Coloma Cycling Club rides to restored schoolhouse

The Coloma Cycling Club rode to the home of Jim and Joan Jennette to visit the old schoolhouse that they saved from destruction about five years ago, making it their new home, in Coloma. The schoolhouse was built at the turn of the century and had fallen into disrepair. It was slated for destruction, but Jim bid on it and moved it to its present location about five years ago. Restoration has been a “labor of love” for the couple. They added an addition, which now houses the kitchen and bathroom, and built their bedroom in the basement so that the living room could retain the “old schoolhouse feel.” Pictures of the presidents, painted by Jim’s daughter, adorn the walls and notes are scribbled on the slate chalkboards. The couple has had visitors who attended the school stop in with pictures and mementos. Hostess Joan Jennette, who is also a member of the club, served treats to the bicycle riders. The club rides every Saturday May through September. There are no membership dues and riders meet at the Coloma Hotel at 8:30 a.m. with their bicycle, helmet, and water bottle. Bear season yields success for Neshkoro hunter

920-566-0272

The 2013 bear season got underway in Wisconsin on Sept. 4. Neshkoro resident Todd Mascaretti was successful on the first night, taking a mature sow that tipped the scale at 300 pounds. The bear was a culmination of over 20 years of bear hunting in the Midwest and Canada. This was his seventh bear taken in as many years and is the first he has seen with a white chest patch. A white chest patch is a rare coloration found in one out of 1,000 black bears. The bear was taken with a bow and arrow on a 17-yard shot over bait near Deerbrook, with his friends Jim and Nicole Teal, at Running Wild Guide Service.

THANK YOU

We are still in a State of Shock and Disbelief that We will no longer see Howard walking with his Red Cowboy Hat - listening to his sales pitch for Fords, Yamahas, etc. and witness his Laughter and Sense of Humor. Howard touched Many lives during his 86 years - All become His Friends. He will definitely be missed by Many but especially by LaVeila, Jan, & Kerry. “Thanks” for honoring Howard with your calls, cards, flowers, food, and presence. It has given us Strength for the Tomorrows. Special “Thanks” to the Pallbearers (Chosen by Howard), Mike Leikness, & Ed with Moose Inn. Until We Meet Again LaVeila, Jan, & Kerry

THANK YOU

The family of Judy Wenzel would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who showed us love & support through visits, calls, cards, memorials & flowers during the recent illness and passing of our wonderful wife, mom, stepmom, grandmother, sister & daughter. To Mike Leikness, Sarah Schmitz & Ryan Reetz of Leikness Funeral Home - thank you for all your help, care & compassion shown to us during a very difficult time. Thank you to Pastor Kelli of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Coloma for a wonderful service honoring Judy, and to Ken Dunnett for the beautiful music and flowers for the service. To Christianos of Wautoma for the exceptional meal you prepared, and to the wonderful ladies of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church for your sweet willingness to serve it; we thank you so much. The multitude of kindnesses shown to our family will never be forgotten!

AIS Removal on two Waushara County Lakes Lake Napowan recently had a team consisting of Waushara County Land Conservation staff, Golden Sands RC&D staff and volunteers, conducting aquatic invasive species (AIS) removal. Along the shoreline there were three patches of invasive phragmites that were removed. Phragmites is a tall grass that can grow up to 12feet tall and spreads by runners under the ground. In order to control the spread and re-growth of phragmites, the plants and roots have to be dug up, or cut off at the base and treated with a herbicide. Lake Lucerne also had a patch of invasive phragmites and a small area of Eurasian water milfoil (EWM) grow-

ing near the boat landing that was removed by the team. EWM grows under the water at depths for a few inches up to 20 feet, depending on water clarity. With the aid of mask and snorkel we pulled the patches of EWM, including the roots. Hand pulling must be done with care since EWM plants can regrow from just a small fragment of the plant. It is important to identify invasive species early to develop a management plan for their control. If you suspect any invasive species in Waushara County lakes, you should call Kaycie Stushek with Golden Sands RC&D at (715) 343-6278.

Many factors increase the risk of falls for older adults, including lack of strength, use of medications, reduced vision, chronic health problems, and unsafe home conditions. Onethird of people aged 65 and older suffer from falls every year, resulting in doctor visits, hospital admissions, emergency room visits, loss of functional independence, and even death. Fall-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits for those age 65 and older result in more than $550 million in health care costs in Wisconsin annually, with more than 95 percent of the costs being paid by Medicare. Wisconsin is a national leader in fall-prevention research, and the state’s Aging and Public Health networks are leaders in providing evidencebased, fall-prevention programs

to older citizens. Communitybased programs, in combination with public health and private health care practices, reduce the likelihood of falls and support older adults in maintaining their health and staying safe in their homes and communities. A reduction in the incidents of disability and death due to falls for older adults is a priority of the State Health Plan – Healthiest Wisconsin 2020. The Governor of the State of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, proclaimed the month of September 2013, as Fall Prevention Awareness Month and further proclaims Sunday, Sept. 22 as Fall Prevention Awareness Day throughout the State of Wisconsin and commends this observance to all of Wisconsin’s citizens. Come learn how to prevent

your fall this winter by signing up for Stepping On, an evidence-based workshop with research showing a 30 percent decrease in falls. The class will start on Wednesday, Oct. 2 and will meet each Wednesday from 1:30– 3:30 p.m. at the Civic Center in Redgranite, 202 Pine River St., until Nov. 13. Although it is not required to participate, there is a small suggested donation to help cover class materials. Reserve your spot today by calling Shannon at the Aging & Disability Resource Center at 1-877-883-5378.

Hunting report Brought to you by Schmitty’s Shooting Supplies

The hot weather has slowed down hunting, but cooler weather this weekend should help things start to pick up. You should hunt doves by millet and wheat fields, and also water holes, for your best luck. Bow season opens this Saturday, Sept. 14. Great success will be found by soybean and clover fields. Acorns are starting to fall, which are good food for deer and turkey. Get your trail cameras and deer stands out there. Goose season is also going, and it will only get better as the season goes on.
