Cyclists learn about organic farming

On Aug. 31, the Coloma Cycling Club rode to the home of Russ Brown for a tour of his organic farm and to hear the story of how he and his wife, Genie Merloyer, got started in the Coloma area. The couple work the farm themselves and they sell most of their produce either locally or at a farmer’s market in Illinois near their former home. Russ and Genie did a lot of research about growing organic crops before leaving Chicago and moving to Coloma, but they have found the sandy soil up here to be land that needs both nutrients and water. The cycling group was treated to snacks, which included crackers and radish dip (which everyone agreed was delicious), zucchini bread, and tomatoes from the farm. The group that listened to Russ explain the different rotations and challenges were Russ Brown (host), Rich Dittle, Wild Rose, Magaret Fladvid, Westfield, Rick Gilmore, Hancock, Jim Jennette, Coloma, Sandy Gilmore, Hancock, Joan Jennette, Coloma, Tom Pintar, Coloma and ride organizer, Virgil Cole, Wild Rose, Marcia Johnson, Coloma, Charlene Reilly, Coloma, Russ Clark, Pleasant Lake, Peggie Coffey, Westfield, and Diane Hughes, Wautoma. Not pictured is Susan Apps, Coloma. The club rides every Saturday through September and leaves from the Coloma Hotel at 8:30 a.m. All rides are about 15 miles and each rider brings his/her own bicycle, helmet, water bottle, and bicycle helmet. For more information or to volunteer to host a ride, call Susan Apps at 715-228-2401.

Parenthetical - for parents of teens and tweens

Are you looking for ideas to help navigate the many changes and behaviors associated with your teen or tween? Are you interested in learning about ways to handle common challenges and set limits with love and respect? Would you like to connect with other parents and professionals for anonymous answers to your tough parenting questions? If so, a new website, Parenthetical, http://myparenthetical.com, may be for you! Parenthetical is a little different than other sites you might visit. It was designed as a blog, website and social network for parents of tweens and teens. The website offers articles covering a wide range of topics, including why fathers matter, when you

don’t approve of your child’s friends, teen’s healthy use of media, table talk, etc. published by parenting experts. It also offers a blog and social network for parents. What parents contribute to the site through questions, comments and advice is the most important part of Parenthetical. The website’s goal is to

make Parenthetical a place where you regularly share your parenting thoughts and questions, connect with other parents who are experiencing similar issues, and receive trustworthy information on parenting and teen development. Because this site is sponsored by the University of

Wisconsin Cooperative Extension and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it is free, carries no advertising, and strives to be an unbiased and research-based forum for exchanging the latest knowledge. Check it out. It is a site worth visiting!

2013 fall hunting and trapping forecast available

Kemnetz wins 4-cylinder stock feature

Jeremy Kemnetz, Hancock, won the season-ending 4-cylinder stock feature on Aug. 30 at the Golden Sands Speedway in Plover. Kemnetz also finished second in the final points standing.

The 2013 fall hunting seasons are just around the corner and Department of Natural Resources officials are releasing the annual “Fall Hunting and Trapping Forecast” to help prepare hunters or trappers for their pursuits of upland and migratory birds, small game, deer, bear and furbearers. The forecast provides details and reminders on season dates and regulations as well as season outlooks, population numbers, and research updates. The 52-page forecast can be viewed at http://dnr. wi.gov/topic/hunt/documents/ forecast.pdf or at dnr.wi.gov by searching the keyword “hunt.” Inside the cover are words from DNR Sec. Cathy Stepp, sharing in the excitement, appreciating the role hunters and trappers play in conservation, and highlighting the opportunity to introduce someone new to the sport this year. “While your own anticipation of the season grows, consider sharing this excitement with someone new to hunting or trapping,” said DNR Sec.

Cathy Stepp. “Involving new hunters in your traditions will help strengthen the future of Wisconsin’s outdoor heritage, while also creating new memories with your friends and family.” Hunters and trappers participating for the first time ever, or those returning after 10 or more years away, can get a price break on many licenses. Wisconsin resident first-timers can buy a $5 annual license for many hunting and trapping seasons. Nonresidents also qualify for discount rates. Additionally, state residents who are identified as recruiters by three or more new hunters, trappers or anglers in one license year can earn points towards a discounted license for next year. More information on discounted first-time or recruiter licenses is available at dnr. wi.gov, search keywords “first-time buyer.” Questions on licenses or the fall seasons in general can also be answered by calling the DNR Call Center at 1-888-WDNRINFO (1-888-936-7463).

Hancock Community Center rummage sale

The Hancock Community Center committee held a rummage sale fundraiser during Hancock’s community wide garage sales on Aug. 31. “It was amazing how much support we got from the community,” commented Cindy Johnson. “Not only did we get tons of donations, but everyone showed up and shopped.” Cindy Johnson and Rosie Starks checked out some Green Bay items.
