Out of Failure: Disaster Relief Shelter With Nora Begin and Lydia Witte

Shortly after hurricane Katrina, many local survivors were sent to the Superdome to ride out the storm. People were trapped there for days with very few belongings and five square feet to their name. Tensions were high with the density of people staying on the field. We decided to design a shelter that could not only be built on flat land, but could also have optional feet which would adjust to the rise and run of stadium seating. The shelter has an exterior fabric that allows it to breathe as well as weather resistance and privacy, and the furniture within the shelter is fully adjustable to the needs of the residents.

Center for Agricultural Education

Many inner city children do not know where their food originates. In this scenario, the addition to the Chicago Tribune Tower was burned to the ground and something was needed in its place. I chose to build a center where children could go and learn about where their food comes from, as well as interact with and purchase the crops grown there. There is a farmers’ market where local farmers can go sell their products. One portion of the building is devoted to livestock, while the other portion is devoted to vertical farming and everything it produces.

Market The First Level is different from the overall organization to provide extra space for an indoor market. The weather will not always be permitting of an outside market, but when it does, the glass overhead doors can be retracted. The retracting of the doors connects the interior and exterior market spaces.

Clifton Ave

On Ludlow Ave, I designed a literary center that used psychology to define and organize the building. Using Freud’s Id, Ego and Superego, I separated the building into three main areas. The first was a large irregular staircase which includes seating areas for the public. The second area is slightly more organized, containing the bookcases and tables. The third area is a very orthogonal set of rooms with meeting areas and a computer lab. The path from least organized to most organized is the transition from Id to Ego to Superego.

St. Bernard Public Safety Center

St. Bernard was in need of a new police and fire station that would be better suited to their needs. The placement was on a highly traveled intersection, creating the need not only for efficiency, but beauty as well. The building flows efficiently both as a fire station and a police station while creating a feature building for the city of St. Bernard.

DePaul Cristo Rey High School

DePaul Cristo Rey High School needed more space for their students. The school acquired three trailer units to be moved onto their property for a permanent expansion. The sections of the trailers were rearranged to best fit the uses of the new facilities, creating new, larger interior spaces for the school. The new space has enabled more students to attend as well as giving the students a new outdoor space.

Metro Uptown Stops

The bus stops around the Uptown neighborhood in Cincinnati needed to be redone and Metro decided to build designed stops instead of the standard. These models are the different iterations designed throughout the process. After trying different styles of shelter and kiosk, a set was chosen and construction began. The Metro green is the key color in the shelter. It is used in the glass as pictured, as well as an accent color just below.
