PUBLISHER’S LETTER And Just Like That, It’s Spring! I often find the first quarter of the year to breeze by, and 2020 is certainly no different. I am a little disappointed that this winter brought only a smattering of snow. On the bright side, we only got a smattering of snow! Central Texas winters are always enjoyable, but the beautiful springtime weather and all the exciting events that take place during this time make Austin the place to be. The arrival of spring and the bluebonnets and all the other glories of Mother Nature sure do change the landscape. Yet Mother Nature isn’t the only force changing the landscape. The incredible influx of new residents to the area over the past several years has brought monumental changes. Every time I drive around, I see new restaurants, new boutiques, new high-rises. All this growth is amazing, but I know I’m not the only one who has a hard time keeping up with all these new opportunities. That’s why part of my mission with Waterways is to spread the word about some of Austin’s latest hot spots so as to keep West Austin in the know. I think we’re all creatures of habit, but I also believe we enjoy

PUBLISHER’S SPECIAL NOTE

Dear readers, Normally on this page you’d see the first page of the issue’s events calendar. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the extraordinary measures we’re all taking to help contain it, many of the events that were to appear here have been postponed or cancelled. Many of the nonprofit organizations that host or benefit from the events that we typically publish in each issue’s calendar do not cease to operate during this time of national emergency. In fact, some of these groups are working overtime to assist people in need as our community tackles this situation. Therefore, I encourage you to continue to support these organizations. Donating your time on-site may not be possible, but you can still donate supplies via online retailers or donate funds so that they can continue their work. We’re all part of this community we love, and we’re all in this together. And together we will get through this harrowing time. Take care of one another,

The Lake Travis Education Foundation Gala honored the organization’s 35th anniversary with a trip down memory lane. Held in early March at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa, the event with its “1985 Rewind” theme had attendees traveling back in time to don their finest gold and silver lamé as well as a lot of Aqua Net hairspray to freeze those teased-topoof-perfection coiffures. Local 80s tribute band The Spazmatics performed to make the flashback complete.

ART TAKES FLIGHT FOR UMLAUF In mid-January the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum held A Burlesque Ball, its inaugural auction gala, at aerial arts studio Sky Candy. While taking in performances by aerialists and burlesque performers, attendees sipped cocktails, nibbled hors d’oeuvres and bid on silent auction items. The live auction boasted such packages as an overnight glamping trip on the UMLAUF grounds and a seven-night luxury cruise from Monte Carlo to Rome. The night ended with a karaoke after-party.

RISE TO SHINE The Rise School of Austin held its 13th annual Heart & Soul luncheon appropriately on February 13th. The event was held appropriately enough at Austin Public Library’s Central Library since the guest speaker for this year’s event was Ana Jackson, author of the children’s book Stripes for Eliana and a Rise School parent. As has become a beloved tradition, students and their fathers walked the runway for a fashion show during the luncheon.

BEAUTY

All About That Base

Prime Time Eyes I’ll be forthright. I never apply eyeshadow without applying eyeshadow primer first. If you use powder eyeshadow, then applying primer first boosts your eyeshadow’s staying power because the primer acts as a light adhesive. A primer also can boost the eyeshadow color with less product. Finally, the primer serves as a barrier between the eyeshadow and oils the eyelid skin may produce. A cream eyeshadow can work as a primer for powder eyeshadow, but using both products may not get you the look you want. The result, in my experience, is thick and heavy. The beauty of cream eyeshadow is that it’s the primer and the eyelid color all in one. 26 WATERWAYS | April 2020

My favorite eyeshadow primers have a thin texture and sheer color. These properties work for all skin types and don’t interfere with the look you aim to achieve. A good rule of thumb is to use thin layers of each product you apply. After all, it’s easier to add a touch more color than to remove too much.

Luscious Lashes Want long, full eyelashes without the hassle of extensions or falsies nor the weight of layers of mascara that might smear? A lash primer can make all the difference—and I speak from experience. I had lash extensions sporadically over the last decade, and lash primer allowed me to transition back to my natural lashes with satisfying results. My favorite is Christian Dior’s Diorshow Maximizer 3D because it not only lengthens and thickens lashes but also conditions and strengthens them. If you want to give lash primer a try, apply one coat from root to tip. For best results apply a coat or two of mascara before the primer has time to dry completely.

To borrow a line from Shakespeare, To prime, or not to prime, that is the question. In recent years cosmetic primer products offering a range of benefits have hit store shelves. But are these primers really necessary? Do they really work? As with so many of life’s questions, the answer is “It depends.” To help you decide if you could benefit from a primer, let’s consider key product categories and how they might help.

Pucker Primer When it comes to lips, a primer can impact not only how long your lip color lasts but also how full your lips appear. Lip lines can make lips look thin, but a lip primer can smooth those lines, resulting in fuller-looking lips. And just as eyelid primer helps keep eyeshadow in place, lip primer helps keep lipstick or gloss from migrating beyond your lips. Therefore, a lip primer is a must when wearing a bold lip color.

I approach mixing a

skin (enlarged pores, fine lines, scarring, etc.) or have oily skin, then a foundation primer could serve you well. Choosing the right primer for your skin type is essential. If you have oily skin, opt for a matte formula rather than one that adds a glow. A hydrating primer can work wonders for dry skin. If you’re concerned about large pores, select a primer that blurs or smooths and not one with an iridescent effect. In fact, many face primers contain silicones that give a silky finish and help blur skin texture. The best way to determine if you should use a primer and what type to use is to analyze your skin after you’ve worn foundation for a few hours. Does it look too oily or dry? Is skin texture really noticeable? From there, choose a primer that addresses those skin concerns, and then try it out with your current foundation. I approach mixing a primer and foundation like crafting a cocktail. I like to use a hydrating primer that imparts a glow with a more mattifying full-coverage foundation to create a subtle, healthy glow. Don’t be afraid to sample a few primers so that you can find the one that works best for you. Another tip: Apply the primer only where you need it. If you have an oily T-zone, only apply it to the center of your face. Concerned about the textured skin along the jawline? Apply a sheer layer only in that area. Use just what you need to create a light, natural-looking complexion. Applying too much can amplify the appearance of the problem you’re trying to downplay.

We’ve all been there, standing before a closet full of clothes and declaring, “I have nothing to wear.” “Most people only wear 20 percent of what’s in their closets,” says Edith “Edie” Henry, an Austin-area personal stylist and image consultant who helps clients learn how to make the clothing they own exciting again. “They often get into a rut of pairing the same items together all the time” when typically we have many outfit options in our closets that we’re not aware of. Henry offers her tips for discovering those new outfits by shopping your closet.

Take Inventory The crucial first step, says Henry, is to know your merchandise. “I start off by organizing, which includes purging. A closet should be inspiring. It makes shopping it so much easier! 30 WATERWAYS | April 2020

A Shopping Spree That Doesn’t Cost a Thing Awaits Then it’s a matter of building new outfits from pieces you already own.” This process includes trying on pieces you haven’t worn in a while and determining why. Maybe the item has outlived its usefulness and needs to go. Some garments may need to be altered or dry-cleaned to go back into service. Of course, you may discover a hard truth. “It may be that you just don’t know what to put with what,” she says, “but you must begin with an organized, inspiring closet.”

Install Inspiration Opportunities Once you are reacquainted with the contents of your wardrobe, Henry recommends organizing your closet much like how a retail store organizes its inventory. She puts together all like styles of a garment (all skirts, all pants, all dresses, etc.) and then arranges by color within each category. >>

STYLE FILE For example, the stylist puts all the tops on the uppermost bar of a closet and groups them by sleeve length. Within each grouping she arranges solid-color shirts from light to dark and then prints light to dark. No matter what organization method you develop, having full visibility and access to what you own can spark the imagination in ways you never thought possible. If a reorganized closet doesn’t fire up your sartorial imagination, Henry recommends enlisting help, perhaps even from a styling pro. Style bloggers and even Pinterest might be helpful. She also suggests, “Maybe look at what your style icon is wearing, and then see if you can create something similar but a look that is still you.”

Build Your Inventory Wisely In the process of purging and organizing, you may discover that you’re missing a few key pieces that can help you put your existing wardrobe to even better use. “You can prepare a shopping list of pieces you may actually need to buy and not waste money buying mistakes.” Ensure you buy what you need, not what you think you should have. “I don’t think everyone should have the same staple pieces in their wardrobe,” Henry shares. “What is necessary for an executive may not be reasonable for a nurse or stay-at-home mom or a student….” The stylist recommends taking inventory at least twice a year, usually at the beginning of the fall/winter wardrobe season and at the beginning of the spring/summer season. In addition to seasonal shopping sessions, the “One piece in, one piece out” rule can keep inventory under control. If you fear this system won’t let you take part in the latest trends, Henry has some advice. “There are so many

trends that walk the runway each fashion week that it’s hard to keep up,” she declares. Moreover, not every trend works for every body type or lifestyle. “I typically recommend that my clients keep a wardrobe that has great quality classic pieces that can go year to year to which you can add some trendy things seasonally,” she offers. “A few trendy items that really speak to one’s indiShopping your closet, especially the first time, can be a time-consuming and messy process as you purge, sort and organize. It can also be an emotionally fraught endeavor. “It is hard for people to be unbiased about a piece,” Henry shares. “It’s hard to let go of things we spent our hard-earned money on.” Ultimately, the hard work does pay off when you can step into your closet, survey all the riches at your disposal and put together a stylish outfit with confidence.

Dressing the Bump Pregnancy and Style Are Not Mutually Exclusive By Liz Sikora Seither

Weekend Errands

Liz Sikora Seither and her mom, Lisa Sikora, own Austinbased clothing label Amberleaf. Not only is she the firm’s chief marketing officer, but Sikora Seither is set to become a mom in April. Here she shares her insights on dressing for two in style. When I learned I was pregnant, I experienced a wave of emotions and had many thoughts and questions about what was to come. One particular question I found quite pressing as a fashion designer: What am I going to wear? I’m here to assure women that just because you’re pregnant you do not have to lose your personal style.

Obviously a woman’s body changes as her pregnancy progresses. Therefore, structured clothing is not your friend. Any garment that has too much structure, especially in the bodice, won’t serve you well. Finding clothes that fit in key areas and are forgiving in others is important. To this end, buying a slightly larger size that fits well through the shoulders is a good choice. If a garment fits through the shoulders and doesn’t have structure, it can serve you through your pregnancy and even afterwards. Another key factor is comfort. A garment that fits through the shoulders but doesn’t have structure is more >> 36 WATERWAYS | April 2020

STYLE FILE comfortable throughout your pregnancy. Fabric content plays a big role too. Stretchy fabric is an essential element in any garment so that you can wear it comfortably as your bump grows.

Baby Stylishly On Board Since life doesn’t stop while you’re pregnant, you need outfits that not only are suited for your changing body but also that are appropriate for the purpose and are stylish. Here are some ways to put together an out that demonstrate the fundamentals of dressing the bump. At the Office Unfortunately, office buildings can have temperatures that aren’t kind to pregnant bodies, so you might need outfits that you can adjust to the weather outside and inside. A sports coat made of a fabric with stretch is not only ideal but also versatile since you can pair it with a host of garments throughout and after your pregnancy. Dinner with Friends Achieve a chic, comfortable look by keeping the outfit relatively simple and relying on color for flare. Team black yoga pants with a tunic or shirt dress, and then add an eye-catching pop of color with a bright jacket. This ensemble you can wear not only after your baby arrives but also when you’re the busy mom of an active tot.

Night on the Town For a fancy night out, unstructured clothing is your best friend. A wrap-style cocktail dress paired with a tuxedo jacket creates a sophisticated look. The lack of a fitted waist in both garments means you can wear this outfit postpartum too. Weekend Errands You definitely don’t want to feel restricted by clothing when you’re out and about taking care of the to-do lists. That’s when a loose-fitting, oversized dress is a godsend. So long as the dress fits well through the shoulders, you’re golden. Add panache with a jacket or duster-style vest. Cozy at Home You don’t want to feel slovenly even when you’re relaxing at home, so take a few cues from athleisure wear to be comfy and stylish in private. Yoga pants with their accommodating stretch and an oversized blouse or sweater can help you feel dressed even when you’re chilling. With a little bit of creativity and planning, you can invest in stylish clothing that you’ll want to wear after you give birth.

TRUE BLUE

T

hat Pantone named Classic Blue as its 2020 selection is not too surprising when you consider how it’s described: “Instilling calm, confidence and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.” Who wouldn’t mind a bit more calm and stability in these fractious times? The desire to make the home a place of calm and stability is natural, so bringing Classic Blue into interior design elements seems just as natural. However, the challenge is incorporating this 2020 color trend in a way that won’t go out of style when Pantone names its color for 2021. Fortunately, Kathryn Childers of Austin’s own K&K Interiors is here to help.

Lake Hills home. Childers and McKellar added touches of blue with light fixtures, cabinetry and dinnerware that popped against the white countertops, wood-grain island, natural brick backsplash and leather barstools. The result is a clean, unfussy look. You can achieve a similar result by adding accessories in Classic Blue, such as a blue vase or a light fixture with blue-tinted glass. Want a bolder option? Roll on a coat of Classic Blue paint to create an accent wall.

A Bigger Commitment

Childers and her design partner Kendl McKellar are known for their classic yet modern aesthetic. They work to make each project “feel collected and timeless,” says Childers. To that end, the pair tend to employ a neutral palette that they punctuate with multiple textures, materials and pops of color that show through in curated pieces of art, light fixtures, wallpaper and textiles. This same approach works brilliantly with Classic Blue. In fact, both designers recommend pairing it with sophisticated choices such as brass and fabrics with woven textures or a camel leather, all of which allow this bold color to shine. Childers offers additional advice for bringing into your home this “solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on.”

If you want to branch out, consider expanding the range of blues you use in a room. Childers points out that the color can easily be brought into a living room with throw pillows or pieces of art in an array of blues. If you want a bigger commitment to Classic Blue, buy or reupholster an occasional chair in the blue hue. Employing shades of blue can make them better complement existing woodwork and accessories.

Big Blue

Small Touches

If you want Classic Blue to reign supreme, then make it the focal point of the room. In the living room a blue couch or blue oversized chairs can certainly claim attention. Childers suggests that touches such as a vintage wooden credenza, neutral sheers and a brass pendant light keep the blue from totally dominating the space. Classic Blue cabinets certainly make a statement and are quite trendy. Last but not least, floor-to-ceiling Classic Blue paint on all the walls of a room certainly will bring the color to the forefront of any room.

There’s nothing wrong with starting simple. Take for example the kitchen redesign K&K Interiors recently did in a West

SPALLER GLOVER UNITES INSPIRED DESIGN WITH EXCEPTIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP By Cindy Brzostowski

The portfolio of Austin-based design-build firm Spaller Glover looks more like a collection of Old World castles and cottages, manor houses and manses than a display of dwellings created in the 21st-century in Central Texas. The European design touches that are a hallmark of Ivan Spaller and Priscilla Glover’s work is not too extraordinary

Barcelona Modern

considering he grew up in Italy and Turkey and she in Austria. The duo, who are both creative partners as well as life partners, routinely draw inspiration from their European upbringings and continue to be inspired from their frequent travels. Such as when their trips to the Cotswolds in England and Alsace in France inspired them to create a half-timbered house. The time they spent in an ancient chateau in the Dordogne in France led to sketches that included similar roof lines and irregularly shaped windows. “There are countless examples of details one might stumble upon in a historic location,” says Spaller. “A round window in an ancient Greek villa that seems to work. An art nouveau door on a Portuguese tavern or a geometric tile floor in a cave hotel in Matera, Italy. “The unexpected is fun. I think that is where those devilish qualities in design really thrive. All in all, it is fun to import ideas from other parts of the world.”

Bouldin Castle

From Inspiration to Realization Spaller Glover designed the Barcelona Modern house on Mary Street just a few blocks off South Congress. An exercise in early modernism, this impressive home incorporates monumental minimalism with bits of Bauhaus, art deco and art nouveau. Its large round windows convening with the sharp lines of the stone are immediately eye-catching. Another one of the firm’s notable creations is Bouldin Castle, a few blocks west of the Barcelona Modern house. The structure was built in 1925 to serve as San José Catholic Church. Decades later, Spaller and Glover converted it into a luxurious, modern castle, transforming the 1,100-squarefoot church into a 4,200-square-foot property complete with modern conveniences and even a turret. A mere 180 feet from Bouldin Castle is another project, Swallows Hollow. At this location the duo transformed a mod-

est bungalow into Bavarian-looking cottage that appears straight out of a storybook. With this one, you don’t have to look far to find some whimsy—the rafter tales themselves are silhouettes of large-nose men! While most of their inspiration admittedly comes from central Europe and the United Kingdom, Spaller admits, “If someone came to us and said they wanted a Balinese house, I would jump up and grab my sarong and drive barefoot to the meeting.” >>

April 2020 | WATERWAYS 49

Clockwise from top left: The Bavarian-inspired Swallows Hollow, Tudor cottage-inspired Cherry Cottage and the two views of the Rose Bud home with its Gothic features all showcase Spaller Glover’s European design touches.

The couple first met some 15 years ago while working on a project. At the time Glover was a real estate developer, and Ivan had a plant nursery and landscape design company. Each Spaller Glover project allows them to bring their respective strengths into the collaboration. Spaller zeroes in on structure, from concept through construction. Glover focuses more on refinement by coordinating plans and applications, handling permits and designing the interiors. A project typically takes between nine months and a year. So who could benefit from working with Spaller Glover? Anyone in the market for something a little outside the box.

What you won’t find in a Spaller Glover project is the latest in design trends. However, the pair certainly bring their unique perspective. “We obviously take some more daring liberties, ones that regular builders would shy away from or simply would have no idea how to execute them,” says Spaller. “Yeah, we have taken some creative risks in our ventures, and we are still here 15 years later.” In the end, Spaller says that what all of their clients get is “something completely different from the norm, in look and craft.” “We only build what we design,” he explains. “Some peo-

“The unexpected is fun. I think that is where those devilish qualities in design really thrive. All in all, it is fun to import ideas from other parts of the world.” Something “bespoke,” “timeless” and “crafted,” as stated in the firm’s philosophy. Spaller says their clientele is “anyone who wants a unique and interesting home that is filled with beautiful spaces and charming details. Perhaps people who don’t want to live in a house that looks like another one on the street or neighborhood…or state.”

“Yes, blue and white kitchens have had their heyday, but lately I’ve seen people using grey, taupe, greens and other colors that feel organic but have depth to them and are not over the top.”

Sarah Stacey

Lauren Ramirez

Back to Nature Designer Stacey is loving the trends she’s already seeing this year. “We’re moving away from bold-patterned kitchens and to a more natural, textured kitchen,” she says. Think organic materials, neutrals and updated jewel tones, “quarter-sawn oak so you can see the grain, matte and leather finishes over the glossy stone.” She adds that stone floors are coming back for kitchens as well. In one of her most recent projects, which she named Ladera Norte, the custom white oak cabinetry blends seamlessly with white oak bar stools from a local favorite, Nannie Inez on South Lamar. Furthermore, the palette highlights the limestone rock wall that’s visible through the oversized kitchen windows. For the island the designer went with a black matte porcelain that is very heat-resistant and is a thinner countertop material, which is starting to be trendy in more modern homes. Concrete flooring completes the look. Another trend that Stacey is seeing is a move away from brightly colored, graphic backsplashes along with transitional design and darker cabinetry. “A lot of people were doing really graphic backsplashes, but now people are using ones that look a little more handmade, like clay tile.” For her recent Ramsey project, she went with a luxe blue-green paint that is a spin on Classic Blue, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2020. She then added a modern soapstone waterfall-edge island to play off the more traditional cabinetry design. The finishing touch was a neutral stacked tile by Fireclay Tile for the backsplash. 54 WATERWAYS | April 2020

Ramirez likewise has seen a shift toward more organic materials along with marble and quartzite backsplashes. Statement range hoods are becoming more popular—think contrasting color or design or a different material, such as plaster, wood-wrapped or rolled steel. Lighting fixtures with mixed finishes also add that touch of contrast. But Ramirez believes that both colorful and neutral kitchens are here to stay. “Yes, blue and white kitchens have had their heyday, but lately I’ve seen people using grey, taupe, greens and other colors that feel organic but have depth to them and are not over the top,” she says. For a recently completed single-family home project in Barton Hills, Ramirez used a wood-wrapped range hood as one of the focal points of the kitchen along with a large geometric pendant lamp over the island. “Oversized lighting is another trend we’ll see for a while,” she says. Like Stacey, Ramirez sees more and more designers using encaustic tile for backsplashes, especially in Austin. “We’re lucky to have resources such as Clay Imports and Architerra,” two stores that sell a range of clay and cement tiles. For her Sycamore kitchen renovation project, she not only updated the room’s look with a clay tile backsplash but also incorporated the organic materials trend in a thrifty way. She bought woven barstools dating back to the 1970s from the antiques online retailer Chairish. Ultimately, Ramirez and Stacey both believe that while certain colors and materials will have their moments of trendiness, neutral palettes and timeless designs will stand the test of time. Monique Capanelli, the founder and creative director of Articulture—or artrepreneur as she’s sometimes called— launched the firm in 2009. Since then, the company has created commercial installations for some big-names clients, such as Google, Dell and Whole Foods Market. Its clients are certainly not limited to corporate giants. The firm’s residential design projects and custom pieces have been an important component of the business since it started.

“Evaluating the level of available natural light is important to assess the best spot for the success of the plants,” says Capanelli. She adds that since the work is a piece of art, it should make sense with the client’s aesthetic. When working with a client to decide whether a piece made with living plants, preserved plants or premium faux plants is best, “we’ll feel out what their level of interaction with the piece looks like,” she explains. “Some people— professed green thumbs or not—rate a higher need for the ebb and flow and needed care that comes with having something that is alive. For others, it may not be an option due to the space they want the artwork in, or they may not want to incur the cost of ongoing care.”

Reaping the Benefits For some clients, the improved air quality that comes with a live palette is exactly what draws them to Articulture Designs’ work. Then there are those folks who simply like that the completed installation lends a more positive or more creative atmosphere. While this type of decor is unique, that doesn’t mean it costs a lot of green. Capanelli wants to clear up the misconception that this kind of floral art is financially unattainable for the average residential client. “Just like anything, there are levels of what can be done. There is a lot that is attainable with a limited budget and can garner all the same benefits—softening the space, bringing beauty to a room and so on,” she notes. “We design and fabricate multiple scales of green walls as well as botanical sculptures. The end result is always to have the natural world around you.” “Plants make people happy. Art makes people happy.” Articulture Designs is at 6405 Menchaca Rd and at articulturedesigns.com. 58 WATERWAYS | April 2020

DOWNSIZING

FINDING THE FREEDOM AND FLEXIBILITY IN LESS SPACE

I

n the 2017 movie Downsizing, Matt Damon’s character seeks a more carefree life by being shrunk to about 5 inches tall and moving to Leisureland, a community for downsized folks. In the real world, fortunately, downsizing doesn’t entail shrinking your body, but you can enjoy a more carefree life. Austin-area homeowners looking to exchange the family castle for smaller digs can get a wealth of knowledge and assistance from real estate agent and downsizing specialist Cathy Romano. Here she shares her insights on making the big-to-small transition.

life? What home features do you want, and which ones will you need? Functionality—Test-drive downsized living by renting a small home or condo locally or at a vacation destination. This experiment can help you understand how much space you’ll need. Finances—If you’re still working, do you need to commute or could you work at home? These job-related factors must be considered. If selling your current home results in a big capital gain, can you afford the resulting tax?

Why downsize? The biggest attraction seems to be the financial savings. Who wants to spend hard-earned money maintaining a big house no longer used as it once was? The nest has served its purpose but is now empty, so it seems logical to follow the kids and leave it too! What should homeowners think about when considering downsizing? I always ask my clients if they are emotionally and physically ready to move. I also tell them to consider “The Five Fs” before putting up the “For Sale” sign: Future—What’s the long-term plan for the next phase of 60 WATERWAYS | April 2020

Fantasy—Dream big! Why not make the next chapter of life something totally different? Maybe you’ve always wanted to live on a golf course or in the heart of the city— or maybe far from it. Family—Many adult children boomerang back home at some point, but don’t be afraid to do what’s best for you. In the end, homeowners might decide to improve their home rather than move. What are the top three benefits of downsizing? Simply put, more money, more time and a healthier lifestyle. The money benefit is a no-brainer because you’re >>

Who wants to spend hard-earned money maintaining a big house no longer used as it once was? Say good-bye to the big house and big lawn that require so much time and money to maintain.

Easy access to Lady Bird Lake’s boardwalk draws downsizers to Travis Heights.

The Quest for the Right Size When it comes to buying a right-size home, is it still all about location? Location is really important and so too is the layout of the space. Most of my clients want one-story living in an area with a high walkability score, such as Travis Heights. Every situation is different, of course, and the right location depends on the needs and lifestyle of the homeowners, now and in their future. Condos theoretically seem like an option. However, can downsizing to a condo offer significant financial savings given Austin’s real estate market? You typically pay more per square foot for a newer, smaller place such as a condo, but the money you save on owner-

Letting go of possessions can be tough—and liberating.

ship costs far surpasses the purchase price. The property taxes and utility bills tend to be lower, and think of the savings if you can walk everywhere. That said, I educate clients about condo association dues and counsel them about what those dues cover and about the possibility of unforeseen assessments. Having the exterior of your property covered by the condo association is nice as too is having a smaller yard or no yard whatsoever, but sometimes those dues may outweigh the benefits.

An Unavoidable Truth How do downsizing homeowners tackle the physical and emotional tasks of shedding possessions? One simple truth here: “Just do it!” I recommend taking baby steps so you’re not overwhelmed. Start decluttering one room or one area at a time. Consider adopting the Marie Kondo approach: If it doesn’t give you joy, then let it go the way you want. Now is your opportunity to give your excess belongings to the people or organizations that you want. Definitely don’t wait until the last minute, or else you’ll need a storage unit for the overflow. Get more downsizing advice and insights from Cathy Romano on her website, cromanorealtor.com.

moving to a smaller and probably more efficient place. You won’t face huge maintenance costs. Less home maintenance also means more free time. If homeowners relocate to an area where they can walk everywhere, then they spend less time in traffic. The health benefit is something I’ve perceived in my clients who’ve downsized. They seem younger, freer and have more energy. It’s awesome watching these downsizers reinvent themselves as they enter a new life stage, unchained from the big house and that endless honeydo list.

Architecture on the Mind An easy-to-follow guide to downtown’s most beautiful buildings By Lauren Jones

Austin has a long and celebrated history, one that residents and visitors alike can learn more about by heading downtown and pounding the pavement with eyes turned upward. >> Stroll Congress Avenue from the bridge to the capitol building as well as the side streets, and take it in with a new perspective as you, maybe for the first time, pay attention to building details. You’ll find ornate, arched windows, neoclassical columns and even castle-like spires amongst the modern lines of newer high-rises. >> So if you’re looking for a new way to experience downtown, enjoy this architectural walking guide.

Potent Potable Presents

The Gentle Art of Gifting Spirits By Cindy Brzostowski

Not everyone is blessed with the talent for choosing the

Stay Classy

perfect gift for every occasion. The task can be so stressful

As you’re perusing the shelves for the perfect gift bottle, keep in mind this simple rule from Spalding: “Keep it classic and don’t go for something with esoteric flavor.” You may love a specific brand’s interesting ingredients and unique taste, but your recipient may not. Unless you’re absolutely sure about someone’s flavor preferences, your best bet is to stick to the classics so there’s less chance your gift will end up gathering dust in the back of the recipient’s liquor cabinet.

And therein lies a great gift. If you’ve ever found yourself stumped for what to give an adult, consider wrapping up a nice bottle of alcohol. A thoughtfully selected liquor or spirit checks the boxes of a gift that’s both practical and fun. Sandra Spalding, the marketing director of Twin Liquors, offers some expert advice on how to make that selection.

A Spirited Gift Sure, a bottle of wine or a six-pack of beer may seem like an obvious gift option for some adults and some situations. However, selecting a liquor or spirit has certain benefits. “A special bottle of bourbon or scotch is something the recipient will be able to sip on and enjoy for months,” Spalding explains, “as opposed to wine or beer, which needs to be consumed once opened.” 68 WATERWAYS | April 2020

Remember the Setting Your recipient’s taste preferences is not the only factor you should consider. Depending on the occasion, you should also consider what the recipient might need to do or have when serving your gift to actually enjoy it. You don’t want your present to just create more work for that special person. “If you are taking something to a party, make sure it is easy to serve,” she says. “For example, don’t bring something the host will have to have special mixers for or serve with special glassware. Also, bring it chilled if it should be served as such!”

Create the Perfect Pairing If you want to add an extra special touch to your gift, consider pairing the bottle with a related accompaniment. >>

The Great Esthetical Quest Guidance for Selecting a Med Spa

Market research firm ReportLinker estimates that by 2025

Evaluate the Space

the global medical spa industry could surpass $23 billion.

A med spa should offer clients the comfort and relaxation of a spa with the safety, privacy and sanitary conditions of a health care facility. If you don’t feel like the space is one in which you can relax and feel welcomed or if it doesn’t seem sterile, then look elsewhere.

venate Austin, has some insights for determining which med spa is right for you.

Read Reviews The first step to selecting a med spa, says Dr. Wright, is to read online reviews on such sources as Yelp, Facebook or Google. “Typically, reviews are a smart way to get an overall impression of consumers’ experiences.” She also encourages prospective clients to pay attention to how the business responds—if at all—to negative reviews and complaints. “A strong, healthy establishment will be able to show off positive reviews as well as appropriately handle and respond to negative reviews.”

Confirm the ‘Med’ in ‘Med Spa’ Remember that a medical spa is a medical practice. Dr. Wright stresses that medical professionals should be present at the facility and should oversee all procedures deemed medical procedures under Texas law, including administration of injectables such as Botox and cosmetic fillers. She advises, “If you are receiving Botox, you should see a nurse practitioner (NP) or physician assistant (PA) for the procedure. If you’re receiving laser hair removal, you can see an esthetician after you’re cleared for the procedure by the on-site doctor or PA.” 76 WATERWAYS | April 2020

Get a Medical Consultation, Not a Sales Pitch “A medical consultation with a doctor or PA is one of the most important pieces of your med spa visit,” says Dr. Wright. You should be prepared to provide information about your health history, including the current prescription and over-the-counter medications and supplements you take, as well as about your lifestyle and aesthetic goals. Be wary if the medical clearance portion of your visit is just a discussion of your outer appearance that leads to a hard sell for how many procedures and how many units the provider thinks you need. Dr. Wright notes that she spends at least 30 minutes talking with a patient about her or his health history. “Not only do I create trust via this consultation with each patient…,” she explains, “but it gives me ample time to answer questions and discuss the desired results.”

Ask Questions Before consenting to any procedure, definitely confirm who will perform the procedure and confirm that the person is appropriately licensed and trained to do so, encourages Dr. Wright. Ask any other questions or voice any concerns you might have about the planned procedure. If staff discourage questions or demure from giving you information, then go elsewhere.

ASK THE BUILDER with national award-winning builder, Shan Jenkins, of Jenkins Design Build

Why Design-Build

As a full service Architecture, Interior Design, and Construction firm, I’m often asked, “why design-build, what does your firm do different?”

First, it’s worth mentioning that architecture and construc-

tion were originally one in the same. The Greek Word “Architekton”, from which we get the word Architect, is literally translated

joe connors

from the words “archi” or Chief and “tekton”, Builder. In other

c o m m e r c i a l r e a l e s tat e

words, the original architects were also chief builders.

So what are advantages…

Design Intent: Nobody understands design intent better than the Architect and Interior Designer. Separating them from the con-

struction process greatly lessons the probability of achieving the

s p e c i a l i z i n g i n l a k e way a n d b e e c av e

desired results.

Budget Control: When architecture, interior design, and construction are one company, achieving the budget goal is much simpler. The construction team provides immediate cost feed-

back to the architect, and the interior designer moderates the material selections to stay within budget.

Schedule: Unique to us, and more like commercial projects,

all material specifications are finalized in advance of construction. This expedites construction immensely as materials are

ordered in advance, stored, and ready when needed. This

process mimics “just in time delivery” that is commonly used

in manufacturing. Also, because we knew ahead of time what the materials were going to be, re-work is eliminated.

Peace of Mind: The unfortunate circumstance of the Architect

being on one team, the Interior Designer on another, and the Contractor on yet another creates separate agendas that the Owner becomes the unfortunate mediator of. Rather than en-

joying the process, the Owner becomes entrapped in a daily struggle of differing opinions, goals and objectives.

There are other advantages, but these are the main ones, and so for your project, consider hiring an ARCHITEKTON.

PHILANTHROPY FOCUS

Safe Harbor The Refuge Offers Healing, Hope for Young

For a young person trapped in domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST), rescue does not resolve the trauma she or he has experienced but is instead only the first step in the recovery process. Drawing from her experience counseling young women and working with organizations outside the U.S. to end child sex trafficking, Brooke Crowder founded The Refuge for DMST in 2013 to address what she perceived was a lack of coordinated services to aid sex trafficking survivors at home. Local, state and federal parties became involved and so too did generous donors and supporters. The result was the opening in August 2018 of The Refuge Ranch, a long-term residential rehabilitation center for up to 48 minor females up to age 19. At the 50-acre ranch in Bastrop County, survivors rebuild their lives through The Refuge Circle of Care, which provides medical and psychological services, education via its University of Texas Charter School, equine therapy sessions along with opportunities to develop independent living and social skills so that they can not only recover but also thrive. The Refuge is working with Dell Medical School’s psychiatry department to provide appropriate mental health care but also to better understand the mental health care needs of sex trafficking victims to improve outcomes.

Donations are crucial for meeting expenses and other needs, so The Refuge hosts two annual fundraisers. Its Hope Appétit annual gala in January pits local celebrity chefs against one another in a culinary competition, and the Not on My Watch annual autumn luncheon brings together supporters to honor the work accomplished. The organization also publishes “The List,” a wish list of clothing, home goods, office supplies and more that it accepts at a designated collection site typically twice a month. MY AUSTIN

Favorite things about Austin, by some of its notable locals ACL Live at the Moody Theater

“Moody is seriously the most impressive place I have ever been for live music.”

Covet Hats founder Aimee Speer began coveting hats in her 20s, but hatmaking hasn’t always been her focus. She moved to Austin in 1998, having fallen in love with its warm culture and kind-hearted people. For a decade she and her sister operated Hem Jeans, which offered premium denim jeans and more. After closing the boutique in 2014, Speer discovered her next undertaking in her beloved hats. She launched Covet Hats to offer custom-made, heirloom-quality chapeaux she creates using her skills as an artist and a craftsperson.

The Grove Wine Bar & Kitchen Westlake

“The menu has something for everyone, and the service is great. My favorite is the Asian Crisp Salad.”

Jeffrey’s

“The bar at Jeffrey’s is my happy place. It is the coziest room in Austin.”
