Chiltern Branch 2016 trip So, it’s Friday 30th September and Beryl and I are about to join our first Chiltern Branch weekend away; meeting point, Wycombe Swan car park.

John Ellis was already there; I had used excellent photos from John in previous issues of Grapevine but it was a pleasant surprise to realise that John and I had known each other when we both worked for Xerox. Colin Bird had again secured the services of Ray; it soon became clear why Ray is Colin’s Heyfordian driver of choice. We had a timely and uneventful journey to the headquarters of The Dudley Canal Tunnel Trust but our boat trip through the tunnel was starting from the other end! 15 minutes later we embarked, hard hats fitted and cameras ready! At this end the tunnel is very tight but opens up after about half a mile; the Do you think it will fit?

greatest areas of interest are at the Trust HQ end and this where the shorter trips for the public operate.

With basins, multiple tunnels at the old limestone mines and much more there is too much to detail here; I do Ge ng ght!

The entrance to the black Country Museum, where we were to have lunch, was a 10 minutes ride in the coach. Entering this museum really is to step back in time!

Chairman's Ramblings Apologies again for the delay in issue; we still need a Grapevine Editor! So some comments may be out of date!

It was after some 35 years of membership that Beryl and I attended our first ‘monthly’ local branch meeting and even then it was only because we had friends staying with us and they were to be the giving the talk that evening! So please do not take this as a grumble that most members never attend a branch meeting; it wasn’t why we joined and you may feel the same way.

However, whilst branch meetings serve a real purpose and are of interest to those who attend regularly, they are subsidiary to the purpose of the association. Equally, branch meetings are not the main business of the local branch committee; our main focus is the health of the waterways and waterway environs both generally and particularly within our branch!

In common with other branches Chiltern urgently needs new committee members; we need 2 or 3 people who share our interest. As committee members we are NOT directors or trustees of a charity and do not have to answer directly to the Charity Commission. It need not be onerous; we have 6 meetings a year and the summer meetings are usually handled via e-mail, so meetings take up around 12 to 15 hours per year, Involvement between meetings need be no more that an hour a month; when it takes more time than this it usually means you are pursuing something of personal interest to you! Actually and if you have an aversion to committees, then we can still use your help!

The four roles we really need help with now are ‘Secretary’, Publicity Officer’, ‘Grapevine Editor’ and ‘Website Editor’; do they sound too much?

So what do we mean?

Secretary:- send out the agenda and take the minutes of committee meetings plus the branch AGM. Publicity Officer:- maintain circulation list of local organisations and advise them of our branch activities.

Grapevine Editor:- chase and consolidate copy for this magazine and if you want to do it then production in Microsoft Publisher.

Website Editor:- keep branch pages of the IWA website current; liaise with committee and Publicity Officer and IWA HO Branch Support Officer.

None of these jobs require you to be a committee member; the roles of Publicity Officer and Grapevine Editor could be carried out without attending committee meetings.

So please give it some thought and if you think you might be interested in helping, then contact me or another committee member; our contact details are on the back page of this magazine.

Franprix supermarket stores in Paris are being supplied through a new multi-modal and urban transport chain solution. In this innovation, the last transport leg between regional distribution centre and retail shop occurs via waterways. The shipment is transported in a special container, sent from the warehouse to a river port in the periphery by truck, then by barge to the centre of Paris, shipped on the Seine river for a distance of 20 km to the Quai de la Bourdonnais in central Paris. From there another truck transports the containers to the shop on a very short trip.

This project benefits: • the traffic on the roads to and from central Paris, with less trucks kilometres, reducing congestion and other negative external impacts of road freight transport • the environment with about 250 tons of CO2 savings/year • the Parisians, with less congestion, pollution and noise • the supplied stores and their customers, with the guarantee to deliver stores on time.

This project was enabled by: • The willingness and the decision of a retail company (Franprix) to experiment with more sustainable deliveries, • The availability of a quay in the centre of Paris, that was fitted out by Port Authority of Paris • A public-private partnership to reduce truck traffic inside Paris, and the technical feasibility of the solution • The know-how of the door-to-door, multimodal logistics service provider Norbert Dentressangle.

by Jeremy Batch. Very soon, we will have exhausted his inventory of talks, so we must enjoy those that remain before the tap runs dry. This talk, though not devoted to waterways will, none the less, be up to his usual excellent standard. Its content is as its name suggests.

Wed 22nd Feb Canals of Paris John Willis John, now retired, was Head of Planning for the Cross Rail project, was closely involved in the planning of the Docklands Light Railway and was similarly engaged with the Jubilee Line extension. Indeed, he has written a book about the latter. He is a member of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust with a specific interest in the stewardship of the Crofton Pump. And in his spare time, he is a potter.

From the Region Chairman I hope you have had an enjoyable summer.

This year Janine and I decided to join one of the Birmingham Canal Navigation Society’s Explorer Cruises. These are run several times a year to encourage those of us who are not familiar with the BCN to travel around the network.

The cruise was very well organised with society members at each lock flight to help us on our way. On several evenings we had entertainment laid on or were near good food outlets. My favourite evening dinner was at the pie factory at Tipton. It is on our list of places we must visit again. Whilst we were on the trip we had the opportunity to walk up the line of the Bradley lock restoration project. This is a new project which will, when completed, connect the Bradley arm of the BCN to the Walsall Canal.

Summer is a quiet time for progress on ongoing IWA campaigns and initiatives. We are still working on trying to get the Environmental Authority (EA) Navigation transferred to the Canal and River Trust (CRT); we believe this is the best way to ensure the long term future of EA navigations, . We understand that CRT and the EA have set up a joint working which will report back to CRT trustees, by the end of the year, on progress on a proposal for the transfer. In the meantime we have identified four categories of navigations, those at present administered by EA where the Agency is the navigation authority, and those manage by them under byelaws. These we believe should all be transferred, to CRT. There are some navigations where the Agency just owns structures that are used for navigation but they are not the navigation authority and don’t manage the navigation. These cases will need to be considered on their individual merit. Finally there are a number of waterways where the navigation position was uncertain, and in these cases there was probably little that could be transferred so they should not normally be included in the transfer.

At the Annual General Meeting in September members overwhelmingly approved the new Articles of Association. These replace those that had guided the association, with occasional modification, for over 40 years. It would be nice to think these will support the associations work for the next 40 years!

As you may know CRT have announced that they will be consulting widely on a review of the structure of boat licencing. At national level we believe this is a one-off opportunity to address some of the issues caused by the current licensing system. We have a number of radicle ideas that we could suggest to CRT but I would like to hear from you on what sort of licence fee structure you think CRT should operate from April 2018. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Roy Chandler, of Chelmsford branch, on the award of the Cyril Styring Trophy. The Cyril Styring Trophy is the Association's highest award and is given each year to a member who has, in the opinion of trustees, made an outstanding contribution in furthering the Association's campaign. The award was for Roy’s dedication and hard work on the restoration of the Chelmer and Backwater Navigation and Paul Strudwick continuing leadership of his team in managing a IWA , Chairman London Region very successful navigable waterway.

Canal and River Trust—SE region It’s the countdown to Christmas and the South East Waterway team and volunteers are busy preparing for our first ever Illuminated Boat Festival at Foxton, which takes place on Saturday 17th December. If you fancy taking part, there’s a £250 Midland Chandlers voucher for the best dressed boat, which has been generously sponsored by Grand Union Narrowboat Services. The festivities start at 3pm and there will be lantern making in the Boiler House museum & festive boat trips.

The Illuminated Boat parade with pyrotechnics and fire sculpture starts at 6pm followed by the lantern procession at 6.30pm.

As part of the Trust’s £43 million restoration and repair programme to canals and rivers across the country, we have planned a series of Open Days to showcase the work that we do. In the South East we are holding an Open Weekend at Stoke Bruerne on 11th & 12th February 2017. It really is quite fascinating to venture inside the lock chamber and learn about brickwork repairs and lock gate replacement. Working with the University of Northampton, we are also hosting a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) Day for 100 students at Stoke Bruerne during the stoppage. In March we are planning an Open Day at Tringford Pumping Station, with tours of the building and an opportunity to ‘Meet the experts’ involved in the fabric repairs.

The Destination Management Plan (DMP) for the Milton Keynes canal corridor is progressing well. We have been consulting stakeholders to agree a strategy and action plan for enhancing the boater and visitor experience, growing visitors and raising awareness of the Trust as guardian of the waterways. You may not know that Milton Keynes celebrates its 50th birthday in 2017. Well we have decided to take the canal centre stage in the MK50 celebrations. And to this end we are developing a ’50 things to do on the waterway’ campaign working with in partnership with local stakeholders. The campaign will run throughout 2017 and promote existing canal festivals and canal clean ups alongside new events and activities. There will be something for everyone with boat trips, angling, canoeing & paddle boarding tasters, guided walks, theatre, floating concerts and, of course, an Illuminated Boat Festival in December.

So far this year we have welcomed 8 new adoptions to the South East Waterway family bringing our total to 22. As engaging young people in their local waterways is a priority for the Trust, we are really excited to have our first pocket adoption by Upton Meadows Scouts; our first academic adoption by tourism students at Northampton University; and Harding House adoption of the Aylesbury basin. The importance of volunteering to the Trust cannot be underestimated and so far this year, volunteers across the South East Waterway region have clocked up a staggering 36,019 hours. We are well on track to achieve our annual target, which is just shy of 50,000 hours. So a big thank you to everyone who has contributed to this magnificent achievement!

mend the home made faggots; they were as good as they look. Others headed for Hobbs’ Fish & Chip Shop (cooked in dripping), the pub or the Rolfe Street Café. Next we enjoyed the Steam Funfair and of course Beryl headed for the school and sat in a lesson as a pupil; complete with slate and chalk; you have to put your hand up and wait to speak!

We had a comfortable and leisurely start at 0930 on Saturday morning and off to The Globe Inn, Snarestone. The Globe was to be the start and finish point of our visit to The Ashby Canal; we were met at the Globe by the Chairman of The Ashby Canal Association (ACA) and the Ashby Canal Trust. The ACA are the active restoration group and primary hosts of our visit. A short walk from the pub and we were canal-side at the entrance to Snarestone Tunnel and somehow Colin had arranged for a narrowboat to exit the tunnel shortly after our arrival!

The weather forecast was for rain but so far so good! Now a pleasant walk along the towpath to Snarestone Wharf, the home of the ACA; across their swing bridge and a brief stop for coffee and a look for bargains amongst the items donated for sale. Now the weather starts living up to the forecast. We move off again and see the old pump house just behind the wharf. Interestingly the pump house had nothing to do with the canal as it provided the water supply for Hinkley. Although situated adjacent to the canal, coal for the pump boiler was delivered by horse and cart from the nearby mine at Measham.

However, the beams from the old pump have been rescued by ACA member Rod Smith, and erected on a plinth at the wharf. the original iron railings have also been placed in position. The pumping station is now a private dwelling. Back across the swing bridge and we continue our walk to the limit of the connected section at the re-built bridge 62. Unfortunately, local planners insisted on the rather ugly square concrete former but ACA were able to rescue and re-use Bridge 62 original bricks from the old bridge. Now we look towards the future; photo to the left; immediately in front of us is the proposed site of the new Gilwiskaw Aqueduct which is located at a site designated as a Special Area of Conservation. ACA are raising funds for the Aqueduct by selling bricks, which for £100 can be engraved; Chiltern Branch have donated £200 for 2 bricks engraved with ‘IWA Chiltern Branch 2016 visit’. You may just be able to make out a yellow marker post; this shows the proposed route for the next stage of restoration that will eventually connect to the restored length at Moira.

Chiltern Branch 2016 trip (cont’d) We then walked back to The Globe Inn for a sumptuous buffet; there was so much good food that as we left the locals were tucking in to what still looked like a full table!

Back to the coach and a short drive to Moira Furnace; unfortunately the rain had now set in so instead of the intended guided tour of the furnace, mostly outside, we had a very interesting presentation in the visitor centre. The Earl of Moira had the furnace built in 1804 to take advantage of the iron ore and abundant coal which were present underground in the surrounding Ashby Woods area owned by him ; built alongside the Ashby Canal for easy transportation. However, a mixture of poor design and management meant the furnace output was unreliable and it had stopped making iron by 1811 and was then used as housing by the local collieries for the mine workers and their families. The attached foundry continued to be used for some years, using brought-in pig iron, though it was demolished later in the 19th century. Meanwhile the bridgehouse and the engine house, which was a separate building to the side of the furnace, were converted to dwellings and survived. However, by the 1970s they had become derelict and affected by mining subsidence and the engine house was demolished. After pressure by Philip Riden and from Leicestershire Industrial History Society, the furnace and bridgehouse were scheduled as an ancient monument. The site was acquired by North West Leicestershire District Council in 1981, who sponsored a Community Programme to restore the site and develop it as a museum and country park. Sunday, a 9 am start and we drive to the Severn Valley Railway at Kidderminster station . We were all given ‘Freedom for the day’ tickets, which allowed unrestricted travel for the day between Kidderminster and Bridgenorth. This approach worked very well; this short railway visits so many interesting towns and locations, it would be impossible to enjoy it all in one day; it allowed each of us to tailor our own day, with the only stipulation being the time we had to be back at Kidderminster for the coach journey home. Since we had been to neither town, Beryl and I elected to go all the way to Bridgenorth , have lunch, explore and then take the train back to Bewdley. The river divides the town into HIGH town and Low Town, the two being linked by seven sets of ancient donkey steps, the route we took to High Town, and a Victorian funicular, the Bridgenorth Cliff Railway; now it felt like a visit to the seaside!

Now to Bewdley; a very pretty little town and clearly more prosperous today than Bridgenorth! Again the station is across the river Bewdley riverfront from the town but this time via a stone bridge with classic arches. Before walking right into the town, we stood and listened to a folk/jazz group playing on the ‘pier’ at the bottom of the steps on this view of the riverfront. Having very briefly explored the town we decided we must come back and spend more time in this fascinating area. Now it was time to get the train back to Kidderminster for the coach journey home. The journey home was good until several of us received google message about delays on the M40; Ray took avoiding action, which unfortunately inconvenienced some people!

We rated our overall experience highly and fully intend to do it again next year, confident that Colin will again deliver a memorable ‘Chiltern Weekend Away’.

‘The Rosery’ goes Solar This summer I decided to fit our boat, The Rosery, with a solar panel to extend the time we could stay at places of interest and at events without having to run the engine to charge the batteries. I hope my experience might be helpful if you want to go down the same route.

I started by listing all the electrical items on the boat and how much power they use. I then made a guestimate of how much we use them each day.

My table looked like this:I then added together all the Ampere hours used each day in column five of the table to get the amount of energy I needed from the solar panels every day. In the case of The Rosery this came out to around 60 Ampere hours.

To work out the size solar panel needed (in watts) I multiplied the 60 Ampere hours by 12volts (our battery voltage) which came to 720 watts and dividing by the number of hours the panel would be charging the battery. To allow for the boat being in partial shade, the panel not being at the ideal angle to the sun, heavy cloud cover, etc. I decided to assume the panel would only be capable of giving the equivalent of full charge for 6 hours a day. If you intend to rely on solar power during the winter you should think about halving that time. For The Rosery I calculated we needed a 120 watt panel and settled for one that gives 100 watts.

The next thing I had to decide was what type of controller we should use. There are two types on the market and both are widely used to charge batteries with solar power. The two types are PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) and the more expensive MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) controller. I went onto Google to find out which was best for our boat. In the end I came to the conclusion that the PWM controller was best for static situations such as a mobile home, traffic signs that sort of thing. The MPPT controllers are more sophisticated and will adjust themselves to harvest the maximum power from the solar panel so this was ideal for our situation.

After searching on line and a visit to our local caravan shop I decided to purchase my equipment over the internet from Bimble Solar of East Sussex (other suppliers are available). The reason I chose this firm was that they were very competitively priced and offered a Solar Panel Kit with MPPT Charge Controller, Panel Mounting Kit and Cable. All I had to purchase was an isolator to go between the output of the controller and the boat battery.

Installation was simple on our boat because all the power equipment and switches are all housed in a cupboard by the back doors.

This included a suitable point to connect the output of the solar panel controller to the battery. In the end I did not use the cable entry supplied with the kit as it was too large for where I wanted the hole through the roof. Instead I made my own using conduit bits obtained from a local electrical factors.

The solar panel on the roof of The Rosery So how did it work in practice? Well there was several problems. For a start when I did my calculations I had assumed that I would install a new low energy fridge. Unfortunately by the time we set off for a summer cruise I had not got round to doing this. The old fridge is not very efficient and uses a lot of power. Even so with the solar panel we were able to stop for several days without having to run the engine. The time depending on how much sunshine there was each day. Now the solar panel was fitted The Rosery had three systems for charging the battery. The solar panel’s control system tended to get confused and would sometime lock the output off, if it was asked to operate when the engine was running. Similarly the shore powered battery charger locked off if asked to operate with the solar panel. The answer to these problems was to leave the solar panel switched off when the batteries were being charged by one of the other systems. Hopefully we will replace the fridge before next summer and should be able to run the boat using solar power for several weeks without running the engine or connecting to shore power. Despite the problems we are pleased with the result of this installation and would recommend solar!

Chiltern Branch Meeting Venue Directions: Little Chalfont Village Hall is in Cokes Lane which runs south from a mini-roundabout junction with the main A404 road between Rickmansworth and Amersham. The hall is located by the Library and there is a Car Park. It is approximately 600m from Chalfont & Latimer railway/tube station.

Access to the hall is on the flat and so offers easy access. There are also toilet facilities for disabled members.

You don’t need to be on a Committee!

There are those who do and those who don’t get involved with volunteering. If you’ve never tried it you will never know what you are missing. It will liven up your life, get you out of the house, give you some exercise, expand your social life whilst making some new friends, and not least you will have some good laughs. You will benefit from all these things and more, plus feel good that you have achieved something that benefits not only yourself but also others on our waterways!

So why not come and join our festival team? preparing and exhibiting for the IWA at the Rickmansworth and Slough Festival in 2017.

We need helpers for setting up before and packing up after the Festival.

Can you help us with transport, do you have a van, MPV or trailer for transporting tents and jumble to and from the Festival.

Are you knowledgeable about the IWA or the boating and canal scene; we have a position for you on our IWA stand.
