This will be Neil’s twelvth year with Waterway. He truly enjoys working with the great group of people at Waterway,we always have fun! Neil is committed to improving our level of Guest Service and ensuring that all of our guests feel special. Neil enjoys the Shuswap and surrounding area getting out skiing and mountain biking as much as he can. The Shuswap affords lots of great outdoor recreational opportunities and Neil is enjoying them all!

Alice is the CFO at Waterway Houseboats. Alice’s career with Waterway started in the summer of 1992 and she is proud to be a part of the evolution of this great company. Alice has watched all the boats in our fleet being built at our Waterway Houseboat Builders plant. She has witnessed the hard work and dedication of the employees in making and maintaining the best possible product for our investors and customers. Alice says she’s worked with many amazing people over the past 25 years and feels we are continually striving to be better. Alice enjoys living a quiet country life surrounded by the mountains and enjoys spending time with her daughters and granddaughters.

Responsible for running the day to day operations of the houseboat company, Colleen accomplishes that with a group of fun, like minded staff, that enjoy the hectic pace and many opportunities that arise in a day. Our focus is on our great customer experience, from check in, to check out. Colleen says, hey, we’re not perfect, however, the entire team certainly does their very best to deliver a great vacation to our guests. We have a knowledgeable team with a focus on excellent customer service. Houseboating on Shuswap Lake is a great way to spend time with your friends and family. It doesn’t even matter what the weather holds, the lake offers so much to see and do and you have all the luxuries of home right with you. Colleen loves the area, Sicamous is home and she’s proud to be part of a thriving business and community that welcomes so many for a short time, to enjoy, what we enjoy all the time.

Howie is our resident Mr. Fix it, he’s always happy to assist another team or happy to help a customer.When he’s not at work,you’ll find him fishing or trying out his culinary skills on a new recipe. Howie enjoys spending time with his family, he enjoys the great outdoors and loves two extremes – ice fishing and Mexico!

Chris brings some great leadership and project management skills to his position as Assist. Operations Manager.

Kim has been with Waterway Houseboats since 2005.Starting in our Guest Service Department as a Customer Service Representative then promoted to Guest Services Supervisor. She has now moved to the position of Purchaser. Kim’s knowledge of the business and customer service makes her a great asset to the Waterway team. Kim, her husband and their 2 young children love to spend their spare time enjoying family, friends and all the benefits and beauty the Shuswap has to offer.

Sharon is excited to be back for her third season. She strives to build strong long term relationships with Waterway Houseboats guests and owners. She is continually working on improving customer services to ensure that quality and service exceed our customers’ expectations. She is passionate about the Shuswap and all that it has to offer. When not at work, Sharon enjoys the outdoors, boating, campfires, travelling and gardening. She and her husband look forward to exploring the Shuswap and area when their two granddaughters and kids come to visit.

Denise joined the Waterway team in 2015 the Accounting/Admin Dept. and brings with her over 20 years of office experience. Away from the office she can be found volunteering with the Girl Guides of Canada, and along with her husband putting on many miles of driving their girls to and from 4-H, baseball and soccer. Any other free time is spent camping and enjoying all the benefits of living in the Shuswap.

Stephen has 45 years in the automotive business. He spent 20 years managing and owning tire stores around the Okanagan. Stephen and his wife Nancy moved to Sicamous 15 years ago and enjoy spending their time on the beautiful Shuswap Lake.They have one son, three daughters, a grandson and four granddaughters.

Debbie and her husband run a successful taxi company right here in Sicamous. When Debbie isn't working with her team here at Waterway you can also find her running the taxi. In Debbie’s spare time she likes to spend time spoiling the grand-kids and then sending them home.

She brings with her the value of her 10 years+ background in the guest and customer service industry. Amber prides herself on leading the team by example, with the highest level of focus being given to creating the very best experience possible for each guest, their families and friends. She is very excited to be part of a vibrant environment which allows and encourages each employee to contribute to the future success of the team. Amber has a passion for all things involving the arts,nature and creativity. She, her husband Brandon, daughter Summer and black lab, Sailor have lived in Sicamous for 2 years. In her downtime,Amber loves to BBQ in the backyard and lounge at the beach while working on her tan.

Campfire Games Twig Castles Kids love going to the beach and making sand castles, right? So the next time you go camping, start with the same concept but add a twist. Bring a bottle of white glue and scissors. Gather some small twigs and create a twig castle! Catch, Don’t Catch One camper goes into the middle of the circle with a ball. They go around the circle saying, “Catch” or “Don’t catch” to the campers. If a camper catches the ball and the person in the middle said, “Don’t catch,” they are out. For an extra challenge, speed it up or add an extra ball. The last person standing is the new middle person. Group Storytelling Mutual storytelling is a fun twist to the usual campfire “story time.” One person will begin the story with one line that serves to set

the scene. Then the next person will add a line. Be creative and have fun! Murder in the Dark Place scraps of paper for the number of people playing in a bowl. One scrap has a black dot, one scrap has a star, and the other scraps of paper are blank. Everyone draws a scrap of paper and keeps it to themselves. The murderer is the one who draws the black dot and the detective is the one who draws the star. Those campers with the blank scraps of paper are the potential victims. The murderer must wink at the other campers to “kill” them without the detective noticing; however, once they receive the wink, they may die so all can see—without revealing the murderer. The game ends when the detective catches the murderer or the murderer kills everyone except the detective. *There can be an award for the most dramatic death.

Noah’s Ark Noah’s Ark is a memory game for the whole family. Everyone sits in a circle and takes turns listing animals in Noah’s Ark in alphabetical order. The first person says, “I’m going on Noah’s Ark and I’m bringing two apes.” The next person says what the first person brought and adds something else to it, such as “I’m going on Noah’s Ark and I’m bringing two apes and two birds.” The game continues around the circle with everyone reciting the list in order and adding their own animals. If you make a mistake, you’re out of the game and you must move out of the circle. The last person in the circle wins. Sing Songs A traditional campfire sing-along can be fun for the whole family. Choose the songs and use pots and pans as instruments. You can even have a dancing contest around the fire.

Cruising the Lakes Though Waterway Houseboats is a company that is involved in various business models, ranging from houseboat manufacture to used boat sales, it is the vacations side of the company that is the real driving force behind the corporation’s growing success. “Houseboating is an awesome and unique experience” says GM Neil Millar, “and it’s not just our boats, it’s the beauty of the lake the surrounding areas and all the diverse activities that people come to enjoy.” To say that people enjoy coming to the Shuswap is an understatement. Our region is rapidly becoming one of western Canada’s premier vacation destinations. “With over 60 houseboats in our fleet, we’re one of the biggest operators on the lake” says Millar. With demand growing for higher end houseboats, Waterway has a large fleet of Genesis class houseboats and most recently the

amazing 94 foot long Legacy class houseboats, of which there are two. All boats in the fleet are equipped with hot tubs and many have incredible features such as dryers, dishwashers, microwaves, spacious staterooms, entertainment centers and tube slides. Added services located at the Waterway Activity Center include ski boat, jet ski, paddleboard, kayak, fishing boat and mountainbike rentals. Bedding and linens supply, catering, as well as safety turtles for young children are also available. Protect B.C. Waters from ZEBRA & QUAGGA MUSSELS

Shuswap fishing

Zebra and quagga mussels are propeller blade shaped freshwater mussels that can reach up to 30 mm in size. They are not yet in British Columbia and pose a serious threat to native species and fisheries in our lakes and rivers. Live mussels attached to boats, other watercraft and recreational equipment can easily be transferred from one body of water to another. Mussel larvae can float undetected in water in bait buckets, live-wells, pumps and bilges. Once introduced, zebra and quagga mussels are very difficult to eradicate and costly to remove. They threaten native species and fisheries, and increase maintenance costs of hydroelectric, domestic water, industrial, agricultural and recreational facilities.

Practicing CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY is key to stop invasive mussels from entering B.C.

Shuswap Lake offers excellent recreational fishing opportunities for species such as Lake Trout and Rainbow, Bull trout, Kokanee, Burbot and Whitefish.

CLEAN off all plants, animals and mud from your boat and equipment (e.g. boots, waders, fishing gear). Use available power washing stations. Sicamous History In the 1800s Sicamous and area was inhabited by a semi-nomadic Indigenous nation called the Secwepemc or Shuswap. They crossed the Rocky Mountains to hunt buffalo on the plains. In this area they were called the "Schickamoos". In 1871, a Provincial Map shows Schickamoos Narrows, which in early history was known as a "meeting place of Indians". In 1864 gold was discovered on the Columbia. Seymour Arm became a supply centre in the Big Bend Gold Rush. In 1885 permanent settlers arrived after the driving of the Last Spike at Craigellachie, which linked Canada sea to sea. Among the first settlers in Sicamous were the families from Finland. Old Town, or Eagle Pass Landing as it now known, became an almost instant town in 1871. It was the central supply centre for railway construction. Today it is

used primarily for recreational purposes such as sledding, houseboating, hiking, swimming, and biking. Later, in the early 1900s CPR hill became a residential development. Finlayson's store and a jail were built in 1892, adding a post office in 1904. The first school opened around 1908. In 1949 the bridge was built across the channel, previously having been just a ferry crossing. Several hotels opened. In the early 1900s the Sicamous Hotel was built. The hotel was Tudor style with 75 rooms and a large elegant dining room. The dances were locally popular and well attended. The hotel was burnt down in 1964. Eagle Valley, in Sicamous, became the home of many settlers. They came and farmed the land, putting up with forests, deep snow, and hordes of mosquitoes. The first newspaper in Sicamous was

the Eagle Valley News. It was printed for the first time on 22 October 1958; it continues today. Sicamous was incorporated in 1989. In June 2012, the community experienced major flooding due to heavy rains and an abnormally high amount of snow melt from higher elevations nearby. Over 350 residents were evacuated, and many homes were heavily damaged.[4]

The magical Shuswap gives you over 1000 kms of shoreline to play on and explore. The community of Blind Bay lives at the end of this arm. Although beaching is not available on Copper Island it is still worth a visit. You can moor a speedboat and hike the trails located on Copper Island. Visit Anglemont Marina, or take a splash off the rope swing located near St. Ives. Cabins and homes dot the shoreline of Shuswap Arm; this is one of the only Arms to have road access to the homes on it. that drains via the Little River into Little Shuswap Lake. Little Shuswap Lake is the source of the South Thompson River, a branch of the Thompson River, a tributary of the Fraser River. It is at the heart of a region known as the Shuswap Country or “the Shuswap”, noted for its recreational lakeshore communities including the City of Salmon Arm. The name “Shuswap” is derived from the Shuswap or Secwepemc First Nations people, the most northern of the Interior Salish peoples, whose territory includes the Shuswap. Shuswap Lake consists of four arms, forming a shape reminiscent of the letter H. The four arms are called Salmon Arm (southwest), Anstey Arm (northeast), Seymour Arm (north), and the main lake (west). Shuswap Lake connects to Little Shuswap Lake via the Lit-

Salmon Arm When leaving the channel onto the Shuswap, you are immediately on the Salmon Arm. There are plenty of things to see and do. The City of Salmon Arm is at the Southwest end of this arm. Pull into the city wharf, spend the day shopping on Main Street, or eat at one of the many restaurants in town. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking for more of a nature walk, the beautiful Margaret Falls is located at the northwest end of the Arm. Although overnight beaching is limited, the end of the arm is only a few hours away and day trips are a very popular option before heading toward the narrows for the evening. Salmon Arm is a city in the Southern Interior of the Canadian province of British

Columbia that has a population of 17,464 (2011). It is on the shores of Shuswap Lake, where the Salmon River empties into the Salmon Arm reach of the lake. It is a tourist town in the summer, with many beaches, as well as camping facilities and house boat rentals. Salmon Arm is home to the longest wooden wharf in North America. It is the location of the head offices of the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District. Salmon Arm became a city on May 15, 2005, its 100th birthday of incorporation. Directly north of the city, across Shuswap Lake, lies Mt. Bastion. A photograph of Mt. Bastion serves as the background for the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license of BC.

The largest employer in the Salmon Arm area is the forest industry and related businesses. The city benefits from close access to the Canadian Pacific Railway. Tourism is also important to Salmon Arm, bringing many tourists from Vancouver and Calgary. Most tourists arrive during the summer season, either stopping en route to other holiday destinations, or to visit the Shuswap Lake. Salmon Arm has several hotels, campsites and houseboat rental outlets. Relative to its size, Salmon Arm has a wide variety of restaurants and cultural attractions. Probably the most popular of the Shuswap Arms is Seymour. Albas Falls is one of the main nature attractions on Shuswap Lake. The short hike to the breathtaking Albas Falls is definitely worth it. Enjoy the pub at the end of Seymour Arm and there are plenty of beaches to spend your evenings on. Seymour Arm, known historically also as Ogdensville or Ogden City and Seymour, is an unincorporated settlement and former town located at the head of the inlet of the same name on Shuswap Lake in British Columbia, Canada. Located at the mouth of the Seymour River and the disembarkation point for trails over passes across the Monashee Mountains connecting that river’s valley to that of the Columbia River, and navigable by water from Savona at the farther end of Kamloops Lake.

Seymour Arm became the location of a bustling boomtown serving travellers to the Big Bend Gold Rush on the Columbia which grew up around a Hudson’s Bay Company post founded at the start of the rush in 1865. With a peak population of 500, Seymour Arm had 13 stores, 11 shoemakers, 8 wash houses, 6 barber shops, 6 physicians, 6 saloons, 5 bakeries, 3 restaurants, 2 blacksmiths, 1 bathhouse, 1 drug store, 1 stationery shop, a coffee and doughnut stand, and a livery stable. The town was destroyed by fire in the late 1860s but was revived again by English developers promoting the Seymour Arm Fruits Land Company, and a post office, school and hotel were established in 1910. The hotel closed in 1925 and by 1940 the town was largely abandoned, save for a few remaining settlers. Today, the hotel has since reopened with

a restaurant and pub, and one of the orchard-era mansions remain. The locality is a farming and recreational community. Source Wikipedia

hidden gem of beaches awaits you at Roberts Bay on the south end. Also home to Anstey-Hunakwa Provincial Park, a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. 6,852 hectares in size, the park was established April 18, 2001. The parks aims to protect grizzly, black bear,

moose, mule deer, pine marten, and Townsendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s big-eared bat. Includes the most extensive undisturbed Interior Cedar Hemlock moist-warm Variant 3. Anstey Arm, is the arm if you are interested in getting away from it all, being out in the wilderness, and one with nature.

There is a large cedar and cottonwood forest at the mouth of the Anstey River. CAUTION! Shallow sandbars require a cautious approach. In late summer, boats cannot reach the shore.

WATER SAFETY • Your PFD Won’t Work If You Don’t Wear It. Many people who died in boating accidents last year, drowned within a few feet of safety. Most of those victims owned life jackets, but they weren’t wearing them when they perished. Prolonged immersion in cold water causes hypothermia. This condition will cause in death unless reversed. Never give alcohol to a victim of hypothermia. Use blankets for warming and if the person is conscious, administer warm liquids and warm, moist air for breathing.

• Before entering the Sicamous channel from either side of the Shuswap or Mara Lake you must receive approval from Waterway Base. •M ake sure you enter beneath the bridges in a straight line between the pillars. If you do not, the Houseboat can be slightly sideways between the pillars and the current will tend to push the Houseboat towards them. If the Houseboat is straight when traveling between the pillars, the driver can counteract the current by utilizing the throttle and “powering out” of any trouble.

•A fter driving under the railway bridge you must make a sharp turn to the left. There is a sandbar in the water just past the railway bridge which is marked by a white pillar with a green capped navigation light. You must stay BETWEEN the railroad bridge and the green and white navigation pillar to avoid the sandbar. • P ermission to proceed towards the bridge is required from Waterway base.

Environment Waterway recognizes the Shuswap Lake as a beautiful resource that needs protecting. We are very active in protecting this lake, so that future generations can enjoy it as much as we do. Waterway has attached all of our kitchen sinks into the black water holding tanks. Washers have also been decommissioned, however the dryers on the boats equipped with them still operate. Our new dock and the connection to the District sewer is now complete. As a result, we will be containing all of the water in our hot tubs. Our boats which are plumbed for grey water will be 100% contained. It is important to remember that all black water is currently being contained. WATER USE: Instructions will be given on the use of the hot tubs. Adding water as necessary to the hot tub is fine. Please take brief showers and do not leave the

water running in the sink while doing dishes or while using the washroom. Remember that a significant amount of grey water goes into the lake. When you are on a beach surrounded by other houseboats, all grey water being drained goes into the water surrounding the houseboats. We ask that you leave the beach prior to showering or using the dishwasher and do so out on the lake. It is better for everyone and also according to the Ministry of Environment, for the lake as well. Waterway uses environmentally sensitive soaps and detergents, which are also unscented and free of endocrine disruptors, which may have a long term impact on the health of the lake system. Please help reduce our impact on the Shuswap by taking the appropriate measures and using the cleaning products provided on your houseboat.

Nature and Culture History: The area is named after the Shuswap Secwepemc First Nations people, the most northern of the Salishan speaking people. This group was the first to inhabit the region, as evidenced by kekulis (semiunderground pit houses), which have

been found at Scotch Creek and nearby Herald Provincial Park. Kekulies may be found in many of the locations of Shuswap Lake Marine Park. Pictographs or rock paintings have also been discovered around Shuswap Lake. During the nineteenth and early

twentieth century, European explorers, fur traders and surveyors came to the area. Then in the late 1800s, gold was discovered, and the population in the area soared. Today, little remains of these historic tales. Conservation: Flowers, trees and shrubs are part of the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s natural heritage, please donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t damage or remove them. Cutting of trees - live or dead - for firewood is strictly prohibited. Wildlife: Cougars and bears are occasionally seen here. Wildlife is potentially dangerous and may be encountered at any time. Make lots of noise when hiking where signs of bears are found. Practice safe food storage, and dispose of garbage in the containers provided. Park users should always be aware of bears and other wildlife in our park environment. Never feed or approach bears or other wildlife.

Backcountry Bears

Hiking, mountain-biking and camping in bear habitat is an exhilarating way to spend a day, a week or a month. And seeing a bear is far more likely to enhance your wilderness experience than spoil it. Knowing what to do and how to behave when the moment comes will keep you and the bear safe - and your spirits high! 1. Be prepared! Learn how and why bears behave the way they do and know how to react to an encounter or attack. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re recreating in grizzly country, ensure you can tell the difference between a black and a grizzly bear. 2. Before setting out, check with the appropriate authorities (provincial wildlife officer, park warden, etc.) to see if there has been any bear activity along your route. Obey all trail closures and information signs. If there are bears in the area, consider choosing a different route. 3. Always, always carry bear pepper spray or

another deterrent - and know how to use it. 4. Stay alert and watch for bears and bear signs. Tracks, trampled vegetation or scat are all signs that bears may be nearby. Be especially alert where bear foods are abundant. 5. Make lots of noise. If a bear hears you coming, it will usually avoid you. Warn bears of your presence by talking calmly and loudly or singing, especially in dense bush where visibility may be limited or around rivers or streams where bears have trouble hearing you coming. Your voice will help identify you as human and non-threatening. 6. Travel in a group during daylight hours. Especially in grizzly country. There is no record of a bear attacking a larger group of people. 7. Avoid animal carcasses. Make a wide detour if you smell or see signs of a dead

animal (e.g. ravens circling). Black and grizzly bears can kill large animals for food, and they are attracted to carcasses that have been killed by other causes. Leave the area if possible. 8. Keep dogs on a leash and under control. Dogs may be helpful in detecting bears, but they may also agitate them and create a conflict situation. 9. Keep your distance. Never approach bears. If a bear (or any animal) approaches, back away in order to maintain a safe distance. Use binoculars, spotting scopes and telephoto lenses to view and photograph wild animals up close. 10. Secure all potential bear attractants. Never feed a bear, either intentionally or unintentionally, by being careless with your garbage or food scraps. Always store your food and garbage in a bear-proof container and keep it on the back of the houseboat at night.

Houseboating History Houseboating began in England as canals that were built in the 1700’s for shipping cargo throughout the country. This fell into disuse due to alternative shipping methods. People began to use the canals for recreation and the houseboat was born. With Canada being a commonwealth country, the novelty of houseboating began to catch on as an exciting vacation...a home away from home…on the water! The canals and waterways in Canada provided the perfect environment for houseboating. Canada is well-known for its quality manufacturing of houseboats for Canadian and American clients. Marine maps are important items to have when navigating through various waterways. You can’t just pull into a gas station, in most cases, and ask for directions. There will be some instances where you will be in complete wilder-
