Business Advocacy - We Mean Business! By Sara Guild Inform. Educate. Advocate. Through these three actions, the Chamber’s Business Advocacy Committee (BAC) strives to show our members that “We Mean Business!” When I started my position as Government Affairs Director last fall, I quickly learned that these actions are the keys to remaining an indispensable resource in the region and have worked to ensure that everything the BAC does is with one or more of these in mind. However, I have also learned that not all of our members fully understand what is meant when we say that the BAC “informs, educates and advocates” for its members. Therefore, during the next few months, I am going to use this platform to clarify what each of these points mean to advocacy and, more importantly, how the BAC is implementing these actions for the benefit of its members. This month, we will focus on Inform. Inform: to communicate information or knowledge. This is the first step of advocacy. The Chamber believes that business is best prepared for success

when members are aware of what is happening in government and can use that knowledge to benefit their businesses. Knowledge empowers business owners to make informed decisions about how to best support their business, which is a win for everyone. We all know that the “red tape” of government is wrapped around every business, large or small. It can either hold a business together or tie it down, and that often depends on how informed a business is about its options. That is why the BAC strives to “inform” its members. A recent example of how the BAC has worked to inform its members is through last month’s electionsrelated communications. Members were notified in early August that the Chamber has dedicated a portion of its advocacy website to Elections Education. Members can visit this site to get informed about who is running for the offices impacting this region and quickly find links to information like campaign websites, Facebook pages and media interviews. Of special importance, members can also read each candidate’s responses to an extensive survey created by the BAC in July 2014. Candidates were asked to state exactly how they plan to address some very specific business-related issues that our members said were most important to them during a June 2014 survey. The BAC will continue to update this website and send out important elections(continued)

Another key way advocacy keeps its members informed is through the Coffee Talk program series. This series was recently approved to become a regular bi-monthly morning program; it will take place from 8 - 9 am on the 3rd Wednesday every other month starting in September, so mark your calendars! We are excited to announce that the September 17 program at Northcentral Technical College will feature a panel of transportation experts discussing issues and ideas related to local transportation from every level - municipal, county, regional and state.

Being an informed business owner is a critical part of being a successful business owner. The Chamber wants our members to succeed and keeping them informed about issues that impact business is just one way of helping them to do so. Next month I will talk about how being “Educated” also contributes to this success - and will officially introduce the newlycreated “Business Break” program series (keep your lunch free on October 20)! Until then, remember – when it comes to advocacy, “We Mean Business!”

Featured Member Nicole’s: Small Town Feel, Big City Fashion By Nicole Chickering Local businesses in the Wausau region are known to have a small-town feel while producing innovative products and ideas that set them apart from larger corporations or national chain stores. Throughout the years, many small businesses have come and gone but Nicole’s Boutique in downtown Wausau continues to thrive. Nicole’s, which is conveniently located at 620 N 3rd Street, was founded by Nicole Chickering seventeen years ago. Nicole had high hopes for success in the region and, by leading the way with her expertise in both style and business, she has been able to maintain a prosperous business since 1997. Nicole’s main goals are to provide items that can only be found in specialty stores and to keep up with the latest fashions while showing outstanding dedication and appreciation to her customers. Nicole’s Boutique carries everything from fantastic designer jewelry to unique ladies apparel and, of course, shoes! Nicole’s selection of clothing designers include the popular, hot looks of Free People, Joe’s Jeans, and Muse dresses. Those with a weakness for designer shoes will be excited to learn that they carry Brighton, Klub Nico, and even Jeffrey Campbell. Employees make every effort to help clients find classic looks for their everyday style, but can also readily create a “stand-out” outfit for that one special occasion. Many of the latest fashions are displayed throughout the store, making it convenient for clients to quickly locate the exact style they desire. This convenience ties into a key feature that sets Nicole’s apart from other stores – the dedication the business has to its customers. Nicole strives to show her appreciation by learning her shoppers’ names and remembering them the next time they come in. She

and her ten employees are also currently expanding their lines of dresses and shoes to accommodate the demand for the individualized styles of its Central Wisconsin customers. In addition, the employees regularly travel to fashion-forward markets to make sure they are offering the latest fashions from around the United States. The boutique has also begun collaborating with local artisans from around the Wausau area to design special pieces for seasonal collections. With the unique feel of a modern boutique paired with excellent quality customer service, it is no wonder this store has remained a go-to destination for women shopping in the downtown Wausau area for almost two decades. We applaud the success of this small business and know it will set a positive precedence for future businesses for many years to come.
