenwriting software at an estimated value of ÂŁ200.
