Please come out and support these great programs. CAP Services has been providing services to domestic abuse and sexual assault victims in Central Wisconsin since establishing the Family Crisis Center in 1978. THANK YOU The Waushara County June Dairy Thank You Breakfast Committee would like to thank the Park System for hosting this year’s Dairy Breakfast. The weather was beautiful and we had a wonderful day. Thanks, also, to all our wonderful volunteers. This event could not have happened without all those who helped with the breakfast. Your help is greatly appreciated. Finally, we would like to acknowledge those who donated items or services. Every year we depend on the generosity of our local community in support of the Dairy Breakfast. Every year, you all come through with generous gifts of time, money, products and prices. Shar-a-Gardeners Wild Rose Garden Tour features six gardens
The Waushara County Master Gardener Association (Shar-a-Gardeners) Ring Around Wild Rose Garden Tour will be held on Saturday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Six gardens in the Wild Rose area will be featured this year.
Springwater Covered Bridge Park
Unlike most ‘garden walk’ sites, this garden is owned by the Springwater Township. An authentic covered bridge, built by township volunteers, was completed and dedicated on June 2, 1997. Kermit and Shirley Jorgenson, who lived on the adjacent property, decided to provide a “private park dedicated to the public” on part of their property. They worked many years creating a beautiful and durable landscape with shrubs, flowers, pathways, gazebo, picnic tables and waterfall/pond Springwater Covered Bridge Park area. In 2010, the township was granted a onetime, $36,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources to be applied to the purchase of the entire property. The park is now maintained, with guidance from the town board chair, by Waushara County Master Gardeners and Springwater maintenance staff. The park, along 400 feet of the Pine River, will continually change as the long-range master plan includes a bog area, native plants and a meadow. The public is invited to picnic or wander through the park, sit and meditate on a park bench along the river and enjoy a variety of wildlife, including singing birds and butterflies flitting flower to flower, with a background of murmuring waters. There is no charge to use the park, but a box is provided for appreciated donations to help defray the cost of park upkeep. Several weddings are held in the park or on the bridge each year.
Roger and Carol Rosin
Roger and Carol Rosin have been farming their garden for about 20 years. You will find surprises at every turn – rock islands with overflowing native plants, grasses and perennials, a gazebo, and round corncribs covered by sprawling vines. All are full of flights of fancy, like patio furniture, on which to relax amid various hanging pieces of “art” or filled with a mix of bird and squirrel feeders. Another cornWaterfall garden at Roger and Carol crib covered in Rosin’s home grapevine secretly hides a hammock, metal works and cement pieces of garden art. Finding antiques and cleverly stacked rocks scattered through the gardens brings a surprise followed by a smile. See the waterfall go to a bedrock stream. Go to the great pond that Red Neck Farm provides, interspersed with whimsical objects like the showering Lady of the Lake. Take a walk through, then take it again to see what you missed because Carol plans her gardens to have “a little bit of SOMETHING.” You will say she has “A little bit of EVERYTHING.”
Butch and Helen Cox
Moving onto this former Christmas tree farm in 1997, Butch and Helen Cox started by planting the site to grass and gardens. Having lived in Florida previously, they were anxious to grow plants they couldn’t grow there and started with lilac trees, peonies and bulbs. Over the years, they added several islands of perennials, shrubs, herbs and vegetables, making changes Train garden at the home of Helen Cox as they found necessary, including an active compost bin to regularly amend their soil. In 2005, Helen decided she wanted a large cutting garden, fenced in from deer and bunnies, which worked out well because Butch got an idea from a garden magazine for a railroad garden. After attending many train shows, Butch began buying various G Scale trains, tracks, buildings, etc., and working out a plan for their “cutting garden.” They put in electricity, laid tracks, and built supports because the ground was not level, and added pilings to support the train’s weight. Then they added a small pond with a train bridge over it and a dry riverbed. While it’s a challenge to keep the plants “miniature” in this garden, they feel the best garden in their yard is “The Train Garden.”
Rachelle Towne
Rachelle’s 10-year-old garden surrounds her tiny home on a very narrow lot. This limited space is packed with plants, creating a beautiful, private garden, which provides food and space for her plant collection. Because Rachelle’s garden is surrounded on three sides by street, alleys and views of neighboring yards, many shrubs and fruit trees Rachelle Towne’s backyard garden help create privacy. Included in this garden are a potager (kitchen garden) of herbs, salad greens and vegetables, and many edible fruit trees and berries. This garden also contains numerous perennial flowers and natives, a large hosta collection, many lilies, hydrangeas, roses, clematis and succulents.
Larry and Nancy (Jirik) Martin Nancy has gardened at this site for 15 years. Her English garden is filled with annuals, perennials, over 50 hostas, and a variety of prairie plants. This charming lakeside home is landscaped to take advantage of the beautiful lake views. Terraced gardens brimming with perennials and annuals cascade to the shore. Container plantings are a colorful addition to the Gardens at the home of patios, where visitors Larry and Nance (Jirik) Martin
can sit and relax. Clever and unusual garden art grace her annual and perennial beds. A handconstructed fence is a beautiful and unusual feature of this garden.
Darrel and Marilyn Apps
After living out of state for nearly 40 years, late in 2005 Marilyn and Darrel Apps purchased a “fixer up” Queen Anne style house, built in 1900 by Robert K. Jones, the proprietor of the Wild Rose Hardware Store. Thinking an addition and restoration of this property could be a nice challenge, Darrel immediately began drawing up house plans. Soon realizing that house design was a little beyond his expertise, he hired an architectural designer from Last Designs of Waupaca. Darrel chose Arliss Sorenson of Wild Rose to build the addition, asking that it be completed by summer of 2007.The house design includes many windows to view the gardens. The front yard features the original buggy stepping stones, a semi-circle walk around them, and a large entrance planting of dogwoods, hydrangeas, yellow sumac, bulbs and various perennials for all growing seasons. A solid fence, constructed to tie the new garage, barn and home together, provides privacy, Darrel and Marilyn Apps’ parterre an enclosure for the family dog, and keeps the gardens rabbit and deer free. A pergola entrance to the backyard, with climbing roses and honeysuckle vines, adds a bit of mystery as you enter. Once inside, the visitor walks through a family sitting area decorated by large planters overflowing with annuals and tropical plants. Darrel is a daylily hybridizer and some of his introductions will be in bloom on tour day. Another marvelous area is a small parterre (a pattern of boxwood hedges filled with companion plants), providing vistas from the upstairs guest bedroom and the downstairs master bedroom. The surrounding fence has trellises with Clematis ‘Wisley.’ Describing the gardens, Darrel said, “Well, it’s sort of an English style with lots of plants selected specially for withstanding cold winters. I guess the best thing to say is that I like plants and we’ve got quite a few!” Master Gardener volunteers and homeowners will be present at each location to answer gardening question. Vendors presenting their art with gardening or a recycling theme will be available at the individual sites with their wares available for purchase. A door prize donated by the vendor will be given away at each site. There is a fee for the tour, and the tickets will have a map directing participants to each of the six locations. Tickets for Ring Around Wild Rose Garden Tour will be available from Shara-Gardeners members, in Wautoma at the Argus, Floral Expressions, Pioneer Floral, Candle Freak Gallery, and the Farm Market, in Plainfield at Russell’s Farm Market, in Wild Rose at Roseville and at Russell’s Farm Market, and on sites the day of the tour. Information will be available regarding the UWEX Master Gardeners program and the local Waushara County group, Shar-a-Gardeners, at each garden location. For more information about Ring Around Wild Rose Garden Tour, please contact Celine Pitzen at 920-787-0795.

Quitting Smoking
Tobacco has been present in the Americas for a long time, even before the arrival of Europeans. It was a popular trade item and had religious significance to the Native Americans. Tobacco was a major export for the American colonies until cotton replaced it in importance. Around mid-20th century scientific evidence began to mount relating to the harmful effects of tobacco. Smoking is responsible for 1 out of 5 deaths in the United States or about 443,000 deaths per year. Smoking causes cancer, emphysema, heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, blood clots, impaired wound healing, premature skin aging, and the list goes on and on. It is never too late to quit smoking, as health benefits are noticed almost immediately. Within 20 minutes of quitting, blood pressure and heart rate decrease. Within 48 hours, nerve endings and sense of smell and taste begin recovering. Within 1 year the risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half. Quitting smoking may be one of the most important decisions in a smoker’s life and there are some non-medication and medication methods to assist. Hypnosis, acupuncture, and support groups can help. Some people just quit “cold turkey”, without any aides at all. Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is a prescription medication can assist as well. Chantix (varenicline) is a prescription drug that actually works on the same pathway that causes pleasure when using tobacco. Chantix both reduces cravings and decreases any pleasurable effect you would get if you used tobacco while on Chantix. If you would like to pursue one of those options talk to your doctor and he or she may write a prescription for you. Another method to assist in quitting is nicotine replacement. The most common forms include gum, lozenges and skin patches. These methods provide a step-down mechanism to help taper off nicotine dependence. Depending on how much someone smokes there is a certain level of nicotine he or she would start with. It is important to read the box to ensure the appropriate nicotine dosage. Hookahs are not a safe alternative to cigarettes and expose smokers to much larger quantity of smoke and carcinogens. Beedies are a type of cigarette originating in India wrapped in a tobacco leaf. Beedies are unfiltered and expose the smoker to more nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. “Smokeless tobacco” products are becoming more popular as well. These electronic cigarettes are not safe and contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals, such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze. Prevention may be the best option. Teach kids from a young age about the dangers of smoking. If you or one of your loved ones is a smoker, remember there are tools to aid the process of quitting. It is never too late to quit. A pack-a-day smoker would save almost $3,000 per year by quitting.

A&W trailer in Wild Rose
As an A&W trailer/food stand makes its presence known in Wild Rose, cars can be seen stopping by as they did in years past for a drive-in atmosphere under varying ownerships. Located on the south end of the village along State Road 22 at the intersection of Roberts Park and County Roads G and H, Bryce Erickson could be found serving Jason Edgren a root beer float at the stand during a June 25 stop.
