PUBLISHER’S LETTER

You know that slogan “Don’t mess with Texas”? I say, “Don’t mess with Texas summers”! There’s never a question of what season we’re in once summer hits Central Texas. The seemingly unrelenting heat means you rarely need to check the weather forecast because the daily high temperature hardly varies. And I can’t think of a better way to spend a long, hot summer evening than by being outside with family and friends— and food. I’m a lifelong fan of food, especially baked desserts. In fact, my eating yummy sweets spurred me to pursue my passion for making them. Baking amazing treats to share with others is truly food for my soul, and the kitchen is my happy place. We all know how food can bring people together, and I got to see this first hand many times in my “past life” as a professional baker. Yes, before I became a magazine publisher, I started a bakery from scratch, and it grew to a level beyond what I ever imagined possible. During those six years of owning and operating a bakery, I bonded with a dream team of cake artists in our dedication to make amazing cakes for clients. And we bonded with so many of those clients when they picked up their orders or we delivered to them. Hearing a birthday kiddo laugh

excitedly upon seeing her or his special cake or having a bride envelope crafted? Those experiences never failed to put a song in my heart. Sharing great food is an experience that helps people connect with one another no matter their differences. Because I believe that food is the glue that holds people together, I wanted this issue to be all about the amazing opportunities in our communities to not just eat great food but to connect with the people in our lives while dining together. I certainly hope the stories in this issue encourages you to get out to try someplace new and to enjoy every bit of summer food and fun. Savor the time you have with family and friends, and make great memories along the way! Cheers!

“We have utilized Jacquelyn on several occasions to purchase and sell homes. She is the consummate professional. No one knows more about the Lake Travis market than she does. She works tirelessly for her clients behind the scenes and keeps the buying and selling process stress-free. I would highly recommend Jacquelyn as a REALTOR . She is also a wonderful human being.” ®

“Jacquelyn professionally and efficiently handled a real estate transaction for my husband and myself by representing us as the buyer’s REALTOR . This was a long-distance transaction, but Jacquelyn provided good communication and seamless service, and never did we have any concerns about not being there in person. She provided excellent customer service by offering to handle many things for us in our absence. I would recommend Jacquelyn without reservation.” ®

AWARD WINNING DREAM As first time custom home owners, we were faced with the daunting decision of who should build our dream home. As we interviewed multiple custom home builders, it was apparent right from the start that Tod Arbogast did not assume he had the job. Instead, he wanted to ensure that we were well informed of the custom home building process as a whole. Tod is an extremely honest individual that was with us every step of the way throughout our home building journey. We were very involved home owners, visiting the site many times a day it would seem, and we were always greeted kindly by all staff working for or on behalf of Arbogast Custom Homes. In the end, we not only received our dream home that was so eloquently envisioned by Geschke Group Architecture, but we were fortunate enough to win the HBA Max Award for best custom home in Austin, TX. We are grateful to Tod and his team for this unforgettable experience! —The Huciks

Strength and Honor Crosswater Helps Fund Scholarships for Military Families Just as it is committed to providing boat owners with excellent service, Crosswater Yacht Club (CYC) is committed to honoring the sacrifices made by U.S. military personnel. “From our grand opening in May 2013 to today, we have championed one cause—Folds of Honor,” explains CYC general manager Roland Adams. The nonprofit organization awards scholarships to the spouses and children of military servicepeople who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty. Everyone can help this great organization by visiting CYC, which holds fundraisers at its marina all summer long. Later this fall, on October 19th, it again hosts Rods and Ribs, a car show and barbecue rib cook-off. Last year, CYC raised $135,500 through its events and 2013. “That’s more than 64 scholarships,” Adams notes. Crosswater Yacht Club offers wet slip storage as well

Patriotism on Parade July 4th Festivities Bind Lakeway’s Community Mark 243 years of American independence by attending the 44th annual Lakeway July 4th Celebration. The fun begins at 8:30 AM with a parade from Live Oak Golf Course to the Lakeway Activity Center. Folks can gather along the mile-long route down Lakeway Drive to enjoy floats, golf carts and other participants portraying this year’s theme, Fly Me to the Moon: One Small Step for a Man, One Giant Leap for Mankind. The grand marshal for 2019 is retired U.S. Navy Capt. Kenneth “Taco” Cockrell, the Austin-born astronaut with five space shuttle missions on his service record. At 10:30 AM, the annual firing of the city’s cannon signals the start of the community celebration at the Lakeway Activity Center. Following this resonant boom is the Pageantry of Flags. First held for the U.S. Bicentennial, this tradition involves the presentation of all 50 state flags in the order in which each state entered the Union. While at the activity center, residents and guests can munch on hot dogs, hear the grand marshal’s speech, sing patriotic songs with the Lakeway Wildflowers chorus and enjoy the camaraderie that helps this city maintain its small-town feel even as it grows by leaps and bounds. Starting at noon, celebrants can splash away the rest of the day at the Lakeway Swim Center. It will be open until 8 PM, with admission for the Independence Day holiday set at $3 per person and includes in-andout privileges. Many of the slips have patio space so that boat owners can enjoy where they store their vessels when not out on the open water. Turning 21 is a big deal and cause for a big celebration. For its 21st annual Garden Party event, the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum showcased more than just its breathtaking grounds and magnificent pieces from Charles Umlauf and others artists. This year the museum invited a variety of performing artists to use its lush landscape as their stage on which to entertain party guests. Among them were singers Mela Sarajane Dailey, Jasmine Williams and Luke and Jack Weaver as well as singer and pianist Austin Haller, all of whom put on a special performance during the VIP hour. Guests also enjoyed performances from Panoramic Voices, Rey Rodriguez from Austin Classical Guitar and Austin Shakespeare’s Marc Pouhé performing selections from Macbeth and The Merchant of Venice. Aerialists with Sky Candy put on a thrilling show to help close out the night. Held on a sunny Thursday evening as April drew to a close, the party was also an opportunity for attendees to nibble and sip a variety of offerings from local restaurants and purveyors of wine and other libations. On hand were Intero, Maudie’s Tex-Mex, Dripping Springs Distilling, Julie Myrtille Bakery, Ben Milam Whiskey and Snarf’s Sandwiches and several other providers.

Heartfelt Generosity Austin Turns Out to Support Heart Health

“The noblest question in the world is ‘What good may I do in it?’” These words from Poor Richard’s Almanack rang out in the Grand Ballroom at the JW Marriott as the Austin chapter of the American Heart Association (AHA) held its 22nd annual Heart Ball on May 11th. The numerous attendees all did some good as they bid on silent and live auction items and pledged money to help the organization in its aim to raise some $2.5 million at the event. “Heart attacks and strokes affect us all,” said 2019 Heart 24 WATERWAYS | June 2019

Ball Chair Bobby Dillard, “and the AHA is fighting for all of us to have better lives.” The organization, long devoted to preventing cardiovascular diseases and stroke, is working to establish what it calls a “culture of health” in which healthful choices are accessible to all, thereby improving the health of local communities. While Austin has a reputation of being a fit city, certain health statistics indicate that the population of Travis County will benefit from these efforts. Some 25% of adults in the county have high blood pressure, and 40% of adults have >>

high cholesterol. And despite being the birthplace of Whole Foods, more than 30% of the county’s neighborhoods don’t have ready access to healthful foods. For these reasons and more, the Austin chapter is vigorously committed to realizing the AHA’s 2020 impact goal: to improve the cardiovascular health of all people by 20% and reduce deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20%. To achieve this goal, the organization funds research to better understand, treat and prevent cardiovascular diseases. In fact, it’s currently invested some $1.5 million in research at The University of Texas at Austin. It’s also continuing its efforts to connect local grocers with funding so they can open or expand neighborhood grocery stores to make healthful food more readily available. A third approach is to train even more people to perform CPR, particularly schoolchildren. The Heart Ball was an opportunity to directly impact this work. For every $5,000 donated during the Open Your Heart portion of the night’s program, sponsor Texas Mutual Insurance Company pledged to provide a CPR in Schools Kit to each of the nearly 30 Austin schools needing one. If anyone doubts why school kids should learn CPR, the experience of the event’s 2019 Passion Speaker, Lakeway’s own Michael DeMarco, is ample reason. On Valentine’s Day morning in 2014, the then-42-year-old owner and CEO of Lake Travis Builders was riding a stationary bike at home, part of the healthful routine he and spouse Marion had adopted that had already helped them get more fit. While pedaling away DeMarco began feeling unwell and cried out to eldest daughter Aly, age 12 at the time, to help. 26 WATERWAYS | June 2019

She wisely called 911. Using the training she received in a recent babysitting skills class and with assistance from the 911 dispatcher, Aly performed CPR on her father, who’d gone into cardiac arrest. The chest compressions kept blood flowing to her father’s brain and organs. She did this exhausting work for nearly nine minutes, when EMS responders took over. “I was so thankful I took that class because I knew somewhat what I was doing,” Aly has said of her lifesaving actions. What felled DeMarco was a cardiac arrhythmia, for which he received an implantable defibrillator to reset his heart rhythm should it go awry. In the five years since the incident, DeMarco and his daughter have spoken frequently about the importance of CPR training. “You may not think you are ever going to use it, but I had no idea I was ever going to use it,” she has said. “And the day I had to use it, I was very thankful I took my CPR class.” The DeMarcos continue to encourage CPR training for children as well as adults. “You’re never too young to save someone’s life.” By expanding CPR education, funding research and helping to bring healthful choices to all communities, the American Heart Association is making an impact both now and in the years to come. Said Heart Ball chair Dillard, “I can imagine a future with heart attack and stroke not being on the leaderboard of top causes of death in our country, but I cannot imagine this future without the work of the American Heart Association.” With the funds and the enthusiastic support from the 2019 Heart Ball of Austin, the organization is sure to make that future a reality.

The track at Churchill Downs might have been sloppy and the skies over Louisville overcast for the 145th Kentucky Derby, but in Austin on Derby Day the skies were blue and spirits high for The Shade Project’s fifth annual Down & Derby event. A little more than 300 people congregated at Gather North Lamar to not only watch the Run for the Roses but also to raise money to help the host organization continue its efforts to end skin cancer. Before the big race attendees could buy raffle tickets and “bet” those tickets on the ponies. They also had the opportunity to bid on some 60 silent auctions, preview the 15 live auction items, tipple traditional mint juleps, belly up to the bourbon bar and munch on tasty bites from Taco Flats. Lurleen Ladd, songstress and cofounder of The Shade Project, entertained the crowd with a variety of rocking and soulful tunes. And then there was the race…. The crowd cheered on their favorites, roared approval when Maximum Security crossed the finish line first, collectively held its breath when the Kentucky Derby stewards reviewed the objections…but weren’t quite sure what to make of the historic disqualification of the winning horse and the naming of long shot Country House as the winner. While the result of the race will be debated for years to come, the results of Down & Derby are indisputable. Some $32,000 was raised to help The Shade Project’s programs.

BEAUTY

Achieve That No-Makeup Look By Lisa Jauregui When the heat of summer hits, many of us reevaluate our individual beauty routines, seeking to ditch those heavy, full-coverage products in search of a fresh, flawless, natural look. The popular no-makeup makeup look is perfect for this time of year because you get the benefits of lightweight, multitasking products yet appear as though your visage is au naturel. While achieving this look may seem easy, you should heed a few dos and don’ts to master it. Lighten Up First, choose an all-over facial care product that offers both sunscreen and light coverage. Toss out those full-coverage foundations—including matte foundations—and reach for products such as BB creams, CC creams and tinted moisturizers. These products offer a bit of coverage, help even out skin tone and give your skin a natural, hydrated appearance without looking flat. Get Cheeky For cheeks, look for cheek stains or sheer cream blush sticks that can double as your lip color. For Caucasian skin, a good pinky-peach shade can mimic the natural flush of cheeks and lips. I love Wander Beauty’s On-the-Glow Blush and Illuminator stick that can be used on the lips and eyes for a sub42 WATERWAYS | June 2019

With My Naked Eye To truly achieve the no-makeup look, skip eye shadow and eyeliner. Reach instead for a volumizing mascara. When applying it to your lashes, wiggle it at the very root of the lash line to create a full, thick, natural lined look. To maximize the effect, curl your lashes before applying the mascara. That way you’ll get all the drama you need for the eyes without applying any additional makeup. When the heat is really on, use a waterproof mascara so it won’t smudge or run in those triple-digit temps. Summer Gold If you prefer a little color on your eyes, look for eye shadow in a shade of gold, peach, copper or champagne to keep the look soft and natural. These neutral shades are perfect for summer. Also perfect for summer: cream shadow sticks because they’re easy to apply and give the eyes a subtle shine. Run it across the lid, and then smudge it with your finger to blend out any harsh lines. If using a lighter shade, add a touch on the brow bone to give the brow highlight and lift. Keep It Tight If you feel the need for more definition at the lash line, apply an eyeliner pencil in a chocolate or bronze shade under the >>

upper lash line for a more natural look. This technique is called tightlining, and you can find several tutorials on YouTube showing how to achieve this look. The end result is a thicker-looking lash line, not a lined eyelid.

Luscious and Ripe Lips should be soft, hydrated and slightly tinted close to your natural lip color. To achieve this look, I love a lip gloss with a medium pigment, sheer lipstick or even a lip stain topped with a sheer lip balm. Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Lip Cream is a great formula because it has a moderate level of color and shine and feels comfortable and light. It’s the perfect blend of lip balm and lipstick—and has SPF 15 protection. Avoid long-wearing liquid lipsticks, flat matte lip products and any other product that makes the lips look dry and opaque. Sun-Kissed Perfection For the finishing touch to your no-makeup look, sweep bronzer in a light gold shade across the face from the cheek bones, over the bridge of nose and to the temples. Keep it soft and subtle so it looks like your skin has a natural glow. Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Bronzer is soft and buttery (hence the name), and the smell is amazing thanks to its blend of three butters derived from plants found in the Amazon rainforest. Remember that no matter what products you use or forego, your goal with a no-makeup look is to look like your natural self—just perfected! Resist the urge to apply too much color, keep the skin light and natural to achieve a go-to look this summer.

The popular no-makeup makeup look is perfect for this time of year because you get the benefits of lightweight, multitasking products yet appear as though your visage is au naturel.

Just Browsing Keep your eyebrows clean and groomed. Comb the hairs upward and then gently in so the eyebrow looks polished. If your eyebrows are on the thin side or you just want to give them a bit more oomph, tinted eyebrow gels are your go-to product because they give volume and keep the hairs in place in a way that appears soft and natural. For example, Benefit’s Gimme Brow has fibers that add volume and mimic the look of real hair. By using a volumizing eyebrow gel, your brows will look full and groomed but not drawn in.

TRU-FACTS ABOUT FOOD AND SKIN by Kevin Giacontiere, PA-C

Our skin is a true reflection of what is going on inside our bodies and all the foods that we consume can have an adverse or positive effect on our skin.

What are some of the foods that can have a positive impact on our skin?

What are some foods that can have an adverse effect on our skin?

Foods that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids have a positive impact on your skin. Cold water fish like cod and salmon are packed with omega 3s which can keep our skin supple and moisturized. They can also contribute to strengthening the collagen which is the matrix that supports our skin keeping it tight and wrinkle-free. Omega 3s also are well-known as an anti-inflammatory which can reduce redness and help with acne/rosacea and psoriasis.

Milk or dairy can have bioavailable hormones that can cause an increase in oil production in the pilosebaceous unit and can cause acne breakouts or worsening. Dairy can also increase blood levels of androgen which can lead to acne breakouts. Teens that are especially prone to acne should limit dairy intake.

Vitamin C rich foods like oranges, mandarins and kiwi fruit are high in vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant and is very important in collagen production. Antioxidants are also known to prevent sun damage and aid in skin repair. Carrots are rich in carotenoids which can be a natural sunblock. Daily consumption of carrots can add a healthy golden hue to our skin but in excess can cause a yellowish stain to our palms and soles.

Alcohol can dehydrate our skin leaving it dull and wrinkled. Even two glasses of wine can dehydrate our skin leaving it less elastic so always rehydrate with lots of water after drinking alcohol. Limit alcohol consumption to have supple glowing skin.

STYLE FILE Alta Alexander’s Altatudes boutique helps shoppers express their unique style, even when lounging poolside.

Get Your ‘tude on! Altatudes’ Leading Lady Tackles Summer Style Dilemmas Alta Alexander realized her childhood dream when she opened her Altatudes women’s boutique in historic East Austin in 2017. She knows how to stay true to her own style—her Tude, as she calls it—and is here to help Waterways readers stay chic this summer—and beyond.

What are the current rules for wearing white? Am I only supposed to wear it between Memorial Day and Labor Day? In the last few years, the tradition of wearing white or a shade of it for only a certain part of the year has changed, so you now see it year-round. Some of us took a little while to get on board with this change, but the “rules” look like they’re not reverting back any time soon. You’ll continue seeing white apparel, shoes, handbags, hats and more—and they will be rocked all year long. Party dress codes seem to be more confusing than ever, and I’m often left guessing when an invitation reads “Poolside Chic” or “Patio Wear.” Can you offer any insight and guidance? Ever since Casual Fridays and business casual attire took hold, we’ve been in a perpetual state of clothing confusion. These are some new dress code trends: 46 WATERWAYS | June 2019

Beach Formal Think flowy dresses and billowy-legged jumpsuits in fashionable prints worn with minimal jewelry. Finish with wedges for events on a grass lawn or sandals for when the party’s right there on the sandy beach. Smart Casual This one’s a step above dressy casual and with a stylist twist to keep it from being too boring. A pop of color and unique shoe should complete the look, keep you on trend and address the host’s dress code wishes. Creative Black Tie A more contemporary, fashionable take on traditional black tie, this dress code offers plenty of opportunities to have fun! Think of it as a theatrical dress code, and get creative with the details, textures, unique combinations of elements—and don’t forget the embellishments. I plan to wear a slinky cocktail dress to a midsummer gala. The air conditioning will surely be blasting for the entire event. What’s your advice for staying chic and warm in my skin-baring dress? Would a pashima scarf be déclassé? We’ve all likely been in a situation like this. A scarf or shawl can absolutely help you in a predicament, but I’d opt for a dinner jacket or tuxedo jacket. You can enter the event wearing it. If the venue isn’t an icebox, just drape it over your chair. If it’s cooler, you’re ready. Altatudes is located at 1717 E 12th and online at altatudes.com.

I love hanging out lakeside or poolside with friends. How can I best accessorize so that I look stylish when sporting my swimsuit? Hats are back in a big way. Long gone are the floppy numbers you happen to find in the attic or at the bait shop. Fashionable hats with structure are all the rage and have made their way to the casual side of fashion. They’re a great way to top off our summer attire. And don’t snooze on scarves! They not only serve as a lovely bathing suit cover-up but can double as a head wrap after you get out of the water.

Summers in Austin are filled with sunshine and heat, so how should you dress to stay cool? Here’s some guidance for the best ways to dress fashionably and comfortably when the heat is on.

As the temperature rises, selecting clothing made of breathable fabrics becomes even more important. You’ll be most comfortable in cotton, linen, rayon and blends of those three during the dog days of summer thanks to their ability to absorb moisture and let air in. Avoid seersucker, chambray, eyelet and jersey, which are warm-weather winners. Keep in mind too that light colors reflect light and heat, so push those black, navy and other dark-colored garments toward the back of the closet to make room for whites and pastels and the like because they’ll keep you cooler than darker colors in the good old summertime.

Get Loose

Layer

Go for looser cuts and styles. Looser is definitely cooler in hot weather because loose-fitting clothing creates a layer of air between your skin and your clothing to release body heat. Based on that same principle, you should avoid skintight clothing that constrains your body and traps heat. Also, if you don’t have to, don’t tuck in your shirt! That extra fabric pushed against your skin only makes the heat feel more oppressive. Here are some apparel options that are sure to help release the heat: • A-line dresses, with a loose fit for your arms, chest and waist • Tops that do not hug your stomach or torso • Shorts and skirts that fit loosely around your waist and legs • Unlined blazers and jackets • Cropped wide-leg pants If you find yourself in a situation when only jeans will do, select the lightest weight of denim you can.

Air-conditioning is our best friend and a lifesaver during an Austin summer. However, all the loose-fitting, lightweight, breathable clothes we wear to survive the heat don’t offer much insulation when the AC making an indoor space quite frigid. Layering is the key to staying comfortable when moving between home, office, shopping and dining out. Don’t leave home without a blazer, shawl or cardigan so that you’re prepared for the 30-degree temperature change between indoors and outdoors.

Especially on those week long streaks of 100+ degree weather. It is critical that we use as many water wise strategies as possible in our landscapes to conserve and utilize our water as efficiently as possible. See below our list of what the pros do to save you water! • Check your irrigation system each spring as well as your controller settings • Replace your existing irrigation controller with a “Smart” controller. • Use automatic weather-based adjustment shuts off controller during rain. • Add a rain sensor to existing irrigation controller • Use drip irrigation for landscape bed plants and trees • Aerate and top dress lawn turf areas 1x per year • Adjust your lawn mower to a higher setting. A sleeveless dress is a versatile choice you can easily dress up

you down in the heat. As for the bottom-most element of an outfit, your shoes, keep in mind that feet tend to swell in the heat. Keep your tootsies cool by wearing flats, sandals or even peep-toe or perforated shoes. Don’t overlook an opportunity to top off an outfit with a great hat. Brimmed hats are perfect for when you’re outside because they protect your face from the sun and save your head from the heat. Pull It All Together Need inspiration for putting this guidance into practice? Check out these ensemble recommendations.

Cropped pants with short-sleeve blouse and cardigan. Triple-digit heat doesn’t rule out pants entirely from your summer wardrobe. Just skip the skinny-cut styles, and opt instead for a looser-fitting, slightly cropped silhouette. Wear a loose short-sleeve blouse, and bring along a cardigan to throw on when you get cold at work. Since the pants are a little slouchy, add a pair of heels to add length to your legs and dress up the whole outfit. A statement necklace pulls the entire look together. Skirt, Camisole and Blazer. Pair a colorful flowing skirt with a blazer in a solid color and a matching camisole or a nice t-shirt. These pieces offer quite a bit of comfort and still look very polished. Add dramatic earrings for fun. If you keep in mind these suggestions, you can beat the summer heat and stay chic.

Sleeveless dress and blazer. A sleeveless dress is a perfectly versatile choice, and you can handily dress it up or down. It’s also easy to throw it on at the last minute if you’re rushing out the door. Have the blazer handy for when you’re at the office or at an appointment. Enjoying supper out? Throw on a light, colorful scarf to add glow to your face.

Explore North Austin’s Booming Brewery District By Cindy Brzostowski Summertime in Texas and a cold beer are a match made in heaven for many folks. You’ll find what’s been dubbed the North Austin Brewery District in the area bordered by MoPac, U.S. Highway 183, Braker Lane and Metric Boulevard. It features about half a dozen breweries all within easily navigable distance of one another and all worth visiting. Their proximity to one another and excellent offerings make for a beer lover’s perfect summer day out. These destinations are all within relatively easy walking distance of one another, and some public parking options are available. You can typically find some electric scooters in the area, but this mode of transportation may not be best once you’ve imbibed a bit. Regardless of how you make your journey, ensure you have at least one person with you who isn’t imbibing who can drive or manage transportation and logistics. Safety first! 62 WATERWAYS | June 2019

CELIS BREWERY Start your journey along Metric Boulevard at Celis Brewery, a seven-minute walk from Adelbert’s. ELEVATING A COCKTAIL “You can always elevate a cocktail by choosing a sexy glass. Flutes are great for sparkling wine cocktails. These days, there are so many sexy double old-fashioned glasses to choose from. Don’t serve a cocktail out of a water glass. At Bar Peached, we use a variety of edible flowers to garnish drinks. Of course, you could always go the tiki umbrella route for tiki drinks.” >>

11 Tons of Pink Himalayan Salt!

Here at the Austin Salt Cave, we do what’s called Halotherapy. During our 45-minuteHalotherapy sessions, we’re pumping salt infused air into the salt room. The whole time you’re breathing in minuscule salt particles, coating the entirety of your respiratory tract as well as getting it on your skin. The salt then draws moisture to it, reducing inflammation in the respiratory tract and on the skin. Extra fluid pulled into the lungs thins out mucus, allowing it to be more easily expelled. On top of all that, salt is antimicrobial! We are located behind The Grove in Lakeway. 2951 RANCH ROAD 620 S SUITE 102, LAKEWAY, TX 78738 • (512) 838-6545 • AUSTINSALTCAVE.COM

Essential Summer Party Elements “When I think summer get-together, I tend to lean towards grilling outside and mixing up some of those grilled items with cold sides and fresh, seasonal salads. These days, I like to grill off a Japanese binchotan grill box, which limits the size of your get-together or, alternatively, limits which items are coming off the grill.”

On a blazing hot day, there’s nothing like enjoying a refreshing cocktail and some tasty bites in the shade.

ASK THE BUILDER with national award-winning b u i l d e r, S h a n J e n k i n s , of Jenkins Design Build

Question:

What are some ways to help make our home a safe, healthy environment? Answer:

The Air We Breathe The air inside our homes/garage can be more polluted than outside, so it’s important to have a well-sealed home, proper fresh air intake, and superior air filtration. Equally important is efficient equipment that is sized properly for fresh air exchange and dehumidification. Airborne allergens depend on elevated humidity levels, and drier air is more comfortable in our mostly hot-humid climate.

reverse osmosis (RO), and activated carbon filtration, especially on wells where the water has to be disinfected. At a minimum, I recommend point-of-use RO filtration for all drinking water and ice makers. Don’t undervalue good refrigeration either to keep your food fresh, longer. Dogs cool themselves through mainly the surface of their tongues via panting as well as the pads of their feet, she explains. “They are not as efficient in cooling themselves and should not exert themselves for as long as we might without some type of cooling help, nor should they be exerting themselves in temperatures at which we might.” Without a cool assist, a dog can begin to experience heat stress. Del Re urges canine guardians to know the symptoms of heat stress and how to treat them.

The initials signs of heat stress include heavy panting and a mouth that’s more open than normal, almost as if the dog has a big grin. The dog’s tongue protrudes much farther out of his mouth than usual, and the end of it has a bell-like shape. If you notice these symptoms, get your pal indoors as soon as possible. Definitely offer some water. You can also drench the dog in cool water, cover him in wet towels or get him to lie down on a cool surface. The symptoms become undeniable when the dog’s gums become bright pink, and her protruding, bell-shaped tongue develops rippled edges. If your dog’s symptoms have reached this stage, take the same actions described for the initial symptoms, and then also place an ice pack to your best friend’s belly to provide additional cooling and to protect her vital organs. As heat stress progresses, the dog’s heart rate elevates, his gums become pale, and he has difficulty breathing. At this stage the dog needs immediate veterinary care along

With a bit of precaution and common sense on your part, your best friend won’t experience even the initial symptoms of heat stress. 78 WATERWAYS | June 2019

with the cooling measures previously explained. Ice packs on your best buddy’s head and belly help protect his brain and vital organs. Heat stress is most severe when the dog experiences vomiting, diarrhea or both and has very labored breathing. At this point, the dog may even suffer convulsions and be on the verge of collapsing. Sadly, a dog suffering heat stress this severe may be near or at the point of no return. Nevertheless, cooling measures and care at an emergency vet may give the dog a fighting chance.

Beat the Heat (Stress) With a bit of precaution and common sense on your part, your best friend won’t experience even the initial symptoms of heat stress. “The first thing is to choose cooler times of the day to be out,” urges Del Re. Even if the temperature feels right for you, it may not be for your friend. “Dogs are closer to the ground’s reflected heat, and manmade surfaces can be very hot.” The result is burnt paws and diminished ability to cool themselves. She suggests using a cooling vest or simply putting a wet t-shirt on your four-legged pal. Another option is to get him all wet before heading outside. That cooling vest or wet t-shirt should be your companion’s only attire. No

backpacks, doggie couture, etc., she advises, “unless it is a wet item, and then keep it wet.” Continuing on this damp note, Del Re recommends playing in or near water that your dog can enter. Of course, always have water and a drinking bowl with you. Your faithful friend may also welcome cold snacks. Make pup-sicles by stuffing a fillable chew toy with canned dog food, yogurt or pumpkin purée and then freezing it. Alternatively, fill and freeze an ice cube tray with bone broth. For some dogs you just have to scale back outdoor exercise when it’s hot. Pups younger than 17 weeks and seniors shouldn’t be outside long because their bodies can’t deal with excess heat. Toy breeds and dogs with short legs can be at a higher risk for heat stroke, along with brachycephalic dogs with short noses and flat faces. If your canine has a thick coat, keep her indoors rather than getting her sheared. “Shearing is generally not the best plan for most breeds,” notes Del Re. Does your best pal need lots of exercise to work off all his energy? “Take a class with a reputable training facility on how to work your dog mentally to cut down on the need for physical exertion.” By following these recommendations and using good sense, you and your canine companion can be totally chill all summer long.

PHILANTHROPY FOCUS

Made in the Shade

Dr. Daniel and Lurleen Ladd (left) founded to The Shade Project in part to bring shade to school playgrounds, including Gullett Elementary (below).

The National Cancer Institute reports that cancers of the skin—squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and melanoma—are the most common type of cancer in the U.S. While the first two forms are more common, most deaths from skin cancer are caused by melanoma. And the number of skin cancer diagnoses has been rising every year, with diagnosed melanomas on the rise for the past 30 years. Not quite 10 years ago, Dr. Daniel Ladd too noticed with alarm the rising number of skin cancer diagnoses at his dermatology practice, especially among younger patients. Around this same time, his own spouse, Lurleen Ladd, learned she had squamous cell carcinoma. Her diagnosis and successful treatment coupled with Dr. Ladd’s concern for his patients and for people young and old, they launched The Shade Project. “The incidence of skin cancer is so alarming that the Surgeon General issued a call to action regarding the prevention of skin cancer,” says Diane Morgan, executive director of The Shade Project. “Our mission is to save lives by drawing attention to sun safety.” The nonprofit organization’s three core efforts are education, screening and building. Knowledge is power, and The Shade Project is dedicated to spreading knowledge of how to prevent skin

cancer. Schools and organizations of all types can request a guest speaker who can share sun safety tips and explain in age-appropriate language how to prevent skin cancer. A repository of educational resources is also available on its website. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment of skin cancer. To this end, Dr. Ladd and other partner dermatologists routinely offer free skin cancer screening days at a number of medical offices around Central Texas. The organization also helps folks arrange this crucial screening exam by appointment, and even this service is free. Providing shade is the organization’s third effort. Over the years it has raised funds to install shade structures at a number of local elementary school playgrounds and city parks. Among the recipients are Lamar Middle School, Gullett Elementary and the Murchison Pool. Learn more about sun safety and The Shade Project at theshadeproject.org.
