Welcome IWA national chairman, ivor caplan

On behalf of The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) may I welcome you to IWA Canalway Cavalcade at Li‫﬙‬le Venice. As you walk around the event and enjoy your visit you will understand the many benefits that our inland waterways bring to everyone. The colour and interest provided by the many boats a‫﬙‬ending, the heritage and wildlife of the canal surroundings and the simple pleasure of being near water all combine to make this a wonderful experience. It is difficult to imagine that without the efforts of our volunteers for over 70 years, all of this could have been lost or become derelict. Cavalcade could not take place without IWA’s volunteers, those who work all year to prepare for the event, those who you will see around the site over the weekend and those who have cruised their boats considerable distances from all around the country to be with us.

At this event IWA is sharing its Vision for London’s Waterways. This is our proposal for the long-term development and management of London’s rivers and canals in order to maintain and enhance all the benefits that you can see around you. Have an enjoyable visit to IWA Canalway Cavalcade and as you walk around the site do not hesitate to speak to our volunteers about their involvement. Or visit IWA’s Hub stand at Paddington Central to find out more about the Charity and how you can help us to continue working for the inland waterways.

London is a marvellous destination for boats from the canal network and the River Thames, a home for those who live afloat and an important amenity for those who use its towpaths. All of this comes with the challenges of managing these different uses and giving everyone an equal opportunity to enjoy these waterways.

4

IWA Canalway cavalcade chairman, Mark Saxon

The theme also covers the wider community of volunteers in this country and my thanks go to all of you who give up the most precious thing we have all got and that’s our time, for the sake of others. You are all stars. 2019 also provides our event with the chance to look at how we can be a be‫﬙‬er neighbour by championing our recycling and sustainability protocols. We’ve worked hard with input from experts in the field to encourage the use of smokeless fuel and seasoned wood by our boaters, reducing our reliance on single use plastics, asking our caterers and traders to look at their supplies and products, and providing information about where you can fill up your reusable water bo‫﬙‬les. Plastic pollution is a huge problem, not only for those of us who use and love the waterways network but for society in general and we hope in our small way that you will contribute to making the event as plastic free as possible.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome every single one of you to this year’s IWA Canalway Cavalcade. There is something for everyone here, so please look around and enjoy the day or days you are with us. The theme of this year’s event is Celebrating Our Volunteers. The Inland Waterways Association has a small commi‫﬙‬ed staff but would not be able to carry out the majority of its campaign work without the selfless dedication of hundreds of volunteers who run our branches and events up and down the country. The volunteers at this event will be wearing red IWA t-shirts, so if you see any of our marvellous people PLEASE go up to them and say ‘thank you’. It will make them smile and that’s good.

So, whatever brings you to IWA Canalway Cavalcade 2019, on behalf of my team… Welcome and Enjoy.

Although the event is free to a‫﬙‬end, I would urge you please to donate into our collectors’ buckets in order that the event can continue in future years.

and to reduce the number of boats currently having to move every 14 days.

As the number of boats on London’s waterways continues to grow, IWA has launched a new Vision for London, an in-depth report that looks at the complex issues faced by the many different users of the capital’s rivers and canals.

A new type of community mooring is suggested as one way to deal with the moorings shortage. These community moorings would be owned and run by boaters, ideally in disused basins or derelict canalside sites. IWA’s suggestion is that they would contain no more than ten boats and we would work with all interested groups to help them get up and running.

Protecting heritage assets and riverscapes affordable housing

reducing carbon footprint

Due to the high density of boats in central London and the shortage of moorings, boats are oſten double, or even triple moored for hundreds of metres of bankside. Walkers along the towpath have few breaks in the boats through which to view the water and there are concerns about air quality, fire safety and overall visitor experience both on the water and for users of the towpaths. IWA is asking for regular breaks in the line of boats as well as limiting moorings to two abreast.

There are 145 miles of navigable waterways within London and over recent years there has been a large increase in the number of boats on these waterways, with Canal & River Trust predicting further growth of up to 52% by 2022. The waterways have changed and developed dramatically both in terms of user numbers on and off the water as well as how Londoners feel about and use these spaces.

The boat density in London has also resulted in a shortage of facilities and we would like to see the number of facilities increase to satis﬌ the ever-growing demand.

The primary issues for boaters in London are the shortage of both permanent and visitor moorings as well as a lack of facilities. In the Vision report, we show how IWA will work with Navigation Authorities and local councils to try and get moorings recognised on the local planning agenda. A number of new potential sites for permanent moorings are highlighted with the overall aim being to increase the number of affordable permanent mooring sites in the capital

Over the last few decades, much of London’s waterways heritage has been lost; sometimes this has been due to inappropriate developments. We would like to ensure our waterways heritage is protected as well as our waterscapes – the views we have come to love.

Hillingdon Narrowboats association and pisces In 1957, Pisces was converted to a passenger trip boat and renamed Water Sprite, working in the Birmingham area. In 1964, she was purchased from British Waterways by Stan Clover for use as a camping boat and re-renamed Pisces. In 1968 / 9, she was purchased by the London Borough of Hillingdon as a youth outreach facility. She was operated successfully by the council for many years, but in the late 1990s public expenditure cuts started to bite and management of the boat was transferred to her supporters in the Hillingdon Narrowboats Association, who have run her ever since, sometimes with the children and grandchildren of early passengers on board. She has now achieved her 50th year of service to the community.

Visit Pisces moored on the Paddington Arm to see a historic narrowboat at close quarters. Hillingdon Narrowboats Association (HNA) provides affordable narrowboating for the community, running six boats from their base near Coppermill Lock, Harefield. They provide day and longer trips for community and youth groups, including (on their specially adapted boat Spirit) people with disabilities. Their flagship boat, Pisces, is celebrating her 50th year of community service in 2019. Pisces was built in 1935 for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Co as their fleet No 73. With her original unpowered bu‫ ﬛‬Puppis, she was one of 12 pairs of the “Small Northwich” variety of the GUCCCo’s Star Class.

Celebrate the Golden Anniversary Open Day on Sunday 12th May from 2:30 pm. Visit HNA on Pisces or go to their website www.hna.org.uk to find out more.

In 1942, with 13 of her sisters she was requisitioned by the Ministry of War Transport and became a fire boat based in the Surrey Commercial Docks in South London, fi‫﬙‬ed with powerful pumps and water monitors.

Celebrating her 50th year of service to the community

She was returned to GUCCCo post war and on the nationalisation of the waterways passed to British Waterways South West division as a maintenance boat.

Stay Safe near the water •

Take care walking along the towpaths, there are more boats here than usual and there are, unavoidably, some trip hazards – watch your step and look where you are going at all times!

Do not lean out over the water or sit on or lean against the boats, they can move about unexpectedly

Never jump across or dive into the canal

Dogs are welcome but must be on leads at all times. Please pick up aſter your dogs – Cavalcade doesn’t have a Dog Poo Fairy! Any li‫﬙‬er bin can be used

Make use of the li‫﬙‬er disposal facilities and recycle/reuse whenever possible

The First Aid Post is on Paddington Central under the flyover, marked on the Site Plan on the centre pages of this brochure

Cycling is not allowed anywhere on the Festival Site – please dismount and walk with your bike or find another route

Please listen out for important public safety announcements If you have any concerns please go to the nearest Information Point (there are three: on the Paddington Towpath, on the South Towpath and in Rembrandt Gardens, marked with an on the Site Plan on the centre pages of this brochure) or the IWA Marquee at Paddington Central, near the Harrow Road Bridge.

Enjoy water...

We’re the charity who look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of waterways, because we believe that life is better by water. Research shows that spending time by water, whether it be your lunchbreak, daily commute or just a weekend stroll, really does make us feel happier and healthier. Our canals and rivers run through some of the most heavily populated communities in England and Wales, providing accessible green and blue space where it’s needed the most. That’s why we’re working with volunteers and communities across England and Wales to transform canals and rivers into spaces where people want to spend time and feel better. We know this will bring wellbeing opportunities to millions. Our work involves not only looking after our waterways, but promoting them widely to the eight million plus people who have waterways on their doorstep so that many more people benefit from our free, accessible and local source of wellbeing.

Jena, our floating welcome station is at Cavalcade today.

If you’re on the land, join us at our Canal & River Trust marquee for some Canal inspired arts and crafts.

Step onto our wide beam boat and take part in our ‘build a bird box activity‘. Open to all to join in, but children under four years may need an adult to help assemble the box. See you at Westway flyover underpass just next to Sheldon Square amphitheatre.

Decorate your own paper plate in traditional Roses & Castles style or go more this century with glitter and tinsel. Take away your own designer plate to hang on the wall, just as the bargees would have done 100 years ago. Look out for our Trust marquee near to Battleship Building.
