As I sit typing this intro to the 2012 Summer Wetsuit Guide, outside the sun is shining, the birds are singing and the flowers are in bloom. Yes, we’re not far off ladies and gents; summer is just around the corner! This means a number of things; 1. Soon you can pack away your long johns and other thermal under garments including vests, socks and pants – then replace them with t-shirts, shorts and flip flops 2. Surfing will no longer be a weekend or day off activity. The longer days will mean you will be able to surf long before and after work/school/college. 3. You will finally be able to revel in the moment when you stash your restrictive, hulking winter wetsuit in the garage and prepare to slip into something more comfortable! We all know that, for a surfer, this is probably the sweetest thing about the warmer climate – there’s nothing quite like the liberating feeling of being in a summer suit, when, for the previous few months you have surrounded your body with thick rubber. The following pages are devoted to slinky summer suits. These puppies are the latest offerings of the top wetsuit manufacturers operating in the market today and if, you are on the hunt for a new little number, look no further than one of these brands. When buying your new suit there are few things to bear in mind. Firstly, think about how long you plan to wear your summer suit. Obviously this is will be dictated to you by the weather but don’t forget; we live in a cold country and our warm (I use this term loosely) water season is short so think about value for money. A 2 mil suit is fine and will feel like you’re surfing naked but if you can only stick it for a couple of months, it might be worth going a step up with a 3/2 which, if it’s a quality model, will see you through to the autumn. Also, as with anything in life, spending less can be a false economy. If you’re a regular surfer it’s a good idea to think about buying a higher end suit because that way, providing you look after it (wash it out after use, store it somewhere dry) you’ll be able to wear it for the next couple of seasons. The last thing to bear in mind is kind of obvious; we humans come in different shapes and sizes, therefore, when you’re in the shop, try lots of different wetsuits on. Remember, you don’t just buy the first pair of shoes you come across and considering you will be parting with quite a lot of money, it’s the same principle here. Make sure the suit fits you perfectly – if it doesn’t, move on to another until you get it right. Eventually you will come across the perfect summer suit and I can guarantee you, it will be featured in the coming pages.
