The Annual General Meeting This was held on 18th March. Minutes, a report and a list of committee members are included.
Out and About I am writing this on Easter Monday with strong winds and rain outside but things are sure to improve so I have included details of things you might enjoy on our local waterways over the summer months. A selection of local launching points for trail boats, cruises on some local waterways, shorter trips on local restoration projects and walks along the River Foss. Of course it is possible to just travel along a local waterway and take a walk for any number of reasons. Use this summer to discover more about the waterways, navigable or not, in our branch area.
Social meetings in the coming months Our Chairman and a group of helpers have been working very hard to find interesting speakers for forthcoming social meetings. It is not an easy task and they try very hard to cover a wide range of waterway and linked topics bearing in mind that with us being out on a limb it can be difficult inviting speakers who may have to travel a fair distance. We would like to have more people joining us on the third Friday of each month at Cottingham. The admission income, after paying the costs of the speaker, is one of the fund-raising channels which enable us to support local restoration projects.
GREAT NEWS but there is still MORE TO DO (see page 15) 2
THE BRANCH AGM A report The necessary and formal AGM meeting took just 30 minutes and included a report from Peter Scott, our Region Chairman and a trustee of IWA. He gave us information on many topics involving the waterways nationally including the hoped-for takeover of the navigations currently managed by the Environment Agency by the Canal and River Trust. Peter paid tribute to the work of Tony Martin, Chairman of the York branch, a member of the region committee and a past member of our branch. Tony died earlier this year. This was followed with a larger-than-normal refreshment break with savouries and cakes provided by members of the committee. This was followed by a light quiz on ‘Ferries’ where one or two were not recognised by even the most learned among us. It was disappointing that we have not managed to increase attendance despite the promise of a veritable feast and a short-as-possible business section. Your attendance gives your committee the assurance that you do support them. Next year ...? We were reminded by our treasurer that we have just 3 sources of income :- donations, profits from our fund-raising and information stall and any surplus from our social meetings. It is only through these that we can encourage and support our local restoration projects. Are you helping?

Apologies: Hamish Stewart. Minutes of previous meeting (Friday 20th March 2015): These had been circulated before the meeting. Proposed as a true record by the members attending. These were then duly signed. Reports of the Chairman and Secretary: These had been printed and given to those members present at the start of the meeting. An opportunity was given for members to comment. Acceptance of the reports was unanimous. Report of the Treasurer and presentation of the accounts for 2015: A copy of the accounts had been printed and given to those members present at the start of the meeting. An opportunity was given for members to comment. The balance at year end was £2,015-33. Deficit for the year of £943-57. Only one query, Barry Robins wished to know which organisations received a donation from the branch. Jack reported donations were to WRG, PCAS, BBPS and to Driffield Canal Partnership. Our thanks to Jack for his continued efficient handling of the Branch’s finances. Accounts accepted. 4
Election of Committee Members: Paul Waddington (Deputy/Social Chairman) and David Hamilton (Driffield) were retiring by rotation. Both re-elected unanimously. A.O.B: None.
INLAND WATERWAYS ASSOCIATION EAST YORKSHIRE BRANCH Chairman’s report for 2015 presented to the Branch AGM Friday 18th March 2016 I can report that we, with the help and support of our members, have enjoyed another successful year in respect of raising funds and keeping our membership fairly stable. BRANCH COMMITTEE Our committee meets approximately every two months and is well attended (most probably for the home made scones supplied by our Secretary for the meetings!) Our committee is made up of members representing the main waterways in our branch area and this is a great help in keeping us all informed about events. We also welcomed our Regional Chairman to one of our meetings. We continue to support Driffield and Pocklington in their efforts to open more of their waterway. Both are making great efforts to do this and it is good to see some positive moves. The Beverley Barge Preservation Society organised the first World Barge Pulling Championships on the beck. This was very well attended and attracted lots of publicity on radio and TV. Your IWA branch was present with their stall raising funds for the branch.
I thank all our committee for their help and support throughout the year. 5
FINANCE Our fund raising efforts throughout the year again enabled us to make grants to three of our local waterways. The Pocklington Canal, the Driffield Navigation and the Beverley Barge Preservation Society. We also made a contribution to the Waterway Recovery Group’s van appeal. The WRG have worked both on the Pocklington Canal and at Driffield and make a real difference to many restoration projects around the country.
MEMBERSHIP As mentioned above, our membership has remained steady throughout the year. We welcome our new members and remember those who are no longer with us. Sadly Ivor Nicholson and Ray Kenyon passed away in 2015. Both, from Cottingham, attended most of our social meetings and Ivor had been a past speaker. They were well known to many of us, especially those who are also members of PCAS where Ivor was a regular member of crew for the trip boat New Horizons. SOCIAL MEETINGS We continue to hold our social meetings from September to May (except December) and have managed to find a variety of presenters. Numbers attending are still on the low side so please try to bring a friend or two. Suggestions for speakers are always welcome and one or two recently have been from members’ recommendations. In June and July we look for an ‘outdoor’ activity ,maybe with a walk or a boat trip and a meal at a convenient point. Watch out for details in the Branch newsletter or online at https://www.waterways.org.uk/east_yorkshire/east_yorkshire

WOLDS WATERS We are very grateful to Barry Robins who continues to produce our branch newsletter. He is very happy to receive contributions from members. Maybe tell us about one of your trips or waterways experience. Details of how to contact Barry are in Wolds Waters. VOLUNTEERS We took part again in 2015 at the Beverley Beck litter pick and at a Balsam Bash at the Pocklington Canal. Our stall was present at Pocklington and Beverley and thanks go to all the members who helped at these events. We resurrected a tradition in 2015 where a ‘Branch Cup’ is presented to the member who helped in raising the most funds for the branch. I was pleased to make a joint presentation to Chris and Dave Stones for all their efforts.

Hull Marina Contact Hull marina directly for advice about whether it is possible to launch a trail boat at the marina, and if so what are the current costs. Contact details are:Hull Marina Warehouse 13 Kingston Street Hull, Yorkshire, HU1 2DQ Tel No 01482 609960 Please Note:-In 2016 adjacent roadworks and associated equipment will be seriously restricting available berths in Hull Marina. Visiting boats are advised to contact the marina, no more than 7 days in advance of arrival, for confirmation of any available berths prior to arrival at the marina. Driffield Canal:-There are 4 possible launch sites:Brigham Bridge is the most accessible site with a slope into the canal and easy road access. Parking is limited, and please do not obstruct the farm access. The canal is shallow from a few inches, sloping to a couple of feet or more at the east bank. Recovery may be difficult without a 4x4 or a winch as the slope is muddy and trailer wheels sink into the mud. Some work is scheduled for early 2016 to improve the slipway and aid the recovery of boats. The sailing club has rights over the field adjacent to the bridge and may allow parking by prior arrangement for a small fee. Contact David Hamilton, tel no 07875 356651 Email dhamil2829@aol.com North Frodingham – has no ramp but plenty of parking and an honesty box for payment Driffield Riverhead – Plenty of parking and a ramp into the water but the ramp is too short which makes for a difficult pull out. Bethels Bridge – there is a ramp at Bethels Bridge but may be owned by the boat club. Contact them directly for information on availability. For more information and advice on boating on the Driffield canal contact the Driffield Navigation Trust 2-4 Bridge Street, Driffield, YO25 6DA
