6. Treasurer’s Report.

The Treasurer’s report and accounts were available in Appendix 5 of the AGM booklet. There were no questions for the Treasurer.

7. The Future of the Branch

The Chairman outlined the position the Branch Committee now found itself in; ie Stephen Foote and Peter Webb intended to leave during the coming year. This would leave only 4 remaining members, all of whom have been serving for many years. The Chairman suggested that the Branch would likely fail unless there was an infusion of new blood promoting new ideas and asked members to step forward. Robin Adams offered his services. The Chairman greatfully accepted his offer and Robin was duly co-opted.

There followed a constructive discussion regarding the direction in which the IWA was heading, with concern being expressed at the apparent constant round of changes in personnel at the top of the organisation. The Chairman stated that, as a result of such concerns being raised at a previous General Meeting, he had asked Paul Strudwick (IWA Trustee and London Regional Chairman) to come and address the assembled meeting. However, neither Paul, nor any other Trustee was available on the arranged date. The committee had, therefore, invited Paul to come and talk to Branch members about the recent restructuring exercise at Head Office and the IWA’s aims and objectives at our next scheduled general meeting on Thursday, 24th October. The previously notified talk about The History of the Cut-off Channel was to be postponed until November

8. Any Other Business.

There was no other business.

9. The Chairman closed the meeting at 8.29pm.

Ouse News - Appendix 3: Chairman’s Report 2024-2025

Locally, our friends at the Environment Agency have been dispersed to assist in other regions, leaving theAnglia Region poorly served. At the time of writing the EA staff are stretched to the extreme, dealing with substantial flooding throughout the country.

I would like to thank the branch committee members for their work and support throughout the past year.As often stated, we would welcome new blood to serve on the committee, as our numbers are steadily diminishing and none of us are getting any younger.

As always, I would like to thank our Ouse News advertisers for their continued support. Their contribution helps us pay for items such as room hire and administration expenses.

Lastly, I would like to thank those members who are not active in the organisation, but continue to renew their membership every year because they support the ideals of the IWA.

We intend to present another interesting branch programme in the coming year and look forward to meeting you all.

Ouse News - Appendix 4

Ouse News - Appendix 4: Secretary’s Report 2024-2025

It’s déjà-vu! There is no boating possible –again because of heavy rainfall and strong stream advice being in force. This past year has, again suffered badly and coupled with the standard poor maintenance performance of the EA which has now culminated in the last boat hire company on the river announcing that it is abandoning the hiring element of their business. The factors that have brought this about also apply to individual boaters so it is hoped that the Agency will learn lessons and up their game at last. We can but hope, although it’s likely to be a forlorn hope.

The March meeting, as usual, incorporated the AGM. At that meeting nobody was re-elected! Despite repeated appeals for new members to the committee nobody came forward prior to theAGM, although RobinAdams did so later and was co-opted. You will note that Robin will be formally elected at the forthcoming meeting. Stephen Foote will be re-elected for another three year term but yet another, Peter Webb has decided to stand down after many years.

The full minutes can be seen elsewhere. The perennial appeal for members to join the committee because of dwindling numbers needs no repeating, but is going to be!

Nomination forms can be sent to the Secretary or completed prior to the start of the meeting. A nomination form is appended to the agenda, please consider this seriously.

The short formal element of the meeting was followed by the traditional address from the EnvironmentAgency.

Cont’d:

There was again no “away day” during this year as there did not seem to be the interest. Perhaps this can be re-instated in the not too distant future –comments and opinion on this would be helpful. The October and November meetings were as well attended as any and both were well received.

The branch membership continues to slowly decline. Between March 2024 and January 2025 there was a relatively low fall of 2.75% decline in branch. This is disappointing but it continues to fare better than the national trend which saw a 6.8% reduction over the same period.

On a more positive note the branch accounts remain in a healthy state.
