H2O Talks Next, be inspired from these brief, but informative, H2O—“Health . . . Humanitarian . . . Opportunities”— Talks from two well-known guest speakers.

Hydrophilanthropy: What Can You Do? Michael E. Campana, Ph.D., Oregon State University Hydrophilanthropy refers to the practice of providing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) access to those who struggle to achieve these benefits that those in the developed world often take for granted. Campana, a long-time NGWA member and hydrophilanthropist, will show you what others like you are doing to bring safe water to the world’s forgotten people.

Gain insight on how the nature of groundwater quality —and subsequently private and municipal well systems— has been impacted from agricultural land-use practices, at both local and regional scales, during this presentation. You will also learn what is being done about this problem through the use of beneficial management practices that are being implemented worldwide.

The Darcy Lecture Series in Groundwater Science is made possible by philanthropic support from Integral Consulting Inc. and Regenesis.

Carlos E. Molano, PE Whether you’re a water well contractor, groundwater scientist, environmental engineer, or student, discover how you can use spreadsheets— in simple form without any programming or complex mathematics—to solve a wide range of groundwater problems. Learn how to apply “classic” hydrogeology concepts to “modern” hydrogeology concepts such as climate change, sustainability, and remediation.

The McEllhiney Lecture Series in Water Well Technology is made possible by a grant from Franklin Electric Co.

Special workshops: limited space— preregistration required Hands-on workshop— Hydrogeologic Logging and Lab Thursday, December 5, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Thom M. Hanna, RPG, Johnson Screens Discover how to get better project outcomes by using the Hydrogeologic Classification System for Water-Well Boreholes to improve the logs you write during this two-hour hands-on workshop. Groundwater professionals from the different industry sectors—drilling contractors, hydrogeologists, engineers—are all tasked with describing sample cuttings from boreholes drilled for water wells. The problem is that all have different backgrounds and have received various training in how to do so in a way that is consistent and meaningful to the others who need to use the logs. Often the logs, which become part of the permanent hydrogeologic record, are so poor or inconsistent, they cannot be interpreted for hydrogeologic assessment, but using the HCSWB can help to rectify this situation. You will use the HCSWB to log a suite of drill cuttings, and select filter pack and slot size for a municipal water-supply well. HCSWB provides a concise menu-driven format that ensures basic information is recorded, yet allows enough flexibility for describing unique hydrogeologic features. HCSWB also helps in documenting unconsolidated sediments so the relative hydraulic conductivities can be accessed based on grain size and location of significant water-producing zones that are observed during drilling. Space for this workshop is limited to 44 people; preregistration and payment of a $20 lab fee are required.

“This course w as not just dry facts and figures. It gave real worl d examples from a contract or’s point of view even th ough the presenter was an engineer. I thoroughly e njoyed it.” — Bill Spencer, Northwest Sta te Drilling Full-day workshop— Water Systems Primer and Refresher Friday, December 6, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. NGWA in collaboration with the Water Systems Council Designed for those new to the groundwater industry, as well as seasoned water systems professionals, you will develop and improve your troubleshooting and diagnostic skills during this full-day workshop. This class is especially recommended for those preparing to take NGWA certification or state licensure water systems exams, and for experienced pump installers and contractors seeking the most current information and application of recent technologies. Topics include: • Water systems and components overview • Proper selection and sizing of materials and components • Variable frequency drives (variable flow for constant pressure). You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the workshop (full-day attendance required). Space for this workshop is limited to 65 participants; preregistration and payment of a $20 fee are required. Please note this workshop is taking place at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel (Expo headquarters hotel).

Nashville, the Music City . . . and more!

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tour: Center Hill Dam Safety Rehabilitation Project Friday, December 6, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Tour Center Hill Dam in DeKalb County, Tennessee, to see firsthand what the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville District, is doing to amend seepage problems stemming from the original foundation treatment methods of the 1940s and the karst geology on which the main and saddle dam embankments are located. To date, the problems have cost millions of dollars in monitoring, subsurface investigation, and grouting expenses. In 2005, Center Hill was classified in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ dam safety action classification (DSAC) as DSAC 1, the highest priority for remediation. The Nashville District obtained approval in late 2006 to begin a major rehabilitation of the foundation, which includes pumping grout into the foundation, as well as a modern concrete barrier wall. The tour: A 15-minute group orientation will take place prior to departure. Participants are advised to wear season-appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes. CEPs: 3.5. You must preregister by November 8: As this is a federal project, due to the timeframe needed for security review/clearance, you must preregister by November 8. U.S. citizens will be required to provide full names and SSN or driver’s license number. Foreign nationals will be required to provide full names and complete passport information. Participation is limited to 40; registrations will be processed on a first come, first served basis. Cost: $65.
