PUBLISHER’S LETTER
As much as I love all the joy and merriment the end-of-the-year holiday season brings, I admit that as soon as it’s all over, I breathe a sigh of relief yet then feel energized and ready to conquer the world as a new year begins and portends new opportunities and adventures. Bring on spring, I say! Bring on the great Austin weather and the springtime social events. Most importantly, bring on the renewed sense of energy and “Let’s do this!” vibe that ensues as the grass turns green, the trees bud and the spectacular wildflowers bloom. Inspiring stuff, for sure! If seeing nature renew itself yet again doesn’t recharge your batteries, I don’t know what will. The magazine’s change of ownership in 2018 has had the same inspiring, re-energizing, “Let’s do this!” effect on the publication. So many exciting things are coming in 2019 to Waterways. One of the
PUBLISHER: Jackie McGrath jackie@waterwaysmagazine.com
biggest changes is our move from quarterly to bimonthly. I am thrilled to announce that starting with this issue you can enjoy reading the magazine six times a year. Since one of my goals as publisher is to provide you with a magazine that’s chockful of useful information, the decision to move to bimonthly was a no-brainer. By going to a bimonthly publication schedule, I have increased our workload by 30 percent. Therefore, I am hiring additional top-notch staff. With that, I’m pleased to introduce you to my newest assistant. Meet Marilyn “Monroe” McGrath, my new right-hand (or whatever hand or foot or pant leg she decides to teeth on) canine. It will be fun to watch her grow along with the magazine. Harness the energy in the spring air, and let’s do this!

Still on Point New Owner for Lakeway Shop Lakeway’s Point of Origin may be a quartercentury old, but new owner Ali Trapp is keeping the boutique fresh and true to its origin: to be the one-stop shop for apparel, home goods and gifts for everyone. To that end self-professed shopaholic Trapp is introducing new products and brands, with a particular focus on locally made items alongside nationally recognized niche brands, such as Ronaldo Designer Jewelry. Owning a boutique has been a lifelong dream for Trapp. To fulfill that dream she convinced her family to move from New Jersey to the Lake Travis area. Says Trapp, “I spent years looking at boutiques to buy or space to open my own. Finally one night I looked at my husband and said, ‘Why not!’ and we went for it without hesitation.” As part of her efforts to be active in her new community, Trapp not only is continuing the store’s tradition of partnering with local charitable and civic organizations but is also expanding outreach efforts by offering, for
Sometimes Embracing Salt Can Be Healthful
Living in the alleged Allergy Capital of the World can be brutal at times. Spending time at Austin Salt Cave might help. Halotherapy is the use of salt—in this case, a dry salt aerosol—to benefit health, particularly respiratory and skin conditions. Owner Jack Cramer became interested in it after visiting a halotherapy facility while on vacation. The salty air helped the native Austinite’s asthma and seasonal allergies, and he decided to open his own halotherapy center at home to help others. “Austin being notorious for year-round allergies was absolutely a factor in the decision to open a salt room here,” says Cramer. He believes his facility can “make a difference in people’s everyday life.” No spelunking is required to reach the salt cave. It’s actually a large room lined with 11 tons of Himalayan salt. Participants in a 45-minute session relax in lounge chairs and breathe in the salt-treated air. The microscopic-size salt particles in theory penetrate deep into lung and skin tissues. The salt’s antibacterial properties deter unhealthful microbes that can contribute to such conditions as asthma, hay fever and psoriasis. Austin Salt Cave is located at 2951 Ranch Road 620 South Suite 102 and at austinsaltcave.com. 14 WATERWAYS | February 2019

AFTER Storybook Gala Fundraiser Helps SAFE Aid Abuse Victims
“Things base and vile, holding no quantity, Love can transpose to form and dignity.”
Deb Corbin, Tiffany Stillwell, Mindy Brown, Ronda Gray
Bob and Gretchen Ellis
Victims of abuse in all its forms can have physical and mental scars from their experiences, and the trauma they suffered can leave them believing themselves to be without worth, without value. With support and love, they can reclaim their lives, their self-esteem, and their dignity. It’s this transposing, transformative work that The SAFE Alliance offers to survivors of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault and exploitation. To continue the organization’s mission to end this violence and to help survivors, the Congressional Ballroom at the Fairmont Austin in early November was transformed into an enchanted forest with twinkling lights, a few wee fairy sprites, flowing gowns and floral crowns, all to raise money to fund this vital work. The SAFE Storybook Gala A Midsummer Night’s Dream began with cocktails, conversation and silent auction bidding, all accompanied by ethereal harp music. Chief 16 WATERWAYS | February 2019

Development Officer Angela Glode and Michael Simons, immediate past chair of SAFE’s board, welcomed attendees as they enjoyed an elegant meal. An all-girls choir from THE ADDERLEY SCHOOL provided entertainment with a medley of show tunes. The live auction after dinner was a rousing affair led for the seventh year by Heath Hale and his team of cowboy auctioneers. Items up for bid included weeklong getaways to a private island in Belize, a private meal at Franklin Barbeque for 20 guests hosted by pitmaster Aaron Franklin himself as well as luxury getaways to Sri Lanka. By the end of the evening, all the event’s fundraising efforts garnered about $1.2 million for the SAFE Children’s Shelter. Victoria Gonzales, the gala’s keynote speaker, made personal the work of SAFE CARES, the organization’s program that supports are survivors of sexual exploitation and trafficking ages 12 and older. Gonzales is a SAFE CARES advocate because she’s a sex trafficking survivor. “I was an object, tossed around and given and taken while my self-esteem was continually shattered,” she shared. “At 15 years old I had been sold to over 200 men,” she revealed, her voice quaking. “Healing happens differently for everyone, but I’m utilizing all the gifts that God gave me to help others to fight the feelings of shame and loss, build self-esteem and find peace.” She shares her story with SAFE CARES clients to help them understand that they have value and deserve “real love.” Gonzales said triumphantly to the roughly 800 attendees, “I’m living proof that human trafficking survivors can and do make it out.” The Storybook Gala also honored Gretchen and Bob Ellis, the 2018 recipients of the Guardian Award. Gretchen had previously served on the boards of SAFE’s founding agencies, Austin Children’s Shelter and SafePlace. She and Bob both have served Austin with years of philanthropic work separately and together. The event finished with the opportunity to take a whirl on the dance floor before the storybook evening came to an end.

Jewelry designer Kendra Scott and Matt Davis, CEO of Davis Spirits Company, kicked off the gala’s program. Shortly thereafter Roddick came onstage to thank everyone and share a few words before presenting Bones with an honorary ARF board member jacket in gratitude for all his work for the organization. Bentley then joined the pair for a brief Q&A that included a few goodnatured jibes. ARF CEO Richard Tagle used his time onstage to share a very personal story. Seeking to author his own life’s story, Tagle left his native Manila at age 16 1/2 to immigrate to the U.S. He settled in San Francisco, attended school at night and worked long hours to pay his expenses. When he became very ill and had no one to call for help, Tagle related, he was the recipient of tremendous kindness from his downstairs neighbor, a stranger to him but who knew his routine so well she noticed his absence and felt compelled to check in on the young man. So inspired was he by

her generosity, he determined the story of his life would be filled helping others. “Kindness is a generous capital, and love is abundant.” He explained that when kindness and love are combined, the dividend is opportunity, which ARF pays to young people “so that they can find their passion, so they can use that passion to alter their minds.” Tagle called this work of paying out that dividend “the most important thing I will ever do.” Generous financial capital was overflowing during the night’s live auction, led by the legendary cowboys of Heath Hale Auctioneers. Items up for bidding included a private dinner for 14 planned by Uchi head chef Tyson Cole as well as a glamorous trip to Los Angeles for four as guests of Brooklyn Decker to attend the filming of the forthcoming sixth season of her Netflix show, Grace and Frankie. When all the bid-wrangling wrapped, ARF had raised more than half a million dollars. The gala ended with a stellar performance by the award-winning Bentley followed by a VIP after-party.

Pas de Deux FOR GOOD Austin Celebs Bust a Move for Children’s Agency For a dozen years respected Austinites have put their reputations on the line—and on the dance floor—all for Travis County kids in crisis. The 12th Annual Dancing with the Star Austin competition took place on the first day of the 12th month of 2018. More than 800 people gathered in the Grand Ballroom at the JW Marriott Austin hotel to cheer on 12 dance couples. The prize? A fantastic trophy complete with a glittery mirror ball along with the pride of knowing they helped raise more than $1.3 million as well as awareness for the Center for Child Protection, the nonprofit organization that assists Travis County children who are suspected victims of neglect and abuse and children who have witnessed violent crimes. Singer-songwriter Kendall Beard McMinn and her partner, professional dancer Tobi Kretschmer, claimed the title of 2018 Dancing with the Stars Austin Champions with their “A Little Party” routine. Coming in second were fitness instructor and advocate Caprice Richards and her professional partner, Albert Tailleur. Third place went to NFL retired strong safety Aaron Williams and his professional partner, Azucena Perez. TV personality Holly Mills-Gardner and choreographer Glenn Ball served as emcees for the evening’s festivities. Being placed in the difficult position of choosing a winner for the competition were local celebrity judges Brad Booker, Sara Osburn and Alex Franco, the hosts of Mix 94.7’s morning show. No charity gala would be complete without a live auction facilitated by the cowboys of Heath Hale Auctioneers. In honor of the glitzy night, Heath Hale donned a black sequin jacket that sparkled under the lights as he and his bid wranglers put on a show. The winners of the 2018 Luxury Car Raffle were drawn as part of the evening’s program. The grand prize was a 2018 Lexus RX 350, provide by Lexus of Austin and Lakeway. The second prize was a $2,500 gift card to HEB, just in time for shopping for holiday feasts and celebrations. Two round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines were awarded as the third prize. The evening ended with a dance party so that all attendees could take a spin on the dance floor—and perhaps fantasize about winning the coveted mirror ball trophy one day. 26 WATERWAYS | February 2019

SXSW Style Make a Sartorial Splash at Austin’s Premier Event By Liz Feezor Professional stylist and native Austinite Raquel Greer Gordian knows how to effortlessly and stylishly navigate the bustling South by Southwest experience. This annual event is her time to shine as she pulls out all the stops to create killer looks for clients attending it. “SXSW has become this magnetic event for creative people around the world. It’s one of the most interesting times to watch fashion in Austin because you see what’s happening in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and that influences us here in Texas.” Her number-one style tip for SXSW? “Don’t be afraid to get eclectic!” she advises. “You will come across thousands of people from different ages, professions, and geographies. It’s the perfect

opportunity to get creative in your closet and experiment with your look.” Gordian has created four looks to inspire Waterways readers to make their own chic mark on this year’s 10-day affair.
SXSW CONFERENCE The daytime is filled with panel discussions, keynote addresses and networking opportunities galore, so minimalist, intentional clothing choices fit the bill. A mock turtleneck bodysuit paired with a high-waisted trouser creates a modern, streamlined silhouette. A snakeskin block-heel shoe gives the look a Western edge befitting SXSW’s Texas roots. “You want to convey that >>

SXSW is the perfect opportunity to get creative in your closet and experiment with your look. you’re forward-thinking, and you express that visually by being fashion-forward,” Gordian explains. The evenings include more networking events as well as parties, so comfort is key. “You also want to be expressive, creating a look with pieces that will start a conversation with the person next to you.” High-waisted denim in a light wash worn with a punchy graphic tee, a smart sneaker and an armful of bangles and other eclectic jewelry creates a look that’s a true departure from daytime but is still event-appropriate.
SXSW is known for its music festival—and the notoriously unpredictable mid-March weather. Gordian therefore stresses layering. “You want to be prepared for anything.” With that goal in mind, she grounds her daytime music outfit with a leather boyfriend vest, which provides a bit of coverage and goes easily over any lightweight top, such as a classic band tee. Ripped jean shorts add a sexier element to a rock n’ roll-inspired ensemble should the temperature be summer-like, and distressed jeans work just as well for cooler weather. A closed-toe shoe is a must for navigating crowds and walking between shows, so a cowboy or moto boot can be a great choice. Add a pair of oversized hoop earrings to finish the look. Nighttime SXSW concerts are a see-and-be-seen affair, sod a look with a definite edge is a must. To achieve that goal, Gordian uses a leather fringe miniskirt as her showpiece. A trapeze top in a bold color stands out in a crowd, and a bright-colored shoe that complements the top creates a memorable look that pops. Work in PROGRESS Amanda Tatom in her own words on the search for what’s next
Gradually the job part is taking direction with a variety of freelance work. I have ongoing projects in fashion, TV, radio, print and brand ambassadorship. I continue to share pretty openly on my blog and social media about everything from morning carpool runs to dating again to faith to hitting a holiday funk. I try not to hold back. The feelings and emotions connect us, and talking about them is not a problem for me.
Epiphanies Happen That leads me to the common thread that runs through many of my Facebook and Instagram posts along with most interviews or talks I have given and every prayer I send up. Purpose. We are all searching for it. We all want it. But how the heck do we find it? I mean, I’m 44 for goodness sake. Shouldn’t I be well aware and locked into this purpose thing? I’m a recovering type A control freak, so not having an official purpose really puts a bee in my bonnet. Sticks in my craw. Funny enough, therein is where I found my true purpose. Somewhere between my bonnet and my craw, spinning all over the place, I could see it evolving and taking shape.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TYLER SCHMITT/THE MILL PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO. APPAREL COURTESY OF LEAGUE OF REBELS (THIS PAGE) AND ESTILO BOUTIQUE.
I left my job in daytime TV last August without a plan and without another job lined up. It was a leap of faith, but I knew one thing for sure: This change would give me precious time with my girls as they started a new school year. Then I would figure out the rest. Five months later I am still figuring it out. But aren’t we all? (Please say yes. If you in fact do have it all figured out, don’t tell me yet. I need to feel like I’m not alone in this.)
I think my purpose is to be OK with not having a purpose while never giving up on searching for it. I search for it in the joys, the triumphs, the days you get the kids to school not just on time but early. I search for it in the career changes, the divorce, the loss, the uprooting, the kids, the dating, the constant figuring it all out. Life only keeps coming. Whether wonderful or wild, it keeps showing up. It will only keep throwing us for a loop.
Connection and Comfort Along with the constant ups and downs are the God winks. The little nudges from the universe that sharing and caring and talking and not hiding my feelings but letting them be, sitting with them and then learning from them as I move forward is what it’s all about. The mountains behind me I have climbed so that I can help someone facing a similar mountain. I have felt pain so that I can relate to others’ pain and reassure them through it. I have accomplished achievements so that I can show someone else that yes, a single mom in her 40s who had barely ever taken the trash out can run a household and keep everyone under her roof alive and happy. I am well aware I am not curing any diseases or solving the world’s problems. I am but one semi-silly woman-child with lash extensions and a propensity for sparkles and shoes living one day at a time. I happened to have my own TV show for a few years, and it connected me with a lot of people and gave me a public platform to use. And that’s the key: how I use it. I am able to highlight businesses and people and organizations and places that help others. I want you to know what to expect when you have something done, when you dine somewhere, when you spend your hardearned money on something. I want you to know that the people behind the business are kind, work hard and care about community, customer service and making people feel better even if just a few moments or hours. And I want you to know why I go, buy or do these things. To feel better. To look better. To be better. My insecurities have turned out to be my strengths. By sharing what makes me nervous or anxious or sad or weird, so many of you have shared the same with me. Knowing we are all in it together is what connects us and makes me feel better and keeps me striving to keep purpose at the forefront of all I do. For myself. For my daughters. For those who might look to me as a source of comfort or inspiration or just as someone to relate to on some level. There is purpose in the struggle. There is purpose in the celebration. There is purpose in the progress. Keep up with Amanda’s adventures and discoveries on her blog at adlibbinglife.com and on Instagram.

Life of the Party Realizing one dream didn’t quite pan out for Jordan Jones, so she had another one. In 2013 at age 23, Jones left Dallas to fulfill her dream of living in San Francisco. However, she found herself struggling with a marketing job she didn’t enjoy much and the daunting task of making friends in a new city. One night she called home and shared these woes with her mom, who responded like a tried and true Texas woman. “She was like, ‘You’re having a pity party for yourself,’” Jones recalls. “’I love you, but we’re not doing this.’” That night Jones dreamed she sent herself a pity party package—and Packed Party was born. The company started out selling party-for-one care packages. Now in some 5,000 stores worldwide, its products help make life a party, such as confetti-festooned office supplies, festive bags and novelty drinkware, including its signature disco ball-shaped adult sippy cup. In 2016 Packed Party relocated to Austin and opened a pop-up shop on South Congress last year. “To be able to be a part of people’s big moments and not even know it is something I can’t put into words.” Packed Party has allowed the entrepreneuse to return to her lifelong love for design. Upon realizing how frequently she asked suppliers to tweak items, Jones began designing and making her own products. “I think having the ability to design products that bring so much joy to women, that encourage them to celebrate the little things every day and then give to one another, that’s really been the most rewarding part of my job.” Jones parlayed her marketing background into social media success for Packed Party. Its popularity

on Instagram and other outlets has led to partnerships with Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James and the Dallas Cowboys, among others. Her success is also attracting investors aiming to fund women blazing trails in business. “To have a business during this time when so many other females are starting businesses and cheering one another on, I think it’s an amazing time.” Jones is not only excited to be part of this movement but is also quick to honor the women who have mentored her. “So much of my success I can contribute to women I’ve met along the way that have given me advice or a kick in the butt or whatever it was I needed at the time.” —Lindsay Whelchel Packed Party’s merchandise is available at packedparty.com and in stores such as Neiman Marcus and Dillard’s.

Kathy Terry is a giver. She frequently volunteers with Little Helping Hands, SAFE Alliance’s Strong Start program and other organizations. Each quarter she and husband Patrick donate one Saturday’s profits from all 15 of their P. Terry’s Burger Stand locations to an Austin-area nonprofit. This philanthropy passion she developed while globetrotting in her 20s and 30s and witnessing so many in need but also so many readily offering compassion. “I was taken in by countless families who gave me so much when they had nothing,” Terry recalls. As a result her values and priorities shifted. “I started thinking differently about the way I wanted to give and show support.” During this time she conceived the idea for a mobile app to make donating to charities easier. However, Terry didn’t start developing her inLieu app in earnest until she found herself repeatedly wondering what to give friends who wanted for nothing. “I wanted to present news in a way that’s attractive and not alienating,” she explains, “and then supply the sources so someone’s never wondering, Where did she get that information? I’m transparent about it.” Lee notes that SmartHER News seeks to represent both sides of a debate while remaining professional, respectful and conscious of the tone. “Whatever you feel about an issue or speaker is up to you,” she says. “I respect your opinion enough not to try to tell you how to feel about it.” The site’s content covers a variety of topics, not just politics and current events. “It offers high-variety, high-quality morsels of information you can read through quickly.” SmartHER News may be inspired by and seeks to serve today’s woman, but Lee has discovered the website has universal appeal. “I’ve found that when you build something for women, men really like it, too, and SmartHER News has that.”
News Gets SmartHER Information about current events is available practically anywhere anytime. Unfortunately, along with it is a glut of opinion and even outright disinformation. Sorting out which is which can be tough, more so when the news consumer hasn’t much time. This is especially true for women juggling the demands of a career, family and household. Jenna Lee, a journalist and former Fox News Channel anchor, understands this dilemma. “Consuming the news is difficult because it’s hard to get the facts and learn the truth,” she shares. “I dreamt about starting a news platform to better serve women because the American woman’s life has changed so dramatically in the past 50 years, but the way we deliver news to her hasn’t.” Thus she founded SmartHER News. The news website aims to meet the needs of the modern woman and the public at large. Instead of traditional articles, visitors view Instagram-inspired notecards that contain bulleted key facts about an event or topic. as a gathering place where people can connect, learn and build relationships. It regularly hosts girls’ night out parties, workshops with craftspeople, book signings, culinary tastings, yoga and other activities. Individuals and groups can even rent part or all of the store. “Making friends is our business” has long been the Busch family motto, and Busch Transou has taken it to heart—and soul. Hearth and Soul is located in Casis Village at 2727 Exposition Boulevard and at hearthandsoul.com. STORE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN PORTER; PORTRAIT COURTESY OF HEARTH AND SOUL
“Don’t ever be afraid to ask,” Susie Busch Transou once advised. “You never know what doors will open because of that. That’s the philosophy that I’ve always taken.” A direct descendent of Anheuser-Busch cofounder Adolphus Busch, she first enjoyed much success heading the brewery’s marketing and hospitality services. For the past 20+ years, she and husband Tripp have operated a successful beverage distributorship. More recently Busch Transou found that answering a question led to her next business venture: Hearth and Soul, a boutique-cum-community center. She opened an Austin location in November 2018. What feeds your soul? That question was put to her a few years ago when she attended a getaway celebration for a dear friend’s 50th birthday. Busch Transou didn’t shrug it off as some exercise in midlife navel-gazing. She seriously pondered the question and her answer. She asked it of her friends. And kept asking it of herself. Less than a year later, in late summer 2015, she opened the first Heart and Soul in her hometown of Tallahassee. Hearth and Soul is more than an upscale boutique that offers unique apparel and accessories, home goods, foodstuffs and other items. It’s an embodiment of what feeds its founder’s soul: connecting people, solving problems, learning, building relationships and being surrounded by classic, simple, meaningful, beautiful things. Being with family is also soul food for the proprietress. After her eldest son moved to Austin, she came to love the city, set up a second home here and decided Tarrytown was perfect for a second Hearth and Soul. The store’s design is akin to Busch Transou opening her home to all comers. Laid out like a house, it has all the rooms and designated spaces of a house. Each room is appointed with products befitting its purpose. Fittingly, this house has no interior doors so visitors feel all the more welcome. Along with the beautiful, meaningful things Hearth and Soul sells, it offers another helping of soul food by serving

is darker, select a corrector with a deeper orange base. Another option is a concealer that has a warmer tone and is dark enough to conceal. Avoid concealers that are very light and bright. Using a concealer that is too light is like wearing white pantyhose over a bruise: You aren’t fooling anyone. If you like that highlighted look under the eye, you can always add a touch of one on top to brighten.
Do I need to use a primer before applying foundation? Primers vary widely in their benefits and effectiveness. It’s worth trying one if you aren’t happy with the way your foundation wears—if it gets too shiny or doesn’t last long. If your foundation looks too flat, some primers can help you achieve a subtle glow. Other primers add a layer of oil control. I find some foundations work well without a primer and others are greatly enhanced with one. I recommend first determining what you’d like to improve about your skin or foundation and then ensuring the primer you try is designed to address that issue.
Is it better to apply concealer with a fingertip, brush or sponge? I find a damp sponge gives the best, most natural finish. My tool of choice for concealer is a damp Beautyblender® sponge. Because concealer is the heaviest product of a makeup routine, do not apply too much or else risk a heavy look. A damp sponge mitigates that risk because it absorbs any excess concealer and helps blend it. The key is soaking the sponge and then squeezing all the water out. Your sponge should be damp but light and bouncy.
What is the best way to conceal dark circles under my eyes? Depending on how dark the undereye area is, you may need to enlist an orange-based color corrector that is the right shade for your skin tone to neutralize the blue and green hues that make the skin under the eye look dark. A light peach shade works well for fair skin tones. If your skin tone
What is the difference between bronzer and contour? Contouring products have a matte finish with a cool tone and should be a few shades deeper than your skin tone so you can better define the dimensions of your face. Use a contour to enhance cheekbones, refine the nose or create more of an upper eyelid crease. Bronzer, on the other hand,

Should I change my skincare during the winter? Absolutely if you notice your skin change! For a lot of us, our skin changes during these colder, drier months. If your skin becomes more dehydrated, try swapping out lighter lotions for more emollient-rich moisturizers. Switching from a gel cleanser to a cream cleanser can also help skin retain moisture.
11 Tons of Pink Himalayan Salt!
Here at the Austin Salt Cave, we do what’s called Halotherapy. During our 45-minuteHalotherapy sessions, we’re pumping salt infused air into the salt room. The whole time you’re breathing in minuscule salt particles, coating the entirety of your respiratory tract as well as getting it on your skin. The salt then draws moisture to it, reducing inflammation in the respiratory tract and on the skin. Extra fluid pulled into the lungs thins out mucus, allowing it to be more easily expelled. On top of all that, salt is antimicrobial! We are located behind The Grove in Lakeway. 2951 RANCH ROAD 620 S SUITE 102, LAKEWAY, TX 78738 • (512) 838-6545 • AUSTINSALTCAVE.COM

simply gives skin a sun-kissed look. Some bronzers have a bit of shimmer, which can help give your face a certain glow. Should I apply my eye makeup before or after my foundation? This is really a personal preference. However, if your eyeshadow often falls onto your face when you apply it, then doing your eyes first might be best. You can get messy as you apply your eye makeup, and then just wipe your face before applying your concealer and foundation.
For a lot of us, our skin changes during these colder, drier months. If your skin becomes more dehydrated, try swapping out lighter lotions for more emollient-rich moisturizers.
How do I choose the right makeup brush? What’s the difference between synthetic and natural fibers? In general the denser the brush toe (that’s the collection of bristles at the end of the brush), the more product it can pick up. The lighter, longer and fluffier the brush toe, the better it can blend. For example, when you are packing color on the lid, use a brush with short, dense bristles. When blending the eyelid crease, opt for something with longer, softer fibers. Natural bristles are from animals, typically squirrel, sable and goat. Synthetic bristles are man-made fibers. Synthetic bristles don’t absorb as well as natural, so they’re great for cream and liquid products. Natural bristles are typically better for eye makeup because their porous fibers pick up more powder. How do you keep lipstick from migrating into lines around the lips? I’ve found some great lip primers that help seal the lip line, such as FACE Atelier’s Lip Lock. You can also apply face powder around the lip line with a very fine small brush. Lips primers and face powder both form a barrier against migrating lipstick or gloss. Applying lip liner can also help prevent this problem. Pillows, pillows and more pillows Use pillows as jewelry for a room. Give sofas, chairs and beds a fresh look with this simple change. Consider changing pillows with the seasons just like you do with your wardrobe. Let them reflect the colors of the current season. In addition to changing out colors, bring in a favorite new print to serve as your anchor. Don’t be afraid to mix prints in a fun way to give the room a punch. You can also experiment with fabric textures. By mixing linens, silks, velvets and other types of fabric, you can give a room an updated, fresh look.
Art-ful éclat A new or new-to-the-space artwork can give a room a whole new attitude. Hang the piece on a big wall for a bold statement, or place it in a corner nook for an enchanting surprise. Even if everything else stays the same, this one change can make a big impact and give a room a conversation point.
Little touches Whether you switch up existing ones or buy new, changing up the accessories you display in a room can shift its mood. For example, set out new coffee table books with light-color cover art to help make the living room seem brighter and more airy in advance of springtime. Add freshness to any space by placing objets d’art, some potted orchids, preserved boxwood balls in eye-catching containers or even antique dough bowl filled with lemons on tables, kitchen islands, consoles or shelves.
If you’re tired of living in neutral, light spaces that have been popular for so long, here’s great news: Colors are once again a big trend for room décor. Want a can’t-fail way to bring life to a neutral space? Go green! Green velvet pillows add a vivacious pop of color on a white or neutral sofa, and maybe toss out another pillow or two covered in a fresh print with one or more shades of green as the key color. A wooden dough bowl full of boxwood greens is evocative of a tree with all its leaves freshly unfurled. Add a coffee table book or two with bright colors, and you’ve brought a spark of life to any room. You can take a room refresh to the next level by rolling a fresh coat of paint onto the walls. Your local home improvement store has scads of paint chips from which to choose, and many of them have the means of analyzing the color of a fabric swatch, a flower petal or just about any item you bring in with a spectrophotometer so that you can have paint mixed to match the color of that item. The restaurant works with party hosts to customize the menu to satisfy guests’ tastes and dietary restrictions. There’s a lot to know about wine, and knowing the difference, for example, between pinot noir and merlot may not help when browsing a store’s large selection of wines from around world or looking at a restaurant’s extensive wine list. Fortunately for folks who aren’t oenophiles, many wine stewards, also called sommeliers, are happy to share their wine expertise to help educate wannabe connoisseurs at private gatherings. The Sommelier Company offers a range of sommelier-led experiences, including food and wine pairing dinners, wine-tasting parties and classes covering a range of wine-related topics. Helping, Healing Hands
Quasquicentennial Agency Champions Kids Needing Families
What began with an effort to help one baby has now some 125 years later changed the lives of thousands of children in the Austin area. Helping Hand Home for Children is Travis County’s oldest continuously operating residential childcare agency. It began in 1893 when a group of women came together to share the parenting of a newborn girl found at Austin’s railroad station. As more babies were brought to them for care, the women bought a cottage for housing and caring for the children until they could be united with biological or adoptive families. Today, the organization not only operates foster care and adoption programs but is also a safe haven for kids healing from trauma by offering residential therapeutic treatment and family support programs. Each year it places some 145 children into homes through its foster care and adoption programs. Children in its programs participate in a variety of activities, including sports as well as music, art and language lessons. These opportunities not only help the kids learn and enjoy being kids but also help advance their recovery and help them learn to trust adults. “I would not be the person I am today without the love and support of the men and women who sacrificed their time and gave financially out of an abundance of the heart,”

MY AUSTIN
Favorite things about Austin, by some of its notable locals
AMANDA TATOM Amanda Tatom is a familiar face to many, having hosted KXAN’s Studio 512 from its start in 2014 until departing in 2018. Her daily goal is to show her three daughters that a woman can be whoever she wants no matter her age or the cards she’s been dealt— and chronicles it all on her blog, Adlibbing Life. In 2019 Tatom is realizing a dream by designing a women’s capsule collection for Austin’s own League of Rebels.
