Economic Outlook program will offer new tools, strategies for members

By David Eckmann, President/CEO ike many communities throughout Wisconsin, the greater Wausau region is experiencing strong economic growth while grappling with the talent shortage. Many business firms, small to large, are leveraging technology to fill the gaps in production, service, and generate new business. Here at the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce, we continually seek partners and collaborators that offer services which help our organization and members to seize new opportunities or overcome challenges.

L

At the 2018 Economic Outlook program scheduled for Wednesday, March 14 at City Grill Restaurant & Event Space in Wausau, the Chamber will introduce a new interactive tool that has been developed by Mark Lange and his team at the UW System Division for Business and Entrepreneurship. Business intelligence information developed and offered by the Business Dynamics Research Consortium (BDRC) will be made available to the smallest and largest of business firms, cutting across industry sectors. The array of tools

available, when employed by users, will empower business organizations to plan and position resources effectively. In addition to assisting businesses, the business intelligence tools are designed to also serve economic development professionals in our communities. Perhaps one of the greatest economic threats we face is the demographic shift – baby boomer retirements, reduced replacement populations, and an exodus of our younger generation to other parts of the state and nation. The Economic Outlook program will also offer new insight on one of the greatest challenges posed by this shift: retaining youth in the northern and rural areas of Wisconsin. A recent study completed at UW Madison sheds new light on why our youth are leaving the region and what we must do, together, to retain our younger generations in the greater Wausau area. This is an important topic that all of us need to pay attention to. To address this multi-generational challenge, strong partnerships between business, industry, government and notfor-profit organizations to develop and implement a talent development, retention, and attraction plan will be required. Without some form of comprehensive strategic thought and initiative, we rely on hope. Hope is not a strategy. For more on the Economic Outlook program, see page 2.

SBDC at UW-Stevens Point offers programming for Chamber members When the Chamber’s Dave Eckmann met with Melissa Meschke of the Small Business Development Center last year, he knew a relationship with the organization could benefit Chamber members and local business owners. “It’s a goal for all Chambers to have offerings to assist our local business owners.” said Eckmann, the President/CEO of the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber recognizes the importance of small, medium and large businesses in his community and the need for educational opportunities for them.” Meschke, the Director of the SBDC at UW-Stevens Point, along with Mark Speirs, the SBDC Consultant at UW-Stevens Point, developed a series of programs that will serve the business owners in the community. Both Meschke and Speirs have a background running small businesses and have used that experience, along with feedback they have received from community

Member News As flu activity increases across the country, Ascension facilities in central and northern Wisconsin provide a number of options to seek treatment if needed. Ascension Emergency Departments offer 24/7 availability at Hospitals throughout the region and Urgent Care locations in Rhinelander, Merrill, Stevens Point, Plover and Stanley. “We are pleased to offer a mobile scheduling solution to meet the needs of our patients and improve access to care,” explains Vanessa Freitag, Vice President of Ambulatory Services and Operations Integration, Ascension Wisconsin. By visiting, getascensioncarencwi.org , patients will be able to view the open appointments. Patients who use this service are subject to the same treatment evaluation processes as all other patients but rather than spending time in the waiting room, they remain in the comfort of their home. In the event of a delay, users receive updated projected treatment times via automated phone call and email. Online appointment scheduling is available for Urgent Care services which are intended for individuals with non-life threatening medical conditions such as the flu. On-line check in is also available for emergency room visits for non-life threatening conditions. Another way Ascension is providing convenient access and care to patients is through HealtheVisits, an online diagnosis and treatment program for more than 20 specific common medical conditions that do not require an in-person visit. HealtheVisits is available to all Wisconsin residents and visitors ages 2 to 65 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week and costs $35 out-of-pocket. For residents of Mosinee and central Wisconsin, a unique partnership has created expanded healthcare services for the community. For several years, Ascension Medical Group has been providing on and near site health and wellness services to employees of Crystal Finishing Systems at its Schofield location. “The Branch offered an outside perspective and new approach for a solution to an ongoing issue within our organization. The program had an immediate appeal because we have a passion for entrepreneurship, ingenuity, creativity and innovation.”
