Thankfulness abounds as year winds down By David Eckmann, President/CEO s the holiday season and the end of 2017 approaches, it is quite common for all of us to take stock of the past year. For many, we reflect on business success, organizational setbacks, personal enrichment and growth, or those that we may have lost or those that have come into our lives. In each of these, there is an element of thankfulness.
A
As your President/CEO, I’d like to take the opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the members of the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce. Without your support and commitment to the organization, it would be very difficult to meet the mission of strengthening our member businesses and enhancing our community by building business success. It is through your financial contributions and your generous giving of time and talent that makes the difference. We could not do what we do without your sponsorships, participation in planning committees, volunteering, or serving as a red coated Ambassador. Thank you. I’m extremely grateful to our Board of Directors. This past year, with assistance from our membership, the board engaged in creating a plan for our organization’s
future. For the first time, our organization has a strategic plan with designated measures. This tool will help guide our activities and better position resources. I’m looking forward to our board engagement efforts in 2018. I’m extremely grateful for the team of professionals working here at the Chamber. Vince Lombardi once said, “Individual commitment to a group effort, that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” As the leader of the organization, I’m here to let you know that I have a fantastic team here at the Chamber. They are committed to your success, to the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce and to the community which we call home. Beyond the team members, I’m grateful for the support our families provide. Quite often, our team duties require us to be away from our families at inconvenient times. I’d be remiss in extending my gratefulness to the valued partners we work with in our region, and there are many, too many to list. Our continued collaboration will lead to terrific results as we move into the new year. So, to each of you, I extend my appreciation. As we move towards 2018, the efforts to build a strong and vibrant community will require all of us to work together. We have so many opportunities in front of us. For that, I’m grateful.

Chamber News
Small Business Saturday is Big Shopping Day Small Business Saturday is this Saturday, November 25 and River District business owners are excited to help you shop local this season. Last Tuesday, Mayor Mielke proclaimed the date Small Business Saturday, and November Small Business Month in Wausau, in recognition and honor of all the good locally-owned businesses do for our economy. When you shop small at locally-owned businesses, your purchases provide a direct and real impact to the local economy. For every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, about $68 is recycled back in to the local community via taxes, charitable donations, purchases at other locally-owned businesses, and property taxes from the owners and employees who live in the area. Shopping at big box stores only keep about $43 of that $100 in the community, and approximately $0 from internet and online sales benefit the local economy. Besides supporting the local economy, there are 10 great reasons to shop local this holiday season: 1. Encourages local character and prosperity by supporting one-of-a-kind businesses, which provide an economic advantage to the area in an increasingly homogenized world. 2. Locally-owned businesses build strong communities by sustaining vibrant town centers, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships, and contributing to local causes. 3. Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community
and who will feel the impacts of those decisions. 4. Local stores often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know the customers, resulting in superior customer experiences. 5. Locally-owned businesses create more jobs locally, and in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than big box stores. 6. Entrepreneurship fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and in to the middle class. 7. Local stores in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services, making downtown stores more public resource-effective. 8. Local stores help sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers which are more environmentally-friendly because they are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and
www.wausauchamber.com
air and water pollution. 9. A marketplace of multitudes of small businesses creates cooperative competition, which is the best way to ensure innovation and low-prices over the long-term. 10. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not only on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices. Beyond the community economic benefits of shopping small, it could help your holiday budget, too. There is a selfie contest on Small Business Saturday in which shoppers are encouraged to post a selfie of themselves shopping local at any River District business and post the photo with the hashtag #ShopSmallWausau to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to any River District business of the winner’s choice. A winner from each platform will be chosen on Monday, November 27.

The Weiland Family: Jason, Kara & the Girls
HELP US HONOR DETECTIVE JASON WEILAND On March 22, 2017, four lives were tragically taken from our community. Jason was one of the four community members murdered on that day as he attempted to arrest the murder suspect. Families, loved ones and our entire community were significantly rocked and impacted by the tragic events of that day. Our law enforcement community lost Detective Jason Weiland of the Everest Metro Police Department. Jason was well liked, he had close friends at all the area law enforcement agencies. Jason chose a life of service, and he was dedicated to making a difference in his community. On May 12-19, 2018 in Washington D.C., Jason’s service to our community will be forever memorialized during National Police Week.
At the candle light vigil, Jason’s name will be read along with all the other law enforcement officers that were killed in the line of duty in 2017. Jason’s name will also be unveiled and permanently etched into stone at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial during this time. Many local officers have a strong desire to be present for this meaningful tribute to Jason and to make sure that Jason’s surviving family, Kara, Anna and Ella have the support they need during this difficult time. We would love to have our community partners show their support by helping us cover some of the expenses that Jason’s family and the 50-70 officers will incur to honor their brother in service to this community.
Help Jason‘s Family and officers from Everest Metropolitan Police Department, Wausau Police Department, Marathon County Sheriff’s Office and Rothschild Police Department attend THE NATIONAL MemORIAL SERVICE Honoring JASON.
