PUBLISHER’S LETTER It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year…. Are you ready for all the hustle and bustle and mixing and mingling? Are you ready to spread holiday cheer? Are you ready to set your new year’s resolutions? Ready or not, the season is upon us. Time to tackle the holiday season. Time to reflect on all we are thankful for and all we have accomplished. Time to remember what and whom we hold dear. I think for many people the holidays are a time to which we look forward with great

anticipation and a smidge of apprehension. I have to admit that I’d be in type A personality, I burn the candle at both ends on a normal day, so adding the holiday busyness can max my stress in record time. The good thing and the bad thing about the holiday season, I’ve learned over the years, is that it’ll arrive much too soon and be over and done before a lot of us probably get a chance to tell all the people in our lives how important they are and how thankful we are to have them in our family, in our circle. So before I get too far into my own holiday fervor, I want to take this

I couldn’t and wouldn’t want to do this without any of you. You make me look good! To my husband Drew and my beloved pack of pups, I love you all to the moon and back! You make my heart sing each and every day. Onward and upwards my friends! Cheers to 2020! Let’s live it up in West Austin style!

2018 Home Builders Association Custom Builder of the Year, Arbogast Homes is a boutique custom homebuilder committed to absolute client satisfaction. Accepting only a limited number of clients per year, Tod Arbogast insists on being personally involved in every home he builds. Exquisite craftsmanship, attention to detail and building with integrity are cornerstones of his company. With well over a decade in residential construction as well as a valuable background in commercial construction, Tod and his team deliver superior quality and outstanding service every time.

BUILDING EXCELLENCE IN CENTRAL TEXAS FOR MORE THAN A DECADE

A CUT ABOVE THE REST There are any number of custom home builders in Austin that build exceptional houses – Tod is certainly one of those – but what sets Tod apart is his focus on the client. We moved into our Arbogast Custom Home in the summer of 2016. It was a pleasure working with Tod at every step in the process. Tod was personally involved and our satisfaction was always the top priority. Tod and his team were professional, courteous, honest and knowledgeable. Visually, there is no denying the quality of construction and finish of our house. What we didn’t expect was how quiet and efficient the house would be. The windows, doors, spray foam, HVAC system, and tank-less water heaters reduced our energy consumption by 2/3 – even though the house is larger than our previous one. As I said in the beginning, while the product is exceptional, it’s Tod’s engagement and focus on the client’s experience that sets him apart. Ultimately, Tod didn’t build a house – he built our home. A home we will enjoy for many years to come. Thank you Tod!” -Brad Harwell

Lights! Camera! Action! Film Festival Puts Lake Travis on the Marquee Don’t call it a prelude to South by Southwest. The Lake Travis Film Festival takes place February 27 through March 1 at a variety of locations in its namesake area. Filmmaker and Bee Cave resident Kat Albert is the driving force behind the festival. “Our goal is to enrich cinephilia and cultural awareness Arbogast’s 2020 Parade of Homes design

within our community, using the backdrop of gorgeous terrain to inspire up-and-coming creatives.” The festival will also give local filmmakers an opportunity to find an audience and highlight to the entertainment industry the many filming venues and opportunities the Lake Travis area offers. The schedule includes a number of screenings, industry discussion panels and parties. One highlight of the event is the Where the Stars Shine awards banquet on February 29th, at Sonesta Bee Cave Austin Hotel. Awards will go to the best feature-length film, best documentary, best Texas film, best

who have stepped up to help lay the groundwork and work

The Home Builders Association of Greater Austin has selected

the four-day festival.”

The Reserve at Lake Travis as the site for its 2020 Greater Austin Parade of Homes, and Arbogast Custom Homes is one of a select group of homebuilders constructing a residence for it. The theme for Arbogast’s 3,539 square-foot residence is “We are Family.” It’s tailored for lake living and for bringing families together and making memories. With four bedrooms, four full baths and one half-bath, the home is designed around three master suites, with a large bunk area for kids. “For the Parade of Homes we thought it was important to showcase a home where buyers can host their family and friends amongst the beautiful setting, thus the theme ‘We are Family,’” said Tod Arbogast. “Emphasis was placed on outdoor living with a luxurious pool, multiple patios, a dedicated grill area as well as a bocce ball court. “We are excited for Parade of Homes attendees to tour this elegant property, ‘right-sized’ for today’s home buyers.” The 2020 Greater Austin Parade of Homes takes place June 13–15, June 19–21 and June 26–28. Helping Hand Home for Children, Travis County’s oldest continuously operating residential childcare agency, hosted its 20th annual Champions for Children luncheon and awards presentation in early October. The organization is a safe haven for kids healing from trauma. It offers residential therapeutic treatment and family support programs as well as operates foster care and adoption programs. Each year it places some 145 children into homes through its foster care and adoption programs. Last year volunteers put in more than 11,200 hours of service. The hard work and dedication of these volunteers and caregivers were honored by the attendees at this year’s event, held at the JW Marriott. This year’s community honorees are Chrystal Smith, founder of Foster Village; Albert L. Black, executive director of Child Inc.; Kristin Finan, cofounder, president and CEO of Carrying Hope; and The Charlotte and Craig Benson Family & Beyond Batten Disease Foundation. A special award was presented to this year’s philanthropic honorees, Adria and Brian Sheth. Through their Sheth Sangreal Foundation, the couple supports not only Helping Hand Home for Children but also The SAFE Alliance, The Boys and Girls Club of Austin, the Waller Creek Conservancy and several other organizations in the Austin area. The luncheon’s featured speakers was Christina Meredith, author of CinderGirl: My Journey Out of the Ashes to a Life of Hope. A survivor of sexual, mental and emotional abuse, trauma, poverty and homelessness, she shared how she found the strength and support she need to triumph in the face of adversity to forge a life committed to helping others.

HOUNDS A ranch house for Rover? Maybe a bungalow for Bowser? The 15th annual Barkitecture Austin, hosted by Animal Lovers of Austin, Inc., took place at the end of October. The event sees local architects, builders and interior designers team up to build one-of-a-kind doghouses that are far from your typical doghouse. This year’s participants included Meredith Owen Interiors, Jauregui Architect, Balfour Beatty Construction and Cedar Ridge High School Design Studio. The showcase held at Fair Market not only allowed the public to view the cutting-edge canine cribs but also included a doggie costume contest and the BarkLounge, where two-legged and four-legged attendees could relax and enjoy treats. Attendees could also vote for their favorite construction, and a panel of judges awarded prizes in a number of categories, including Best in Show, Keep Austin Woof as well as Best Urban and PEED (Sustainable), a unique take on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) designation for eco-friendly buildings. Proceeds from the doghouse auctions benefit Austin Pets Alive!, Lone Star Doberman Rescue and Safe in Austin. 22 WATERWAYS | December 2019

Reaching for the Stars GoFundMe campaigns and pleas for financial assistance on social media platforms to cover health care costs have unfortunately become commonplace. For Austin-area families grappling with how to pay for the vital therapy services for their children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, there’s Imagine A Way. The nonprofit organization sponsors children ages 2 through 6 whose parents are underinsured or uninsured. In 2019 the nonprofit organization sponsored nearly 30 children. The cost of applied behavior analysis, considered to be the 24 WATERWAYS | December 2019

To continue its work, Imagine A Way held its eighth annual gala in early October at the InterContinental Stephen F. Austin hotel. The 300 attendees at the sold-out event took part in a silent auction and raffle as well as a live auction and dined on a delicious supper. In early November The Austin 20 hosted A Night for Nicole’s Place at the Texas Disposal Exotic Game Ranch in Buda. The event included cocktails, dinner from Jack Allen’s Kitchen, performances by Kelly Willis and Bruce Robinson and a raffle of items donated by Robin Hancock Fine Jewelers. Nicole’s Place is a planned temporary sanctuary for female victims of domestic sex trafficking ages 11 to 17. Not long after the fundraiser, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to mark the start of construction on the first two cottages on the campus, which will house up to 10 girls. The goal is to eventually build enough cottages to house up to 40 young women. The facility will also provide other support and services to help them recover and rebuild their lives. The facility is the result of a partnership between Upbring, an organization with more than 135 years’ experience helping victims of child abuse and trauma, and The Austin 20, a local grassroots organization working to end domestic sex trafficking of minors. The LBJ Move Aside, LBD! The Little Black Jacket Is Your New Go-To By Lisa Sikora

Design Options Galore The design of an LBJ can greatly enhance its utility. A jacket’s fabric, length, sleeve and collar are all aspects that can help you wear it like a high-fashion pro. The key quality of any LBJ is its fabric. The fabric determines how the garment hangs on you, and fabric quality impacts the lifespan of the garment. It also is a factor in >> 38 WATERWAYS | December 2019

A little black jacket (LBJ) is a wonderful asset to any wardrobe. The options for wearing it are many thanks to its versatility, and the variety of LBJ styles are seemingly endless. Whether you’re reaching for an LBJ that’s already in your closet or one that’s hanging on a boutique rack that you’re considering adding to your arsenal, keep in mind a few points so that you can pull together a look that works for you: • Own your look. Be authentic and wear what works for you. • Don’t be afraid to break fashion “rules.” Wear classic with the unexpected. Pair that LBJ with a vibrant color or pattern, or pair it with an eye-catching accessory. • The LBJ can complete a classic casual look. Pair it with a perfectly cut pair of jeans and a crisp, white button-up shirt. Remember that elegance is found in the unseen and subtle. • The LBJ can be really casual. Wear it with a t-shirt and shorts. • For all its darkness, the LBJ can be soft and feminine. This is especially true when you wear it with a dress. Don’t limit yourself to pairing it only with solids. Go for that bold floral print, or strike a strong note of contrasts by teaming it with lace.

STYLE FILE when and how you can wear the jacket. For example, a satin tuxedo jacket adds a dramatic flair to any outfit. Combine it with jeans and a white button-up shirt and knee-high black boots for an elegant yet unexpected ensemble. Consider too an LBJ made from a water-resistant fabric, making it both fashionable and functional. To demonstrate how important fabric is, let’s consider an LBJ made of a lovely unlined cashmere blend. Cashmere blends travel well because they don’t wrinkle and keep you warm. However, that cashmere blend fabric that keeps you warm can be a detriment thanks to Central Texas weather, so you’d likely only be able to wear it in fall and winter. The length of an LBJ offers awesome silhouette possibilities. For example, a short LBJ worn over a dress can change the whole look of the ensemble. You can even pair a short LBJ over a tunic with leggings for added dimension. An LBJ with a hem that falls below the hips offers many styling options too. Whether you pair it with a t-shirt, ripped jeans and flats or with a satin blouse and houndstooth pants, your look will be a powerful one. A black capelet can be paired with a dress for an elegant evening look. For a more Austin-type look, dress up your favorite t-shirt and colored jeans with high-tops and a black capelet. The design of the sleeves and the collar can each add an eye-catching element of fun or drama to an LBJ. An LBJ with three-quarters sleeves is a flattering option. If your go-to LBJ has long sleeves but you want a change of pace, roll up the sleeves to achieve the same effect. The right collar can frame your face and have a dramatic impact. Highlight your beautiful face by pairing a black wrap jacket and adding a pop of color with a scarf. LBJs with lapels frame your face and dress up any simple neckline. Even a jacket sans lapels can bring the drama because you can then draw focus to a scarf, bowtie or statement necklace.

GET THIS LOOK

A huge thank you to Amanda Tatom for helping us out in giving you the best and easiest hair updo! Making you stand out at all of your Holiday parties!

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON SHOW UP WITH THE MOST GLAMOROUS DIY UPDO. EVERYONE WILL BE ASKING “HOW DID YOU DO THAT?”

How to Get This Look SUPPLIES • 3 clear hair ties, bobby pins, hair spray and we love a good shine spray! ! (We love Unite Glossing spray)

FOURTH STEP • Part the hair in two, including the ponytail and make two braids. FIFTH STEP • Take right braid and fold it to the left side tucking the end of the braid and using bobby pins to secure it’s hold. It took me about 3 bobby pins, depending on hair’s thickness! SIXTH STEP • Take left side and pull it to the right folding the tail under. Pull it lower than the other braid so it makes a balanced updo on each side. Securing with bobby pins.

Starting with clean or dry hair... sometimes it’s easier when it’s second day hair and may hold better. FIRST STEP • Curl your hair, it adds some texture that helps hold the style! SECOND STEP • Put your hair half-up and secure with a clear hair tie. THIRD STEP • Make a topsy tail half-up ponytail. Taking the ponytail through the middle and pulling down.

SEVENTH STEP • Pull and expand the braid to your liking, securing it with more bobby pins if needed. You can pull at the top for more volume and pulling pieces around faces for some fun! Spray with some shine spray for glitz and freeze the style with some hair spray (we love Kevin Murphy Session spray)! Add a fun hair clip for some extra bling perfect for the Holidays! We have a huge variety sold in salon, come and choose the perfect one for you!

Beauty Brush Up Makeup Guru Lisa Jauregui Launches Own Line of Brushes Makeup vlogger and regular Waterways beauty columnist Lisa Jauregui has added entrepreneur to her résumé. The one-time M•A•C cosmetics trainer in July 2019 launched BK Beauty to sell the line of makeup brushes she designed from her many years of makeup application experience. Here she gives Waterways readers the inside scoop on her new endeavor. A great makeup application starts with the right brushes. Brushes are your tools for creating the perfect makeup look, so you need brushes that help you achieve the look you want, whether it’s a natural, sheer application or one with strong definition and loads of glamour. From the size and shape of the brush head to the fiber of the hair, makeup brushes all perform different tasks and, depending on the quality, perform differently. For that reason a shopper can be overwhelmed when staring at a display full of different shapes and sizes but not knowing what to buy. But if you understand the basics of brush performance, you’ll be armed with the knowledge you need to select exactly what you need. 60 WATERWAYS | December 2019

Heady Considerations Let’s start with the length and shape of the brush head. Long, fluffy brush heads are ideal for blending products and applying them for a sheer natural finish. This type is ideal for loose powders, pigmented blush, bronzers, shadows that you apply in your crease and other products generally applied in a soft, natural approach. On the other hand, brushes that have shorter, denser fibers are generally great for applying more color or achieving more coverage with such products as foundations, concealers and shadow applied to the eyelid. The brush fiber is equally important for getting the perfect application. Natural animal hair and synthetic blends are two options. Natural hair is more porous, so these fibers pick up powder products very well, and synthetic fibers are great for creams and liquid-based products. However, the quality of both natural fibers and synthetic fibers can vary considerably in quality. Fortunately, as the vegan, cruelty-free beauty movement has more brands shifting from natural to synthetic fibers, the quality of synthetic fibers is improving as a result. Care Quality brushes should last you years and will if you clean them regularly and with care. When you wash them, soak >>

THE BK BRUSH LINEUP only the brush hair in water. Avoid soaking the ferrule and handle in water as that can damage the adhesive used to glue the two together and also ruin the lacquer on the handle. Use a brush cleanser to ensure all the cosmetic product is removed from the brush hair. After rinsing, gently squeeze any excess water from the hair, and then lay each brush flat on a towel to dry overnight.

I’m proud that BK Beauty brushes are made with 100% vegan premium synthetic fiber. I’m also proud that BK Beauty donates 10% of all profits to The Kindness Campaign (TKC), the Austin-based nonprofit organization that creates curriculum for schools to help students develop empathy and self-acceptance. I set out to build a brand with a passion for beauty and a mission of kindness. I want to build a brand that’s focused as much on inner beauty as outer beauty. TKC and its work aligns with these goals, and I’m so pleased that just three weeks after its launch, BK Beauty made its first donation to TKC of $10,000. 62 WATERWAYS | December 2019

FOR THE HOME

The Gift of Space Organize and Declutter Your Home for the Holidays By Shelley Seale

The holiday season for many of us means decorating our homes, maybe buying new decorations to augment or replace what we already have, as well as the giving and receiving of gifts. And let’s not forget the great bargains we score on Black Friday and those after-Christmas sales. All this means that now is the perfect time to think about home organization. A little planning and a few resources can go a long way toward keeping your household in order during the rush and chaos of this time of year as well as making

TAMING THE DECORATIONS The holiday season is the perfect transition period, says professional organizer Melynda Weiland. “Decorations are pulled out, things are rearranged to accommodate them. Schedules are assessed to make way for events and added to to-do lists and our homes become more of a focus. These are all perfect scenarios to review, declutter and be intentional with our space.” Weiland, owner of Order to Everything (ordertoeverything.com), suggests that as you begin decorating for the holidays, you should review items as you pull them out

space for those new acquisitions.

mas, blue for Hanukkah, white for New Year’s Eve and orange for Halloween, for example. She and Weiland both suggest storing your regular household items in the decoration containers while the seasonal décor is out.

KEEPING ORGANIZED INTO THE NEW YEAR

and assess if you really use and want them. When the time comes to take decorations down, look at them again and consider your space before putting them away to determine if you need to discard some items to have order rather than clutter. “As we focus on our homes to clean for company or even making holiday meals, we can use it as an opportunity to take inventory of what is bothering us and what needs to be done to fix our pain points,” Weiland adds. This process can also help prepare your home organization goals for next year and set you up for success. She says that giving yourself a space budget for your holiday décor can help. “For example, only five plastic tubs for Christmas décor or two closet shelves for all holiday décor. If it doesn’t fit, something has to go.” Fellow professional organizer Jennifer Ricottilli (jenniferricottilli.com) has a great tip for decoration organization: Buy colored totes or bins that coordinate with each holiday. Think green or red for Christ-

Now that you have a game plan for the holidays, create an intentional strategy to keep your home organized throughout the year. Ricottilli says that one way to avoid being overwhelmed by this goal is to focus on just one area at a time. “Know your limits and how much time you can devote to one project,” she advises. “Have a place ready to donate unwanted items, and have necessary storage totes ready. I suggest picking one day a month and dedicating it to organizing an area of your choice. Put it on the calendar and keep it as you would an important appointment.” Weiland suggests gathering all your supplies before you begin, including labels, markers and bins or bags for items to recycle, donate, sell or trash. But decluttering is only the first step. “To become truly organized, once a space has been sorted, items must be categorized like with like, logical and functional placements determined, a system created, and habits formed to maintain that system.”

READY, SET, ORGANIZE! Decluttering and organizing can be overwhelming. Weiland suggests asking yourself these questions to help you get started. • What area of the home bothers you the most? • How much time do you have to work on this? • Is there a space that needs to be done before your desired space can be started? • What is your goal and what space would start the ball rolling toward that goal? She also offers tips to keep organized throughout the year. • For every goal or resolution you make, you must implement milestones and habits. Be realistic, create a plan and be consistent. • Create priorities for what you want to accomplish. Concentrate on just one task at a time, and finish it before moving on. • Once you organize a space, create habits to maintain your system. Consistency is key in maintaining any space or system.

ENTERTAINING

Out with the Old Rules

Season’s Eatings and Drinkings When the temperature drops, D Thompson, Director of Education and Experiences at William Chris Vineyards, says it’s a great time to go for rich, full-bodied reds. “Red blends—and specifically ones with a significant amount of Merlot, like those from the Right Bank of Bordeaux—provide the body, spicy oak character and rich fruit profile that make them a roast’s best friend,” he explains. “These wines pair nicely with rich meat dishes and sauces that might overpower lighter wines.” Another choice for the cold weather is Mourvèdre, a varietal with spice notes, earthiness and deeper fruit aromas. “Pair these wines with braised or grilled meats such as short ribs and steak.” Thompson adds, “If you like gamier meats, braised lamb and grilled quail bring out the underlying red fruit tones in the wine.” Looking for a white? He recommends Roussane, a grape with a fuller body and rich texture, as a particularly nice winter white, especially when matched with root vegetables and roasted meats. “Pour a glass with mashed 68 WATERWAYS | December 2019

potatoes, roasted turnips or yams. Better yet, serve it on the table with your honey-baked ham or roasted turkey, and feel the wine sing on your palate.” Wintertime presents many an opportunity for celebration, and what better way to celebrate than with some bubbles! Thompson says sparkling rosé is a great choice for such an occasion. While many people associate rosé with summer, he explains that it’s one of the most versatile styles of wine and pairs well whenever a table is laden with a large assortment of food.

Pairing Is Personal Brundrett urges people not to get too stressed over achieving the perfect pairing. Focus instead on the fun of figuring out what you like and enjoying the community that sharing good wine creates. “Remember that wine is just a drink that brings people together,” he says. “Pairing is a good time. Have fun with it. Talk about it.” He recommends asking yourself if you think a wine tastes good with a certain food and thinking about what works or doesn’t work with the pairing. “Create intention with your experience with the food,” he encourages. “If you’re preparing a meal for someone, carefully pick out wine, carefully pick out food and then share your thoughts with your guests.” When discussing how some people may feel too intimidated to enter the world of wine, Brundrett relates it to someone working on her or his golf game. “You can’t make fun of somebody at the driving range hitting golf balls. They’re there to get better.” he says. “Wine and food are an experience. Even if it’s not the perfect pairing, it’s worth talking about it, slowing down and enjoying food with your friends and family.” William Chris Vineyards wines are available at Twin Liquors, HEB, Whole Foods and online at williamchriswines.com.

You’ve probably heard the rule “Red wine with red meat. White wine with white meat.” It’s easy to remember, but Chris Brundrett, the co-owner of William Chris Vineyards, says you’re free to throw it out. If you need a general guideline to follow, Brundrett recommends partnering tannins and fat. He explains, “Anything super creamy, heavy or fattier goes so much better with a more tannic wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon because the tannins melt the fat.” This melting process releases more of a dish’s flavors, plus the fat makes the tannic wine taste less astringent and therefore easier to drink. Brundrett notes that brightness or acidity go well with salt. “Salt doesn’t go very well with tannin. Fat doesn’t go great with acid.” He adds, “Don’t overanalyze it. Popcorn and pétillant naturel are a delicious pairing.”

Sacred Time Beauty and Adventure Await in Peru

By Shelley Seale

Once the seat of the magnificent Inca Empire, Peru today

Cusco

maintains its strong indigenous and cultural heritage. No-

The historical capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is filled with a wealth of ancient wonders. At the heart of the city is the Plaza de Armas. Here you’ll find both the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin and Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, both dating back to the 16th century, surrounded by Incan walls and Spanish-built structures that now house boutiques, restaurants, museums and more. Other must-see spots include the baroque Santo Domingo Convent, built atop the Incan Temple of the Sun as well as the San Blas neighborhood and the many vibrant artisan markets.

where can you experience this richness more fully than in the Sacred Valley. Located in the country’s Andean highlands, this beautiful region surrounding Machu Picchu is the destination for most visitors. Stretching across nearly 40 miles from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, the valley boasts mountain farmlands and lush rainforest and is dotted with charming Spanish colonial towns. 70 WATERWAYS | December 2019

Huayna Picchu rises over the ruins of Machu Picchu

A popular choice for lodging is the JW Marriott El Convento Cusco (jw-marriott.marriott. com), built within a restored 16th-century convent. Guests enjoy access to the many historic artifacts throughout the property via a private “monk’s tour” of the relics and underground excavations. The hotel also offers a cultural program with activities ranging from traditional cooking classes to face time with an alpaca. An added bonus is that the hotel pipes oxygen into rooms to help guests as they adjust to the higher elevation.

Ollantaytambo The village of Ollantaytambo (pronounced o-yantie-tambo), or Ollanta (oh-yanta) as it’s called by locals, is the perfect stop between Cusco and Machu Picchu. The train route to Aguas Calientes begins here in this picturesque and welcoming town, where cobblestone streets meander past beautiful gardens, colorful shops and fantastic restaurants. >>

The grandeur of Machu Picchu is awe-inspiring. The ruins of this once expansive, wealthy, intricate city are incredible to explore, but the setting itself steals the show.

TRAVEL The Sacred Valley is filled with many ancient sites besides Machu Picchu, and you’ll find some of the most interesting and elaborate ones just outside Ollanta. Make El Albergue Ollantaytambo (elalbergue.com) your base camp for your explorations. The hotel is located conveniently right next to the train station and offers elaborate grounds and a world-renowned restaurant.

A PeruRail train at Aguas Calientes

PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLBY THOMAS AND JAMES PRESTON

Travelers typically arrive at Machu Picchu one of two ways: by foot or by train. Hiking in requires its own set of plans as well as more time. The alternative, the railway journey from Ollanta to Aguas Calientes, is one of the most breathtaking train rides anywhere. PeruRail’s Vistadome train (perurail.com) affords spectacular views from its panoramic windows during the 90-minute trip from Ollanta. Machu Picchu is the attraction here. There’s not much to Aguas Calientes, but it’s a decent but unspectacular town that exists as a base to the magnificent ruins of the Inca Empire. Plan for two nights here so that you can spend one full day at the ruins with plenty of time to clean up and rest. Then, if so desired, you could spend a second morning at the site before taking an afternoon train back to Cusco. From town you can hike up to the site if you’re feeling hardy, with up being the operative word since the steep uphill hike can take one to two hours, depending on your pace. Or do what most people do and take the bus. You’ll have more time for the ruins—and you’ll want every moment of it! The grandeur of Machu Picchu is awe-inspiring. The ruins of this once expansive, wealthy, intricate city are incredible to explore, but the setting itself steals the show. Nestled high atop emerald-colored mountaintops with the clouds hugging everything, the site makes you truly feels as if you’re nearly at heaven’s gates. The Incas shared that feeling, since they built this place to be close to the gods. Be aware that you must buy entrance tickets to Machu Picchu in advance. You cannot purchase them there. If you’re heading to Peru at any time from May to October, the busy tourist season, you’ll need to buy tickets well in advance, either online at machupicchu.gob.pe/inicio or a travel agent. Peru steals the heart of most visitors in a way that few places do. The archeology and architecture, stunning natural beauty, amazing cuisine and welcoming, warm people make a journey here unforgettable.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Stand Tall in 2020 No one wants to start off a new year in a slump. Or a slouch. “Proper posture alone can reduce the amount of repetitive stress to our bodies,” says Dr. Andrea Luise, whose Lakeway Spine Center has been helping patients for about a dozen years. She explains that poor posture, including slumping, inhibits the diaphragm and lungs and causes shallow breathing. Shallow breathing means less oxygen, which can contribute to fatigue and anxiety, among other health issues. She adds that poor posture can also increase pressure on the spinal discs, which means back pain that can become debilitating. However, with awareness, practice and some stretching and strengthening, you can stand— and sit—tall, breath more fully and enjoy less physical pain and even a brighter mental state.

slightly tucked under, with the front of the pelvis rotating upward toward the belly button. The shoulder blades should be down…to allow the chest to lift. The head should be above the shoulders,” and notes that a slight chin tuck can help achieve optimal cranial positioning. If you’re not sure how misaligned your body might be when you stand, the doctor suggests having a friend, family member or coworker take some candid pictures of you standing and sitting. “You’ll be able to see if your head is forward on the torso, which is a huge reason for tension headaches. “The weight of your head is really heavy on the small vertebrae in your neck. I often use the analogy of a bowling ball resting on a straw. So when your head is forward on the spine, the muscles in the back of the neck are strained, which often leads to headaches.”

muscles to do the work of holding you up against the strain of gravity. That work leads to tightness and strain. Naturally, you need to retrain and strengthen your postural muscles to improve your posture. Dr. Andrea recommends a few exercises to accomplish just that, including seated rows using a resistance band or tube to target the rhomboids and crunches on a stability ball. One strengthening sequence she recommends she calls the “Superman Series.” Start by lying face down on a solid surface with your arms extended forward, shoulders relaxed. Draw your navel toward your low back to engage the deepest layer of your core, the transversus abdominis. Do not pinch or grip your buttocks as you reach all your toes back and slightly up as you inhale and then let them return to the floor as you exhale. Do not hunch your shoulders as you reach your fingertips and the crown of your head forward and slightly up as you inhale, and then relax back to the starting position as you exhale. Keep your eyes on the floor directly beneath you to keep your neck in good alignment with the rest of your spine. For variation, extend one arm and the opposite leg, and then

76 WATERWAYS | December 2019

switch. When you feel confident your shoulders and buttocks aren’t trying to do the work, simultaneously extend both arms and legs. As you strengthen your postural muscles, you also need to release those larger muscles that, when tight, impact your posture. Dr. Andrea also has recommendations to achieve this goal. For hips that are tight from sitting too long and sitting poorly, she suggests kneeling lunges. To restore the full range of mobility in the spine, open up the chest and generally get the ‘ol juices flowing in the upper body, she recommends cat-cow pose. If gravity has just gotten the better of you, sometimes there’s nothing like child’s pose. As you aim for better posture, keep in mind that good posture doesn’t happen instantly. It takes effort and awareness that you cultivate with practice and time. “Building endurance in postural muscles is the best way to improve posture,” says Dr. Andrea. “Oftentimes people have the best intentions, but then muscle fatigue sets in and the good posture is lost.” With diligence and practice, you too can stand tall.

PHILANTHROPY FOCUS Cofounders John Hardin and Jason Baldwin Tim Howard was released after 14 years on death row

Righting the Wrongs

Jason Baldwin understands firsthand the pain of going to a prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Half of the founding duo of Proclaim Justice, Baldwin was one of the West Memphis Three, a trio of teens wrongfully convicted in 1994 by the State of Arkansas of the ritualistic murders of three 8-year-old boys. After serving 18 years and 78 days in prison, the trio was released after new DNA evidence and other findings came to light. John Hardin, the organization’s other founder, had been part of the team that worked to free the West Memphis Three. He and Baldwin recognized that together they could help other people wrongfully convicted and imprisoned—for free. Since its founding in 2012, Proclaim Justice has accepted 16 cases with several more anticipated to be accepted by year’s end. “When we accept a case,” explains Hardin, “we take on all costs related to winning freedom for our client. That includes hiring attorneys and investigators and paying for all testing, material production, experts, etc. We also undertake public advocacy and media campaigns so that people are aware of the injustice that has occurred and can help free our innocent clients.” The cost of all that work, notes Baldwin, “ends up costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, beginning to end.”

80 WATERWAYS | December 2019

The Dixie Chicks perform at a fundraiser

The organization’s funding comes primarily from private contributions and fundraising efforts. “Very little of the legal and professional work is done pro bono,” Hardin says, “but we are fortunate to have highly accomplished attorneys and investigators work for much lower rates than usual. They often even work our cases charges for only staff and other expenses.” To help continue its work, Proclaim Justice will host a gala and concert fundraising event on February 6th at the Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater venue. The evening will include inspiring words from some of the people who’ve benefitted from the organization’s work as well as a live auction. It wraps with a concert headlined by Gary Clark, Jr. and with a special appearance by the Dixie Chicks. Learn more about Proclaim Justice at proclaimjustice.org.
