Mission

The purpose of the Wausau Region Chamber is to strengthen our member businesses and enhance our community by building business success.

Vision

We are the region’s indispensable source for business connections, opportunities, and solutions.

HISTORY Founded on March 11, 1912, a report in the next day’s newspaper stated, “With an earnestness and enthusiasm unprecedented in local movements of this kind, the citizens of Wausau to the number of five hundred or more met last night in the civilization of a society having for its object the promotion of the welfare of the city.” In its early years, the Association, as it was then called, focused on appointing a committee to ‘look after entertainment of visitors and do what we can to secure other conventions for Wausau,’ developing plans to make Wausau a ‘greater buying center,’ forming a committee to make Wausau safer from fire, and developing new industrial prospects. The organization devoted many of its resources to retaining and attracting new businesses to the area. It also promoted tourism, raised money

for improving the road between Wausau and Merrill, and encouraged better relations between the city and surrounding communities. In May 1916, the organization changed its name to the Chamber of Commerce, reflecting a broadening of interests. In 1999, the Wausau Chamber of Commerce became known as the Wausau/Marathon County Chamber of Commerce. In 2003, the Chamber adopted the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce name. While the name may have changed, its mission and goal has remained a constant. Today, as in 1912, the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce works to make the whole region a better place by building business success.

PASSING OF THE GAVEL

I

Marco Espinoza Greenheck Fan

am looking forward to another great year for the Chamber under the leadership of Melissa Kampmann and the entire Board of Directors

Also, I would like to give a special thanks to our dedicated and enthusiastic Chamber staff. It is in large part through their efforts that our Chamber continues to be an indispensable resource for you through the educational, advocacy and networking opportunities that they create and support. Respectfully, Marco A. Espinoza, 2014-2015 Chairperson

D

uring my five years serving on the Board of Directors with the Chamber, I have witnessed a lot of changes in the group’s programs, events and initiatives built around feedback from members. E3YP and the Workforce Hub were formed in recent years with the goal of addressing workforce development issues in our community.

The Chamber also continues to form new partnerships to Melissa Kampmann achieve its strategic plan. One example is the recent partnership with the DC Everest School District to launch the Ruder Ware first YEA! program in our area. The program will guide high school students with an entrepreneurial spirit through the creation of a real business. Finally, the Chamber was instrumental in partnering with local community members to apply for the America’s Best Community competition. A $50,000 award has already been won as Wausau moves ahead as a quarterfinalist. The Chamber’s staff cannot carry out their programs, events and initiatives without the work of many dedicated volunteers. I look forward to working with these volunteers and the staff in the coming year. I am excited about the great things to come for the Chamber and our region. Respectfully, Melissa Kampmann, 2015-2016 Chairperson
