Living in Waukesha County means enjoying the outdoors yearround. Our award-winning parks system has something to offer for everyone no matter the season. From skiing to swimming, biking to hiking, and Citizen Science or Science Fest, this guide will help you enjoy the natural beauty of our county through special events and programs while preserving its natural resources. Our programs can help us: • • • • •
Create opportunities for everyone to explore the outstanding natural resources in the Waukesha County Park System Protect the county’s lakes and streams by informing citizens on how property management decisions impact water quality Better understand how our actions impact the environment and how we can work collaboratively to conserve our unique natural resources through a variety of science-based programs Increase the quality of material recycled from households and businesses to reduce our environmental impact Protect the quantity and quality of groundwater resources in the county by promoting water conservation and groundwater infiltration

Friends of Retzer Nature Center’s Wild Winter Night
Saturday, February 8 VOLUNTEER WITH US 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. SEE PG. 35 $4 per person or $15.00 per family (children 2 years and younger are free) Cure your cabin fever and enjoy this wild winter adventure! Fly on over to discover the world of birds. There will be guided hikes throughout the evening and a candlelit hike trail, free snowshoe rentals (weather permitting), and a campfire with s’mores and hot cocoa. Explore the winter sky with telescopes (weather permitting). The Horwitz-DeRemer Planetarium will offer a special showing of Europe to the Stars at 6:00 p.m., 6:45 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. See page 20 for more information. The special event fee includes one planetarium show admission per person.
Spring Workshop Day - Presented by Johnson’s Nursery
Saturday, March 14 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Recommended for ages 15+ Registration not required, but recommended to reserve a spot by noon, Friday, March 13 Spend your day getting ready for spring through these free, expert-led workshops and programs. Come learn about gardening for pollinators, invasive species, home composting, sustainable home practices, and container gardening ideas. See page 17 for more information.

Kids Fishing Clinics
Muskego, Menomonee, and Fox Brook Parks Saturday, April 18 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (drop-in style) Recommended for ages 15 and younger Introduce fishing to your minnow. Equipment and bait will be provided. Knot tying, safe use of equipment, proper techniques, and safety issues will be discussed. Clinic is ongoing and typically takes an hour to complete all stations. Pre-registration is not required, but for groups of 10 or more call 262-896-8074. Free park entrance to all clinic participants.

Earth Week concludes on Saturday, April 25 with our annual Earth Day Celebration Finale. Retzer Spring Bird Count
Saturday, May 2 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Recommended for ages 8+ Join the Benjamin Goss Bird Club as they scout all areas of Retzer Nature Center for year-round and migrating bird species during the annual Retzer Spring Bird Count. All skill levels are welcome. Bring your own binoculars or use Retzer’s (limited quantity available.) Check-in will be near the center’s front entry doors. Master Naturalist Volunteer Training NEW!
Monday, July 20 - Saturday, July 25 Register by July 10 at www.wimasternaturalist.org This training will provide 40 hours of coursework in natural history, interpretation, and conservation stewardship. Trainings combine classroom instruction with field experiences and are taught by professional natural resources educators and scientists. Once trained, Wisconsin Master Naturalist Volunteers provide 40 hours of service and take eight hours of advanced training each year to maintain their certification and receive a recognition pin.
Master Gardener Volunteer Training
September - December Recommended for ages 18+ Registration is required and opens early August Waukesha County UW-Extension will teach participants about gardening and horticulture. Volunteers will then share that knowledge with others by volunteering at approved projects and activities throughout the year. Program is held three hours per week for 13 weeks. Our six-county region has an abundance of adventures and natural gems. Thursday, April 23 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Recommended for ages 8+ Register by Tuesday, April 21 Join REI for free to learn what you need to take your first (or second or third) camping trip. We’ll cover the basics including: how to be warm, dry and comfortable camping; gear and equipment necessities; ideas for fun activities, and great local areas to give it a try. Camping is a fun and affordable way to take a vacation - let REI help you get outdoors! No experience necessary!
Morning Bird Hike - with Benjamin Goss Bird Club
Friday, April 24 7:00 - 10:00 a.m. Recommended for ages 8+ This 1.5 mile easy hike is a great opportunity to learn about the birds found in Waukesha County and how they fit into our environment, habitat, and county. No expertise is needed, and all skill levels are welcome. Bring your own binoculars or borrow ours (limited quantity); cameras are also welcome. The hike is held rain or shine, so dress for the weather and meet in the parking lot area nearest to the park driveway entrance. Call for groups of 10 or more.

The Sun has shone on our world for 4.5 billion years. The light that warms our skin today has been felt by every person who has ever lived. It is our nearest star and our plant’s powerhouse, the source of the energy that drives our winds, our weather and all life. Join the alien “experts” – Hopeful and Skeptical – as they try to convince each other whether or not life exists beyond Earth. Follow their astrobiology arguments from the ocean floor to a journey across the galaxy. Water and “habitable zone” are fully explained in this exciting show.

Based on the award-winning children’s book by Dr. Jeffrey Bennett, this show follows the adventure of a dog named Max as he and his sidekick, Tori, look to re-ignite the human exploration of the Moon. It has been over 40 years since humans walked on the Moon. Max and Tori examine and follow the new scientific lunar discoveries, including the discovery of water and ice in and around the poles of the moon. 11:00 a.m.– 11:30 a.m. Enjoy your own lunch on the Retzer Patio. 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Join the Retzer Adventure as we explore the amazing nocturnal features of animals of the night: bats, raccoons and more.

This show teaches the basics of celestial movements using the planetarium as a giant teaching tool. It compares the movements of each celestial body explaining how you will find those objects in the sky throughout the different seasons, different times of the month and even that specific night.

This amazing program explores the possibility that an asteroid may have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Realistic and scientifically –accurate computer generated animations bring dinosaurs back to life in a big way! This show features some of the most catastrophic natural events that will ever occur in our world. We live our lives on our planet’s fractured crust “plates” that pull apart, collide, grind past each other, and even sink below one another, producing violent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and catastrophic walls of water known as tsunamis.

CONSERVATION IN THE PARKS

Take part in stewardship projects or help collect data within your community to assist with local conservation efforts. No prior experience is necessary. Citizen Science Programs Wetland Monitoring Strap on some boots and survey for sensitive species that inhabit local wetlands. Reptile Conservation Collect data on turtles, snakes, and lizards that live in the park system‘s natural areas. Bird Conservation Waukesha County boasts 72 eBird hotspots! We will observe wildlife from a distance and plants close up! Requirements 1, 2, 4, and 5 will be completed during this program.

Into the Woods Adventure Thursday, April 9 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. $9 per scout (10 scout minimum) Join a naturalist on a hike to identify native trees and plants, their many uses and their importance to our ecosystem. Identify useful things made from wood. Use growth rings to tell a tree’s life story and learn about the function of tree bark. Requirements 1-4 and 6-7 will be completed during this program. Into the Wild Adventure OFFERED ON Schedule your day and time SCOUT NIGHT SEE PG. 28 $5 per scout (10 scout minimum) Learn about bird flyways and wild creatures in their habitats and how to identify local animals. Merit Badge Days Join us for a week of merit badges—come to one or all! Merit Badge workshops are for children in grades 5 and up that are enrolled in the Boy Scouts of America program. Check-in at 8:15 a.m. Pick up at 4:00 p.m. Snacks provided, participants provide their own lunch. Fee: $35 for single day or $150 for the week. Minimum 10, maximum 16 per day. Adventures in Science ($10 per scout) Discover Adventures in Science at the Horwitz-DeRemer Planetarium and study the night sky. While watching the star talk, scouts are able to sketch the night sky over a 6 hour period by observing constellations like the Big Dipper and names of stars like Polaris. Finish the evening by building and launching a stomp rocket.
Sky is the Limit Scouts will discover that the sky is the limit during this visit to the Horwitz-DeRemer Planetarium. During the star talk and Star Signs planetarium show, observe constellations and names of stars in the night sky. After, explore jobs in astronomy within the literature found in the planetarium lobby.
*Any chaperone or sibling wishing to attend the planetarium show with their scout can pay $5 at the door on Cub Scout Night as space allows (maximum planetarium capacity is 90).

Nature Storytime Hike
Ages 4 - 6 1 hour or 1.5 hours with craft add-on This program is all about reading and roaming! Our naturalists will share a story and conduct an outdoor nature hike designed to complement the program’s theme. Choose from: Pond Adventure, Insect Investigation, Life in a Shell (turtles, insects, eggs, nuts and more), Trees, Seeds, Nuts and Leaves, or Camouflaged Critters.
Navigating Nature
Ages 5 - 12 1 hour If you like scavenger hunts, this program is for you! Teams will solve clues and complete fun tasks as they navigate their way around the trails on this wild nature experience.
Down at the Pond
Ages 5 - 12 1 hour Discover what lurks in the pond as we explore with nets to scoop up mud-covered critters. This interactive program gives children a close-up examination of the pond’s ecosystem. Mud risk: high. One chaperone per four children is recommended for children age 6 and younger. Program availability dependent on pond’s water level.
Insect Investigation
Ages 5 - 12 1 hour Children explore the insect world using sweep nets, guide books, and hand lenses to sample varied insect communities. See what 6-legged surprises we can find!
Land and Water Discovery
Ages 5 - 12 1.5 hours Can’t decide between insect or pond programs? Enjoy a combination offer that features components of both!

Art in Nature
Ages 5 - 12 1.5 hours Nature creates unique artwork all around us with beautiful colors, interesting patterns, and unusual textures. During this program, we will look for artistic inspiration on the Retzer Trails and create an art piece or nature journal to record the art we found in nature.
Animal Adaptations - Indoor Program
Ages 5 - 12 1 hour or 1.5 hours with hike add-on Enjoy a visit from the Retzer teaching animals! See how an animal’s physical and behavioral traits can help it survive as we explore the concepts of habitat and adaptation. When a hike is added, an art project will be substituted in case of inclement weather.
Retzer Nature Center’s Cancellation Policy Programs must be booked at least 21 days prior to program dates. Fees must be paid at the time of booking or 21 days before program date. If payment is not received at least 21 days in advance, the program will be cancelled. If you cancel a program within 21 days of the program date, we reserve the right to forfeit the program fee or issue a credit instead of a refund. Credit must be redeemed within the same calendar year unless otherwise noted.

Adaptations are a fun way to discover this hunter’s unique lifestyle. An additional fee of $3.00 per owl pellet will be applied (children can work in pairs).
