Summit Highlights Techniques to Attract, Retain Workforce A Workforce Summit was held at the Center for Health Sciences Auditorium at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau on Tuesday, June 7, 2016. The program was designed to provide businesses in the region with tips, tools and access to resources to improve their ability to attract and retain employees.

STORY ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS YOU REPEAT THE MOST OFTEN: I started the business in 2012 because I felt clients were not getting the service that they were looking for. I came up with doing business just by a hand shake and not locking our clients into contracts.

I was taught that your word meant something and people would respect and want to do business with going back to the ‘old principles.’ Today we are 60 employees strong and doing 1 million in sales.

We have been a partner with Cleaning for a Reason since November 2014. We currently are cleaning the homes of nine cancer patients. What we do is offer free cleaning services to people undergoing cancer treatment. This way they can focus on their health while we take care of cleaning their homes at no cost to them.

CHAMBER HIGHLIGHT: One of our highlights is that this past year we did the Chamber’s Business EXPO. It was great to connect with so many people, clients, and businesses. The amount of people that stopped at our booth was unbelievable to me and the connections we made for Cleaning For A Reason were very valuable.

OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS: We as a company are 1 out of 8 janitorial companies chosen throughout the U.S to test new products that want to be introduced on the market in 2017. We produce data and reports on the products and they go back to manufacturing to make the adjustments. We have seen packaging changes, fragrances, and other things because of our import.

We are excited to see how this all will turn out and we can start implementing these new concepts into our company in 2017.

YEA! Class Wraps Up With National Competition Winners from the Young Entrepreneurs Academy National Saunders Scholarship Competition were announced on June 13 at the U.S. Chamber’s America’s Small Business Summit 2016.

Maxx Stewart, of Tacoma, Washington won first place and was named 2016 America’s Next Top Young Entrepreneur.

DCEverestHighSchoolsophomore Laney Hughes competed at the event and was in the running for up to $40,000 in college scholarship funding and business prize packages.

DC Everest and the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce have committed to running this program until at least 2018, but its longterm success lies largely with our local business community, whose engagement is critical. Volunteers and financial supporters are currently being sought to complete this year’s activities and begin preparations to launch the 201617 program. Contact the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce to learn more about how you can

support these young entrepreneurs and future business leaders.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy at DC Everest Senior High will expand for the 2016-2017 school year to include students from grades six to 12 and to include students from various schools in the region.

Students that are home schooled are also invited to participate.

Applications for the program are now being accepted. The application period will end at the end of the summer or when the program is filled, whichever comes first.

During the course of the 30 week program YEA! students will work closely with business leaders, community leaders and educators to come up with a big idea, pitch for real seed funding, and actually launch their own real business.

Becher-Hoppe Associates Inc announced the addition of Jed Mattmiller and the promotions of Chad Grundemann, PE, and Karl Kemper, EIT. Mattmiller will provide Civil 3D CAD, modeling, and technology development for the company.

While attending college, Mattmiller was a seasonal intern for the company. Gundermann has accepted the position of project manager in the transportation service area and has been with the company since 2010. Kemper is now a project engineer in the airport service area and has been with the company since 2013. All three hold Bachelor of Science degrees in civil engineering from Michigan Tech.

Culligan International recently awarded two Sterling Water Culligan dealerships with awards for revenue excellence in 2015. Sterling Water Culligan in Eau Claire and in Rothschild accepted the award at Culligan’s 80th Anniversary Bash in Huntington Beach, California in April. “We are so excited for the opportunity to accept not one, but two top dealer awards,” said Bret Tangley, president of Sterling Water Culligan. “The recognition epitomizes our commitment to serving our communities, as well as our pride in representing the Culligan name.” Awards are given to Culligan dealers based on revenue growth in their respective market size, either small, medium or large. The 25 dealerships in each of these categories to yield the highest growth year after year are chosen for the award.

Family Planning Health Services Inc has hired a new executive director, Jessica Scharfenberg. Scharfenberg’s duties involve managing 26 staff members and the operations at 20 sites.

Jessica comes from South Dakota with a Master’s degree in public health and a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Previously, Scharfenberg was the public health regional manager for the South Dakota Department of Health, overseeing 12 counties.

“Her background fits in well with FPHS’s mission and the nine counties that we serve” said Board member, Laura Scudiere.

“During the interview process, the board was impressed with her professionalism and enthusiasm for public health.”

Scharfenberg added, “I look forward to working with current community partners and creating new partnerships. Education and prevention are the keys to a healthy community, and through partnerships we can provide the needed resources to promote health within our community.” The agency had been recruiting a new executive director since May 1, 2015.

Ruth Dayton, finance director, assumed the role of interim executive director during the search. The organization serves Marathon, Langlade and Lincoln counties, and reproductive health clients in Adams, Juneau, Portage, Sauk, Taylor, and Milwaukee counties.

Member News Tim Knipper, installation specialist at Floorology, has successfully completed the Certified Tile Installer hands-on and written exams provided by the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation.

Certified Tile Installers are the only installers recognized by the Tile Council of North America and the National Tile Contractors Association as having proven their skills and knowledge through standardized, hands-on testing. Floorology is one of five companies in the state with this certification.

Kelly Knipper, president of Floorology, said, “To say that we are excited to receive this certification is an understatement.

It differentiates Floorology from every other tile installer and flooring store in the state by validating the superior knowledge and skills of our installation team.”

The Good News Project will host a Community Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, July 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event invites participants to explore and compete for cool prizes.

Teams will start at the Good News Project warehouse located at 1106 Fifth Street and then follow clues as they race around town collecting items, photos, and points for a chance to win.

Wisconsin Metal Manufacturers Alliance found that by 2017, more than 1,600 manufacturing jobs would need to be filled due to retirements and company expansions. To address this issue, the Wausau School District is developing high school manufacturing programs that are high-precision manufacturing learning labs designed to provide students with relevant, real-world experience in high-tech careers in manufacturing and engineering. “To ensure a skilled workforce, education, business and industry, and the community must work together to develop highly-skilled workers to maintain a successful, vibrant economy in central Wisconsin,” said Jon Winter, career and technical education coordinator for the Wausau School District. Greenheck made a $10,000 donation to sponsor the purchase of a 3-D printer for the program. Ten percent of the donation will go toward a scholarship for a student to attend a technical college for manufacturing. “The coming need for highly-trained manufacturing employees is startling. It’s great to see that Greenheck and the Wausau School District have teamed up to address this issue,” said Matt Spink, manager of recruiting at Greenheck. “A manufacturing career can be extremely rewarding. Simply put, the sooner we expose students to the exciting world of manufacturing, the better.”

Employees at Green Bay Packaging recently presented a $25,000 check to the Wausau School District to purchase equipment for the new and expanded manufacturing spaces at Wausau East and Wausau West high schools.

Greenheck recently announced it has partnered with Wausau East and Wausau West High Schools to develop manufacturing programs for students. In Marathon County, 21 percent of all jobs are in manufacturing. A recent study by the Central

Keller Inc, a design/build general contractor with offices in the Fox Cities, Madison, Milwaukee and Wausau announced the hiring of Jake Miller as a project manager based out of their Milwaukee location.

As a project manager he is responsible for project sales in the Milwaukee area along with management of those projects through completion.

Marshfield Clinic Health System announced its new ‘Caring for the Chippewa Valley’ plan to build a hospital with attached cancer care on land the Clinic has purchased near its Eau Claire campus. Officials said owning and operating a state-ofthe-art hospital in Eau Claire is an important move that allows the organization to offer the highest level of care locally while gaining more control over the cost and quality of care it has provided in the community for more than two decades. “Data from the Wisconsin Hospital Association shows residents in Eau Claire and the Chippewa Valley face some of the highest health care costs in the state, and building a new hospital puts MCHS in a strong position to start to change that,” said Dr. Susan Turney, CEO. “Our ‘Caring for the Chippewa Valley’ program makes us a truly integrated local health care system.”

Member News Marshfield Clinic Sports Medicine offers a summer program for high school students interested in learning more about the field of medicine through athletic training. The course gives instruction and hands-on experience in sports medicine and provide an understanding of injury management and protection techniques. Students completing this course, who on their own supplement it with CPR and first aid courses, can assist licensed athletic trainers of high school sports teams during the school year. “A student athletic trainer is under the direct supervision of a licensed athletic trainer,” said Jim Nesbit, sports medicine manager with Marshfield Clinic. “This experience gives students the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience needed to enter any field of medicine.” The six-week student athletic training course is taught by Marshfield Clinic athletic trainers.

The June Dairy Breakfast organized by the Partnership for Progressive Agriculture was held at Scott and Ashlee Uekert’s Farm in Marathon on June 5. The Woodson YMCA announces the hiring of head swim team coach, Jon Wilson. Wilson will lead the Wausau Area Y Swim Team. Wilson was most recently the head coach of swimming at Oshkosh North High School. Wilson also has served as head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at Ripon College, women’s head swimming and diving coach at Northern Michigan University and men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

Paul Clark, social studies teacher at Wausau East High School, and Jena Lawson, fourth grade teacher at South Mountain Elementary School, received 2016 Teacher Fellowships by the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation. E3YP Hosts First Merrill Event at Sawmill Brewing Company E3YP started their summer with a night of food, friends and fun at the Sawmill Brewing Company in Merrill on June 1.

The Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce and the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce announced a cooperative expansion of the E3YP initiative earlier this year and this event marked the first collaboration between the organizations.

Member businesses of the Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce are now able to take advantage of reduced E3YP membership rates and more diverse networking opportunities with young professionals in the greater Wausau region.
